Wales football manager Gary Speed has died, aged 42

Sources have said Speed, the national manager for nearly a year, was found hanged.

Cheshire Police confirmed he was found dead at 07:08 GMT at his home in Huntington, Chester. They said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Former Wales team mate Ryan Giggs said: "Words cannot begin to describe how sad I feel at hearing this awful news."

He said: "Our thoughts are with his family at what must be a very difficult time for them."

The FAW said: "We extend our sympathies and condolences to the family.

"We ask that everyone respects the family's privacy at this very sad time."

The FAW added: "That this tragedy should have overtaken someone so young and talented is a huge loss not only for his family and friends but a nation as a whole."

Speed, who was awarded the MBE in the 2010 Birthday Honours, leaves a wife and two children.

Phil Pritchard, FAW president, said they would do "whatever we can" to help Speed's family.

In a statement, Cheshire Police said: "At 7.08am on Sunday 27th November Cheshire Police was informed of a sudden death at an address in Huntington in Chester.

"Officers went to the scene where a 42-year-old man was found dead.

"The next of kin have been informed and have confirmed the identity of the man as Gary Speed.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger wants Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to work on the defensive side of his game.

The 18-year-old was outstanding in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night, causing Manchester City plenty of problems with his pace, direct running and eye for goal.

“Defending is not his preferred side but unfortunately at the top level today you have Messi doing it, Rooney, Ronaldo, Van Persie - so why should he not do it?” Wenger told Arsenal Player.

“There is no other way to succeed anymore. That's why, of course, I believe he has the quality to do it. He has the physical ability and he is not scared to go into challenges. He can take a challenge.

“To add that to his game will make him stronger because he will win some balls in areas where he can be dangerous. He's a player who has an impact.

“If you look at the whole picture when you think him, Frimpong, Coquelin, Ramsey and Wilshere just in midfield - we have absolutely exceptional talent and it's very important that we continue to develop them very well.”

---------------

He needs to work on his corners as well. His mistake cost us the counter which led to Aguero goal.

Coq benefitted from his loan move to Lorient. Frimmers needs that too. He has all the skills needed to become a solid DM like Tiote. If he could improve his attacking game, perhaps even get close to Essien. He has the desire, grit, power & aggression to achieve great things IMHO. Being young, he'll make mistakes. So it's better if he graduates elsewhere. We can't afford those mistakes in PL/CL.

Group C is tough, only because the Italians got used to being outclassed by Trap's Irish.

We're in one twisted group of death. The biggest problem might come from the scummies. At least without Scolari, their dark arts aren't as effective as before. At least, we could enjoy our games. Not a single match to rest/rotate. Danes have some good players too..Agger, Eriksen, Bendtner(!)

Brazil 1982 http://youtu.be/zZxvYy5-ekI

Just as Foolnought mentions Spurs're playing the best football we've ever seen. We mourn for 'Brazil 1982' & decay of contemporary taste.

We live in an age of 'win at all costs' that we take for granted the rare celestial pursuits of Bra-82 & divine inspiration of Zico/Socrates

We live in an age where imperfections are mistaken for virtue, randomness mistaken for poetry, that we yearn for a true genius.

Socrates turns out for non league Garforth Town: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8wwx9aF-wM

Socrates would have slotted nicely to PL.His fully stretched two-footed lunges would be cherished more than his gazelle-esque deceptive runs

From what I've seen (admittedly less), Socrates was the brazilian MF who made the balance b/w effectiveness & flair.

His lunging runs & simple passes at deep. A prototype for AMs like Kaka. Of course, he was also a cult figure. Football’s own Che Guevara.

kid-glove
4th December 2011, 04:31 PM
Whether it's failed mind or failed health, likes of Speed, Socrates affect us deeply. They've affected some part of our subconscious in some way.

In less than a week, Ken Russell & Araki have passed away too. Regardless of age, it does leave us with a tinge of sadness.

Not to forget Smoking Joe & Roebuck (regardless of disturbing/sickening rumors).

Just read transcripts of Evra vs Suarez from FA's site. If anything, this guy has to be banned for the season and not 8 matches. Shameful

Sample this ->

The FA's case, in short, was as follows. In the goalmouth, Mr Evra and Mr Suarez spoke to
each other in Spanish. Mr Evra asked Mr Suarez why he had kicked him, referring to the
foul five minutes previously. Mr Suarez replied "Porque tu eres negro", meaning "Because
you are black". Mr Evra then said to Mr Suarez “say it to me again, I’m going to punch
you”. Mr Suarez replied "No hablo con los negros", meaning "I don't speak to blacks". Mr
Evra continued by saying that he now thought he was going to punch Mr Suarez. Mr
Suarez replied "Dale, negro, negro, negro", which meant "okay, blackie, blackie, blackie".
As Mr Suarez said this, he reached out to touch Mr Evra's arm, gesturing at his skin. Mr
Kuyt then intervened. When the referee blew his whistle and called the players over to
him shortly after the exchanges in the goalmouth, Mr Evra said to the referee "ref, ref, he
just called me a fucking black".

Paul Scholes on the bench for United :redjump:

Scholes rejoins United

Paul Scholes has rejoined the playing staff at Manchester United for the remainder of the season with immediate effect, after approaching Sir Alex Ferguson to reverse his decision, made at the end of last season, to retire.

He has gone straight onto the bench for this afternoon’s FA Cup third round tie against Manchester City.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It’s fantastic that Paul has made this decision. It’s always sad to see great players end their careers, but especially so when they do it early.

"But he has kept himself in great shape and I always felt that he had another season in him. It’s terrific to have him back."

Paul Scholes added: "I’ve been pretty clear since I stopped playing that I miss it. I’m delighted the manager feels I can still make a contribution to the team and I’m looking forward to playing my part in trying to bring more success to this great club.”

Well played City, well done Mancini, they deserved what they got in the second half.. This game showed we cant defend to save our lives this season.. Against a 10 men City we should have pressed more and got a few more.. We decided to keep the ball and get defensive and they came out attacking.

Having said that, we played really well in the first half.. Now, keep building on this win boys...

Very disappointed with CL exit, disappointed with FA cup exit and happy with league position (as of now). If we sail thru the next 3-4 fixtures without much damage - Stoke, Chelsea, Liverpool, I believe we are in good shout for the title.
With 3 midfielders returning in the next 2 weeks, things look better. Let's see :). Hope you guys do us a favor by beating city when you meet them in April :noteeth:

Disgraceful exit in all cups

More than agree on CL and Carling cup but FA cup defeat by no means a disgrace.. The scouse generally raise their game against us and we went into the game with almost 6 regulars missing and 3 or 4 who could have made it to the bench.. With the regular central defenders missing for almost 3/4 of the season, I'm happy with our position in the league.. CL exit has been the most disappointing thing about this season but yeah, we needed that kick in the back.. I'm sure SAF and the team wont be complacent in the near future..

Pele turns nostalgic as Santos celebrates centenary

AFP

Three-time World champion Pele was at the forefront of celebrations as his former Brazilian club Santos celebrated its centenary on Saturday.

Pele spent two decades at the club where he made his name and arrived by helicopter to lead the cheerleading at its Vila Belmiro stadium while current star Neymar was also on hand along with dozens of children who were also allowed onto the pitch to enjoy the occasion at close quarters during a special gala match.

“This moment is a gift from God,” said Pele, 71, who made his club debut in 1956 and continued in its black and white colours until 1974 before heading for the US league with New York Cosmos prior to retirement.

Moment of pleasure

“All this happiness, this moment of pleasure — it's not just about me. Many suffered with me — I thank everyone,” said an emotional Pele, Globo daily's web portal ‘web G1' reported.

The club's prodigal son arrived clutching the Copa Libertadores Trophy which Santos won for the third time last season.

Former stars from across the generations joined Pele to mark the centenary of a club which was a small-time outfit at its birth on April 14, 1912, before the likes of Pele turned it into world beater.

It won the Sao Paulo state championship 11 times in 15 seasons in an era when the competition was far more prestigious than it is today.

The club won the South American Copa Libertadores in successive years in 1962 and 1963 and also won the Intercontinental Cup — played against the reigning European champion — back to back in these years.

Two-legged victories over Eusebio's Benfica and Italian giant AC Milan allowed Santos to legitimately call itself the best team in the world.

http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/01054/TH16_SANTOS_1054386f.jpg

Everyone wanted to see it in action and, as Pele said at the presentation of a book to mark the club's centenary, “the only place Santos did not visit was the moon.”

Its visit to a Congo embroiled in war in 1969 was enough to bring a halt to the fighting, albeit only temporarily, and the same applied when Santos visited Nigeria at the time of the Biafra Civil War that same year.

“It made no sense for these countries to carry on fighting while Santos were there,” club historian Guilherme Nascimento recently told sports daily Lance!

FIFA had earlier paid its tribute by noting on its website earlier in the week that “rarely in the history of football can a team have been so closely associated with one player as Santos FC are with Pele.”

Kit unveiled

Thousands of fans looked on as the club's new turquoise kit was unveiled — a nod to what G1 termed “the colonial and harbour inheritance of the city and the colours and the famous Itororo fountain,” a Santos landmark and long-time meeting place and popular tourist attraction.

Santos hails from the city of the same name on Brazil's Atlantic coast founded in the mid-16th century, and the city's association with the sea explains the club's nickname ‘O Peixe' (‘The Fish' in English).

The club, who in January 1998 were recognised by FIFA as becoming the first in the history of the game to score 10,000 official goals, is celebrating its first 100 years in a variety of ways.

Commemorative book

The launch of a book and the release of a documentary film entitled ‘Santos: 100 years of football art' will allow fans of the world game to relive the history of this great club, named by FIFA as the best on the American continent in the 20th century.

Keywords: Pele, Santos

They played with 10 men, not sure they were negative than La Liga champions Real were couple of days back.

That counterattack goal was a great move and a real suckerpunch. Ramires is an incredible athlete and what a sexy finish, Ronaldinho would be proud!! Lampard is a terrific playmaker for park-the-bus counterattack sides! And entire chelsea side played like fighters. Deserved to reach the final.

Deserves got nothing to do with this. If possession, chances created were criteria, then only Barca will win trophies. Or to blow your own trumpet in PL, Arsenal.

Unless Barca pass a ruling in UEFA/FIFA that possession/shots-on-target determine the winner and not goals, we'd make do with games like these. Barca could be proud and call themselves as 'the best team in the world', but they've not been consistent to win CL/Liga this season. And Bilbao will refuse to lay down in Copa. Will Pep stay? Wat would Rosell circus do? Buy Neymar and more South American talents, not filling positions they need to? Barca need to sort things out and come out stronger.

Apart from the fact that he strung that pass to Iniesta, creating 4-5 other chances in both legs & vs Madrid, Messi's been having a bad time, yes. That missed penalty to crossbar, then a shot to the post. Very unlucky.

Cryronaldo meanwhile is playing for a counterattacking side with easy tapins from Ozil's brilliance.

Messi is both creater and finisher, Cryboy is a goal poacher. In fact I'd say Messi = Ozil (Real's best player) + Cryboy.

ronaldo's striking abilities from outside the box and difficult angles are just top class.doubt anybody can finish like him..he has become a goal machine only after leaving Utd..he has always been a playmaker throughout...he is second best to messi...for me its because almost everytime messi is on the ball, you can just feel something's round the corner...the man's vision is unbelievable

His shot conversion ratio is so poor. Messis's far better. Falco's better as well. Heck, even his Real teammates are more clinical. But Cryboy takes more than 200 shots for himself. Never seen a more selfish player.
His FK is overrated. He didn't score for 18 months until that one vs Atletico. People will still say he has a 'great' freekick on him.
As a playmaker, he's only next to Theo Walcott. Like Theo, his assists tend to be crosses/cutbacks, not cultured defense splitting passer/playmaker. Even at Madrid, Benzema, Ozil, Di Maria are better playmakers and better players, maybe not great goal scorers.

Telling stat from Opta, remove Messi's contribution in goals + assists + key passes, FCB finish 6th. Remove Cryboy, Real still finish 1st.

In general, gimme Messi, Rooney, Aguero, RVP, Benzema to Falcao, Gomez, Cryboy, Dzeko !! More complete players.

Football will miss Pep than vice versa. Thorough gentleman and deserves equal credit sharing with Messi for making Barca as number 1 side in the world.

Couldn't imagine the mayhem that is El Clasico would be without him. That classless moron Mourinho will have a field day unless Barca get someone impregnable like Bielsa.

Man City vs Newcastle away / United vs Sunderland away should have been the last day fixture. But they're split a week apart. Would have been more dramatic. If City don't beat Newcastle, United win the title.

3rd & 4th up for grabs. Cisse's brilliant & Newcastle are flying. Spurs have got some form back. We're looking for draws than wins without any midfield drift that Arteta/Wilshere provide. Spare the Shastri, it's going down to the wire.

Sad joke? I could only see Messi beating Messi. Yikes!

Obviously, not everybody. Those who like Man United just because they win. (P.S: I have not followed leagues regularly myself) I would assert that the article which PR shared holds true for most part. Nobody watches non-EPL leagues and even if one does, they won't be beyond Barca/ Real. These fake fans simply piss me off.

On Wannabe-ness, everyone starts as a wannabe. Some stay that way, others progress.

Gloryhunting - nothing wrong per se. It's a thing of the generation. You live in fast food world where you chose stuff that delivers immediately.

90's world cup/Euros generation had the option to find the players they like and the transmission of games weren't uniform. that let people chose a club. One rarely ever saw trophies being lifted. AFAIK, the only time that they marketed the league in search of 'fast food fans' was when United won treble in 1999. After a long time, it opened up the opportunity to market an English club as best in the world. In Beckham, they found a fashion icon. Unfortunately, it's that generation of global United fans who are intolerable in their 'we will do what we want' attitude. The ones before and after were actually knowledgeable lot. Vieira vs Keane, Invincible Arsenal generation. Then came Chelsea generation. The Liverpool 2005 CL generation. And so on.

We live in an age of globalization, bursts of data & information, leaving you the opportunity to enrich your experience. Be it any Sports, any club or country to support. You do it for your own interest. If it's that moment of glory (of lifting trophies and being successful) that does it for you, then don't let anyone tell otherwise.

I could easily imagine a japanese single man/woman whose only eventful day of the week is to watch United play and his/her week governed by that result. A summer of gloom & emptiness if they don't win the league. On one hand, you could sneer and judge people. But on the other hand, it's completely human.
