Steve Waugh
Hansie Cronje &
Andrew Symonds
All these men batted, bowled and fielded brilliantly many times in their career. Besides batsmen, WK and Bowlers, some brilliant fielders also needed for a team. So a brilliant all-round fielder like Symonds nominated here. So far, we almost selected four players who are good fielders and none of them are as quick as these three. As far as fielding is concerned, Inzy may be the weakest link. His running between the wickets the entire world knows. Hence I have to drop Inzy.

It's not about taste or opinion. You may not like Sachin or don't want to vote for him, that's your personal choice. But you cannot disagree that he is the no.1 ODI batsman (opener, to be precise). This poll is an exercise of picking the best in each position, as simple as that.

So suggest anything that includes 5 Batsmen
1. 5 Bat + 2 AR + 1 WK + 1 Sp + 2 P/MP
2. 5 Bat + 1 AR + 1 WK + 1 Sp + 3 P/MP
3. 5 Bat + 1 AR + 1 WK + 2 Sp + 2 P/MP

nyaayamAna pEchu. Gilchrist is almost an automatic choice for wk-bat, if not for #7 not being his normal position in ODIs and the presence of Andy Flower, Dhoni etc as contenders. Even then, their record pales before Gilly and only the position being #7 prevents him from being an unopposed candidate, i think.

I find it quite unnecessary to nominate Bevan as his S/R is 69, and it seems to me he made a reputation out of salvaging situations where a lot of overs were left for a smaller reqd r/r, and used his patience to score at a slow rate and win the match. A significant skill, ofcourse but not worthy of being in the company of sachin, lara et al in the same team. Do you need Bevan to salvage this team?
The Strike rate 69 is the clearest indicator of this.

Plum, Bevan's strike rate is due to a few things.
1) The team he played for (I mean Slater and Taylor opening :banghead:). He was left to salvage bad starts most of the times.
2) The quality of the opposition.
3) Quality of pitches he played most. Aussie pitches of those days aren't really 300+ pitches.
4) 230-240 was considered a match-winning total those days. So strike rates-la konjam leeway kodukkalaam.
Also, look at his performance in tough pitches. The match against England in 2003 world cup was a classic example. He looked totally unperturbed when all the other batsmen were struggling (except Bichel who was living the day of his life :D).

LM,
Inzi/aravindha have always been the leader of their batting line up. I think they can do whatever bevan can do and even better...if they have to play bevans role in this team - consolidation, with better strike rate.

No Plum. The issue has certainly gone out of hands and it has left a bad taste in one's mouth.
While I agree that there is nobody above the system there is a certain way to approach things. People could have made a request to conduct a poll with Tendulkar included for opener slot or should have just remained silent. One thing to note here is That is why I said to Maddy that his timing was wrong but not his question.
Main Thread (http://forumhub.mayyam.com/hub/viewtopic.php?t=14045&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0). The main thread was started in March and it went 25 pages. It's November now. Now making an issue out of it is certainly not worth discussing. Sorry to say this but I find it very very bad. Subsequent arguments have been pointless. And it's useless to be a part of this futile exercise.

It is definitely making a mockery of the process. When people have started discussing about positions 2-5 you sit quiet and now come and ask why there was no poll. It is questioning the integrity of everybody who has taken efforts to do this exercise here. That thread was there for 8 months.

Thats what I mean..If situation requires them(Aravinda/Inzi) to steady the innings - they can do..especially Inzi. The steadying the ship activity would be done in the middle order(no 4 and no 5) itself. There is no requirement of Bevan at 6-ngreen.

Feddy, as I recall he had made the point earlier. Not much attention was paid to it because (possibly) most of those in the thread it is a moot point. But he seems to feel strongly about the process. Poll-um vechAchchu.
For the life of me, I can't understand how anyone would prefer someone else other than Sachin for opening in ODIs.
But I'd suggest taking things at face value and moving on. Second guessing intentions etc. never gets anywhere.

I'm not against Poll. As a hardcore tendulkar fan i am always for democracy. When people (Plum especially) has worked a lot in doing this, it is just the arbitrary questioning that I am not in agreement with.
To say more eloquently I find the questioning to be odd when they themselves are doing a service. An awkward moment so to say.

:oops2: I forget to add the name of Inzy for the second quote.
Arjuna was too clever and places the ball very well so that he can walk a single rather run. Preservation of energy looked like his principle. He preserved his energy by walking those singles and even in the final overs he played more balls very fine left and right of the WK. If needed, he started to hit the balls between long on and mid-wicket and few hits over extra-cover too. But his fielding is average.

Please don't club Ranatunga with Inzi (club paNNA brammAndamAna oru ruvam kidaikkin).
Ranatunga is deceptive. He can sprint between wickets and surprise when the situation demands. Particularly great coordination with de Silva and they used to steal singles. His famous walks were almost never opportunities for 2 that he turned to 1 through lethargy. Simple energy conservation. EllArum lampoonittaanga.
Of course nember 5 for StevvA.
In addition to batting exploits he was the proverbial 'idea bowler'.
Plum
24th November 2010, 07:31 PM
Idea bowler
Yes, feeyaar, the reasons you gave, that's'why i chose Ranatunga as a nomination. I'll also prop him up for captain(if selectedn which is unlikely) for two reasons:
1. He is a leader and rose above tamil-sinhalese to promote murali since he saw that as an end to forge a winning team. It is easy tosay today to say that was a given but i think when murali started out, without an imposing record, a lesser sinhalese captain might not have bothered to fight for murali. He can rise above white man differences if made incharge of them. I am not sure if a white captain can rise above their natural disdain for subcontinentals(never mind the platitudes they spout in conferences and interviews) other than tendulkar. I am not saying ranatunga is altruistic but he is more practical minded in getting his team together to work as an unit.
2. Quite a smart captain.

And Ranatunga is quite capable of big hits too.
In the '96 WC final he is - as usual - playing a supporting role to de Silva. And he plays a lot of intentional edge/ deflection/glance strokes. Then Warne loses control of a ball and it goes too full and Ranatunga deposits it into the squareleg crowd. It was such a - eppo thEvaiyO, appo dhaan weight-ai kaamippOm- moment :-)

ikkada chUdu (http://www.espncricinfo.com/pakvind/content/story/232548.html)
But over five years after the report was finally released, and more than seven years after the inquiry began, Justice Qayyum told Cricinfo that he hadn't wanted a "great player" like Wasim to be banned, especially towards the end of his career. "For Wasim I had some soft corner for him. He was a very great player, a very great bowler and I was his fan, and therefore that thing did weigh with me. Two things - one, I didn't want that the cricket should be deprived of his participation, and the other was that I didn't want that towards the end of his career... he should be banned or something like that. My idea was not to find people guilty and then punish them. It was more of a case where I had to do something to put an end to the practice in future. What had happened had happened. You couldn't turn the clock back but you had to make sure they wouldn't repeat what they were doing."
In his report submitted in 2000, Justice Qayyum - now retired - had fined Akram and recommended he never be allowed to captain Pakistan again. To quote his verdict: "This commission feels that all is not well here and that Wasim Akram is not above board. He has not co-operated with this Commission. It is only by giving Wasim Akram the benefit of the doubt after Ata-ur-Rehman changed his testimony in suspicious circumstances that he has not been found guilty of match-fixing. He cannot be said to be above suspicion."

Yuvi vs S Waugh - doesnt sound right.
If Yuvi, why not Symonds? Whatever Yuvi can do, Symonds can do equally well or better, no?
Fielding: Symonds>>>>> Yuvi
Acting like good fielding: Yuvi>>>>> Symonds
Bowling: Symmo>Yuvi
Batting: Symmo > Yuvi in dependability
= in explosiveness
= in frequency of explosiveness
Temparament and team orientation also mostly = only.
In what way Yuvi scores over symmo?

sourav, what I meant was Symonds is a better version of Yuvi.
Steve Waugh et al bring different strengths to the team. They cant be compared with Symonds. Selecting them is for a different reason than selecting Yuvi/Symonds
But if you want a hard hitting, explosive all rounder who can field well, then, my contention is you are better off with Symonds.
Ofcourse, you are sayingt hat you want Yuvi, period. Which is fine.
