Yeithoa Ninaivugal - Memories of Another Day
Topic started by NOV (@ 202.184.134.10) on Fri Aug 28 23:02:05 EDT 1998.
This thread is a spin-off from Udhaya's thread to create an index of yearned-for songs.
I have a collection of cassettes running into hundreds, and there must be many of you out there who also have good collections. As new songs are produced, we tend to listen less to the older songs that used to fascinate us at one time. While this thread aims to re-create that feelings of yonder years, in the process we may even help one another to exchange/record some of our favourites.
In summary, if Udhaya's thread is to list the songs that you yearn for, this one is to list the songs that you already have, memories of which will surely bring back the smile to your face. :-))

I've had this idea to one day, list down all my cassette collection and store it permanently. DF member's passion on Eera Vizhi Kaaviyangal, made me dig into my store and rekindle those memories. Most of my collection are songs dating from the late 70s to the late 80s - period when I was financially independent. Then, I got married....... :-))))
Let me begin with a superb album bearing the combo Aalulkkoru Aasai and Machchanai Paartheengalaa.
Aalukoru Aasai
The movie stars Muthuraman and Jaychitra and was released in the late 70s. Music is by Ilayaraja.
1. Manjal araikkumpoathu padi eiri paaththa machchaan is by Vani Jeyram and is an excellent folk number.
2. Kanakku parththu kaathal vanthathu is a lyrical experience by TMS.
3. Idhaya Mazhaiyil adds to the number.
Machchaanai Paatheengalaa
This one stars Sivakumar and Srideivi. The MD is not credited, but the music is very IR-ish.
1. Maampoovey, siru mainavey is a duet that MUST be in your collection. KJJ and SJ sing this beautiful song.
2. Maaman Muniyaandi aaththaa is a sexy folk song and is easily one of the every best of SJ. Her humming send shivers down my spine. A definite goodie.
The other songs are TMS' Desingu Rajan, Ada koorukkeitta pasangalaa & Engamma Maharasi
Eera Vizhi Kaaviyangal
This album has been greatly discussed in the Creativity of Ilayaraja thread. It stars Pratap, with music of IR. Unforunately my cassette is very "scratchy".
1. Kaathal panpaadu by KJ Jesudass
2. En gaanam by Ilayaraja & Jency
3. Kanavil mithakkum by KJ Jesudass
4. Pazhaya soagangal by Ilayaraaja
5. Thendralida thoadanangal by Ilaayraaja

NOV (@ 202.*) on: Mon Sep 7 05:15:37 EDT 1998
How many of you remember
Archanai Pookal
This was art-movie director, Balu Mahendra's creation.
I believe the stars were Archana and Banuchander.
The first song is an enchanting duet
Kaaveriyey kaaveriyey, while
Naduchaamam poayachu had lots of fans those days. S. Janaki did her wonders again in
Vazhimeil vizhiyaai.
Aavarang kaattukul Thevaramaa is the last song in this album.
-
NOV (@ 202.*) on: Mon Sep 7 05:23:36 EDT 1998
I faield to mention Archanai Pookal is by IR> The album comes with another combo in
Ethanai Koanam Ethanai Paarvai
Rajaraman told me that the movie was not released.
This movie starred Suresh & Vadivukarasi (that's the cover!) and with great music by IR.
My all-time favourite song is from this movie
Alai paayuthei Kanna by KJJ and SJ. Eppadi vendumaanaalum pugazhalaam!
Enna vithiyaasam is the standard kindal song.
Vithaitha vithai is a marvelous pathos number.
The album also contains several Raagas, including Paahimaam
-
GV (@ d22-*) on: Mon Sep 7 10:59:53 EDT 1998
NOV:
"Alai Paayuthei Kannaa.." (Ilaiyaraja/KJY-SJ) is one of my all-time favourites too. My only complaint is that the song is too short.

NOV:
How can you???? Maampoovae is by KJ & PS (not SJ). Most of the movies you mentioned were released when I was in school and I was not financially independent then. So the only source was Radio (Vividh Bharathi , Radio Ceylon etc).
I remember vividly that Vividh Bharathi used to bore one to death with 'Engamma Maharasi' song (with all that loud thaarai, thappatai sounds).
-
Udhaya (@ 205.*) on: Thu Sep 10 20:14:07 EDT 1998
I long for those obscure gems I used to hear on Radio Ceylon whenever I visited Madhurai. The following songs I would never have heard were it not for Radio Ceylon:
-Thangathaeroadum Azhaginilae Indha Raajaathi Koluvirundhaal (SPB,PS from Ragupathy Raghavan Rajaram)
-Vaadai Vaattudhu Oru Poarvai Kaetkudhu (IR from Sakkalaththi)
-Mazhai Tharumoa En Maegam (SPB from Manidharil Iththanai Nirangalaa)
-Theertha Karaiyinilae Shenbagap Pushpangalae (KJY? from Thaippongal)
-Naalu Pakkam Vaedarundu (SPB, PS from Annan Oru Kovil)
Hmmm adhellam oru kaalam!
-
C.Pirabu (@ 173-*) on: Fri Sep 11 02:48:14 EDT 1998
"Malai chaaralil ilam poonguyil.
Athan Maarbunil oruaan kuyil."
- Oru Kudumbathin kathai.
Ennoda favorite paatu.
-
NOV (@ 202.*) on: Fri Sep 11 04:34:49 EDT 1998
GV - There are two versions of Alai paayuthey Kanna. The short version was in Alaigal Oivathillei.
Ravy - I'm sorry. A thousand apologies. Ennai manniththuvidungal. :-)))
PS is excellent in that song, isn't she?
Udhaya - Our tastes seem to run parallel. (I hope I'm not insulting you!) Except for the alst one, the rest are very good.
Pirabu - There must be hundreds more!
-
NOV (@ 202.*) on: Fri Sep 11 05:01:29 EDT 1998
The next album remembered is my favouritest favourite. :-))
Aananda Raagam
I remember the movie starring Sivakumar in a fishing village setting. The musical score of Ilayaraaja was at one of his best.
Meigam karukkuthu mazha vara paakkuthu is superbly introduced by Gangai Amaran and taken to great heights by KJ Jesudass and S. Janaki.
Oru raagam paadaloadu by KJJ and SJ again is one of the sweetest sentimental songs of that period. A must in any TFM collection.
Kanavugaley kanavugaley is a stirring soulful number by KJJ.
Kadaloaram, kadaloaram befits the story of thsi movie, but a little to fast for me.

I have a few songs that I used to hum when I was a school kid. These songs belong to the mid 70's and were hits for a short span of time just before/after IR burst into TFM. I'm not going to elaborate much on these, but just enough to make one nostalgic.
1. Neram, pournami neram - SPB, VJ - Meenava Nanban - Nice, hummable tune by MSV
2. Thangaththil niram eduththu - KJY,VJ - Meenava NaNban - Another nice song
3. sugam aayiram, en ninaivilae - VJ - MayangugiraL Oru mAdhu - MD- Vijaya Baskar (This is one of VJ's best, the tune is still fresh in my memory)
4. kaNNanin sannidhiyil - two versions, one is a KJY solo and the other is PS & Jayachandran. Both were popular. (Oru kodiyil iru malargaL).
More later

NOV (@ 202.*) on: Wed Sep 16 05:20:13 EDT 1998
Thanks Ramamurthy & Ravy for your valuable inputs.
I have two very popular movies for review today, both with music my Isaignani.
Kaatriniley Varum geetham
I can't recall anything about the actors in this movie. The songs, on the other hand, really caused a stir then.
Kandein engum poomagal, naatiyam, kaanbathellam athisayam, aanantham, kaatriniley varum geetham.
by S. Janaki is truly haunting. I didn't see the movie, but I can very well imagine the scene. S. Janaki is fantastic in this song and sounds even better in the slower version of this song. Enchanting and vintage stuff.
Oru vaanavil poaley, en vaazhviley vanthaai
by Jayachandran and S. Janaki is another great number and a charming sentimental.
Un vaarththaiyaal ennai vendraai....
Hmmmm.
Siththira sevvaanam sirikka kandein, thaiyara thaiyaa, en kannaana Kannamma, en ponnaanna Ponnamma
The thaiyara thaiya by Jayachandran is too good to be true! I remember the excellent reviews this song received back then.
Mullum Malarum
This movie was Mahendran's effort and brought together Rajani Kanth and Shoba as Mullum Malarum - brother & sister.
Senthaalam poovil vanthaadum thendral, en meethu moathuthamma
Lyrics by Kannadasan and vocal by Jesudass carried this song to super heights.
Azhagu miguntha raajakumaari megamaaga poagiraal What a killer combination!
Niththam niththam nellu choaru, nei manakkum kaththirukka. Neththu vachchaa meen kolambu enna izhukkuthaiyya
Who would believe it that this song was sung by Vaani Jeyraam. Only IR would have thought of it! :-))
Adi penney, ponnunjal aaduthu ilamai and
Raaman aandaalum Raavanan aandalum enakkoru kavalai illei are the other two songs in this movie.
There's one more movie in this cassette, Ival Oru Seethai in which
Pallava naattu raajakumaarikku paruvam pathinettu by SPBala is worth mentioning.
-
Ravy (@ eagl*) on: Wed Sep 16 12:14:27 EDT 1998
NOV: I fell in love with KVK songs the first time I heard them. I remember the reviews for this movie that it started with a lot of promise but that was it. The leading pair was Muthuraman and Kavitha & directed by SP Muthuraman.
Also the slower version of KandEn engum is sung by VJ. This was the first song IR used super-imposing technique . Other such songs are En KaNmaNi from Chittukuruvi and KaNmaNiyae from 6ril irundhu 60 varai.
Another movie songs that I would love to have in my collection is Chittukkurvi. Recently I added a couple of them thanks to Nitin Sreedevan.
1. En KaNmani
2. Ponnula ponnula paNNina mookuththi
3. Ada da da mamaRakiLiyae
4. Unnai nambi nettiyilae

Thanks Ravy for reminding me of Chittu Kuruvi. I must search for the cassette. Such wonderful songs. Although I will receive a lot of flak for this, let me say it: I think Chittu Kuruvi is a better album than Annakili. :-))
Trsut Ramki to come up with the amendments! Thanks Ramki. You again rekindled my memories on a couple of songs, such as Alai meedhu thadumaarudhe siru odam, Nee varuvai ene naan irundhen, Selvamae ore mugam parkkiren & Engengu nee sendra podhum, great songs that have been forgotten.
Gatsby - Oru line-a padikumbothu engeyo poita maathiri irukuthu.

I love Metti songs too.

Guys, I searchd my store for something for this thread and guess what turned up? A great collection and one of my fondest and choicest album from the early 80s.
If you don't have any of these songs, I implore you to beg, borrow or steal. It is definitely worth it.
The songs are not demarcated properly and I am not sure which one belongs to which movie. So, I will lump them together as well. :-))
Kashmir Kaathali I don't know who is the MD.
Gramathu Athiyaayam This one is by IR
Agal Vilakku This is also by IR.
Poopoandra penngaley, pollaachi kangaley
is by KJ Jesudass. This is the weakest song in this collection, but no mean one either. A sort of penn-keili song.
Sangeethamey en deiveethamey
by KJ Jesudass and P Suseela. Both their voices are a perfect match.
Yeithoa ninaivugal, kanavugal, manathiley, kaaveri neeraagavey, kaatroadu kaatraagavey
the namesake of this thread is by KJ Jesudass and SP Sailaja. Words alone cannot describe the beauty and sheer romance of this song.
Puthu sugam, arimugam
by S. Janaki is a soulful number, surely sending the listener to emotional depths.
Azhagiya sennira vaanam, athiley, un mugam kandein
SP Bala & S. Janaki. Oh God! Why do we need any more songs? :-))
Vaadaatha Rosaappoo, naan ingu paarthein
by SP Bala is a sad song along the lines of Uchi vaguntheduththu. Kaathaadi poalaachu pennodu siru nenju ..... ammaadi oorellaam poali veisham....
Poovey, ithu poojai kaalamei
I can't decipher the singer. It can be either Sujatha or Swarnalatha. Not Jency. Maybe Ramki can help.
Ootha kaaththu veesayile, kuyilu koovayile, konjidum aasaiyile, kuruvinga peisaile
by Jayachandran and S. Janaki proves IR's mastery over village songs.
Maalai neira kaatrey
by S. Janaki is a heart wrenching number.
Aaththu meittule oru paattu keikkuthu
Not one but two graamiya songs, each one distinct, by Jayachandran & S. Janaki. Can anyone fault me for calling this the choicest album?
Elloarum porandhoam onnaaga valarnthoam
by Malaysia Vasu is a cheery song, after a jail release!
Nee kannil vaazhum mannan thaaney
I round up this album with this escatic number which, no one who has listened to before, can claim not to be bewitched. :-))))
Ippadi innisai mazhaiyil ungalai ninaiya vaiththathil enakku romba magizhchi. I hope you had a good time reading, as I did, listening. :-)))))

Ramki and Udhaya: I think I can bolster Udhaya's claim that SP Muthuraman is the director of Kaatrinile varum geedham.
Proof: I was listening to S.Ve.Shekar's "Kaadhula Poo" drama cassette. In one situation Lord Yama is finding a replacement for Shekhar who has been wrongly brought to Naragam. Then Yama says that "Isnt it true that there are 7 looalikes for every body in the human world and didnt somebody make a film about it" for which Chithraguptan answers "Ammaam Prabhu, SP Muthuraman eduthadhu "Kaatrinile Varum Geedham" ". I'avent seen the movie but Iam an ardent fan of S.Ve.Shekhar's dramas and know most of his drama dialogues by heart. So I think Udhaya is right if not then S.Ve.Shekar is.

NOV: I agree with your rating of Chittukuruvi Vs AnnakkiLi. Talking about Giramaththu Adhiyayam reminds of Director Rudraiya's first movie, (GA was his 2nd one)AVAL APPADITHTHAN. I haven't seen the movie but songs (3 of them) are great.
1. UravugaL thodarkadhai - KJY. Excellent piano throughout the song.
2. Panneer pushpangalae - Kamal. Kannadasan's (I suppose) lyrics are out of the world. (panjali vazhndha paridhaba vazhvai paaratta yarumillai...)
3. Vazhkkai odam sella - SJ. Again excellent lyrics such as
Oorengum medai, RajakkaL vesham, uNmayil rajakkaL illai - ulagaththil peNmai uyarvagavillai, udhavadha puzhpangaL peNgaL..
I don't have these songs in my collection but they are etched in my memory.

BTW, yesterday I watched an old Sivaji movie directed by SPM with music by IR, Vetrikku Oruvan. Both the movie and the music suck. :-((
So much for this combo. Needless to say, the only male singer was TMS!

How do you come up with this amazing list?
I think Uththaman song is Padagu, padagu not pazhagu....
pErum pugazhum has another good song - Avalae en kadhali - SPB & VJ(?).
Here is some more memorable songs from various movies.
1. Paalibeshegam seyyavo, unakku thEnabishegam seyyavo - Muththana Muththallavo - SPB & VJ(?) - MSV *ing Jai Ganesh & Sujatha
2. Enna thavam seidhEn unnai maNam koLLa - TMS, PS Movie ??
3.AvaL oru pachchai kuzhandhai paadum paravai paruvam 16 - Nee oru magarani - SPB & PS - MD Sankar Ganesh
4. Mohana punnagai oorvalamae - Uravu Solla oruvan - KJY - MD VijayaBaskar - *ing Muthuraman, SUjatha - A tearjerker but received good reviews. (this is a good varNanai song - nadaiyinil annal kandEn, idiyinil minnal kandEn, thzhuvadha angam thottu uravada vaa ..)
NOV: All songs of Panner PuzhpangaL are good except Vengaya Sambarum ...
How about Pagalili Ore iravu? I haven't seen this movie but there was no leading magazine in TN that didn't carry Sridevi's falls scene still !!
1. ILamai yenum poongatru - SPB - This one needs no intro. The intro. music just lulls you into another world (heaven?)
2. Kalaiyo illai silayo - JC
3. Ponnaram poovaram - SPB. A good, decent song and the zest in SPB's voice is worth mentioning
4. Tham tha theem - SJ and Chorus
A digressive note:
Vikatan film reviews used to carry marks for individual categories besides overall mark. The highest mark for a movie so far is 62.5 for 16 vayadhinilae - kamal got 90 for his performance.
unforunately I don't remeber how much IR got for this movie.
