You can take it anyway you want. For "Kuzhandai" followers perhaps it is a compliment.

Her dad has mentioned before that she only is suitable for hollywood....may be her slender frame qualifies her but she does not seem to have much talent in the acting arena. I am somewhat reminded of Vasundhara Das as a comparison. Some talent in multiple areas but nothing that goes far.

She is deeply emotional, but hides it. She is a trained Hindustani classical singer who sung her first Ilaiyaraaja song at the age of six. While she considers her father's acting more comprehensive, she has taken after her mother's spontaneity as an actor. Ahead of her upcoming release 'Ramaiya Vastavaiya', she talks to TOI about her normal childhood, why her parents' separation did not bother her as much and how she considers herself a dark horse whose time is yet to come. Excerpts:

You had star parents (Kamal Haasan and Sarika (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Sarika)). What was your childhood like?
I was born and brought up in Chennai. My dad is an Iyengar and my mom a half-Maharastrian and half-Rajput. The Iyers have the better looking boys and the Iyengars the prettier girls. When I was five, I had the privilege of seeing my parents getting married. Though we were already a family, my parents wanted two children and my mom wanted to get married only when they had the second child. So as soon as my sister Akshara was born, they got married in a beautiful ceremony at home. My mum tells me I was upset that day as I was not getting any attention. I went to a utopian montessori school not based on money. My mum wanted us to have our own identity and we went to school in a bus and learnt through tactile practical application. I was not good at studies but my school encouraged us to do what we were good at. Each of us, who graduated from the school, developed unique personalities — a little cracked but it became what each of us were good at. My mother stopped working when I was born but she worked on costumes for my father's films and was thus always on the set. So I have memories of doing my homework next to the generator van on the set and hanging out in papa's makeup van after school. I had normal, non-filmy friends and did not even know children of other actors. We lived in our own bubble.

Did the separation of your parents trouble you?
Firstly, they are only separated but still married. From a young age I have learnt to accept people for what they are and I have always looked at my parents as individuals and tried to look at life from the other person's point of view as I expect other people to do that to me. I didn't care if they were together or not but just wanted them to be happy. What tends to happen is when you are growing up and you have famous parents, it's all about them. Then whey they have problems it's again all about them. So you feel, 'Who the hell am I?' While they did not do it on purpose, it forged me to build my own personality. I took to music that became my life and my outlet.

Did your father support you financially?
My mother moved to an apartment in Chennai with Akshara and me when I was 15. Since then, she has been financially independent. We grew up in this mansion with a swimming pool, but we were attached to the home and not to the house. I remember while we were living together, my dad asked us if it was ok to mortgage our house for a movie he was producing and we said yes because for us being together was more important than living in that house. When we moved out even though we could not splurge on cars or expensive clothes and knew that we had to cut corners, we were comfortable. I have been financially independent from my first film and proud of what I have earned, be it my house or car. My mom is a great cook and I have to buy her a big house with a giant kitchen.

What was the lowest period in your life?
When my heart was broken and there is only one person in the world who has done that. I realised it was not meant to be and really loved the person. If a movie does not do well you can do another one, if a song is not good, you can change the chorus but when you choose somebody, you are at the mercy of that person's love.

Let's talk about your mother?
She is one of the most determined women I know. She decided to act after 20 years and won a National Award. Now that I am acting, she is more a friend to me and my relationship is stronger with her as there is so much I can share with her and relate to. She is particular about certain things, so the tameez thing is big in our house. So we will call our parents mammaji and bappuji and touch their feet before we do something important. We called him Bappuji as he really likes Mahatma Gandhi. My mom is a simple person who will still take a rick many a times and will prefer a Linking Road handbag to an expensive branded one. She is extremely sensitive to how her kids are feeling.

What about your relationship with your dad?

He is my greatest inspiration as an artiste and is a person who knows something about everything. He is extremely hardworking even at the age of 60. He starts at 5.30 am, does not party at all and all he does is cinema. He looks all serious and intense, but is a really funny person.

You seem to be fiercely independent.
I am extremely independent right from when I was a kid and would not let my mother help me in my homework. I will always solve my problems myself. While I love my family, I need my space and I'm one of those people who likes to wake up and sleep alone. Which is why I am devastated at the idea of marriage.

Do you see yourself getting married?
Yes, but I don't know when. The person I get married to has to be kind which is difficult — you find the ones who smell well, talk well, look nice and the ones who win their awards but at the end of the day it boils down to someone who can make you laugh and is kind. But he also needs to be having that fighting spirit in life. He could be a doctor or anything else, but needs to be talented at whatever he does.

He is my artistic best friend and I am not going to go around justifying that to people. For me, he is one of the most wonderful actors to work with and my film 3 with him was the turning point in my career. He is brilliant be it in acting, writing or in music so for me it was like finding a friend in the industry who was on the same wavelength. I can proudly say that he is a friend of mine and I would like to work with him in the future.

Are you religious?
My dad's an atheist and we never had a puja room in our house while growing up, but I would sneak out to visit the church and the temple even then. I get a lot of my answers through my faith in God and always feel that there is some power looking after me.

Any learnings from the industry?
Never bitch someone out unless you can do it on the person's face. Also, don't bother about what others are signing, or earning or whatever else. I just have this faith in the universe and believe that I have a time and am a dark horse in a long race. Vidya Balan and Irrfan are examples of that. Apart from the fact that she is a Tamilian, she is a rockstar who has found her own way and is so good at what she does and is also content. I have also learnt to not care about opinions of others as I know that they are not going to act for you and they will not pay your bills.

'Pushpaka Vimanam' lands in Shanghai

Pushpaka Vimanam aka Pushpak, directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, was one of the best films made in India. This silent film was released in 1987. Today it is regarded as a classic. The film is going to be screened at Shanghai International Film Festival to be held in June this year.

The film will be screened at its special Indian section. Rajamouli's Eega is also going to be screened at this festival.

Starring Kamal Haasan and Amala, the silent film also won National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment in 1988. Kamal Haasan won great appreciation for pulling off the film on his shoulders without mouthing a word in the entire movie. The film is a black comedy.

Interestingly, this "silent" movie [PUSHPAKA VIMANM (Telugu)/PUSHPAK (Hindi)] was titled PESUM PADAM in Tamil. Needless to say, it was a Kamal classic directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao. Balram Naidu helps Prasanna to ‘correct’ Sneha?

The term ‘correct’ has an additional meaning down south- ‘to woo girls’. Prasanna, in a recent TV show recollected how he managed to ‘correct’ Sneha.

Back in 2008, Prasanna and Sneha had watched Kamal’s Dasavatharam together and the actor knew very well that Kamal Haasan was Sneha’s favourite actor. After the movie, in an attempt to woo her, Prasanna imitated Kamal’s ‘Balram Naidu’ character from the film and the actress fell for his act.

A surprised Sneha, who was also present during the interview, said that she wasn’t aware of the reason behind the attempt and laughed aloud about it. She also disclosed that it was Prasanna’s Tamil literary knowledge that impressed her more.

Read Dan Brown's Inferno. Maybe thalaivar can attempt something in these lines. Jeevagan , TN's own Robert Langdon,professor of symbology MKU, trying to stop a secret society wanting to avenge the atrocities committed on samanars during the 6th century AD. In most of the interviews thalaivar keeps referring to impaling of samanars during pallava rule. So he should already be having enough research material on this.

even I was very surprised when one of my colleagues, a reasonably well read atheist/ periyarist who considers himself as Tamil/Dravidian but speaks Telugu at home and very fair skinned / long nosed, put forth an argument that Jains were the original inhabitants of Tamil Nadu and Hinduism came into Tamilnadu much later! ( Which is anything but the truth as Jainism itself wad not native to the Tamil land). I was even more surprised when one of the speakers in an evangelical Tamil TV channel was trying propagate that Hinduism is not as old as Christianity! (Considering the fact that these same people have successfully propogated the myth that Thomas, the apostle, arrived in India in First century BC and was killed by " Brahmins" near St Thomas mount......which, by default, acknowledges the presence of Brahmins and the Hindu religion in the pre- Jain era (first century AD ) Tamil Nadu) Basically the people with vested interest want the Hindus to lose the pride in their religion so that their jobs become easier...

Are you saying that that samanars were not targeted at all ? And as for religious violence perpetrated by the Abrahamic religions, Crusades,Otranto and Aurangazeb are not part of this soils's history.

In the same video, Kamal also talks about the current Tamil language was heavily influenced by the kalabharas. Was it different before ?

பிரிட்டிஷ் அரசியை வரவழைத்து, அவர் முன்னிலையில் துவக்க விழா கண்ட படம் "மருதநாயகம்". தமிழக வரலாற்றில் கூட அதிகம் பேசப்படாமல் மறக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு சுதந்திர போராட்ட வீரனின் கதை. பல கோடிகளை விழுங்கிய "மருதநாயகம்", கமலின் கனவுப் படம். சில காரணங்கள் தசாவதார நாயகனின் கனவுக்கு தற்காலிக கதவடைப்பு செய்திருக்கிறது. இருப்பினும், 'என்றைக்காவது ஒருநாள் இதைப் பார்ப்போம்' என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் கண்களில் எதிர்பார்ப்பை தேக்கி வைத்துக் காத்திருக்கும் கூட்டம் கோடி. அவர்களின் ஏக்கத்தில் இருக்கும் நியாயத்தை, இந்த அட்டகாசமான புகைப்படங்களை வைத்தே புரிந்துகொள்ளலாம்.

" கடந்த 1998ல் "மருதநாயக"த்துக்காக நான் எடுத்த புகைப்படங்கள் இவை. கிட்டத்தட்ட பதினஞ்சு வருஷமாச்சு. ஆனாலும் அந்தப் படத்தில் பணியாற்றியபோது நான் பார்த்த ஆச்சர்யங்களை என்றைக்குமே மறக்கமுடியாது. இந்தப் படங்களில் பார்ப்பது சாலக்குடி அருகேயுள்ள அதிரம்பள்ளி அருவி. எதிரிகளிடமிருந்து தப்பித்து மலையிலிருந்து கீழே இறங்கி கமல் ஓடுவது போன்ற ஒரு காட்சி. இந்த இடத்தை அடைவதே ஆபத்தான விஷயம். ஒரு மலையிலிருந்து கீழே இறங்கி, ஒத்தையடிப் பாதையை விட குறுகலான இடுக்கில் புகுந்து நடந்து செல்ல வேண்டும். கமல் சார் சர்வசாதரணமாக அந்த இடத்தைக் கடந்து மலைமீது ஏறி நின்று டேக் கிற்கு ரெடியானார். பின்னால் மிரட்டும் அருவியின் இரைச்சல், நடுங்க வைக்கும் குளிர் சாரல், அமானுஷ்யமான சூழல், எதையும் பொருட்படுத்தாமல் ஆபத்தான வழுக்குப் பாறையில் நின்றபடி அவர் நடித்தபோது யூனிட்டே அரண்டு போனது.

கதைப்படி காட்டுக்குள் தப்பித்துச் செல்லும் அவரை இரண்டு ஆட்கள் துரத்துவார்கள். கூடவே நான்கு வேட்டை நாய்களும் துரத்திவரும். அவர்களிடமிருந்து தப்பிப்பதற்காக மலை மீதிருந்து பாறை ஒன்றைத் தள்ளிவிடுவார். கீழே உருண்டு வரும் அந்தப் பாறை அந்த ஆட்களை உரசிச் சென்று நாய்கள் மீது விழும். போட்டோ எடுத்துக்கொண்டிருந்த நான், அவர் பாறையை உருட்டித் தள்ளும் காட்சியைப் பார்த்து வியந்தபடி க்ளிக்காமல் விட்டுவிட்டேன். கவனித்துவிட்ட கமல் என்னைத் திட்டினார். "உன்னோட கவனமெல்லாம் கேமரா மீதுதான் இருக்கவேண்டும். இந்தப் படத்தை எடுத்திருந்தால் மிகப்பெரிய அளவில் பேசப்பட்டிருக்கும். அதை மிஸ் பண்ணிட்டியே" என்று அட்வைஸ் செய்தார்.

அப்போது டிஜிட்டல் கேமரா வரவில்லை. ஒலம்பஸ்-om 2 என்ற ஃபிலிம் கேமராவில்தான் அந்தக் காட்சிகளை எடுத்தேன். நொடிக்கு 700 ஃபிரேம்கள் வரை அந்தக் கேமரா எடுக்கும். ஆனால் அதை விட வேகமாக மாற்றி மாற்றி போஸ் கொடுப்பார் கமல் சார். நான் அங்கு இயந்திரம்தான். அதற்கு உயிர் கொடுத்ததெல்லாம் அவர்தான்.

அப்புறம் பாம்பை வைத்து ஒரு ஷாட். பொள்ளாச்சியிலிருந்து வரவழைக்கப்பட்டது ஒரு நல்ல பாம்பு. பயிற்சி தரப்பட்ட பாம்பென்றாலும் அதன் வாய் தைக்கப்படாமல் இருந்தது. கமல் சார் அதனை சர்வசாதாரணமாகக் கையில் பிடித்து விளையாடினார். தப்பித்துச் செல்லும் வழியில் பசியைப் போக்க கஞ்சி குடிப்பார் கமல். எதிரிகள் அங்கும் வந்து அதைத் தட்டிவிட, அங்கிருந்து ஓட்டமெடுப்பவர் ஒரு பள்ளத்தில் ஒளிந்துகொள்வார். அப்போது அங்கிருக்கும் மரப்புழுவை பசிக்காக உண்பது போல காட்சி. எந்த அவருவருப்பும் இல்லாமல் கமல் புழுவை கையில் பிடித்து உதடுகள் வரைக்க்ம் அருகே கொண்டு போவார். காட்சி நன்றாக வரவேண்டும் என்பதற்காக அவர் எதையும் செய்யத் தயாராக இருப்பார்.

சாலக்குடி ஷூட்டிங் முடிந்ததும் அடுத்தக்கட்ட படப்பிடிப்பு நடந்தது. கமல் சார் குதிரையில் செல்வது போன்ற காட்சியை எடுக்க வேண்டும். இதற்காக நவீன கேமரா தேவைப்பட்டபோது, இசைஞானி இளையராஜாவிடம் நிக்கான் எஸ்.5 மாடல் கேமரா இருப்பதாக கமல் சார் தகவல் சொன்னார். அவரிடமிருந்து அந்தக் கேமராவை வாங்கி, அந்தக் குதிரைக் காட்சியை கிளிக்கினேன். 'சந்திரலேகா' படத்தில் இடம்பெற்ற டிரம்ஸ் பாடல் காட்சியை இப்போது பார்த்தாலும் எப்படி பிரமிப்பு வருகிறதோ, அதேபோல "மருதநாயகம்" வெளிவந்தால் காலத்துக்கும் மறக்க முடியாத படமாக இருக்கும். அந்த நேரத்துக்காக நானும் ஒரு ரசிகனாகக் காத்திருக்கிறேன்! "

Lots n lots of publicity was made regarding his guest role without remuneration for G N R, in Maharasan. If he had done a similar thing for Kalaignan, it would have received double the publicity, if not more.

Will Kajal adjust for Kamal Haasan?

The buzz was ripe that Kajal Aggarwal might be roped in to star opposite Kamal Haasan in his next film, under Lingusamy's Thirrupathi Brothers banner. This film would also see the involvement of Crazy Mohan and has been tentatively and interestingly titled as Uthama Villain.

Now reports are doing the rounds that Kajal is not in a position to take up this project as her datebook is already full with many projects across languages. It seems she has even conveyed her inability to take up this project, to Kamal.

Will Kamal look out for other options or will Kajal manage to bag this prestigious biggie with some date adjustment? We have to wait and see.

As we all know that Kamal Hassan has given nod to work under Lingusamy’s production and here is the latest buzz that actor-director Ramesh Aravind, who is good friend to Kamal Hassan, will be directing the film.

Kamal Hassan and Ramesh Aravind have been good friends and earlier they have also shared screen for films Panchathanthiram and Mumbai Xpress. It looks like Kamal has handed the opportunity of wielding the megaphone for his film to his good friend. The film is being produced by Lingusamy’s production, Thirupathi Brothers.

Lingusamy has made it clear that he is only producing the film and now Ramesh Aravind’s name has been highly doing rounds donning director cap. The film has been titled Uthama Villain and an official announcement is to be made by Kamal Haasan.

K.S.Ravikumar: My first Hindi film would have been with Kamal Haasan

South's ace filmmaker K.S.Ravikumar makes his big Bollywood entry with 'Policegiri', the remake of Tamil film 'Saamy'. With Sanjay Dutt playing the lead (played by Vikram in original), the film is touted to be the most awaited action entertainer this year.

Going with the fact, the man who gave Kamal Haasan his landmark movie 'Avvai Shanmugi' ('Chachi 420' in Hindi) and Rajinikanth a worldwide star status with 'Muthu', it is a wonder how come such filmmaker as K.S.Ravikumar is making his Hindi debut so late. Ask about this the director is candid in saying, "I can't say anything because it all happens because of God's wish." Referring to his Bollywood directorial debut 'Policegiri', Ravikumar stated, "I won't say it's a good launch for me, because I was supposed to have directed long back. But couldn't do it because then I was busy with south film. It was Kamal Haasan who first suggested me (to direct Hindi film). I did 'Avvai Shanmugi' with him, my first film with Kamalji, and he wanted to remake it in Hindi. But I couldn't do it since I was busy with Rajinikanth's film."

கமலின் மன்மத லீலை படம் ரீமேக் -டைரக்டர் பத்ரி
கமல் நடித்து 1976-ல் ரிலீசாகி வெற்றிகரமாக ஓடிய படம் “மன்த லீலை”. இதில் ஜெயபிரதா நாயகியாக நடித்தார். கே.பாலச்சந்தர் இயக்கினார். இளம் பெண்களை ஏமாற்றி கற்பை சூறையாடும் கேரக்டரில் கமல் நடித்து இருந்தார். ஹலோ மைடியர் ராங் நம்பர், மனைவி அமைவதெல்லாம் இறைவன் கொடுத்த வரம், மன்மதலீலை மயக்குது ஆளை உள்ளிட்ட பாடல்கள் பட்டி தொட்டியெங்கும் கலக்கின.

இப்படத்தை மீண்டும் ரீமேக் செய்து இயக்க டைரக்டர் பத்ரி முடிவு செய்துள்ளார். இவர் ரஜினி நடித்த தில்லு முல்லு படத்தை ரீமேக் செய்து ரிலீஸ் செய்துள்ளார். அடுத்து மன்மத லீலை படத்தை எடுக்கிறார். இதுகுறித்து டைரக்டர் பத்ரி கூறியதாவது:-

நான் ஏற்கனவே வீராப்பு, ஐந்தாம்படை, தம்பிக்கு இந்த ஊரு படங்களை இயக்கினேன். தொடர்ந்து ரஜினியின் தில்லுமுல்லு படத்தையும் ரீமேக் செய்து வெளியிட்டேன். பழைய ரஜினி படம் போல் இல்லாமல் இந்த காலத்துக்கு ஏற்ற வகையில் காட்சிகள், வசனங்களை மாற்றி எடுத்து இருந்தேன். இப்படத்துக்கு ரசிகர்களிடம் நல்ல வரவேற்பு கிடைத்துள்ளது.

தியேட்டர்களில் கைதட்டி சிரிக்கிறார்கள். படம் வெற்றிகரமாக ஓடுகிறது. கமலின் மன்மதலீலை படத்தையும் ரீமேக் செய்ய விருப்பம் உள்ளது. நடிகர், நடிகைகள், தயாரிப்பாளர் முடிவானதும் அறிவிக்கப்படும். சிவாவை வைத்து அடுத்து புதுப்படம் எடுக்கிறேன்.

Jainism spread in Tamil Nadu as it was the state religion under the (non Tamilian) Kalabhras (2-6th century AD).

The fact that Tamils were worshippers of Lord Murugan and the Mother Goddess (Amman) much much earlier than the Christian era has been carefully concealed by people with vested interests.

Oh and since when did Murukan and koRRavai were researched and indentified to be "Hindoo" gods?!

SamaNam and Bouththam (Budhism) were anti-vedic religion and their influence in the thamizh naadu was only natural since their spread in Norther parts of Indian sub continent was very strong during the pre-christian and early christian era. That the vedism in thamizh naadu could not take root during Sangam era until the end of it, was an obvious fact. The spread of Jainism and Budhism as an anti thesis to the (then) campaigning of Vedic "varna" religion was a natural / expected phenomenon.

That the Jains now do not evince any interest in anti-vedism of their basic roots - would not mean that Jainism was not found as an anti-dote to the poison of Vedic invader religion. So it goes for Budhism too.

budhdha was the First periyar and Periya was only the 20th century budhdha - which would be quite obvious to any keen reader/thinkers.


Vedism, jainism and Budhdhism - none of these had their origin in thamizhnaadu. All of them are vanthERi theologies. But the Latter 2 were necessary to fight the first one - during that time period.

KuRumbar, vELir and other ancient tribes of thamizh naadu - who were sought to be marginalised by the increasingly Vedism following Kings - rebelled against the injust Varna religion which was imposed upon the thamizh country and the Life and Social setup. They used and embraced the then - stridently antii-vedic religions of Jainism (samaNam) and Budhism to fight vedic villains. This is the correct interpretation of the end of Latter Sangam era.

kOchadaiyaan aka nedunchadaiyaan - a latter 6th Century CE pandiyan King was the one who - again gave a refreshing re-birth to the Varna vedic pArpana society in thamizhnaadu - by reclaiming the lands from the common pool of agriocultural lands owned by all the people and giving them as "சதுர் வேதி மங்கலம்" lands which were given as a Free gift to the pArpanars for their "divine" qualities!

Thamizh country was never completely conquered and there in lies the tragedy of the Aryan lies! ;)
