Kochadaiyaan (Tamil: கோச்சடையான்) is an upcoming Tamil period film to be directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth and written by K. S. Ravikumar. The film will feature Rajinikanth alongside an ensemble cast, including R. Sarathkumar, Prithviraj, Aadhi, Katrina Kaif, Shobana and Sneha. The film, which is expected to be shot with motion capture in 3D, will have cinematography handled by Rajiv Menon whilst background score and soundtrack will be composed by A. R. Rahman.

Rajinikanth's next film, after his prior successful venture with S. Shankar's Enthiran (2010), was supposed to be Rana, a historical drama film to be directed by K. S. Ravikumar and dually-produced by Soundarya Rajinikanth's Ocher Picture Productions and Eros Entertainment.[1] However, Rajinikanth became ill and was treated for dehydration and exhaustion at a hospital, resulting in postponement of Rana's filming.[2] On 23 November 2011, Soundarya Rajinikanth posted a message on her Twitter account, notifying followers to "look out for an official announcement very soon".[3] The following day, she announced that her father's next film would be Kochadaiyaan and that she was "[grateful and] excited to be directing [her] father".[4] A tentatively scheduled release period of August 2012 was also announced.[5] The film was finalized to be a co-production of Eros Entertainment and Media One Global.[6] Soundarya further stated that K. S. Ravikumar had worked with her father and herself on the script of the film.[7] With regards to the film's title, Ravikumar claimed that it drew reference to an alternate name of Hindu deity Shiva, while also being partly inspired by the name of the Pandya Dynasty king Kochadaiyan Ranadhiran, and that the plot would be a "fictional account with small references to history".[8] The director clarified that Kochadaiyaan was not related to the the same-titled history series being published by the Tamil magazine Kumudam.[9]

For the female lead role, Anushka Shetty was initially approached,[10] but sources confirmed later that she was not part of the film.[11] It was then rumoured that Asin and Vidya Balan were being considered for the role, since producers preferred a Bollywood actress.[12] Soundarya Rajinikanth approached Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif in January 2012,[13] who was not able to give her dates and the team reapproached Balan.[14] However, Kaif was finalized for the film by the month's end.[15] Jackie Shroff, who was last seen in Kollywood playing a crucial role in the critically acclaimed Aaranya Kaandam, will be doing an important character.[16]

The film began to increase its casting profile after Prithviraj was reportedly signed in to play an important role in the film.[17] Sneha was reported to be finalized for a supporting role,[18] with the actress confirming her presence in the film in December 2011.[19] Aadhi, who became recognized for his performances in Mirugam (2007) and Eeram (2009), was recruited for a role in the film, after he felt that the opportunity was "a realization of a dream that he has had since childhood".[20] Furthermore, Shobana and Mohan Babu's daughter Lakshmi Manchu were also expected to join the film,[21] with Soundarya later confirming the addition of the former to the cast saying that Shobana was the "only choice for the role" as the character was written keeping her in mind.[22][23] R. Sarathkumar, too, was signed on for an important role in the film.[24] Veteran actor Nassar was recruited in the film as well for a supporting role.[25] Soundarya Rajinikanth disclaimed the rumour that Aishwarya Rai was chosen to do a guest appearance in the film.[26]

Peter Hein was chosen as the film's action choreographer,[27] while A. R. Rahman agreed to compose the film's background score and soundtrack.[28][29] Rajiv Menon was recruited as the film's cinematographer.[30] Soundarya made an open invite via Twitter to art professionals to send their demo and work as she was looking for "special art department" for the film.[31]

The film is expected to be the first Indian 3D film shot with the kind of performance capturing technology used in films such as Avatar (2009) and The Adventures of Tintin (2011).[32] K. S. Ravikumar, story writer of the film, announced that the filming will commence on 15 January 2012 and finish before March 2012.[33] The first schedule of indoor shooting will start with Rajinikanth's style and action being filmed for motion capturing.[11] The film was launched with a formal puja on 19 January 2012 at the actor's favourite Ganesha temple located inside AVM Studios in Vadapalani, Chennai.

Jackie Shroff in Kochadayan

Kochadayan gets one more star. After the likes of Sarath Kumar, Aadhi, Sneha, its now the turn of veteran Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff to join the crew.

Directed by Soundarya Rajnikanth, the movie will go to floors in Mumbai soon. Soundarya confirmed that Jackie Shroff has been roped in for the project.The movie to be shot in 3D formsat has music by A R Rahman. Jackie Shroff was last seen in Aranya Kandam in Kollywood.

Deepika opts out of 'Race 2' leaving a bad taste

Actress Deepika Padukone has made a sudden exit from Abbas-Mustan's much awaited thriller 'Race 2', leaving the filmmakers miffed with her alleged unprofessional behaviour.
The action thriller film 'Race 2' produced under the Tips Films banner, is the sequel to the 2008 hit film, 'Race', with the ensemble cast of Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ameesha Patel.
After having completed a week of shooting, Deepika backed out at the last minute from the sequel, which has left producer Ramesh Taurani upset.
“I have been a part of the Hindi cinema industry for 25 years. I have made several blockbusters. But I have never faced a situation like this before. Our directors and the other actors are extremely annoyed with her (Deepika),” Taurani said in a statement.
“Tips as a company in its last 25 years has never had a dispute with anyone in this industry, there is no single case in the association which involves us, it will be very sad and uncalled for if matters go to that level,” he said.
The producer is even more upset with the fact that he was among the last of know of her decision.
“It was on January 27 when people kept calling me asking whether Deepika was out of 'Race 2'. I was clueless. I called her and asked her...she simply said she would come to my office by 5 pm with her new manager to work out everything. Later she said she wouldn't be able to keep the appointment,” Taurani said.


It was, however, told that her manager would be present on her behalf. Finally, when the manager arrived, he simply told me that Deepika wouldn't be able to do our film. And that's because she is doing a major Hollywood project, Taurani said.
Citing unavailability to not having dates and being over-committed to other projects, Deepika seemed indifferent to the developments after having left the film in the lurch.
“I went to her shooting. We tried to reason it out with her. But she refused to even listen. Forget about anything else, she did not even apologize for her action. She seems to have no remorse,” Taurani said.
The film is set to release in November this year.

All said and done , When our own legends are still venturing in bottle making business. omelette headed man is the only Saviour in Indian cinema who has remote chance of pulling this off !

The last from this list of four, is not a famed Rajini joke, but in fact, something the makers of his next historical production, Kochadaiyaan, directed by daughter Soundarya R Ashwin, have had to assure the media about.
That Thalaivar (leader), as he's fondly called by fanatic followers, will be acting, and performing his own stunts, is a vital piece of information to ease nerves twitching at the thought of 3D animation, which this Tamil film employs, overpowering Rajini's prowess. The story of 8th century Pandya king, Kochadaiyaan Ranadhiran (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Kochadaiyaan-Ranadhiran), is the first Indian film to use Motion Capture technology (MOCAP). The technique combines human actors with computer-generated animation, the way it was done to create the blue, 10-foot-tall creatures at the heart of James Cameron's Avatar. Actions of actors are recorded, and the information used to animate digital character models in 3D. When the process includes face and fingers, or captures subtle (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Subtle-(musician)) expressions, it's referred to as performance capture. The most recent film to rely on MOCAP was Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.
Kochadaiyaan co-producer Dr Murli Manohar, says, Rajinikanth, dressed in a body suit, will perform while 80 cameras capture his every move. "The idea is to enhance his performance, and construct visuals for a period piece that can't be created otherwise."
It's far from that easy, though. USbased firm, Giant Studios began experimenting with the technique in 1999 with Lord of the Rings. CEO Candice Alger says they use hundreds of thousands of lines of code to define the human skeleton of actors with scientifically accurate detail: bone length, density, connectivity, and rotation properties. All these parameters are modified to mirror the appropriate skeletal set-up for any mechanism that needs to be animated. Filming takes place on a spare motion-capture stage called 'the volume'. Actors dress in skin-tight bodysuits with reflective markers. Every movement is tracked by an army of fixed cameras, while a specialised headrig camera records the actor's face and eyes. "When the actors perform on stage, by using a software, it's possible to translate their performance onto the digital characters that they are playing in real time. When Spielberg was making Tintin.., the performers would act on stage and he could look into his monitor and see the characters in the digital environment. This helped him direct the film as if everything was happening as part of live action," she says.

It's the technology Giant relied on to create digital doubles of soldiers storming the beaches in Flags of Our Fathers and the appearance of humans moving through snow and water in The Day After Tomorrow.

"When Soundarya said she wanted to direct this film, I decided to support her desire to immortalise her father," says Dr Manohar. Sony Pictures released Tintin.. in India six weeks before the US, and the film grossed Rs 21 crore in the first 17 days, making it the highest grossing animation film in India. The country is a market not just for audiences but technicians too, with foreign producers outsourcing VFX to Indian studios. Accel Animation Studios in Thiruvananthapuram is the only one in the country to offer MOCAP services. "We used MOCAP in bits in Enthiran. A more complex use may be attempted in Kochadaiyaan," says NR Panicker, chairman, Accel, who is awaiting the arrival of Paris-based director Fred Fougea, who intends to use Accel's facility for his next animated project, Why I Did Not Eat My Father. An interesting debate surrounding MOCAP is one that questions whether it's acting or animation. In Tintin.., Steven wanted the characters to be human and believable. That's what happened." It will be a 20 days shoot in a London studio. Rajinikanth told the media at the airport: “We plan to complete 40% of the talkie portion and a song during this London schedule. Once we are back we will be shooting in India the rest of the film. We are looking at a Diwali release.”

Rajinikanth & Sarath Kumar bond in London

Superstar Rajinikanth is in London shooting for his Soundarya Rajinikanth directed Kochadaiyaan under the supervision of KS Ravikumar. Two days back,Sarath Kumar flew in from Chennai and joined the shoot.

The shoot is taking place at the famous Pinewood Studios in London where all James Bond movies have been shot. The film, being shot with motion capture in 3D is using the latest technique.

Today morning Radhika Sarath Kumar and her son accompanied her husband to the shoot. During the break Radhika caught up with superstar and her husband.

Rajinikanth was in his elements and is said to have bonded well with SarathKumar and family.

Later Radhika tweeted: “Had some great laughs with Rajini, reminder of days when no caravan was in use, and we would sit together chatting, eating & sharing warm moments. There is great camaraderie between the actors, all down to earth, humble and refreshing to watch.”

Radhika also tweeted that AR Rahman visited the sets two days back and had lunch with all. The shoot of Kochadaiyaan is making brisk progress in London and the schedule will continue till the end of the month.

Rahman gets another song for Kochadaiyaan

Lyricist Vairamuthu said that AR Rahman was at his residence to fetch a song for Kochadaiyaan. Vairamuthu revealed that the Oscar winner wanted one more song to be recorded and hence arrived personally to get it.

The lyricist also revealed that Rahman flew down to London with the lyrics immediately. It may be mentioned here that the shooting of Kochadaiyaan is happening at the Pinewood Studios in London with the entire team camped there. Radhika Sarath Kumar confirmed Rahman's presence in London and said that they had a wonderful dinner discussing various issues.

Kochadaiyaan is directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth. Rajinikanth, Sarath Kumar, Aadhi, Deepika Padukone and others play the lead roles in this film. KS Ravi Kumar is in-charge of the story, screenplay and dialogues.

Superstar’s day out!

It's good news for all Superstar fans. Looks like not only has Rajini fully recovered from his illness, he is seen cheerful and shooting with the unit of Kochadaiyaan in London, in a happy frame of mind.

Recently, his daughter,debut director Soundarya addressed a press conference in London along with the Superstar.

Now it looks like the big man is also taking some time off from work, to bond big time with the members of his cast and crew.

Radhika Sarathkumar who was in London when her husband was shooting for the film, has revealed another photo of the big time bonding on Twitter, saying, “Day out in London with the successful trio’. The trio are Rajni, Sarath Kumar and KS Ravikumar who is overseeing the project.

Rajini seems to be in good spirits and suitably clad for the weather conditions there in this rare pic!

:notthatway: using MOCAP you can capture the true emotion of an actor and layer it with whatever you want. Hence thaliavar's walking style , mannerisim and all that stuff could be capture and layered over Asian paint model.

<B>'Kochadaiyaan' team expands</B>

There seems to be a never ending buzz and excitement surrounding the Superstar’s next flick, Kochadaiyaan.

The cast was finalized earlier, with Rajni and Sarath going for a shoot to London. Jackie and Adhi too are part of the cast.

While Soundarya, the director, has been working overtime with AR Rahman to get the music, its now clear who is going to be working on the footwork and dances in the film.

The film’s crew seems to be expanding and now Soundarya has confirmed that several choreographers, including Bollywood’s Saroj Khan will be part of the film.

She has tweeted, ‘Kochadaiyaan choreographers; Saroj Khan, Raju Sundaram, Chinni Prakash and Shobi.Its amazing working with all of u, masters! God is great.’

Kochadaiyaan team goes to Kerala

Superstar Rajinikanth and his Kochadaiyaan entourage are off to Kerala tomorrow for the second schedule of the film.

Remember the London scheduled concluded a few daysback?

Soundarya Ashwin Rajinikanth who is producing and directing the film has tweeted, “Off to Kerala... Kochadaiyaan schedule 2 starts tomorrow !”

The film is the first Indian film to be made using 3D motion capture technology. A source close to the unit disclosed many important scenes could not be shot in London owing to the unavailability of the studio there.

The filmmakers then decide to head to Kerala to complete the rest of the portions. As per the buzz, nearly 90% of the talkie portions have been shot and 80 % of the songs have been composed and shot.

The shoot is going to be held in Thiruvananthapuram initially including a popular studio there and then may shift to picturesque locations in the backwaters of Kerala like Alapuzha, Kottayam and Kochi.

Kochadaiyaan is a prequel to Rana- KS Ravikumar

The shooting of the Rajinikanth starrer Kochadaiyaan is going on at break neck speed over the last few weeks.

The unit is now in Kerala working hard under director Soundarya.

Speaking to sify.com, at a public function, in response to a question on Rana which he was supposed to direct earlier, director KS Ravikumar who has written the story and screenplay of the film said: “ Kochadaiyaan is going on at a frenetic pace. It’s in the able hands of Soundarya who is doing a great job. Kochadaiyaan is in fact a prequel to Rana”.

The ace director says after Rajinikanth’s illness, it was decided to make Kochadaiyaan as a prequel to Rana. Ravikumar made it clear that Rana has not been shelved and will happen at a later date.

Deepika calls Rajinikanth ‘daddy’

She may be co-starring the legendary Rajinikanth in the upcoming state-of-the-art movie ‘Kochadaiyaan’, but it seems Deepika Padukone respects Rajini too much to even address him by his name. Reportedly, the sultry actress calls him ‘Appa’ and his wife ‘Amma’. The fact is really too interesting to ignore even though we know that Rajinikanth is probably a lot older even than Deepika’s father. We have come to know of this after Deepika tweeted thanking Rajini’s family for all the hospitality they showered over the actress while on her stint shooting for the movie down south.

Deepika Padukone has also developed a very friendly bond with Rajini’s daughter Soundarya, and they exchanged tweets about the same. Soundarya, who is also the director of the movie, had tweeted first, “Hey guys.back in Chennai after an awesome 2nd schedule in kerala..finished some good work.was gr8 working with deepika?she is such a darling(sic)”; to which Deepika had replied, “@sound_a_rajini thank u for making me feel so comfortable & for being such a wonderful director!lots of love to amma and appa & see you soon(sic).” Soundarya finally tweeted, “@deepikapadukone :):) It was a pleasure directing you! DEEPIKA GOES CLASSICAL FOR KOCHADAIYAAN

The buzz around the Rajni starrer Kochadaiyaan never seems to end!

And the fans are just as eager to lap it all up! The latest buzz from the Soundarya camp is that Deepika Padukone, the heroine, has done a classical dance number for the film, during the Kerala shoot recently.

The dance number has been shot jointly with the Superstar himself. What makes it even more interesting is that Bollywood biggie Saroj Khan, the numero uno choreographer from Bollywood, has conceptualized the song which is composed by AR Rahman.

According to media reports, the rehearsals went on for three days and since Dipika is proficient in Bharathanatyam and Kathak, she didn’t have much trouble getting it right.

Said Saroj Khan to the media, ‘I am doing a classical number after a long time and I am thrilled it’s for a Rajni film. Both have put in their heart and soul into the song and the number has come out very well and will be much talked about!”

Sources say that Superstar Rajinikanth starrring Kochadaiyaan is almost getting ready for its September release. But, it is also heard that the film's teaser is expected to hit the screens within a short period of time.


Post-Production works for the film is going in full swing, also a team has said to come out with a stunning teaser adds sources.


The film has Deepika Padukone as the female lead along with a big star cast which includes Aadhi, Naseer, Sarathkumar, Jackie Shroff, Shobana.

Deepika Padukone gets romantic with 'Reluctant' Rajinikanth

Earlier this week Deepika Padukone flew to Chennai to shoot a romantic song with Rajinikanth.

The number, an ultra-romantic love duet, was choreographed by Saroj Khan and we hear Ms Khan, known to make screen-couples sizzle on screen with their chemistry, had planned some scorching-hot moves between the two.

But God proposes, Rajinikanth disposes.

Apparently Rajinikanth post his illness has become acutely conscious of his age and the age-difference with his leading lady. Rajinikanth apparently asked his director Soundarya who also happens to be his daughter to ..err, modify and change the love scenes. It took Deepika’s intervention to convince the mega-star to cuddle and get lovey-dovey for the song.

Says a part of the Kochadaiyaan team, “Rajni Sir wanted the romantic movements and gestures to be watered down. But Deepika insisted on letting them be. She in fact made sure Rajini Sir was comfortable.”

When quizzed about the romantic song the Kochadaiyaan producer Dr. Murli Manohar said, “It’s a brilliant romantic song. A duet with classical undertones. It’s not a classical dance number, as wrongly reported in the media. A R Rahman has outdone himself in the song. It’s an extremely romantic song with classical elements woven into it. But it isn’t a classical dance number.”
