A person who otherwise would have jumped with joy over this idea gets a reminder in vvv to respond. I am tied with lot, a lot of work. And for the week beginning aug.15 I have a tough schedule with my vacuum systems, which unfortunately does not appreciate ....

Having exaggerated the ghost that haunts me; let me come to my usual self. I am all for it and is longing to have a go at it. Let us discuss some technicalities,

0. Let us keep all discussions about the technicalities/subject right here to get as much feedback as possible, as this is a first attempt.

1. rr is there to help (otherwise we will make him help). I have never ventured into any realtime chat/voice over IP/... stuff in the past. I guess the netfriends framework (in both senses) is just suitable.

2. Let us conduct a couple of minkaviyarankam with our hub friends and be sure about how does it work before attempting to get "cover poets".

3. We shall keep the grammer open, left to the poets choose if he wants to write a kalippa or a vadivili

more on hearing other's ideas. Please write something more than 'I am glad to hear this proposal' - even if you do not have 'poetic inclinations', please help us with your suggestions on what would you like to hear on that and how can that be done.

I was hesitating to write this in light of the many enthusiastic letters I see here. My only exposure to Kaviyarangkam are the ones I have sometimes heard on AIR in my young days..many years ago and a few Kamban kaviyarangkams I have attended.
1. I am a great believer in the written form of literature and prefer it to its audio substituton.
I do not see adequate benefits for the efforts everyone needs to put in. What do we get ? Can't an equivalent benefit (and more) come just by the written form...? Is this the need for this time? My answer is : No.
2. I could never get much after hearing a poet speak for 3 -minutes or so. I find that I have to read again and again any poem before I can appreciate the subtleties ( or lack of !). I do not know if the "audio" mode adds that much more, except for the possibility that it can be done.
I personally do not see any added value in this. I guess there is some thrill for the participants that their voice can be heard over the world...and sometimes the reading of already well-known poems (like Bharathi's) has had great appeal for me. My curiosity in hearing the voices of some poets has been satisfied. ( I think that the time is here when we can add audio clips of each poem along with the written form which can be heard by anyone thru Internet in an archival manner..perhaps much more economically)
2. On the other hand, giving a theme or a title, asking everyone to contribute by a particular date; having a Board of Poets choose the best and input it in the Internet on one day would be enjoyed by all..for ever. It would be ideal if poets in India who do not have Internet access can send the poems to some volunteers in India who can send the TSCII files to Poets' Board ; then the best of the World can be presented on Internet. This would be an economical way of doing something of permanent value: bringing the world of poetry together. This can be done every month or two months.This will pave the way for a new e-zine "kaviyarangkam" a monthly or bi-monthly offering on different themes which can unite the best of the world. The Editorial Board consisting of well-known marabu and puthukkavi poets can assure that the quality is maintained. The participants also get the satisfaction that their poems were read by a respected team and will get the necessary feedback for improvement. I believe efforts along these directions to be more useful and needed for this time than the direction suggested here. And of permanent value.And fulfill a much needed vacuum. Many poems are written here ; but we really do not know if they will stand the test of a balanced Board of Poets. Won't such efforts be more useful in fostering better poetry quality than the intended effort? The audio-mode may be an extra bonus for the well-known poets in reaching a wider audience in a colourful way; but that is about it. How does it help budding poets? Hearing other great poets read aloud their poems..will that inspire better poetry? Perhaps...not for me, alas: reading their poetry month after month , perhaps will help me, I think.
3. I have bemoaned the fact that we are unable to hear the results of Kaviyarangkam-s held in India. ( Thanks to Vanchi and you, I could read some; would I have derived the same pleasure if I had only listened to you and others read them for a few minutes...I doubt it. After reading your mail let me make another suggestion to you, Hari and other well-wishers.
1. The most practical first step (before conference etc.) is the streaming of 'Kaviyarangkams" which are held in Channai and nearby places regularly. ( This was my original suggestion; and I would like to harp on it once more!)
2. At present there are many music sites which do this.e.g. www.kutchery.com I read about these young volunteers ( most if not all of them at Chennai) who get together and with the help of some sponsors broadcast a concert every month or so. Each song is indivudally presented. Except during heavy traffic time, I have listened to many of these songs without difficulty. All you need is Real or Window media players and the result is easy, automatic listening pleasure.
3. I think the time has come when Kaviyarangkams and other Lectures can/should be done this way. Kaviyarangkams naturally separate into many poems. Easily 15-20 such readings (along with the Chair's intro etc) can be presented over the Internet in the same format... streaming. There will be no permanent archives; every month or so, another Kaviyarangkam will take its place.
4. At present I think that such efforts are much more practical than conferencing over Internet. And , in my opinion, more useful .Also very easy, since there are many manRams and kazakam-s which do meet regularly. ( Hari himself is part of one; I don't know how many viewers (not poets) attend such functions; I bet that there will be more such listeners if done the way I suggest. Vanchi, who attended the last one and complained that he missed some of Hari's readings need not miss these anymore; he will have a month to listen to it!)
5. Ultimately I would like most of the manRams in Tamilnadu to get together and sponsor one such web-site . (perhaps, with the financial support of a great patron like PoLLachi Mahalingam !) Then the Kaviyarangkam will switch from one manRam to another every week or so. What is needed is just an audio tape of the proceedings and equipment for streaming. I'm sure if proper persons (e.g. those who run kutchery site) in Chennai are contacted this will become a reality. ( the written poems can be archived if permitted by the poets)
6. If there are financial constraints which make this difficult to achieve in the forumhub setting, I volunteer to share the cost.The main need is someone(s) at Chennai who have the equipment and are willing to do it. I am sure Hari can easily get the permission of poets and an audio tape every month or so.
7. I think it is high time 'iyal', the eldest followed the lead of the younger 'isai' in this effort.
8. My recommerndation is a prgmatic one, based on what I think is the needed first step before other more desirable media events can take place . If those Kavi-Conferences can't be done easily, is it not better to achieve atleast "broadcast" first...? Is this a less "flashy" course of action and hence, less appealing than a big Internet conference-call? Perhaps; but I contend that the value ( minus the participation of some Internet players ) is still very considerable , And more importantly there are examples in the music field which assure that I am not dreaming. I believe this is the need right now and can be done with the available technology NOW.

As you say, broadcasting Chennai / anyother kaviyarangam may not be a difficult task.
But that does not fulfil the main idea of bringing together world-wide tamil poets into a single 'arangu'. So, as 'vassan' has suggested, if there is an easy way for voice conference, why not try it? (I am yet to visit vassan's suggested site. But I am writing this as a quick response to your posting.)
To be honest, I tend to connect your original posting with this one, and it gives some kind of a discouraging feeling. Forgive my 'kuRukku buththi'.

I think the difficulty is basically due to the fact that one has to login first with their Yahoo Group's User ID and Password to enter into any of the mail groups coming under Yahoo.
