I don't see the discussion getting personal today. I repeat again, Sachin is selected without poll because what he had done in ODIs, not because he has most number of fans in this forum. Maddy,
1. Sachin-kellaam muscles flex pannanum-nukooda avasiyame illai. 'thalaivar paduthukkitte jeyippaaru'. And you know this too.
2. LM's reaction on this is perfectly understandable. Fan following irukkaradhaale Sachin-ku exception-nu illai. It is the other way around. Since Sachin is exceptional he has got such fan following. And having a poll to confirm that would have been a pointless excercise (as per Plum & 19 and I would echo the same). appadiye poll vachurundhaalum, biceps kaattaradhukkaaga poll vachaangannu sollalaam. Sachin fans ennadhaan pannanumnu neengale sollunga.
3. You can react the same if Akram gets questioned. Even though I am a fan of Akram/Warne, I wouldn't feel aggreived or anything if they are not selected unanimously. In fact having a poll for Akram/Warne is the best thing as that will confirm their marana mass (similar to Lara's show of mass for No.3 slot).

Considering only my posts (Dnt want to talk abt / for others)
Ur points were - Nobody is an exception to poll process. Also, u talked abt odhungifying for reasons of some of ur fav players (IIRC u said this for Mo Yo) may lose out in the process.
My point was, if somebody is refusing to accept 1+1 = 2 (Read: Sachin being selected in a team without a poll), I am not willing to stay in that place. That somebody may refute this equation / fact / opinion or whatever. But, for me, discussion on such lines is meaningless and they are done just for the sake of it.
Also, what is the meaning of "personal references" in ur statement? I can understand if somebody says personal insults. But, indha referenec matter pureela.

Am I imagining or are you actually implying that we are afraid of Sachin losing the poll?
And wrt to the logic, Lara is a great player no doubt but is he consistent in ODIs? He is behind Sachin in that aspect. Lara had good competitor for No.3 slot in Ponting and hence a poll made a lot of sense. IIRC, LM wanted Ponting for No. 3 but look what happened in the end.

As I have explained many times: my role is 'prAdhu kuduthA pArppEn'. Largely because I have a thick skin and expect most others also to.
Nearly nothing as such ever strikes me as offensive and almost always depends on people and context. Some things are blatant transgressions inadmissible in any context (like poor taste cussing). These are perhaps the only situations where I intervene suo moto.

Why are you refusing to accept Sachin doesn't have any competitors in opening? If I ask this, is that a personal attack/reference (or whatever you call it)?

Ningale podathappo naanum podalai. But still if anybody wants to vote for sachin here are the reasons.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achievements_of_Sachin_Tendulkar#ODI
Most runs in an ODI Innings: Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for maximum number of runs scored in one ODI innings. He is the only batsman to score 200 runs (147ball 25x4 3x6) in an ODI against South Africa.[11][12]
Most runs: 17,598 Runs at the rate of 45.12 runs for every time he has gotten out (as of 18 October 2010). He is the leading run scorer in the ODI format of the game and the only player ever to cross the 14,000-15,000-16,000 and 17,000 run marks.
First player to reach 10,000-11,000-12,000-13,000-14,000-15,000, 16,000 and 17,000 ODI runs.
Holds the record for scoring 1,000 ODI runs in a calendar year. He has done it seven times - 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2007
Tendulkar has scored over 1000 ODI runs against all major Cricketing nations.
Tendulkar is the only batsman to score over 3000 runs against any opponent (Australia). Tendulkar is also the only batsman to achieve the feat runs against two opponents - Sri Lanka is the other team.
After Sachin crossed the 10,000-run mark in ODIs, only seven other players have managed to cross the milestone: (Sanath Jayasuriya, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara, Inzamam ul Haq, and Jacques Kallis).
Sachin was the fastest to reach 10,000 runs taking 259 innings and has the highest batting average among batsmen with over 10,000 ODI runs
Tendulkar has scored 1833 runs in finals; Tendulkar also ranks very high in terms of all-time averages in finals: among those who've scored at least 1000 runs in finals, only three have a higher average. One of them is India's current coach, Gary Kirsten - in 20 innings, he scored 1019 runs at an excellent average of 69.73. Tendulkar's stats are very similar to those of Viv Richards, who averaged 55.73 at a strike rate of 84.78 in 17 finals.
Tendulkar holds the record for the highest individual score in a One Day International when he scored 200 not out breaking the previous record of 194 in the India v. South Africa ODI on 24 February 2010. This also saw him become the first male cricketer in the planet to score a double century in a One Day International. Earlier Belinda Clark has scored 229* in women cricket.
Tendulkar holds the record for the most fours ( boundaries ) in an innings. He hit 25 fours in the innings against South Africa on on 24 February 2010 when he scored double century.
Only player to score 5, 150+ (186*, 152, 163*, 175 and 200*)scores in ODI cricket, followed by Sanath Jayasuriya of Srilanka with 4, 150+ scores in ODI
Centuries and Fifties record:
Most centuries: 46
Only cricketer to ever score a double hundred in the ODI format - against South Africa at Gwalior, India.
Most centuries against an opponent - 9 vs. Australia.
Most centuries vs. Australia, South Africa, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Pakistan.
Most centuries in Final Matches 6 & India Win All Matches
Most centuries against One Team - Australia 20 (11 test+9 ODI)
Most Fifties: 93.
Highest number of 50+ scores in ODIs - 139 (46 Centuries and 93 Fifties).
Only player to have over 100 innings of 50+ runs along with Ricky Ponting
Most Fifties in World Cup Matches(13)
ODI awards:
Most Man of the Match Awards: 61 Man of the Match Awards
Most Man of the Series Awards: 15 Man of the Series Awards
Calendar Year record:
Most ODI runs in a calendar year: 1,894 ODI runs in 1998.
Most Centuries in a calendar year: 9 ODI centuries in 1998
Partnership Records:
Sachin Tendulkar with Sourav Ganguly hold the world record for the maximum number of runs scored by the opening partnership. They have put together 6,609 runs in 136 matches that includes 21 century partnerships and 23 fifty run partnerships.[13]
The 20 century partnerships for opening pair is also a world record.
Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid hold the world record for the highest partnership in ODI matches when they scored 331 runs against New Zealand in 1999 at the LBS, Hyderabad[14]
Sachin Tendulkar has been involved in six 200 run partnerships in ODI matches - a record that he shares with Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.[15]
Most runs (1,796 at an average of 59.87 as on 20 March 2007) in World Cup Cricket History including 4 centuries & 13 fifties with a best score of 152* against Namibia in 2003 world cup
673 runs in 2003 Cricket World Cup, highest by any player in a single Cricket World Cup
Player Of The World Cup Tournament in the 2003 Cricket World Cup.
523 runs in the 1996 Cricket World Cup at an average of 87.16, making him the highest run scorer in the 1996 World Cup and setting the then record for the highest runs by any player in a single Cricket World Cup - subsequently bettered by himself in the 2003 World Cup
I request all Sachin fans to ignore this poll. That also gives a result!

Why laughing  I would say Ponting gives a tough competition to Lara for No.3. Agree/disagree?
LM, sirichadhu not even half bit kku...
Just to bring to context this whole discussions, Maddy wanted to know why Sachin was selected without polls since every position is being done with polls and i too dont see any harm in having one for Sachin as well - whether he wud win 50-0 or 100-0 wud be immaterial anyways..
I dont understand the logic behind 'its insulting to keep a poll for him' argument when you guys reject the same for other players... that's why i put in my point about Lara. I find it insulting to have a poll for Lara and infact dont even remember if i voted for him (havent voted for any of the positions IIRC) in the poll.. same would be applicable for bowlers, Akram kellam pollaa nu Maddy kepparu, I would back Ambrose.. others wud have many more options - why cant we have the poll - we perhaps might have Venkatesh Prasad as one of the options, but who cares!!
I do agree on the point of a worthy competitor. Ponting is there for #3 and perhaps no opp of that calibre is available for openers (with two slots being available!). But Dilshan laam poll la irukkan insulting is a biased argument illaya?! coz we had Martin/Yousuf etc for #3.. it wasnt a poll with just Lara and Ponting at #3 citing worthiness.. if we had just two choices for the poll for #3 i agree we cud have perhaps done away with the poll for #1 (with the other opener selected)..

Directhit....The reasons are
1)In , ODI's Lara is nowhere comparable to Sachin and people like jayasurya have done far better than Lara. Ponting has a better record than Lara in ODI's.
2)Sachin in undeniably the greatest ODI player ever - now after 90's..
3)Akram may face serious competition from ambrose, mcgrath ..which is not the case with Sachin.
4) Its a privelage that ONLY sachin have and dont expect Lara's and others to to have the same privelage and be holded in the same esteem in ODI's.

[tscii:60d5bd4ecc]Repeat
Rule: all positions need a poll because opinions differ fairly evenly in favour of various candidates
Exception: #1 doesnt need a poll because opinions cannot differ that big here - even sehwag fans vote sachin and in general, even ian chappell, as biased as they can get, cannot deny sachin's'undisputed choice.
This is a classic case of an exception proving the rule - and it is not without reason that such a concept exists among learned and wise folks from whom we ordinary mortals can learn - in that, the exceptional case is unique and represents a polarisation of opinion of thew scale that is normally impossible. Therefore, barring such extraordinary cases, poll is necessary is proven by this very special case.
Exception proving the rule enbadharku idhu dhaan arththam
From your arguments maddy, it seems to me that you do not get this concept. No offence, for this also means that i havent articulated the concept well enough(maybe feeyaar can). This is not a personal référence - just an observation.
To me, exception proving a rule is an important concept because very often i see people taking this exception and thinking they have disproven the rule. [/tscii:60d5bd4ecc]

pointe adhuthan!..Lara is not worthy of a "unopposed candidate" in ODI's. People like Aravindha,Ponting are there and the fact that Lara is not the best One down player in ODI's ...I dont find the reson behind this point at all...
If at all Lara has proved to be the best ODI one down - I am damn sure that he would have been selected without a poll..considering his reputation in Test matches/Cricket...
If there is no warne - murali is unoppsed
If there is no murali - warne would be unopposed spinenr in the side...simple!
but ippo as there are two greats - a poll would obviously be put up if the combination requires just one spinenr and three pacemen.
If the combination requires two spinners in the team - I am damn sure that warne and murali will be selected without a poll.

There are many players who have done better than Lara in no.3 position. Ponting has almost 3 times of runs of Lara. Whichever way you look at it, Lara's stature in ODIs is significantly lesser. To be fair to Lara, he had accomplished much more in tests and was always expected to replicate the same in ODIs. That's a burden he has to live with.

2. LM's saying that anyone choosing other than tendulkar is not following cricket properly.......
I asked you one simple question: "Do you think there are two opening batsmen better than Sachin" and you answered no. Then where is the personal reference against *you*? I was talking about anyone who thinks there are better openers than Sachin.
Why are you refusing to accept Sachin doesn't have any competitors in opening? If I ask this, is that a personal attack/reference (or whatever you call it)?
i felt, asking for a poll itself was from someone who doesent understand cricket......i always would like to keep the arguements abt subject and not personal preferences or capability of people arguing it........
sachin doesent have any competitors in opening - ok........LM, i feel sachin should also come under process/rules and u guys feel he is beyond that.........i really dunno how to resolve this...... :)

Maddy,
There is a difference between understanding cricket and following cricket regularly. And it was never intended to refer you or anyone in this forum.
I don't understand the need of a poll for selecting Sachin when it is established that he is the greatest ODI opener of all time. You bring someone similar for any position and ask for unanimous selection, now that's fair.
If you haven't noticed, I am arguing that Bevan should be an automatic choice for batting at 6.

As I have looked at the strike rate and more 100s and 50s scored by Sehwag because of more no. of matches played by him, I have voted. Since Sridhar has tagged the voters for Sehwag as 'Sachin haters' and further the talk of cricket following made me to post this even though it was mentioned at me.
Just look at #1 position alone.
Sachin Tendulkar #1 (Taking strike from the first ball)
47 Matches 1625 runs HS 120, Ave. 36.11 St.Rate 82.82 2 100s and 9 50s.
Sachin Tendulkar #2 (Non-striker)
272 Matches 12857 runs 200* Ave. 51.22 St.Rate 88.92 40 100s 63 50s.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achievements_of_Sachin_Tendulkar#ODI
After Sachin crossed the 10,000-run mark in ODIs, only seven other players have managed to cross the milestone: (Sanath Jayasuriya, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara, Inzamam ul Haq, and Jacques Kallis).

Maddy, you were waiting to say this, weren't you?
This is provocation. That even the worst family enemy of Sachin will agree that Sachin HAS to be selected as opener in any all time XI is a given. If someone denys this, his cricketing knowledge has to be questioned. Sorry about that.
What reasons from Steve? That he cannot be #1 - who said this poll is for the striker facing the first ball? Even in real matches, Selectors and captain only select opening combinations - they cant dicate who faces first. Several instances have happened where the designated #1 goes to non striker end in a last minute agreement with the partner. So, using that as a basis to create anti-sachin case is . idhukku nInga adhai oru reasonA quote vERA paNdrInga!
I understood your need to conduct a poll so I helped with that. Using that to say your point is proven that Sachin is not an unanimous choice is cynical.

Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest opener in ODIs
a) it's a fact
b) it's an opinion (and possibly your opinion too)
You pick b, which seems extremely curious, because it is much an established fact as it can get.
idhukku ellAm eppidi froop paNNa mudiyin?
fact ellam ok - dont u think Akram - with 502 wickets, 3.89 economy rate and 23.52 average is the greatest fast bowler of all times in ODIs is a fact as well - poll vekkama viduveengala???
Micheal bevan is the best no.6 with bradmaneque average of 53.58- is he a automatic choice - NO??
sachin is miles ahead of other openers and the difference between sachin and other openers>>>>>akram/bevan and their competitors but i sincerely* feel same rules should be set for all......
anyways, what started as questioning the process has ballooned into such a big arguement.....however, i agree to feddy's point that it does tantamount to unneccessary questioning of a good work done by Plum/Sridhar........so i would like to stop here, provided there are no more questions brought in........

Totally agree on this.. the problem is, people who wanted to have a poll for sachin (OR the process as Maddy said) are projected as sachin haters OR questioning sachin's credibility as a opener..
I voted sachin in this poll just before posting this.. :)

Actually Sachin took strike in the matches I specified, because he wanted to attack from the start and asked Sehwag for it. Other than that, there is nothing more than a literal meaning for #1 and #2.

We have Sachin, de Silva, Jayasuriya and (possibly) Steve Waugh as part time bowlers. So we can afford to go for a pure batsman too.
Point taken - #6 nominations can be pure batsmen or medium pace allrounders. Spinning allrounders vENAm please since we have Jaya, sachin and Aravinda already.

Sehwag is much more successful as a opener in tests than ODIs. In fact, people were scratching their heads why Sehwag wasn't getting high scores regularly when the format is most suited for his style. Only after his comeback, he is playing much better in ODIs.
