The Name Karikal came from the root 'kari'+'kAl', kari mean black or stoot and kAl mean leg in Thamizh. According to what I know there were three Kings in the past with the name KariKalan and the early Karikalan must have been one of the Kings from Thamizh Sangam. The Late ones may have been named after him like Aathiththa Karikalan from Chozha Empire Time, he was an elder brother of Arunmozhiththevan (AruNnmozhiththevan; aka RasaRasaChozhan) and he was murdered by his Uncle (who was eager for the power; or by the brahmins who was loyal to Pandiyan King and revenged the Pandiyan King murder). He died before getting the Chozha Crown. Perhaps he would have been a Great Emperor too, he was a very good Soldier before he was assasinated or murdered.

Continued...
//he was a very good Soldier// He was an excellent Warrior and a popular Chozha Prince.
Karikalan; The name came because the King was a Child and he stayed at his Uncle's house with his mother after his Father was killed by the Chera King and Pandiyan King. Then the Cherars and Pandiyars found out his hiding and tried to burn the Child. However his Uncle rescued him but left a burnt on his leg. Hence the name Karikalan became common name for him. He later on defeated Cherars and Pandiyars during his regime. It said he actually defeated the 'Neduncheralathan,' who was the father of 'Cheranchenkuttuvan,' who was the brother of the Thamizh Poet Illango!

Thiru A P MASILMANI have explained the roots of the words Chera, Chozha and Panidya.
Cherar (T): Chaaral > Cheral (from 'malaichchaaral)
Chozhar (T): Chozhai like 'Cholai' meaning 'vaLam' (rich, richness)
Pandiyar (T): Pandy meaning Ancient..Pandiyan Kingdom is believed to be the Oldest of all three Kingdoms.
