Is the Jaffana Library open? I am an American and will be interning for the CSIS in Sri Lanka this summer. Any information would be of great help. Thank you in advance.

DALLAS,
We know Canadian Government cut down funding for many programmes to eliminate deficit. I don't think CSIS is one of them. Now we have over 8 bilion dollar surplus. I doubt the CSIS is relying on forum hub to get reliable information like this one.Why don't you calL Srilankan Embassy directly.Srilanka is still a civilzed place.
Good luck

AJ, Dallas:
I think AJ is thinking of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) in Ottawa while Dallas is thinking of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC. Am I right?
In February this year, there were plans for reopening the Jaffna library, but it was postponed as there were complaints that the rebuilding was not complete...As the burning of this library in 1981 remains an indelible mark of the racist violence against the Tamil people in Sri Lanka, some people also wanted a more fitting reopening at a later time when there is complete normality in Jaffna.
Since then, I haven't heard anything about the reopening and I believe it is not open yet. But I have not been following the news lately, and others may give you more info on this.

Sorry, You are right. I thought it was a joke, how could someone from CSIS announce his job in a public forum. I was wondering Why do they have to hire an American to work for CSIS.
Thank you

I hope you are familier with the travel warning to Northern SL. LTTE is not happy with Americans since US consider LTTE as a Terrorist organization and banned its operations.
"TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS:
American citizens are advised not to travel north of a line drawn from Puttalam on the west coast through Anuradhapura in the central north and Nivaveli (just north of Trincomalee) in the east. Areas north of this line contain many land mines, making travel off paved roads very dangerous. In addition, the LTTE rather than the Government of Sri Lanka is effectively the civil administration in many sections of the north. Official travel by U.S. Government personnel to this area is restricted, and their unofficial travel is prohibited. Travel in the east in the area south of the Anuradhapura-Nivaveli line (including Trincomalee, Batticaloa and points south) poses significant safety risks. Roads are often substandard, and police, medical and other emergency help is severely limited or not available. Communications within the eastern areas are also limited, with no cell phone accessibility and very limited landline telephone access. Because of these considerations, the U.S. Embassy may not be able to provide consular services in a timely manner to American citizens who travel to the north and east. You can see a map of the areas affected by the travel restrictions.

Great. I heard the LTTE controls only 70% of Tamil Eelam but according to the American travel warning, they have more than 90% of Tamil Eelam under their control. Puttalam to Nilaveli, Trincomalee(Thirukonamali) and batticaloa (mattakalappu), it seems like the whole North and Eastern coast is under their control. Thanks Lankapiece for this info.
These "little boys" over ran the American trained Sinhala generals and still they are holding the whole track of land. Don’t you think these "little boys" are great Lankapiece?

AJ,
>> Puttalam to Nilaveli>>
As long as I know LTTE has nothing to do in Puttalam. Puttalam district has five electrates...Chilaw, Vennappuwa, Naaththaandi, Aanamaduwa and Puttalam (district name given to one electrate). Except Puttalam all the other 4 electrates have more than 80% of Sinhalese. Puttalam electrate has more than 80% of Tamil Muslims. Almost all displaced Muslims from North have been given refuge in Puttalam. To my knowledge LTTE has no control what so ever within Puttalam District. Puttalam is one of the peaceful areas in Sri Lanka.

Democracy rules the South and Terrorists with guns control the North with fear.
They say that your God Prabhakaran will get killed by a Tamil first when he come out of his cave, before a Sinhalese does.
