Watched Thuppakki yesterday evening in Chrompet Vetri... really liked it.. :) ARM fully used Vijay who can always be a safe bet for action movies.. Pre-interval sequence of sleeping cells ellAm pullarippu... ARM has the knack of telling a story by not letting the audience to think much (you could not find certain plots illogical).

Of course, the movie has its own share of drawbacks - ARM :hammer: padatha mudichuttu ory thabA audience'a pAkkurathillayA... felt the same thing even in Ghajini / 7AM arivu...epdiyA indha padathula unakku 4 Duet vekka manasu varuthu.. it is almost certain that you may forget what happened earlier after each duet.. songs onnu kooda naala illa (incl google in which the saranam is straight rip-off from aachi manorama's portion in Madrasa sutthi (May maadham). The movie would have been much much better had all the 4 duets been cut. To my surprisem HJ faired well in important sequences. Still, he was clueless in the title track (reminds KK title track). Other technical aspects like cinematography, editing, stunts ellam nallA irunchu...

Overall, a neat action entertainer from ARM-Vijay

P.S: This is my 4th movie Chrompet Vetri. Earlier, I watched Endhiran, Naan E & Kalakalappu. So far, 4-0 for me as well as box office.

Thuppakki is no different from Vijay's other mass masala entertainers. But why has it attained such a phenomenal success? I tried to list down a few reasons.

- ARM had shown a Vijay who appealed to all classes of audience. Tremendous work has gone behind in improving his costumes and physique. Special thanks to Komal, the costume designer for Vijay in Thuppakki

- Heroism was PERFECT. No over the top dialogues or fancy stunts. Jagdish enters the scenes whenever the audience wants him to. Special thanks to Kecha, who has done a great job with the action sequences.

- Whenever the villain is as good as the hero, we are in for a treat. An Antony for Baasha, Muthupandi for Saravana Velu and now this nameless for Jagdish. Vidyut has all the talents and looks for becoming a big star in the future.

- The screenplay was slick. Gone are the days when movies used to run for the face value of heroes. Now the stars' crowd pull only helps for the initial opening. The sustaining solely depends on the word I mentioned in the first line - screenplay. All the recent hits will prove my statement.

- It has been quite a while since there was a movie with army as the back drop. Thuppakki is not without flaws. But when you finish off the movie with a line - Dedicated to the Indian Army and their families - your sins are to be pardoned.

ARM has left all options wide open for Thuppakki II. No information on people who instruct Jagdish and bigger/higher leaders in the Terror N/W.
Its like how you feel after watching a movie such as Bourne Identify, completely satisfied for a first part, at the same time the movie had enough questions for pursuing sequels. It only looks like a natural extension for Thuppakki II to take shape.

Ilayathalapathy Vijay threw a success party to the whole 'Thuppakki' team and he and Chiyaan Vikram who attended the party seemed to have bonded well and shared some moments.

Just as Vijay did not miss to give a special invitation to Vidyut Jamwal neither did he miss to invite Chiyaan Vikram and it looked like Vikram and Vijay were very good friends.

Vijay took an opportunity through the party to thank the team after receiving good word of mouth, rave reviews from film critics and a tremendous response from the audience for his recent Diwali release movie 'Thuppakki'.

The whole team of Thuppakki, including director Murugadoss and producer Thanu joined the success party of the film.

Thuppakki mints Rs.65.32 crore worldwide in opening week
Indo-Asian News Service | Tuesday, November 20, 2012 ( Chennai )

http://cdn.ndtv.com/movies/images/vijay-thuppakki.jpg

The film, directed by A.R. Murugadoss, opened on Diwali, November 13, and hit over 1,000 screens worldwide.

Vijay-starrer Tamil action-thriller Thuppakki collected Rs.65.32 crore worldwide in its opening week.

"The film collected Rs.65.32 crore worldwide in the first week. In Tamil Nadu, 'Thuppakki' raked in Rs.40 crore and above in the first six days and it continues to run to packed houses. It is also doing good business in neighbouring states such as Kerala and Andhra Pradesh," trade analyst Trinath told IANS.

The film, directed by A.R. Murugadoss, opened on Diwali, November 13, and hit over 1,000 screens worldwide.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Thuppakki collected Rs.1.18 crore in Britain, Rs.1.76 crore in the US and Rs.37.99 lakh in Australia, in its opening weekend.

The movie's story is about a captain from the Indian army, played by Vijay, who is on a vacation in Mumbai and gets involved in a terrorist scheme, which turns out to be bigger than anticipated.

The makers had to cut a few scenes from the film a few days after its release in Tamil Nadu, following concerns raised by members of the Muslim community who felt that certain scenes would hurt their sentiments.

"Some scenes were cut following the protest, but that hardly had any impact on the film's run at the box-office," Trinath added.

Kajal Agarwal, Satyan, Mano Bala, Vidyut Jamwal and Jayaram feature in key roles in the film, which has music by Harris Jeyaraj, cinematography by Santosh Sivan and editing by Sreekar Prasad.

Chennai Diwali Box-Office (Nov. 13 to 18)
Tuesday, 20 November , 2012, 13:52

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s AR Murgadoss directed Thuppakki has stormed the Diwali box-office. It has taken an earth shaking 6- day Diwali thundering box-office and is the clear number one by a mile. The film has netted approximately Rs 4.60 Crore from 41 screens in six days, which is awesome.
No other film has touched even one fourth of Thuppakki`s Diwali opening. At number two is Podaa Podi, which is above average and is being liked by the multiplex audiences. In the third place is Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hain Jaan the other big Diwali release which is just average.

And in the fourth place is the steady super hit Pizza, which is still getting good audiences during the Diwali weekend. It has already taken a share of Rs 1.36 Crore from Chennai city, which is very good considering the film was made for Rs 1.55 Cr!

And in the fifth place is Thangar Bachchan’s Ammavin Kaipesi, which would have done better if it was not released for Diwali.

Oscar Ravichandran reported a gross of over 200 crore. So Dasavatharam Net should be over 100 crore as dasa budget is not over 100 crore. I was around 60+ crore.

In general, Net is not related with production cost. In trade, if someone talks about the net collection, then he/she probably speaks for theatre owneres/distributors. For dasavatharam, i think the producer and distributor are the same. this would be completely different equation.
IMO, the net collection means gross revenue (number of tickets * price)-operating & maintanece cost-any damages cost- entertainment tax. the gross revenues are reported based on official ticket price rather than actual price.

Irrespective of Thuppakki's final numbers w.r.t. BO, one think is very clear. Thuppakki will surely break into top 3 in the all-time list with only Superstar and Ulaganayagan movies above Thuppakki.

I remember what Director Shankar said during Nanban's audio release "Everyone likes Vijay, after Nanban even people who don't like him will start liking him". Thuppakki has once again proven that when Vijay join hands with a good director, the result is massive. I really hope that Vijay learns a lesson or two in this.

Specifically for these reasons,I would like Vijay not to miss Ameer's project because I believe even if it is an experimental flick with Vijay on board, it will have far greater commercial value than other experimental movies. Vijay shouldn't miss this.

Same can be said about Gautham Menon. Notwithstanding his excellent 'time management' skills, Gautham Menon has a happy knack of delivering good commercial movies. If Gautham Menon and Vijay, join hands again the potential will be just huge. Hope this happens as well.

During the 12 sleeper cell assassination (before Vijay and his team follow the terrorist leader (right after marriage scene) who escapes from Vijay's house) logically, the terrorist could kill his family (or at least one of his family members) before escaping and re-grouping with the other sleeper cells?

*) he is not a leader..... he is one among the sleeper cells
*)his first priority is to escape and carry out the planned attacks on that day
*)He would have regained conscience only then...... he doesn't even know whether Vijay is in the house ..... So he would not attempt to attack his family (because he can assume that Vijay is there in the house and he could get caught again)
*)He doesn't have any arms

After the recent success of Thuppakki, Vijay and A.R.Murugadoss are understandably elated. Box-office returns and reviews have been positive from day 1.Recently, Ajith took some time out to congratulate and wish Vijay as well as Murugadoss on their success. He was impressed with their work and was profuse in his praise. Both of them were elated at this gesture from Ajith.Ajith and Vijay are known to be close friends in real life inspite of being professional contemporaries. This news is bound to get both sets of fans, who are often at loggerheads with one another, delighted.

Judging by what ARM had said of Sathyan's character, i guess he has got what he wanted. I guess it was largely intentional and except for the 'betermax' and couple of moments where he would be probing Vijay about the terrorist, Sathyan's character was never meant to be funny IMO.

Honest, one honest comment i have is, watching a movie like Thuppakki in theatres to watching at home first time, i guess makes a lot of difference.

Katrina, Sonakshi, Deepika up for Thuppakki remake?
Akshay Kumar's popularity among his leading ladies remains undiminished. For proof, try this. Three of his favourite co-stars Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha and Deepika Padukone have, in the words of someone close to the project, "shown varying degrees of interest" in doing the Hindi version of the Tamil Diwali blockbuster 'Thuppakki' which is currently ruling the box office.
Now, there could be two other reasons besides Akshay Kumar in these three lovely ladies' keen interest in doing Thuppakki . The film has broken all previous records in Tamil cinema, exceeding the collections of even the biggest Rajnikanth blockbusters. At the same time, this action-oriented film offers the leading lady a chance to play a boxer. We hear three of Akshay's leading ladies feel they're eminently qualified.
Says our source, "After the intense experience of doing Jab Tak Hai Jaan , Katrina is at themoment searching for something fun to do in her next project. The Thuppakki remake will give her that sense of unwinding. Besides she's been dying to do something with producer Vipul Shah and Akshay Kumar for the longest. She had a fabulous time working with them in Namaste London and since the Namaste London sequelis not happening immediately she is agreeable to taking on the challenge of doing the remake of Thuppakki ." Deepika Padukone may beat Katrina to it simply by default.
"She was offered the original Tamil film, but could not do it due to date issues. Now Deepika is the top contender for the boxer's role in Hindi, and mainly because she by nature an athleteand has been looking out for a sporty role," says our source.
We hear Kajal Aggarwal who plays the lead in the original Tamil film is not eligible for the remake. Says our source, "The cast will be completely different .Both Vipul and Akshay feel the remake should be completely different in look. Sonakshi Sinha has also expressed interest in the role." When contacted producer Vipul Shah completely cut down reports that Parineeti Chopra has been signed opposite Akshay. "It could be any of the ladies you've mentioned. We're very sure that the remake would have to be very different from the original. Vijay who stars in Thuppakki is a superstar in Tamil cinema. With Akshay the remake will acquire a larger appeal. So yes , the leading lady would be different from the Tamil film."
In fact Vipul's current blue-eyed boy Vidyut Jamwal who played the villain in Vipul's production Force would not encore his villainous role from Thuppakki. Asserts Vipul,"I will certainly not cast Vidyut as the villain. I am launching him as a hero in Commando . So the villain too would be played by a different actor in the remake. You see, the whole idea is to give the remake of Thuppakki a fresh look. Our director Murugadoss , Akshay and I will lock in on the heroine as soon as we know who can look convincing as a boxer."
One hears Deepika may just beat Katrina and Sonakshi to the role. Says the director A Murugadoss,"We'll decide who plays the leading lady once we all sit down to discuss the matter. The girl's character will change in Hindi. In the Tamil film she's a funny boxer. She has nothing to do with Mary Kom. In Hindi we will now take references from Mary Kom and give the character more gravity."

EXCLUSIVE 12 DAYS COLLECTION : THUPPAKI GROSSED 100 CRORES
The talk of the Tinsel town is whether Thuppakki grossed 100cr or not? We at cinemalead bring you an exclusive report on the box office report of Thuppakki till Saturday. These arethe approximated collection from various territories across the world.
Tamilnadu -66.5cr
Kerala-8cr
Karnataka 5cr
Andhra 10cr
Overseas 12 cr
So the overall gross of Thuppaki is around 101.5cr, which is really huge! The collections in overseas and neighbouring states are likely to end by Sunday. We are expecting around 15- 20 cr gross in Tamilnadu from Thuppakki's entire theatrical run. As of now the share of Thuppakki is around 80 crores and the overall share in its entire theatrical run is expected to be around 85-90 crores. Whereas Sivaji's gross is expected around 130crores (all time second, released in 2007) and its share is 90-95cr. So Thuppakki will be slightly lesser when compare to Sivaji's share and it is unlikely to match Sivaji's gross. Endhiran still stands No.1 in terms of both gross and share,Endhirans gross is expected to be 300 + crores and its share is 178 crores. Based upon our estimation Thuppakki is all time 3rd biggest movie in terms of both gross and share.
Note: Satellite rights are not added with the share and the figures are approximated since it is very difficult to get a transparent report for a Tamil film.

Katrina, Sonakshi, Deepika up for Thuppakki remake with AkshayBy Subhash K. Jha ,Nov 24, 2012 - 12:26 hrs IST
Akshay Kumar's popularity among his leading ladies remains undiminished. For proof, try this. Three of his favourite co-stars Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha and Deepika Padukone have, in the words of someone close to the project, "shown varying degrees of interest" in doing the Hindi version of the Tamil Diwali blockbuster Thuppakki which is currently ruling the box-office. Now, there could be two other reasons besides Akshay Kumar, in these three lovely ladies' keen interest in doing Thuppakki. The film has broken all previous records in Tamil cinema, exceeding the collections of even the biggest Rajinikanth blockbusters. At the same time, this action-oriented film offers the leading lady a chance to play a boxer.

We hear three of Akshay's leading ladies feel they're eminently qualified. Says our source, "After the intense experience of doing Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Katrina is at the moment searching for something fun to do in her next project. The Thuppakki remake will give her that sense of unwinding. Besides, she's been dying to do something with producer Vipul Shah and Akshay Kumar for the longest time. She had a fabulous time working with them in Namastey London and since the Namastey London sequel is not happening immediately, she is agreeable to taking on the challenge of doing the remake of Thuppakki."

Deepika Padukone may beat Katrina to it simply by default. "She was offered the original Tamil film, but could not do it due to date issues. Now Deepika is the top contender for the boxer's role in Hindi, and mainly because she by nature an athlete and has been looking out for a sporty role," says our source.

We hear Kajal Aggarwal who plays the lead in the original Tamil film is not eligible for the remake. Says our source, "The cast will be completely different. Both Vipul and Akshay feel the remake should be completely different in look. Sonakshi Sinha has also expressed interest in the role."

When contacted, producer Vipul Shah completely cut down reports that Parineeti Chopra has been signed opposite Akshay. "It could be any of the ladies you've mentioned. We're very sure that the remake would have to be very different from the original. Vijay, who stars in Thuppakki, is a superstar in Tamil cinema. With Akshay, the remake will acquire a larger appeal. So yes, the leading lady would be different from the Tamil film."

In fact, Vipul's current blue-eyed boy Vidyut Jamwal who played the villain in Vipul's production Force would not encore his villainous role from Thuppakki. Asserts Vipul, "I will certainly not cast Vidyut as the villain. I am launching him as a hero in Commando. So the villain too would be played by a different actor in the remake. You see, the whole idea is to give the remake of Thuppakki a fresh look. Our director Murugadoss, Akshay and I will lock in on the heroine as soon as we know who can look convincing as a boxer."

One hears Deepika may just beat Katrina and Sonakshi to the role. Says the director A. Murugadoss, "We'll decide who plays the leading lady once we all sit down to discuss the matter. The girl's character will change in Hindi. In the Tamil film, she's a funny boxer. She has nothing to do with Mary Kom. In Hindi, we will now take references from Mary Kom and give the character more gravity."

By now, majority of film buffs ought to have seen Vijay’s Thuppakki and needless to say we expect the cast and crew of the film to have already seen the movie many times. But, lead actres...s Kajal Aggarwal took the time to see Thuppakki only recently.

She finally saw the movie in Hyderabad, Cinemax and found the movie to be very gripping. A majority of her social networking followers recommended Thuppakki to her as she was in the mood to see a movie after an early pack-up to her shooting duties.

She also took the opportunity to recommend this movie to her fans through her social networking page.

Right but Thuppakki in the top 3 is a proud moment for all of us to celebrate. Not only it is a fitting reply to all critics who have been calling for Vijay's blood for a long time, but it is also a sweet moment for all of us who kept our faith in Vijay. I am honestly sick of all the negativity the Vijay has been subjected to in the social networking space despite being a massive star in TN.

Tamil film 'Thuppakki' enters Rs 100 crore club

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/tamil-film-thuppakki-enters-rs-100-crore-club/307482-71.html

It's not just Bollywood films that are making their way into the elite Rs 100 crore club. AR Murugadoss's film 'Thuppakki' has not just become a blockbuster down South, but the film has also set the cash registers ringing at the box office. 'Thuppakki' has become the second Tamil film ever to enter the Rs 100 crore club.

The official page of 'Thuppakki' on Twitter confirmed the news, which was later retweeted by director AR Murugadoss, "Yes bullets, it is now officially confirmed that #Thuppakki has crossed the 100cr mark! It is only the second Tamil film ever to do so."

The film, which was released on Diwali, has turned out to be the biggest hit of 2012 by earning Rs 65.32 in the opening week. The film reached Rs 100 crore mark in just 11 days of its release.

How the movie collections comparison works? If movie A collected 100C 10 years before, movie B collected 100C 5 years before and movie C collected 100C now, I could say movie A still in the top among B and C. If same rules applied, we may see lot of movies from older generations which collected in Lakhs when such targets were unreachable at those times.

Gross = Number of tickets sold * Avg Ticket price

Gross - ET = Nett

From this nett, the theatre owners subtract their rent and forward the balance to the distributors. This is called DISTRIBUTOR's SHARE. And based on the agreed terms, the producer and distributor shares this amount. This amount along with the advance amount that the distributor had paid upfront to the producer covers the production cost and profits, if any.

Happy to see appreciation coming from all the corners.

Thuppakki's stupendous success will definitely ensure Vijay will take proper decisions (script/director selection) in future. Its OK to give masala movies like Velayudham once in a while (one in four) but variety is more important. I want him to do a full fledged negative role like Priyamudan, romantic movies like Sachien, Kushi, etc. If he is experimenting then its good to keep the movie budget low so that it recovers the production cost soon and not burn the producer/distributor hands.

I have been waiting for long time for a Vijay movie which is accepted by all. After Ghilli this movie has universal acceptance. Happy for Vijay and loyal Vijay fans who never lost faith in him and been his side during his worst phase.

All the best VIJAY.

A very decent entertainer. Never boring at any point of time. Director could have avoided some blatant loopholes and could have made it even more grippy. Murugadas is much better than his previous movies where he was spoon-feeding and beating abound the bush. Though Ramana is good (largely because of vijayakanth), his direction was hilarious at many scenes. Gajni - except flashback, that movie was a torture. Surprise package was Vijay. He was really good be it a comedy or action. The character warranted some sophistication and he carried it with ease. Much better than corny 'kiddo' types of Goutham vasudev menon. Music - Liked that Antarctica song. Apart from that so-so. All songs were picturised nicely. Even that opening song was really breezy picturization for an opening song. Cinematography obviously was good. Kajal, sathyan and jeyaram have played their role nicely.
