Almost 6 years back, I went to office (ethnic day) like Attagaasam Ajith. Both myself and my friend spent money on fake gold and bought a lot of them to create the impact. Office la ponnungala vida naanga nerya nagai pottrindom. Most of the guys came in NI dresses. I used to think that it is more comfortable for them. I haven't used the NI ethnic dresses. So, unable to comment on which one would be more comfortable. I just find them funny. So, haven't used them. I must say it is up to individual preference. I don't think we should worry too much on this. If we think like that, even coat and suit will be alien to us :)

அதாவது "அவன் அதை நிசாரமாக தூக்கி வீசினான்" ..just like that என்பது போல.

Anne , It should come from Malayalam word சாரம்(ங்) ..In kerala and our dist in TN , it is called as சாரம்(ங்) .Same in Myanmar language also.
In Sri Lanka also it is Saaram in Tamil, Sarong in English (or Malay I donno) and Sarama in Sinhalese. In Myanmar Saaram is for the male version of lungi and the female version is called Lungi itself. For both male and female, Lungi is the national dress in Myanmar. It is very common in Myanmar for people to wear Saaram/Lungi to office. I have seen people even holding Director positions wearing Lungi to workplace. Even if they wear trousesrs to work, they would mostly prefer to wear Lungis for any formal meetings and functions (mostly dark green lungis and white shirt). There's a government school next to our office, where I used to work in Myanamr before. The school uniform of the boys was green saaram and white shirt.

I dont think religion would make a difference. My maid in Myanmar was a Muslim (Indian origin and also Tamil) and she wears Lungi. IIRC, around 3% of the population is Muslim. They also have a vast number of Hindus (Indian Immigrants, mostly during WW2) and also a considerable amount of Christians (mostly 7 Days Adventese).

I dont think they can claim their properties back. Anga uLLavangaLukkae kashtam with the Junta government controlling everything. Only a few of the Indian immigrants are doing well there. It's tough even for the native burmese. But things are changing quite faster there in Myanmar with Aung San Suu Khyi's release. But then again there are a lot of chances for ethnicity based hostilities to arise as they have a number of ethnic groups among the majority Budhiststs and in addition they have the Hindu, Muslim, Christian minority.

Can I have the link Selva? Karma is one thing everybody, including the most educated believe there in Myanmar. They blame everything on Karma. There used to be continuous power cuts at some point when I was working there. No body would know the reason for power cuts because media doesnt exist there at all. I once told a colleague if she can call up the electricity board and find out (as I was frustrated that the work was getting delayed due to power cuts), she was literally shocked and said "oh no ! we cannot do that.. they will arrest us, we have to wait until they restore power. It is our Karma we have to be patient" - I felt like laughing loud but did not want to hurt her feelings by doing so.

During 1965, when most number of Tamils were compulsorily migratted from Burma (present Miyanmar), they were brought to India (Madras Harbour) by Indian govt in several ships and kept as refugees (the first time many Tamils heared the word 'agathigaL').
When they want to sell the goods which they brought from Burma, then Congress Govt arranged a place near Madras beach Railway station. Gradually it became a big bazaar which is called as famous "Burma Bazaaar'.

Still in Cehnnai Mannady area people (where more no. of Keezhakarai, Kayalpattinam people are residing) they are using the word 'saaram' instead of kaili or lunghi.

IMO, Astrology is more of a belief that a science. I don't want to go into the Karma theory and whether it makes sense or not. It is up to one's belief and like all forms of that, it need not be fair/relevant to science. You could see the outburst of Indians who lost their property as "nalla anupavinga.. ellam ungappan senja paavamda". You can't expect completely rational thoughts from someone who had lost something. It is more of an emotional thing and you can only feel for them.
In UK, I bought a book that covered cyclone Nargis and the way the military govt handled it. It is quite obvious that like eelam tamils they are also suffering. Somebody should help them.
