Song: Kandangi
Movie: Jilla
Singers: Vijay, Shreya Ghoshal & Chorus
Music: D. Immaan
After hearing the song for the 1st time, I keep humming it a lot. This song is perfect in many ways. Vijay singing melody. Shreya Ghoshal in her usual best. The chorus sets the right mood the song. D. Immaans orchestration is really super, his strength is melody songs with tamil folk music rhythms.
Veeram songs might be mass, but Jilla songs are 1st class!!

Movie: Thirumanam Ennum Nikkaah (TEN)
Singers: Shadab Faridi, Chinmayi
Music: M. Ghibran
All songs from TEN are great, M. Ghibran done wonderful job with the composition. I Am very hooked to this song form the movie. The piano interlude, the african choir, electric bass, powerful beat. The song has same raaga as Pookkal from Madrasipattinam.
MERRY XMAS, ENJOY THE MUSIC.

A masterpiece from Ghibran from TEN. Melodies doesnt have to be dull to be good. The song is peppy and well composed to keep you listening throughout the song. I have higher expectations to Vishwaroopam 2 songs after listening a lot to TEN songs.

I would say its a part of the narrative. Set in the 80's and the given ambiance, this piece from "Asai 100vagai" adds in the needed value and the naughty charm to the picture in the dirtiest way possible. In Vidiyum Mun, they have used R.D Burman's song "Duniya Mein Logon Ko" from the movie Apna Desh. Again, the film maker has thought that this song would justify the cause & effect during the search carried out by a pimp whose life is gets tossed when one of the sex worker goes missing. In both cases, not only the mood is put into place but the intention of the song is more appropriate for the situation. Asai100vagai talks about women and the choices/options men have towards them. That's exactly what Miss Lovely is all about - exploitation of women (normally known as B-grade or C-grade films. Exploitation films have their own genres too). And "Duniya Mein Logon Ko" talks about deception which suits well the search of the pimp whose over belief with the sex worker runs him down into a fatal circumstance.
Coming back to Asai100vagai, RGV tried it and had an Epic Fail! Look for "Dan Dan Cheeni" song from the movie Department.

Simply in love with this movie, sad that its not original, but what a beauty. The virtual backlot and the entire post production work can be considered as a land mark in TFI. The above song comes as a part of the narration. Would like to see some stand alone visuals for this song. Plus, "Vidiyaadha Iravu" is one of the courageous songs and along with the situation its just fabulous, gives kind of Epic feeling to an epic decision. And then you have Rage and Redemption as separate pieces - absolutely stunning.
I recommend hearing to the song in a dark ambiance and let yourself blown away with the sound. The movie itself should be experienced in a light-less environment (big screen) without any disturbance to get the full benefit.

A good song but he copied Semmeena Vinmeena from Aanandha Pongatre in saranam. But I will try to accept it since two of my favourite singers are singing superb in the song.
PS. Playtime was interesting, tune was ok but the beat was a bit confusing especially with echo effects, as usual ending part was super.

Cuckoo - The charming sound from an invisible source that ignites love and fills the heart.
Aptly titled to narrate the romance among visually impaired people, Cuckoo OST is a journey to its nest. Each song is a selected straw from the melodious song bird's home. Santosh Narayanan once again strikes the exact chords which not only doses the faint hearts, but also makes the brave ones faint. The charm of music is caught using multiple instruments producing some unique sounds which helps this travel possible. The album has my favorite combo - Gana Bala & Santosh. Anthony Dasan's (the performer along with GanaBala in Kasu Panam from Soodhu Kavvum), Anthony Dasan's amazing style is well captured with the beats that again reminds us the gathering of visually impaired friends. The lyrics are written through the visuals from the minds eyes where certainly the materials that meet the regular eyes are omitted and only the words that union with the heart are registered. The songs prove yet another time that dream is a vision too.

Splendid melody song composed by P.R Srinath. The raaga is quite familiar. This is the trend today lots of new composers trying to make a foothold into cinefield. The more MDs they introduce the harder it will be for any one to etablish themselves.

Jigarthanda Songs
Composed by Santhosh Narayanan
Lyrics by Muthamizh, Antony Dasan, Pradeep Kumar
Singers : Rita, Meenakshi Iyer, Pradeep Kumar, Sean Roldan, Anthony Dasan & Santhosh Narayanan
Label: Think Music
Here is the order of my song preference :
1.a. Baby – Singers: Santhosh Narayanan
Lyrics: Muthamil
Highlights : Brings back the 60's-70's Pop music, accents (loudly played notes), bar pattern (counts)
- Thevaigalai Theediye Kalgal Chellum !
1.b Kannamma – Singers: Rita, Anthony Dasan
Lyrics: Muthamil
Highlights : Mallets
- Sokkikichu ... Sikkikichi !
1.c Pandi Naatu Kodi – Singers: Anthony Dasan
Lyrics: Anthony Dasan
Highlights : Finely tuned snare drums & well used beater
- En Perai Sonna Puzhudi Parakum Paru !
1.d. Jigar – Singers: Pradeep Kumar
Lyrics: Pradeep Kumar
Highlights : "woofing" brass drums, enhanced strokes technique
- They may announce a contest to pen suitable lyrics for "Jigar" to win free tickets and watch the film with the team FDFS.
1.e Ding Dong – Rap (English): Mose
Rap (Tamil): Arun Raja
Highlights - vocals and articulation resembling Vinu Chakravarthi, jovial mood, cross-stick, the guy who was on the bass pedals needs a special applause
- Rap
- En meethu ingu kovam por thoduka !
2. Dhesayum Ezhandheney – Singers: Meenakshi Iyer, Santhosh Narayanan
Lyrics: Pradeep Kumar
Highlight - sounds like the extended version of "Kodaiyila" from Cuckoo, wonderful vocal
- Asaiyum en usurum enathillai !
Instrumental & Choir - Non-Categorised
Thanda – Instrumental
Highlights : Rock drumming
Hoo Haa – Singers: Sean Roldan, Santhosh Narayanan
Highlights : Maracas
Ottam – Performed by Santy’s Jazz Band
Highlights : Cymbal
So you see if there is so much vareity just using a Drum kit, imagine what Santosh has done with the string and wind instruments along with the vocals. This guy is typical old-shool (that's what I like about him); examining, experienting and taking time to generate the desired music that not only suits the melody but are quite appealing. The beauty is how he has recorded these pieces - hearing on a well balanced audio system, each sound sticks to importance. He registers them keeping in mind to capture each sound and assembling them together without showing any partiality. His forte is in fluently traveling thru genres like pop, Jazz, coutry blues and rock-n-roll.
Again, you can certainly note the difference in hearing experience when its played on a CD and not MP3.

this has been my fav song for almost a year now.

For those of you who haven't read James Vasanthan's status https://www.facebook.com/james.vasanthan.14/posts/10202879626247829?stream_ref=10
My take
I'm satisfied with what he wrote, the inspirational issue was bugging me for some time. It's great that a celebrity like James brought this into the limelight. There are SOME new kids on the block as well SOME *music directors (*Haven't got their due, hence trying to revamp their career by taking inspiration from veterans) who are prone to falling into a black hole.
We all need inspiration and the number of inspiring stepping stones of creativity will always be ambiguous. I love some of the material being churned out by new composers but it doesn't take time for my consciousness to start nitpicking portions that remind of other songs or composers. This aspect is beyond my control and once this occurs, I put them in my imaginary, "Don't Play Again Bucket" and sadly majority of the songs these days fall into this category.
I'm not the type to revisit Old Songs for the sake of getting pleasure and I'm constantly listening to and updating myself with the latest songs and this year has been the weakest year for me to enjoy even a handful songs. This can be a result of: my taste taking a toll on me or my approach to songs is becoming VERY VERY selective.
One thing is for sure that songs that impact me straight away are likely to gain an immortality stamp from me as my motto has always been, a good song is one which shakes hands with your heart at the initial meeting and never breaks this friendship.
Believe it or not, the arrival of a talented and consistent music director has already happened. But I'm doubtful as to whether they will catch up with Rahman Ji to take his baton or will Rahman Ji keep lapping them. I would like to think the former is true as new styles of music will always keep listeners on edge but currently I'm living with false hope. Sad Times :'(

I dont know why GVP and Saindhavi duets end up like this, another catchy melodious song. Rhythm has a tribal feel to it. Music starts with a piano bit which gets better when the flute sound blends in. I would rank it like one of the best melodies of 2014 so far.

Arvind Ji :), The tuba staccato part was reethigowla (RG). The bass clarinet in the beginning was Abheri. The rest is pretty much an overall experiment with Kharaharapriya. The beauty of parent ragas definitely lies in their fluid nature, you can play around with them to suit your taste. Ever since Kangal Irangal, my love for exploring RG based compositions has grown exponentially. With the All Ragas of Rahman thread (http://www.mayyam.com/talk/showthread.php?9703-All-Ragas-of-Rahman) I have been able to appreciate Rahman Ji a lot more. Kismat Se from Pukar opened doors for my love for (Bhimpalas/Abheri). The evergreen song Malarnthum Malaratha boosted me to experiment with Abheri. My fav. Hindi Songs in Abheri are Aa Neele Gagan Tale Pyar Hum Karey - Badshah and Kuchh Dil Ne Kaha - Anupama both linked by Hemant Da.
Thanks for sharing those compositions by Raaja Saab.
Sorry, but IMO when it comes to Kharaharapriya the song that stands the tallest without a doubt is Sharreth's mighty impressive life changing composition, Sandhikkatha Kangalil from 180. The way I still unintentionally find nuances out of this one gets me charged every time!

I vehemently deny your framed/agenda driven opinion. Your way of comparison is silly and it looks like you have no idea how to participate in this conversation with a healthy manner. I don't need to provide here statical data on how many times AnnakkiLi songs get aired on day to day basis with in TN. I least bother about it. First try to compare different music patterns without factors like "How many hits in Youtube", "How many sales in iTune" blah blah. Its all about how one gets connected to the world of moments through a music and how it enriches the taste buds of your heart. This is not a Vijay Tv Super Singer program where we need to declare who is the winner at the end of the season. Its about how we look each MD's music ( their amount of work, area of strength, depth of knowledge, pushing the envelopes, enlightening consistently the inner soul of one highly talented in music field and also a layman like me etc )

I have seen many fans discuss and compare IR and ARR and fight for who is superior. But to me the MSV-TKR or MSV music has produced the finest compositions and orchestration which no MD's can ever imagine to reach. Some of the albums like Aayirathi oruvan, Padagotti, Bagyalakshmi, Kulandaiyum deivamum, Karpagam, Karnan, bale panda, all pas... series movies of Bheemsingh, and numerous albums(of mgr, sivaji, KB's, Sridhar's, ),etc, in which all the songs are massive hits. The reach these songs had is unmatched in TFM. MSV was the trendsetter for 70's ,80's and most 90's songs with his numerous compositions with SPB, KJY, Jayachandran, VJ, SJ, etc which was followed by many MD's. My voicing here is to highlight to the fans here who are unaware or ignorant of the great achievements of the MD's prior to IR and ARR.

Kakkai-ku thaan Kunji Pon Kunji
What if MSV is supperior to IR and IR is the ultimate maestro > AR and AR > all living legends. You see it contradicts itself. So the point is not how they over ride each other in an individual likeness scale, but actually who they are. Comparisons in Music World is a sort of a Study, for that its the basic study of Art when knowledge is driven by informations and not a war thru knowledge.
I have been following Sunil's works. I have also played 2 of his pieces to my assosiates in music. Knowing a little bit western notes, I am learning the Raga structures for the past 3 months. Basically what we should be interested in is the inspiration of an artist. Sunil is a creator, and he gets inspired by various materials. It should not be shocking if he followed Srikanth Deva, but should be interesting to know how he explains it as a whole piece of HIS Original Work. Myself being an adrent IR Fan & having heard almost 99% of his music works, but while I was going thru the book recomended by RR, a particular Raga made me think of AR music only. Is it a crime ?
What Sunil recomends us to hear is a piece he had worked upon after analysing and reading certain sound and its structure. While doing so he had came across samples for comparison and according to his beleif in Music, he found one piece supperior to another. That in anyway does not point to any MD in particualar, does it ?
Vennikram asks a basic question, to which I feel Sunil is subjected to reply, and I am sure he wishes to. Thats what we have to hear from him. And I have always supported the view projected by Venkkiram on Hit Wars. Well, if thats the change anticipated for this generation of Music Fans, I certainly don't want to be a part of that change.
Sunil, please, if you reply in PM, add me in copy. I am very much interested to know the global aspect of your works. Once I even thought of asking you to explain a bit more your work, then backed off thinking how you would take it. But be assured that, even if I don't comment, I follow your page and youtube links, carefully going thru your comments and the comments sections. All the very best to you.

Echoes my thought. Being a carnatic vocalist myself, it is incredibly difficult for me to not ignore a good musical piece even if it comes from a music director who's not normally associated with good music or it's supposedly been inspired or copied from an earlier MDs work. I have always had various friends of mine coming up to me and saying-" antha paattula appidi enna ezhavu daa irukku....Appidye intha paattulerndhu surittaanga..En athayae kettu paadikitrukka." The genesis from where the song originated isn't actually important for me, but the the way its been structured is. A recent example would be- Mujh Mein Tu from Special Chabbis, Kanimozhiye from Irandam Ulagam, Iravugalil from Ponmaalai Pozhudhu...

Arvind Srinivasan - "Next time try Graha Bedam with Karaharapriya....Should be very intriguing considering the possibilites."
I would be happy to fulfil your request
@venkkiram
Sir, my checklist of artists being on the same pedestal is different to yours and there's no unidimensional aspect related to my analysis of both veterans. Respectfully, both are worlds apart but both have affected me in a near enough manner each with their share of pros. To make it brief, (mappi plz take note) IR & ARR have fans both counteracting each other at every step, what does that say about their fan ratio. Ultimately you have to consider, their input to tfm, yes ARR is more widely accepted throughout India and internationally but nevertheless it is both of their respective material that has turned them from having fans to having devotees. In TFM only excluding 1 or 2 others there isn't a huge deal of composers who have been consistent except these two which speaks volumes of their impact. You can decide whether IR is past his peak, but if you ignore these factors then on a personal level I can say I haven't been continuously emtionally enthralled by other composers. When I didn't know much about them or tamil music and came across a random individual song by both of them, I had never been affected by music like that before and in that respect when I heard my first sharreth song from Pulliman I then too was very emotional literally crying. IR and ARR broke language barriers for me, sharreth made me dig deep into Malayalam songs. IR, ARR and now sharreth have always added layers for appeal and not for the sake, they have pushed innovation to new heights and are still doing so despite their duration in the industry. I hope I've answered you question.
@nov-that was uncalled for
Nov, when cross examining Roja and Annakili, you have to bear in mind which generation you are talking too but Yes, IR fans will find your comment provocative and there are people from my age range who r more into IR than ARR which shouldn't be a surprise, should it? I guess that was a wind up on your part lol bit funny really coming from a mod. No offence Nov but certain members who were in the corner of the hub departed and they still blame u but I admit some of them were deluded though and needed to go so thanks regardless of your approach. Conversely, I thank LM who has been more civil and had squashed many arguments from day one
@ravi200101 whenever I have time I do visit pre IR artists and most times it ends up being a learning curve but then again that period was very pure South Indian/heavy ragas galore and now because of wider tastes/ musical genres/generation gaps people want to move with time. I mentioned in my blog, why Arr/IR doesn't have competition highlighting the fact that music directors should see composing as a passion and not competition hence their love for music is evident via their exploration of melody, structure and arrangements. There are composers who plagiarise but it's their delivery and alteration that gives them that edge over short shelf-life composers who become mds and waste their opportunity by being damp squibs after one or two hits.
@mappi thank you for understating me, and as a matter of fact I'm glad your mentioned Srikanth deva because there are half a dozen songs by him which I hold in high esteem.
As a concluding note, this year started as a sore thumb but within the last 2months there has been a new composer debuting every other week. Whether they become successfully or not, I appreciate the note they have started on ie exploring new in avenues in film music music and projecting them with greats traits.

So an IR hater has the audacity to call his opinion a fact. What more. He wants us to accept it. Very respectful to others opinions, I see. But as long as they make it more evident that they are in 'desperate' territory, we are on the right track.
By the way 20 years old album sounds fresher than a 40 years old album. Shock. Horror.
Minnale sounds fresher to me. HJ zindabad.

Saw two songs from Megha - Kalvane and Putham Pudhu kaalai. I don't have much to say about the 2nd one. The girl looks cute and the picturization made me opt for repeat viewing. IR has not gone for a remix but used the same instruments as the original melody with probably some minor changes. To suit the simple music, the song is shown to be played by a light music troupe in a wedding. Well pictured but somehow doesn't sync well.
Unfortunately, listening to 'Kalvane' made me feel yet again that IR MUST retire. Sorry, but nowadays his music is disappointing, to say the least. I was not impressed with any of the songs in NEPV. And now this Kalvane sounds very much like a nursery rhyme, very similar to his post-2005 songs. Far far away from Melody/Variety/wide range, for which IR is known for. I don't have much knowledge on music but all I can say is he is not a patch on what he was, a decade back.
//சரணத்தில் ஒரே மேகக் கூட்டத்தில் நிற்காமல் வெவ்வேறு மேகக் கூட்டங்களுக்கு தாவித் தாவி செல்லும்//
Few things which made IR's songs reach the common man faster were - The Pallavi and Charanam were so closely connected that at the end of Pallavi, your start humming the charanam spontaneously. But I don't find this connect in his new songs. I'm not surprised to see your praises here as I've been reading many other user comments too. Many, like you have analyzed, dissected his compositions in detail, describing the way they feel when listening to each of his recent songs. I just feel kind of jealous that I am not able to enjoy it as much as you do. Good that his improvisations are satisfying an elite crowd and has gone one (or more) steps forward. I wonder if there are more people like me who are left behind.

Hattori Hanzo,
That was an honest reply that I had come across in a while, hats off and thanks for speaking your heart. Completely respect your frank opinion, but would like to put forward an aspect that was not discussed here or atleast I have not come across :
The Character in Music
Knowing that you are a listener, let me not go technical (even if I try, my knowledge is so limited compared to certain people here). Basically, any music is split into 2 divisions - 1. feeling 2. Sounds. In most cases people talk much about the sounds - its quality, loudness, notes, tempo, beats ... etc. Those are the major structure of a whole productive song or musical piece. But the same musical piece essayed by someone else does not give the same impact, meaning the feeling. Here is where the Character part comes into play and its at plenty in IR's every work.
Not announcing any other MD's here (you see fans are those who are sitting on field mines, and small opinion can trip it on), so the color of music was changed by certain MDs, where the sounds were experimented but it lost the character. When you play an instrument or hum a verse, it can be in sync with a perfect note, but the soul will be missing. It has to be generated, thats what IR does. Even his beats have a character. Its not just creating a melody, it is like creating it so that you can feel it.
I always had a great respect to Music, found it quite devine and a vechile which takes me to wonderful places. I am sure IR is wroking a lot on the breathing rythm of the listeners and creates his notes. While playing them he adjusts the loudness/tempo/etc., of the instruments played, so that it is well in sync with the respiratory system. So while listening to his work, without your knowledge you become a part of his orchestra, using just your wind pipe. You can see it on babies, they just fall asleep while listening to a IR song, I have seen it.
I am not talking as a Fan of IR, just pointing to you one of the IR aspects. I can go one, but time and space are the limits. Megha songs are mesmericing, if you accept to invite the character the music holds.
Take a deep breathe, play this song, and just allow it to guide you - the beats and hums will take care of the rest.

As usual, very detailed reply mappi.
//you see fans are those who are sitting on field mines, and small opinion can trip it on//
Very true. Its like stepping on a landmine. Seeing my post, some would think I am a fan of ARR, HJ or any other MD. But till today, IR is the only MD who has been consistently entertaining me. Can't even imagine any other MD with a repertoire of songs ranging Salangai Oli to Poda Poda Punnaaku. Watching a youtube playlist that includes gems like 'Aayiram Malargale', 'Oh Vasantha Raja', 'Eeramana Rojave' while typing this message.
//Even his beats have a character. Its not just creating a melody, it is like creating it so that you can feel it.
Very well said. I have this feeling when listening to many many 80s and early 90s songs of IR. I understand that he has moved away from just giving a simple melody to please the common man instantly TO experimenting and making use of the advanced knowledge he has gained in music. Maybe for his stature, using the instruments, musical pattern, ragas used in 80s and 90s will be like bowing down to pressure of fans like me.
Btw, Mughilo Meghamo is closer to earlier works. Good one.

Ennakul Oruvan Songs (2014 : Tamil : Variety)
Composer/Music Director Santosh Narayanan
Just in a gap of couple of weeks from Jigarthanda OST Release, Think Music gives us yet another interesting Tamil movie music album 'Ennakul Oruvan'. Santhosh Narayanan, who took great care of the Background Score for the Kanada Original, strikes the exact premises of the movie theme through songs for its tamil version. I did say that we can talk about 'Lucia' once 'Ennakul Oruvan' releases, but I have to highlight the BGM score from the Kanada movie so that you can be assured for the some fabulous music in its adaptaion too : Lucia has grey parts and the colored ones for the two characters that occupy the most part of the film and Santosh produced the same difference in the audio that the visuals provided.
Poo Avizhum Pozhudhil
A 'Santhosh-Style' melody leaning brightly over the acoustics. Lyricist Vivek has put the exact needed words to the tune, he says - "Thegam Megam Agum Orr Nilaiye" - Lucia pills can do that to you (LoL). Keba Jeremiah on the acoutic Guitar, the guitarist who features in 'O Crazy Minnale' song with Andrea - a very good work. Singer Pradeep goes deep into the tune and pitches back quite gracefully. The astonishing part is the 'Whistling' by Santosh himself, which give more opening to the verses that follow and gets included in the stunning closing of the song. The most important aspect of the song is Santosh Crediting Sean Roldan for the Ukelele instrument piece. The instrumental follows the song during prime moments and takes a swing just before the song ends (@3m20-3m25s), absolutely brilliant. The (similar) piece is from Sean Roldan 'Mayakura Poovasam', thus he gets credited by Santosh and for those who missed this amazing song, You can listen it from here : Mayakura Poovasam (http://www.mayyam.com/talk/showthread.php?9923-Song-of-the-Open-Road-(Latest-song-heard-Part-10)&p=1114780&viewfull=1#post1114780).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7DFE5ipiRs
Endi Ippadi
After 'Baby' from Jigarthanda, Santosh amuses himself and us by singing "Endi Ippadi Ennaku Un Mela Kirukku" penned by Ganesh Kumar (Still trying to find more about the lyricist - asked before, requesting info again). Just missing Gana Bala / Anthony Dasan - the trio would have made the song a real Rock culture with their 'not-so-normal' voices. Nevertheless, this is my pick from the Album. Indian Percussions by 4Idiots Group, bass guitar by Naveen and Djembe by Dhibu Ninan Thomas.
Heu-who-who-heu-who, who-heu-heu-who-heu ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggIfXYvvmZQ
Kutti Pochi
A Folk (type) song, talks for itself. Manicka Vinayagam is awesome .. 'Manasu ellam ManakuthunGOOO' .. LoL. Muthamil talks about his 'Kuchi Mittai' experience here (LoL). Electric Guitar by Keba Jeremiah and keys played by Leon James.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OZnPncgxp4
Yaar
Sung by Dhibu Ninan Thomas, a quite moody song - conversation with self type (or "one-peg-parcel-please" kind). Piano by Leon James, lyrics Vivek.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuit-AdnJSs
Prabalamagave
(Again Santosh) Reminds me the 80s Billboard days ... Disco (awesome) Dewana ... Siddharth(SID) seems to be a decent singer, surprised. Don't know what all he has in store - "Pazhaya Paanigal Puthiya Paanigal Karaithu Poosiya Kalaingyan Naanada", maybe Muthamil talks about SID. Electric guitars by Joseph Vijay accompanied by Naveen with bass guitar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huzfDI5P55E
Then, there are Karokee versions for 2 songs 'Endi Ippadi' & 'Prabalamagave', where the former is really funny (semma Kuthu) :
"
Kalkandu Paaru Ada Minukura Un Tholu
Naan Seema Thorai Aalu
Yenna Thaedi Vandhu Saeru
....
Endi Ippadi Enakku Un Mela Kirukku
Thaana Vandha Kanakku Thala Keezha Irukku
Yendi ... Heu-who-who-heu-who ... Yendi ... who-heu-heu-who-heu ...
"

Kehte Hai Jisko by Karthik Raja
I convey sincere apologies to my radio which has been dusting in my room’s corner. I turned it on this morning whilst preparing to go to work and by serendipity “Kehte Hai Jisko” was on air. A glimpse of my childhood flashed by and even better so because songs I hear in the morning linger with me throughout the day.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xGxxoXlt8k
The lyrics by Mehboob completely reflect my praise for this song. KR truly reached dizzy heights in conjuring up this a grand, magnificent and passionate composition which I believe balances the sensibilities of both Ilaiyaraaja and A.R. Rahman.
My brother remains to be a life line in convincing me to hear talent unknown to me and I’m utterly grateful that in the earlier phase of my life he introduced me to Ilaiyaraaja and A.R. Rahman. When he brought home Grahan’s music, I thought it would be a cracker of an album considering his inclination towards soulful melodies. I was barely eight years old and at that age my ears were like a sieve which only filtered high on melody and intricately layered songs down to my soul and now I doubt this characteristic will ever leave me. Unfortunately, Grahan film got a delayed release hence the songs didn’t get any mainstream publicity.
In today’s time artists have many routes of signing themselves with a brand, record label and so forth. Back then the definition of “A Struggling Artist” was apt in every sense even if it meant belonging to a musically affluent family. It makes my blood boil when people like Karthik Raja don’t get their due but I’ve realised completely drowning in a song and then pondering over the past, present and future of “commercial” music seriously becomes pointless.
A song accepted by a listener as being beyond time is way more valuable than a song which receives a piece of paper or plastic or metal on a stage.
Happy Listening!

rock ballad enna?
I don't know whether you are joking or really eager to know, I take it that you are interested and please allow me to share with you a little bit I know about it :
Music is Abstact, you can't fit it in a big fat bottle called genres, but we can make it quite understandble by receiving its style and give it a box to settle in. By this it helps us to discuss and make it clear of what we are talking about.
Ballads are verses meant to have a high musical nature or treated keeping in mind that its not for lecture but for music. To make it simple, when you hear a Ballad, it goes up and down like a steady wave. Second aspect is that it tries to narrate a story or a part of the story, mostly folklores. Our Theru Koothu, for exemple Murugar going for Hunting where he meets Valli, is a Ballad. Our Villu Pattu is a Ballad. Take for instance the opening welcome announcement of a Villu Pattu, its pattern is wave like when you lend your ears with the "Ammam" sinking in to do the needed job. 'Age' did mordernise Ballads. I consider "Kanamma Kanamma" from Jigarthanda is a distant relation to Modern Ballads.
Think you are aware of Rock - basic instruments like electic/bass guitars & drums that accompany the vocals.
Rock ballad is a slow-paced structured song style, where much importance is given to the verses and its pronounciation. Slowly, the rock part comes into picture exposing itself & overtaking the vocals with heavy instrumental. A perfect exemple is Led Zeppelin "Stairways to Heaven". Most of the Classic Rock bands, mostly, did a lot of Rock Ballads, ex: My favorites Bon Jovi and Guns & Roses.
Ennodu Nee Irunthal should sound to you like a wave design now. Plus it tells the classic story of the beast who is in Love but hardly can express it. Its not that he is out of words, but his nature does not allow him to fall in love. So he weeps internally cursing that he is so helpless even when his love is so close. And the sounds gradually mount and ends with a dripping note. Add in the Piano, Wind/string instruments, Chorus, Drum beat and guitar cover/Solo.
Listen to it one more time, I am sure you will like it (and find it different), and if you still don't, its absolutely fine. I remember we discussed about Western Classical sometime back, so you have it inside you. You see we don't mind which tree provides Oxygen, similarly, don't mind who is giving music, if its good just breathe it in.

Nasc,
Great Man. Are you a Metallica Fan ? Its been a while I came across such fans (getting rarer and rarer these days with all those "junk" (there is another word for it, but I rather not use it) music getting appauled more than needed).
AC/DC is another band (apart from Jovi and Roses) that popped up during the same time, early 80s. Have you heard Kansas ? They were introduced to me by an elderly friend, and I simply love them. Then there is 'Kiss' and who will forget Queen ("Another one bites the dust" is my all time favourite).
Here is Kansas for you :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tH2w6Oxx0kQ
Other Bands I (used to) follow are (90s-00s) :
Korn (the best - Twisted Transistor, Freak on leach, Falling Away from Me, ... , the ultimate-Twist )
SOAD (Chop Suey [these guys are crazy], BYOB, Forest, Lonely day, Ariels, Forest)
Paparoach (Last resort, Getting Away With Murder, Days of war [Best intro music])
Breaking Benjamin (Dairy of Jane)
etc., these comes to mind immediately (easily). Think it would be more interesting to talk about them ALL (70s to 00s), but don't know if there an appropriate thread for them (and if really anyone is interested - times have changed you see).

Kaththi
1) Bad Eyes Villain Theme - The first bit with flute & the same with Sitar is done well. VERY addictive theme. Flutistku oru periya O podanum.
2) Yaar petra magano? - What a rendition! The music is subtle & focus is on Dasettan's godly voice. Though the tune isn't remarkable, its worth a listen. Lyrics'a Konjam hero-worship jaasthiya theriyudhu. Hope ARM justifies it in the movie without going overboard.
3) Sword theme music, the one heard in teaser, is catchy. Ka Ka Ka Kathi is a bit odd, though.
4) Pakkam Vandhu - Starts with a familiar note (The Malaysian rap band?). Goes on for a long time & turns monotonous. Andha 'Manameee' varumbodhu appaadaannu irundhudhu. Looks like Anirudh has play around with instruments & made a medley of sorts. I particularly like the way he has blended Naadaswaram & Mridangam with the rap.
5) Selfie Pulla - The initial music is ok but lyrics & tune arent.
6) Paalam - just ok.
7) Aathi is the best of the lot....I like the way the line "ooru azhagi, ulaga azhagi" starts softly every time and then gradually gets hoarse from "vaadi..". Again an addictive tune (same as Kaththi theme right?). Anirudh & the lyricist have made sure each and every word in all stanzas are pronounced clearly by all singers . Music doesn't play a spoilsport here. Another things about this song is the lines "Un Azhagil En Idhayam" is repeated many times but each time it is sung in different tone & pitch.

http://caughtinthemusicalstorm.wordpress.com/2014/09/30/raunaq-a-r-rahman-kapil-sibal-music-review/
After “Zubeidaa”, “Tehzeeb” and “Highway”, “Raunaq, A Coversation of Music and Poetry” ends up being A.R. Rahman’s fourth woman centric album and whilst the former three are film related the later is not. “Raunaq” is a precious piece of work and this is evident in the names that have contributed to this project: Indian politician, Kapil Sibal gives lyricism a go and A.R. Rahman lines up a fine assembly of singers. This team dedicate this album to “Vogue Empower” a social awareness initiative in India that promotes woman empowerment.
“Raunaq” begins with “Laadli”, the song can be considered an Anthem, a Qawwali, a Prayer, a Lullaby… The Tabla, Drums and Claps have a unconventionally structured pattern and with the delay and echoes sound even more inspirationally impactful. Lata Mangeshkar, who just turned 85 is at the helm of this song whereas A.R. Rahman’s vocals are interspaced but bring a live and kicking motivational uplifting feel. The nightingale of Hindi Cinema sings with such conviction and her part in the song illustrates her motherly figure in the industry. The usage of a backing vocals and choir is reminiscent of many vintage classics by A.R. Rahman.
The soundscape in “Sach Kahoon” lies on many intricate layers. The initial sounds paint an image of a hill station but with the arrival of the Bossa nova beat a feeling of residing on a sandy coast near the sea is created. Chitra and A.R. Rahman sound like a summer breeze, their vocal projection sounds very fresh and with the support of a luring melody this romantic duet becomes one of the greatest escapist song in recent times. No doubt that this duet can be considered as a song cum holiday.
Jonita gandhi’s hypnotic humming pave way for “Geet Gaaoon’s” melancholic melody which rests firmly on slow jazz. Like the former song this too gives escapism however the contrast lies in the emotions. The brush strokes on the drum depict autumn leaves being swept away in prep for winter. Sitting indoors near a fire looking at the cold afternoon from the window greeting the evening is the image A. R. Rahman has probably gone for when writing this. The sitar is wonderfully woven in into the first interlude complimenting the piano, flute, bass and strings. Jonita’s vocals as ever are overwhelming reflecting pure class.
When listening to particular songs, the question whether it was tailor made for someone else occasionally arises. A.R. Rahman usually tends to experiment with different voices a lot for one song and he might even have ten different versions for one song. Sometimes the final cut of a song might not suit that particular singer but with “Kismat Se” I conclude that it was only made for Shreya Ghoshal. A truly beautiful composition which marriages Indian Classical and light electro pop. The Tabla in the second interlude is another means of going back in time to revisit A. R. Rahman of the yore.
Next comes the fairy tale like “Aabhi Jaa”. The way the harp, guitar and flute have been employed should be an example for other composers on how to amalgamate Indian Classical, Medieval Folk and Latino/Flamenco styles. The “Dafli” adds a rural touch particularly witnessed in Punjabi romantic numbers. Jonita’s celestial rendition again is a delight.
Melodically “Kho Jaayein Hum” has nothing to offer but this allows Kapil Sibal’s poetry to take the centre stage.
“Khatta Meetha” relies on repetition prior to the first interlude which boosts of a outstanding string section. The verse after the interlude is very haunting and Mohit Chahuan and the backing vocals showcase a stellar performance. A. R. Rahman has used many special effects like reverse, stuttering, flanging, phasing, etc. in this song and although they might not be obvious, they provide a new flavour every time they shine through.
Baring the odd sound, “Raunaq” hardly resembles anything that A. R. Rahman has offered before. Even by his standards, the album sounds very original and thus proving his stamina of setting trends is not worn out yet. The album should be a consolation for all the listeners who thought A. R. Rahman had drifted apart from his melodic days!
Happy Listening!

Moondru Mudichi (1976)
Song : Vasantha Kala Nadigalile
Composer : MSV
Lyrics : Kanadasan (Great, great-o-great)
Singers : Jayachandran, Vani Jayaram
Directed by Balachander featuring the fabulous trio Sridevi, Kamal & Rajini
Each time I hear/watch this song, I get the same "shiver" feeling. It increases each time as I know what I am going to see towards the end - the cold hearted boat rower, who does not even consider pushing the help seeking Sridevi away from him, but elegantly ushers her out of his way with his rowing jest. His head is fix, only his eyes study the circumstance and feeds his anguish with events that unfolds to his favour.
A chaotic suitution - confusion & irony taking over Sridevi, agitating her just like the crows circling above, all the while, like the vast lake, Rajini is in his placid thought process, mentally manipulating the occurances as though he wanted it happen exactly the same way, an outcome favouring him like the bubbles from the water, the noise so devine to his ears.
Then Rajini summerises their duet - for this you have to go thru the whole lyrics (care to note the speciality in its rendering), the romance between Kamal & Sridevi including thier naughty desire -
Thalaiyanaiyil mugam puthaithu, Sarasamidum pudhukalaigal
Pudhukalaigal peruvatharku, Poomalai manavinaigal
which leads to the last laughter of Kamal.
Its then Rajini summerises their duet :
Mana venaigal yarudano, Mayavanain vidhi Vagaigal
vidhi vagayai moodivu seiyum, vasantha kala neer alaigal
(Your (same) "vasantha kala neer alaigal" of your dream is the deceider of your doom in reality, I cannot do anything as I do not have a hold on your dream nor a grip to your fate.)
The abrupt change in mood through lyrics, visuals & music is outstanding.
What a commanding lines, what an anixious music. Add in the hitchcockian ambience, the rocking boat/oar, the initial registration of innocense by Kamal, panicking Sridevi and menacing Rajini => Pullarips

ARR would be proud of this...and to all tamil fanatics, if there are some hindi songs in his concert, just chill..music is beyond language just like what these kids have done..

Nov  what an excellent post .. i googled to check the background of the above conversation and found this ..
excellently said. unfortunately AR Rahman is a commercial guy .. he thrives on marketing and sponsorship .. his HC fans are not tamil pattraalars .. Neither Rahman nor most of his fans are culturally rooted ..

Ek Do Theen !!! Initially very reluctant to hear this fully because of Surya's Voice... Later the song grew on me and now to the tunes of U1 it sounds awesome and with the visuals it impresses more than i expected

Cant stop listening to this song, very peppy and always sets me in good mood. Heard Anirudhs version too, but I like this better because Vijays version is more energetic.
