Mean Streets
pointless,no story at all...only saving grace is Deniro's stunning performance as Jhonny Boy...realising an actor's presence is so crucial for a film..credit to MS for bringing out that..
enna ippadi sollitingga.
I now think Mean Street is Scorcese's best. This is the Scorcese that film fans/critics loved that Academy Award shunned. F__ all that De Caprio shits!
i felt the whole movie was not heading anywhere...boring lengthy bar sequences too...thought Charlie's uncle is going to do something at the end...payapulla edhume seyala...
but Deniro was superb
agree with u on Decaprio shits..his best IMO was with Deniro...
The unpredictable factor (your expectation on Charlie's uncle) is what makes the film works. In short, it was an anthi-thesis of the romance in the Godfather film. Interesting writeup/interview here that may make you change your mind (intha vishayattula adiyEn evangelist).
Thanks Grouch
really good one..Scorcese's belief in what the priest said ..that was good in the film too..the friendship was also shown well...the guy that shoots in the end is Scorcese himself...wow..lacked a plot i thought...btw the scene where Deniro cries to Kietel..amazing acting...any words on Deniro from u on that performance?...and few more on the Deniro/Pacino who is better never ending debate?...whenever i see a film of either one of them i get this question..
If you are looking for good plot, nah, you can't find it. Hopefully you will enjoy it more on a revisit. (The same Scorcese reappears as a passenger fantasising about killing his wife in Taxi Driver).
oh didnt know that...:)..yea will revisit again..
Grouch I know you are a 70s guy but was Mean streets in your list of top ten favorites?. I know Apocalypse now is the highest.
Mean streets and serpico - two films i regret not watching in n/f while i was there.
Actually Raging Bull is in the list. Watched Mean Street recently and was really impressed. Raging Bull more on acting, and De Niro coerced Scorcese into making it. But Mean Street is as personal he gets, and its realness, the humour really impressed me this time. athAn, best of Scorcese-nu sonnEn. My yet-to-be amended list.
What's n/f, Stan? I thought you were in city of brotherly lauvs...

apdiye a word on Deniro/Pacino comparison and ur fav :)
Oh wow....that'd be difficult, can go stage by stage.
70s, De Niro's energy and Pacino's intensity (can be other way round too) helped to redefine on screen performance.
80s poor output from both, but vanthavarai lAbam.
90s downfall of de Niro after Casino, Pacino holding on but fast becoming a sad case of self-spoof.
00s de Niro here and there, and there, wooosh, goes Pacino.
Rendu pErukkum innum "athu" irukku, they are just after paycheques, and occasionally stumble into some good stuff.
Like my love for both Kamal and Rajini, I love them both but just as slightly tilted. de Niro = 55%, Pacino 45% (same ration for Kamal/Rajini)
I wished both had done film for Woody Allen, but their New York is different from Woody's, so might not have worked. Pacino with Scorcese back in 70s would have been superawesome, as would de Niro with Lumet.
thnx once again Grouch..:)
my fav will be Pacino to Deniro...in the same 55-45...Michael Corleone of Godfather 2 is the difference for me...just cant get over that performance...
Pacino stopped being a serious actor after 70's. Is this even a debate? Nicholson vs De niro would be more interesting.
Adhaane. engada aalai kaanomenu nenachen.
If not for Lumet, I'd not even consider Pacino as a 'good' actor, nevermind 'great'.
As for screen presence and intensity, it's never quite as organic as Cagney I'd think, but still very arresting..
It was fun watching "Heat", Pacino could have thrown up on the table and stuck his face into it, to take attention away from De niro. And he would still fail.
Pacino's idea of pure evil, the devil himself, in The Devil's Advocate, shows how imaginatively ham he is in every way to De niro, watch Angel heart.
Did De Palma destroy Pacino? Discuss.
All the good work that Jerry Schatzberg, Coppola, Lumet and even Norman Jewinson (last time Pacino did 'intensity' without being 1-dimensional) went off like Poof.
Let's take his remakes, all the good 'ticks' in SoaW comes from Vittoria Gassman and his mannered suffering feel overcooked compared to Skarsgard. How is this guy even considered a touchstone of 'great acting' is beyond me.
De niro's remakes have dramatically differed and offer a nuanced critique of the original in context of the adaptation, be it Cape Fear or Everybody's Fine..
adada, Thilak, can't argue on the post 80s Pacino (except, maybe, GF3). But I like the haming it up Pacino, athukunu oru arugatha vEnum and he has it.
Pacino was consistent in 70s, including the none Lumet ones. Case in point Scarecrow, funny and almost tragic. Really heartwarming performance.
Bobby Deerfield parkala, so not sure. ...and justice for all, okay bordering on hoo-ha towards the end (you're out of order!), but again another tragic-comedy (hillarious helicopter scene).
And then you have both Godfather films and the Lumet ones where he really scores. He was up there, then slipped.
Good comparison Nicholson/de Niro, have you watched both of them in The Great Tycoon? Clash of style. In fact, you got the 70s Rajini/Kamal going on there, in terms of performance (one just style and energy, the other "method" or whatever you call it).
De Palma ruined Al, yup, that terrible accent in Scarface should have blackballed Brian from ever directing.
"Mean Streets" I'm not too fond of it now, but I did feel at the time that's the closest Scorsese will come to 'nod' Fellini, Rossellini.
All his other films, Goodfellas/Casino what not, did not offer an unbridled world of low-time thugs. But they were masterclasses in filmmaking. Wasn't surprised to know Alexander Payne did Election inspired by editing and narrative choices of Casino. It's an influential film for many reasons. Personal favorite ahead of Goodfellas. How De niro lets Pesci steam off in Casino/Goodfellas is way beyond Pacino's "mode"..
Could Pacino ever do those kind of roles?
Pacino (Any era) wouldn't cut it as Johnny Boy, Sam Rothstein, James Conway.. Nevermind Travis Bickle, Jake LaMotta, Rupert Pupkin.. There's a reason why Marty never went after Pacino when he had Bob & Keitel, and if not Bob, Nicholson..
Agree on those roles Pacino cannot justify, athAn 55/45 mark.
You mean 'The Last Tycoon'? Yeah, they did have a masterful 'friction' that lasted for few seconds, wish Nicholson's part was longer. Only Kazan could bring together Mitchum, Nicholson and De niro. Those were the days. These days you get 'The Score' which isn't really epic after all with tepid plot and tepid parts, and with Norton's career going down the drain.
 Great Gatsby confusion.Kazan out of retirement and look at the gem. It should have got better recognition.
Brando-vukAga theatrela poyee pArthen liked it then, don't think I can take it now.
Brando biggest disappointment. Looked unhealthily obese..

Johnny Greenwood'ku oru statuette parcel
Film of the year!
Ju-On: The Grudge
Another film which proves that original is always better.
Piranha - 3DD - More like 38 D err ...Movie was stupid but made me realize how badly I miss spring time America.
Rock of Ages - Tom Cruise . For a guy who is always billed as a star his performance is really good as a rock star. Too many big names and the songs get to you after a point of time. Still an ok film.
mutham muttam Kuthu Kuthu !!
Watched the Bourne trilogy. Many people told me that its one of the finest action movies ever made. I'm not a fan of action, typical american action films that is and this one didn't prove otherwise. Very similar to my reaction to the Die Hard movies, this was good for a one-time watch sure, but nothing close to great. I'm fortunate to have disliked the action genre.
same here...
bourne first was very good... second was interesting... third i din get a urge to watch as there will be nothing new/different with respect to the plot...
same with oceans 11/12 and i gave up on 13..
