There was real spirituality in the films of the 1960s and early 70s unlike those of the 80s, which made use of amateur technology and turned out to be unwittingly funny, if not disgraceful.
Let us discuss the historic devotional films of the 1960s.

Let us discuss the historic devotional films of the 1960s.
When you speak of devotional films and the 1960s, the first name that comes to mind is Sivaji Ganesan.
If Lord Siva were to appear on earth, he would find competition in Sivaji!
Thiruvilaiyadal - as Lord Siva
Karnan
Saraswathy Sabatham - as Naradhar and poet
Thirmaal Perumai - as Azhvaars
Thiruvarutselvar
Kandhan Karunai
Raja Raja Cholan
The next list will be Devar Films
Thunaivan
Thiruvarul
Deivam
Velum Mayilum Thunai
There were others, and some of the 1950s too, which are worth considering...
Thirumalai Deivam
Aadhi Parasakthi
Dasavatharam
Baktha Prahlada
Maya Bazaar
Lava Kusa
Sampoorna Ramayanam
Agathiyar
Here is the full film of Baktha Prahlada on youtube

2 classics by AP Nagarajan tops the chart
1. Thiruvilayadal
2. Saraswathi sabatham
of course lot of films followed it like thiruvarutchelvar, thirumal perumai etc ..
the professionalism, the small small nuances and minute things they took care of be it photography, the way sets were done all mind blowing
watch saraswathi sabatham here

watch thiruvilayadal here

of course Lava kusa was another milestone movie
For non-spiritual types like me (who likes spirits), I think good performance and very strong script are the draws. I can't watch any of these without NT. NT is essential ingredient. Saraswathy Sabatham for me is a must revisit every few months. Then, of course, Thiruvilayadal.
to add
thiruvarutselvar,kandan karunai and adhiparasakthi.
