Tamil Film Music from the word go, started its glorious innings in the 1930s. In 1940s it took off rapidly and then no looking back. We can come across many masterpieces of legends in this decade. To start with a concert form featuring in the film Sabapathy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4hYlr7XXak

Sabapathy was a great entertainer and hilarious moments throughout the film featuring T.R. Ramachandran and Kali N. Rathnam were rip roaring and appeal even today. But it also had very good songs and the music was arranged by the Saraswathi Stores Music Troupe. The concert by P.A. Periyanayaki is a notable one and herself giving an on-screen presence added to the value. Directed and produced by A.T. Krishnaswamy and Av. Meyyappan, the star cast included Padma as the heroine, who was famous as a model for Lux Soap, then K. Sarangapani, C.T. Rajakantham, Mangalam and others.

Sabapathy is an ever-green classic.

Dear Raghavendran Sir,

My best wishes to this new thread which for sure would unearth many rare & laudable gems of 1940s in the days to come.

Thank You ! Here's My Pick,

THE SUPREME HIT SONG OF 1940s

"Manmadha Leelayai Vendrar Undo"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt3MRCvAtao

The Singing Monarch M.K.Thyagaraja Bhagavathar & Glamour Queen T.R.Rajakumari at their romantic best.

What a charukesi juice from the GR music-juice centre.

The legend from Papanasam proves in the Saahithyams that romance is also his cup of tea.

Haridas(1944) has high regards in every generation.

114 நாள் ஓடினாலே பெரிய சாதனை ! 114 வாரம் ஓடியது என்றால்.....அப்பப்பா............!

["Haridas" ran at Chennai Broadway Talkies from 16.10.1944 to 19.12.1946 for a record period of 795 days (nearly 114 weeks)].

Warm Wishes,
Pammalar.

STARCAST

T. R. Ramachandran Anjali Devi R.S. Manohar T. V. Kumudhini Mynavathi K. Sarangapani T.P. Muthulakshmi V.K. Ramasami K. A. Thangavelu ‘Pulimoottai’ Ramasami P.D. Sambandam T.R.B. Rao T.E. Krishnamachari K. V. Srinivasan Ramaiah Sastri K. Srinivasan Chandran ‘Ponvayal’ Susheela (dance)

‘Kalki’ (Ra. Krishnamurthi ) is rightly hailed as one of the finest writers of Modern Tamil Literature and maestro of historical fiction, a genre he virtually developed single-handedly and made it almost an art form with his classic novels like ‘Sivakamiyin Sapatham’, ‘Paarthiban Kanavu’ and others.

..
Music was composed by the noted Classical Carnatic musician also sadly neglected today, Thuriayur Rajagopal Sarma and R. Rajagopal under the supervision of another forgotten theater personality N.P. Abdul Khader. He was a singer, composer, stage actor and had several such talents and skills, and was active in Tamil theatre and also in enacting in gramophone ‘drama sets.’ which were popular in those days. Today few remember him..

Dear Swarup and friends,
You can without hesitation include films of 30s here. The title is suggestive as its take off is arrived for discussion.

MANY OF YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD OF THE FILM "TOOFAN QUEEN" mentioned in the book of Film News Ananthan. Here is a rare chance to see it with audience. VINTAGE HERITAGE is screening this film as detailed below. Make use of it.

An old thread in The Hub about MKT. I do not know either Tamil or Hindi and may be making some mistakes. I saw some Tamil and Hindi movies in the forties and fifties possibly starting with Rajamukti and Ratan. So there is some exposure and I still listen to some of these songs.

There is an inersting article by Stephen Putnam Hughes "What is Tamil about Tamil Cinema?", in South Asian Popular Culture, vol.8, no.3. October 2010,213-219 discussing the early days of Tamil Cinema. The early influences of the North where films were made to later politics. An example of early influences is this song from Chintamani 1937
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gFEXyJeDn4
which seems similar to Shanta Apte song from Amar Jyoti 1936
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV2P9nYjzSw
Putnam's article is worth a read I think. I am not sure whether iot is freely available. I have a copy and if anybody is interested, I can send iot by e-mail. My e-mail address

Good one RR! The part where he demonstrates how a different raaga for "துன்பம் நேர்கையில்..." would have scared the little girl is quite amusing. His advice, especially for today's composers, is: "பொருள் உணர்ந்தால் தான் இசை அமைக்க முடியும்".

RD: I wrote about this song in 'thiraiyil ilakkiyam' series under the title, "paasamaa kObamaa". Desh for paasam and Atana for kobam. The movie 'Or iravu' was released in 1951. In some thread I discussed 'navarasam' in ragas ! :) Atana depicts anger and valor ! :)
