IF there is one word to describe Padmashri Dr Kamal Haasan, it’s “virtuous”. The South Indian film industry may have labelled him Oscar Nayagan (Oscar king), but with more than 50 years of acting and directing experience behind him, Kamal feels no urgency to be awarded an Oscar as a mark of success.
He began his career as a child actor in Kalathur Kannamma when he was barely 4 years old. Directed by A. Bhimsingh, he won the President’s Gold Medal for his role.
From then on, Kamal has never failed to get the attention of both critics and fans. He may have won numerous awards and accolades but he said in a recent interview that “it is never about the award (at international award events). I make Indian films, so my standard is to conform to the Indian film industry — that is the benchmark for me”.
He was here for the Kuala Lumpur International Indian Music Festival (KLIMF) 2012 as guest of honour.
“I look for fame among my people, my peers,” he added.
To produce a good Indian film, Kamal said he tries to translate the ideas of his idol, Mahatma Gandhi, into his works. It is a task which, he said, goes with the current age.
“I am a Gandhi admirer and his ideas are simply perfect, as you can see in my movie Hey Ram,” said Kamal, adding that he believes in doing things his way rather than adhering to convention.
He is also averse to the idea of “Western acceptance”. “Gandhi denied Western acceptance and fought for independence his way. Similarly, the question of Vishwaroopam (Kamal’s latest film) appealing to Western or Hollywood tastes does not arise,” he said.
The movie is “a spy-cum-political thriller” where Kamal plays a kathak dancer with a secret past (scheduled for release in cinemas nationwide on Jan 11).
“The Indian cinema industry need not seek Western acceptance, but rather the audience’s. We can compete and take criticisms but not look for approval. In essence, Tamil cinemas, by being more ethnic, will automatically become more international. A country must be proud of its culture — be it story, art and cinema,” said Kamal, adding that in Vishwaroopam, the elements are international.
Kamal said the idea of him being just a director is remote as he had always wanted to act, even from young. “The cinema was one good way to get away from school,” he quipped.
For Kamal, it is also important to think out of the box. “It is a need. I am a very uncomfortable monkey in a box... I want to make changes to fit the different needs of my audience. You can’t eat the same food every day, can you? So, change is crucial,” he said.
Despite his “conservative” background, Kamal refused to conform to social expectations and eventually made box-office hits with films such as Hey Ram, Anbe Sivam Unnai Pol Oruvan, Virumandi and Thevar Magan.
He is perhaps best remembered for his roles in Aboorva Sagotharargal, 16 Vayathinile and Avvai Shanmugi.
Kamal also spoke up against the glamourising of alcohol and unnecessary cabaret-like song sequences in Indian films. “I am not keen on songs as a narrative tool — at least not all the time. Music is a part of life but you won’t be able to fully understand music if you do not first understand silence,” he said.
“I have always been a critic of meaningless singing and dancing and I try to impart this in my movies. Unnai Pol Oruvan is a fine example.”
Unnai Pol Oruvan, a story about a common citizen who embarks on a journey to eliminate terrorists in India, is devoid of singing and dancing.
On his role as father to daughters Shruti and Akshara (Shruti is a musician and actress while Akshara is undergoing training to become a professional ballroom dancer), Kamal said that he trusts them with their career choices and the way they plan their lives. “It has changed now that they are grown women... I have to be their friend and cannot really take my old position as a father seriously, or I will be the one who looks like a child,” he said.
Rising south Indian music director Yuvan Shankar Raja also gave a debut performance at KLIMF 2012, alongside a host of Kollywood stars. Yuvan’s father, music maestro Ilayaraja, was also present.

We at cinemalead have already informed you that AR Murugadoss and Vijay will be coming together for an exciting project in 2014 for Ayngaran. Now there is a buzz that Kamal is planning to rope in AR Murugadoss in place of KS Ravikumar for the much awaited Aascar Ravichandran project.
It is to be remembered that in a recent interview KS Ravikumar has said that he is not in regular touch with KamalHassan after Manmadhan Ambu debacle.


But what our sources say that is AR Murugadoss has already committed with Vijay's project and he might join Kamal only after the completion of Vijay's project. Currently AR Murugadoss is busy with the hindi remake of Thuppaki.

- Plot : 3 bachelors stay together. One boy comes there as a servant. Actually it is a girl. One of them realizes it and also falls in love.
More than the plot the screenplay/execution is the highlight.
- Remake of Malayalam super hit "Ammayane Satyam" (translation - tai mel aanai)
- Director Balachandra Menon
- Heroine oriented subject
- Initially Kamal asked Menon to keep the same screen play
- Nadigar Tilakam was supposed to do a main role (in Malayalm done by the director himself)
- Immediately after it got shelved, Kamal started Avvai Shanmukhi
- Irony is that in 'Kanden Seetaye" heroine is disguised as a man/boy whereas in AS it is the hero !!

- After sometime Kamal wanted change in script and more screentime for him

Kamal started shooting for Ammayane Sathyam when rumours about Kamal - Shankar rift came and Arjun was to take up lead role in Indian. So, i started hating this Balachandra Menon guy just for that.

Shooting resumed immediately after completion of Indian shooting and when it was shelved, Avvai Shanmukhi was announced and started off in rapid pace.

One can notice that Nagesh, who played main villian, SPB who played the police inspector instead of Sivaji, Ramesh Aravind and Nasser, the 2 friends ......... all have found some role or or the other in Avvai Shanmukhi ...... especially ramesh aravind and SPB were intentional insertions.

Yeah.... In fact, Malan was a Master in that area (Gandhi assassination plot) when KH was still a student. Malan's "Jana Gana Mana" was out at least 7-8 years before the release of Hey Ram and it dealt extensively abt the lives of Nathuram Godse, Narayan Apte and briefly abt other three (Gopal Godse, Vishnu Karkare and Madanlal Pahwa) and the circumstances that led them into assassinating Gandhi. I am sure Kamal would have definitely read Malan's work while writing the screenplay for Hey Ram (as there was practically nothing else available in Tamil back then, based on Gandhi's assasination). I am sure Malan would have translated it from some Hindi/English source, but his work was simple, engaging and informative...

I had a lingering doubt all these years.... One of my juniors during my Postgrad days was from Delhi and his name was D.H. Pahwa. One day I casually asked him if he knew somebody called Madanlal Pahwa, and he told "Yeah, It is my grandfather's name"......surprised, I asked him whether it was the same Madanlal Pahwa who was involved in Gandhi assasination, but he had no idea that such a person ever existed (like everybody else)....Somehow I had a faint doubt that his grandfather and the family, had carefully hidden it from the younger generation their involvement in the Gandhi assassination, till I read this article today :-)

“Bollywood Beyond Borders” will take place on April 9, from 4:15 pm - 5:15 pm. This landmark session will commemorate 100 years of Indian cinema, and will offer a look behind the scenes of "Vishwaroopam," a Tamil spy thriller written, directed, starring and co-produced by Dr. Haasan. "Vishwaroopam" is the first Indian film to utilize the new Auro 3D sound technology. It won the National Film Award for Best Art Direction and Best Choreography in the 2012 National Film Awards.

Joining Dr. Haasan in the session will be Jeff Kleiser, Board Director of the Visual Effects Society, the actress Pooja Kumar, Visual Effects Supervisor Tim McGovern, Visual Effects Supervisor Madhu Sudhanan N., and Ravi Velhal Global Content Policy Strategist from Intel Corporation. This session is part of the partnership between the 2013 NAB Show and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry to organize events honoring the100 year anniversary of Indian cinema.

Dr. Haasan has received wide acclaim for his versatility as an actor and has won several Indian Film awards, including four National film awards and nineteen Filmfare awards. He is known for having starred in the largest number of films submitted by India in consideration for the Foreign Language Film category of the Academy Awards.

Also on April 9, Dr. Haasan will receive an award on behalf of the Indian cinema presented by Chris Brown, Executive Vice President, Conventions & Business Operations for the National Association of Broadcasters. The ceremony is part of the New York Festivals International Film & TV awards.

MYTHS AGAINST KAMAL HAASAN

When we talk about Abraham Lincoln, the following things automatically come to our mind: For the people, by the people, of the people. Like wise, when I hear the word Kamal Hassan, the following words strike me: For the cinema, by the cinema, of the cinema. He needs no introduction. He is one of the icons of Indian Cinema. He can speak English/Tamil on par with a veteran English/Tamil professor. He is a genius not only in cinema but as a person in real life. I am not exaggerating but just telling facts straight from my heart.

But, in spite of being such a genius person, Kamal Hassan has always been criticized by certain people. Also he has been treated as a second fiddle in Tamil cinema by the media, by rating Rajnikanth over Kamal Hassan. Well, I am not in for a Kamal Hassan verses Rajnikanth debate. Both are legends in there own ways.

Now, coming back to criticism on Kamal, it’s always okay if it is a constructive one. But in the name of criticism, I feel that there are lots of MYTHS about Kamal Hassan and I would like to quote some of the myths and disprove them here.

Kamal Hassan is a good film maker, but he doesn’t understand the pulse of audience and his movies aren’t common man’s cup of tea.

This is what a certain section of people say about Kamal. Well, if Kamal Hassan doesn’t understand the pulse of our audience, then he would not have been in cinema industry now. He exactly knows how to make a film that would work out in Tamil cinema. Some of his films like Guna, Anbe Sivam, Hey Ram, Kurudhi Punal, Alavandhan etc , which got good reviews from critics , didn’t work out at box office because Kamal Hassan not only tried to entertain the audience with a different script, but also tried to educate them with a different style of presentation. Some of his films like Nayagan were received by the audience during its release itself, where as a film like Anbe Sivam was received by the majority, some time later after the release. That is the only difference but at the end, all his great works are accepted by audience. To him, Cinema is not just a medium of entertainment, but also a medium that can educate the audience and make them think about the aspects covered in the film. After doing a film like Hey Ram, Kamal did a Tenali that was lapped up by everyone, which includes the common man as well. He has more than one million fans outside the internet world and his films do have all the typical First day First show celebrations during its release, just like how other Mass heroes like Rajni, Vijay and Ajith have. He is a great star in box office and because of his box office power; he is bold enough to make a movie like Vishwaroopam with a budget of more than 100 crores.

Some Kamal films are too complicated and cannot be understood by many

This is another general criticism on Kamal Hassan. I have received such remarks from people who claim that there all time favorite films are Inception, Memento etc. I really can’t understand how someone can understand a film like Inception very much, but not a movie like Alavandhan or Hey Ram. Is Hey Ram more complicated than Inception? Well, at least to me, it is not. This myth actually shows the hypocrisy of the people who say that Kamal films are so complicated. One need not necessarily understand all the small segments of a Kamal film, but can always understand the overall story/concept of the film and I feel that should be good enough for someone to say that they have understood the film.

Kamal films have sexual content and cannot be guaranteed as a family entertainer

Again, this is a very hypothetical MYTH about a Kamal film. Yes, some Kamal films had intimate scenes and lip to lip kisses. But such films have been certified by CBFC as A. So the certification clearly states that children below 18 are not allowed to watch such films in theater. But even after that if one complaint that Kamal films have intimate scenes, well, I don’t know what to say. Also, in Indian cinema, in the name of family entertainers/commercial cinema, we see many masala films with heroines exposing too much in songs. But such films will have a mother/sister sentiment and thus they are treated as family entertainers with U or U/A certificate. So is it okay if our 18 years below people see such songs in theaters with the lead lady exposing too much? In fact, some time a very glamorous song in U or U/A masala film/family entertainer gives more perverted thoughts to our teenage people than a bed room scene. Well, I agree, some Kamal films have intimate scenes, but they are certified accordingly by the censor board. I also find some people who like films like Dirty picture, Fashion etc stating that the lead lady in those films acted really well, but complaining that a Kamal film has sexual content. Again when it comes to Hollywood, the same group of people, who accuse Kamal for having intimate scene, appreciates a movie like Titanic. This is what I call it as Hypocrisy. Also all Kamal films don’t have intimate scenes. So generalizing Kamal films as films with sexual content is an absolute myth.

Kamal Hassan doesn’t have a great command at box office like Rajnikanth

This myth has been mainly created by some of the fans of Rajnikanth to just prove a point that Rajni is a Baasha @ box office in Tamil Cinema by a mile when compared to other heroes. As I said earlier, I really don’t want to go for a Rajni verses Kamal debate but I would just like to point out some of the facts about Kamal films @ box office. In 1980’s Kamal is the only actor to give 5 blockbusters in a year, out of which three where Tamil films (Vazhve Mayam, Moondram Pirai, Sagalakala Vallavan). Kamal also has a great screen presence just like his friend Rajnikanth. He has saved films like Sagalakala Vallavan just by his screen presence and made them blockbusters @ box office. Now if you think that these things happened some 20 years before but now he is not that great, you are wrong. During the release of Dasavatharam, there were many articles stating that the collections were on par with Rajni’s Sivaji. Some articles stated that the collections exceeded Sivaji. A film like Sivaji had a Superstar Rajnikanth, Isai puyal AR Rahman and a director like Shankar. But Dasavatharam had a normal commercial director like KS Ravikumar and a very ordinary music director like Himesh Reshmia/Devi Sri Prasad. But still Kamal Hassan was not only able to generate the box office collections on par with Sivaji but also succeeded in donning 10 getups and making a new story line working out wonders in Tamil Cinema. It also had concepts like Chaos theory which again means that he has also given some thing for the audience to educate, apart from the film being a roller coaster entertainer. Now with Vishwaroopam in Auro 3D technology, Kamal Hassan can make it on par with or even better than Enthiran, which would be really great for Tamil Cinema.

These are some of the general MYTHS prevailing about Kamal Hassan. As I have mentioned, these are just MYTHS and not real. Apart from these there are many Myths about Kamal’s personal and off the field career. But I feel that it’s not worth enough to talk about those things as they are created by people who are not able to digest the success and reach of Kamal and thus try to defame him in whatever way they want. Such myths are not given too much of importance even by the general public. But the myths mentioned above are commonly pointed out by many. So I thought I can enlighten those people and prove those myths wrong. Hope I have conveyed what I wanted to.

Whether Kamal has high regards for Gounder and Vivek or not, it is not going to change people's opinion about their liking to these artist. It just underlines Kamal's preference and nothing else. BTW first time I am hearing from Kamal about his high regards to Guru Dutt. Guru Dutt is a tremendous talent which was never utilized completely and in that regard Kamal is lucky because he has had a long stay in Cinema. I hope he utilizes his talent and goes back to his full caliber.

^ There will always be people like these. The guy lost my respect when he used expletives to drive home a point. But to be fair, a lot of the questions were right up in Kamal's alley and I am not complaining. Just watched Kamal's interview by Vivek. Very refreshing and neatly handled by Vivek. Got to appreciate him for the panivu and the respect he has for KH. He did try a lot to make Kamal talk at least few words about his(Vivek's) performances - as Balram Naidu, the role in Anniyan etc..but mmhm...nammaalu valaiya maattaare :rotfl2:

Though it looked like Vivek used this opportunity to kinda apologize to Kamal for imitating him in several of his movies, this one interview must have cleared the doubts many (like me) must have had about the relationship between the two stars.

The hot news is that Lingusamy's Thirupathi brothers has roped in Kamal Haasan for Special 26 Tamil remake and the actor will be reprising Akshay Kumar's role. According to sources Kamal will be doing this project after Vishwaroopam 2 and it will be a quickie. It is said that Zee network has already bought the satellite rights for a whooping 20+ crores. The official announcement on this project is expected to arrive by this week (say Thursday). Her TV "serial" Shanthi was a huge sucess and she secured her place there and then increasing her viewership thru many other television programmes, not to mention her colaboration with SRK. Her sucess is not a fluke, and i think you are keeping in mind her anchoring in the World Cup. That just happened, and maybe she got famous amoung men from then.

One thing I do not understand.. Maruthanayagam portions was shot during late 90's. Now there is a gap of 15 years. If he gets the required budget within next say 2 years..and releasing it in 2 year time span..How he would tailor the rest of the plot with the current look and shape? How he cud convince the producers now with the same story/screenplay/portions that shot already? Wish Kamal directs Maruthanayagam project in a HiTech animated mode by using the images he shot 15 years before. In that way, His fans will find it more interesting. As if we all travel back to the time machine.
