93.3 FM on my local station has been blaring some classic rock songs which have my blood pumping in a jiggy!! Need to share these songs and say "Whoa".. so here it goes..
LAW and ORDER or Freedom and non conformance - Two gems

1. Bon Jovi - not a great fan of him or his songs - but this one is ROCKIN and cool... The guitar, lead and bass are so groovy and the lyrics - makes me feel like buyin a bike, wear an outfit and just drive on a long road.. DEAD OR ALIVE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oot0GtjQuxQ

2. Styx - never heard of them.. yet this song took my like a tiger attacking a deer. surprised and shocked and overjoyed... OH MAAMA - RENEGADE.. The lyrics are awesome and the harmony are awesome, the fast beat that blasts through and the singing and lead guitar again kick up more dust than a sandstorm in sahara...

Awesome stand that Bruce Springsteen takes against the war mongers.
The thump you feel for every beat is not just for the drums (which is very very impressive the way it swings between playing its line and then joining the main line with lyrics), the keys that come in between are one of the simplest, yet honestly best ones you can hear all your life.. And offcourse the master singing his all life into it!! WHOA Bruce!!

//Bala, I agree with your views on the recognition. Since I am digressing too much, still would like to know yours and KV's views on them on why you say so, we can continue in PM. I have never heard their music after 80s/early 90s. It seems they were not doing good in 90's/2000s. I will end linking their biography: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/d/def+leppard/biography.html//
Deff Leppard, Bon Jovi-a rock aattathula serthukka manasu varla. Too "light" for rock. By light, i don't mean to compare that with metal or hard rock.

V_S
8th June 2012, 01:00 AM
Bala,
As I mentioned in PM, I was loving Def Leppard in 80s as much I loved Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Metallica, Steely Dan, Van Halen, Mega Death, Guns 'n' Roses, Bon Jovi, Deep Purple and so on. At-least their first four albums; On Through the Night, High 'N' Dry, Pyromania and Hysteria were thoroughly enjoyable and there were enough rock elements to be classified under Hard Rock/Heavy Metal. Hysteria being my most favorite album, every one of them right from the title song, Animal to Armagadden It, I really loved it.

The last album which I listened; Adrenalize (released in early 90s), I too didn't like much. I think from mid 90's they were deviating from Hard Rock/Heavy metal to Glam-metal (as KV pointed out) and Pop. To be honest, I have never listened to them after Adrenalize. Even many links says that they were good at the start and won many accolades.
http://www.lyricsfreak.com/d/def+leppard/biography.html

So from your posts, I guess you are talking about Def Leppard from his mid 90s where he kind of lost his touch on rock. Or you have never convinced right from his first album that it had Rock?. This is what I would like to know also with reasons, if possible, since I thoroughly enjoyed his first four albums, which can be classified as Hard Rock. The starting guitar pieces in Hysteria even proves that. I have already posted the youtube link for that.

V_S
8th June 2012, 07:29 AM
These songs were blasting in our college hostels. Def Leppard's 'Rock of Ages', 'foolin', 'Pour some sugar on me'. You might listened these, but just in case, Please hear the ferocious guitars and racy rhythms through out these songs.

Rock of Ages. Please hear the guitar crescendo from 2:48-3:18. Pulsating!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJU0Uso2Ywg

Foolin'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlulT5Yk0t8

Pour some sugar on me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFgmQ-kUy1k

I feel all the above three falls under Rock/Hard Rock. As I hear and understand, the guitar riffs are highly distorted in these songs, even though 'Rock' also has the same distorted guitars, the tone of these guitar are more rough, compared to normal Rock guitar. Also coming to the rhythm aspect, I think Hard Rock rhythm normally is very fast and uneven and sometimes very aggresive with more usage of hi-hats often to show the power, unlike Rock Guitar which is normally even. In these senses, Hysteria song could be classified more closer towards Rock, than Hard Rock, but I could not feel light. Lyrics is another important aspect in these songs. If you consider the lyrics, as per my reading and understanding, if the lyrics convey anger, depression, death etc, then that would classify under Hard Rock/Heavy metal, but in all these songs, the lyrics were mainly about love, so just from the lyrical stand point, it cannot be Hard Rock, but the singing and the orchestration does not convey that. Anyway, I think we are not considering the lyrics at all. So, if you just ignore the lyrics, then the above three songs can fall under Hard Rock having satisfied the orchestration/arrangments/singing aspects.

Bala,
You were saying that Def Leppard songs (I think in general) are too light for you to be considered as Rock. But you were also saying, it does not mean, I could not compare with hard rock or metal. I don't get this. Please explain. If it is light for even Rock, how it can be considered for Hard Rock/Metal. Hard Rock is more heavier right?
KV,
On the other hand, you were saying they are not even Hard Rock or Heavy metal, but just glam-rock/glam-metal. Please explain.

Also please listen to the above three songs, in case you have not heard and let me know if this is still light and could not be even considered as Rock. We (our friends) normally consider Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits et. al as Rock (don't want to go into its sub-genres) and Def Leppard, Van Halen, AC/DC et. al as normally Hard Rock and Mega Death, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, et. al as Heavy Metal. Normally Hard Rock and Heavy Metal genre can step on each other depending on the songs. Please correct me. Nice to have such a discussion, having spent our youth/college days listening to these bands, it is better to know the terms correctly and the reasoning.

I could never perceive Def Leppard as a hard rock band (even the earlier ones). Too light, too straight for my liking. Not able to articulate it any better

That was a terribly phrased sentence from me
I just meant to say they were light but not akin to the rock acts that are not hard/metal. That is, just by calling them "light", i don't put them in the category of (what i perceive) as "genuine" rock acts which cannot be called hard/metal

Ozzy - no great moments, kind of templated.
IMO U2 are the most overrated and over celebrated band in the world, next only to The Beatles (same league as Rolling Stones). Aerosmith, Ozzy, 'laam oru range. I don't mind Maiden and Purple but not a big fan either.

Clapton - some selected-a? Blasphemy  Clapton is right up there with Floyd, Zeppelin, Dire Straits....

groucho070

I agree, the U2 after 1997 was crap, but enna pannurathu hc fan ayi tolaichittEn. Kinda like Beatles after Yellow Submarine. They've been making same shit from 2000. Clapton, selected means the classics that they keep playing again and again, you know, Cocaine, Wonderful tonight, blah, blah, other than that how many other songs, other albums, that collaboration with BB King, can we tolerate? Plus he's Blues guy, and Blues is like whiskey, straight-a edukka konjam kashtam.

Floyd, Led Zep, Dire Straits, you dig 90% of the stuff they make, minimum. They are indeed up there, but not our dear old Slowhand (though he made some good shit with Cream).

By the way, U2's One is terribly overrated, there are better songs from the same album, like this one, similar theme (guitar checkout pannungga)(Jack White covered this for Great Gatsby) (intha parentheses podura pazhakam vittutolayenda grouch):

Thanks Bala for your honest comments. Somehow they got into me since my college years and found them very interesting, especially their first four albums. Please listen to Rock of Ages and Pour Sugar on me, in case you have not, I felt they did their best in those soundtracks.

Thanks Dilbert, grouch and Bala for your picks, especially the Dire Straits and U2. Really enjoyed each one of them.

My pick for today is The Spirit of Radio by Rush. One of my dearest song. More of progressive rock. This was released in 1980, but I discovered in late 80s through my friends at college. Guitar literally speaks throughout. With the hard guitar at the background very soft vocal gives a tremendous contrast. From 3:50 the song takes a different direction only to come back and again go away. Tremendous change of scales there. Another big relief is the song is not based on love which is mostly the case. More than the tune, the lyrics in this song was appreciated by everyone that time. It was way way ahead of its time and reflects even today's scenario. Glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity. Wow! what a line! :notworthy: Few lines here:

All this machinery making modern music
Can still be open hearted Not so coldly charted
It's really just a question of your honesty, yeah your honesty
One likes to believe in the freedom of music
But glittering prizes and endless compromises
Shatter the illusion of integrity

For the words of the prophets were written on the studio wall, concert hall
And echoes with the sounds of salesman

King Crimson was good, but more of instruments than the vocals. But amazing work by the guitarists. Hearing for the first time. Thanks Bala. Good to know that you also listened to Spirit of the Radio last night. Exactly those kind of songs were excellent companions during night-out studies and exam times. I too loved to watch MTV those days during DD days and also during the start of cable TV days. I remember watching almost 5 to 6 hours continuously (at my friend's house) and noting down the songs for recording. Was also crazy about Grammy awards telecast right from my college years till late 90s. Unforgettable days!

Very good list. I heard few from this list; Sound Garden, Smashing Pumpkins (is it Bullet with Butterfly wings? I like that very much), and of course REM and Beatles. Beatles, I have almost their entire collection. I came to know about Sound Garden only in mid 90s. Just now listening to 'No Rain' and others. 'No Rain' was interesting and the video was very good too. After late 90s/early 2000s I never updated myself and slowly lost interest in western contemporary music, as I tend to see many repetitions and unimpressive performances. They say Rock music (not the rock and roll) was best in 60s and 70s. Rock music was also slowly coming down by late 80s and 90s. The recent western soundtrack I listened many times was 'Songs About Jane' (2002) by Maroon 5. Since the benchmark set by those legends in 60s/70s/80s/90s could not be broken by others. May be it has to do with my taste too. When I rediscovered the same thing happening in our film industry, could not appreciate much. Oru salippu vanthiruchu, unless the tune is new and fresh (despite any brilliant stuff they show in orchestration) with no hint of western tune and singing. That's why I go back often to 30s/40s/50s to discover the forgotten western classics.

Groucho bhai ! sometimes we forget how blessed we are. We will never get to see these kind of legendary bands..ever again. I was waiting in the lobby for Roger waters concert
a kid in front of me may be 15- 16 is asking a question. Who is pink floyd? his adult supervisor says oh its just a band from 70s , and he was the main guy in that band pointing at roger waters poster.Thats how we are passing the so called "ROCK legacy" to the next generation.
I would say except few bands who are trying hard with laser shows and HD graphics to stay afloat.. we can call " THE CLASSIC ROCK" "TRUE ROCK" an extinct species pretty soon.

Very happy to see many pages of discussion in this section. Keep at it, gentlemen!

V_Sji, going back to the DefLep discussion, like I’d said earlier, I somehow don’t find their music interesting. The first hurdle, before we get on to the technicalities, is their style of song writing – predominantly mushy - adhu nEkku allergy. You could visualize Barb-wire-Pam, in a chokingly tight leather outfit, with an (unplugged) electric guitar in hand – an image screaming ‘how’s that for attitood’? And a Defflep song would be the perfect BGM for this. This has been the imagery that has stuck on, almost permanently, in my mind, since the time I first heard their songs. I can’t seem to get rid of this prejudice and give them a serious listening. Some blind faith tells me that I ain’t missing much! MannichukOngo vsji!
So, musically, to me, their riffs sound similar, the rhythm pattern is the mostly the same 4x4, and that too in one ‘standard beat’ format (paavam, avaru enna pannuvar) and their songs, whatever few I’ve heard, sound too syrupy and overly simplified (adhula thappu onnum illa, aana enakku pidikkala, avalo dhaan). It’s that ‘expect the expected’ feeling which makes me hit the ‘next’ button right away (if there happens to be such a song in my playlist).

If we are to discuss ‘hard rock’ as a genre, I’m afraid we’d be ‘all over the pitch’ for it’s that wide a subject with several sub-genres and varieties under it. So, for the sake of giving some sort of a ‘structure’ to the discussion, let’s try to go in chronological order of release. (Now, what I’m trying to write here is from my personal preference and familiarity with the music of certain bands, which implies there are very high chances I’d miss out some really big names)

1966-67: Piper at the gates of dawn.
Floyd’s, pardon the cliché, burst-into-the-scene act. The initial phase of Floyd is my personal favorite in their career graph.
<peter alter> Syd Barrett is probably one of the definitive musical minds in rock music history </alert>.
Yeah, you’d have already heard and read this before, I’ll bet. What’s the big deal in composing songs that sound like nursery rhymes, one may ask. When I say revolutionary, I’m not talking See Emily Play or Matilda Mother (lovely songs, but that’s for another day), but referring to 3 songs from the album, that to me are among Floyd’s best.

Interstellar overdrive (this is the original version that was on the tape; youtube has the extended 17mins version, the beast)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jq5t7Y_BYIM

Astronomy domine:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJh9OLlXenM

Lucifer Sam:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbIMx2MYNXk

No, not that these are the songs that’d immediately pop up in one’s mind when speaking of hard rock (especially given the giant shadow of ‘psychedelia’ looming large over them), but these songs, in my personal theory, sowed the seeds for hard rock. One can see the dominant electric rhythm guitars on the riffs (which in itself is a very ‘rock’ thing, aint it?), the free flowing drums, the crazy solos and pounding bass lines. And it’s not just the ‘they did it first hence they’re great’ factor here; the musical depth of these songs stand testimony to their greatness.
(Was this type/style of music attempted before this? Me thinks no. If there was, I’d stand corrected of course; like I said, this is just my personal theory which works strictly within the little boundaries of the bands and music I’ve listened to so far.)

Barrett, periyavanga sonnadhu pOla, shine on, you crazy diamond!

na thaachika pOren. meendum sandhippom. happy trippin'!

Great post KV and some excellent Pink Floyd songs. I respect your views on Def. I too never said they are good overall, may be the time I listened to them; my teens and college years, when everything looks pretty around. As Bala said, let us A2D. On Pink Floyd songs which you quoted from his first album; Piper at the gates of dawn, are truly exceptional interms of innovation and depth. As I also observed starting mid-60s till mid 80s was the finest period for Rock music and Pink Floyd were the ones who sowed the seeds and took this genre to exceptional heights, especially on the psychedelic . Instellar Overdrive; those long rhythm guitar riffs with some unique experimentation and sounds giving 'psychedelic', 'hallucination' effect and feels like going into some cosmic trip, it could have served well as a wonderful score for films like Return of the Jedi or Star Wars. Sometimes I feel it was too experimental and asks for attention, but the other two, Astronomy domino, Lucifer Sam and my favorite The Scarecrow is absolutely fantastic. Shine on you crazy diamond is a classic, classicer and classicest! Should I say more. It is 26 minutes long. For a song in this genre, how audacious to introduce the trumpets? Truly marvelous!.

Thanks for mentioning about a genius mind Syd Barrett (but wasted in time?). Whenever I think of Syd Barrett one song immediately comes to my mind which is very rare. It is Lucy Leave. It is unfortunate that he has to leave the group so early.

"And the best song of last 60 years is..."

"Let the fearsome arguments, debates and disagreements begin! Legendary British music magazine NME is turning 60 and it has boldly declared what it deems to be the 100 greatest tracks of its lifetime. Given all the amazing music that’s been produced since 1952, the top 10 is flat-out shocking. While both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones are represented, neither produced the NME’s best-ever song. They didn’t even make the top 10. The number one honour went to…. Joy Division for their 1980 signature song 'Love Will Tear Us Apart,' followed by the curiously-popular-in-England-only band Pulp for 'Common People.'

Weirdly, both the Beach Boys and the Stone Roses scored two songs in the top 20 and yet Elvis Presley, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, U2, the Police, Prince and Adele are conspicuously absent. Here it is:

The experimentations of the early Ennio Morricone sowed seeds of psychedlic/progressive movement. I'm thinking early 60's, the stuff that immediately follows the classical WCM over the nude skating in Malamondo, which also has Dukes with the leather jacket bikers, how trippy awesome & heavily thematic!

while on Nederbeat, 'Friday on My Mind' by Dukes takes you through bad weeks. Beauty lies in its simplicity.

Malamondo is making sense through nonsense, the suggestion of thematic relevance from nude skating to leather biking isn't heavy. However, it takes special skill to write the narration here. And to scout for the weird, imagine the scope of later mondo series. The Anti-American ones which you've always denied to carry any sense of truth or importance, and rejected as a commie patch-job.

Ennio does a varied sense of echoes, jungle beats, scratches and choral psychedelia, all trippy atmospherics no doubt. But still the man is creating his own genre, I don't think there are 'rock' elements to this particular work. Now, one might say he might have influenced the generation to come.

Quite a few of his early 60's innovations might have preceded the Rock movements, though it's not explored with any academic interest (As it should). Modern bands like Oasis have admitted the influence, got from one their playlists, the piece in "Violent City"/"The Family".

In context of the discussion, my preferred Manchester band remains "Joy Division", though they transcend genres (punk, rock, metal)... Surprised to see that list with them on top. They're positively beyond ROCK.

'Voice of the soul' by Death (from the album 'The Sound Of Perseverance').
A testament to the fact that metal, especially death & thrash metal, is not just about a bunch of long haired dudes in black tees doing deep-throated growling while incessantly scratching on the electric guitars, but rather something more profound and musically captivating. The melody lines in this composition are really intricate and beautifully woven, with an acoustic guitar playing the rhythm and electric guitars, the lead (no drumming at all!). The accentuation from 1:10 - 2:00 and then again from 3:08 - 3:29 with two lead guitars playing in tandem can be hair-raising experience for any guitar fan. Probably one of the best instrumental songs in the history of metal and maybe Chuck Schuldiner's best ever.

"Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin.

For those who are not aware : "Stairway to Heaven" is a song by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, released in late 1971. It was composed by guitarist Jimmy Page and vocalist Robert Plant for the band's untitled fourth studio album (often referred to as Led Zeppelin IV). It is often referred to as one of the greatest rock songs of all time.

The song, running eight minutes and two seconds, is composed of several sections which increase in tempo and volume as the song progresses. The song begins as a slow acoustic-based folk song accompanied by recorders before electric instrumentation is introduced. The final section is a high-tempo hard rock section highlighted by an intricate guitar solo by Page and Plant's wailing vocals, ending with Plant's a cappella delivery of the final line: "And she's buying a Stairway to Heaven".

"Stairway to Heaven" was voted #3 in 2000 by VH1 on its list of the 100 Greatest Rock Songs, and was placed at number 31 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". It was the most requested song on FM radio stations in the United States in the 1970s, despite never having been officially released as a single there.

"Stairway to Heaven" continues to top radio lists of the greatest rock songs, as well as topping a 2006 Guitar World readers poll of greatest guitar solos. On the 20th anniversary of the original release of the song, it was announced via U.S. radio sources that the song had logged up an estimated 2,874,000 radio plays – back to back, that would run for 44 years solid. As of 2000, the song had been broadcast on radio over three million times.

Without further ado, here's the song (more than 70 million views) :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9TGj2jrJk8

Here are the lyrics of this number :

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to Heaven
When she gets there, she knows if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Ooh-ooh-hoo, hoo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
And she's buying a stairway to Heaven

There's a sign on the wall, but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

Ooh it makes me wonder
Ooh it makes me wonder

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking

Ooh it makes me wonder
Ooh it really makes me wonder

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune,
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter

Oh-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-ho-oh

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on

And it makes me wonder
Oh-oh-ho

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind, oh

(Ahh-ahh ahh-ahh)
(Ahh-ahh ahh-ahh)
(Ahh-ahh ahh-ahh)
(Ahh-ahh ahh-ahh)

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadow's taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll

And she's buying a stairway to Heaven

I Love Rock N Roll - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (25 million views)

"I Love Rock 'n' Roll" is a rock song written in 1975 by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker of Arrows, who recorded the first released version. The song was later made famous by the hit version by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts in 1981. "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"'s gritty, black-and-white music video received heavy play from the just-launched MTV network. In it, Jett and The Blackhearts travel to a small, dingy bar and proceed to excite the drunken crowd by performing the song and yelling out its famous chorus. This song had topped the charts in 1982 in many countries, including the US Billboard Hot 100.

One of my favorite albums of PINK FLOYD is THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON.

The Dark Side of the Moon is the eighth studio album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released in March 1973. It built on ideas explored in the band's earlier recordings and live shows, but lacks the extended instrumental excursions that characterised their work following the departure in 1968 of founder member, principal composer and lyricist, Syd Barrett. The Dark Side of the Moon's themes include conflict, greed, the passage of time, and mental illness, the latter partly inspired by Barrett's deteriorating mental state.

The Dark Side of the Moon was an immediate success, topping the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart for one week. It subsequently remained in the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988. With an estimated 50 million copies sold, it is Pink Floyd's most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide.
