The 100 years of Cinema celebration, organized by the SIFCC, was kicked-off in a grand manner yesterday at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. Many prominent personalities from the industry were honored, as reported earlier.

The stars and personalities who attended the event yesterday and made it all the more special were Rajini, Kamal, Vijay, Ajith, Vikram, Prabhu with his son Vikram, Sowcar Janaki, Aishwarya Dhanush, Sivakumar, Ilayaraja, Jayapradha, K.Balachander, Trisha, Simran, Meena, Saroja Devi, Manorama, Balakrishna, P Vasu, AVM Saravanan, Bhagyaraj, Dharani, Boney Kapoor, Abirami Ramanathan, Radha with her daughters Thulasi and Karthika along with the Honorable Ministers of the TN Govt, to name a few. The absence of one of the foremost writers in the Tamil film industry, M.Karunanidhi was sorely felt by many.

The likes of Sarath Kumar, Vikraman, Editor Mohan, AVM Saravanan were seated on the dais as the Chief Minister of the State, J.Jayalalithaa inaugurated the gala event, with a brilliant speech about the history of cinema and Indian Cinema's emergence.

Today, the Kannada industry's representatives put on a great show with the likes of Ramesh Aravind performing. Kamal Haasan gave away awards to some of the prominent Kannada filmmakers.

The Telugu and Malayalm industries would be performing in the evening and tomorrow morning respectively.

Neenga yaara solraenga ? Its not a great practice in any case.

Given a chance of not paying royalty, and not getting caught, anybody will do it. Naama oorla easia mattikuvanga, thats why its paid. Vijay's velayutham costume was taken from assassin creed video game or the still in thuppakki from officer and gentleman ? No royalty was paid there either.

At any rate, Vijay's thuppakki and other movies with original scripts will rank higher than his telugu remakes ... which i thought he got out of.

IMO, remake kills creativity in an actor. Its ok if a storyline is adapted for a totally fresh screen play .. but remaking with a scene by scene xerox is what I was talking about. Again I'm saying in general terms not with reference to anybody in particular. Telugu movies are not like a class apart .. Just run of the mill stories .. Vijay has the potential to do better ...

The new crop of actors/directors are doing well in coming out with decent scripts and screen play.

Absolutely. Although fine to cater to the front benchers and hardcore fans, top actors be it Ajit or Vijay, should take up some challenging roles as well.

Mullum-Malarum was a class movie. Last scene Rajini (with a lost arm) looking over secret marriage of his sister with Sarath Babu moistens my eyes even today ..

What's common betwen Vijay and Akshay Kumar ?

Namma Ilayathalapathy Vijay and Bollywood's Akshay Kumar have a lot in common. The Khiladi Kumar is not only working in the Hindi remake of Vijay-starrer Thuppaki, but he has also danced to the tunes of the Hindi version of Appadi Podu in his Boss. The number, incidentally, was picturised on Vijay and Trisha in the hit film, Ghilli. Atharvaa, Priya to shoot in Italy Akshay Kumar had got the rights of Appadi Podu, and P.A.Deepak (who has worked as sound engineer in Superstar Rajinikanth's Endhiran) has composed the Hindi version of the song, Hum Na Tode.

While the original song was a romantic number, with Vijay and Trisha gyrating to it, the Hindi version has more of a 'en kitta modhadhe' appeal, with Akshay warning the goons. Interestingly, the Hindi version also features a guest appearance by Prabhu Dheva.

What next for Vijay after Murugadoss in 2014?

There are some rumors floating around that Ilayathalapathy Vijay has signed on for another film with K.Balachander's Kavithalaya Productions, after he is done with his A.R.Murugadoss film in 2014. When we got in touch with sources close to Vijay, they rubbished it by saying that Vijay is solely focused on Jilla for now and the Murugadoss project after that.

Talks of his association with director Shankar and with Kavithalaya Productions, are just unsubstantiated rumors as of now.

The Murugadoss project will be funded by Ayngaran International and will feature the likes of Samantha and comedian Sathish alongside Vijay.

It must be noted that Vijay had done the successful Thirumalai for Kavithalaya Productions a decade back, and turned around his career big time.

Kajal Agarwal continues to be a shining star down South and she has stormed the hearts of many youngsters thanks to her naughty charm and perfect figure. Up next for her in Tamil would be All in All Azhaguraja and Jilla, in which she is paired with the likes of Karthi and Vijay. This would be her second outing with these popular heroes.

In AAA, she would be called Chitra Devi Priya and she has had a ball on the sets and literally used to die laughing on the sets everyday. She understood all the Tamil dialogues written by Director Rajesh in order to fully appreciate the comedy and feels that Santhanam and Karthi are equally crazy.

She feels Karthi has mastered his craft as an actor and thanks to their bonding in Naan Mahaan Alla back in 2010, their vibes in AAA were that much livelier. She is inspired by Karthi's quest for perfection while performing for his shots.

In Jilla, she would be having an action-oriented role and is excited about reuniting with Vijay again after the blockbuster Thuppakki in 2012. The unit still has some portions left to shoot and they might visit Slovenia or Bulgaria to can a few songs.

Kamal Haasan on 7th November turned 59 and as usual he was busy with his routine charity works that he does on his birthdays. Later, he hosted a private party for his industry friends, we hear. Actor Vijay, Madhavan, Andrea, Priyadharshan, Santhana Bharathy, Crazy Mohan, the Vishwaroopam 2 team and other close friends of Kamal joined the party and wished the legend.

It is also said that a bunch of talented kids gave a special musical performance for Kamal at the party and the actor also joined them in singing a few of his favourite numbers. The actor also gave a small performance with his Mridhangam (a percussion instrument).

The title superstar has been used specially for RajiniKant. To each his own .. From the MGR/Shivaji days through Kamal/Rajini today, we have seen that they enjoyed unique titles given by fans and others. MGR = Makkal Thilagam, Shivaji = Nadigar Thilagam, Kamal = UlagaNaayagan, Rajini= Superstar. Rajini just popularized that superstar tag. No one would dream of using 'Makkal Thilagam' today. It would make more sense if Vijay has his own unique title. Even IllayaThalapathi is taken after what used to be Rajini's movie.

In my view there's no next superstar after Rajini ... that tag is retired for good. Just a thought. What do you all feel ?

When Kajal was asked who in Kollywood needed a serious makeover, she said it is Vijay and answered Shriya to the question on who she thinks must retire from the tinsel town. And Arya spoke his mind when he replied "Kajal" to the question on who he thinks is the most overrated heroine. But all that was controversial questions. While even the squirmish questions don't put off Kajal, here's a safe one which was fired at her. When asked which Tamil film is the best in her career, the actress was spontaneous with the answer 'Thupakki'.

Further, she added excitedly that working with Vijay is the best of her work experiences. So looks like Nesan's 'Jilla' team is a cool work place for Kajal, as she is paired up with Vijay once again, after AR Murugadoss's 'Thupakki'.

having more theatres doesn't make it the biggest market, bollywood is the biggest market. Tamil cinema has the second biggest market after bollywood worldwide.

Naalaya Theerpu released on 4th December 1992. And its 21 years in Tamil cinema for Vijay. I still remember a tamil magazine which ridiculed his looks and the same magazine was waiting for his interviews after a decade. He might not have the fair skin or well toned body or extra ordinary acting skills but still remains the darling of masses. Female fan following for actors is as consistent as gold prices in India. But this man has considerable amount of female fans to boast of. And you pick any kid in the public and ask who is his/her favourite actor in Tamil. You will understand why he is one of the most bankable actors in the industry. His success can be attributed to hard work, discipline backed up by good planning. He knows his limitations, contains himself within the limits and plays to the galleries. Same strategy earlier adopted by MGR and Rajni. With many promising projects in the pipeline, his stardom is only going to shoot up and I wish him good health and all success. :)

His first film Naalaya Theerpu released on December 3, 1992. From very humble beginning, Vijay is today one of the top three stars in Kollywood whose films do business of more than 50 Crore.

ஆனால், ‘பூவே உனக்காக’ படத்தின்மூலம் இந்த வளையத்தை உடைத்து இவரை வெளியே கொண்டு வந்தார் இயக்குனர் விக்ரமன். ‘விஷ்ணு’, ‘ரசிகன்’, ‘கோயம்புத்தூர் மாப்ளே’ போன்ற படங்கள் மக்கள் மத்தியில் விஜய்யை பற்றி உருவாக்கி வைத்திருந்த எண்ணங்களைச் சட்டென்று மாற்றிப்போட்டது ‘பூவே உனக்காக’. விஜய்யை தமிழ் சினிமாவிற்கு ஒரு நடிகராக அடையாளம் காட்டியது. குறிப்பாக, இந்தப் படத்தில் விஜய் க்ளைமாக்ஸில் பேசும் காதல் வசனங்கள் ரசிகர்களிடையே பிரபலமாகின. ‘பூவே உனக்காக’ விஜய்யின் வெற்றியின் முதல் படிக்கட்டு என்றுதான் சொல்லவேண்டும். சூப்பர் குட் ஃபிலிம்ஸ் தயாரிப்பில் பாலசேகரன் இயக்கத்தில் வெளியான ‘லவ்டுடே’ படத்தின் வெள்ளிவிழா கண்ட வெற்றி இளைஞர்களிடம் இவருக்கான தனி இடத்தை உறுதிப்படுத்தியது.

1998ல் சங்கிலி முருகன் தயாரிப்பில், ஃபாசில் இயக்கத்தில் வெளிவந்த ‘காதலுக்கு மரியாதை’ விஜய்யை தங்கள் வீட்டு செல்லப்பிள்ளையாக அனைவரையும் உணர வைத்தது. இந்தப் படத்தின் வெற்றி அதுவரை இளைஞர்கள் மட்டுமே பார்த்து வந்த விஜய்யின் படங்களுக்கு வயதானவர்களையும் இழுத்துவர ஆரம்பித்தது. வித்தியாசமான வேடத்தில் முயற்சி செய்வோமே என ‘பிரியமுடன்’ படத்தில் ஆன்ட்டி ஹீரோவாக சவாலான வேடத்தையும் ஏற்று சாதித்துக் காட்டினார் விஜய்.

சூப்பர் குட் ஃபிலிம்ஸ் தயாரிப்பில், எழிலின் இயக்கத்தில் வெளியான ‘துள்ளாத மனமும் துள்ளும்’ படத்தில் அவர் ஏற்றிருந்த ‘குட்டி’ கதாபாத்திரமும் சிம்ரனுக்கும் அவருக்குமான கவித்துமான காதலும் ரசிகர்களை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் தியேட்டர்களுக்கு அழைத்து வந்தன. அருமையான கதை, இனிமையான பாடல்களுடன் விஜய்யின் நடிப்பும் நடனமும் நகைச்சுவையும் இந்த படத்தை வெள்ளிவிழா காண வைத்தன..

ஏ.எம்.ரத்னம் தயாரிப்பில், எஸ்.ஜே.சூர்யாவின் இயக்கத்தில் வெளியான ‘குஷி’ படத்தின் மூலம் விஜய்யின் இன்னொரு பரிமாணம் வெளிப்பட்டது. காதலர்களுக்குள் ஏற்படும் ஈகோவை அற்புதமாக பிரதிபலித்திருந்தார் விஜய். சில படங்கள் சரியாக போகாதிருந்த நிலையில் விஜய்க்கு புது ரத்தம் பாய்ச்சியது ‘குஷி’.

காதல் நாயகனாகவே வலம் வந்து கொண்டு இருந்த விஜய்க்கு இயக்குனர் ரமணா திருப்பத்தைக் கொடுத்தார். அவர் இயக்கிய ‘திருமலை’ படம் விஜய்யை ஆக்ஷன் ஹீரோவாக மாற்றியதோடு, ‘பஞ்ச்’ டயலாக் பேசவும் வைத்தது. இந்த படத்திலிருந்துதான் விஜய்க்கு என்று ஒரு மாஸ் உருவானது என்றுகூட சொல்லலாம். விஜய் நடித்த படமென்றால் நிச்சயம் ‘கல்லா கட்டும்’ என்று தியேட்டர் அதிபர்களும் நம்பத் தொடங்கியது இந்த காலகட்டத்தில்தான்.

vijay‘தில்’, ‘தூள்’ என்று தொடர் ஹிட்டுக்களை கொடுத்துவந்த இயக்குனர் தரணி தெலுங்கில் மகேஷ்பாபு நடித்த ‘ஒக்கடு’ படத்தின் ரீமேக்கிற்காக விஜய்யை சந்தித்தார். அந்த சந்திப்பு விஜய்யின் சரித்திரத்தையே மாற்றி எழுதியது. 2005ல் ஏ.எம்.ரத்னம் தயாரிப்பில் வெளியான ‘கில்லி’ திரைப்படத்தின் வீச்சு, படம் பார்த்துவிட்டு தியேட்டரை விட்டு வெளியே வந்தவர்களின் பரவசமான முகங்களில் பிரதிபலித்தது. ‘அப்படிப் போடு... போடு’ என்று தமிழ்நாடே ஆடித் தீர்த்தது. தன்னை சுற்றி வளைத்த பல நூறு பேரை ஒற்றை ஆளாய் சமாளித்த விஜய்யின் சாகசம் ஏன், எப்படி என்று கேட்காமல் ரசிகர்களை வாய் பிளக்க வைத்தது. சொல்லப்போனால் சிறு குழந்தைகள்கூட விஜய்க்கு ரசிகர்களாக மாற ஆரம்பித்தது இந்த தருணத்தில்தான்.

இயக்குனர் பேரரசுவின் காம்பினேஷனில் ‘திருப்பாச்சி’யும் ‘சிவகாசி’யும் விஜய்யின் வெற்றிக்கு கலர் சாயங்கள் பூசின. ‘திருப்பாச்சி’ படத்தில் அவரின் தங்கை சென்டிமென்ட் தாய்மார்களிடையே பரவசத்தை ஏற்படுத்த, எதிரிகளை வீழ்த்த அவர் வகுக்கும் வியூகம் ரசிகர்களிடம் கைதட்டலை அள்ளியது. குறிப்பாக திருப்பாச்சி அருவா பற்றி வில்லனிடம் அவர் பேசும் வசனம் அன்றைய குழந்தைகளின் ரைமிங்காகவே மாறிப்போனது.

அடுத்து வந்த சில படங்கள் விஜய்க்கு சரியாகப் போகாத நிலையில், பிரபுதேவாவின் இயக்கத்தில் வெளியான தெலுங்கு ரீமேக்கான ‘போக்கிரி’ அசுரத்தனமான வெற்றியைப் பெற்று விஜய்யின் பின்னடைவைப் போக்கி முன்னுக்குக் கொண்டு வந்தது. ‘போக்கிரி’யாக ரவுடிகளை பொளந்துகட்டும் விஜய், கடைசியில் போலீஸ் அதிகாரி என தெரியவரும் அந்த ட்விஸ்ட் ரசிகர்களுக்கு எதிர்பாராத போனஸ். குறிப்பாக, இந்தப் படத்தில் விஜய்யின் டயலாக் டெலிவரியும், பாடி லாங்குவேஜ்ஜும் ரசிகர்களுக்கு புதிய அனுபவத்தைக் கொடுத்தது. ‘‘நான் ஒரு தடவை முடிவு பண்ணிட்டேன்னா என் பேச்சை நானே கேட்கமாட்டேன்’’ என்று விஜய் பேசும் வசனத்தை படம் பார்த்துவிட்டு வந்த ஒவ்வொருவரும் தங்களுக்கு தேவையான இடங்களில் எல்லாம் பேச ஆரம்பித்தார்கள்.

வெற்றி, தோல்வி என மாறி மாறி வந்தாலும் சில காலகட்டங்கள் அவருக்கு கொஞ்சம் சோதனையாக அமைந்ததை மறுக்க முடியாது. அப்படி ஒரு சந்தர்ப்பத்தில், அவரை தூக்கி நிறுத்திய படம் தான் ஏக்வீரா கிரியேஷன்ஸ் தயாரிப்பில் வெளிவந்த ‘காவலன்’. ‘ஃப்ரண்ட்ஸ்’ படத்தின் மூலம் விஜய்க்கு ஒரு சூப்பர்ஹிட் கொடுத்த சித்திக் மலையாளத்தில், தான் இயக்கிய ‘பாடிகார்ட்’ படத்தை, தமிழில் காவலனாக மாற்றினார். ஆக்ஷன் விஜய் இதில் அழகான காதலனாகவே மாறிப்போனார்.

அடுத்து வந்த ‘வேலாயுதம்’, ‘நண்பன்’ இரண்டு படங்களும் வெற்றிப்படங்கள் தான் என்றாலும் ‘போக்கிரி’க்குப் பிறகு அனைத்துப் பிரிவினரையும் கவர்ந்த படம் என்று ஏ.ஆர்.முருகதாஸின் இயக்கத்தில் வெளியான ‘துப்பாக்கி’யைத்தான் சொல்ல வேண்டும். தீவிரவாதிகளை வேரறுக்க விஜய் எடுக்கும் வித்தியாசமான ‘மூவ்’கள் விஜய்யை பிடிக்காதவர்களை கூட இந்தப் படத்தின் மூலம் விஜய்க்கு ரசிகர்களாக மாற்றியது. விஜய் சொல்கிற மாதிரி “வாழ்க்கை ஒரு வட்டம்.. இன்னைக்கு தோற்கிறவன் நாளைக்கு ஜெயிப்பான்” என்பது மாதிரி, ரொம்ப நாளாக பெரிய வெற்றிக்காக காத்திருந்து அதிரடியான ஹிட் ஒன்றை ‘துப்பாக்கி’ மூலம் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்.

திறமையாக டான்ஸ் ஆடும் தென்னிந்திய ஹீரோக்களில் விஜய் முக்கியமானவர் என்பதை மற்ற ஹீரோக்களின் ரசிகர்களும் ஒப்புக்கொள்வார்கள். முன்னணி நடிகராக திகழ்ந்தாலும் முன்னணி இயக்குனர்களின் படங்களில் விஜய் மிகக்குறைவாகவே நடித்திருக்கிறார். சமீபத்தில் வெளிவந்த ‘துப்பாக்கி’, ‘நண்பனை’ தவிர்த்துப் பார்த்தால் மணிரத்னம், பாலா, அமீர், செல்வராகவன், கௌதம் வாசுதேவ் மேனன் போன்ற தமிழ் சினிமாவின் முக்கியமான இயக்குநர்களின் படங்களில் இன்னும் நடிக்காமல் இருப்பது விஜய்யின் ரசிகர்களுக்கு ஒரு மனக்குறைதான்.

Vijay is affectionately addressed as Ilayathalapathyby his fans. After Superstar Rajinikanth, Vijay seems to grow younger by the day -he is the only star who has fans from the age of six to 60 years. The actor, who started his career as a child artist, debuted as hero in the 1992 flick, Naalaya Theerppu, at the age of 18 on December 4. He has come a long way since. His journey to superstardom has not been a bed of roses. But the actor's sheer hard work and perseverance, combined with a loyal fan base, which has been with him through thick and thin, has made him one of the top ranking stars of Kollywood.
Unlike his contemporaries,who started out playing chocolate boy characters, Vijay daringly began his career as an action hero in Naalaya Theerppu where he played a college student and proved his mettle.
