Marathas ruled Tanjore till 1855, after which they weren't capable enough to survive the British onslaught. However, the period they ruled Tanjore, they contributed quite a lot. Rajah Serfoji, the most popular and charismatic of Maratha kings, added his own collection of books to Sarasvati Mahal library. Even today, he continues to live in the hearts of people, by way of hospitals and colleges he started during his regime. A visit to Tanjore would give you an idea what I'm talking about.
Another interesting fact is that the nobles, entertainers, singers, poets - majority of them preferred to stay back in Tanjore even after the demise of Maratha rule. As a result, you will find a small group of Marathi speaking people in Thanjavur now. Well, their customs, traditions and food habits have changed over the years, but they have managed to keep their language intact, although with a little mix of Tamil, which is unavoidable. In modern day Thanjavur, it's quite difficult figuring out these Marathi speaking individuals as most of them speak Tamil in public. They don't use their surnames anymore, however, most of them do have a 'Rao' appended to their names.
We can draw parallels between Marathi community of Tanjore with Sourastrian community in Madurai, though their migration patterns are different. Sourashtrians were uprooted from their ancestral land - Saurashtra, Gujarat due to invasions and were forced to move south. Pretty much like Tanjore Marathis, Madurai Sourashtrians speak their language in private and Tamil in public. FYI, TMS, Tamil playback singer of yesteryears, is a Sourashtrian.

Next generation of maratha ruler is raring to go. This time its rajni kant with street dwelling fans will make him the next cheap minister of tamil nadu which was long time day dream of rajni kant. He is surrounded by intelligent people like satya narayana who fought for independence, and a financial wizard and man of many faces. Not to mention millions of slum boys who have vast knowledge in politics will make Tamil nadu shine.
This is the day every one is waiting for

They came with the expansion of Maratha empire under Sivagi's descendants and captured Tanjore and stayed as an independent kingdom. They also brought a lot of service caste and soldiers with them who are the ancestors of present day Marathi Tamils of Tanjore . They have some connections with most of the Temples in Tanjore area. I still have a friend (almost 15 yrs now) who is of such ancestry. Spoke Tamil, Marathi, English, Hindi and now Kannada…. Very much intergrated with Tamil culture and Tamils of that area.
