Illayathalapathy's next set in Madurai? DC
The success of Thuppakki is bringing together once again the romantic pair, Vijay and Kaajal Agarwal, in a movie titled, Jilla. According to reports that first appeared in DC, Ilayathalapathy is joining hands with debutant, Nesan, for the film which is beingproduced by R.B.Choudhary, known for some mem orable hitswith the star. An inside source revealed that the makers of the film who were contented with the onscreen chemistry of the siz zling pair Vijay and zling pair Vijay and Kaajal, especially in the songs equences, immediately approached the Magadheera girl. Sources close to Kaajal said that though she was busy with a couple of projects, including one in Bollywood, she was likely to adjust her dates for a Vijay pairing. There's yet another Malayalam superstar Mohan Lal who would be sharing screen space with the Velayudham actor. The grapevine has it that the film has a nativity theme and is set against the backdrop of Madurai. If this is true, then it is for the first time that Vijay will be seen in a rural role after having completed more than 50 films in K'town.

”இந்தியாவில் இந்தி பேசுற மக்கள் வாழும் மாநிலங்கள்தான் அதிகம். அதனால், இந்திப் படங்களான ‘கஜினி’, ‘தபாங்’ எல்லாம் 200 கோடியைத் தாண்டுறது சாதாரணம். ஆனா, தமிழ்ப் படமான ‘துப்பாக்கி’ 100 கோடி வசூலிச்சது பெரிய விஷயம்தான். சினிமா பார்க்கிற ரசிகர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை வளர்ந் துட்டே இருக்கு. அவங்க ரசனையும் வேற பிளாட்ஃபார்முக்கு மாறிடுச்சு. அதனால இனி ரசிகர்களின் ரசனைக்கு ஏத்த மாதிரி படம் கொடுக்க வேண்டிய கட்டாயம் எங்களுக்கு. அப்படி அவங்களை ரசிக்கவெச்சா, 100 கோடி என்ன… 200 கோடியைக்கூட அள்ளிக் கொடுப்பாங்க.”

”இப்போதைய ஹீரோக்களில் யாரை உங்களுக்குப் பிடிச்சிருக்கு?”

”ஒவ்வொரு ஹீரோவும் ஒவ்வொரு ஸ்டைல்ல மிரட்டுறாங்க. என்னைப் பொறுத்தவரை எல்லாருமே பெஸ்ட்தான்!”

”சரி… அப்போ, இப்போ சினிமாவில் உங்களுக்குப் போட்டி யார்?”

”வேற யாரு… விஜய்தான்!”

”உங்களைப் பத்தி இணையத்தில் வரும் நெகட்டிவ் விமர்சனங்களை எப்படி எடுத்துக்குவீங்க?”

”ஜாலியான கமென்ட்ஸை எல்லாரையும் போல நானும் ரொம்பவே ரசிக்கிறேன். கடுமையான விமர்சனங்களில் இருக்கும் நியாயத்தை மட்டும் கவனிச்சு, என் அடுத்தடுத்த படங்களில் திருத்திக்கிறேன். பொதுவா, எல்லா ஹீரோக்களைப் பத்தியும்தான் சோஷியல் நெட்வொர்க்களில் கமென்ட் பண்றாங்க. ஆனா, தனிப்பட்ட பெர்சனல் தாக்குதலா, அவங்க மனசைப் புண்படுத்துறது மட்டுமே நோக்கமா இருக்கும் விமர்சனங்கள்தான் நிறைய இருக்கு. அப்படியான விமர்சனங்களை நான் கண்டுக்கவே மாட்டேன்.”

”தாய்மொழி தமிழ் மாதிரி, என்னோட இயல்பு மௌனம். எனக்குத் தெரிஞ்சு நிறையப் பேர் வார்த்தையைவிட்டு வாழ்க்கையைத் தொலைச்சு இருக்காங்க. வார்த்தை தடுக்கினால் வாழ்க்கை தடுக்கிடும்கிற உண்மை உணர்ந்தவன் நான். அதான் மௌனமா இருக் கேன்!”

”யார் இயக்கத்தில் நடிக்க ஆசை?”

”இதுவரை நான் நடிச்ச படங்கள் எதுவுமே பெரிய திட்டமிடல்கள் இல்லாமத்தான் நடந்துச்சு. ஆனா, இனி ஒவ்வொரு படத்தையும் அழகா, அம்சமா டிசைன் பண்ணணும்னு நினைச்சிருக்கேன். பாலா, அமீர்… இவங்க ரெண்டு பேரோட ஒவ்வொரு படத்தையும் பார்த்து அசந்துபோயிருக்கேன். அவங்க படங்களில் நடிக்க ஆசையா இருக்கு. சீக்கிரமே நடிப்பேன்.”

”குடும்ப வாழ்க்கை எப்படி இருக்கு?”

He has now been honored for his show in these two films with the Cosmopolitan People’s Choice Award 2013 for Best Actor in Tamil. Kajal Aggarwal was selected as the Best Actress in Tamil for her performance in Thuppakki.

There is a rumour going on in Kollywood that Vijay has stepped in Rajinikanth’s place for the film that KV Anand is to direct. The director had a script ready for Rajinikanth and AGS Entertainment has decided to produce this venture.

However, the buzz now is that Rajini may not be able to allot dates for this project and the filmmakers are eyeing Ilayathalapathy Vijay for the role.

Looks like the director will be making some changes in the script to suit Vijay.

The trend of boxoffice collectionscrossing `100 crore started as early as Aamir's Ghajini, and later,films like Dabangg, 3 Idiots, Rowdy Rathore and Ready followed. Now with Ilayathalapathy Vijay's film Thuppakki, which touched the 100-day mark last Wednesday, joining the `Elite 100 crore club', anew trend has commenced in K'town. Apparently, Vijay becomes the second Mass appeal hero after Superstar Rajinikanth who has registered his name in the 100crore club. Vijay, the hot hunk of K'town, who is shooting in Mumbai for his upcoming film, Thalaivaa, speaks to DC in an exclusive about his new achievement and future films.
ACHIEVING 100 CRORE MARK: It's heartwarming. I should thank the whole team. Perhaps it was possible because of a change in release pattern and size, the multiplex boom, youth throngingto theatres, huge marketing efforts that have contributed to this new trend.
THE SUPERSTAR THRONE AND `NUMERO UNO' FACTOR: I don't really understand much about numbers, but my distributors kept updating me about the collections at the box office which they said crossed the markin three weeks itself. Having taken this giant leap, thanks to my fans and A.R. Murugadoss, I will strive for greater heights.
RESPONSIBILITIE S RISE: Post Thuppakki's huge success, people's expectations are also massive. It gives me a sense of responsibility to achieve more in the future.
ON THALAIVAA: `My fans are my thalaivargal' (says with all modesty) . Well, as misconstrued by many, the film has nothing to do with politics. Neither do I leadany group in it! When you watch the film, you will know the title isjustified. Even as I was in the finalleg of Thuppakki, I listened to thescript of Vijay's Thalaivaa. It's a new genre for both of us. The way he takes his films are very different and interesting. Nirav Shah is the biggest plus to the movie. He creates a new mood for each and every scene. He is simply awesome! The movie is shaping up extremely well.
ON OPTING FOR A DEBUTANT DIRECTOR FOR JILLA: If you look at my career, you will know that debutant directors had a major part to play in my successes. Rarely, I was fortunate enough toget movies from big filmmakers like Fazil sir, Shankar sir and Murugadoss. It is ultimately the script that really warrants a director. Leading production house and Tamil cinema’s biggest overseas distributors Ayngaran International will be producing the film.When contacted AR Murgadoss said: “After completing the Hindi remake ofThuppakki with Akshay Kumar, there are plans to do another film with Vijay. The media has been abuzz with news that the Thuppakki combo of Vijay and director A.R.Murugadoss is joining hands again for a project. Murugadoss has now confirmed this bit in a recent statement by saying that he and Vijay had even discussed about their future project. This won’t be Thuppakki 2 as widely expected by fans, but a different project about which other details have to be worked out in the coming months.

Vijay is currently busy with Thalaivaa and Jilla after that, while Murugadoss is occupied with the Hindi remake of Thuppakki featuring Akshay Kumar and supposedly titled Pistol.

Vijay's youthful looks at 38 are hard to miss, especially after having been in the film industry for more than two decades. He replies even before one can complete the question! “My wife Geetha (his short form for Sangeetha) keeps me happy . As an actor I have to be away from home sometimes for months together. “Absolutely not! I am happy where I am. It was just a cameo appearance for my friend Prabhu Deva. I was shooting in Mumbai for Thuppakki when Prabhu Deva made a surprise visit to my sets. He didn't say anything but just invited me to the adjoining set where he was canning a song with Akshay . He wanted me to shake a leg with him. That's how it happened. It was fun and we had a rocking time.“
It's hard not to ask him who he thinks was his most sizzling on-screen jodi: he avoids replying. All he will say is that earlier audiences thought it was Simran.
If given an option to change his career Vijay says he would stick to cinema, maybe as a producer, “but definitely not as a director,“ he says. “It's a major responsibility which I don't want to take right now.“

Where does he see himself in the next ten years. “I will be President of America,“ he remarks, lightheartedly.

Reminiscing about `puppy love' he thinks for a while and blushes and brushes it off, “I can't really think of any .“

He regards time as the most valuable thing in his life. “The best thing you could ever give to someone is your valuable time -because you are giv ing something that you never get back,“ he says.
His favourite hangout spot is undoubtedly `home sweet home'. “I like only house parties or in friends' places if not in my own house. I feel , more at ease and cosy when I am at shome or in the houses of close pals.“
The West Coast of America is his preferred holiday destination. “Given I a long break from work, I would pack off to the Pacific Coast.“

Vijay keen on Baadshah remake

Tamil star Vijay is known for his Telugu movie remakes. He has scored a number of hits in Tamil with such remakes and as per the buzz, he is now expressing a keen interest on acquiring the remake rights of Young Tiger NTR’s ‘Baadshah’. The film has been generating a tremendous buzz with its pre-release talk and Vijay has approached Producer Bandla Ganesh through PVP pictures. Discussions are at an advanced stage.
The movie is expected to be a comedy entertainer and Sreenu Vaitla has directed it. Kajal Aggarwal will be seen as the heroine in the film and Suhasini will be seen as NTR’s mother. Navdeep will be seen in a negative role.
Music has been composed by Thaman. The film is gearing up for a massive release on April 5th.

Ilayathalapthy Vijay may be busy shooting for his films but he still makes time for social causes and charities. And in between his work schedule, he also ensures he spends time with his family. TOI caught up with Vijay for its fifth anniversary issue and chatted about his days as a youngster in the city, his family and more...

How are you as a father?

I am like a friend to my kids. My wife, Sangeeta, handles their studies, etc. My son, Sanjay, and I discuss a lot of things - like he gives me feedback on my films and what his friends say at school. In fact, I always test out my movie songs on him. If he likes a song, then I know for sure it'll be a hit. He loved Google Google... and I knew it would do well. (Smiles) My daughter, Saasha, also watches my films and tells me if she likes them or not.

I heard you hated school and refused to go... and that you were a big Michael Jackson fan so you focused on dancing...

Well, I wasn't interested in studies. (Laughs) Yes, I liked Michael Jackson and used to practice his steps. I enjoy dancing!

And what about college? You dropped out to get into films and your parents weren't happy...

I wanted to get into films and my parents were against it. I convinced my mom and finally she convinced my dad. My dad then felt who best to launch his son than him? So he launched me and here I am.

If Sanjay wanted to become an actor, would you allow him to drop out?

No! I'd tell him that education is important so he must complete college before he gets into his career. I would like my kids to study well. But Sanjay's interests keep changing every month (like any kid) - he recently said he wanted to become a cricketer so I have organized a coach and take him to cricket matches. So we'll have to wait and watch.

Suriya and you were batchmates in Loyola College though in different courses and now colleagues. Were you friends then?

Yes, Suriya was doing B.Com. and I was doing my Vis Com. We used to hang out with our friends in the parking lot and generally catch up there. Then I left college to enter films. We are friends even today, not just then. My closest friends today are, in fact, my friends from college.

Some of the films you have done (like Sura) have been extensively criticized...

(Laughs) Yes, some of the choices were perhaps not right but it's all part of the film business.

How do you feel after joining the Rs 100 crore club? Is there more pressure on you now?

As I told you earlier, I don't understand these figures and numbers. I am happy that Thuppakki hit the Rs 100 crore mark and I hope more Tamil films in future cross that figure. As for pressure, there's always the desire to give my best to every film - after all, so many people put in so much of hard work.

How important is the work you do for social causes and charities?

It's very important and close to me. It brings me a lot of satisfaction to help people in whatever way I can. I am happy to do it.

A school dropout takes up a part-time job to kick-start an accounting career

Pudhiya Geethai (New Gospel, Tamil, 2003) Directed by newcomer Jagan, it tells the story of a young man with a never-say-die attitude. The movie flopped, but changed at least one life.

After completing his 12th board exams, David Raj had no choice but to stop studying as his parents couldn’t pay his fees any more. His dream of becoming a film maker lay shattered.

The Hebbal resident was drifting aimlessly till he watched Pudhiya Geethai in May, 2003. “I had just finished my exams, and I had been to watch the movie to loosen up a bit from the problems that I was facing. But the movie transformed me once and for all,” Raj says.

The hero of Pudhiya Geethai is an optimist, and inspires people around him to strive against heavy odds. Inspired by the actor selling newspapers to pay his school fees, Raj started looking around for a part-time job. He found one with Just Dial, the phone yellow-pages company. At the end of the first summer, he had Rs 13,500 in hand. With the money, he decided to pursue a BCom from BEL College in Hebbal. He paid Rs 8,500 towards his fees, and kept the rest of the money for other expenses.

Raj’s father works as a gardener with Bescom, and his mother is a homemaker, so he couldn’t expect much help from them. He decided to work at Just Dial every summer for three years. By the end of the vacation, he would have enough money for the next academic year. This way, he successfully graduated from BEL College.

“The character’s positive attitude made me realise that education is important. Even now, whenever I feel down and out, I put on a CD and watch Pudhiya Geethai to get my positive energy back,” says Raj.

After his graduation, Raj found an accountant’s job with Tesco, and worked at its Whitefield office for four years. The pay was good, and the corporate job could have taken him places, but his heart was more in media than in numbers.

Teaming up with friends in advertising, Raj has produced 12 corporate films over the last four years. His clients include Cloud Nine Bytes and Wipro. He has now quit Tesco to do an MS in Communications at St Joseph’s College. “I saved up to join this course. I’m the most educated person in my family,” Raj told Talk.

Raj is all set to start his own production company, and plans to call it Emotions Factory. “I want to earn while I study,” he says.

Since actor Vijay has converted all his fan clubs into social service organisations, Raj is involved in service activities all round the year. He hasn’t met Vijay yet, but says he will surely meet him some day.

After the success of his song, Google Google…, from Thuppakki, Ilayathalapathy Vijay faces a unique problem. All the music composers of his films want him to sing at least one number in their albums, as that, they think, will instantly connect with his fans and the masses. While Vijay has crooned the Vaanganna Vanakkanganna… track for his upcoming Vijay directed film Thalaivaa, which has music by GV Prakash, the latest buzz is that composer Imman is planning to record a song with the actor for his Jilla, which is currently being shot in Chennai. When Chennai Times spoke to Imman, he said, “We’ve not finalized anything but yes, we do wish to make Vijay sing a number for Jilla.” Interestingly, the two had teamed up for Thamizhan way back in 2002, and the actor had sung a number in that film. And that’s not all— for Vijay’s next film with director Murugadoss, Kolaveri composer Anirudh might also get him to croon a number. Veteran director P. Vasu who has tasted nation-wide success is now reportedly setting his targets on a more global scale. The director who has given number of hit films in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada is now apparently working towards his Hollywood debut. The full length English feature film is reportedly titled Curry In Love.
While P. Vasu’s move comes as a pleasant surprise, sources are suggesting that the director may be in touch with Ilayathalapathy Vijay to play the lead in the movie. Also, the word is that the director is interested in casting Sonam Kapoor as the leading lady. An official confirmation from P. Vasu is awaited in this regard.

Days and months may pass into years, and many of them may pass one after another, but age is all but a mere number. We have a testimony of this dictum, our dear Ilayathalapathy. Vijay, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in Visual Communication, had to fighthis parents in order to become an actor by profession, while his family wanted to see him as a doctor.
Interestingly, Vijay was classmates with Yuvan Shankar Raja, Karthik Raja, actor Suirya and director Vishnuvardhan, at college. For the records, though 'Naalaya Theerpu', directed by his father, SA Chandrasekhar, was his debut in the tinsel town, his real launch happened only in director Vikraman's'Poove Unakkaga'. Vijay rose up to the status of 'Ilayathalapathy', out ofhis arresting charisma, and ageless looks and vigour. Having had established himself as a pillar in the Kollywood Hall of Fame, Vijayhas given a number of trendsetting movie.
An actor who is always very particular and choosy about his scripts, however faced a slump in his career for about a couple of years, with his films not making it big at the box office. Nonetheless, his comeback was phenomenal, and has ensured that his fan base is intact, irrespective of how his movies perform at the box office. Apart from being a legendary actor, Vijay is also a humble and benevolent individual, who actively contributes to charitable events and fund raisers. Currently with a couple of movies in his mind, and 'Thalaivaa' close to release, Vijayis one of the best actors that the cinema has seen. Today, he is counting one more year in his career. Vijay celebrated his birthday with the audio launch of his next release Thalaivaa on Friday night. It was a very glitzy affair.
Vijay is currently riding a tidal wave of success at the box-office. His last release the AR Murgadoss directed Thupakki is said to be the first Tamil film that grossed over Rs 100 Crore from theatrical collections worldwide.
The actor has a huge reach across the major Tamil markets and is today at the pinnacle of his career. Vijay’s immediate line-up is also impressive.
Thalaivaa is scheduled to release in August. The star is currently working on Jilla,where he has Mohanlal as his co-star. It will be followed by a film with hit director AR Murgadoss.
