Music: Girish

Director Pandiraj made a grand debut as director with Sasikumar’s Pasanga in 2009. The successful film, which dealt with the psyche of school-going children and the art of parenting, won him many awards at the national and international stage. He followed it up with last year’s Vamsam which had the curvaceous Sunaina as heroine opposite debutant Arulnidhi. The film was a moderate success.

Pandiraj is all set to launch his third directorial venture titled Marina. As the title amply suggests, the film would be documenting the lives and the means of livelihood of the many children who have made the sprawling Marina Beach in Chennai as their ‘place of work’ by selling many eatables and also indulging in children-centric activities like horse-riding, etc.

Popular TV host and reality show star Siva Karthikeyan is all set to make his debut as hero with Marina. The affable Siva has been signed up as hero opposite Oviya (of Kalavaani fame). Oviya also starred in the Kamal-Trisha starrer Manmadhan Ambu late last year amid cries that her role had been ‘pruned down’ in the film. She, however, gave a good account of her acting credentials in Kalavaani.

Pandiraj’s favourite set of actors and technicians find a place in Marina. Jayaprakash, the teacher of Pasanga, is part of the cast in Marina as well. Vijay, the cinematographer of Pandiraj’s earlier two films, would repeat his act for the director’s third film also. Pandiraj is introducing Krish as music director with this film, which is expected to go to the floors shortly.

Marina (Tamil)
Like Pandiraj's debut film "Pasanga", "Marina" also revolves around children, focusing on the uneducated ones. The film will be a mirror that reflects the lives of children at the marina beach, who sell snacks and goodies at beach side stalls and are deprived from luxuries and basic needs. It is said to be inspired from Mira Nair's critically acclaimed Hindi film "Salaam Bombay!" in 1988 and stars Siva Karthikeyan in his feature film debut.

Just returned from watching the movie - about 40 ppl in cinema (Nanban drew 15 while Vettai was less than 10 - how do these ppl survive?)

1. Sivakarthikeyan's name appear THIRD in the list after Pakada Pandian's name.

2. True enough, his role is that of a comedian and not the lead star. Emaatheettaanga

3. But every scene he appears is :rotfl: His sense of timing

4. Story is entirely on the beach boys - thier trials and tribulations. (Sivakarthikeyan's dream is to correct a figure and bring her to the beach)

5. When you think the movie is going to finish... the intermission sign comes ... very very lengthy feel

6. Boys are good and talented.... but it gets boring after a while

7. There is a sub story but adhuvum.... (ok won't tell now)

Conclusion: Oru thadavai paarkkalaam type, altho there is seriously nothing wrong with the movie. Songs don't impress either. Sivakartikeyan is the saving grace.. but all his scenes will be shown in Adhithya soon. :)

Sify review

The film chronicles the day-to-day life of children living on the Marina beach.

Shot on actual locations, director Pandiraj who made that memorable film Pasanga, with kids is back with Marina, an honest attempt that focus on importance of education.

But sadly the film falls flat and has a documentary feel to it. You can predict in the first ten minutes more or less how the entire movie will play out. It is a gritty, clichéd tale of a bunch of people- old, young and kids who make a living at the famous beach by selling water packets and peanuts and has a story of their own to tell.

Ambikarathy (Pakoda Pandian) an orphan who comes to Chennai, the friendly kind-hearted postman (Jithan Mohan), an old man (Sundararajan) abandoned by his children, a singer (Arumugham) , Senthilnathan (Sivakarthikeyan) and his lover Swapnasundari (Oviya), a horseman are some of the characters in the beach.

The problem with Marina is that it neither entertains touches nor inspires you due to the predictable story, slow pace and songs which pop up at regular intervals. In all fairness, there are few surprises like debutant Vijay’s dazzling cinematography which brings alive the nooks & corners, surrounding slums, fish market, the subtle humour in dialogues and above all the superb performances from all the kids. Pokoda Pandian is a face you're unlikely to forget anytime soon.

Though well-intentioned, the chief problem with Marina is its length where everyone becomes a caricature (sample: Jayaprakash).

Verdict: Boring

Indiaglitz review

Marina beach is a collage of human life. It is a place of fun, joy and festivity. It withstood the test of time and has seen many changes. For every Chennaiite, Marina is a place to reckon with.

On the other side, we have seen many children selling sundal, horsemen waiting for customers and women astrologers searching for clients there at Marina. Have we ever wondered what their daily life would be like? The answer lies in 'Marina', directed by Pandiraj.

The movie is one helluva trip to the shores of Marina. Though there are darker shades of life on the sands, Pandiraj has taken feel-good moments and weaved them into a movie. After his National Award winning 'Pasanga', Pandiraj has laid his hands on a similar genre.

A group of children, a handful of serious characters and some comedy in the form of Siva Karthikeyan and Oviya, 'Marina' begins well and ends well.

There are many underlining messages in the movie - keep the shores clean, treat elders with courtesy and above all provide proper formal education to child labourers for a better tomorrow. Pandian who played Pakada in 'Pasanga' takes the lead role. Ambikapathy (Pandian) is the pivot around whom the whole movie revolves. An orphan, he comes to Chennai to eke out his livelihood. The very sight of Chennai initially scares him. But he musters courage to face all challenges.

Marina beach beckons him. Ambikapathy decides to sell water packets. His friendly manners win him the admiration and love of young child labourers on the shores of Marina. An old man (Sundararajan) and postman (Jithan Mohan) turn friends for these children.

There is a singer (Aatkaati Arumugham) and his young daughter Annamma (Jayashree) who live in the shores. The beach also witness every evening a lover couple Senthilnathan (Sivakarthikeyan) and Sopana Sundari (Oviya) coming there and spending time.

All twists and turns lead to a riveting climax where the need to provide formal education to children and the need to do away with child labour is brought out well.

Pandian has continued from where he left in 'Pasanga'. The young boy has played his part well. He gels with his character and lives the role of Ambikapathy. His body language and dialogue delivery are a treat to watch. Be it the emotional sequences or fun-filled moments, Pandian brings out right expressions.

The host of young boys in the beach along with Pandian is tailor-made for the roles. The surprise element is Sundararajan. The old man plays a dignified role and succeeds in providing heartwarming moments on screen. Anchor-turned-actor Siva Karthikeyan and Oviya form a vital part of the movie though they appear in very few scenes.

Jithan Mohan as a postman provides the right twist to the script. As mentor to the children selling sundal on the shores, he performs with aplomb.

Watch out for debutant cinematographer Vijay. Capturing the whole movie in Marina beach is no easy task. But Vijay has taken it in his stride to show the beach in a fresh new hue. The busy life, especially the aerial shots of crowded beach et al has been captured well in his camera. Giving him good company is debutant music composer Girish. The young gun has come up with a splendid background score that compliments the storyline.

Pandiraj's vision and message is loud and clear. The movie seems to have achieved the goal. A movie like 'Marina' that is unconventional from the word go deserves appreciation.

Though at places it sounds more a docu-drama, 'Marina' makes a pleasant watch. In a nutshell, 'Marina' is perhaps India's answer to Oscar-winner 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

Top10cinema review

Walk through the shores of Marina, you’ll find hundreds and thousands of faces, each one with its own story to tell. But we don’t intend to get in depth while Pandiraj walks into this territory and of course excels with his idea. Nothing can be better than these lines to reveal the storyline of Marina from the maker of Pasanga, an acclaimed movie with best value of entertainment and a good message.

Ambikapathy, a little boy arrives Chennai in a funeral van, walks across the busiest lanes of Chennai and finally finds his solace on the shores of Marina with its shores drenched with Bengal waves kissed with Sun. Though the ambience doesn’t favor him at first, he soon becomes acquainted with other kids and few persons over there. On a parallel track, we find Senthilnathan (Shiva Karthikeyan), a happy-go-lucky chap looking after his business with his friend. His aspiring motto in life is to have a girlfriend to accompany him at the beach much alike other lovers.

The story traverses through the lives of these estranged children, their past filled with melancholy and despondency and director’s view of thought on offering them a solution.

Director Pandiraj follows the western movies style of narration as he doesn’t involve the formula of first and second half. The dramatic proceeding gives a feeling of watching docu-drama in few places, but the hilarious quotients trivializes these factors, thanks to Shiva Karthikeyan and Pandiraj’s humor attributes delivered through dialogues as in Pasanga.

It should have been a travailing phase for Pandiraj for the casting of actors and his ability to let them into the skin of characterizations deserves tons of appreciations. Not to miss the characterization of old man and postmaster in whom the children find solace at times. The humorous encounters between Shiva Karthikeyan and Oviya leave you in splits. His real life sense of humour has helped him etch this characterization with an ease.

Post-intermission, we tend to have a feel the film is too preachy, but again Pandiraj realizes the need to change the course and takes it accordingly.

On the end note, it’s a happy moment for Chennaites for the director assures that this City is a Homeland for anyone, who comes here seeking refuge.

Musical score by newcomer Girish is pretty appreciable and his background score adds more intensity to the emotional depth. Cinematography needs special mention for giving a fresh look of Marina and its ambience.

On the whole, Marina is feel-good movie with more elements of entertainment and message about those children we find them selling food items across the shores. Doubtlessly, your perception about them after watching this film will be completely different as it was with Angaadi Theru that threw lights upon the pathetic lives of salespersons in textile shops of Chennai. The film will surely bring more honors for Pandiraj and the film deserves it.

What works: Message, Entertainment, Casting, Good performances of actors

What doesn’t work: Docu-drama effects in few places

Verdict: A Touching Film with realistic approach. Hats off to Pandiraj…

Galatta review

There is no doubt that Pandiaraj's Marina is one of the most awaited film in Kollywood this year. After the critically acclaimed and National award winning Pasanga and the desi styled Vamsam, the director is back to his favourite forte: social drama. The film graced around 38 screens across the city today. Considering the fact that there are no other major releases with Marina, the film is expected to be a box office winner. But obviously all these will depend on the film's story and screenplay. So here we bring you an exclusive review of Marina...

THE PLOT

Before talking about the plot of Marina, we would like to clarify that the film narrates a set of interesting events in Marina beach. Ambikapathi (Pandian) lands up in Chennai with lots of dreams and he eventually ends up selling water packets in Marina. Here he befriends Kailash! Then we have Senthilnathan (Shiva Karthikeyan) who dreams of romancing a girl and his arrogant girl friend Sopna Sundari (Oviya). There are few more interesting characters and the film revolves around their lives. Twist comes in the form of a police officer who send his man to Chennai in search of Kailash! Reason? for that you will have to watch Marina, only on screens!

THE PERFORMANCE

Director Pandiaraj has neatly captured the local flavour of Chennai through cinematographer Vijay's lens. But the film does not have a strong story line. The director has used the first half to develop the story and the plot unfolds only in the second half which gives a documentary feel. But though the film has it's own ups and downs there is no doubt that Marina is one of the finest films which has portrayed Chennai in a good lime light. The core message in the film is about education! Educate the current generation, the country will have a better future tomorrow - This is the crux of Pandiaraj's Marina.

Coming to performance, we must say that this film (with newcomers in main roles) has one of the finest cast in recent times. TV host Siva Karthikeyan steals the show with his comedy one liners, in fact it is hard to believe that this is his debut film. Oviya as a Chennai girl fits the bill perfectly though she will have to tone down her facial expression. Among the star cast Pandian and Gautham Purushoth has done an excellent job. Everyone has done their job perfectly; the abandoned grand father, post master, roadside singer and his daughter, the habitual petrol pilfer, the police constables and the list goes on... In fact a perfect casting!

Vikram, Prakash Raj, Sasikumar, Sneha, Ameer and Vimal do a special appearance in the introduction song composed by Girishh G. The debutant composer's background scores are perfect and adding more essence to the songs are its lyrics by Na. Muthukumar and Yugabharathi.

An emotional entertainer which will in fact make you think!

Watched it - Marina is a documentary. Since Pandi got an award for his first film unexpectedly, he made this film with national award ingredients for getting another one or at least to prove his recognition that he got for his first movie.

Very slow, I mean very very slow, unwanted songs are the negative sides. Otherwise movie is watchable, but just once. Certain characters were too good [ Dancing small girl, Old gentleman, two cops etc... ]. Sivakarthikeyan is ok, he made me smile occasionally. Pakada did well.
