[tscii:0c1cc2d09d]Profile
A two-time winner of the Academy Award (Oscar), A. R. Rahman is popularly known as the man who has redefined contemporary Indian music. Hailed by Time magazine as the ‘Mozart of Madras’, Rahman, according to a BBC estimate, has sold more than 150 million copies of his work comprising of music from more than 100 film soundtracks and albums across over half a dozen languages, including landmark scores such as 'Roja', 'Bombay', Dil Se', 'Taal', 'Lagaan', 'Vandemataram' and more recently, 'Jodhaa Akbar', 'Delhi 6' and 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
Rahman pursued music as a career at a very young age and after assisting leading musicians in India went on to compose jingles and scores for popular Indian television features. He also obtained a degree in western classical music from the Trinity College of Music, London and set up his own in-house studio called Panchathan Record-Inn at Chennai.
In 1991, noted film maker Mani Ratnam offered Rahman a movie called ‘Roja’ which was a run-away success and brought nationwide fame and acclaim to the composer. The movie also won Rahman the Indian National Award for the best music composer, the first time ever by a debutant. Since then, Rahman has gone on to win the National Award 3 more times, the most ever by any music composer.
In 1997, to commemorate 50 years of Indian Independence, Sony Music signed up Rahman as its first artiste in South Asia. The result was ‘Vande Mataram’, an album that instantly made Indians relate to it and succeeded in rekindling the spirit of patriotism.
In 2001, Andrew Lloyd Webber, the well known composer of musicals like ‘Phantom of the Opera’ & ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ invited Rahman to compose for his musical, ‘Bombay Dreams’, the first time he would produce a musical he did not compose for. ‘Bombay Dreams’ opened to packed houses at London’s West End and had an unprecedented run for 2 years and later premiered at New York’s Broadway. Rahman recently composed the score for the stage production of 'The Lord of the Rings', one of the most expensive productions mounted on stage.
Rahman has undertaken several sellout concert tours in over 30 international destinations including one at the prestigious Hollywood Bowl in 2006.
Recently, Time magazine rated the soundtrack of ‘Roja’ in the Top 10 of their all time best movie soundtracks of the world; The Guardian, UK, listed the soundtrack of ‘Bombay’ in ‘1000 albums to listen before you die’.
Rahman’s music led him to be noticed internationally with several of his tracks featuring in movies such as 'The Lord of War', 'Inside Man' and 'The Accidental Husband'. His composition, Bombay Theme holds the distinction of being featured in over 50 international compilations. He also scored the music for the Hollywood productions, 'Elizabeth - The Golden Age', 'Slumdog Millionaire' and the Chinese movie, ‘Warriors of Heaven & Earth' produced by Sony Pictures.
In 2008, Rahman's work gained global prominence and accolades with the extraordinary success of his score for 'Slumdog Millionaire' that won 8 Academy Awards including two for Rahman, for Best Score and Best Song. Rahman won over 15 awards for his score including the Golden Globe and the BAFTA.
Rahman has been bestowed with the 'Padma Shri', one of India's highest national civilian honours, recognizing his contribution to music, in addition to several other awards including 4 Indian National Film Awards and 24 Filmfare Awards, India's leading recognition for films. He has also been conferred with honorary doctorates from the Aligarh Muslim University and the Middlesex University.
Rahman has expanded his focus to newer horizons like setting up the A R Rahman Foundation to help poor and underprivileged children. He released his first English single, ‘Pray For Me Brother’ in 2007, with proceeds from the sales going to the foundation. He also serves as the UN Ambassador for the 2015 Millenium Development Goals. Rahman has also announced initiatives to establish a tradition in western classical music in India and recently embarked on an ambitious venture to set up the KM Music Conservatory and the KM Music Symphony Orchestra based out of Chennai, India.

Lata Mangeshkar defends Rahman over CWG song
Defending the music maestro A R Rahman over the Commonwealth Games theme song fiasco, melody queen Lata Mangeshkar has said that people should not expect every song of this genius composer to be a rocking hit.
"I have not heard the song. What I am hearing is continuous criticism, which I related stories
At 81, India's nightingale Lata sings on
don't like at all. Rahman is an extremely dedicated composer and people are getting too harsh because of just one failure," Lata Mangeshkar told PTI .
"It's just like people should not expect century from Sachin (Tendulkar) in every match. It happens in music also. Even the veterans do mistakes sometimes. I cannot say that every song of mine is perfect. Many a times I am not satisfied with what I have sung," said the Bharat Ratna awardee.
The CWG theme song Oh Yaaro, Ye India bula liya has got a lukewarm response. People have been saying that it lacks lustre and was either a result of a hurried job or the composer's powers were no longer as potent as before.
Although Rahman charged a whopping Rs. 5 crore as fee for the theme song, but it desperately lacks the verve or pace of Shakira's Waka, Waka, which became a global hit during this year's football World Cup. It also falls well short of the composer's own rousing hits of the past.
Lata Mangeshkar, who turned 82 today, however, applauded the dedication and devotion of the Oscar winning music director.
"Whatever Rahman has created, must be a result of a lot of hard work. Sometimes audience do not like what we feel is our best. It happens and one cannot avoid it. In this case neither Rahman is wrong nor the audience," said the legendary singer.
The Indian nightingale, who has rendered her voice in some of the gems from Rahman like Jiya Jale (Dil se), O Paalan haare (Lagaan) and Luka Chhipi (Rang de Basanti), felt that music is a passion for the Mozart from Madras and he wants to bring something new every time.
"I remember when he was working on his album Vandemataram, one day at midnight he went to the Tamil director Bharat Bala and told him that he was ready with the song and wanted to record it then.
"They did the recording at night and then Bala made the video. It shows how sincere Rahman is towards his work," she added.Bala, incidentally, is also the creative head of the ceremonies committee for the Delhi Games 2010. The video of CWG theme song is conceptualised and produced by Bharat Bala productions

'CWG will be off to a flying start once Rahman starts singing'
NEW YORK: There may be delays and lapses in preparation for the Commonwealth Games, but External Affairs Minister SM Krishna says the troubled event will be "off to a flying start" when AR Rahman starts singing the welcome song on October three.
Speaking at the Asia Society here, Krishna assured the world community that the Games would be a success and hoped that the athletes will be satisfied with the preparations.
"This much I can assure you as an Indian and as a minister of the external affairs of India that on OCtober 3 when (Oscar-winning music composer) AR Rahman starts with his welcome orchestra, I think we will be off to a flying start," Krishna said in response to a volley of questions on the Games.
The Games will be inaugurated on Sunday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
Krishna also admitted there have been some lapses in a sense.
"We did not anticipate that the monsoons will be so prolonged and so heavy and as a result of that the preparations got delayed but the news that is coming out of New Delhi in the last two days that things are improving," he said.
"The athletes have started coming to New Delhi and they will be very pleased with the arrangements," he said.
Krishna, who is in New York for attending the opening session at the General Assembly, has responded to several queries by the Indian and foreign media about the problems associated with the games.
Several comparisons have been made to India's failure to get it act together when China pulled off the Olympics and South Africa managed the Football World Cup earlier this year.
"This has been said about every international athletic event before it starts...questions are always asked and doubts are always expressed... the ultimate proof is eating of the pudding," Krishna said.
"I am going to be back here again next year and then you can put to me this question how well we conducted the Commonwealth Games," the External Affairs Minister said.

Review of ROJA music...one of the early writeups
One of the earliest write ups on ROJA
From The Week dated 10 Jan 1993 article by VINCENT D'SOUZA
MAGIC AT HIS FINGERTIPS
His "Little Desires" have catapulted A.R.Rahman into the top league
Someone called Rahman strolls down the road in crowded Kodambakkam to his usual haunt- the roadside tea stall. But now, more than his favourite brew, he silently enjoys the hum on the lips of most of the stall's patrons- porters, autorickshaw drivers and even beggars. Chinna Chinna aasai... the hum slowly grows to a chorus, as the yoi8ng man slips away unnoticed, unrecognised. Meet A.R.Rahman, the 24 year old creator of the lilting song for tamil film ROJA, Mani Ratnam's latest block buster.
The simple song has been lingering on everybody's lips even a 100 days after the film was released. The rickshaw puller, the executive, the housewife and the giggly teenager sing it to themselves, or join the heroine in the darkened theatre as she drenches herself in the waterfall. The simplicity of the melody is so captivating that like the childhood rhymes, it refuses to fade from memory.
A quirk of fate forces the heroine of the film to abandon her juvenile dreams and marry another person. In the thick of subsequent battle in unfamiliar territory to save her husband, she matures far beyond her tender years.
It was also a quirk of fate which saw the maturing of the young man who put the song on her lips. The sudden death of his father pushed Rahman into the thick of the battle to sustain the orphaned family. Rahman is the only son of the late R.K.Sekar, an assistant music director in Malayalam who had a hand in the music of the classic CHEMMEEN. " I used to accompany dad to the studios and i guess music was in the family, I certainly had an ear for it," he says.
Instinctively he turned to the recording studios after dropping out of eleventh class. This time it was not to listen but to work in jam sessions. From studio jam sessions he quickly graduated to composing jingles. IN 1987, he was recruited by Viji Manuel, music director Ilayaraja's main keyboard player. That was his initiation to keyboards and synthesizers and computer music programming. " I was literally pushed into this field and forced tolearn the art of computer music programming," Rahman says, lovingly fingering his beloved Roland keyboard.
Work with M.K.Arjun in Malayalam and with Raj-koti, the telugu team, and a stint in kannada films, found him where he belonged - the world of film music. The Telugu film industry doyens loved the way his fingers danced over the synthesizer and coaxed magic out of it. " People like them and Mani Ratnam are able to appreciate off-beat music. Thats why its been great working with them," says Rahman.
But somehow, except for his music group colleagues and friends in the recording studios, nobody really vibed with Rahman. Or spoke his language. And that is why, even after the songs of ROJA became a hit, he preferred the confines of his unpretentious house, the facade of his new, fully computerised recording studio - PANCHATHAN RECORD INN.
But that didnt prevent the paparazzi from going to town with wild speculations of how Rahman's computeriserd music wizardry would swamp the reigning maestro Illayaraja out of business. From the gossip columns, one got the impression that Rahman was a cocky upstart who held his comtemporaries ion contempt.
Meeting him at his home, one cannot miss the hurt in his eyes. A hurt and an apprehension that his sudden fame would be his undoing. It makes his mother shield him with a protective arm. Rahman does not like being compared to Ilayaraja whom hge holds in high esteem.
Talk of his tune in ROJA and he is all humility. "Nothing really," shrugs the chubby faced youngster in a loose green shirt and rolled up trousers. "I composed the tune and practised ot ans then put on the switchboard. It was my grounding in electronics that helped."
You can get nothing further from him. But he is willing to talk at length about how he has absorbed all kinds of music- rap, jazz, fusion, the wailers and Bob Marley. And a little but of it all has come across in ROJA.
Rahman has played jam with US based double electric violin maestro L.Shankar and his orchestra. He played the Roland for MAdras pdp group NEMESIS AVENUE. "Its fun working with guys like Rahman," says NEMESIS AVENUE's Sudhin Prabhakar.
Rahman's yuppie image is deceptive. He is a deeply religious person. His "PANCHATHAN" is strewn with Islamic icons and symbols. Phil Collins and the cresent moon and star have pride of place. He wears a chain with an inscribed locket. Ask him the reasin for his success anbd he will lift his hands sporting Urdu inscribed rings heavenwards. It is believed K.Balachander who produced ROJA rechristened Dilip as Rahman, just before the film was released.
The kid who bought a Roland for Rs.1000 at Burma Bazaar (madras's smuggled goods market) has come a long way. But he is modest avout his success. Says Rahman: "Already so much has been made of my computerised studio that it has become embarrassing for me." He can no longer hop on stage to play for rock concerts with Nemesis Avenue. If he plays in public now, he will have to think up something new, something different.
He is missing the fun and all that jazz of the pop music scene. But he also knows that there ius nothing like big apple of film music. Especially since he's taken a large sized bite out of it. "Just look at the reach of film music. Lakhs of people casn listen to or sing film songs. As they did with Roja," he says.
The ROJA album has yielded record sales for Lahari Music Company. And Rahman's work has increased. So, composing jingles is out. His last jingles were for thr Allwyn and Prudent ads.
He is presently working on Suresh Menon's (actress Revathi's husband) film PUDHIYA MUGAM and on Mani Ratnam's THIRUDA, THIRUDA. With his obvious western music leanings, it might be a little difficult for Rahman to score typical Tamil Film Music. "IN the long run, we'll have to see if Rahman can get to the core of Tamil isai(music). Like Ilayaraja had done in Thevar Magan," says Viji Manuel, adding,"but that dosent detract from his talent."
Meanwhile, people all over the south continue to hum CHINNA CHINNA AASAI...(little, little desires). "It feels great to see thwat just a siongle song of yours is sung by a rickshawpuller as well as an executive. What more would you want?"Rahman asks. Sounds right.

A tabletop is crowded with bouquets, presumably sent to commemorate the National Award. The barest bouquet, with red roses and carnations, is from one AR Rahman. The card reads ‘Congrats, love ARR’. Receiving this bouquet didn’t just make Amit’s day, “It’s made my career!” he says. “I can chill for a few months now, because it validates my journey so far.” Amit was 13 years old when AR Rahman debuted as a music director with Roja. ARR has inspired him ever since.

Rahman Brings CWG Ceremony to Electrifying Climax
New Delhi, Oct 3 – India’s music sensation A.R. Rahman belted out ‘Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto’ to bring the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony Sunday to an electrifying climax, as the crowds echoed him in equal measure.
Rahman, clad in a white bandhgala jacket, black pants and white shoes, performed the Commonwealth Games 2010 anthem with hundreds of dancers dressed in traditional Indian costumes.
As the spectators joined him, much of the flak the Oscar winning composer has faced for the Rs.500 million Commonwealth Games 2010 anthem seemed to have been washed away.
Fireworks went off and then ‘Jai ho’, Rahman’s Oscar winning song, filled the air. The chant at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, many would swear, was magical.

[tscii:76aa2ff0e9] What the world feels about CWG theme song...
“What’s unique are the dance shows early evening. And the music,” gushes South African boxer Lebogang Kilane. Contrary to the thumbs-down given to A R Rahman’s CWG special song in India, many foreign athletes seem to sway to the slow strains of Oh Yaaro, Yeh India which plays on a loop in the open-air amphitheatre.
“I’ll associate my time in the village with this music, always. It has a very international feel—even some African riffs—and grows on you slowly,” says Bikile, another South African athlete. “It’s soothing but groovy at the same time,” says an English squash player, who prefers to sit and listen to the music all evening.

[tscii:c00c7045a5]A R Rahman rocks at CWG opening ceremony
Jeeyo Utho Badho Jeeto
All those who had any misgivings about A R Rahman’s Commonwealth Games theme song ‘Jeeyo Utho Badho Jeeto’ got their answer on Sunday night when the prodigious composer and singer gave a rocking performance at the opening ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
The gala evening had India showcasing its 5000 years of history, its rich culture and diversity in a ceremony that lasted close to four hours. Singer Hariharan opened the ceremony with his welcome song ‘Swagatam’.
Dressed in white sherwani over black trousers, Rahman closed the ceremony with an electrifying performance of ‘Jeeyo Utho Badho Jeeto’ followed by his Oscar winning song ‘Jai Ho!’ from Slumdog Millionaire.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was packed with around 60,000 spectators all of which enjoyed Rahman’s powerful rendition that was well complemented by fireworks in the sky.

As I had written earlier, I am in love with this song!
It rocks!
But again, I am an ARR fan - so its not surprising.
I am very proud and happy to see the kind of reception the song is receiving now, from all quarters. The song has an international appeal.
How correct the Mr India Director (forget his name) is? ARR song grows on you. If Subhash Ghai could reject a Jai Ho, then what else can you say?
ARR Rocks! I hope Sachin does too and wins the test for us!

interesting artical in arrfyg
ARR fans,
I went to see the ARR concert in Boston with my parents 2 days back. It was an unforgettable experience. My parents, who are in their 60s and staunch music lovers and come from the traditional side of India in terms of taste and exposure, are completely in love with ARR and his music now. For many years, they liked his music, but even they too for some time thought his music was too rhythmic and repetitive. But now...completely changed. They can't stop talking about him and his music, esp. knowing how simple and humble he is without any trace of ego or arrogance. That is what sold them to ARR finally...his personal attributes, and hearing some more evergreen tunes from him in the past few years and just being more exposed to ARR's music in general. Here is what my father said in response to that letter from the editor piece from filmfare recently:
"Short and sweet but loaded review of a simple, humble, unassuming living legend, a musician standing tall among a crowd of music makers. An artist who is original, creative, bold and revolutionary in introducing new patterns of blending eastern and western melody and rhythm, that has resulted in so many hits becoming evergreen unlike most popular songs with a short lifespan."
That's my father's take on ARR. I liked this line the most from what he wrote:
"a musician standing tall among a crowd of music makers"
That just completely struck me.

[tscii:24e7dc21a7]'I want to compose a song with Rahman’ -Flo Rida
American rapper and singer Flo Rida, of chartbuster You spin my head right round fame, briefly toured India last week. And post his performances in Bangalore and Pune, the hip-hop star, who was brought down here by Morph Entertainment, only has good things to say about the country.
“I’m in awe of Indian culture,” he says. “India is the place where music originated so it’s seen in a big way by the entertainment industry in the US. It’s got such a rich culture and varied genres of music. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go around much this time but I definitely want to come back again for long.”
The singer is cued into Bollywood as well and says he’d love to team up on a song like the Snoop Dogg-Pritam number Singh is kinng. “I’ve been exposed to Bollywood music and believe it has its own charm and melody,” he says. “I would love to meet and compose a song or two with someone like (AR) Rahman.”
And as Bollywood gets ready for a remake of the Hollywood blockbuster, The Hangover, that featured Flo Rida’s Right round, Flo Rida says he’d be “honoured” to be a part of it: “I would consider it a huge compliment if my music is a part of the movie or any other Bollywood movie for that matter.”
Talking about the song that made him a global superstar, Flo Rida says he got the idea of sampling Dead or Alive’s single You spin me round for his song Right round through his sister first. “I finally recorded it because I wanted to show listeners my musical growth by broadening my horizons, since ROOTS was my second album,” he reveals.
“I think the song managed to influence people internationally because whenever I compose, I think of people all over the world rather than just a local audience.”

Ganesh is producing Vaanam and he wants to make it one of the biggest movies of the year. He is going all out to make the London launch an event, for which AR Rahman will also be present.

article about ARR in BJP newspaper - malayalam
http://www.janmabhumidaily.com/detailed-story?newsID=104220&page=0&subpage=1
transilation
"ARR is the pride of every Indian. By making India's music as his music, foreigners and "progressive music lovers" have changed him forever. From the failure of CWG song, we can note that ARR has forgotten his childhood and his father RK Sekar.
When Rahman's Jai Ho won Oscar, every Indian felt proud. When he accepted the award in the Oscar stage, he didn't mention a single word about his music guru (his father). He didn't mention one word about Ilaiyraja, India's great musical genius, who had given him the opportunity to play violin when he (ARR) was struggling with poverty. Could Rahman have forgotten to say that Indian culture or music had taken him to Oscars? Never.
It is here that we have to know that Jai Ho has been lifted from Indian music. M.P. Sankunni Nair's Chatram & Chamaram book explains to us that Jai Ho is not Rahman's creation. It is a recreation from Samaveda, the basic block of Indian music. Samaveda is the oldest music 'Sahitya' of India.
In short, Samam means to make happy. With Jai Ho song, Rahman has made both Indians and foreigners happy. Everybody thought whatever Rahman touches will turn to gold.
The music of Ilaiyaraja, which had become stale with ARR's growth, is achieving new lease of life through the veins of South Indians.
The idol of ARR is breaking. The 2010 CWG is not giving pleasant moments to India. .....
The 2010 CWG has shown the true colors of AR Rahman, the praised artist. It is no surprise if patriotic Indians are not shocked upon hearing that he has charged around 6 crores for "Jeeyo Utho" song. We have to remember that Pandit Ravi Shankar, who composed the music for the previous CWG held in India, had not charged even a single penny.
Rahman is forgetting the path he has travelled. Music is 'Sadhana' and 'Aradahana'. It is not fitting of a eminent artist to turn music into an 'item for sale'. He could have earned more fame with the CWG title song than that single Oscar. It would have been a 'Guru Dakshina' to the nation.
It is here that we remember Resul Pookutty, the world artist. No Indian will forget his words during the Oscar awards ceremony.
"This is a Sivarathri gift to my nation" - who else, but Resul Pookutty has got the humility and courage to utter these words. That was the moment where Rahman lost. Now he has shown his true colors through the commonwealth games. The failure of CWG theme song shows that time has punished Rahman for not dedicating his Oscar to his Guru (Ilairaja) or his father (RK Sekar).
Resul Pookutty again wins when we see his response to him winning the National award. Resul has again become a role model by writing a letter to Central Information Ministry to consider Amrit Pritham for the award, as Amrit had worked with him for sound mixing. To share the award that he is getting, Resul is epitome of humility.
Resul Pookutty is providing new direction to young generation. ...<some words of praise for Resul>...

"Ilayaraja's Native music which recieved a set back with ARR's growth,is achieving new lease of life..........." There is no mention that his music became stale. However no worries please....

One reply from a fellow Rahmaniac to the article..
Yes, for sure, there is no religious dimension but lets not even bring religion into this context please.
My only question, why in the world does AR have to credit Illayaraja and that too on the Oscar stage? AR clearly appreciated all the efforts put by his Musicians and beautifully spoke in both languages "Hindi & Tamil". What more could one ask for??. Of course AR had the genes of his father but when times were so bad (when he was not even mature to understand the world), it was his mother who stood like a giant pillar to lead the family. Seriously, AR's mother deserve a special Award from the Indian Govt, to have dedicated her entire life in giving all of us the most precious golden award called AR.Rahman.
Thiruvalluvar (a celebrated Tamil poet) who wrote the Thirukkural says:
"Eendra pozhudhinum peridhuvakkum than maganaisandron ena ketta thaai"
Means : Great is the joy of the mother when a child is born to her; but greater is her joy when she hears his unblemished character and merits from others.
I think its a shame & we don't even deserve to be a critic of AR & his efforts. Of course, people take liberty to claim that we are the one's who brought AR to limelight and all that crap. Come on, that is the only hook we have got to be a critic but we are not even IOTA close to a man who has seen everything in his life but is humble as ever; working hard as ever; making our country proud as ever. DOT (Endhiran, the Robot Syle :-)).
Music Director Deva rightly quoted in AR's felicitation event. If the Oscars Jury/Team come to know of AR's humility & attitude, they will give him another Oscar describing his character.
So, to all Bashers,Haters & Crook heads, just give yourself some life in doing something better and see how much could you be responsible in making your contry proud. If you can't do that, atleast let somebody who has been diligently proving and taking the nation to heavenly heights.
Jai Ho AR.Rahman !!!

[tscii:efdf53009f]Hrithik puts Paani on hold
We all know that Hrithik Roshan is a perfectionist. And more so after the debacle of Kites, which has made him extra meticulous about his scripts. So it was understandable why he decided to put Shekhar kapur’s much-hyped Paani in the backburner as of now. Apparently, the actor wasn’t too happy with the draft and spotted some glitches. He has requested Shekhar to make some changes. The director understood the actor’s predicament and has decided to do the needful.

ARR to act in a Malayalam film?
Is the music maestro AR Rahman going to act in a Malayalam film titled Track with Rahman, directed by Jayaraj?
Rahman might do a cameo which has Malayalam megastar Mammootty and Jayasurya doing lead roles.
In the film Mammootty would play the role of a police officer who is investigating the murder of a young man who had come to Mumbai to sing the track in a film, along with a famous playback singer.
As per sources close to the director, Mammootty as the investigating police officer in the film would meet ARR in a scene. However ARR is yet to confirm the news.

A R Rahman to join 150th anniversary of S African Indians
Johannesburg, Oct 12 (PTI) Oscar-winner A R Rahman will lend some star power to the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first Indians in South Africa with a three-city tour of his ''Jai Ho'' concert.
Rahman will also become the first overseas artist to play at the prestigious Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, built especially for the recent FIFA 2010 World Cup. He will also play in Cape Town and at Sun City in November.
"We are proud to be associated with the A R Rahman Jai Ho Concert," said Fathima Hassim, from DStv Indian, which beams a range of Indian channels into South African homes.
"South African fans can expect a fusion of Eastern and Western musical influences that will take Bollywood music into the future with this incredible production", said Sam Hendrikse, CEO of Hunta Live, who is co-hosting the show with DStv Indian.
Rahman embarked on his world tour in June this year and has already taken his theatrical experience to 16 major cities worldwide.
Best known as the man who has redefined contemporary Indian music, Rahman shot to international fame for his work on the score for the Academy Award-winning film ''Slumdog Millionaire''.
He is also the only Indian to win to Academy awards, a Golden Globe, two Grammys and a BAFTA.

Harpejji: Rahman's latest craze
Oscar winning musician A.R. Rahman has brought a brand new Harpejji k24 from USA recently. Tim Meeks of Marcodi Musical products hand-delivered the new Harpejji during his world tour recently. Reportedly Rahman is quite excited about his new instrument.
The Harpejji, a combination of the best characteristics of a guitar and a keyboard, is a 24 string instrument that has a matrix represention of all the keys on a piano and the natural string harmonics.
Interestingly, most people in India are unaware of this instrument. So will Rahman make it popular? Let's wait and watch!

The Asian Awards 2010, in partnership with Lebara, is the first of its kind event celebrating achievement and excellence among South Asians from around the world. To be held on October 26th at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane London, The Asian Awards 2010 has already confirmed a calibre of guest unlike any other Asian event before it: Yash Chopra, Sachin Tendulkar, AR Rahman along with Vijay Mallya - Owner of United Breweries, Kingfisher Airlines and Force India F1 team, Gurinder Chadha – Director of Bend It Like Beckham, Sir Richard Stagg – High Commissioner to the UK and Lord Sebastian Coe – Olympic gold medalist and Chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games.
Also lending his support in the judging panel is Lord Alan Sugar. Caroline Jackson Levy, managing director of UBM Awards, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the incredible response to the Asian Awards- it is quite simply an honour to have the support of some of the world’s greatest achievers.” The nominees and winners are individuals who parallel the achievements of great and iconic figures of the past; world-changers whose creativity touches enrich and inspire us in our daily lives.
Legendary playback singer and songwriter Sonu Niigaam has also confirmed that he will couple his personal appearance at the awards with a rare live performance. Amitabh Bachchan will also receive a lifetime achievement award.
Also as we reported earlier, there is also the coveted Lebara People's Choice Award. Nominated in that category are AR Rahman, Amitabh Bachchan, Jay Sean, Lata Mangeshkar, Sachin Tendulkar and Shah Rukh Khan.

I mean what sort of reasoning is that???
Your idea of supporting another person simply for the reason that ARR is receiving brickbats is just laughable. I mean, shouldn't we as fans support ARR when times are bad?
There's no point in telling that you're his fan when you only support him if/when he provides the sort of music you like.

Naan Sachinukku oru testu nnu thaan sonnene thavira, avar a pathi kurai sollale.
I have never said that Sachin is NOT a match winner.
Check my postings.
Also, ARR pathi oru post pannen - regarding the CWG song - adhai poi parunga.
I still think that he should NOT have taken this high an amount for an opportunity that is a National/International Honor! I dont care about corruption and what others did at CWG - this is an honor to serve the country, show your patriotism and I personally think he should NOT have charged this amt. I understand the pricing dynamics - I am only taking about this particular instance.
Again, my personal, humble opinion and I am not saying I am right.
Adhunaala thaan naan ARRukku indha dharava vote podala.
I have also posted that I love the CWG song! It is amazing!
I dont have to prove my loyalty over and over. I am not here to denigrate ARR or any other person. Proof rests in my postings to date.
I am a fan of ARR music. I am also a fan of Sachin's batting.
However, I will be one of the first to go and buy an ARR CD - I also understand the ARR Branding: it stands for quality! Trust me, I listen to a song many-many times before making any judgement!
I am not a complete fan of ARR the person or for that matter Sachin the person, if that is what you are looking for.
I will not nod my head at anything and everything they do.
That is what has made me instantly love ARR's music after having grown up in Raja's melodies.
That's made me love Sachin's batting after the retirement of my idol, Sunny G!
This is making me love 'good' music scored by other MDs.

Sunny,
There is no need for anyone to prove his loyalties. I don't really care if you are a true ARR fan or false ARR fan. If anybody is trying to speculate such things here, then he is wasting time.
I have issues with the point you made. You say you love the CWG song, but just because it is not a hit in the media, you say ARR doesn't deserve any praise and such. You are not being honest with yourself. First of all, why do u say he should not have charged 5 crores? How much should he have charged? If you had been following his career, you would have figured out by now why he is after money these days.
sunnyg
15th October 2010, 07:39 PM
I have never said CWG music is a flop. I have been honest in telling everyone that this music is awesome - I have loved it!
That is not the reason I did not vote for ARR.
I did not vote for him because he had an opportunity to make a statement and he did not. He could have thrown the money back to these %$%# and taken the high ground. That would have made him look like a saint. Again, my humble opinion.
Can I ask u a question - does anyone know if he took any money for the tamil maanadu? If he did NOT, then that's double-standards to me.
I understand that he is the most sought after MD and people are waiting in line to get him to score music. He can charge whatever he wants for movies and commercial endeavors. Most recently, Toyota have signed him. I am very happy for him!
My only point is that he could have handled CWG differently. I am sure he has learnt from this experience. None of us is perfect - to expect ARR to be one shows our naivity.
Objectively speaking, in my humble eyes, Sachin has achieved more this year in his respective field than ARR has this year.

If he had thrown back the money, then it would have made him look arrogant, not a saint. It would have also made people think that he gives up easily, no faith in his own talent, why can't he rework on the song.
We are not sure if he really did not take any money for Maanadu song. Even if he had not taken any money, so what? Let him decide for what he wants to charge money, how much to charge etc. You can't impose your principles on him.

I would not return $$ for movies. I am talking about one specific case.

ARR accepts CWG anthem was a disappointment
Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman apologised for the disappointment caused by his Commonwealth Games anthem. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, the maestro admitted that the track was not up to the mark. The reason for this travesty was the fact that it was only tested on the younger generation and not all the age groups. "The anthem was tested on the younger generation, and not all ages. We tested it on a lot of nationalities, but for some reason, people did not like it and it became a huge controversy," said Rahman.
He further added, "It served the purpose, I was patient. And next time I should be careful about testing it out on all the generations. It is difficult to satisfy every one, but I did try my best and I am sorry to have let anybody down; but I'm definitely proud of the composition." Overall, the CWG anthem, India bula liya got a lukewarm response from the audience and was openly criticised by CWG Organising Committee's executive board member V K Malhotra and other leaders for "falling short of expectations".
Before the games, Rahman had received a lot of criticism upon the preview of the track and had to 'tweak' the song a bit. According to reports, the song was made 'peppier' to meet up to the precedence set before by Rahman's Chak de . At the time, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar had defended the music maestro by saying that not every song of this genius composer could be a rocking hit.During the interview, Rahman also added that the music of the Rajinikanth-Aishwarya Rai starrer Endhiran was also a let down due to the dubbing. His version was only supposed to be in Tamil and had to dub the song for the other versions of the film. He said that with dubbing, there arises a problem of limitation of lyrics and sensitivity of language - and that in this particular case, "it showed."

[tscii:e3ca663f8b]I'm sorry if I've let anybody down, says Rahman
New Delhi: Double Oscar winner A.R. Rahman, who composed the Commonwealth Games theme song ‘Yaaro India Bula Liya', on Friday said he was “sorry” his number had attracted criticism in some quarters.
“I am sorry if I have let anybody down on this but definitely I am proud of the composition and the anthem,” the famed composer said.
Rahman said it was difficult to satisfy everyone but “I will try my best” in future.
He said he had realised that next time he should be more careful about testing it out on every generation — older, younger.
He, however, said there was a positive reaction when the theme song was tested on people from different nationalities.
“Of course, some people did not like it and it became a huge controversy,” he said.
Rahman said in his view the number was “great” during the opening day ceremony.
“It had lovely feedback from Australia, England and all those places, who had not heard about the controversy and they loved the song,” he added. — PTI

[tscii:47b90944fb]Amy Jackson replaces Trisha in Gowtham Menon’s film
Gowtham Menon is often known for parting ways with his technicians and actors. Nearly before a year, the filmmaker avoided working Harris Jayaraj due to some creative difference of opinions and signed A.R. Rahman for all his projects that include Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya and its Hindi remake and Thuppariyum Anand.
Having waited nearly for a period of 5 years, Gowtham finally confessed that he would never work with Ajith Kumar in mere future. It all happened when Ajith Kumar kept insisting over changes in his script of ‘Thuppariyum Anand’. Now we hear that it will be Suriya replacing Ajith in lead role.
It has been a blatant fact that Gowtham signs his actresses for at least couple of films, which is literally illustrious with Jyothika (Vettaiyaadu Vilayaadu, Kaakha Kaakha and Pacchaikili Muthucharam), Sameera Reddy (Vaaranam Aayiram and upcoming release Nadunisi Naigal), Samantha (Ye Maaya Chesavo and upcoming bilingual movie with Rana Daggubati) and Trisha (Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikalam and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya). Following these best actresses, Gowtham Menon has now inked deal with Amy Jackson.
The British model made her debut in Tamil film industry with the film ‘Madharasapattinam’ and was signed for his next film Thuppariyum Anand. But now, Amy feels lucky for having been roped for the Hindi remake of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya. The film produced by Gowtham Menon in collaboration with 20th Fox Century features Prateik Babbar in lead role and Trisha was supposed to repeat her ‘Jessie’ role in this version as well.
The film was supposed to go on floors by first week of October and is now postponed to November. Since Trisha has already signed couple of South Indian projects – Ajith Kumar’s Mankatha and Pawan Kalyan’s Kushiga (remake of Hindi blockbuster Love Aaj Kal), she has walked out of the project due to call sheet issues. Apparently, Gowtham Menon has now chosen the most beautiful British actress Amy Jackson to play the female lead role opposite Prateik Babbar.

CWG, a hit - Triumph & Gratitude

CWG, a hit - Triumph & Gratitude
I want to sincerely thank all those who gave me extremely positive & encouraging responses when 'Jiyo Utho Badho Jeetho' released. Your honest, positive & unbiased reactions and getting the right perspective gave me the confidence to withstand the unexpected storm that followed. All's well, that ends well. It all culminated in an awesome response to the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony and the CWG anthem performance was a HUGE HIT and I could see both the young and old people grooving to it.
I'd like to thank the creative director for the CWG ceremony, Bharatbala, for making such a lovely video enhancing the true spirit of the lyrics and the games, Mehboob Alam for the chant 'Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto', the choreographer for the video, Feroz Khan, 'Dhol Foundation', designer Varun Bahl and stylist Vijayta Kumar. Of course, the opening night act wouldn't have been a hit without the duas of my spiritual guides and my loving family including my mom, wife, children and sisters.
A big thanks to my hard working team, my dear fans and fellow artistes ranging from Srinivas, Chinmayi and Shibani Kashyap to the ones I want to mention below for defending me unconditionally. God bless you all!
Lataji - "Rahman is an extremely dedicated composer and people are getting too harsh"
Vishal - "Rahman has done more for music and India's international image than almost anyone else"
Pritam - "In the long run, among other things, the CWG 2010, will be remembered for the theme song"
Kailash Kher - "For me, Rahman is above criticism"
Anu Malik - "He has his own style, his own sound and he has tried to do something different. That's the way he has always been composing."
Prasoon Joshi - "The new version of the anthem is sounding very peppy, crisp and tight"
Resul Pookutty - "The song is a wake up call to the athletes/people of India"
Jitesh Pillaai - "Every man is mortal, but some are less so. A R Rahman has already qualified for cinema immortality. Let the man be. And let's listen to what he has to offer. His music surely speaks far better than most of our words".
In a personal interaction, Javed Akhtarsaab said, "Don't worry Rahman Saab, everytime you come up with something new, people tell me that you are finished. 20 days later, they start humming it".
In closing, congratulations to Team India on their superb performance at the games and for living the motto 'Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto'.
Love, A. R. Rahman

[tscii:6bce9353b7]RAHMAN IS GREAT BOSS -SATISH CHAKRAVARTY
Rahman experience
It was a great experience to have worked with Rahman. He is not only a great musician but also a wonderful human being. Rahman is a great boss. He took me under his wings and mentored me to become a better musician and taught me how to use technology in an artistic way. You don’t get this kind of learning anywhere else. Rahman is also like a friend, philosopher and guide to all those who work with him because he likes to take care of people who work for him. It is his encouragement which has made me an independent music director.
Rahman is a great boss
Success does not affect Rahman
at all
Rahman as a person
I like his humility. He remains grounded always. Success does not affect Rahman at all. He treats all human beings equally irrespective of their backgrounds. I really look upon this quality of Rahman as a person.
Favorite albums in the recent times
I liked Raavan very much which was musically very interesting and challenging. I could perceive Rahman’s Hollywood experiences in it. The manner in which Hollywood approaches a score; Rahman has also approached the structure of the song very openly. I also liked Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya which had a musical theatre feel. The songs did not fall into the pattern of pallavi, saranam and Rahman had handled the melody without these structures which was interesting. Gautham had really used them well on screen. It is a very difficult thing to do but they have pulled it off very well.

[tscii:c594241d58]Rahman: Never said sorry for anthem
Chennai: Days after reports emerged that he had apologized for the Games anthem as it turned out to be a disappointment, A R Rahman said he had no regrets over the number.
“I never said I was sorry... I only said that I was sorry some people did not like it,” Rahman told on Sunday.
“I scored the music for CWG bearing in mind whom I was catering to. It was meant for sports people, youngsters and an international audience,” he said.
While the international audience loved it, the older generation did not like it, he said.
“Criticism against the number came from those who compared it with spiritual music... they did not like it,” he said, adding that the song had Indian and international elements meant to rev up the sports fraternity.

Now we know what the gifts are - songs from JHS. This is disappointing.
Not because of the songs (I love the female version of "I've been waiting"), but the way it was presented as some gift for fans. It is clear that these songs are released now for promotional purposes of JHS which is releasing on 22nd. The makers must have wanted to improve the "cyber-awareness" of the movie and what better way than ARR himself releasing unreleased singles on Facebook and Twitter.
If they wanted to serve these as promos they should have released it that way instead of ARR's right hand man Vijay Iyer teasing fans with "gifts exclusively for us" tag line. I can't believe ARR would stoop so low to promote a movie of his. If he truly wants to do something for his fans, please release the album Connections which he did for Nokia phones.
I thought of sending this to ARR Yahoo groups first but that place is filled with faniacs who won't entertain criticism. There are far more sensible people here for sure. All comments are welcome.

Thanks Maddy. Great to see someone sharing my concerns.
I guess we should wait to see if all of these "gifts" are going to be JHS related, before sending the mail. If that is how it ends, it will be heartbreaking to see ARR treat us fans like subscribers of a marketing mailing list.

Really? The timing couldn't be any more perfect.
I don't believe ARR came up with this idea himself. This is probably the brain child of Tyrewala or UTV Movies people. But I can't believe ARR joined the play.
Nevertheless the single is great. It could have been any other promo single for JHS but hyping it as some sort of exclusive gift for fans, purely for promotion, is bad.

Yes. ARR is not the one who would entertain such kinda things. What they would've meant is releasing the song in ARR's FB or ARRYG instead of making it available in other portals so that ARR fans wud be the first to listen to the songs, which is not the case for other songs. Probably the choice of words didnt work out as expected I guess.

each song of AR is gift for us and he himself is a gift for us - what was "really special" abt releasing 2 songs of a movie in facebook?? he composed songs for Abbas's movie - how can it be a gift for us "exclusively" ? then all the songs and soundtracks will be presented as "gifts" for us, from now on - bloody :x

I wouldn't call it a gift specially for AR's fans. Like Ajay, I think it was Vijay's wrong choice of words that created the whole hype surrounding the new songs. But then again, I would still considered the release of the numbers as a pleasant surprise.
When was the last time AR released the additional songs and theme number prior to the release of the film?
Naan Varuven was composed a day before the audio release and we have yet to see its official release in the cd. Gopal keep saying it will be released but when?
At least, there's hope that these two new numbers would see the light of day sooner.

I want to pass the music on to the next generation: Rahman
Johannesburg: A passion to promote Indian classical music among the youth is what drives Oscar winning musician AR Rahman. Films and shows are the means to reach that end, says the Mozart of Madras.
After touring 16 countries, Rahman`s "Jai Ho: The Journey Home" world tour will join the 150th anniversary celebrations of the arrival of the first Indians in South Africa.
The musician who had the world up and dancing with `Jai Ho`, the song which won him an Academy Award, said that he is putting in his all for the project.
"I have a school which trains students in classical music and my whole reason for doing all these shows is to collect money for building the school," Rahman said during a brief stopover in Johannesburg to promote his forthcoming shows in South Africa.
"India does not really have a proper school of that kind. I started in a small way two years back, and we have 200 kids studying there. We want to expand and that will cost a lot of money. That motivates me to do shows and films and endorsements," said the 44-year old musician.
Confirming that Indian classical music was still his first love, Rahman said, "It is evergreen. I want the next next generation go even further in spreading this."
Though Rahman believes that music unites people, some of his experiences have shown him otherwise too.
"When I did my first American show, organised by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, an organisation promoting Indian unity, a couple of Tamil people said I was singing too many Hindi songs; the Gujaratis said I`m singing too many Tamil songs and so on," said Rahman.
"Now I get all types of people at my shows, North Indians, South Indians, Sri Lankans, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and others. Of course people who want to complain will still do so. In my South Africa shows, I want the audience to go one step further, I want them to bring some of the indigenous communities too," said the musician.
His show is an amalgamation of Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi and English languages as well as genres like rock, hip-hop and orchestral music.
"Even Americans, black and white, have come to my show and said they had never seen anything like it and wanted me to come back for more" said the musician.
Rahman said that he is overjoyed by the reaction to `Jai Ho`, across the globe.
"When I do the show they keep waiting for `Jai Ho` as the last number and demand an encore. Indians and non-Indians, dance with feelings of joy to the song. They love to dance even if they do so clumsily. I even saw one video on You Tube where there are a whole lot of corporate people dancing to it," said Rahman.

[tscii:3e8b446745]Article on potential best song and score contenders for Oscars
Good article discussing potential contenders for best OST and song Oscars. It calls ARR "superstar musician".. wow..
--
127 Hours / A.R. Rahman
The score for 127 Hours by AR Rahman is also quite remarkable. There are two ways score is approached these days – one is going by the reputation of the composer (I call this the Kris Tapley method, wherein he makes his predictions for the tech categories based on how well known or admired the designer is – usually works, eg Sandy Powell, etc.) and the other way is the Harvey Weinstein method of sending out the score as a hit record on its own. Both work quite well.
Superstar musician A.R. Rahman, who won the Best Score Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire, once again teams up with Danny Boyle for this real life drama starring James Franco. The score is largely guitar driven, and Rahman is pitch perfect for the film's most dramatic moments, eloquently reflecting the overall mood of the film.
127 Hours / "If I Rise" – Performed by Dido
Grammy nominated English singer/songwriter Dido, who shot to success after her debut album sold 21 million copies worldwide, displays her unique vocal abilities on "If I Rise". Dido collaborated with 2-time Oscar winner A.R. Rahman on the song, which is featured in the climax of this compelling film.

Sultan becomes Hara!
After the success of his sci-fi entertainer Enthiran, Rajinikanth is trying to salvage his daughter Soundarya's pet project Sultan-The Warrior.
This long- in-the-making animated film will now have a new name- Hara, one of the other names for Lord Shiva.
Hara will also have a new director KS Ravikumar and a brand new producer Gemini Film Circuit (GFC).
Remember GFC distributed Enthiran's Hindi version Robot all over the country. So after tasting success with Enthiran's distribution country wide, GFC feels that they can cash in on Rajini's star image.
GFC will now settle Reliance Big Pictures who were the original producers of the film along with Soundarya's Ocher Studios.
Hara will now get a makeover with Ravikumar introducing a live Rajinikanth character into the film. Ravikumar will now make it a typical superstar film, as it would be 50 percent live action and 50 percent animation.
Ravikumar is now doing the post production work of his Kamal Haasan film Manmathan Ambu and also doing script discussion with Rajinikanth, on how to make Hara commercially viable.
Now with Ravikumar stepping in, it looks like Hara will be the superstar's next big release in summer of 2011.

Sun Pictures are going to premier songs from their Rajinikanth super hit Enthiran on Sun TV on Sunday (Oct 24) evening.
For the first time ever, the channel will start telecasting songs from the Shankar directed film, nearly 25 days after the films theatrical release! It is for the first time in India that the producer has not telecast the full song from his film, even after release.
The AR Rahman songs from the film are still topping the charts. Among the top 10 songs on Radio Mirchi (98.3 FM), 6 are from Enthiran ! Never before has all the songs from a single film been featured among the top 10.
It clearly indicates Rajini-ARR-Shankar power. Once the songs from the film are regularly shown on the Sun Network, the recall value for the film increases and also the possibility of repeat audiences.

[tscii:664f662c5c]Best Song and Score
The score for 127 Hours by AR Rahman is also quite remarkable. There are two ways score is approached these days – one is going by the reputation of the composer (I call this the Kris Tapley method, wherein he makes his predictions for the tech categories based on how well known or admired the designer is – usually works, eg Sandy Powell, etc.) and the other way is the Harvey Weinstein method of sending out the score as a hit record on its own. Both work quite well.
For song, it used to be that any celebrity name attached would get nominated – and eventually win. But at some point the voters got a little weird about it and decided that the song had to be integral to the plot and worked into the film, rather than merely tacked onto the end; we know this is silly and random on their part, as they still choose plenty of tacked-on songs.
At any rate, here is a rough list….
How To Train Your Dragon / “Sticks & Stones” – Performed by Jónsi
Jónsi Iceland’s biggest pop star and lead singer of the international chart topping group Sigur Rós performs the end title song “Sticks & Stones” from the DreamWorks 3D Animation blockbuster, How to Train Your Dragon, one of the years best reviewed films. The song is also featured on the film’s soundtrack.
Why Did I Get Married Too? / “Nothing” – Performed by Janet Jackson
Janet Jackson does not disappoint on the lead track “Nothing” from hit-maker Tyler Perry’s latest relationship drama in which Jackson also stars. The airy ballad is vintage Janet Jackson with emotional lyrics delivered in a soft, but telling way. This multiple award winner co-wrote the song with Grammy winner Jermaine Dupri, Johnta Austin, and Bryan-Michael Cox.
Burlesque / “Bound to You” – Performed by Christina Aguilera
Referred to as the “voice of her generation,” Christina Aguilera makes her theatrical film and musical debut as the lead character in Burlesque. Her electrifying vocals on the films track “Bound To You” will remind you why this starlet is a 5-time Grammy winner!
127 Hours / “If I Rise” – Performed by Dido
Grammy nominated English singer/songwriter Dido, who shot to success after her debut album sold 21 million copies worldwide, displays her unique vocal abilities on “If I Rise”. Dido collaborated with 2-time Oscar winner A.R. Rahman on the song, which is featured in the climax of this compelling film.
Country Strong / “Coming Home”, “Me and Tennessee” – Performed by Gwyneth Paltrow
This compelling film about a troubled country superstar attempting a comeback features two major songs; Gwyneth Paltrow performs “Coming Home,” a powerful ballad written by Bob DiPiero, Tom Douglas, Hillary Lindsey and Troy Verges. Paltrow also joins with superstar Tim McGraw for a duet on the original song “Me and Tennessee,” composed by A. Martin. This show stopping number is one of the film’s dramatic and musical highpoint s.
Waiting For Superman / “Shine” – Performed by John Legend
John Legend, the recipient of six Grammy Awards wrote and performs the powerful anthem “Shine” for the critically acclaimed documentary Waiting For Superman. This moving song is sure to be a classic from this landmark film about America’s education system.
Burlesque / “You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me” – Performed by Cher
Music has very few living legends, but Cher is one of them. She commands the screen in her first starring role in a decade, performing “You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me” written by the incomparable hit maker and six time Oscar nominee Diane Warren (acclaimed writer of Cher’s past megahit “If You Could Turn Back Time”). This ballad is a true show stopper in this film.
FOR BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Inception / Hans Zimmer
The brilliant Oscar winner Hans Zimmer teams with Christopher Nolan for the 3rd time, creating one of the most praised and innovative scores of the year. Once again pushing the musical envelope, Hans creates a musical world that perfectly compliments Nolan’s vision.
The Social Network / Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
Versatile producer and composer Atticus Ross continues his alliance with Nine Inch Nails lead singer Trent Reznor, who is regarded as one of the most influential, unique and talented musicians of our time. Reznor makes his feature film debut with the critically acclaimed score for The Social Network. Hailed as another “character in the film,” the score this story of innovation, determination and success.
How To Train Your Dragon / John Powell
Having penned the score for one of the biggest movies of the year, John Powell has made a name for himself by creating memorable original music that has unique melodies and textures. This family-friendly, animated action film is enhanced greatly by the epic Golden Age score. John Powell’s past credits include Shrek, I am Sam, Happy Feet and the Bourne films.
127 Hours / A.R. Rahman
Superstar musician A.R. Rahman, who won the Best Score Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire, once again teams up with Danny Boyle for this real life drama starring James Franco. The score is largely guitar driven, and Rahman is pitch perfect for the film’s most dramatic moments, eloquently reflecting the overall mood of the film.
The Tempest / Elliot Goldenthal
Oscar winning composer Elliott Goldenthal (Frida) has created a brilliant, eclectic and inventive score for his latest collaboration with longtime partner Julie Taymor. For this very cool version of Shakespeare’s final play, Goldenthal has used electronics, songs, and orchestra to bring this tale to life. Also nominated for his scores for Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire and Michael Collins, Goldenthal’s song for Frida “Burn It Blue” also received an Oscar nom, and the score won the award in 2003. Well known for his classical work, Goldenthal is that unique composer who moves easily between film, theater, opera, and ballet. He was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for his opera Grendel.
True Grit / Carter Burwell
The brilliant Carter Burwell, who has worked 15 Coen Brothers films, once again brings his unique and inventive style to this imaginative remake of the 1969 classic. Amazingly, Burwell has never been nominated for an Oscar, but has won countless awards for O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Fargo.
The Fighter / Michael Brook
Golden Globe and Grammy nominated composer Michael Brook (Into the Wild, An Inconvenient Truth) is known for his varied body of work, including his guitar solos for major motion picture soundtracks such as Black Hawk Down and Traffic. His score for David O. Russell’s The Fighter crafts together a composition that heightens the intensity of the film, which features magnificent performances by Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg.
Next Three Days / Danny Elfman
Oscar Nominee and former Rock and Roll superstar Danny Elfman has created an exciting score for Paul Haggis’ action thriller Next Three Days, starring Russell Crowe, Liam Neeson, and Elizabeth Banks. A bit of a departure from his work with Tim Burton on Alice in Wonderland, also one of the year’s best scores, Next Three Days showcases Elfman’s talent in this suspenseful drama.
The Town / Harry Gregson Williams & David Buckley
Golden Globe and Grammy nominee Harry Gregson Williams, who previously teamed up with Ben Affleck on Gone Baby Gone, collaborates with composer David Buckley on the pulsating score for Affleck’s latest film, the critically acclaimed The Town. With this film, the score provides an ambiance perfectly suited for this gritty, high intensity drama.
Never Let Me Go / Rachel Portman
Inspired by the highly acclaimed novel, Never Let Me Go highlights’ Rachel Portman’s ability to convey emotion through music. Love and betrayal are depicted in the film and the score pulls you into these sentiments vividly. Portman is the first female composer to win an Oscar.
Get Low / Jan A.P. Kaczmarek
With a tremendous international reputation that continues to grow, composer and Academy Award winner Jan A.P. Kaczmarek captures the quirky and sentimental feel of Get Low in his moody, blue-grass infused score. The cast of legendary actors in the film also makes the piece that much more enjoyable.
