If I may say so, Moongil Thottam comes out of nowhere from ARR but a striking influence to Santhosh 'Aasai oru pulveli' and a no. in Pizza who extremely popularized this form. ARR's version is of no guitar backing but more on this soft and dulcet tune.

Kadal (Music review), Tamil – A R Rahman
Posted by Karthik

Chithirai nila is a serene opening, powered by wonderfully hopeful lyrics by Vairamuthu, adorned with imaginative background changes and ending on an anthemic high! Sid Sriram powers Adiye with supreme confidence – of course, the song itself is perhaps the first ever old school Gospel style in Tamil and it blends brilliantly with Karky’s lyrics. Vairamuthu’s words are achingly beautiful in Moongil thottam, as the superbly harmonious tune is handled amazingly well by Harini and in particular, Abhay Jodhpurkar. Add Sekar’s cello, Keba Jeremiah and George Doering guitars amidst the sweeping backgrounds… the song is pure magic! The ebullient Elay keechan is like that love child of Mustafa and Rasathi – an addictive combination of reggae’ish base, fantastic choral harmony, and a tinge of Country music. Keba Jeremiah opens the CD version of the mesmerizing tune of Nenjukkule, while Ann-Marie Simpson helps ably with her violin. Shaktisree Gopalan is outstanding as she delivers a knock-out performance with her expressive vocals. Rahman uses the Chennai Chorale to mighty good effect for the hymnal sound Anbin vaasale seeks, while Aaryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam delivers a hyper-energetic, reimagined redux of Yuva’s Dol dol in Magudi. Kadal’s soundtrack is a veritable world music feast in Tamil!

On the accusations of the songs not fitting to the movie's theme, its better that we decide that after watching the movie. The director, who wrote the story, knows what to extract from the MD to take the story forward. We had similar doubts while we heard 'Yaaro yarodi' for the first time. For ears which were expecting a 'Vaarayo thozhi vaarayo' kind song for that situation, 'Yaaro yarodi' was a shock. But when watched on the screen, Mani had done justice. So, let's wait.

Kadal audio creates history!

Mani Ratnam’s AR Rahman composed music of Kadal has become a runaway chartbuster.

Seeing the phenomenal advance booking for the album, Sony Music has advanced its audio launch by two days! It is for the first time in Indian market the audio release of a film album has been advanced.

Kadal audio was planned with ads saying it will hit the music stores and could be downloaded from December 17.

A Sony Music spokesperson said : “There was a terrific buzz and unbelievable advance booking orders for Kadal album, so we decided to advance its release by two days and get a huge opening during the weekend.”

Kadal music is phenomenal by any yardstick with ‘Elay Keechan..’ and ‘Nenjukkulle..’ rocking the charts. The critics have been raving about the music, easily ARR’s best in recent times

Listened to all songs - I do not have words to explain how good I feel about the entire album. Like all the songs but my instant pick is Adiyae ! Oh Gosh what a composition and the rendition just goes straight down to your heart. When I first heard the line "கண்ணால கண்ணாடி செஞ்சு என் அச்சத்த காட்டுறியே’ , I thought the lyrics was Vairamuthu but it is Karky. He's done a great job with the lyrics once again. My next favourite is Elay Keechaan, followed by Chitthirai nilavu.

When Tamil music was confined to certain rules and formulas, Magician Rahman broke the boundaries adapting the international paradigm of musical élan. Now, we have Madras Mozart striking the exceedingly creative chords for KADAL, it brings international music into Tamil industry. This is a celebration for Indian Music Fraternity indeed. Moreover this is the first time; a film with rural backdrop has such a western touch in every track. What’s the specialty of KADAL is that the lyrical lines are penned with rural Tamil grandiloquence and singers render it countryside style, but the musical composition in completely western. Can you imagine the blend of Tamil folk and Rock ‘n’ Roll? List to Kadal Songs and let yourselves into a charming world for few minutes.

Kadal - Music Review

THE NEXT LEVEL OF MAGIC IS HERE. Let the fans of AR Rahman boast for being his diehard fans for this album reaches an unachieved status of World Music. Let us put it this way – Kadal is far best than his academy award winning album Slumdog Millionaire. Listen to every track 100 times and you’ll experience 100 new things.

When Tamil music was confined to certain rules and formulas, Magician Rahman broke the boundaries adapting the international paradigm of musical élan. Off the latter, his musical spell turned to be an avid inspiration for young league of music directors.

Now, we have Madras Mozart striking the exceedingly creative chords for KADAL, it brings international music into Tamil industry. This is a celebration for Indian Music Fraternity indeed. Manirathnam’s Kadal sees the introduction of Gautham Karthik and Tulasi in lead roles with Aravind Swamy, Arjun and Lakshmi Manchu playing important roles. Rajeev Menon is back with Manirathnam after the grand success of Guru.

Top 10 Cinema brings the first exclusive music review of AR Rahman’s KADAL with a clear-cut analysis of songs.

CHITTHIRAI NILA – NATURE’S LULLABY FOR NEWBORN
Vocals: Vijay Yesudas

Rays of new hopes bestowed upon a newborn soul that hasn’t experienced even the shadows of his mother. The opening lines Orey Nila, Parandha Vaanam Padacha Kadavulu, Ellaame Othayula Nikuthude, Nee Kooda Othayile Nikura De, Ettu Vai Makka, Ettuvachu Aagasam Thottu Vai Makka. The situational song gives an immense feel of ‘Chinna Thai Aval’ from Thalapathy. The splendiferous instrumentals on Tin Whistle Flute (You’ll hear it in pitch bend style) with orchestral strings on accompaniment make ‘Chitthirai Nila’ a pleasant lullaby to all, a special motivational lullaby. Vijay Yesudas in unstrained manner lets himself loose in making it sound perfect.

ADIYE – A WALK WITH LADYLOVE TO WONDERLAND
Vocals: Sid Sriram, Maria Roe Vincent

Might be a dream song for the lyrical lines imply such significance. Just try to glimpse on the lyrical lines before listening to this song. Obviously, you would assume, it’s going to a folk song. But what you hear will freeze you in complete amazement. Wow! It’s incredulously stunning attempt by Rahman as he brings in Rock N Roll genre. The piano, the Live Drums and style of Sid Sriram and chorus lead by Maria Roe Vincent gives a feel of as though watching a western classical concert. It has more probabilities of claiming the title as one of the best romantic songs of this decade.

MUNGIL THOTTAM – BEST DEDICATION FOR YOUR SOULMATES
Vocals: Abhay Jodhpurkar, Harini, Sekar

Harini will have her name registered in the nominees list of 2012 Best Female Singers... The mild chords over the box guitars and silent strings running along with the singers are awe-inspiring. Abhay Jodhpurkar transfixes us with his mellisonant voice. The visuals and picturing style will doubtlessly add more flux into the song.

ELAY KEECHAN – LET THE OCEANIC FEAST BEGIN
Vocals: AR Rahman
Lyrics: Madhan Karky

A Cliff Richard touch on guitars that reminds off ‘Congratulations Jubilations’. Fishes personified as a man’s sweetheart girl here. It’s about a man wooing the fishes with poetic praises to fall in his nets. The 30-minute teaser of the guy on boat deck swiftly moving through the gigantic waves reveals its relevance as well. Madhan Karky has used the metaphorical phrases of ‘Fish’ and ‘Sweetheart girl’. Rajeev Menon’s cinematography should have more embellishment to the song that is already generating huge waves.

NENJUKULLE – BELLE’S LIDLESS PONDERING
Vocals: Shakthishree Gopalan, A.R.Rahman

The song has been on its peak of mountainous reach from the time it was premiered on MTV Unplugged with Rahman and Shakthishree Gopalan performing it LIVE... A marvellous orchestration of flutes, percussions, violins, strings and accordion with a new discovery of Rahman – Shakthishree making a stunning performance that beautifies this track. Shakthishree Gopalan makes it clear that she is the new princess of voice in Tamil Nadu now.

ANBIN VAASALE – WORSHIP TO THE ALMIGHTY
Vocals: Haricharan
Lyrics: Madhan Karky

A spiritual retreat by Rahman... Crooned by Haricharan, Madhan Karky has written the lyrical lines in praise of Lord Jesus. Haricharan exerts his best attempts of taking the song to high pitches in an easy manner. The Kids on chorus make the song more effectual. The song is dominated by the orchestras that should have more effect in creating the visual impact.

MAGUDI MAGUDI – A LEAP INTO NEW PLANET
Vocals: Aryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam, Tanvi Shah and Chinmayee
Lyrics: Aryan Dinesh Kanangaratnam

Oooooohhhh!!! This is amazing. While the complete album flows with sweeping melodies, this one is a sudden speed breaker. Hear it million times and you can’t stop listening to it. Magudi Magudi is full of thundering mix of sound and the rap by Aryan Dinesh Kanagaranthnam is bombastic. Chinmayee renders few lines of dialogues, which encompasses the powerful realms of the girl as she says – Naa Magudi Da, Nee Paambu... The lyrical lines by Aryan Dinesh Kanagarathnam and his rendition of rap lines send you crazy. Set this one are your alarm and it’s going to be the best start of your day in lifetime.

It takes miles for a musician to compose such a fascinating music and AR Rahman becomes a complete musical legend of this century with this album. Be it for his compositions, choice of singers and innovative selection of genres: everything is beyond the usual limit of excellence. Having made a comeback in Tamil music industry nearly after a couple of years, KADAL is a special gift for Rahman fans.

Verdict: You cannot stay away from falling in love with it. That’s the Magic of Rahman

Mani and ARR combo is always mouth watering. ARR's collaboration with Shankar is equally fruitful but in terms of staying ahead of times and experimentation, the former stands poles ahead. Their last two outings had great numbers but considering the standards they set earlier, they were slightly off mark. This also gave a set of people a reason to restart their propaganda of uniting Mani with 'you know who'. They have been doing this since Iruvar days. I am only hoping that Mani looks at that option at least once just to realise the kind of evolution he has triggered.

Now, back to Kadal. 7 tracks. Each distinct on its own. Chithirai Nela gives the perfect start to the album. Vijay Yesudas brings the nostalgic memories of his father's numbers. The song starts off as a lullaby, slowly unwraps and then jumps to a different plane. Bliss!!

Adiyae is totally new to TFM. I can understand why people have extreme opinions on it. Aaromale got the same sort of reception when released. Either you love it or hate it. For me, this is the best number of the album.

Moongil Thottam is a typical Rahmanish soother. The song slowly grows on you. Just like the lead pair, the song also takes us for a walk. While the song didn't appeal to me initially like the other numbers, it has grown on me now. It has happened umpteen times with ARR.

Anbin Vasale and Magudi have been kept in hold for a while as I am not able to get over the first five songs of the album. Will post after giving them few quality listens.

The accusations are quite apprehensive considering the backdrop of the movie. Its a complete mystery as of now why MR-ARR opted for such a soundtrack even though there are other songs which doesn't inhibit genres but doesn't hit the milieu right (or atleast to our grounded expectation) we need to wait until the movie releases.

Kadal is an upcoming Tamil film being directed and produced by Mani Ratnam. The film features debutant Gautham Karthik, son of actor Karthik and debutant Thulasi Nair, daughter of Radha in the lead roles.

The film will be dubbed and released simultaneously in Telugu as Kadali.

Transformation of Indian Music – This could be the open-and-shut statement you would make after listening to AR Rahman’s ‘Elay Keechan’ from Mani Ratnam directorial Kadal.

Only AR Rahman can define new dimension of music and his every song has been an illustration over the years. When it’s for Mani Ratnam, the academy award winner doesn’t leave any stone unturned to offer refreshing tunes. While ‘Nenjukulle’ is sweeping our senses in complete fascination, here is ‘Elay Keechan’ that is beyond our expectations. Usually when it’s a fisherman folk song, it’s been a ritualistic style of composing with ‘Elaelo’ phrases, slow-beats and strings.

Well, if you presume this one to be bound to stereotypical pattern, AR Rahman has a bag of surprises spearheading with a western style. On the button, it’s the first time in Indian music industry; a fisherman folk song is composed with this panache.

AR Rahman croons the song with a western feel that makes it more effectual and no other singers would have done justice to this track other than him.

Perhaps, it sounds like this was a composition that AR Rahman had stored in his bank for a Hollywood project. The fast-running lines might first sound to be little difficult to get the words, but soon you get drawn into it. Javed Ali renders his voice for few fill-in portions. The lead played guitar and chords stroked with mild rhythm in ‘Country’ style makes you hear it over and again. Madhan Karky has penned the song and it’s completely off youthful feel.

Harini will have her name registered in the nominees list of 2012 Best Female Singers… The mild chords over the box guitars and silent strings running along with the singers are awe-inspiring.

The song has been on its peak of mountainous reach from the time it was premiered on MTV Unplugged with Rahman and Shakthishree Gopalan performing it LIVE… A marvellous orchestration of flutes, percussions, violins, strings and accordion with a new discovery of Rahman – Shakthishree making a stunning performance that beautifies this track. Shakthishree Gopalan makes it clear that she is the new princess of voice in Tamil Nadu now.

ANBIN VAASALE – WORSHIP TO THE ALMIGHTY
Vocals: Haricharan
Lyrics: Madhan Karky

A spiritual retreat by Rahman… Crooned by Haricharan, Madhan Karky has written the lyrical lines in praise of Lord Jesus.

Chinmayee renders few lines of dialogues, which encompasses the powerful realms of the girl as she says – Naa Magudi Da, Nee Paambu… The lyrical lines by Aryan Dinesh Kanagarathnam and his rendition of rap lines send you crazy.

Having made a comeback in Tamil music industry nearly after a couple of years, KADAL is a special gift for AR Rahman fans.

Verdict: You cannot stay away from falling in love with it. That’s the Magic of AR Rahman.

Music Review- Kadal
Posted on December 15, 2012
Presenting, an absolutely biased, extremely one sided review of the music of Kadal

Adiye

A.R.Rahman on the piano and the new kid on the block, Sid Sriram open this track. Folk lyrics take an RnB twist, with Maria Roe Vincent’s sensuous harmonies forming the foundation of a song that will simply blow you away. These are difficult times for a Rahman fan. To express restraint and not let the savage fan boy in him wreak verbal havoc with praise.

Chithirai Nila

Looks like A.R.Rahman decided to put to rest every other self proclaimed music critic’s claim that he’s lost the 90′s touch. The strains of what sounds like the Sarangi in the opening and the flute-like synth underlining the arrangements throughout complement the beauty of a solid melody. Actually the flute-synth sounds more like one of those stick-shaft type flutes you’d buy at the beach, in which when you move the shaft, the notes change. The tempo change midway is a pleasant transition into a rousing crescendo. This is vintage ARR, and as Vijay Yesudas goes Nalaiyai Thirandhal Nambikkai Sirikkum you actually feel hope surge through your soul. Much needed.

Moongil Thottam

A typical minor-relative major interplay a la munbe vaa, Moongil Thottam is yet another masterpiece. Towards the middle of the song, the strings interlude elevates the song to a new heavenly plane. Harini and Abhay Jodhpurkar do a fabulous job with the singing. No prominent autotune… My prayers have been answered.

Anbin Vaasale

Haricharan finally gets his due with his first Rahman song showcasing his vocal prowess like never before. It doesn’t matter what religion you follow, when Rahman composes a devotional song, your faith is sure to be reinforced. Like a friend of mine puts it, “Rahman is an example of how to use religion for all the right reasons”. Chennai Chorale and the grandiose western classical backing tug at your heart strings.

Magudi Magudi

What starts of like a Tavil based dubstep track quickly moves into a sprightly dance song with some badass programming. I’m not sure I like the vocals or whatever little there is of it. Probably the weakest link in the album

Omitting Elay Keechan and Nenjukkulle here as I frankly don’t know what more to write that would be different from my previous posts on these two songs.

Kadal is unadulterated, blissful A.R.Rahman. I’m finding it hard to summarize and articulate how I’m feeling right now, having heard each of these tracks many times over today.

Music Review: Kadal

And the magicians are back! Music genius A.R. Rahman gives his best for a Mani Ratnam and Kadal is nothing less than a musical treat. The duo has once again taken Tamil film music to the next level. Here we take a look...
The album begins with the soft and serene 'Chitirai Neela' rendered in the soulful voice of Vijay Yesudas. Vairamuthu's magical words have further uprised the emotions. This song is about a new born baby's cry... Then comes the gospel-styled 'Adiye' sung by Sid Sriram. Madhan Karky's lyrics are soulful and Rahman gives a new touch to this choir like track. Abhay Jodhpurkar and Harini have rendered the soft haunting melody 'Moongil Thottam' with supreme confidence while the man himself, Rahman, has sung the mond blowing 'Elay Keechan' which takes music to next level. Nobody expect Rahamn could think of adding such elegance to this country styled fishermen track.
And finally here we have the whimsical 'Nenjukkule' sung by A.R. Rahman and Shakthisree Gopalan. This song, which was premiered at the MTV Unplugged, is already a viral hit. It is pure magic indeed. Rahman has roped in Chennai Chorale for the choir-ish 'Anbin Vaasale' crooned by Haricharan. The album ends with the refreshing 'Magudi Magudi' in the electrifying voices of Aaryan Dinesh, Chinmayee and Tanvi Shah.
Mani Ratnam-Rahman never fails, and we agree that. This album is a pure magic.

Review: A R Rahman delivers with Kadal soundtrack

Pavithra Srinivasan feels the music of Tamil film Kadal offers a truly beautiful listening experience.

One of this year's most highly anticipated music albums is finally here, advanced by a couple of days due to phenomenal public demand.

This is unsurprising, as Madras Talkies' Kadal, brings back the much-revered combination of director Mani Ratnam and composer A R Rahman [ Images ], not to mention the lyricist duo, Vairamuthu and Karky.

With Gautam and Thulasi joining hands for the first time on the big screen, the movie is eagerly anticipated.

A listen to the songs:

A newborn's plaintive cry begins Chithirai Nila, a pleasant song with the vocals gaining more importance. Rendered by Vijay Yesudas, it is a sort of conversation with an infant, a promise of life to come.

The lyrics are invigorating and are its true charm, for this is a rather familiar number, and seems to be a template A R Rahman has used often. It reminds you of his earlier compositions.

In many ways, Adiye takes you by surprise with the audacity with which it shifts genres. Sid Sriram transplants the Tamil lyrics brilliantly into what seems almost a Blues setting. It's a fantastic number that transcends the usual.

The instrumental arrangement, not to mention Sid Sriram's voice, reverberating with emotion, and the jazz vocals by Maria Roe Vincent add depth. A genuine classic.

Gentle guitar strings (courtesy George Doering and Keba Jeremiah) combine anguish and happiness in Moongil Thottam, rendered by Abhay Jodhpurkar and Harini.

Sekar's cello adds beauty to the sweeping melody as well. The lyrics, again, form the biggest attraction here, though they stumble a little trying to fit into the distinctly western milieu. It should be interesting to see how this number is picturised.

Eley Keechan begins with much enthusiasm, and once again, George Doering's peppy guitar strings blend with A R Rahman's voice. The country-western air is a nice departure from the mandatory kuthu pattu tracks and surprises with how well Tamil lyrics adapt to an alien setting. A very pleasant listen.

Keba Jeremiah's guitar strings provide a soothing prelude to Shakthishree Gopalan's rendition of Nenjukkulle Vairamuthu's lyrics, drenched in local flavour, though the slightly western twang makes it slightly difficult to get into the mood of the number.

However, that's just the beginning; the instrumental arrangement, and the charanam elevate this number from just another composition ably assisted by Naveen Iyer's flute. A truly fascinating number.

Haricharan's fluid voice which begins Anbin Vaasale fairly throbs with emotion as church bells toll, and a chorus raises its voice with divine fervour, rendered by Chennai Chorale. There's an almost otherworldly lilt to the words that makes it more than just another devotional number. The gentle way it finishes adds to its charm.

If anything, it's Magudi, rendered by Aaryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam, Chinmayi and Tanvi Shah that seems rather tailor-made, meant to fit in with the formula for a fast-paced number. Except for Chinmayi's rather haunting words, there's nothing new here.

It's been said that A R Rahman always delivers his very best for Mani Ratnam. It looks like it with Kadal, where the composer experiments and runs riot with different styles with some success.

It now remains to be seen just how the veteran film-maker picturises these intriguing numbers, and more importantly, how he will fit them into a uniquely Tamil setting.

With Adiye and Nenjukkulle, Moongil Thottam and Anbin Vaasale, Kadal offers a truly beautiful listening experience. Go for it.

Moongil Thottam - Song Lyrics and Translation

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/9746/bamboogarden.jpg

This song is a prayer, I've printed the above picture and put it on my wall so that I see it all the time. Rahman Ji has truly outdone himself, I thought it would be a difficult task for him to overcome "Mel Isaiyae" but I now stand corrected. I love this composition and sir, I have no worlds to express my gratitude... All I can do is admire and worship you. I must have done some good deeds in my life to hear such a song like this and sir, you must have noticed this and therefore have acknowledged this with the composition of "Moongil Thottam". I am so emotionally overwhelmed right now and I am more than happy to stay in this zone for ever! :cry2:

then it doesn make any sense... does he have any explanation?

Why doesn't it make sense? It is a metaphor that the path is not a smooth surface. The equipment used for pallangkuzhi game is with holes and not smooth. This is a very straight forward metaphor. I dont understand the confusion.

I wish all the songs penned by VM instead of sharing some with Karky. To me, the lyric should emote some amount of depth even read in plain paper without the sandham of song. That's the place VM scores high. His words screen virtual images in us and paint with various color of moods. In my understanding, Karky concentrates more on Edhugai-Monai structure. Let time and experience will shape Karky well.

Kadal is a great album. Every song is unique and catchy with the first listen itself.

Adiyae, Keecha, Magudi has been in the loop forever now from the time I got my ears in this album.

Great going ARR even after 20 years with same freshness in every tune is revolutionary.

Daddy is always Daddy, there's no doubt about it. That flow, word play, depth, metaphors, perfect matching of syllables even for the most difficult and complicated tunes - today and always he is the best and I dont think there will ever be any replacements for him. Karky is not a match at all to his father and has got a long way to go. But he is very promising compared to other contemporary present generation lyricists. He puts in a lot of effort, tries best to do something different, has got his own style which has certainly struck a chord among the youngsters. He has a bright future as a lyricist. As Maddy rightly put he is the 'tiger cub'.

I think 'Kadal' is AR Rahman's best album in recent times: Sreedhar Pillai

Senior film journalist Sreedhar Pillai joined IBNLive readers for an interaction on the music composed by AR Rahman for Tamil film 'Kadal'.

Q. Sir, how about Telugu version of 'Kadal' audio, is it already released simultaneously with Tamil? Asked by: M.Z Ahmed

A. I think it will be launched shortly.

Q. Why Rahman takes much time to compose music for movies? He hardly compose 2-3 movies a year, what else keeps him occupied? Asked by: Vinod

A. His international commitments, music school, endorsements etc.

Q. In this digital and I tune generation, will music companies make money from albums? Asked by: VKT

A. Most music companies will stop manufacturing CD, as physical sales are negligible. But they will make money from digital.

Q. AR Rahman always stores best for Mani sir, he's proved it again for 'Kadal'. So what is the basic plot of this movie? Asked by: Zareef Ahmed

A. It looks a love story set in a fishing hamlet in southern most part of India, where also fishermen go out into the sea and disappear!

Q. I heard one song "Nenjukulle", its fresh and pleasent, is Rahman back in form, or this is obvious in Mani and AR combo? Asked by: Vinodkumar Thangaraj

A. Mani & ARR have always given us fresh invigorating music.

Q. Why big directors alone going to AR Rahman to compose music for their film, why not others? Asked by: Kirubakaran

A. Every music director has a certain comfort level with a director that is build over years. A new director may not have that kind of vibes.

Q. Mani & Raja sir had long relationship, like Mani & AR. Will Mani come out of AR and look for fresh and established composer in future? Asked by: VKT

A. For the last 20 years he has been having a musical relationship with ARR, and I think it will continue.

Q. Don't you think Harris Jayaraj has over taken A R Rahman in Tamil industry. Since Rahman is not doing more tamil films. Asked by: Prashanth

A. I don't think so.

Q. Whether the movie will release for pongal or not? Asked by: Kirubakaran

A. 'Kadal' is likely to release only for Valentine weekend (Feb 14) as producers Gemini Film Circuit is having MGR 4 release during Pongal.

Q. Do you really consider ths album from Rahman as his best in his recent time? Because I feel that Rahman's magical touch has gone. Asked by: Magi

A. I definitely think it is ARR's best in recent times, the magic is very much there!

Q. Who according to you is next best to Rahman in Tamil industry? Asked by: Praveen

A. Tamil cinema has a lot of young music directors who are making waves at the moment. All of them are good.

Q. Which song you like the most? Asked by: Kirubakaran

A. My favourite - Eley Keechan & Nenjukkulle followed by Moongil Thottam.

Q. 'Kadal' songs can top in award listing of current year? Asked by: Vinodkumar Thangaraj

A. I think national awards are given depending on year of censorship. If Mani Ratnam censors the film before Dec 31, 2012, yes it can be nominated.

Q. Has 'Kadal' audio rights has been fetched by Sony Music for a higher price than NEP? Asked by: Prasad

A. Nearly three times NEP price. Remember one of the co-producer of Kadal is Gemini Film Circuit who have their own audio company, still they sold it to Sony due to whopping price offered.

Q. I heard 'Kadal' songs. I feel we have lost AR Rahman to the west. What do you think? Asked by: vasantharaj

A. I think 'Kadal' is ARR's best album in recent times. His roots are in Tamil music and his priority will be here.

Q. Do you think 'Kadal' movie will bring a great carrier for Gautham and Thulasi Nair...? Asked by: Kirubakaran

A. Why not? Both are chip of the old block. Gautham's dad Karthik is one of the finest actors, while Radha, Thulasi mom was Heroine number 1 in the 80's. So everything is there for a great career ahead.

Q. Why is that ARR and Mani combination work 100% and that's not the case with other ARR comination..Is that ARR is simply loyal to Mani as a tribute to someone who introduced ARR into Indian cinema? Asked by: Paresh UAE

A. ARR-Mani for me is one of the best combos in Indian cinema like Raj Kapoor -Shankar Jaikishan or Dev Anand - SD/RD Burman's combo. ARR-Mani is perfectly in tune with each other, as Rahman understands what Mani wants 4 his film. ARR-Shankar is also a very successful combo.

Q. Did Rahman compose 'Kadal' songs in Chennai or LA? Is his way of composing songs in abroad, absence of director in studio while composing songs have made his songs not upto the mark or it has no difference? Asked by: VKT

A. From what I have heard Rahman and Mani Ratnam went on a boat ride in coastal Tamil Nadu and got the feel and touch of the tunes. All Kadal songs have been composed in India.

Q. Were you able to make out the story of the 'Kadal' listening to songs (Lyrics). Asked by: Vinodkumar Thangaraj

A. I think the lyrics tell a lot about the love and anguish faced by fisher folks and the influence of the catholic church. Lyrically, 'Kadal' is a beauty thanks to Vairamuthu and his son Madhan Karky.

Q. Can we listen 'Kadal' songs in Hindi (dubbed version or remake)? Asked by: Adhitya

A. As of now the film is releasing only in Tamil and Telugu. I think the film is seeped in local south Tamil Nadu nativity. If it is successful in south may b a Hindi dubbing.

Q. Do you think 'Kadal' has taken the Tamil film music to the next level? Asked by: Sathish

A. 'Kadal' has definitely taken Tamil music 2 the next level. It's vintage Rahman.

nice review by arryg fan adiye song

For someone who does not have any technical knowledge of music but finds great solace and satisfaction in listening to ARR's music, what is the perfect song of his? Is it when ARR composes a chartbuster or a hitherto unheard sound or a song which gives us that adrenaline gushing sensation? I don't think so. Those give immense pleasure, satisfaction and a sense of hyperbole happiness to the lay listener. But they may not be the perfect song. I guess not many will disagree; it is when three key components – the composition, the lyrics and the rendition, fall in place in precision that the perfect song is formed. Adiye from Kadal to me is that perfect song from ARR.

Before the 14th of December, when I first knew that one of the songs in Kadal will be "Adiye, enne enge nee kooti pore" I thought that with that kind of opening lines the song may be something in the lines of "Rukmani" from Roja or "Maduraiki Pogathadi" from ATM .Then I read somewhere that the someone had tweeted saying that she is listening to the song in repeat mode. I thought may be then the song may not be what I thought it would be but it may be something like "phir se ud chala" or "hava hava" from Rockstar. I then stopped imagining how the song will turn out and thought its best to wait. Having known how ARR surprises all of us with what he offers, there was no point imagining. I just waited.

I heard the song for the first time on 14th evening. It very pleasantly reminded me of Aaromale and I was not complaining.

Now I have heard Adiye enough number of times and I think I have found that perfect song from ARR. There may definitely be many others which are perfect (where all three key components aptly fall in place) but I am so overwhelmed with this one at present that I don't even want to think of whether there are other such perfect songs and which are those.

The team of ARR, Karky and Sid Sriram (sorry for leaving out the rest of team) have nailed this one. We have heard about batsmen being in that "zone" when being in the form of their life. It is as if for Adiye, each one them were in their respective zones when doing their parts and also when it all came together.

Coming back to the evening of 14th Dec. when I heard Adiye for the first time, even in the first listen I noticed (heard) the voice singing the song, which is not usually the case as normally I hear only ARR's music during the first few listens. I don't know why I noticed Sid Sriram's voice. Was it because the song reminded me of Aaromale and I was trying to see if the singer has done as good a job as Alphonse had in Aaromale. I still don't know why? When it is ARR's music, during the first few listening I don't care much for the voice that is singing it (there are a very few exceptions) nor do I follow much of the lyrics. Normally, I start noticing the singer and following the lyrics only after I have satiated myself with the music. The reason being simple - the initial anticipation associated with any ARR song. With Adiye even during the second or third listen I was closely following the lyrics.

In Adiye Karky's imaginative poetry is spellbinding. It's a song of admiration for the girl by a hopeless lover. But the way Karky expresses it is just `wow'. It depicts anguish filled reverence which the guy has for the girl when he sings the lines "meene thooki rekke varanje……….., engerinthu vandaayo nee" and more reverence this time with self-pity in the lines –"Kannale Kannadi senju , en achathe kaaturiye ………… ullam vellai adikuriye". And the lines "Sorgam vittu bhoomi vandhaal, meendum kizhakil sooriyan vandhaal, naan vizhichu paakayile, kalanji povaayo ni" conveys hope, desperation, anticipation and witlessness. Hats off to Karky for coming up with such a beauty.

I fear Sid Sriram has already sung his best song. I doubt if anyone will come up with a better one for him in the future. What singing and what control. The emotions which Karky expresses in this poetry are so amazingly conveyed by Sid. The way his sings the whole song is brilliant and flawless. Especially the last stanza –"sorgam vittu ………" leaves me in a trance each time I listen Sid sing it. And kudos to ARR for having given this song to a new comer. Don't think anyone else could have pulled this one off the way Sid has done.

ARR has kept this one unconventional but really simple. You can follow the lyrics and the singing and the music does not try to compete with or surpass either. The Adiye Adiye bit which repeats through the song is so heavenly and addictive that I wonder if I am in prayer. Don't have enough words to thank ARR for this one.

Thanks to Mani, ARR, Karky and Sid Sriram, I have found my perfect song.

Thanks for reading.

"Elay Keechan" projects Rahman Ji's innocent voice last heard in "Urvasi Urvasi". "Kadal" is certainly a time machine but at the same time we are lucky to hear new forms compositions like "Moongil Thottam". "Moongil Thottam" is composed on a Triple=3 beats per bar, the beat comes in halfway through the second "anupallavi" and the overall tempo is 65 beats per minute. It has minimalistic instruments and has a zero synth quotient. All instruments are acoustic. There are composers who can't give decent songs in your bog standard 4 beats per bar and then you have Rahman Ji who is producing fine gems on 3 beats per bar.

KADAL music review: It is a veritable orgy for music lovers!

Seldom does a project in the Indian film industry hold more stead than an AR Rahman-Mani Ratnam venture. Hence the anticipation from Kadal (sea) was immense
When we heard that the audio launch was preponed by two days to meet the heavy pre-order rush, we knew there was a magical Christmas gift in the offing. AR Rahman has always reserved his best for Mani Ratnam, and the latter makes sure his sequences weave magic onscreen with the music. Some attribute the brilliant music to the camaraderie AR and Mani share.

As the title suggests, Kadal is a film that revolves around the sea. With such a philosophical element involved, the music production team had its work cut out. To supersede previous albums would always be a task. The album consists of seven tracks. On first listening, it is a journey that takes you through different emotions without hitting a plateau, touching different genres while at it. Almost all the tracks merit repeated listening.

Chithirai nila

Sung by Vijay Yesudas, this song gives a vintage Rahman feel. A composition which revives memories of Tu bin bataye (Rang De Basanti). The glorious chord-play accompanied by the deep Yesudas voice, this song gradually injects venom into you. It ebbs and flows in a succinct manner. Lyrics by Vairamuthu are situational and powerful. Rahman’s penchant for detail can be seen in the opening which is a child crying. This probably is a song post child-birth, but it’s also a plea to the skies above. It deserves repeated listening.

Adiye

This track is allegedly the first Blues track from the Indian film industry. Catchy and contemporary lyrics by Madhan Karky (son of Vairamuthu) are effortlessly sung by Sid Sriram and jazz vocals by MariaRoe Vincent. US based Sid Sriram, another Rahman find, makes the song his own. Drafting a jazz based track into a commercial album is always a risk in India, especially in a regional language, but this song never alienates you. It immerses you in a new genre almost immediately and manages to stay true to its roots. This is the Rehna Tu of this album.

Elay keechan

This song can drown out your sorrows. Catchy bluegrass riffs, raw percussions and voice of the Isai Puyal are recipe for a chart topper. The Itunes (India) chart reflects that effectively. The song in essence, the ‘sea’ song, has lyrics by Madhan Karky. It takes you seaside, puts you in a boat and gives you a rowing (sic) experience. It will surely have a lot of folk dances choreographed to it.

Moongil thottam

This is the ‘dawns on you’ track from the Rahman album. Give it three-four listens and the song will never leave its vice-like grip. Sung by Abhay Jodhpukar and Harini (after a long time) to breezy lyrics by Vairamuthu, it is for the romantic, redolent of VTV (Vinnaithandi Varuvaya) .The phrase Idhu podhum ennaku, idhu podhume, verenne vennum nee podhumey packages the song in two lines and you’ll be singing it for a long time. This duet plays symphony with your heart.

Anbin vasale

Lyrics by Madhan Karky, sung by Haricharan, choir by Chennai Chorale group – This is a Christian hymn with an orchestra. Probably a church song. There’s nothing extraordinary to write home about this track .It just dutifully serves the purpose and would be in the playlist of people who love the classical orchestra arrangement and songs with distinct opulence.

Nenjukulle

Nenjukulle was the first track of the album that came out and was accepted wholeheartedly by people irrespective of language. Sung by Shaktishree Gopalan and AR Rahman, and lyrics by Vairamuthu, it has a lilting melody with Spanish guitar like riffs. The arrangement is trademark Rahman and his voice as the male vocalist in this duet is the icing on the cake. This song avowedly has the best lyrics in the album.

Magudi magdi

This song completes the commercial environment of the album. The digital track in the album is different because of the lack of acoustic elements but nonetheless a decent track. Magudi Magudi is a fast paced electronic track; might not be widely accepted but a treat for electro music lovers. The focus is clearly on the music here.

This album is a veritable orgy for music lovers and caters to a widespread audience. The sounds of vintage Rahman warm your heart and create hope for future albums. It becomes increasingly difficult not to sound like a Rahman fanboy when writing a review for his album, but the line between a critic and a Rahman fan is all, but thin.

The album deserves a 4/5 for its sheer expression and courage along with the commercial appeal.

TALE OF TWO AUDIO BLOCKBUSTERS - KADAL & ETHIR NEECHAL

There has been a total change in the way music is being consumed now. Gone are the days when people used to queue up to buy cassettes and CDs. Now, majority of the music is being downloaded or streamed online thanks to the proliferation of music boxes on YouTube. With this introduction, we do a quick ‘dekho’ at the outstanding Tamil music albums of the year with specific focus on two albums which released just a few weeks back.

The Tamil music scene in 2012 has been quite a healthy one with majority of the hotshot composers raking up one hit after the other. Albums like Nanban, OKOK, Maattrraan, Billa 2, Neethane En Ponvasantham, Thuppakki, Podaa Podi and Kumki have managed to put up decent CD sales figures as well as countless hits and downloads digitally. Songs from these movies have found a place in countdown charts on TV, online and in the various FM stations.

With listeners having a good time with such a plethora of albums, two albums came towards the end of the year. Both the albums had fair bit of hype for various reasons. Both the albums were bagged by Sony Music and the way the music was promoted and reached among the audience was impressive.

While one had the Mani Ratnam – A.R.Rahman combo the other had the much raved Kolaveri duo Dhanush - Anirudh joining hands again. Yes, we are talking about Kadal and Ethir Neechal. Listeners lapped up both the albums like hot cakes and Sony Music had reasons to smile gleefully.

Thousands of CDs were pre-booked in the case of Kadal and the music was launched two days prior to the actual planned date. The songs which were launched on a phased basis like Nenjukkule and Elay Keechan made listeners visit heaven even if only for a short while. Heeding to the advance booking response, the full music was launched in advance and the rest of the songs have also slowly started making an imprint on listeners’ minds. Adiye, being a much spoken about track, for being something totally unheard in Tamil music till now. Rahman being Rahman, iTunes charts were also stormed by Kadal.

Ethir Neechal on the other hand is a peppy and youthful soundtrack which has been composed by Anirudh after the phenomenal success of 3 earlier in the year. There is nothing experimental or unique about the sound of Ethir Neechal but the youth aren’t complaining one bit. Anirudh being a 22 year old perfectly knew what listeners of his age would enjoy. The result is some really enjoyable numbers like Boomi Enna Suthudhe, Ethir Neechal, Local Boys and Nijamellam.

Both these albums are vying for the top slot in the music charts and they have come as a whiff of fresh air in the Tamil music scene. The sales charts look that much better thanks to these albums and we are sure that 2013 would be peppered with tracks from these two films.

This is what composer Anirudh had to say about the response to his music in Ethir Neechal and also about Kadal.

“I was thrilled as well as tense when I was thinking about the release of Ethir Neechal’s music. Now I am very happy as my music has been able to stand out despite the intense competition from so many other new releases. I am thankful to listeners for making my entire album a success, rather than just a couple of songs.

There are comparisons with my earlier work for 3 but I must say that both are different films. 3 was a tragic love story while Ethir Neechal is a fun filled entertainer. My music for both these films is different and in tune with the requirements of the movie. Ethir Neechal’s music is not too serious but peppy and enjoyable. My age was a big advantage when it came to Ethir Neechal’s music as I knew what the youth would enjoy.

A.R.Rahman Sir is my big inspiration and I actually feel honored that my album and his Kadal released around the same time. Kadal has its own audience and please don’t compare our work. It won’t sound right if I even talk about my film’s music in the same breath as Kadal. I am just happy that my film’s music has also worked. This only proves that music has no boundaries and that people would listen to anything that makes them happy.”

We wish both the composers the very best in the coming years. While Rahman is a proven phenomenon who just keeps getting better and better with every passing year, Anirudh has proved that he isn’t a one film wonder. He is here to stay, folks.

Kadal Music Review

Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman – The duo that has created some of the most impactful soundtracks of all time in Indian cinema returns once again for a Tamil project – Kadal (Sea). Any AR Rahman - Mani Ratnam project always evokes much curiosity and expectation due to their tremendous track record together of engineering musical products that have reached far and deep into many hearts all over India and beyond, and which continue to be referenced as high quality musical benchmarks.

So, what is it about their combination that motivates or inspires AR Rahman to forge high level creativity and musical refinement that elicits immense intellectual and emotional satisfaction from the listener? Time and again, we have noticed that when Rahman is given the right space and platform for free flowing artistic avenues, he usually delivers a very fine product. With certain directors who enable that type of creative freedom, Rahman's products seem to bristle with soaring musical genius that are now often considered classics……not only with Mani Ratnam, but with other notable directors like Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Shankar, etc. However, the tag line that is often repeated is that AR Rahman gives his best to Mani. He seems to provide Rahman just the right amount of creative space, inspiration and mentorship to turn on all musical cylinders to full throttle. Rahman has been quoted as saying that he considers Mani Ratnam like a family member and that their relationship plays a very important role in his creative process. I do think that the depth and longevity of their relationship allows Rahman to be at ease during the creative process. I think that Rahman is the type of person who thrives on positive relationships and personalities that elicit a certain high level of interpersonal comfort and rapport in order for him to be just totally himself, which then allows him to be very free flowing with his imagination and creative juices. For some composers, that variable may not be so important, but for Rahman, I think it is, esp. given the high potential for immense creative output.

However, despite their overall grand and royal track record, I must admit their last three outings in Raavan/Raavanan, Guru, and Yuva/Ayutha Ezhuthu were not amongst their best creations in my opinion. I was left with lingering disappointment with all three albums. Sure, all three had some outstanding numbers, but to me, l felt overall lacking as whole album masterpieces. Each of these albums to me felt too inconsistent in quality, or at least what I consider consistent, high level quality from start to finish from their past benchmarks like Roja, Bombay, Dil Se, Alaipayuthey/Saathiya, Kannathil Muthumittal, Iruvar, etc.

Since Yuva/Ayutha Ezhuthu in 2004, I felt that Mani Ratnam wanted to explore other varied and adventurous scripts, which I respect and appreciate from an artistic standpoint. He wanted to branch out as a film maker and experiment. However, in the process, Rahman too had to create music that matched the varied subject matter. The stylistic and sonic range of Rahman's music increased as he explored different genres, but I felt the overall quality got diluted somewhat as well with some notable exceptions. For example, the tracks Tere Bina, Aye Hairathe Aashiqui and Jaage from Guru are absolute delights with evergreen melodies. However, tracks like Baazi Laga and Ek Lo Ek Muft from the same album left much to be desired for me for their relatively flat and uninspired melodies and musical arrangements. Raavan had the epic and haunting Behene De and enrapturing, pulsating Ranjha Ranjha, but fell short with tracks like the too condensed and to the point Beera and the too unrefined folk number, Kata Kata. Yuva had sweetness and spunk in Kabhi Neem Neem and pathbreaking, high octane techno jazz in Aye Khuda Hafiz, but the melodic flatness of Badal and once again, the loud roughness of Dhaka Laga Buka didn't hook me in.

So, now with the music of Kadal, my hope is that the duo return to a consistent, high quality musical form that I expect from them without having tracks that tempt the skip button. Do they deliver?

1) Chittirai Nila – The opening cries of a baby inform me of a lullaby about to unfold and the smooth and deep voice of Vijay Yesudas lead me gently into a very soothing and soulful atmosphere, textured by Rahman's warm pad chords. A song about a father talking to his newborn child about hope and love, the music by itself speaks of deep sentiments and open hearts. Add a few seconds of Sarangi with minimal arrangements, and boy, you've got my interest and how! Flashbacks of Rahman songs from the 1990s trickle through my memory cells with the gentle and minimalistic arrangements and spacious ambience that is beautifully crafted, a type of sound and effect he used to emphasize a lot more in his earlier days than he does today. The song proceeds with smoothness and grace, and with seamlessly shifting rhythmic patterns after several measures, never once are you bored or tempted to drift. Rahman uses a very sweet pan flute sound here and there for emotional nuance, which might be the continuum instrument that he occasionally employs to imbibe a spiritual and Indian classical emphasis from its pitch bending, microtonal footnote, but surely conveys a feeling of innocence and tenderness. The final, more upbeat groove of the track with added strings, rhythms, and the majestic choral lines transforms this track from a tender lullaby into a soaring, majestic, spiritual anthem. My only wish is that the song went on a few more bars to give me a feeling of a more complete resolution and finale. One of my very favorites from this album and one of the most beautiful and inspirational opening tracks from any AR Rahman album.

2) Adiye - The opening brief piano jazz chord definitely tells me that Rahman is up to something very creatively interesting here, almost a naughty gesture of "aha, now you'll see what I've got up my sleeve!". A huge genre and mood shift, the album blazes forward with a track that is quite bold and quite forward, but quite amazing. Gospel style defines this romantic track and Rahman truly extracts the very best out of singer Sid Sriram with his impeccable performance, which I'm sure he worked very hard to perfect. The choral harmonies with the jazz filled piano chords sing praises to Rahman's brilliance here, and not a brilliance of epic proportions, but a quality that gives the song such a tremendous charming character and personality. As much as I love this track, to me, perfection would have been achieved had there been even a brief musical interlude of solo piano playing without voice in the middle or end of the song to add some variety and dimension. Nonetheless, a song one can hardly fault, if one is open minded enough to appreciate this very genre specific number that is executed very authentically and with memorable impact. This is already a favorite among many ARR fans and I can see why.

3) Moongil Thottam - The beautiful, opening acoustic guitar arpeggios and serene ambiance signify another soothing, smooth, and tender track. Full of romance, touching and deep sentiments, and gentleness, this romantic duet is exactly the type of song I had hoped to hear in this album. It is a true beauty of a ballad full of dignity and with a chord sequence that gives you chills…..the good kind! You add melodic hooks and a very memorable and hummable tune overall, you know very well this song is going to loved far and wide. Singers Abhay Jodhpurkar and Harini offer their vocal talents with sincere performances. That moment of silence between the first interlude and the first stanza before Harini sings……ahh…perfectly executed and what an amazing impact that is hard to describe with words. The hallmark of a genius composer for me is not only knowing when to pour it on, but when to turn it off, and timing is everything! The second interlude captures my attention the most with its dreamy soundscapes dotted by harps, strings, piano, accordion, as you're just whisked away to a very soft and warm place that you don't want to leave. I do wish the song went on a little longer, just like the first track, but that's the problem with great songs: at some point, they have to end!

4) Elay Keechan – Switching gears once again, we enter another very genre specific number here, but with more fusion elements. I frankly have never heard country style music mixed with African and Caribbean elements into a seamless, coherent whole before. Well, this is indeed a first time juxtaposition that I can remember, and Rahman shows us an example of why his music has reached global heights and why he is truly a global composer, not just an Indian MD. Sung by Rahman himself, it's a track that flows very well and carries a spirit of free flowing frolic and uplifting vibes. He chose this track himself to sing, probably because he had so much fun with it. The rhythms are added with crispness by the quarter note claps and once again, the vocal harmonies take a prominent role in the musical mix. The song ends very gracefully and brightly, fading out with only a single note high pitched guitar arpeggio remaining, a very classy touch!

5) Nenjukulle – We all were first introduced to a glimpse of Kadal's music with this song, which played on MTV unplugged two months before the actual audio released. The audio and video of this song were a huge hit, went viral on the net, and set quite high expectations for the rest of the album. Sung very well by relative newcomer Shaktishree Gopalan, the album version boasts of more pronounced rhythms and added instruments like flute. However, over time, I have begun to prefer the MTV version, which featured a more beautiful and elaborated intro and ending, and with deeper sentiment as Rahman's accordion makes its old world charm sound much more prominent. In both versions, the melodies and harmonies are the same and it's a song that has become a favorite of many, and understandably so by its unyielding grace, smoothness, and melody that you can never forget. I think it's one of the most beautiful melodies from an ARR-Mani Ratnam album and I can never really tire of hearing this number, esp. with two versions in hand! The sentiment of a girl not being able to truly express in words what is in her heart is communicated just beautifully through the melody and chord progressions. Without even knowing a word of Tamil, one gets a sense that it is a romantic number of attempted expression of love, self consciousness, and mild shyness. Rahman has always demonstrated the gifted ability to communicate subtle and refined emotions through music very convincingly and sincerely. Acoustic guitar, strings, accordion and light percussion predominate and Rahman demonstrates once again how he can do so much with so little. Once again, just like the other two songs earlier, we are treated to soothing sounds, smooth melodies, and light, spacious, acoustic arrangements.

6) Anbil Vassale – This track took some time to warm up given its unconventional mode and emphasis on vocal harmonies almost exclusively, but once it sank in, the experience became much more pleasant. Rahman has created numbers like this before, heavy on philharmonic sounds and choral textures, and in this track with its Christian significance, the music surely conveys that religious tone, even with patriotic flavors at times. Given the Christian backdrop of the storyline in the film, a song like this would make perfect sense. Sung by Haricharan, the melody and chords do stay with you after some repeated listens. The track has the potential to be loved more universally if picturized well, though its high class niche genre appeal may limit that to an extent. The beautiful chimes add brightness and majesty to this lush track for sure. A very classy number without a doubt. The ending with only vocal harmonies with smooth and minimal strings, slowed down and elaborated, is very appealing and ends the song very gracefully and soothingly, one of my favorite parts of the whole album.

7) Magudi Magudi – I'll be honest, when I first heard this track, I cringed a bit. I thought it was going to be one of those skip worthy tracks like Pappu from Jaane Tu and Latoo from Ghajini and Shano from Yuvraaj. However, after just 2-3 listens, something about this track hooked me in that elevated it much above the few ordinary techno numbers that ARR churned out before. This track has been described to belong to the "dubstep" category, though some have argued it's not exactly in that genre. Well, whatever it is, it's a highly addictive and pulsating trance type number with suspenseful chord progressions, a very dance friendly rhythm, and vocal acrobatics and gimmicks. Chinmayi's few word liners in between somehow reminded me of some tracks from Enigma, but only vaguely so. To me, it's arguably one of the best electronic dance numbers that ARR has ever come out with, though on the short side and would have benefitted from another minute of hypnotic psychedelics. Rahman could have really "freaked out" with this number had he wanted to, adding more sonic layers and doing an extended outro and I get the feeling most of his fans wouldn't have minded! This type of track was quite unexpected and sort of out of the album's predominantly acoustic oriented personality, but hey, leave it to Rahman to always surprise and go against the usual grain. I'm glad he didn't simply remix one of the earlier numbers and just throw it in there as a dispensable track, as so often Indian film composers do these days. Despite being the odd man out, this highly experimental number works, esp. for the cosmopolitan youth who are much more into these genres of music than the traditional Indian music lover would be.

So, this is indeed quite a musical journey from start to finish, exploring quite a range of musical genres, moods, and sounds. No doubt that the album bristles with colorful variety, so often as most AR Rahman albums do. As an album as a whole, to me, this is the most quality consistent and coherently packaged ARR – Mani Ratnam album since 2002's Kannathil Muthumittal. There is not one track I want to skip and each track stands out for its strong character and craft. It's also the most melodious and sonically pleasing album from the duo since then too, which to me is a great delight. Back are the smooth melodies, soft, acoustic instruments, spacious moments, and nuanced textures, and an album which is largely very soulful and spiritual. I get a strong, nostalgic flavor of Rahman of yore with this sweet package and though I could have been more satisfied had there been a bonus instrumental track and generally longer songs, I really can't complain much. Though this album to me holds up quite well against some of their earlier 1990s classic juggernauts, it seems to lack an "epic" quality in comparison to those benchmarked albums in my opinion. However, it most certainly classifies itself as their best creation in the past decade due to the highly artistically refined qualities of the music as a whole and for an overall sonic experience that is extremely soothing and warm. Overall, this album is indeed a career highlight for AR Rahman and another feather in his cap!

Kadal: Mostly Timeless

I haven’t written about music for a while now, and it isn’t surprising that the album that’s prompting me to do so is a Rahman soundtrack. Mani Ratnam's Kadal is his eleventh collaboration with the composer, and after the uneven Raavan, this is a return to form for the partnership that’s yielded Roja, Bombay and Dil Se. As far as Rahman is concerned, this is his best soundtrack since Delhi-6 back in 2009. For me personally, Kadal could not have come at a better time. It’s comforting to know that even though Sachin’s half-retired from cricket, Rahman continues to make fantastic music. Don’t ask me how the two are connected, but they are.

The music, then – and it’ll have to be just the music, because I speak no Tamil. Kadak opens with "Chithirai Nela", a bold choice, in that it’s a ballad and not very dramatic. It does have some nice singing by Vijay Yesudas, and Ranjit Barot’s percussion opens up the song a little in the latter half. If the opener’s a bit sedate, then track two, “Adiye”, is unlike anything I’ve heard by Rahman. With its rolling piano and churchy background vocals, it’s situated squarely in the gospel tradition, which has always been a part of Rahman’s music (remember “Mustafa Mustafa”?), but never front and centre. Sid Sriram’s vocal is powerful as hell, and thankfully free of melismas.
After “Moongil Thottam”, which has some nice harmonies, “Elay Keechan” announces itself with a shout, a simple, sunny guitar figure and two-part humming (why don’t songs have humming any more?). 'Kadal' means ‘sea’ in Tamil, and “Elay Keechan”, sung by Rahman himself, is apparently a variation on traditional fishing songs from the region. Even if it isn't, it hardly matters, because the song is really about freedom, the way that similarly unfettered Rahman songs like “Awara Bhawrein” and “Choti Si Asha” are about freedom. If there’s a classic on the album, it’s probably this.
“Nenjukkule”, more than any of the other tracks, made me wish I understood the lyrics. The words sound loving, but not untouched by humour – but perhaps I’m just describing the music (strumming, a tasteful string arrangement) and the unaffected singing of Shakthisree Gopalan. "Anbin Vaasale" is next, a stirring piece of chorus singing, rather like “Bharat Hum Ko Jaan Se Pyaara Hai” without the gloom (amusingly, the short lead vocal is by Haricharan, whom Wikipedia lists as ‘not to be confused with Hariharan’). The closer, “Magudi Magudi”, is the only song on the album that couldn’t have been made more than a few years back, with its EDM-y foundation and percussive rapping by Sri Lanka’s Aaryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam. (MIA should be stealing it sometime soon.) The rest of Kadal is mostly timeless – a quality that’s unfair to expect from anybody but AR Rahman.

I think,I can deviate from the topic a little bit. Anyway what happened to Sivamani???A.R.Rahman rarely uses him nowadays. Even he was used in only one song in Rockstar. I was expecting this combo in Kadal..Anyways Rahman is using his old friend Ranjit Barot a lot nowadays.Even for the Chennai concert, I heard Ranjit Barot was part of it..What happened to Sivamani??:-(

I have not been happy recently with songs from ARR in Hindi movies..
After Aaromale, was waiting for ARR to take me to a different level.. Adiyae just does that.. The best in the first hearing.. Had been an IR fan for a long time and still love him, but a music fan should appreciate this as much as anything, BOW my head to thee.. ARR, unimaginable.. NO MORE WORDS, just listen..

Adiye song is the coming together of Blues from the West, Tamil's Oppari & Christian Church Choir.

Very bold experimentation for a romantic number by ARR aided by Madan Karky's lyrics!

adhaan..on my first listen (Adiye and the accompanying rhythm), it reminded me of one of the most modern songs/albums of IR done 20+ yrs ago - Vaanam namakku veedhi from MR's Anjali, especially the rhythm and it's rejoinders . I used to wonder then as to why IR choose such a sloow (lazy) beat that may not be attractive to many, only to realize later that it perfectly reflected/synched with the children celebrating their lazy/relaxed Sunday morning, emoting the innocence+naughtiness!! Treatments of similar principle(s) I guess :), one sounding more 'Indian' and another more 'Western', as is the MDs preference. Not surprising that an (ex!) IR fan like MusicIsLife likes this very much :)
I can almost bet 'once upon a time my best director' MR picturizing this song in slow motion ;)

kodiyetha naatrida pirandhavan naan da

what does "dhiravida" mean? does it mean "Tamil"? because in the Sinhalese language tamil is referred to as "dhiravida"

I was partly right :) Seems like Aaryan Dinesh Kanakaratnam is referring to himself with some of his lyrics...

I have not been happy recently with songs from ARR in Hindi movies..
After Aaromale, was waiting for ARR to take me to a different level.. Adiyae just does that.. The best in the first hearing.. (not heard all the songs), but this song is the best westernization arrangement of a Tamil song.. people should learn from the genius.. i tell one more time, there is only one ARR. Had been an IR fan for a long time and still love him, but a music fan should appreciate this as much as anything, BOW my head to thee.. ARR, unimaginable.. NO MORE WORDS, just listen..

appadi podu aruvaala.......

and great point brigs - adiye being mix of blues+oppari+gospel music........but i think, if we consider vocals as tamil oppari then the blues go out - its more of gospel stuff only......

but my favourite still stands firm with the firm voice of shaktishree gopalan's in nenjukulle.....the song when it starts with guitar riffs backed by violins, u literally are made to feel like sitting in a boat.......thalaiva  ....and the chord progression is one of the most seamless i have heard in long time by AR.....rockstar had very complex progression - Aur ho, tum ko ellam nemba kashtam to follow....JHS songs like do nishaniyan had none  but with kadal, AR is back with the regular structures.......the charanams progression is in sync with the pallavis its melts back to pallavi after a brief crescendo..........touches of ballad here and there with a heavy MSV stamp - the accordion, violins and bass pattern is unmistakably athan enathan from paava mannippu

my favs as of now:

1. Nenjukkulle
2. Moongil thottam
3. Chithirai nela (takes me back to kangalil enna eeramo days of uzhavan and the scale change is magical)
4. Magudi (yes, pls hit me  but im a sucker for trance and when its served with some "soodana" thavil and church bell music, i cant simply refuse)
5. Adiye (the thump, "thee thee" of kadal, easily)
6. elay keechan (jolly)
7. anbin vaasalile (church choir is my other weakness)

Heroine looks 'BIG' - I think her sister Karthika looked much better. Gautham is very good looking. Much better than his father during AO days. He looks more like the father and the smile resembles his grandfather Muthuraman.

The nativity mafia would've found the trailer shocking. It doesn't look like a regular sea themed film. Rather looks like an action film.

A Month after “Kadal”

My order of preference now stands as:

1.Moongil Thottam

I could spend my whole life expressing endless praise for this beauty. Every time I hear it, I feel uplifted both romantically and spiritually. A song like this will definitely kill off any bad omen for sure and in times of stress and unfortunate mishappenings this is much highly required.

2.Nenjukkule

Just like “Moongil Thottam”, “Nenjukkule” is a full on acoustics galore fest. Is it fair to say Rahman Ji’s humming is one of the major repeat factors for this song? We often hear songs and we are transported to other places with different degrees of emotions but how many songs transport us back to our home or neighbourhood? Hearing “Nenjukkule” at home or anywhere with my eyes closed illustrates my house and my town with the only difference being the age i.e. memories of childhood running around my house, being playful, etc. Those who are away from home, family and friends may feel more satisfied hearing this. Home Sweet Home it is!

3.Chithirai Nela

This song has an unlimited scope for conjuring up imagery. Rahman Ji has definitely found an Unnikrishnan for himself in Vijay Yesudas. I’ll always be biased to the Ninties sound be it any composer. This song has a progression which in reality has progressed deep into my heart. It starts off simply and throughout the song Rahman Ji pours more and more magical elements which result in the song reaching a plateau of momentum. “Chithirai Nela” is the perfect lullaby which even after falling asleep won’t cease to ring in ones minds.

4.Elay Keechan

I love singing along to songs but most importantly I love singing along to songs sung by Rahman Ji. Yes I find myself singing along to this more compared to the other songs of this album. I would go as far as saying that in the future when I look back to “Kadal”, I wouldn’t be surprised if “Elay Keechan” still remains as my favourite song sung by Rahman Ji.

5.Magudi Magudi

Rahman Ji has let himself loose in this no holds barred composition. I love to experiment with music and I consider “Magudi Magudi” a generous tutorial package as a gift for untrained learners like me.

6.Adiye

Not a fan of blues, if you ask me and so haven’t given this much hearings. Yes I feel bad about that but to be honest there’s so much scope in the songs above to keep me going that I don’t feel guilty.

7.Anbin Vasale

By no means does this mean that this is a weak track and in fact it’s one of the most powerful songs to have release last year. This collaboration with Haricharan will live on forever and in theory some of you may think I have left the best till the end. Maybe I’m lacking taste or maybe I’m too naive to realise this songs true potential but it bugs me that I can’t hear this song without recalling “Nadhiye Nadhiye” and “Anbae Idhu” both from “Rhythm” but if I look on the bright side then “Anbin Vasale” gives me an excuse to listen to “Rhythm’s” two songs and together all three songs are evidently evergreen.

Mani and ARR are busy with Re-Recording

Mani Ratnam is a perfectionist and a complete professional.

Unlike some other directors, he is there throughout the post-production work of his films. Not even one single shot or even a background score will get into the film without his nod.

Mani Ratnam makes it a point to physically present on the spot during post production.

For the last few days Mani sir and AR Rahman have been busy with the re-recording of Kadal at Rahman’s studio.

It is not an easy job as Mani has to oversee post-production work and last minute release issues concerning Kadal.

It is a big relief that the film has been censored with a U certificate and release date firmed up for February 1.

Nenjukkulle was written and shot for Arjun and Manchu. What prompted Mani to use it for the other pair and that too as a montage? The lyrics didn't match the situation/scenes.

Magudi was my least fav of the album. But after watching it on the big screen, the song is on loop. Esp the title block was cool.

Songs these days prompt ppl to go out for a fag. For the first time, I saw people sitting for the songs and then going out.

Padam sodhappal! ARR's superb songs and Rajeev Menon's cinematography were the only saving grace.

Will the original, creative Mani wake up? Or has he become a K. Balachander already?

Exactly Ajay...it was the same case here too in Malaysia...saw it on the first day itself....and for the first time i did not see anyone going for a smoke or even to the washroom during the songs....
and there was quite a decent crowd for the movie on that day...around 80% full...considering that it was a Friday afternoon,a working day...and also 'David' was playing at the same time....
