History of Tamil New Year

Tamils throughout the world celebrate Ponggal in mid-January, which is observed as Thamizhar Thirunaal and hence Tamil new Year as some.
But mid-April is known as Thamizh Puthaandu.
Could some people shed light on how these came about and how are they different.
I hope this remains a thread on history and does not digress to the usual fights. Bore adichu pochu.

However hard you guys try to bury my post in nonsense, I will not go away. Here is my post again so people can read it:
Santa,
Well I am posting only against RSS thugs like Karunaiyan and his insane abuses against christianity and Jesus.
NaiVaal Aruvaal and MaMadayan Cholan came to karunaiyan's defense and attacked me with abusive language and I am striking back.
If you would rather have KaruNaiyan post his anti-jesus tirades while being actively or furtively supported by low-life vermin like Aruvaal and MMC karthikdevan, then OK. I will go away.
We are being constantly advised by the people in this forum to take abuses from mmc/aruvaal/karunaiyan "sportively". If anyone responds with a counter attack it is a crime?
For example, in another thread where Karunaiyan said that he will be happy when "all christians have been burnt down", Kumar sportively joked "It is really hot here in australia. Could you please freeze me to death instead?" These kind of "sportive" replies are encouraged. No offense to Mr. Kumar as I have the highest regard for him. When someone pushes us to the floor and grinds his heels on our faces, we should take it sportively. Good philosophy indeed.
The hindutvaadis here can do anything they want. They can abuse Jesus as much as they want. But if we counter-attack it is a major problem here.
Awaiting Mr. Santa's answer.

It is wonderful to see them praising themselves.
Atleast they agree what they are and their nature.
