Kamesh,
Any information from Sony on the audio sales figure of NEPV as of now ?
"...People are dumbstruck with the audio launch of 'NEP' which is purely an Ilayaraja's composition. The audio launch was telecasted in Jaya TV which received a huge response from the audience. The entire evening celebration was dedicated to Ilayaraja's music...Gautham Menon has tweeted stating that he is very happy with the prodigious welcome for the audio launch and trailer. And he also thanked Ilayaraja sir for such a spectacular work..."

"...The latest in tinsel town is that a film production company has acquired the distribution rights of Neethaane En Pon Vasantham starring Jiiva and Samantha in Coimbatore for a whopping price.
Gautham Menon has expressed happiness over the deal, say reports.
Trade analysts believe that the turning point was the grand audio launch of the film, which featured the maestro Ilaiyaraaja himself. The songs have been declared a hit."

FYI: Best seller for SONY was Varanam Ayiram - 1,00,000 AUDIO CDs. Next is Vinnaithandi varuvaya at 45,000
Please note the above audio sales includes pre launch and post movie launch audio sales figures

Kamesh, What are the Sony guys doing about the orchestra and recording studio credits missing on the album sleeve?
SVN - i emailed Sony Music south thus:
"I have a very polite but strong request: Photon Kathas having spent money hiring Hungarian orchestra, Angel and Abbey Road Studios, it is only appropriate that those names are on the CD sleeve of NEPV. When my jazz club, orchestra musician friends here in the US - to whom I am sharign the music - see the details "recorded in angel studio and mastered at abbey road studios" - not only will they recommend the same to their friends to buy from ITUNES, they themselves might buy the original CD! already many of my musician friends here know abt Raaja Sir's music, but their only major complaint has been the quality of the recording as well as the CD sleeve notes that contain no details abt the studio etc etc. at least now we have an album with top-notch recording and mastering done at world-renowned studios! having taken so much time to promote and then release the CDs, I seriously request SONY Music South, to at least include the recording studio, engineers, orchestra names in the second batch of CDs that I have learnt through online sources, that are being made. I guarantee you - from my experience here - ppl in the West WANT TO BUY ONLY ORIGINAL CDs - and they want the whole packaging done professionally - if SONY music includes all the details as I have mentioned, there will be 100s to buy NEPV here and in Europe! Please pass on the above to your colleagues dealing with the actual CD making and packaging, and I would rather buy my set of CDs that have the information of the recording/ mixing/ mastering studios and the orchestra and the engineers involved - this will also boost the market value in a BIG way!
also I have been reading several complaints abt the CDs that ppl have already bought - for ex, some of my friends opened the CD files in real player, the album name is shown as "Yeto Vellipoyindi Manasu" and all songs are listed in Telugu and they had bought the tamil version NEPV CD and not YVM!
and my Andhra friends who have bought Telugu CD are complaining that it can easily pass off as pirated mp3 cd"
and here is the reply i received from Sony Music South:
"All the credits in the CD inlay are provided and designed by production house in consultation with the music director of the movie, we don’t have any hold to get this printed on the CD. Anyways I accept your point and will try to incorporate the same on our future productions"
and my response to that: "while I do understand what you said abt the music director's consent, am also pretty sure that, if SONY approaches the production house and the music director with a very specific request to include the names of the recording studios, engineers and orchestra, I dont see how or why they would refuse to include the same ? also, if you recall, when Raaja Sir's 'Thiruvasagam' was released, the CD showed everything incl the names of Oscar/Grammy winning lyricist, sound enginner, Stephen Schwartz and Richard King besides the name of the Hungarian conductor and orchestra ! so, why not the same for NEPV ? anyway, I do hope and request that SONY considers my request seriously, and do the needful.
trust me, even very small bands here have a very professionally packaged CD when they produce an album ! and we are talking abt one of the most creative albums to come out of India in recent times, by our most accomplised composer genius! the album deserves much better packaging in terms of the CD product - thats all am saying ! once again, I thank you for your patience"
NO response since then!
i remember feeling for IR when SONY didnt ultimately take up TiS.....we all wanted SONY to take up TiS but now after seeing all this happening in NEPV I am feeling much relieved that it didnt ultimately go to SONY music south! It was a blessing in disguise, in a way!
who knows, maybe "SONY world music" does thin gs more professionally!
canada concert
Thanks irir123. Hope these guys wake up and do something about it. Whys it that with other productions it's never been the case? They have dodged your main question and are trying to make excuses. No ownership at all!
Second episode by Balu Mahendra sir. The way he explains, who determines the music for a film? Balu sir :notworthy:.

Kamesh Bro,
VTV audio was the most successful in 2010 and the numbers were not revealed by Sony Music. They do not release collectors editions for album which has not fared well in the market. The business that ARR albums do is something extraordinary and hence his whopping price tag. Just for reference, I can quote Komaram Puli - a dud from ARR in recent times - fetched a platinum disc. Let alone VTV.
Simple logic, bro. Endhiran sold around 2.5 lakhs in the first 48 hours. Yes, there is an additional Rajni factor to it. But neither Chandramukhi nor Kuselan reached half the number that Endhiran made. As I said earlier, Puli fetched platinum disc. And this, in a market that ARR had hardly explored. This is how ARR albums sell. 45000 may be an achievement for other composers but not for ARR.
If that's the case, think of an album which brought ARR and GVM together for the first time. And VTV was ARR's first tamil release post his twin Oscar win. IIRC, it created a new record in Amazon pre-ordering. This made GVM commit ARR for both NEP and Yohan. But ARR's sabbatical in 2011 didn't help things.
This is a thread to discuss IR's albums. It's better if we stick to the topic. Too much of a digression into other composer's schedules and sabbaticals would only lead to rabble rousing.
FYI, every telugu album these days celebrates double, triple platinum disks. Komaram puli fetching a platinum disk is hardly a news. Pavan Kalyan's stardom always plays a huge role in audio sales. His latest album GabbarSingh (DSP) smashed all previous records in Audio sales, despite being a mediocre album. That doesn't make DSP the best MD out there.
Teja,
I know it's a thread for IR related discussions. VTV was not brought here by any ARR fan. But when facts are twisted, then that calls for an explanation. Because there are people who consider hub as a trustworthy source of info.
I also know that selling a Rajni album or Pawan album is quite easy. But selling a Shantanu album requires 'something'. Just my two cents. Let's continue with IR related discussions. :)
The facts quoted by me was told to me by an authorised official in the sony office in chennai when i met him face to face
BIG Music has stopped operations after Kuselan and Think music is thinking about Music cd sales post Endiran : I believe the sony guys more and there is a lot of inside story in this
PERIOD
Think Music still releases audio CDs. Its a brand owned by Sathyam cinemas and you can see their cds in the food counters. Even yesterday I saw one of their teasers. Kaliyugam?
Even I saw in Sify, as quoted by a Sony Music official, that VTV audio has created history then. Like you, even I believe Sony music guys. Need to check the inside story of Sony Music still running behind ARR albums in spite of VTV selling only 45K. PERIOD.

rajaalltheway,
Can you give me a call sometime. I have lost your number.

Good joke.. Rajini & Shankar didnt play a part in Enthiran and you are comparing that with Chandramuki (P Vasu) after Baba debacle..and a guest appearance in Kuselan...
Would be intersting to see how Raavan and others sold in the same period...
I really dont think atleast in tamilnadu there wouldnt be any drastic difference between the pull from ARR, Haris or Yuvan
It is only the nature of the project that makes the difference when it comes to sales...Which again NEP has proved..
That is just about sales...
Puthiya Theerangal for purchase on flipkart: http://www.flipkart.com/puthiya-thee...3-8a17fee050ad
:-D
Just telling that CD sales is not determined by MD alone and more so by the project these days.
Comparing Endhiran sales with chandramuki or Kuselan is a complete joke as endhiran was a combo of Rajini, shankar, arr and the massive effort from sun group
That is why its the whole nature of project that decideds the sales of CDs...That is why Yuvan, Harris have given huge sales hits like ARR
and now IR has done it..with NEPV
Anyway why to discuss petty sales in IR thread...we have been there and done it (still doing it...)...
Will never forget an incident where a old guy in my village came to a CD shop asking for Mudal Mariyadai ..That for me is true sale

Kannukkul Nilavu, Kadhalukku Mariyadhai and Friends were the superhits from the combination of Vijay and Isaignani Ilayaraja. Now we hear that Ameer, who is likely to direct Kannabiran with Vijay in the lead, is keen to rope in the ace composer to do the music for the film.
In a recent function Ameer publicly asked Ilayaraja if he would do the music for Kannabiran, for which the composer mocked at the director saying his hands have sword and blood stains and that Yuvan would suit him better than himself. However, Ameer is in no mindset to give up. He is likely to approach him again
Only difference I see in the sales now and then is, people don't buy the music until they listen to it, those days. This was true even with ILaiyaraaja. Only after it has been aired on either TVs or Radios or after watching the movie, and they like it, they buy it. The living style also comes into picture, they cannot not afford to buy many times. Now, people just go for the brand without even listening to it, assuming it will be good. We hear nowadays that CDs are sold out within 24 hours/48 hours after its release. Definitely they would not have listened to it before buying. Just saying, even with huge sales nowadays, we cannot say the music is best and vice versa. Those days it was true.

but we can tolerate this break becos he doesn leave us starving... rockstar was a big feast for us...
anyway, 4 big albums slated to release in the next one year...
gearing up for kochadayan, kadal, mariyaan & I... looks like yohan with GVM is dropped...
before NEP was announced GVM was working on Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikkaalam which was announced with ARR as MD... check the first page of the NEP thread in TF section... it was reported that they composed a couple of songs too... apram enna aachunu theriyala... adhudhaan NEP'nu kooda sonnanga modhal'la... orae conpees...
We are talking about chartbusters...i really doubt sakkarakatti is one..
It could have been a hit..even james vasanthan had a hit with new team etc...
See I am not denying that Rahman is commercially the best (today)..but not by much in Tamil ..and what decides chart busters these days is the nature of projects as the heavy marketing and repeated playing by FM/TV impacts sales ...Rahman has always had the benefit of that..and that is what NEP proves..
And of course having huge sales doesnt have anything to with quality.Quite the opposite
We are seeing the typical growth of western music industry here...
Big production houses, Big noise, Pop catchy music...
There will be a time soon that for quality avant grade music we need to look beyond the main stream music
That is why raja romba simplea thirupi thirupi solraru... hit mukkiyamilla..tune than mukkiyam..dheerka dharisi
sakkarakatti was a chartbuster and thats the only reason it was brought into the discussion here...
and we are speaking only about the cd sales ... and u have switched the goal post to quality of music... thats a different topic altogether and this is not the moment and place for that...
