KaundamaNi is the best. Nobody has made me laugh so heartily so so so many times as Koundamani. No not even Nagesh or Vivek. A smile is diffferent, an enjoyable laugh is different but uncontrollable laughter: I have experienced it only with Kaudamani.

He can generate a laugh out of absolutely nothing. He does not need a punchline and often manages his keen sense of timing and terrific delivery. I can quote scores of instances where there is absolutely nothing in the lines , and yet I burst into laughter.

I don't think one could have been a teenager in the 90s without (admittedly dangerously) getting influenced by his trademark cynicism.

Someone said Kaunder's early movies were to be ignored, I disagree. If you have the appetite to sit through the duds in Raj Digital Plus you will often run into Kaunder's gems.

There are a lot of people who do not like his "insulting" dialogues. But I simply love them. The complete lack of respect of any person or institution that is something he developed as a signature , which he displayed in nearly all his movies.

He was among the first to dare to be politically incorrect and encourage people to laugh at things which were hitherto considered taboo. He smashed all reservations.

Being genteel is one's choice but when people say things like ThangavElu was better than Kaundamani because his comedy was decent, that is balderash.

I think we can use this thread to analyze (with anecdotes, of course) certain patterns that were there in Kaundamani's humour. He is a phenomenon and really deserves such thorough appreciation.


Time for celebration but when it subsides there is something I suggest we do

What exactly makes him stand out. Often times it leads me to tangents about humour itself and apart from some of the posts during Comedian thread, best GM role, we have never tried to ask ourselves why this man is such an incomparable delight to us. It will be quite a task, because dissecting humour is unenjoyable / anubavikkaNum, aarayakkoodaadhu etc. We have done it in fits and starts but not at length. I continue to feel - amid all this adulation that GM has never got the appreciation he truly deserves in the history of cinema. It is a combination of general lack of respect for comic talent as well a limitation in the way his humour has been received.

We the Tamils are known to be soft. We grow up listening to "Adakkam AmararuL Uikkum". In early 20th Century Leaders felt the need to shed the soft image. Mahakavi Bharathiyar said "Rowthiram Pazhagu". Thanthai Periyar felt the need to instill self respect and started the Suya Mariyadhai Iyakkam. Kalaivanar NSK tried to instill the pride of Tamilnadu through his songs. During 50s and 60s there was MR Radha the dare devil, not sparing any thing or anybody. But since he identified himself to an ideology, his performance was seen more as propaganda. Years rolled on. During Mid 80s and 90s one man single handedly brought out the ARROGANCE in Tamils. The credit goes to that lean, dark, bald, middle aged man. He did not set out to convey any message, or do any service he stuck to entertainment but done in his original, natural way. He is Koundamani.

Part I

He makes a living on slaughtering sheep and earns peanuts. Indebted to almost everyone in the village, the fall of aadi makes things worse as the mutton sales is very poor. No wonder every one looks at him as such a low level creation. To forget the sorrows while on job he sings his favorite song:

Unable to tolerate this, one or two customers walk off and the mutton shop owner gets irritated and asks him to stop singing. Once done with the job he asks for the pay and the owner says "you owe me money and now ask for the wage, all I can give is this". He hands over a sheep's head. Unable to say a word, he picks up the head in one hand, with the slaughtering weapon (Aruvaal) in another and walks off slowly into the road.

Part II

While on the road, he and a sait spot each other. Obviously he owes a lot to the sait. The chase starts and our man runs into a farm house garden with coconut trees all around. Tripped by a water path way he falls facing upwards. He gets an injury to his big toe and it hurts. The head has slipped from the hand. Ensuring that the sait is no longer following him, he tries to recollect the head without moving his body. Once done he regroups, and starts walking off into the road again.[/tscii:b9b728a82a]

With the head in one hand and Aruvaal in another, our man walks slowly. The public, who sees him, suddenly grows panic and start running away. Unmindful of what is happening around, our man keeps walking. He enters into the market area only to be stopped by two Police Constables. They ask what he has done and he is unable to picture out what. They point to the head in the hand and terror grips him once he sees that – it’s a HUMAN HEAD. Giving up all hope of justifying himself he hands himself to the police. What a cruel world - is there an end to his misery?

Part IV

Now comes the turn around. The Police say it is the head of a dreaded rowdy who carries a Rs. 10,000 award on his head and our man has done well to kill him. Quick to spot the sudden change in fortune, our man says “naa… naane thaan vettunen.. summa thorathi thorathi vettunen". The police instantly hand over the reward.

Part V
Good bye to the low life, our man today is looked up with lot of fear. Come the midnite - he prefers to have some fun. He starts singing his same favorite song:

Suddenly he feels his singing deserves a lot of audience and appreciation. Goes into every single house and pulls up the old, young and all who were asleep and makes them assemble in the ground. They squat in rounds and Annan sits at the centre. He starts singing, stops and asks the crowd to sing. The sleepy crowd responds in awe. At one stage he decided he will do only as a hero and started with paNam pathum seiyum, which was a hit.
Some history :) After Vaidhegi Kaathirundhaal, GM was almost a rage and a must in Tamil films. I think he was the one who started charging 1 lakh per schedule. In Udhaya Geetham, he is a pOli saamiyaar collecting uNdiyal kaasu from tree to tree in different vehicles showing his transformation into a rich - cycle --> moped --> and finally in a car (Maruti 800) which was said to be his. Being in high demand, he took the decision to do only a hero. Thankfully he flopped. The hero was gone and a scientist was born. (kavidha - like olaippu dhaan mukkiyam - HR :thumbsup:)
