Kamal's choice of Lingu is very poor. That's the primary reason other than the fact that tamil movie making is a very risky business.

The day corporates like UTV,eros entered TN film industry it become risky business for producers/distributors...
before it depends on trust..manja pai vachi business pannaalum pechila suttham, nermai, vittukoduthal irukkum..
but corporates are hell ,they are greedy and not ready to wait..
My two cents:
The big production houses in the business were thinking more than monetary benefits. They also need to protect their legacy (enga appachi eppadi sonnaru/appadi sonnaru etc).
At the time, the industry growth was not as big as now, to certain extent our own country itself). One of the recent studies from Deloitte concluded that the TFI would grow more than 10% per annum in short time which is higher than GDP growth. I believe the size of the industry has grown double since the days of chandramukhi/Mumbai express days. Previously, it might have taken two decades to double the size. Any industry that has growth more than growth of country will attract more investors. In addition, Film industry is a glamour and blah blah…..The new crop of producers see the growth potential and wanted to be part of the band wagon to mint money. But do they completely understand the business and look in to long term? Who knows? one of the reasons is the industry itself has a lot of grey area starting from production cost, cost of capital (vatti), salary, ticket price, method of transaction etc….Forget about the IT return…. when the industry grows fast, the govt need to facilitate few items such a way that the business does it in legitimate way. infact, it gives high potential for govt to increase revenue.
Digression: What is the need of “Tax exemption for movies with Tamil title”? Does Tamil language develop? Instead collect tax and transfer to Tamil research organizations as a method of value capturing? Those guys are struggling for funding….
But industry is moved from family owned business. IMO, it is good. But does it moves in to right direction? It is questionable. However, the move is inevitable. Off late, kamal spends less time on script/character and more time on “Katta panchayat”. To certain extent, he is struggling to understand the dynamics of industry and new people (particularly their financial position and commitments).[/
These days theaters and cine industries are slowly dying. Brand name people AVM, Sathya movies, Devar films, KRG and Sujatha films (Balaji) are not making movies anymore. Even Madras talkies is fading. Only people like AM Ratanam, Lingu, Gnavel raja are the producers these days. They put 25% and rest of it is from financiers! I think cinema is slowly dying. You have got to make most of it in first two weeks. If you dont nobody can save your movie. That's the situation now!
The current power house is vishal film factory:lol2: ethanai flops, but still steady:bow:
+1.. Problems are created by insiders to defeat their opponents. Because of that none of the big hero's movies are getting any big profits to the producers. Adding to that there are people in responsible positions of film industry like prodeucer council, distribeetor group, naadigar sangam, theeeter owners group all want to show that they have a say in every film's release. These so called heads of these groups want to show their existence / prominence by creating problems and later do katta panjayatthu to solve the problems.
That's why KH has taken the safe route of distributing movie overseas as part of his share. Till the problems of TFI are getting settled here, looks like he might not get in to production as well. Intelligent and safe decision...
