* In the song "Tere Mere Sapne" from the film ``Guide," there is an eclectic mix of the traditional and modern facets. Although S. D. Burman has set the song in a rare raag, Gaaraa, the saxophone in short spells for a Jazz effect by Manohari Singh in the original added novelty. Manohari Dada, going strong with half a century of association with the industry, was present at the programme to perform live for a thundering applause from the audience.
* Raag Maand (known as Hemant too) has 24 versions of it sung in the desert land of Rajasthan, and Pahadi originates in Jammu's folk songs, said Ajoy.
* Raag Keeravani was mirrored in many forms: Rafi's "Yaad Na Aaye" was brought to life by Javed Ali, while Ajoy gave a Hindustani touch followed by Carnatic and then traversed the scales effortlessly for a jazz configuration.
* Reliving C. Ramachandra's music in Bhairavi was Mahalakshmi and Javed in "Kaise Avoon Jamuna Ke Teer" while Ajoy brought it out in tappa, khayal, tumri and the Iranian and Afghanistan versions in different taals.

I was reading the general thread on raags in hindi film songs. I can suggest the ragas. I am pretty sure I shall get it right, at least to the neighborhood. "manamohana" is in raag "jaijaivanti" and not "madhuvanti". It will be hard for me to make a list of songs from this thread. Has anyone compiled a list that I can start from?
Thanks

The film stars Shashi Kapoor, Raakhee, Narendra Nath, Nazir Hussain, Iftekhar, S N Banerjee, Anita Guha and Asit Sen. This is in raag Pahaadi. One of the most-used ragas in hindi films, and also in north indian film music in general.
Now that you reminded, here is another Pahadi in its full glory..

Wonderful. Happened to check about this Raag Pahaadi and found this link informative with recomendation of few hindi songs.
http://www.soundofindia.com/raaga_details.asp?raaga=72
Heard few of them, and it was just amazing to listen after having an idea of what you are listening to.
But I tend to feel that this raag is quite appealing when its used for a pathos song. How come its soothing for duets too ? Does all raags have this same property or is/are there exceptions ?
Pahadi has a rustic feel, but it's a versatile raga - meaning that it lends itself to other feels in light-classical songs. Sivaranjani and Sindhu bairavi are two other versatile ones. You can do both the happiest and saddest songs with them. No wonder the three are very popular in film songs..
Of course not too many ragas are such versatile - normally! If the composer is creative enough, theoretically any feel can be brought from any raga. It sure is challenging for some ragas, and may sound far-fetched. But IR is an exception to all this. :smile2: He has made a dappankuthu out of chakravagam and a pathos song in mohanam!
I see ...
Checked the list of Raags of IR songs posted by Karthickcb and was amazed to find these songs under the Raga Chakravagam - they all sound entire different :
- Appa Kada Anna Kili (Payul Puli)
- Marandhen Pirandhen (Gitanjali Devotional)
- Vanithamani Vanamogini (Vikaram)
To an amature like myself, these 3 songs don't have the same sound. Amazing.
But I find that this Raga was used by IR for duets alone in Film Music and Mohanam is mixed, the female solo taking the centre stage.
- Abc Nee Vaasi (Kaidhiyin Dairy) is a jolly song, now I find it more jolly.
- Poovil Vandu (Kadhal Oviyam) super Pattu
- Oru Ragam Padalodu (Anandha Ragam) Yesudas humming just ignites means. Did you mean the pathos version of this song or is there another ?
By the by, all my favorite songs are under Mohanam Raga, thus making it my favorite Raga ... LoL
Excuses for deviating from the thread topic in the above post :

People should listen to such songs daily (not to forget Thiruvasagam, Other IR melodies & Jazz) as a break from visiting doctors.
maapi,
That's also mohanam :) Called Bhoopali in hindustani..
Pls post the tamil song related discussions under its suitable thread. I'll respond there..
Wonderful.
You see, it took me years to just come to know that the songs I hear often fall under Mohanam. I would like to know more about this raga (or ragas in general).
Can you suggest me a book that covers the basics and goes into details about them ? Internet source has limited autenticity and I always go by books which are researched and explained by authors who have authority over a particular field/subject.
mappi,
For basics I think wiki is ok. If you really want a book, Raga nidhi (B Subba rao) is considered quite authoritative. But this is just the theory of it. The real raga beauty can, of course, be understood only by listening to various compositions and renditions.
Lakshman and others may have better book recommendations.
I came across this site : http://www.chembur.com/carnatic/
There are list of books in there, think I will start with author Rao.
Here is a song I listen to often (eventhough, I do not understand it completely, I am usually awstuck with it. I listen to it basicially for the tabla beats/rythms).
From 3m23s, the way she vibrates her voice is mesmerising, what is the term for such voice modulation in Carnatic/Hindustani music ?

Pls post in suitable thread, I'm sure there are experts like Lakshman who will answer.
