Marauding from the edge of the caucausus, into BMAC, thru Khyber and into the gangetic plains! - the long lost persian cousins have followed the perfect barging script - and destroyed the indigenous people.

You should contemplate why would Kamalhassan have Mortimer Wheeler in the script of "Hey Ram" and why would Saketh and Amjad have that conversation in the dark lanes of Chandni chowk...

The man who was associated with "Apocalypse Now", barry osborne, commends Kamal's intricate sense of Art, History, Literature!
Lookin at the videos that Kamal and Osborne - together and separately speaking on the Hollywood venture, it could be something that takes off where Hey Ram left...or what Maruthanaayagam's Khan Sahib emphasizes... Alternative History, history of the fallen and an anti-thesis of history itself.

as far as "aariyar varugai" - there is a divided house - There is the european supported "AIT - Aryan Invasion Theory" and the contrary ones that say that Aryans were part of natives. The textbooks strongly support "AIT" and say that Aryans defeated and pushed the natives of Indus valley civilization - so crediting kamal for "revolutionizing" is a stretch. Otherwise that "Khyber pass" reference was nicely done.
OTOH - except Jalaludeen Akbar and Humayun to an extent - were there any mughal ruler who was kind to non-islamic inhabitants of India and their beliefs? Answer is a resounding NO and I dont need to belong to any faith to back down from stating this fact - If Camel hassan is bent on distorting this fact - then shame be upon him.

here is a scientifically established evidence based paper - http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CFoQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Frepository.ias.ac.in%2F21305%2F1% 2F315.pdf&ei=nuzYT4aiKYWA6QGQtYnBAw&usg=AFQjCNEtQHV0nZg5yAcaBE06Ohcs6dR-RQ&sig2=VXcQZ1_XKMPxVhfmAJsUhA
"This finding is indicative of a higher Caucasoid
admixture in northern Indian populations. By examining the sharing of haplotypes between Indian and south-east Asian populations, we have provided evidence that south-east Asia was peopled by two waves of migration, one originating in India and the other originating in southern China. These findings have been examined and interpreted in the light of inferences derived from previous genomic and historical studies."
also check this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetics_and_archaeogenetics_of_South_Asia
"The genetic affinities of both the ancestry components are incompatible with substantial gene flow into the region during Max Mueller’s purported Indo-Aryan invasion 3,500 years ago."
as a molecular evolutionary biologist, i know a little bit abt how 'history' can often be distorted without scientific facts / evidence - however, kamal's penchant for thorough research gives me hope that he wont stumble and present distortions as facts!

Regarding AIT,
Many came through the Khybher, why pick on me?
Double-edged sword of a line.

Revisited some segments of MMKR yesterday..
The scene where Crazy venkatesh and ponnambalam follow madhan and then get diverted to follow Kaameshwaran - Kamal and crazy in full form is a given.
But a close scrutiny of music opens up a revelation!!
While the "madhan follow" scene is in progress - the music is all jazz and brass - cool..
Then Kaameshwaran crosses path - small shift in the BGM as the followers contemplate- then they begin following kaameshwaran - now the music is all funky carnatic - flute violin and mridhangam full flow - ending in the signal - the "closing theermaanam" - is a carnatic delight with morsing joining in...
It appears as if Kamal and Raaja had a script level discussion on how this scene is going to be edited - but it is not the case - Raaja simply scored for the completed and edited scene and it came out extempore - Just like that and that is pure genius all abound - from Kamal writing it, crazy dialoguing it up and Raaja completing it.. Immense delight.

My favourite piece in the movie is the BGM for Michael character - still wondering how that sound(synth + bass guitar ??) was achieved - eery tone easily conveys that the guy is upto no good. contrast to that Raaju gets full Jazz - brass treatment. Kameshwaran expectedly gets semi carnatic. Overall the music has been done like a musical annotation for a character study than a standard template comedy BGM job. I wouldnt be surprised if it was Raaja who suggested the title too..
In contrast - among heroines - only oorvasi gets a melodious and playful flute with mridangam doing a peculiar thalam.. Trust Raaja to understand what is special and what is not.

Kamal Haasan's role in Haridas
Kamal Haasan never involves himself in a film unless it truly impresses him. It looks like Haridas has managed to do it. Kamal Haasan has accepted to croon under the music direction of Vijay Antony for this film.
The film is directed by GNR Kumaravelan of Ninaithale Inikkum fame and stars Kishore and Sheha in the lead roles. This film revolves around an eight year old boy and his views on life and his father. R Rathnavelu is cranking the camera.

For me the unique record of Kamal is not only he directly acted in five languages (Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi) but also gave silver jubilee hits in those languages and also won filmfare award on all those languages for the best actor. This is what we call it as true nationwide acceptance. This particular record of Kamal may never be broken.

Idhula i know for sure the grand successes of
1. 'Moonram pirai' (remember seeing it in Salem as a kid with family, some 120 days after release and it was a houseful evening show !!),
2. Thoongadhey TT (had to get tickets through 'influence' at Sapna in Salem again! and i still recall the sea of crowds outside the hall, matched only by the crowds for 'mundhanai mudichu' and 'moondru mugam'),
3. Aboorva Sago (watched it first time in Tirunelveli - theatre was 3/4th full for a friday morning show! by the time we came back to chennai, it was a patti thotti hit! later on when we moved to hyderabad, i came to know that the telugu version ran for six months and over in the hyd-sec'bad twin cities alone!! later on, in bangalore, I learnt that it ran for a year in a hall located between Bangalore and Hosur, and each time it was re-released it was running to packed houses for weeks together in Bangalore as well as AP!)
4.SKV - no two ways abt it - a garam masala film that elders winced to look at - it ran, ran, ran and ran for months together!
5.Kuruthipunal - traffic jam near Devi complex first week of its release !! managed to see it only after it completed 70 days!
6.Thevar magan - saw the trailer during ROJA screening and thought 'what the heck ? is kamal going the bharatiraja way ? i hope there are no white saree clad dancers in the background while kamal dances' - it picked up through sheer WOM and a big success in one of the largest halls in South India, DEVI cinema, Chennai
7. Nayagan - thiruttu video available within a week of its release! entire family shocked to watch the film - but, first 20 days, theatres la 'ee, kaakkaa' illai! adhukkaappuram, WOM, plus anantha vikatan/kumudham reviews sent the film's BO sky-rocketing! most interestingly, it was re-released in 1988 at Nagesh theatre (near Pondy bazaar) and ran for a month!!
8. am surprised there is no mention of 'sigappu rojakkal' which am told was a cult classic hit in 1978 when it was released ! 16 years later in 1994, it was re-released in Pilot theatre, Chennai, and run for 3 weeks!
as for the other films, i think some digital silmisham has been done to make them look like they were hits! GUNA was a total washout in AP running for exactly 3 days in hyderabad! MAHANADHI 'mukki mukki' 100 days odichhu!
almost everyone of Kamal's 'masala' films were blockbusters! and his offbeat attempts juxtaposed between masala films were average hits

Nothing to argue here. So you are trying to say that Kamal does not have fan base to keep the movie busy for even first 2 weeks and WOM is the only to get commercial success for him. During those days seeing Rajini or Kamal movies is impossible for the few days. For movies like Maveeran, Vikram which incidentally home production for both Rajini and kamal, I had seen people walking on the heads of other people to get the tickets on the first day. and never have I taken the risk of watching any film (Rajini or Kamal, doesnt matter - btw, as a mini-digression, just so that you know - until I was 14, I was an ardent Rajini movie watcher - its from the late 80s, i got disinterested with his 'image' based films! maybe all of that coincided with my reading habit that had just then picked up bigtime) on the day of its release.

My point here is people go ga ga over their favorite heroes box office achivement more than anything here. Do you think I don't agree with any of Kamal's box office success. After these many years producers are still willing to pay several crores for Rajini and kamal to act in their movies as heroes. That itself talks about their box office success. No one does business for free in Cinema and no one knows that better than Kamal himself and that is why he always claims that he wants all of his movies to be successful.

no need to search for cover (AFAIK) - amali thumali (figuratively speaking ?), traffic jam usage are perfect observations !! thats how it felt around that time
right adjacent to udhayam complex was a shopping center - actually an 'I' shaped structure, that had a book lending library, stationary, grocery, audio shops, a rice/wheat grinding flour mill and of course a ration shop! on the other side of the center, was an 'aavin thaaniyangi paal vazhangum' unit !! so used to frequent this place with cousins, friends etc and hence have vivid memories of the crowds around udhayam complex when the likes of 'kaithiyin dairy' , 'padikkathavan','kakki chattai', 'kodi parakkuthu' were released

IMO , Few movies BO status were always taken in Vacha kudumi adicha mottai way ..As far as I know Mahanathi , Guna , Kuruthipunal had recent run in many towns ,but generally termed as flops ..I was in Trichy when Mahanathi released and it ran not less than 85 days in Maris Rock ..Guna ran for 90 days in nagercoil (not even a city) ,so no surprise it ran for 100 days .. Kuruthupunal BO is underrated just by comparing with Muthu , otherwise It was a decent hit .

One last post - amali thumali is a term used by 'fanboys' who you seem to completely detest. You would mainly see fanboys talk about BO / traffic jam etc., the ones who do anything for their star, waste time on unproductive activities and what not. And I found you using those fanboy-only terms funny, that is all to it. I don't doubt the BO success of any of the films you have mentioned, that is not the point - really.
This is just a general karuththu. And our *one-off* personal experiences can't make facts. For e.g. I saw Thenali 2nd day morning show and Maris 70MM was only half-full (Thenali was considered a huge hit) and PKS couple of weeks after its release, again weekend morning show and the theater was housefull. And PKS is considered a moderate hit.

i gave you my 'birds eye view' - thats all - plus am not privy to hardcore BO stats, nor do i claim to be a 'thillalangadi' in these matters - namakku andha alavu theatre business parichchayam kidayathu! for instance, i was of the understanding/conviction that 'sivaji the boss' was a BO success never heard of/seen before, until someone close to a chennai theatre owner (who is also close to AVM production house) told me otherwise! i was a bit confused, and then gave up thinking, 'namakku idhellaam puriyaadha vishayam'! yaar solradha namburadhunney puriyala - adhanaal, i am escaaappe

Probably the profit percentage should be the ideal way to rate the biggies....The smaller films with lesser known actors sometimes do rake in the profits and these should be conveniently ignored...A good example is Subramaniapuram which released two weeks after Dasavathaaram....

I agree it should have been adjusted to inflation. BTW for sure I know Guna was very much profitable movie. Because I remember reading from the paper that it costed only 50 lakhs to that movie with out renumeration to Kamal. He basically got the money from the profit. OTOH Thalapathy costed 3.5 crores and also made decent profit. Runwise thalapathy might have enjoyed better run overall but profit wise no big difference because of much lower cost to Guna.

Joe, Adjusting to Inflation shud be done for all movies. For that, 1st, there shud be some credible information about Box office Collection. Also, it shud also be adjusted to Population rise. But that doesn't make the above listed movies, and their records as non sense. They surely make sense.
Aravind, the talk is not at all about profit, shares of Producer-Distributor-Exibitor etc, but only about Total Collection, which indicated the max no of tickets sold for a particular movie.
TA, on that DeepaavaLi, the more profitable movie was neither Guna nor Thalapathy but Bramma which ran well!

Joe, if you say that the yesteryear movies made more or equal collection percentage, then why not limit the comparison only there? Even the age also shud be considered no? In age of 50+, what was the collection/hit rate of NT/MT compared to Kamal/Rajini?
Actually there are lots of other factors even in current scenario. For example, Vijay/Ajith/Surya movies too run well and they too get salaries in range of 15+ Cr. This shud be compared to what kind of Box office impact did the stars like Jayashankar/Muthuraman/Gemini Ganesan etc had. Becos, we cannot consider Kamal/Rajini as retired, for atleast some 3/4 years from now!

Talking about box office, I'd like to ask this question to the other Kamal fans here. Am I the only person who finds it extremely tough to convince someone from the general public that Dasavatharam was NOT a box office disaster? I mean, they don't just call it a flop. It is termed disaster by at least 7 out of 10 people I talk to(idhu south. In case of north indies, it is worse - 10/10). Forums, blogs, coffee time chats - its the same everywhere. Forget making them believe that it was a genuine blockbuster. The moment I say it made a huge profit, I am being mocked at. Appidi indha padam enna paavam senjuchu therila. If one person talks about Vishwaroopam, the very first comment we hear is - Let this not become a dud like Dasavatharam. Ippove ippidinna future'la nelama mosama thaan irukkum :-(

1) Nammavar not celebrating - Even if there was no tiff btw Aascar Ravichandran and Kamal, generally Heroes don't directly do anything to publisize or celebrate a movie's success. But Ravichandran gave hell a lot of Ads and Interviews pointing out its collection. Not sure if Sun Pictures CEO gave an interview to a reputed daily like Economic Times, openly indicating the figures.
2) Hyping shud be done by Producer and Media. For Dasavatharam, Producer didn't do the 1st one. Media agreed to certain extent that it broke ALL records. Only God shud answer why it was NOT hyped by Media. Dasavatharam is a **rare** Blockcuster where there was not a single loss report.

3) When Udayanidhi Stalin **skipped** Dasavatharam from the 2nd biggest Blockbuster list when advertising about 7nth Sense, at some point, this matter was informed to Thalaiver, by some Saga fans and Thalaiver expressed his refusal and anger to them.
4) Kamal reportedly told to a Sun TV reporter, which was video recorded, but reportedly not telecasted(?) that Dasavatharam broke ALL records.
5) The 1st official info that Dasavatharam collected 250+ Crores came via 2 Articles from Economic Times & Hindu.
http://m.economictimes.com/PDAET/articleshow/msid-4357064,curpg-1.cms
As he draws gently into his cup of tea, Kamal Haasan displays a composed look. His last movie to hit the screens, Dasavatharam, that was released nearly a year ago, set the cash registers ringing and Haasan's satisfaction with its success is evident. "It was made with budgets that were unheard of in the Tamil film industry and it made four times the kind of money that was possible," he says matter-of-factly of the movie that cost producer, Oscar Ravichandran Rs 60 crore and is said to have raked in over Rs 200 crore with a Hindi version ready for release.
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/009200904102111.htm
It has been almost an year since Kamal has faced the camera after completing the shooting of the block buster Dasavathaaram, which raked in more than Rs 250 crore worldwide.

Anban, I do not think there is anything stupid in thrusting the facts. "fanboy fights"oda fundamental rule adhu dhaane? However, if someone says Thevar Magan flopped, he can probably be(with an easy majority) branded an 'ignorant fool'. In the case of Dasa, the general public simply refuses to believe that it ranks among the biggest BO winners in TFI. It is now 4 years since the movie released. Other than those 2 articles in TOI and The Hindu and the Kumudam edition posted by Sakala, has anybody else acknowledged these collection figures? Our very own producers like US try to hide Dasa's records and he was able to make his so called 'fact' reach the masses. Imagine what would have happened had he replaced any of the other two movies in the list with 7am Arivu?
This is just my polambal & I know this discussion will not go anywhere. Now that KH is in 'NI' limelight again, I sincerely hope the success of VR will bring to light the records of Dasa too, or at least help this movie do away with that tag.

Hatori, to answer only onle line of ur post, this one -> "the general public simply refuses to believe that it ranks among the biggest BO winners in TFI. "
One major but important change which most of us aren't aware. Those are days where 100th day posters, Siver Jubilee Functions, etc were benchmarks. Nowadays, who reads dailies like Dhinathanthi which gets maximum no of Cine Ads?! Also who looks for posters?
Nowadays, info flows from Internet to (Offline)Public. Even Info is 1st released to Net, than the normal offiline medium. Trailers reach youtube before Theaters. So, once if somebody is present on web, (Orkut/Facebook.Twitter, forums, ect) and even check emails! (friends send a load of crap and great emails such that even real good ones looks crap!) Thankfully nowadays that craps get to facebook straight!
Even the Production houses releases movie launch info on net and that reaches ppl much before the next day Dhina THanthi or Hindu or Maalai malar etc. Satellite Channels don't have this instant thing at all ehwn it comes to Cinema becos of their own nature. Unless something big(probably deaths!) happen, they don't put flash line news for each adn every Cine news item!
So, Online is the only way to go! (Maybe we can say there is no one single place to track ONLY these news, even Wikipedia is not one such. It has loads of stories. such thing is not available.)
But to answer ur rest of the thing, i would ask, what shud have been done by the Dasa Producer and Kamal? Then, what different, did other blockbusters, like endhiran producers did to highilight the fact? News coming in Kalaigner TV, Sun TV, Dinakaran, Sooriyan FM, Vikatan group ( ) etc cannot be considered!
And reg Dasa, there is no single loss report from anybody. Also, there were news about its record breaking, in some medias like Ananda Vikatan Etc.

Yes, I lost count how many times I would have seen this movie Sakalakalavallavan. Paatellaam appidiyE nenjula padhinjipOirchi. Ovvoru paattum oru style, graze, elegance, right from the title song Amman Koyil kezhakkaale, katta vandi (both versions), nila kayuthu, nEthu rathiri and to the ultimate ILamai idho idho. SPB's best song interms of showing his singing prowess and Raja smashing it all the way! I don't know if any of you have watched this song in theatre on its first release, without knowing the story. First half of the film was entirely based in village. It was quite good upto that. When they showed interval, I still remember our friends faces, no expressions so far. Went into the theatre after the interval, and we could not believe what we were seeing on the screen! Breath-taking experience! Kamal, what a transformation.:notworthy: Itha pOi AsAlta embarassing'nu solliteengaLE. No one can ever imagine herafter to compose such type of songs. Only once in a lifetime song! In fact every song, Enna variety, enna sugam, enna energy, enna kick, enna melodies, no one can touch that height in touching the masses! I can watch this film without getting tired even now and anytime. One of my top most Kamal movies of all time, just after Sagara sangamam, not just because of his acting and all, something else which can't be described in words. It is an experience of a life time and to be relished thorougly!

I still like it much much better than the Dabanggs of the world.
It achieved what it set out to do and is sincere (of course, there was no other mode of operation then).
I hate Dabbang because it wants to kinda wink at the audience (look, I am bigger than the aesthetics of this movie, I am intentionally pandering, even borderline spoofing) and at the same time get the mileage out of the format. Unselected.

sirutthar - intentionally adopting a 'lower' aesthetic??? epdi epdi?
I don't know about Siruthai...
But on this topic, intentionally adopting a "lower" aesthetic ngradhu necessarily thappu illaiyE? I have to clarify that I read "intentionally adopting lower aesthetic" more as intentionally "dumbing down" or "playing it to the galleries"...
3 Idiots could be a great example- I loved that movie to the core. It conveyed it's message (quite loud and quite repeatedly as well) and it set out what it achieved to do. I haven't read the book but the way the characters were written intentionally as caricatures like the professor Virus, the nerdy dude from Pondicherry etc. were all done in a way to convey a serious topic in a jolly/clown-ish tone... Adhukkaga, Hirani-yaala "Hey Ram" maadhiri-yO, illai "Mahaandhi" maadhiriyO padam edukka mudiyuma-nu kekadheega. :lol2:
Another intentionally lowering the aesthetic is fully applicable to Thenali, IMO... This was unbeliveable given that the man's previous movie was "Hey Ram". Whan I watched "Thenali" first time in theatre, I hated the movie to the core. And I felt like an odd person out because the entire theatre were laughing and roaring throughout the movie including my wife. It was later during the revisist(s) during family re-unions etc. that I figured I damn missed the point of the movie... I completley didn't read the tne of the movie right (starting scene 1 the way Jayaram rescues a mentally disturbed Vijayakumari in a "over the top" (pun intended) fashion...
Thenali is one of my all time favourite time pass movie-nga. Revisits worthy film that doesn't "blade" me at all. SeyaramaR's penchant for comedy has nveer been explored to the hilt before. and HaasaR sollave vendham, semmaiyA lalakeerpaaru (not much with dialogues but mostly via distorted mannerisms, body lAnguEj etc.)

Thanks Sahala.
Thenali is an unapologetic, unambitious, unpretentious movie which actually helps to exceed expectations. It even mocks at it’s own simplicity at couple of places where a) HaasaR spinning the suzhal to narrate a flashback b) HaasaR telling sOthika to get ready to sing a duet with him at a foreign location… To the people I’ve known, surprisingly, most of them see it as a funny movie (just a reality check on myself that I’m not taken over by craziness). Thankfully there is not too much of "aal maaratam's" or "word play/pun etc." that is often assoicated with Kamal/Crazy combo. The movie is very minimalistic and thrives just on the situations than through sheer wittiness.
Oru sila sample scenes:
1. The tree falling scene was downright hilarious – Jayaram’s expression, Haasar’s innocence “andha murugan thooki tharuvaan… neengalum konjam thookungO….”
2. The expression on a terribly broken/frustrated Jayaram on seeing Madanbob rushing towards Thenali (returning back to the home for the zillionth time) to ask “dei thenali andhe foreign rusk dhabba enga da…” :rotfl3:
3. Delhi Ganesh/Ramesh Khanna following Thenali throughout Kodaikanal (however lame and unrealistic it looks) – they kinda serve as folks giving running commentary of the events to add that one last laughter (more of an after thought).
Indhe maadhiri china china things neraiye sollalaam… Even that “eli” fight is surely a better watch than the standard template “dishum dishum” fight one get’s to see in these kind of movies… The only drawback to me is the couple of unwanted duets that is placed at wrong time which slows down the madness.

Thanks Sahala.
The only drawback to me is the couple of unwanted duets that is placed at wrong time which slows down the madness.
This was the last time me and my friends went repeatedly to theater for watching the songs :)

Sila perukku appdiyum irukkum, but Haasar intha maathiri casual aa paNra padangaL, we shud watch it in a mentality which is neither too fast, not too lazy to follow. Avar pOkkulaye poi enjoy pannanum. For me, all songs were a treat to watch, both visually and just the songs. Rahman, oru maathiri thinusaa potruppaar, this whole album is exteremely enjoyable for me, even today.
Tenaali was a product even KSR was confident of, he is the producer! his first, and i guess, last production. The Collection kinda rubbed close to Padaiyappa, KSR built a home, after stupendous success of Padaiyappa and Tenali, so kept these films name for he house, reportedly. (KSR is the rare lucky guy who was able to give Commercial Superhits for both Kamal and rajini sequentially, with both his 1st and 2nd films, Muthu+Padaiyappa for Rajini and Avvai+Tenaali for Kamal. Actually only this 4 movies pushed him to the top!)
KSR actually prepared the knot of this story for Rajini but then Kamal took it over.

Mostly as per out tamil cinema, the person who goes into coma stage will be the one who has an Million dollar info, thats the need of the hour and everybody will rush and push to know that, If you get to know that u can either earn or save a million.

I liked Tenaali very much. Me too, like MC said, was speptical about it but the movie worked superb, in re-visits. This was exactly the same opinion of Cinefan too.
OKOK is oscar material.
This time my own opinion is in "general ward" to myself.

Thenali songs were kinda above average stuff. As VTV said, ARR was running thro a lean patch then (2001?). Thenali,Paarthaale,Baba and Parasuram were not upto the standards of ARR. There were some odd gems in those albums too but as a whole album, they were letdowns. He was back with a bang in 'Boys'

jokes really apart - Denali is Kamal's revenge on the guilty bublik who punished his heyram.
dashavatharam is kamal's attempted revenge on producer gone wrong - the movie became a ittu.

It was not a lean patch per se in retrospect. thenAli was late 2000 but he also did Rhythm around the same time; Baba, pArththAlE etc. were in 2001 but he also did kannaththil the same year. But more importantly, he was doing some great stuff in Hindi these years, but I agree that it was odd to see Rahman churn out such indifferent stuff (especially stuff like Star, alli arjunA which seemed like he didn't even do them) for the first time.

At that point, it looked as if his hindi projects were taking precedence...The tamil albums save a few were grossly underwhelming ....

All the savuthu remakes in Hindi.
amoorla appadi oNNum illai.
But you see the difference in 'feel' when watching the an SKV vs. a Dabang.
In 'Kamal - nam kaalaththu naayagan' there is an old interview by Equa's friend Gnani, who asks Kamal "aren't you - the intellectual Kamal Hassan - winking at the audience, when you are making SKV". And Kamal rejects it saying he is very sincere about those films and if he gave the impression to the audience that he was 'winking' then he would have failed as an actor.
In fact you can see that in the 'lesser' movies he makes. He is very earnest about it. There is little callous about them. Sure, there are odd moments - which are so ordinary that it is odd to see Kamal in the middle of that. But he himself exudes a sincerity and is kinda well-integrated.

amoorla appadi oNNum illai. Yeah, this is a recent phenomenon as such. I don't think there are good examples in Tamil cinema.
I hate Dabbang because it wants to kinda wink at the audience (look, I am bigger than the aesthetics of this movie, I am intentionally pandering, even borderline spoofing) and at the same time get the mileage out of the format. Unselected. This is of course an accurate charge on Dabangg. I didn't hate it, but didn't think it was anything more than passable. That said, there was something to the story of the two brothers (and the film also seemed sincere in these parts) in an old-school way (with some unusual elements like a twice-married mother), which I suspect didn't come through in the final film for whatever reasons. But I remember feeling that Abhinav Kashyap (who himself is a brother, of Anurag Kashyap one of the enfant terribles of Hindi cinema) was on to something here.
Equa's friend GnaniHey, I don't hate him or anything. Not even that familiar with his writings. I just find some of his Tamil films-reated writings that are meant to be serious high-minded stuff, pretty superficial. He's also self-righteous when he talks about filmmakers which makes me wonder if he accesses art in a way I can even understand!

Equa, summA oru idhukku sonnEn.
You were on the money when you said Gnani doesn't have any opinion about mainstream cinema in the first place. And that was reflected in his expectation in the question to Kamal back in the 80s, couched in a "பெரிய intellectual 'ம்க்றீர், இப்படியாபட்ட படமெல்லாம் பண்றீரே...சும்மா தானே?" expectation (one of the more interesting interviews in the book though).
You kinda understand why they say what they say.
In fact there is an old interview where K.Balachander responds to interviewers Balakumaran-Subramanya Raju, saying: "நீங்க எல்லாம் ஆளுக்கு அம்பது ரூபா போட்டு மாசாமாசம் பத்திரிக்கை கொண்டு வந்துடலாம், சினிமா அப்படி இல்லை." Not a new POV. But He said that without condescension or with a feeling of artistic inadequacy (i.e. the complusion to pander). The tone of the answer was be matter of fact.
And the old kaNaiyAzhi reviews go straight to Satyajit Ray, Adoor etc.
Kamal's views were always clearly anchored to 'popular aesthetic'. Something that is often missed.

Yes, I've to clarify that I also didn't mean to classify Baba as an indifferent work (though I don't think it's top rack material for ARR). I quite like some of the songs here, but even besides that, I don't think the songs sound indifferent like "injerungo," "mUnRezhuththu kettavArththai" (leave aside the rehashed songs).
