Alright, I am caving in. There is nothing wrong with remakes as long as it’s done well. Billa is a good example. In Hollywood, there are many such examples.
So, this is just fanboy fantasy. Why not take a film from our own Tamizh film industry and remake it with some script changes?
And this is blasphemy, but I’d like to see Gowravam remade
Cast: Rajini as arrogant but brilliant barrister Rajinikanth (Imagine Title card reads, Rajini as Rajini). Madhavan as his nephew Kannan.
Script changes: Drop the Iyer accent. More courtroom drama. No death at the end, just a defeated lawyer learning his lesson. Kannan, is not the abiding nephew who later reluctantly take on his uncle, but as fiery as the uncle and devious about taking over uncle’s market. Intha padattula amma-va thavira nallavenggele irukka kudathu
More later. What say you?

Grouch, not bad at all. Although Rajini has already done a modified version of the barrister. Interestingly, the last point you allude(nallavanga) is prominent there also. For all his philandering, Chakravarthy is pious about his daughter in law and doesn't even plan to bump off Goundamani - who is harassing him with blackmail. Ofcourse he plans to bump off Saritha but only as an extreme measure. His only weakness is philandering. You could look at it as realistic - afterall he is just a minor millionaire in Coiambatore not a Don from Mumbai to bump off characters per his whim and convenience - or "Major hero of the times cannot be a out and out villain" syndrome

Yeah, Netrikann is definitely sort of remake. I'd like a serious drama, bristling with tension. The nephew character should have had it up here with his uncle's reputation (tanni vera), and decides to go against him because of the Mohandas case as an excuse, when he wants to topple the old Lawyer. At the end, when the old man is broken down, the entire community is aghast, and the nephew is viewed as a no-go, though he won. He "killed" the old man, he's no good. So kadaisiyila nobody wins. Eppadi, remba morbid-a illa?
Enakku terinji Gouravam was a 1973 release.

I say go for it.
Just one caveat :
The artists of the originals (or their rightful heirs) should be compensated with a decent share from the proceeds of the new venture. No "lump sum" settlement but a "share of the proceeds similar to royalty".

Before six months, saw a sivaji sir's movie "Edhiroli". While switching through the channels, incidentally saw some scenes of the movie, liked it and saw the whole movie. It was thoroughly engaging.I don't remember much about it as it's been 6 months. But have a feeling that it will definitely suit today's trend.Surya or Karthi can play the lead role...

Groucho,
It is an excellent movie to remake with adequate changes to suit today's audiance. It's been a while we have seen a court room drama movie....As you said, unlike original, the new version should be more ruthless and cat and mouse game with intelligent argument, facts and technical details. The origninal movie deals with murder case spinned around life insurance.... I would expect the new version should be more of corporate law suit or political game change or something on this line..... I am eagerly expecting a corporate world based tamil movie.....

Husband/wife tension has been handled many times in different ways. Mannan, and of recent, Priyasakhi. But what made Savale Samali click is the politics behind it. The movie is out and out pro-socialism (or communism, or marxism, whatever). NT represented workers, and JJ represented the opressing employer (capitalist pigs?). The dialogues are laced with political tension between classes and ideologies. I think this should be in the forefront, rather than the usual poor husband vs rich wife plot.
Thanks for bringing that film up, Venkirram, it is indeed ripe for a remake. Somewhere NOV is curling in fetal position.
