Lets have a separate thread for posting video/audio of instrumental recital of raja's songs/bgm.
As we already know, some recitals brings us more understanding to the hidden nuances of the original song! We also can better understand which parts are tough to play.
I am starting with Violin Vicky's (already posted) video:-

whoa! skr, for sharing this one, mikka nandri! Rajesh's playing is always very soulful. My only grouse in this one is the sound of his veenai. I think he's plugged it to a processor (seen in the video) and the sound it creates is a very electric guitar like one. The divinity of the veenai is somewhat missing. Anyway, he compromises for this with his lovely playing.
Never knew a ragam called Kosalam existed in the first place! Sundari kannaal's charanam has some unbelievably goosefleshy moments, the ones which Rajesh demonstrates here in this video. What a subtle variance in texture it creates in contrast to Kalyani's pleasant and warm feeling. This man's grasp and comprehension of music is simply beyond any other artist I've come across so far.
While googling for this ragam, came across this padhivu from Vel:
Kosalam was earlier used in film Thalapathi...the song is "sundari kannal oru seidhi"...Incidentally, the song blends the ragas "kosalam" & "kalyani" to give a blend of happy & pathos emotions (love & war scenes in that song..the orchestration in war sequences is in kosalam, the charanams mix both...pallavi reaches back to kalyani)..The genius in this song "sundari kannal oru seidhi" is that, the two ragas kosalam & kalyani, just differs in one swara, and IR has used this brilliantly to give two entirely different shades of emotions...The scale for the two songs are given here..
Kalyani - s r2 g3 m2 p d2 n3 s
Kosalam - s r3 g3 m2 p d2 n3 s...

One more song of Maestro where Kosalam is blended in a Kalyani based song is Vellai Pura Ondru from Pudhu Kavithai ..It happens in the 2nd interlude after the Flute-string portion but its not as profound as Sundari Kannal ..

thanks SKR and KV...
Back in 2002-2003, when i tried to say raaja has mixed kosalam with kalyani in the Thalabathi song "sundari kannal oru seidhi", i had the so called 'purists' and "'theorists'" denouncing the claim.....
These 'purists' and 'theorists' doubted if Raaja could have actually had "kosalam"" in his mind while doing this song.... The so called 'purists' and "'theorists'" thought it was outrageous to think Raaja actually had kosalam in mind while attempting what he did in the sundari kannal oru seithi song..... These pseudo--often arrogant--experts, belong to the "ï-only-know-these-30-keethanais-and-so-strictly-entertain-my-ego-within-my-sphere-of-knowledge" kind of kinatru thavalais didnt want to acknowledge anything by Raaja that they didnt understand .....It was as if they were indirectly saying "namakkae idhu theriyala, Raajavukku eppadi theriyum"?? These 'purists' and 'theorists' doubted if Raaja could have actually had "kosalam"" in his mind while doing this song....
May be Raaja does not care for kosalam + Kalyani, but he was goddamn sure of what feel the R2 G3 (kalyani) flow would give versus what the R3 G3 (kosalam) flow would give....for him, the feel is more important than the theory!
Raaja knows the limits and capabilities of the 7 notes.....he can bend and dictate terms and these 7 notes will dance to his tunes.....Raagas and theories are actually secondary, when we understand his deeper means of approaching music and the 7 notes !!
