A Tamilian is a Tamilian whatever his/her religion might be. Nevertheless, in this forum it has become common practice to suggest that non-Hindus are less Tamilian than Hindus and that Hindus are "the" only protectors of Tamil. Given this background, I am starting this thread to discuss the contributions of non-Hindus to Tamil. Please do not post in this thread unless you have something to discuss about the said subject. THE FOCUS OF THIS THREAD is CONTRIBUTION OF NON-HINDUS TO TAMIL (language) AND TAMIL LITERATURE

1. also, punctuations,full stops etc, were contributions from the christian side.
2.It was veera maa munivar (Rev. JOseph Beschii), who formulated the first tamil dictionary (chatur agaradhi), about 200 yrs prior to the one formulated by Na.Kadhirai vel pillai. but beschii's work was not widely used or acclaimed at that time.

Good to see the that Shahjahan has joined the anti-mmc brigade (should i say punnahai as the General?!:-)) ).Anyhow to help Shahjahan i am posting some details on the 'First Women Muslim writer in Tamil- Sithi Junaida Begum:
Sithi Junaida Begum:
==================================================
Sithi Junaidha Begum of Nagore was born in 1916 or 1917, as she herself put it. She was born to Sheriff Beig and Muthu Kani. She comes from a literary family of Vannakkalanjiya Pulavar. She died in March 19,1998. The sole honour of being the first Tamil Muslim woman-writer goes to her..She was inspired to write, due to her close association and intimacy with her scholarly brother Hussain Munawwar Beig., who was also a writer and popular public speaker. She could write in Tamil, Arabic and Arabu-Tamil languages very well though she had no proper schooling.
She started writing from the age of twelve. An essay and a short story were first published in 1929, in 'Darul Islam', a magazine of her day.

4. Islamum Pengalum
Her last work to be published. A collection of her published articles on various topics, published by her sister's son A.S. Mohamed Rafee, who also writes under the pen-name 'Nagore Rumi'.
During one of her conversation with Nagore Rumi, she said after the first publication, women folk flocked to see her, as though she was a raped spinster, as it was unprecedented and revolutionary for a Muslim woman to write and publishe her name! But the 'unravished bride of quitness' faced such opposition in her own way, by continuing to write for more than half century.

In fact, some of the serious poets of the current period are all Muslims. What would modern tamil poetry be without Abul Rahman, Mehta and Inqulab?

BUt one unfortunate tendency which i see among these poets and writers is that they see themselves as Arabs and write in Tamil as if a foreigner writes.....anyhow their contribution (even though limited to their religions and most of them are not secular) is commendable.

Late Dr. Gift Siromoney did quite a bit of research in his life time.
"One of the areas of Tamilology in which Prof. Siromoney has made significant contribution is Tamil musicology. If Abraham Pandither reformulated the discipline in the early 20th century and thereby initiated a virtual renascence in Tamil music and musicology, Prof.Siromoney threw new light on ancient music material ('Some New Light on Stringed Instruments of the Ancient Tamil Country'), provided fresh insights by bringing to bear modern scientific techniques upon the data of the field ('Statistical Aids in Tamil Studies', 'Style as information in Karnatic Music', 'Computer Recognition and Transliteration of Mridangam Mnemonics', 'Machine Recognition of Hand-printed Tamil Musical Notation' and so on), addressed new questions ('A Pallava Musical Instrument'), and opened new avenues for research. His academic forays into sculptures have yielded us not only a fairly good idea of ancient Tamil costumes and jewellery, but also substantial musicological data and clarified isssues in the field. For example, in the light of the sculptural depiction of cakota yaal at Darasuram temple, he proves the earlier accounts that attribute a curved stem to this instrument wrong. Though the chief target here is Vipulanandar's Yaal Nuul (1947, v-vi), there are others like the entry in Tamil Kalaikkalanjiyam (by Vellaivaranar, 1961, viii.582)."
