Mr. "Get the job done" Mano

The 80s was the year of the giant trio, SPB, Malaysia Vasudevan and KJ Jesudass, as far as singing is concerned in TFI. But quietly, behind their gigantic shadows (not helped by the fact SPB was there), grew Mano (original name Nagoor Babu).

Mano is not as great as SPB, nor can he stake Carnatic credibility ala K.J. Jesudass and no way his voice can be immediately associated with the likes of NT AND Rajini like the late Malaysia Vasudevan is remembered. Maybe Ramarajan, but what the heck.

When Vasudevan was exhausted for singing for Rajini, they got Mano in and the man did justice. Of course, who can forget the Ramarajan/IR flicks where it’s okay to watch the movie with your eyes closed, except when Annan and Senthil appears.

So he gets the job done. He’s the courteous delivery boy. He is the Sous Chef. He is the Luca Brassi of TFI, except he didn’t sleep with the fishes. Here’s one I get to sing back in my school days when someone bigger hijacked the SPB song (yes, I could do the "silusilu" part):

I have nothing against him personnaly, but he has suthapified most of IR songs (eg the song you have posted above), he tried to imitate SPB with all SPB gimmicks (laugh, Cry, giggle...etc etc all) . He was OK under ARR, for the likes of Muqala mugabula / dila dilana etc etc. but he has no Originality, simply another SPB wannabe! (can you blame him though :wink: )

BTW enakum paada konjum theriyum, I am a stage singer. Hence I can identify Mano's limitations.

BTW , I met him in London, in a restaurant called " Banana Leaves, Tooting" . He was a friendly guy, paatha oru nadamadum Jewellery shop range ku chains / rings pottu irunthar :lol:

I am huge SPB fan, you know, but I don't see Mano consciously mimicking him. That's his own damned voice and those are Ilayaraja songs where improvisation like that tend to occur.

I didn't like it when 90s onwards he was known as the Muqabula guy, and doing that yoddle routine in all those Karthick comedies. He's a damned good melody singer. I think of recent, he did one beautiful song in Kathal Virus - maranthupaghu..

Anyway, a banana leaf meal is not complete without uruga. So you are welcomed :roll:

I somehow like Ramarajan, not for his stereo-typed acting or for his non-modulated dialogues, but I can always feel as someone very much known to me for years. May be that's how he clicked.;-) Also because of this and down to earth approach, films that time were (and are) close to heart. It will be very simple and we can even predict everything, still those films were much enjoyable.

Nikkattuma Pogattuma from Periya veettu Pannakaaran. Beautifully sung by Mano and Chitra. I always feels ecstatic whenever I listen to the song. Celestial tune and melody! I will give everything for that magical flute in second interlude. As if someone plays flute after he got fully drunk.

+1 Well said. Anytime we can listen to this song. It's absolute wonder by IR. I remember hearing this one and Puthucheri Katcheri being #1 (alternatively every week) on radio for more than 1 year in 1992-1993. Every song in both these films are gems.

Again when it comes to Mano, Chembaruthi is another big one for him. Starting with 'Nila Kaayum Neram' (one of few song I didn't like SJ singing especially at higer octaves she clearly could not manage and tends to break and 'screech') Mano has done comparatively well against SJ at higher octaves.
Two big ones 'Chalakku chalakku selai' and 'Pattupoove Mettu Podu', beautiful songs from Mano. Of course we have SPB's inimatable 'Nadanthal Irandadi', but those three songs were way popular compared to this one.

Four beautiful songs from Chinna Maple. Vennilavu Kothipathenna resembles SPB style of singing. Some places I used to get confused whether it is Mano or SPB. The last line when Mano ends the second charanam with that sinungal, always confuses me. Beautiful job by Mano at the end!. Swarnalatha was at ease with her voice perfectly fitting the mood.

I guess detractors are seething from the fact that the songs would have been much better in the hands of the greats. Of course that's the truth. What if Kamal did Payanaggal Mudivathillai? Or Rajini did Mudhalvan?

Ultimately, the style of singing, the suitability with the screen stars lead to Raja using Mano for those songs, and he did the job. Great job? You judge. But he did well to my ears. I borrowed "get the job done" phrase from Bala (K) actually, when he was writing about Surya in one of those Surya vs Madhavan spats. Surya is the Mano of acting, not great, but he gets the job done, sometimes quite poor (VA Dad), but he get it done nevertheless.*

Read the intro again. He is Luca Brassi, not Michael. That would have been insulting to others, but I think of it as a great honour.

Who can forget the gorgeous and mighty 'Malai Kovil Vaasalil' from Veera. Frequent listen from my playlist. I would even say the first song to strike me when I first listened to Veera songs. I know I didn't forget Swarnalatha here. Mano strikes a beautiful balance with Swarnalatha and does not feel out of place anywhere.

That song is majestic, V_S. It's hard to get Rajini to go soft romantic (as opposed to the rough ones that he's familiar with -hold the girl's shoulder for three seconds look at her, and do power grab to hug her), and I'd say the beautiful song mellowed him down (also Meena factor, re: Ejjaman).

Chembaruthi - the sole black spot is Mano. No, he has company in an aged Banumathi, who wasnt exactly a cuckoo even in her youth. nilA kAyam nEram saraNam(thick voice emphasising syllables at places they roll off so mediocrely and create a disturbance in the mind as opposed to smooth flow you could have got from SPB or even a lesser singer than SPB). And the 3 better songs to Mano and Nadanddhaal irandadi to SPB - Mr Rasiah what were you thinking then?

Maniye manikkuyile/Nadodi thendral - again Mano is the sore point. In oru ganam oru yugamAga, the song literally gets a facelift when IR suddenly enters in the second saranam.

Pandiyanin raajjiyathil Gujjalaala - AmAm nAn indha arpudhamAna lyricsai sidhaichu pOttuttEn. Except that it wasnt me. For several years, these were the lyrics I thought thanks to Mano's singing. He literally struggles with his tongue when he has to say uyyalAla and that heavy voice delivery at that point(which I alluded to above) - like watching Badri against Steyn. Out of his depth. Forced to do things he cannot do.

Rasa nallathan yosichu kuduttirukkaru. Back then, I too was enraged that someone is stepping on Bala's shoe. But then, the shoe's too big to fill (literally, I know), these other guys are just filling up as you cannot spread Bala thin (aiyo no pun-ggaa) over all those bloody songs. Mano can be labled as Bala-lite, but he has his uses. Raja knew. You are a bigger fan of Raja, you should be able to answer your question man.

You put the problem in a nutshell. I generally pride myself on being able to distinguish Deva and IR 100% of the times unlike many staunch IR fans who confess having been fooled a few times. But Hariharan was the closest that came to spoiling my record. Songs I were not too sure about IR with Hari:

manasa thotta kAdhal & Diana Diana (Kaadhal Kavidhai, although by the time the song ended, i was 100% sure it is IR. Didnt like them much though)
Some Kasi Songs(Which I knew beforehand was IR but they sounded so pedestrian)

My sister got married during the peak of such Deva-Hariharan tortures on TN. Her wedding cassette is filled with such songs (ulagathil uLLa adhisayam ettu unnaiyum sErthu, Cochin madapuraa etc). I was tasked with playing the cassette for visiting relatives for a month or so after. kAdhu raNagaLam. Traumatic memories. I hate to be reminded of my sister's wedding.

Hariharan's problem (with me) is that although he is capable of much better, his reputation in TN is made of such Deva ditties as you exactly outlined. These were sort of a genre wherein the USP of the song was Hariharan and his singing style - which obviously is great for his fans - but not so appealing to a general music lover who expected much more from the song. It didnt help that it was the peak of the telephone luvvs-nakkai vettikaren luvvs-toiletla luvvs movies. The anodyne-ness of Hari, Deva and their songs perfectly suited the anodyne-ness of such movies - and together make for a traumatic memory.

I recall my parents promoting Kasi (they knew I kinda stopped listening to IR then), saying, "Pazhaya Ilayaraja mathiri irukkum". But here's the thing, they showed me video clips of that song!!! Howaboutthat. Double torture!!! Plus it sounded more like Deva doing IR, like the Annamalai phase.

Well, SPB was quite busy in multiple languages and Raja was extremely prolific - scoring for close to 50 movies a year.

So, picking Mano seems to be a logical PMP stuff - i.e. where gold-plating was not necessary. Like those 'madhura marikkozhundhu vAsams' and similar pasunEsan stuff.

Though Mano was considered by many to be mimicking SPB, I don't think he was used 'at the expense' of SPB.

OTOH, after the arrival of Mano, chances for Malaysia seemed to have gone drastically down (especially the IR numbers). Were there PMP reasons there too? (like MV focussing more on acting / producing etc) Or, was there any ladAi story?

At karakAttakkAran time (1989), it looked like all were balanced.

kudagu malai - Mano (also mundhi mundhi)

grouch, I assume you mean "decent singing and output" by "get the job done". If yes, Mano is epic fail in that velaikkaaran song and many others I can quote. There are songs like Nee oru kaadhal, where the brilliance of Chitra and Raja saves the song from absolute murder, and therefore the song ends up serviceable. And then there are songs like the aforementioned velaikaaran song when the others dont do enough to balance the enormous negativity that mano infuses. Whence the song conks out. Therefore Mano hasnt done his job.

I am unbiased and fair - there are songs like deivangaL kaNN pArthadhu when he gets the job done. But wee cannot have a catch-all defence based on that

SPB was very busy singing in various languages, esp. in Hindi, and he had a throat operation in the early 90's after straining his voice as a result of singing that song (can't remember the name) from Anjali! Singer Mano has become a very popular face at households thanks to his presence across TV shows in multiple channels. Having earned quite a name for himself for his performances, he is all set to do a role in the film 'Vetriselvan', directed by Rudhiran.

Vetriselvan features Ajmal and Radhika Apte in the lead. In it, Mano is expected to play a college professor. We last saw Mano on the big screen with Singaravelan which had Kamal and Kushboo in the lead. It would be great to see the singer back in Kollywood once again.
