Sri Lanka is a country of origin and destination for trafficked persons. Internal trafficking of persons for purposes of sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, and child soldiers also takes place in Sri Lanka. In many cases, Sri Lankan women go to the Middle East in search of work, only to be put into situations of coerced labor, slave-like conditions, or sexual exploitation. A small number of Thai, Russian, and Chinese women have been trafficked to Sri Lanka for purposes of sexual exploitation. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) abduct and hold children against their will for purposes of forced labor, military conscription, and in some cases, sexual exploitation. A ceasefire with the LTTE has been in place since December 2001.

UTHR's Report Confirmed this.

Miss. Nanthini Thangarasa (15 or 16) of Ward 9, Kokkadiccholai, was a young girl in an LTTE establishment in Interior Batticaloa. She had committed suicide on 24th April 2002 and her body was sent home for burial. According to informants close to the family, Nanthini had been a few months pregnant through an affair with a Ravi of the LTTE's Communications Unit. The suicide according to these sources resulted from Ravi denying paternity of the child and refusing to marry her.
Another version of presumably the same incident from casual village talk illustrates how difficult it has become in that atmosphere to disentangle truth from half-truth. In this second version, the girl is said to have been 18 and had left the LTTE. She is said to have become pregnant by an affair with a married man, a civilian, in the Unnichchai area. Following the girl's suicide the LTTE is said to have detained the man and later released him. The interlocutor was not aware of the girl's name.
On applying for further clarification, we learnt that Nandini had been conscripted by the LTTE during 2001. She had been assigned to work in the Communications Unit at Kevarmalai, near Unnichchai, that was headed by Ravi. When she became pregnant, some unsuccessful attempts were made at abortion. It was then that she had confided in a few friends. Following her suicide, the LTTE decided to send her body home rather than place her among the martyrs' graves. Ravi , we learn, was subsequently questioned, and the matter was hushed up.

Having gone through several aspects of child conscription and its effects on society, the question naturally arises whether the LTTE does respond to international concern, and of what value are assurances from the highest LTTE officials?

last samurai,
i appreciate your way of expressing / getting things across. mayb i hv bn the one seeing the truth from only one side. i need to read up on this.....
mayb u like nedunchezhiyan, i don't. u know how it is whn someone is disgusted with a person who calls names, uses hate language...ppl may not even want to hear what the other person is saying - they may just want 2 retaliate and show that person his place and bring him down from his egoistical stand (we live in an equal world afterall) such ppl only spoil things.
as far as ltte is concerned, i shall c u on this thread 2 months later :-) (whn hv learnt better shall discuss better.)[fyi, perhaps coz hv never mentioned b4 - i like sl food, esp hot srilankan crabs and srilankan slang of tamil, which i am learning]- so am not really anti-sl or something like that if hv come across that way to u. [sigh! shrug]. well, anyways, c u later.......

Happy indian,
if you are learning sL-Tamil then go for Jaffna Tamil. The sweetest Tamil I've ever heard so far.

dear happyindian,
"Can you please explain to me why did the first Sinhalese attack Tamils in SL? Did this begin first as ethnic clashes?"
The Sinhalese began violence against the Tamils in the 20th century starting in 1956. This occurred after the Tamils protested against new laws which made Sinhala the only official language. Before this, English was the only official language. The Sinhalese were bitter because the Tamils had advantages in education and employment during the colonial era, and thus they wanted to make Sinhala the official language. When the Tamils protested against this, the Sinhalese perceived the Tamils as being anti-Sinhalese and violence started.

"Whatevr origin Sinhalas may have, why are they not considered Dravidian?"
Sinhala language is closer to north Indian than S. Indian, although it has a number of Tamil words. It evolved from a prakrit over the last 2500 years.
How are you learning Jaffna dialect? I have written a conversion from written to Madurai colloquial to Jaffna colloquial Tamil. Some of the Jaffna grammar is very different from anything found in India.

Sri lankan,
Can u please send me a copy of that conversion to happyindian123@indiatimes.com ? Thanks in advance.
Yes srilankan tamil is a sweet language; more so the jaffna dialect. Some egoistical ppl like nedun create dislike than generate interest in anything ceylonese. I just can't stand his unwarranted unnecessary ego. But must also admit I am far moved from violence, anger and hatered in my personal life and find it tuf to find reason / logic to justify it. Its not like I hv not seen communal violence. So I know what I am saying. No one is happy at the end of it. Thankfully most ceylonese-origin ppl i know in my life are too disconnected from ego-based / anger stuff. I suppose good family culture and education makes the whole difference. But yeah no one knows I go as happyindian / WhoElse on FH - except my family and 3 pals- its my "other side" :) And its fun learning.

happyindian,
I am not yet finished with the conversion, but I am 95% finished. It is currently in roman alphabet, because I am looking for a good Tamil font. Too many of these stupid fonts put a space after a letter with the puLLi. I found one font which doesn't put that space, but it is kind of thick.
No need to find reason/logic to justify hatred. It is an evil in itself which ultimately destroys the one having it. Family, culture and education are important but it is ultimately the decisions the individual makes whether to have hate.

In Sri Lanka, I would personally say that jaffna tamil is very important to know, but also indian dialect is important. In Colombo there are many different kinds of Tamils, not all understand Jaffna dialect. Some Malayatthamizharkal (from up-country) understand Jaffna dialect but do not like it, because they have had bad experiences because their dialect is looked down upon. However, Madurai dialect is considered very respectable and that is why I think next to Jaffna dialect it is most important. Combining these with knowledge of sinhalese, the entire country is available without barriers!
