Mirattal - padam paarka koodathu endradhukkaghava intha title?
A remake of a telugu movie, but not every telugu movies has to be remade into tamils, although there has been some good in between like Jeyam, M kumaran son of mahalakshmi, Something Something, Santhosh Subramaniam.
Vinay looks out of place as an action star. Heroine is looking like a clone of Sheryl Brinto. Why didnt they hire sheryl Brinto instead of going all the way to kannada for a heroine? Santhanam ...a bit dissapointing, but as per tradition Santhanam will have a beer drinking scene with hero. Prabhu has very little to doo same with "Ghajini" villain cant rem his name.
I watched the movie my self because of the "S factor", not Shankar but Santhanam. He has too many movies in his hand IMO, he should have choose less and give his team opportunity to come with good comedy dialogues. Factu factu factu factu.

Happened to wake up at 4AM unexpectedly and settled for Indru Nee Naalai Naan, Directed by "Major", as he credits himself in the titles. Remember vividly from Doordarshan days - what I remember is some decent songs, some funny business between Sivagumar and Latchumi, and vaguely understandable adultery. Remember LOL mostly - even at that age, Sivakumar's LOL potential was well recognised and appreciated. Man's a (unintentional) LOL legend.
Watching it again, there's a decent semblance of a knot and potential in the theme and screenplay(by "Major" himself). Theme and the screenplay is quite bold. Right from the moment Sivagumaar(in an awful performance) sizes up Lakshmi, ostensibly as a prospective bride for his foster brother Jaishankar to the frustrated momens of Lakshmi neglected by husband Jai for long stretches of the movie(Jai in a subtle performance hints at impotence brilliantly, and even the screenplay-dialogues catch this aspect very very well without being explicit), and the eventual bursting of the dam of feelings between Lakshmi and Sivagumaar on a cliched rainy night post Jai's death.
The film is bold even for now wherein we would refuse to acknowledge the dynamics of the aNNi-kozhundhan relationship as dictated by the circumstances of this story.
Lakshmi, tailormade for the role, is very good and Jaishankar, in an insignificant role, does exactly what the role requires in a subtle performance that is sure to miss appreciation for the weight it adds to the story.
But Sivagumaar, central to the movie, destroys it all with a laughable performance right down to the climax, which is chillingly individualistic without bowing to the stndard issue "living for the children", which is what I expected even in this viewing, having forgotten the individualistic decision of Lakshmi, betrayed by fate all her life, takes, steadfastly refusing to embrace the noble, idealistic, "bringing up sivagumaar's children with Sulakshana" kind of climax a standard issue tamil film even of these times is expected to give.
Coupled with all these dynamics, and the dynamic of Jai being busy with all his party activities, the partymen-Jai relationship and screenplay contrivances all point to a Kerala influence.
I remember the titles said "kadhai - T A Balan". Sounds like a Malayalam original to me.
I am sure the Malayalam original with any competent Mallu lead actor would be a brilliant mine of subtext.
Lastly, the reason I sat through this till 7AM - ofcourse, Raja dispenses this unworthy vehicle with backbone-enabling songs and BGM, firmly keeping the film from collapsing right until the climax when Sivagumaar finally collapses the film after 3 hrs of single handed effort, with his "innaikkkkuuaaau neeeeeee naaaaaaalaikku naan".
The songs are situational and sit well on the movie - mottu vitta mullai chedi captures several dynamics from Sulakshana's freshly blossomed pregnancy celebration, Lakshmi fighting her feelings of happines for friend sulakshana and Sivagumaar(whom she had mistaken for her bridegroom in her pelli choopulu earlier), Jai very subtly excusing himself from the scene when Lakshmi, in the second stanza talks about her vaaliba vayasu feelings remaining unrequited.
Thaazhamboove kannurangu is a racy thaalattu(ivlo forceA paadina kozhandhai epdi thoongum) but the kozhandhai in question faces a life full of such forceful events destined to end in tragedy so perhaps it is apt.
Kaangeyam kaalaigale is suitably rumbunctious.
And then of course, the coup de grace of the movie - Pon Vaanam Panneer thoovudhu, the one reason why I kept awake till the end of the movie.
adhu sari, why this big a write up for this movie? I am just feeling generous and more importantly, speculating that there is a malayalam original. Can anyone point out? Would make a good movie with a better perfomer in place of Sivakumar, and a better director than "major" - Mammootty and Sethumadhavan perhaps?
Good post, plum. munboru samayam intha torture-A pArthEn....as you said, good subject, totally spoiled by the lead actor.

Watched first hour of Venggayam (scheduled to watch something else at 10pm), looked good. The actors are all good, only the romance angle slowed things down. Some really good dialogues, like:
random guy: sAmi kumbudula?
The cop: ippOthan kumbudutten
random guy: netthiyila neeru illa.
the cop: (pissed off) un mandaiyila moola illa, ippO kEttEnA?
there are moments when dialogues like this whizz by. Wished had watched it in full.

Sankagiri Rajkumar's debut film ‘Vengayam', made with the help of people from his village, strikes a blow against superstition (http://www.flonnet.com/fl2909/stories/20120518290908200.htm)
http://www.flonnet.com/fl2909/images/20120518290908201.jpg
Some of the cast of “Vengayam”. Out of a total of 105 actors in the movie, 96 are the director's relatives from his native village.
OVER 100 years have rolled by since the nationalist revolutionary poet Subramanya Bharathi wrote this famous poem The Present Condition of the Indians. Bharathi expressed his anguish at the plight of his countrymen who were stuck in the quagmire of superstitious beliefs that came in the way of liberation from the colonial yoke.
But irrational beliefs are so deep-rooted in society that despite the relentless battle launched by Bharathi and several rationalists, including the doyen of the communist movement in South India, M. Singaravelu, and the Dravidar Kazhagam founder, ‘Periyar' E.V. Ramasamy, a large majority of the population in Tamil Nadu continues to be under the spell of fake godmen, black magic practitioners, deceitful soothsayers and fallacious astrologers. The multi-pronged battle against this social scourge has not died down. Right from the 1930s, when the first Tamil talkie was released, a good section of writers, artists and film personalities have used the powerful mass medium of cinema to promote rationalist and scientific ideas.
Repackaging the onion
The young debutant director Sankagiri Rajkumar's Vengayam, which lashes out at forces unleashing superstitious beliefs, reinforces the belief that Tamil cinema's fight against irrationality will not end so easily.
Though the film was originally released in September 2011, it did not do well for various reasons. However, when it was re-released on March 23 with a slightly modified title – ‘ven' Gayam – by the actor-director Cheran, it started making considerable impact. Describing the movie as one produced by common people in a village, Cheran said that if such excellent initiatives were allowed to flop, a time would come when no good movie would be made in the State.
The film, made on a shoestring budget, is unique in many ways. It depicts the collective might of the people, particularly youngsters, who take on fake godmen, astrologers, tantriks and soothsayers who play havoc with the lives of individuals.
Rajkumar's passion to enter the celluloid world as a director wielding his camera against superstitions was fired by the tragic death of his uncle, a victim of a reckless astrologer's predictions.
http://www.flonnet.com/fl2909/images/20120518290908202.jpg
S.M. MANICKAM, THE director's father, in a scene from the film.
In not relying much on professional actors, the director seems to have adopted Shyam Benegal's experiment of involving a large number of villagers in making the Hindi movie Manthan (The Churning, 1976), which is based on rural empowerment.
Rajkumar has inspired many residents of his native village, Chettipatti in Salem district, to don the roles in Vengayam. Almost all these “stars” have performed with utmost dedication, breathing life into the characters.
Vengayam (onion), the title of the film, has great significance. The term was often used by ‘Periyar' Ramasamy to emphasise that the hollowness of superstitions is a fact just like the emptiness of an onion, which gets revealed when all its layers are peeled away, and people should understand this to enable themselves to reject them. The story is absorbing not because of the techniques adopted but owing to its honesty and the realism shown in dealing with the ticklish issue. The movie opens with the note of caution: “All the events and characters depicted in the movie are not fictitious but real!”
Set in a rural milieu, the film traces the travails of the illiterate and poor villagers at the hands of tricksters in the garb of godmen, astrologers and soothsayers who exploit them. Rajkumar weaves the story using certain real-life incidents and his imagination as warp and weft. As the victims are driven to despair and end their lives or succumb to the tricksters' gimmicks, the villagers' resolve to flay the evil practice gets reinforced.
Power to children
The film has not failed to mirror the agony and courage of a small group of children who in some way or the other lost their kin to superstitions. These residents of a children's home, drawing inspiration from an actor who visits them, decide to bring the tricksters in and around their village to book. With the title song invoking the local deity at a religious congregation held under the supervision of some ‘godmen' in the village, the film gives a glimpse of the social life of the local people and their beliefs and religious customs. The story makes steady headway though it shuttles between the present and trips to the recent past through flashbacks. Even the romance of the local sub-inspector and the daughter of a farmer finely fits into the main plot.
There are scenes of great emotional depth: a little boy pleading with his father to save him after a tantrik, in an attempted human sacrifice, inflicts grievous injuries on him; the father, a folk artist, running from pillar to post to collect money for buying drugs to save his son from death; fellow artists sharing his agony; a powerloom worker ending his life as all his dreams to launch a self-employment venture are shattered by a soothsayer; and his grandmother becoming insane on hearing the news.
Besides handling direction, story, screenplay and dialogue, the 28-year-old Rajkumar donned the role of the young powerloom worker. His father, S.M. Manickam, and grandmother, Vellaiammal, are also among the actors. Actor Sathyaraj played a guest role.

Ghandi (Richard Attenborough)
Dubbed in Tamil. Terrible voice acting. Ithula English subtitle-vera, which was equally bad. The fellers saying, "mannar" and the subtitle says, "her majesty" :hammer:
But a word on cinematography, I too have been esctatic about cinematography that involves lots of movement. But some shots in this film stunned me, brilliant. To me now, a good cinematography = any single frame that can be pulled out and still looks like awesome photograph. I forgot that its all about framing...damn me for praising cinematography in Ravanan, I take that back.
One good thing about dubbing this kinda films, it introduces Tamil audience to some greats, like John Gielgud here. The man who tutored frickin' Brando with the latter's dialogues in Julius Caesar (1953).

My favourite part of Gandhi is when Daniel day Lewis' Racist brings out 'divine violence' of Kingsley's Gandhi ('negation' of revolt that Zizek deconstructs well). And unlike simpleton reading of fostering 'respect' in the enemy, it actually hits panic buttons, inviting violence. However, Attenborough's coda has the white lady prevent this. That's the entire film in one scene.

Sir Ben 'stages' Gandhi (where the holistic preferences lies is well documented), DDL 'assumes' the unknown. DDL has a belonging to this medium. To Kingsley, everything is an act, but for DDL, the transformation and coordinates mean more than the 'act', his 'being' subsumes a lot to the discerning viewer, irrational, cold, displeased, machismo, etc.. All while not letting the gaze lose interest in him..

just reading the Hindu review of Raattinam..
Raattinam is a film that succeeds in surprising you on more occasions than just one — the biggest surprise coming right at the end, in the form of the climax. To be fair to director K. S. Thangasamy, his story may appear clichéd, but the message he communicates through his film is relatively fresh and one that makes sense.
Director Thangasamy, who has all along been making the audience take the side of the young couple, in a swift move makes them see the wisdom in the argument of the other side. He ends the film on a realistic note without resorting to exaggeration of any sort.

as usual, the typical BR movie moments, napoleon standing still after his wife's death, as if waiting for a Mcegg.......poor editing, the climax scene suffers a lot from it.......still the moments like the famous "thaai maaman" dialogues, radhika's dialogues in climax, thenkizhakku chemaayile song are so incisive so that they precisely capture the motif......

"thanneer thanneer" - movie in Vijay TV
Top notching performance from Saritha.
Very good attempt from KB. He came out from his usual shell (Stage drama & Brahmin's culture dialogue) and tried something new in terms of Village plot and rural dialogues.

all anything but stagey. Very good camerawork by Raghunatha Reddy.
Using location, locale - ninaithaalE inikkum, varumaiyin niRam sivappu.. heck he'd covered Hyderabad in Marocharitra and then Ek Duje ke LiyE.
So it's not like he came out of his shell for the first time in thaNNeer thaNNeer. btw, as you may know, thaNNeer thaNNeer was a play written by Komal Swaminathan.

thadaya takka.. pretty good for a dark movie. but two things put me off 1. arun practically beating every single baddies at the alley figth post interval, which took the suspense factor out for the climax fight. 2) we don't see the actual perpetrator until the end.. Mouna Guru also had the same twist which kinda killed it (with someone we didn't see earlier).

I don't understand the title. Pretentious-A irukku. Is it about "witness" thingy?
Anyway, movie still works as a good sentiment-drama-thriller. Seen the original, and of course Mammooty is a class act. SR did his best. Music and songs superawesome! Can't go wrong, since its the same director.

Debutant director Jeeva Sankar  has been successful in maintaining the suspense(at least, till Intermission). One of the worst Bollywood movies in recent times. I was literally scratching the head throughout. Let god save the people who plan to remake this film. I was reminded of another bore fest - Knight & Day - every now and then.

Watched the first half of 'Naan'. Movie is quite interesting. BGM & Makayela OK.
Debutant director Jeeva Sankar  has been successful in maintaining the suspense(at least, till Intermission). Vijay Antony is apt as the weird Karthik, but there are too many close-up shots of his non-emoting face, very similar to Arulnidhi in Mouna Guru. There is something distinctly feminine about Sidharth (Anandha Thandavam). Mugha Bhavangal
Yes even I felt the same..good movie, second half-a konjam maathi irukaalam, bore adichudhu. But first half super.
I loved that bar scene with his "father"...naasthi!

In MM, there is a scene where, one of the DILs gives the child to her parents when Saranya (her MIL) comes because, Saranya is asthmatic (or TB or something) and she doesn't want the child to be with her.
The son hits her for it and his wife's parents also reprimand her for using them to keep the child away from her MIL!
This is pretty new, isn't it?
The 'kodumakkaara marumagaL' merged with the 'protective mother'.

Felt the same way as mAyANdi kudumbaththAr (which I've seen in bits and pieces earlier, saw some scenes this past weekend too). Almost entirely templatized. For instance, the same 'logic' of Tarun Gopi doing something 'extra' to a relative and the relative repenting is repeated multiple times (in mAyaNdi kudumbaththAr). and ur take on SMK...?SoftSword, late reply. I'm not sure if I have seen the film fully (TV-la vittu vittu pArththadhu dhAn), but no, didn't find it good. But I think there are moments in Thangar's films where he displays the right instinct/sensitivity to portray rather delicate (or let's just say hitherto unseen) surprisingly life-like moments, some of which are a far cry from what Cheran's single-minded message buses are made of. I'm being vague because I have watched his films only on TV, in parts/with distractions etc. (thenRal alone, I saw in one sitting on cable). For instance, in paLLikkUdam, there is this nice moment where the childhood friend is more than happy to take the unused clothes of his now-rich filmmaker friend but the latter isn't able to deal with the situation. In solla maRandha kadhai too, towards the end, there's a moment where a drunk Kumarimuthu advises Cheran in all sincerity, gets all philosophical as someone who's lived a whole life, there's a momentary pause and Cheran takes some money out of his pocket and gives it to him. (Btw, I revisited just this moment the other day after I saw this discussion.) In such moments, he doesn't feel compelled at all to brush his characters in single strokes. But my problem with his films is the overall tone/framework of the film is mawkish melodrama. So, even when he ventures into unseen milieus etc., you can see that he's basically thinking of old melodrama archetypes. For instance, in azhagi, he has a musical chair sequence which directly harks back to iru kOdugaL!

First half interesting, promising. 2nd half the first few minutes was good but laborious beyond a point. But I liked the subject and how the *conflict* so to speak was established. Very promising till the last 1 hour or so. Took an easy way out too. But naan ticket eduppEn.
W.r.to this middle class problems / conflict of interests etc., Pandiraj did a very good job in pasanga. I hated the pasanga story but the daddies subplot was interesting and well handled.

concur with ur view on pasanga... 5 stars to the dads conflict/teacher character.. 4 for the pasanga plot... 2 for the lous (was irriatating at times)...

I don't know why & how I finished this in one sitting  (must be the -OH effect otherwise it has to be watched in installments only. 2 hours 40 minutes long)
It could have easily been split into two masAlA movies :-)
Though the movie cannot be termed good (too many masAlA moments that are yawn worthy), there are some terrific scenes with the politician Sathyaraj & some interesting dialogs that kept it going
BGM good as usual. Songs FF-ed (so-so numbers).

sathi leelAvathi (BM - Kamal)
I've seen it once before but don't remember much...so, a detailed revisit :-)
Kamal & his konguththamizh
What a lively & fluent performance (could have avoided the car ride javvu in the end, the only scene where he is not like-able; one can't imagine the movie without his terrific comedy). Kovai SaraLa's 'sOkku' exclamations are hilarious!
For a change, actor Raja gets his girl

Very good actor.
Apparently he was a cinematographer. You can spot him doing a small role in Vedham Pudhidhu.
He was there at Mohanraman's lecture about Sivaji last weekend.

vanmayana kandanam...
film is still not outdated.. anytime we can expect the news of its remake.. thought Karthi would be a good choice before Saguni.. now rejetted all.. no present day director can redo it..
it was not a well planned film.. story - scenes & dialogues were developed while shoot is going on [I remember seeman (asst. dir to Manivannan) saying about this]
App, amaithi padai ellam classic cult status. HR did a short series of dialogues in our now-neglected SR thread. A revisitable movie anytime.
& personally I like films directed by Manivannan, atleast till Pudhumanidhan... he had his own style in screenplay.. & even today i don't feel it is outdated.. his packaging style is much better for 80's standards... & no match for the remake trend at present..

Billa 2
Not at all bad , Thanks to low expectation .
Ajith - Dashing and Stylish .Lots of improvement in some aspects he was weak .Hats off!
Chakri - Movie visuals show that you learned professionally .Technically good ,but you have a long way to go as a script writer and readmore (http://www.mayyam.com/talk/#) on what you deal with .
First 15 mins , I thought "Nalla thaane irukku" ..then slowly lost its tempo .They shown as if Billa and family is from Srilanka (though nothing mentioned directly)and few scenes from that camp .people from the camp , Billa , his sister , sisters daughter ..none resembles srilankan tamil in their accent(even occasionally) or any other way.
I am not keen listener of BGM just to make a view on that ,But I felt same sound keep coming over and over . Heroines -kku enna oru 2 naal callsheet irunthirukkuma ?

DDLJ meets Varusham 16. Prabhas has acted well. But the story is predictable after first half. First half was good & second half was so-so with sentiment. But Prabhu holds the whole film well and at critical moments  Really impressed with his acting. Songs waste.

Couple of films from Sun TV's 2 hero vaaram on demand. I love the idea of these 11 PM films with zero ads
Anbe Sivam - Thevaiyaana aLavukku ellaarum alasiyaachch. 70% of the film operates on a different level but the other 30% bring the film down a little bit. The never-ending God-bashing dialogues are tiring beyond a point. I am not for/against that ideology but severe thirumba thirumba pEsra nee effect. A little convenient / dramatic at places. Solid writing anyway. Maddy was outstanding. Unbelievable.
Aan Paavam - What a brilliant film. Right from the first scene to the last brilliance all over. I could see some nuanced writing too. The way he uses his characters to move the story and how he connects them is superb. Seetha's would-be mappiLLai - Radio Mechanic - Pandiarajan breaks Revathy's radio - Goes to him. In Revathy's first scene she plays 'dumb' charades. And the scene which creates the conflict between meesai and Pandian is very imaginative. And the climax, stunning to say the least. So many things going on he solves all the issues in what? < 120 seconds. Lots of long shots, terrific control over the medium. Many scenes are without any dialogues and does Raaja deliver or what? One of the best love themes ever. So lovely to listen to. And the criminally underrated aNNan VKR and his nonchalance. Pandiarajan sir

My 19 yr old wanted to watch a movie and I was adamant that it could not be englees.

We've recently grabbed a few DVD's from a 'OdAtha Indian store' and it had Mahendran's retirement movie

Though I kind-of knew the story and wasn't very enthusiastic about watching it, went ahead anyways, always ready to FF...and we finished the movie in < 1 hour
