ondhaanondhu kaaladhalli - title track.
Finally came across this one online. This is among my alltime favorite films (adapted from 7samurai; Girish Karnad's direction; Shankar Nag's debut film as actor).
Composed by Bhaskar Chandavarkar, this song in Kavitha Krishnamurthy's voice is of pristine beauty.

(not sure if the link's pointing to the correct time. The song starts from 1:36 in this clip)
The whole movie's on youtube, but sadly has no english subtitles.

Listening to music in the dark results in a cold aura and this sometimes has its own unique pros: one pro being the entrance of a light breeze through an open window. In such situation there is both calmness and complete immersion in the music or a stressed adrenaline rush triggered by loneliness. (Ignore the latter for now)
It takes a click of finger to drown in a song, especially if that song appears at a time which reflects the surrounding atmosphere in its entirety.
Walking in a desert, beside a seashore, or overlooking the ever vast ocean from impressive cliffs during twilight is definitely inspiring. In fact “inspiring” is an understatement. We don’t need our phones, mp3 players, other gadgets, etc. We forget who we are and give into the beauty of nature. Suddenly we have eureka moment and feel uplifted by some sort of divinity. Who needs gadgets to spoil the mood when in such zone? No need, as we probably have a certain tune lurking in our head which cannot be compared to anything at that time.
Conversely, it’s even more amazing when hearing an actual song via mp3 player which takes us to natures endless beauties when we close our eyes.
But the jackpot is obtained when we don’t close our eyes, hear a song and yet still get transported to such realm. This magic is proved even when you know the time of day i.e. during sunlight but you still feel as if it’s different time. I hope you can feel the musical storm too!
I’ve witnessed emotional composition uncountable times but never have I felt a composition which changes the location, time, day and weather. Now this is certainly something you don’t get to hear every day.
Isai Puyal is not a storm but the complete opposite as a saviour against such violent disturbances.
Someone’s playing music and I’m in the darkness listening to it. (Thamizh: evanoa oruvan vaasikkiRaan...iruttilirundhu naan yaasikkiRaen)
Quietly take me into your arms, beneath the sheet of the night.

+1. Great pick P_R. Very interesting composition. Starts off in a lazy fashion, but peaks up in charanam and let it go in lazy mode again at the end of charanam. The sweetness in the song is in the longest charanam lines:
kallOdum muLLOdum thaLLaadum sempoovai neeyum aLLa ammamma ennenna rasithEn (wonderful!)
munnaalum pinnaalum muthaadum innEram mOgam koNdu appappa thappukku thavithEn
After this, Maestro takes it the charanam higher:
paarvaidhanil naaLum neendhum paavai oru meenaachE
dhaegam thannai naaLum mooda aadai indha aaNachE
and let it go here with ease:
vaasamuLLa pooveduthu thoovu
nam vaasal vandha thendralukkum jey
Beautiful and very complex structure made very simple is always the highlight of any Maestro's composition. Watching the song in visuals is another treat (with that dead body ).

Melancholic filled interludes of unnai nenachchen paattu padichchen >> Bapappa Bapparae + Trumpet magic soaked in Jazz "Puthu maappiLLaikku" >> maraNa mass prelude kuththu from Rhythm delight annaathee aduRaar >> Rational(Atheism) thoughts from Second Saranam of ammaava naan >> March fast Rajaa kaiya vachaa (SPBji would have sung this too!) >> vaazhavaikkum kaathalukku

venkki,
You are expressing your wish, I am with you and I have no problems. This is the kind of soundtrack, everyone has their own preference. Definitely at the time of its release, every song had their own share with no one could pick any one song ahead and this is a no skip/fast forward soundtrack, only a rewind soundtrack. May be visually I can arrange them in order. It is just my taste now after settling down to 23 years of hearing after its release. It may change in next few years, I don't know. I love it because of its jazzy laziness, sudden alerts and rib tickling orchestration with stunning bass lines which makes it enjoyable thoroughly.

....
Beautiful and very complex structure made very simple is always the highlight of any Maestro's composition.
The trumpet (dhaane?) is outstanding. If Rumbumbum is quick, this one has a flowy feel to it - but IMO no less excellent.
And the way violins go in the interlude it gives you a sense of something macabre (imagine how he'd've explained the situation ) - in the middle of a joyous celebration of a song! And the way that transitions back to joy is seamless. Superhuman!
And the way SPB-SJ sing it. bhaavam 'mbAingaLE. bhaavam bank 'nga ivanga reNdu pErum. summA aLLi theLikkiRaanga.

P_R, are you raving about the sequence where violin music blending with the lorry (reverse) movements and vice versa? This is damn brilliant and this alone is enough to elevate this song. Incidently I too realised recently (isaiaruvi telecasted couple of days before). I too was wondering how they did this, Whether it was a combined idea (IR+Kamal) or not (IR did fun violin music and Kamal synchronised with lorry movements), credits should go to both. give them oscars
And regarding singing SJ is one level above than the big giant SPB since seduction is her terrority. The song is funny+seductive. Even in the first line SJ scored skylevel and in the very immediate second line "Valibathin" where adengappa kurumbu by SJ.

I don't think the synch with the video is difficult. The violin piece was generically for the lorry.
It evokes a sense of 'something bad'. The unjarring evocation in the middle of a fun song and then washing away of that back to joy - I felt that was just jaw-drop level.
podhuvA climax paattula - side-la villain chasing-ku trumpet ellAm thadapudalA pOttu bayaththai kiLappuRadhu uNdu. But it merges back to a sad or serious song. In Walter Vetrivel he'd have done that in a lullaby - mannava mannava. But you can kind of feel the cut-outs and cut-ins.

His achievements without KH were mostly in non-Thamizh movies, if one goes by his wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singeetam_Srinivasa_Rao)page.
From a TF perspective:
mayoori (Telugu dubbed in Thamizh and very famous, story of dancer Sudha with prosthetic leg)
thikkaRRa pArvathi during 70's that won NA (Srikanth / Lakshmi, story by Rajaji)

Crazy was already famous in specific circles in TN who go to theater to watch comedy dramas. So were Mouli / SV Sekar / kAthAdi / kOmal and a few others who did samooka nAdagangaL. (R S Manohar was the undisputed king in purANa / sariththira nAdagangaL, though most were satire kinds. Had the title "nAdakak kAvalar")
In addition, Crazy had always been a darling of vikatan / kumudam. So, it's not a surprise that he got his due as a vasana karthA for KH comedy movies.

Following Kamal movies are in my "great" list, most had music by IR (IMHO greatness automatically goes down without his music):
16 vayadhinilE, 1977 (Bharathi Raja, I think Kamal was in a "performer mode" here)
avaL appadiththAn, 1978 (Rudraiah, substantial contribution by other team members possible, including Kamal...because his next grAmaththu athyAyam didn't make any impression and he disappeared from the scene)
rAja pArvai, 1980 (Singeetham S Rao..."disputed territory" in hub, interestingly this is not in the comedy genre that we associate with the few KH-SSR-Crazy combo movies from later days)
moonRam piRai, 1982 (Balu Mahendra, I think Kamal was in a "performer mode" here too)
salangai oli, 1983 (K Viswanath, I think Kamal was in a "performer mode" here too)
sippikkuL muthu, 1986 (K Viswanath, I think Kamal was in a "performer mode" here too)
nAyakan, 1987 (Manirathnam, I think Kamal was in a "performer mode" here too)
aboorva sagOdhararkaL, 1989 (Singeetham S Rao, disputed territory)
Michael Madana Kama Rajan, 1990 (Singeetham S Rao, disputed territory)
I didn't grow after that

"nAyakan had creative inputs from Kamal".
Easy to agree.
Actually I won't disagree on this count for every one of those great movies listed in my post :-)
After all most movie projects are teamwork.
"rAjapArvai / aboorva sagOdhararkaL / MMKR had NO creative input from Singeetham."
This claim is what's very hard for me to agree, as the credit had been given by Kamal himself. Reportedly, Kamal had even talked about learning a few things from SSR.
Regardless of hub opinions. Regardless of all these auteurship / signature stuff that I'm oblivious to. Regardless of not seeing SSR's Kannada / Telugu / kulam / kOthram.
And this is not "discovered" by me thru some hush-hush talk or gossip column stuff. This is what was official - on posters / mags / movie titles. Information available to pAmara public like me.
So, A2D!
I promise not to bring up / talk on this topic again - neRaya pEsiyAchchu.

NO creative inputnu yArum solalvE illai. The particular claim F_R made was more attributable to Kamal because of Kamal's signature there. Heck, someone even made a joke o his necrophilia. You were the one that jumped in and took offence on Singgeetham's behalf for that.

Best intro and best opening song ! I still remember how cheery the viewers were for this song in the theater. I myself felt like requesting a 'once more'. HJ-Thamarai-Singers-Costume Designer- Editing-Cinematography-Direction and even the title design - everything is perfect here. Went through the rap lines and realised even that is written very well (dont know who did it). Thamarai needs special applause for the lyrics that rightly glorifies the character and not the actor. Naasti song. Thanks Feddy for getting the HD video.

My bad, wrong terminology... Was meant to say insult. To say HJ pales in front VA is an overstatement but each to their own.
Plum
31st August 2012, 10:33 PM
Yeah. So, this is the construct that you are not getting.
"To say HJ pales before VA is an insult" - right?
It seems it is easier for the politcally correct society to see the oddity in the above statement (a>A) than (a=A)
Example for (a=A)
"HJ is as qualified as Rahman to get a Oscar".
The net effect of this statement being positive, PC people dont see the oddity in the above statement.
This is precisely the tendency that I have been fighting against all my life in this forum.
Sometimes, equating small a to big A is as offensive as a negative statement(even if true) like small a i less than big A.
I am not surprised Maddy found this (a=A) statement odd.
That is called a proper sense of discrimination. People flaunting that "I have no discrimination" are actually fooling themselves that they are "True" music fans. True music fans must grade musical output - ellAm equalnu solRadhu democracy, not art appreciation.

I just feel that HJ has more chances of being an addition to the chronological order of MSV-IR-ARR from the current crop of MDs. I would defend HJ more than Yuvan or GVP if it came to last resort and if this doesn't prove my biasness then

Rousing start to the song thanks to the choir and the bagpipes followed by Raaja special strings. And a 70 year old's vocals sounding so serene. Surprisingly Bela matches him note to note. Lovely piano / strings work in the ludes. And the charanam connect with pallavi, nobody does it better than Raaja. So lovely to listen to:
..
Special mention to the harmony layers throughout. Listening with your eyes closed recommended. Also when nobody is around so that you can freely sway your head to the tune swings. This is the 3rd 10/10 song in NEPV.

A host of at-least6/7 characters are introduced/come and go in funny sequences throughout the song. Absolute FUN Song. Riot of a song making. Sundar C, where the hell are you man?.. Plumji,
Yes. Now I find the resemblance between the raja song and this one. Even the saranams are quite similar to some other Raja song which I am unable to recollect now. However, for a 30+ MD to come up with such a number requires some talent at least. Should give him done credit.

Listening to Azhagae Sugamaa. It's out of the world. Srinivas and Sadhana Sargam have lived in this song with their mesmerizing voices and expressions. They bring out the emotions so beautifully. When the piano and violin take over from the singers (the final 1.5 mins) we are taken to a different world altogether. It's a blissful experience ! I so wish someone translates the lyrics in English, so that the non-Tamil speaking people too can fully experience the greatness of this song. Be it music, rendition or lyrics, love and separation cannot be expressed better than this. Immortal stuff !!

Separated from you, O beauty, I lost a sense of mine

Co-incidentally listening to Aalvandhan songs for the past two days. Azhagukku thai poruppu on top for me and then kadavul pathi. Liked Africa kattupuli too especially the part before the 2nd charanam. The album according to me was quite good. Enough to satisfy the singer in me. Flashes of brilliance in a lot of places.

Was actually mesmerised by the way the song was picturised when the movie released in theatres..This song was quite popular with boys of my age group. Many of them tried impersonating Kamal's voice from the song too. Went first day with my family to watch the movie at Sangam. All of them karichikotified the whole movie. I being just a 11 year old kid could get very little from the movie as well. But subsequent viewings over the years helped

Liked "Kaatrai konjam" and "ennodu vaa vaa". Vaanam mella - OK. Didn't like the other songs though they were good in parts including Sunidhi's song.
Both the yuvan songs were bad. Someone should have sung Vaanam mella song. Ilayaraja's voice sounds awkward here.
Average lyrics. I think I might like the songs once the film releases since Gautham is known for good visuals.

ennodu vaa vaa again after selva's post - this song is a vanilla icecream covered with caramel and nuts - meant for our tastes..
Playfulness oozing out of the song right from the starting 'guitar' - the crazy thing abt the song is by far it is the only one song that mixes both acoustic WCM instruments with a good deal of synth and the mix is 'zanny' and 'crazy' - delighting purists and popists in the same song - no wonder it attracts universally charitable comments.
