MVES is again a fantastic movie.... some of the top of mind recalls

- he inflates few balloons for kids expecting them to buy, when he comes to know that they don't intend to buy and it is only for tamasu, he says... "dei kaalailerndhu pallu vellakame balloon oodhinaa ungalakku tamasu"... brilliant modulation.
- after wedding... he takes his newly wed wife to places where he sold balloon... "vaa ponjaathi naan balloon vitha edatha ellam kamikaren"
- his refusal (body language) to sign an agreement when he is told that he cannot sign as 'balloon' kandasamy
- he goes to his machaan's place sporting a cheap coolers ordering them to evacuate - dialogue in the lines... "karadi thalais" ellam kaali pannittu poidanum
- just before the above scene, GM will show reluctance to enter the house, however SR will cajole him to enter the house. Now GM shows his brilliance... with reluctance he will take two steps forward and immediately returns to SR and conveys him that they have agreed to evacuate. Sheer brilliance.

I had a liking towards GM's comedies from early 90s, but it grew to a much bigger extent during mid 90s. This was when I had few personal issues, out of job etc and I was mostly confined to the TV. And what a company GM makes. He thrashes all sorts of establishments and your distress flies out of the window.

Later I was lucky to have at least one GM fan, in organizations I worked for, so that we had some sort of discussions going on. Cut to year 2007, I found this hub and browsed thru whenever I found time. Those days hubbers meet was in public forum. One of the hubbers attending the Chennai meet wrote about his experience. While on the way to the meet, his two-wheeler did not start even after few kicks. He wrote “if it was my spiritual guru, he would have said ‘idhu aavuradhilla’..”. The “spiritual guru” was hyperlinked. Eager to know who the guru was, I followed the link and to my greatest surprise it landed on GM’s wiki page. Immediately I felt ivaru namma aaLubaa. That hubber was PR.

I found the GM thread much later. I was wondering how I have missed this so far and started reading thru regularly. That was the first thread; it almost did not move at all. Then this hubber came in and ensured that there were regular discussions and posts. The thread kept growing and we moved from 1 to 2 and further. That hubber was HR. The GM thread gave me enormous enjoyment and I thought it was my duty to share what I got. Hence I joined and started contributing here (illEnnaa naanellam periya sOmbERi). Idha oru social service-a nenachu thaan panROm apdinu sendimend mulaamellam poosa virumbalennaalum, there is some truth in it.

When I come across those who do not appreciate GM, I have nothing but sympathy for them. In some thread when some body was degrading GM’s performances, I said “ongaLa ellaam paarththaa enakku paavamaa irukku” and people took it personal. The fact is I do not say this in a criticizing tone, but in a very genuine manner. Naan petra inbaththai ivanga pera mudiyalayE apdinRa aadhangam thaan.

The female gender of human species is exempted from being a GM fan, as they can find solace in n number of serials, pakkatthu / edhirththa veettu stories etc. If you are a male and do not appreciate GM it is self injustice.

My favorite consulting scene is the token number previous to this patient where patient mentions about a problem and then Gounder takes the lead from there to quote 3 other symptoms (Kannu tappu tappunu adichikudha, mutti valikudha... etc). He builds up the expectation in such a way that patient is quite confident that doc will provide cure for all his ailments, now kounder does a complete u - turn (like Soru illa poda) and then says... 'idhellam enakku irukku... onnum panna mudiyaadhu'. :-) :-)

As I typed this, it reminded me of explanation of laughter (from a evolutionary context) provided by Dr.V.S. Ramachandran in a book by name Tell tale brain.


Any joke or humorous incident has the following form. If people don't look beyond GM's slapstick, then I really pity them. I am sure a threadbare discussion would have happened about his style of humor, but I haven't gone thru it yet. In my point of view, slapstick is used right from Tom/Jerry to what not... Charlie Chaplin/Vadivelu used themselves (self inflicted) to evoke laughter and our man used Senthil.

In essence, the brand has universal appeal, so why bother even to discuss about it...

More importantly, Charlie Chaplin uses the way he falls/hurts himself to invoke laughter, however, it has seldom been the case in GM/Senthil. It's always.. konjam thirumbu and then a KICK. Actually, we are more interested in the context of the 'kick' rather than the kick itself.

Exactly. Suruli had his moments, and yeah, RIP and all that, but he was not a great comedian. He can hardly compete with Tenggai who is a class of his own, less so with another brilliant character artist/comedian VKR who needs a thread of his own, if you ask me.

If Suruli had stayed on, GM would have still happenned. That's a force you can't stop, slow, but sure growth we saw would still have happened and Suruli would have joined the ranks of OKN or Oru Viral dude = butt end of Annan's jokes & kicks.

Honest, I remember Suruli the earliest in Kaase dhAn with that famous "ombOdhu(1-8kULLa oru number-AmAm!)". I dont think he was a leading comedian ever except possibly for a brief period of 2-3 hits in a year. By the time he died, YGM was sharing the big heroes' movies with him, and infact taking the lions' share. Before that, thengai was an equal partner in grabbing the big movies.
He doesnt have too many memorable moments either.

Well, someone who couldnt decisively beat YGM can hardly be a competition for Gounder?

Rgearding Suruli, I think we should not deny his position during late 70s. I also have a thought that it was SuruLi who made insult as a comedy. I am not able to substantiate this because I do not remember most of his comedies today which look very unfunny as aon date and did not stand the test of time. There are similarities, but you can clearly see which performance is impressive. I am unable to eloborate further, but SuruLi's comedies are not the favoured one's today and hard to find on any TV

Plot: Heroe's uyirukku uyiraana lover kills herself in a misunderstanding. Hence he becomes a nomad singing in the night. Heroyini's husband dies on the day of their marriage. These were flashbacks. The dose of sOgam does not end there. Heroine,s father sings "thagadhimitha thagadhimitha thagadhimitha thagadhOm" in high pitch, vomits blood and dies. Will the hero and horoine join in life? Nay, with their life almost meaningless, they try to bring young lovers together, facing much opposition. The tragedy follows as the hero gets stabbed by gadappaarai. Not sure he is living or dead, helping the young lovers get married, finally revealed that he is dead.

With the plot running closer to the likes of thulaabaaram, the director cleverly blends the movie with comedy. For instance, immediately after the two flashbacks, as the audience has soaked their towels with tears, the scene cuts to a kuLaththangarai, where GoundamaNi with a thalappaa, is pal veLakking with a vEppanguchchi and Senthil runs in with some sOgam. But this sogam is different and what follows is some rip roaring stuff.

The movie was a big hit because of Raasaththi onna (whattay song!), VK (aanastu kObichuppaar) / RR's performance, screen play and direction. The talk was also on a new comedy pair called GoundamaNi and Senthil, hitherto not known to many. Their chemistry worked as if they have worked together for some 100 movies earlier.

Rekost kalaga kaNmanees to write about their favourite comedy scene / quote. No problems of repeating.

Despite, the petromax scene, mEndil breaking scene (ennaNNE odachiputteenga), Senthil sOgam scene and what follows (avanga varalla?), customer kalleRiyum scene, the scene that stands out for me is this:

The guy who turns out to be the young lover, comes into the village as an innocent guy with almost nothing. After sometime he develops and wears a pant / shirt, incidentally spotted by aNNan.

Per Thamizh wiki, nAn pAdum pAdal was a April-14 (Chithirai 1 / ThamizhppuththANdu :wink:) movie while vaidhEki was a Oct-23 (possibly deepAvaLi) movie.

A huge gap of 6 months (by "andhakkAla" standards).

Now, the only question is in how many (if any) scenes that GM-Senthil appear together in NPP...I think many scenes are in youtube ; GM enthusiasts should be able to dig it up.

Senthil has carved a niche for himself as a comedian in Tamil cinema. SUDHA UMASHANKER profiles the actor.

SENTHIL, WHO represents good fun and a natural style of acting after twenty years in the film industry and many laughs, has captured a definite place in the hearts of moviegoers. Senthil entered the film industry after some solid training in the world of theatre. ``I did a lot of drama and used to act in the troupes in `Aiyya Theriyathayya' Rama Rao, K. Kannan, Isari Velan, A. Veerappan, Director Sundarrajan, etc., playing any kind of role small or big, and frequently filling in for co-actors who had taken ill or couldn't make it.''

He made plenty of friends in the cinema industry thanks to a lodge at T.Nagar (now converted into a commercial complex) where he used to stay, which was frequented by the likes of Parthiban, Bharathiraja and Ilaiyaraja, `Sangili' Murugan and others, and through them made a foray into the film circuit.

Senthil was not one of those who was rewarded with instant recognition in cinema. Success took its time. He made his debut in a Malayalam film ``Itti Karai Pakki'' with Prem Nazir (introduced by production manager Thoothukodi Ramachandran) and did several Tamil films like ``Pasi'', ``Poi Satchi'', ``Inru Poi Naalai Vaa'' and ``Vaidehi Kaathirinthaal'' before he got noticed. Other Tamil films ``Thooral Ninnu Pochu'' and ``Malaiyur Mambatiyan'' got him some attention, but it was the Goundamani- Senthil combination that made his popularity soar. ``A. Veerappan paved the way for our entry as a pair and penned dialogues for us.''

Senthil's naivete and foolishness often got Goundamani into some kind of spot. The ``vazhaipazha'' joke in the film ``Karagattakaran'' (with Senthil setting off to buy two bananas and polishing off one en route and trying every trick in the book to convince Goundamani that the one in hand was the other one he was asking for) became so popular across the State and is evergreen in the memory of Tamil film audiences. Or take the scene in C. Sundar's ``Azhagusami'' in which Senthil accompanies Goundamani to check out a prospective match for the latter and successfully spoils his chances. Other enjoyable interludes provided by the duo include the sequence in ``Vaidehi Kaathirunthal'' in which Goundamani advises a morose Senthil to buy some flowers and halwa and give it to the wife to patch up. More damage is created with Senthil not comprehending the instructions properly and offering them to Goundamani's wife.

There is good clean fun in ``Udayageetham'' too thanks to jailmates Senthil and Goundamani (Senthil being jailed for picking 50 paise from someone's pocket and Goundamani chiding him for setting his sights so low). This enthuses Senthil to take Goundamani's address just before being released and gain entry into his house to steal under the pretext of being a friend. As luck would have it the just released Goundamani spots Senthil on the platform and catches him redhanded happily selling all the former's belongings.

In true, Senthil- Goundamani style, Goundamani beats him up to his heart's content. It is to the credit of the pair that both came up with utterly natural, convincing and credible performances.

Says Senthil ``Goundamani and I are good friends. I know him from his drama days. He is very friendly but once he puts on make up he becomes totally involved in his work.''

And about working with Goundamani he observes ``We always made sure the audience will like what we do and perfected our scenes before the final take. We could easily tell if something would not go down well and raise laughs. And we would let the director know. During the course of the rehearsals we often came up with improvisations and finally it usually evolved into something good.''

Ask him to pick out one favourite comedy sequence from the many he has done and he is reluctant. ``I've done hundreds of films. I can't single out any one. It's like choosing a favourite child.''

As for the net tally of films (he has done films in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and even a couple in Hindi. ``Phool Panayankara'', ``Insaniyat Ke Devatha'') he says, ``I have always been weak in Mathematics.''

Senthil respects the fact that the director is the key person in a film and says that nothing is done without the permission of the director and that the brief is never exceeded. However he says, when directors ask the duo to improvise they oblige.

How does he feel about being cast as a bumbling idiot most of time? ``This is only acting. Its all for the audience. Cinema is like a painting that emerges out of someone's imagination to entertain the audience and keeps them happy. Otherwise will you have a lead pair singing the opening lines of a song at home and dancing away to Ooty by the time it's the end of the pallavi? It is all fantasy.''

He sees comedy as a vital ingredient of a film. ``Comedy is like a sweet. On auspicious occasions and during celebrations sweets are always offered. We offer a unique flavour.''

``Dry jokes won't do. Even full length comedies will do well but there should be a sequence in the whole story.'' He is however of the view that comedy actors before him, like Thangavelu, NSK, Baliah, M. R. Radha and Nagesh were more learned and able to convey great thoughts. But given the length of films nowadays, hardly 13-14 reels, one can't do much. Films in those days ran into 22 reels.'' The Tamil language he feels lends itself well to comedy and adds that he speaks a mixture of all dialects - Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchi, Salem and Coimbatore, to appeal to a wide cross section of people.''

He is currently working in ``Vivegam'' directed by actor Arjun and ``Love Pannunga'' with Livingston besides a couple of other films of director Manoj Kumar.

His goals in life are pretty much the same as that of many others. ``I want to educate my two sons well.'' And Senthil being Senthil adds ``I want to do cinema till the end and make people laugh.''

First of all I can't imagine this being part of original script, something annan must have have improvised. If is after the petromax scene, then annan must have taken cue from it (remember.. vela... avaru kaala medhichiduvaaru scene), else, annan must have foreseen the what future holds for them as a pair and should have used the dialogue in advance... Either way, sheer genius.

Looks like their working method indicate that the director has very little input.

They used to credit Veerappan on the movie titles themselves those days for the "comedy track" - often it was unconnected from the main story - just fitting into the mileau.

e.g. udhayageetham. The GM-Senthil stuff had nothing to do with the drama going on between Revathy-Mohan-Lakshmi and others, with all those sweet songs coming one after the other.

Padaththa paththi ellarukkum theriyindRathaala directora paththi konjam pEsalaam.

GA has always been versatile. When he was a youth he used to write many letters to Vaali. One day he met Vaali and said he wanted to recite a poem written by him. BTW his original name is Amarsingh, with which he wrote his letters. Vaali said, amar... sing (sit, sing). It was in 16V BR said Amar should write a song and he wrote sendhoorappoovE and the world came to know about Gangai Amaran later Ganghei Amaren. Later he went on to compose music for few films including SIS, VM etc. Songs like Kaadhal vaibOgamE, neela vaana Odayil speak of his musical capabilities

GA started his directing venture with kOzhi koovudhu which had moderate success. The next one kokkarakkO was a disaster. These movies happened in the earlier part of the 80's. After a gap he returned during late 80's.

It was Karagaattakkaaran, with which he hit the jackpot. The movie had everything in equal measure and GA cleverly assembled things in place. I think the movie ran for an year in Madhurai

One of the things which fell in place and just elevated the movie was the comedy. Well the previous statement is clearly an understatement.

My fav scene is every one's favorite, adhaannE idhu. I think Senthil should be credited more than aNNan for the monstrous success of this.

Plot: The book supposed to be containing the info on when human beings die, accidentally drops to earth. Siva orders Yemadharman to fetch the book within a month. Yeman (naa yemandaa) and Chithra Guptha (Chi Ku) visit earth in an effort to get the book. Karthik who gets hold of the book, finds that the day of his mother's death is fast approaching. He wants to hide the book in an effort to save his mom.

This was a successful Telugu movie I think. It was a brilliant idea to cast GM and Senthil as Yeman and ChitraGupta

My fav scenes / quotes as below:

While getting closer to the earth, GM starts calling ChitraGuptan as seenaa koonaa
