Two decades of Rahman's magic
The Mozart of Madras, A.R.Rahman, recently completed a major landmark in his remarkable journey. It has been 20 years since this prodigiously talented composer entered the film industry with the evergreen Roja.
He has formed amazing combinations with many directors like Mani Ratnam, Shankar, Ashutosh Gowariker to name a few. His exploits are not just restricted to the Indian film industry as he is the much celebrated Academy Award winner as well.
He has won two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, four National Film Awards, fifteen Filmfare Awards, thirteen Filmfare Awards South and many many more. A true living legend and a fine human being.
We wish his journey crosses many more landmarks. He is currently busy with Mariyaan, Kadal, I, Raanjhnaa and Yohan.

Wish ARR answers all these. Many of the fellow Rahmaniacs would have the same questions in their mind for sure. Just like you, I also have a problem with this over the top layering in some recent ARR numbers and I too felt if it has become a kinda burden on his shoulders. Old classics like 'Kadhal Rojave' or 'Nenje Nenje' had minimal layering and how sweet they still are.

Yes. ARR himself said that in Raavanan Audio release function. In this era, I can't believe that someone is unavailable or inaccesible. Also, this song needed not more than 6 lines. Vairamuthu would have written it in few minutes.

Whilst making the list I knew I had to be adamant, even if it meant that I equally enjoyed the songs. The motive with which I made the list was related to how much impact did the song have on me as a first impression. Hence, the list. I personally was stuck whilst deciding during 1999 and 2000... Whopping number of releases  I was going to give a list of songs I considered but in words of Lethal Bizzle, I thought, "Leave it yeah!"

THE WHOLE CONCEPT ON HOW A R RAHMAN COMPOSES A TUNE (http://shamusic.blogspot.in/2012/08/he-whole-concept-on-how-r-rahman.html)
 for all the Technical & Musical Contribution of a Man who made new blood flow into the Whole Country's Music!
Something about the Technology Rahman introduced in Music :-
Rahman is the 1st MD who successfully pressed the Digital Button in Music, be it Filmi/non-Filmi. Like how lord Rama touched a Stone and It became Agalihai, similarly, once Rahman pressed the Digital button, the Electronic Music became an Industry Standard. Only real talents can change an whole industry, If all the technology he brought in, went to a MD who don't know technology, it would have set bad example! As the above blog said, Rahman is the great Sound Engineer of all the times. (This is not any pun intended, am truly saying the fact which everyoone knows, he pioneered the technology )
He is a great MD in making a composition look sophisticated, on its face! Not within, or deep, just on the face of the composition itself, his songs will look complex! Thats not an easy task, looking at anyways.
His efforts to encourage youngsters and offer them new possibilities to learn music is something very special! The KM Conservatory is an laudable effort of Rahman and in future, I hope talents coming out of that Music School! Also if one remembers, the Old Composing Contest happened on Sun TV, under his supervision, he assisted the winning teams to come up with their own album and recently it got launched too! -> http://videos.oneindia.in/watch/11766/a-r-rahman-launches-ooh-la-album.html
He is a smart composer and I strongly feel that somehow, he will stay in limelight for long time! Coming to his recent works, all i expect is, his future works shud be trendsetting/path-breaking and also very importantly, I somewhat miss the aura and excitement one gets during 90s whenever each and every of his album releases! That shud happen again! He has won almost all great awards and I expect he establishes new and un-imaginable benchmarks and he himself exceeds them!

The Rahman effect
It’s been 20 years since A.R. Rahman burst onto the scene with Roja. Here’s a look at the man who brought a new idiom and vocabulary to Indian film music.
They say that music affects the way we live. Our thoughts, our joys and sorrows, the way we think and the way we dance; all of it moving to the unending melodies and patterns of the soundtrack of our lives. In our country, this particular soundtrack has been crafted by a master magician over the past two decades. This particular individual has achieved certain things unimagined, constructing a web so expansive that the entire world has now been moved by his music. You can hear his music everywhere — from little villages in the Indian countryside to some of the most expensive performance venues in London’s West End. His musical output can present itself to you in little-known commercial jingles or even the incidental soundtrack of “An Accidental Husband”.
Most of us willingly search for his music, craving its warmth, its musical richness, its subtlety and its uncanny ability to reach deep within our hearts. A.R. Rahman is undoubtedly one of the few Indians who has achieved that critical transition from being a national icon to being a globally bankable musician. And all this for a reticent, deeply focussed composer ensconced behind a studio console in Kodambakkam.
Rahman is one of those composers who require little analysis. Every aspect of his oeuvre has already been examined and written about. He is among the few composers who has had books written about him while still in his 40s. His collaborations are far too many for one article to encompass but include the world’s best known musicians. The Roja man has come a staggeringly long way since that classic soundtrack emerged in the early 1990s. The dizzying heights of international stardom and multiple accolades aside, this analysis looks at his musical trajectory to comb for insights into that beautiful mind.
Game changer
To visualise Rahman’s music is to be cushioned by a ‘bed of sound’ — a hitherto unpredicted marriage of electronics with aesthetics. The music assails your senses, calming the mind in one magnificent sweep of transcendental sound. Each layer of carefully woven musical texture subsequently unfurls. An instinctive craftsman, each layer of instrumentation and voice is carefully proportioned. For instance, close your eyes and think of the theme song from Bombay for a delectable moment. The ‘bed of sound’ formed by string instruments in the lower registers open the first few bars, while a seductive flute softly announces itself slightly later. The piece broadens to herald the arrival of a welcomingly understated percussion before the entire string section takes over, each element enjoying adequate deliberation. To some extent, this loyalty to sonic proportion has proven highly popular to a global audience and continues to be one of his greatest assets.
This quest for elegance in sound and avoiding excess in every aspect has also prompted this master musician to introduce new voices into our lives. Indeed, Rahman can be credited with an entirely new paradigm where the voice becomes an ingredient to the whole, rather, being the basis of the composition. Who can forget Minmini’s ‘Chinna Chinna Aasai’ from Roja or Shahul Hameed in ‘Usilampatti’ from Gentleman? Or Chinmayi’s haunting rendition of ‘Oru Deivam Thantha’ (Kannathil Muthamittal), Naresh Iyer’s brilliance in ‘Roobaroo’ (Rang De Basanti), Rashid Ali in ‘Aditi’ (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na) or Benny’s youthfully exuberant style across multiple tracks?
Rahman’s talent for variety has seen the use of some of our best known classical vocalists: Unnikrishnan, Bombay Jayashri, Nithyashree Mahadevan and Kalyani Menon to name a few. Neither has he ignored the iconic Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam and K.S. Chitra who can all be heard in multiple albums.
Significantly, classical music finds its place in Rahman’s compositional graph quite frequently. From early forays using classical motifs in songs such as ‘Narumugaye’ (from Iruvar, featuring the voices of Unnikrishnan and Bombay Jayashri) or the soulfully melodious ‘Uyirum Neeye’ (from Pavithra, featuring Unnikrishnan’s voice) his tryst with classical music continues with the use of Hindustani elements overlayed with Sufi overtones in Jodha Akbar. Indeed, Rahman could possibly be credited with acclimatising today’s GenNext to a contextualised version of Indian classical sound.
Rahman’s strength in picking a phenomenally gifted team of professionals and fostering team play is another hallmark of a leader. His stable has catapulted several instrumental talents to the fore — Naveen (flute), Navin Iyer (flute), Keith Peters (bass guitar), Sivamani (percussion), Sanjeev Thomas (guitar) and Rashid Ali (guitar) among others. Sound engineers such as the late H. Sridhar, K.J. Singh and Resul Pookutty have also become personalities in their own right; the last being an Oscar winner himself.
Exploration and adventure
Perhaps a striking feature in Rahman’s music is the boldness of its design. In combining sounds, instruments, effects and voices that are unconventional and unique, Rahman proves himself to be a true explorer and adventurer. In ‘Masakkali’, a strident accordion embeds itself on rapidly ascending strings acoustically treated to be reminiscent of the sort of orchestral accompaniment that characterised the 1960s and 1970s film scores. In ‘Rasaathi’ (Thiruda Thiruda), instruments disappear completely and the entire song is rendered by voices singing a capella. As the real protagonist of Raavan (by Mani Ratnam) falls down a ravine to his death, a slow and haunting refrain winds its way into our ears, breaking our hearts with its unexpected softness. As crowds succumb to brute force and political injustice during a peace rally in Rang De Basanti, soft chords on the piano welcome the painfully beautiful ‘Khoon Chala’, surprising us once again with its complete avoidance of melodrama.
Rahman’s ability to work endless hours (there are several stories on the beat about meetings that take place in the wee hours of the morning), multi-task and visualise musical realities that transcend boundaries are perhaps just a few contributory factors to his success. For him, being innovative is a pursuit rather than a trait. Indeed, it takes a very rare mind to conceptualise each project as though for the first time, shedding ego and preconception so completely.
The Oscars, the Grammys, the BAFTAs notwithstanding, Rahman’s presence in the public consciousness of nearly half of today’s world has justified his inclusion into the list of the world’s most influential people by Time magazine. In recent times, he is among the handful in India who has achieved such pre-eminence.
It is difficult to fault Rahman. Driven compulsively to discover new sounds and meanings, he seems invincible. Rahman competes only with himself, constantly resetting the rules of his own game.
And still continues to grow, a feat that only he renders possible.

Music to our ears
Chitra B, Aug 19, 2012
Here to stay
“Ella Pugazhum Iraivanukke.” Glory to god. Thus reacted A R Rahman in Tamil, when he received the Oscar award. When the country celebrated its 50th Independence Day, it was this music composer who presented the famous Vande mataram. And when the World Classical Tamil Conference was conducted by the Tamil Nadu government a couple of years ago, Rahman came out with the theme song. These bits of trivia convey one thing above all — that Rahman is someone who won’t forget his motherland or, for that matter, his mother tongue.
In the recent past, a rumour doing the rounds in tinsel town stated that the ‘Mozart of Madras’ would leave for the United States as he was being thronged by offers from Hollywood. Adding to this claim, Rahman did not work in any new Indian film, after composing chartbusters for Vinnaithandi Varuvaya in 2010. Instead, he became busy with international projects. However, Rahman has proved his critics false, as he has signed on a slew of Indian film projects.
Says Rahman, “It’s true that I am getting international offers. But I cannot leave India. It was this land which gave me everything I have now. There is no question of quitting Indian cinema. The world is so small that now, thanks to technology, I can work from anywhere.”
For Kochadaiyaan, Rahman has completed composing songs and is waiting to score the background music. “Rahman’s music will be one of the highlights of the movie,” says a source close to the unit, adding that a song crooned by Rajinikanth has come out very well.
Way back in 1992, it was Mani Ratnam who launched Rahman with Roja and since then, Rahman’s music has been an inevitable part of Mani’s movies. Kadal is set against the backdrop of the lives of fishermen the in coastal areas of Tamil Nadu.
Barring Anniyan and the recent Nanban, Rahman was part of all Shankar-directed movies, right from his debut flick Gentleman. So, no wonder the filmmaker wanted Rahman to score music for I, which is touted as being his costliest film ever. “After Anniyan, this film unites two names of international repute, director Shankar and music king A R Rahman,” revealed a recent statement from I unit.
After Vinnaithandi Varuvaya, Rahman and Gautham Menon became so close that the music composer became one of the partners of the filmmaker’s production house Photon Kathas. If sources are to be believed, Gautham is the chief creative officer of Photon Kathas and Rahman, the creative adviser. As expected, Yohan Adhyayam Ondru, Gautham’s next film, has music by Rahman. Featuring Vijay in the lead, the film is touted as a high voltage entertainer.
Last but not the least is Mariyan, directed by Bharat Bala, with Dhanush in the lead. The relationship between Rahman and Bharat Bala dates back to 1997, when the two collaborated for Vande mataram, a music album celebrating India’s 50 years of independence. Mariyan is being made in Hindi and Tamil, and Rahman’s music is going to be one of the biggest USPs of the movie. This movie will also mark Dhanush’s debut in Bollywood.
Circles close to Rahman say he will soon sign a few more Indian projects as well as a few international albums and films. As recent as last week, Hollywood music composer Hans Zimmer expressed his gratitude to Rahman for contributing to the music of The Dark Knight Rises.
“Many filmmakers from India and other parts of the world have been approaching him. But Rahman is very selective about the projects he accepts. For, he is keen to strike a perfect balance between work, family and spirituality,” sources add.

Posted by Editor on August 18th, 2012
Oscar-Grammy winner A R Rahman, who is composing music for Dhanush starrer Mariyaan directed by Bharat Bala, has also crooned for a song in the movie. The number ‘Vizhithidu Nenje…’ sung by Rahman is expected to be one of the highlights of the movie, which is taking shape fast.
The song was recently shot on the lead pair of Mariyaan, Dhanush and Parvathy of Poo fame. The film produced by Aascar V Ravichandran is being made in Tamil and Hindi simultaneously.
Remember Rahman and Bharat Bala combined together in 1997 for the Vandemataram music album, which coincided with the 50th year of the independence of India.

Well, i agree there is a complete change in his music style after 2000. But, i wouldn't say it is a decline. Probably he works less in tamil and more in Hindi and since you don't listen to Hindi songs makes you think like that.

A tribute to Rahman's twentieth year in the industry
TNN Sep 11, 2012, 12.00AM IST
Tags:Slumdog Millionaire|roja|Raihana|Danny Boyle|A R Rahman(A R Rahman )This year is a landmark year for A R Rahman as it marks his 20th year in the film industry. The Mozart of Madras began his career with the seminal 'Roja' in 1992, which revolutionised Indian film music. He also won international acclaim with Danny Boyle's 'Slumdog Millionaire' for which he received two Oscars and Grammys.
And the celebrated composer is still going strong with over half-a-dozen high profile projects like Superstar Rajinikanth's Kochadaiyaan, Mani Ratnam's Kadal, Shankar's I and Yash Chopra's untitled movie in Hindi.
Now, to celebrate the Mozart of Madras's milestone, his sister Raihana is planning to hold a grand musical event in October along with a city-based music group. The event is expected to have popular actors and filmmakers from Kollywood who have worked with the maestro as special guests.

There are a few, who comes and tell me " A.R.Rahman songs r not worth the hype." "His music are nothing of an extraordinare". Then i told them, "If his music can nurture my heart to be soft enough to make me follow my Lord's path more devotedly, what ur saying is totally irrelevant." A.R.Rahman's music is full of soul, full of emotions, and full of liveliness. This is a truth, the truth and without a doubt, truth! :) His music made me connect with Shiva more deeply. His music prepared my heart for spirituality. A.R.Rahman's music, definetely God's gift to the music world. :)

A.R.Rahman to launch his son?
In a very exciting development, it is reported that the Mozart of Madras, A.R.Rahman has plans to introduce his son A.R.Ameen into films through his own home production. This movie is supposed to be about kids and that's why the ace musician is thinking of introducing his own son in a key role.
An official announcement is expected on this in December but Rahman has been heard quoting about this supposed project to a prominent media house. His son is all of 10 years old and fans will surely be interested in knowing more about this. We will keep you posted.

I never miss an opportunity to make music: AR Rahman
Oscars, Grammys, BAFTA, Golden Globe, National Awards... AR Rahman’s achievements read like a laundry list of global honours. With seven nominations at the upcoming GiMA (Global Indian Music Awards), he talks about achievements, new projects and the process of composing
music.
After all the honours you’ve won internationally, what do awards mean to you now?
It feels good to be nominated and awarded. Also, there’s a fanatic following that wants you to succeed. It’s a blessing. Also, winning an award is a high for the team of engineers and musicians who've worked with you.
What was it like to work on Yash Chopra’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan?
Yash Chopra has an amazing passion for love stories and Adi wants the movie to cater to a younger audience. The music has been composed keeping that in mind.
Did you work with new singers for the soundtrack?
Neeti Mohan will be making her Bollywood debut. Then, there’s Shakti, Javed Ali and Harshdeep Kaur. Rabbi is also there.
What is the process of exchanging ideas and briefs with filmmakers like?
Each team has its own way of working. First, I talk to them about what they are looking for. I ask them which songs of mine they have liked in the past and what kind of songs could work for their film.
Since music directors have to compose keeping the storyline in mind, do you ever feel restricted?
If I felt restricted, I’d make music and put it on YouTube. Even if a song doesn’t get through in one film, it never goes waste. There are always opportunities to use it later.
What was it like to compose for Raanjhana?
After Lagaan (2001), this is the first time I got to work on folk-classical music. The film brings out a fascination for Banaras through the music.
Which international projects are you working on?
Work on Monkeys of Mumbai is going great. There are a few other projects, but I can’t speak about them yet.
You are also making a TV appearance in an episode of MTV Unplugged. What was it like to perform your songs with acoustic music?
I had wanted to do that for a long time. The experience has been great.
How do you juggle concerts, recordings, composing and shoots?
(Laughs) I never miss any opportunity to make music. It’s a form of catharsis.
How do you think your sound evolved has over all these years?
The standards were always high. I have to keep working hard and rediscovering myself to maintain the standard.

My Hindi film career complete after working with Yash Chopra: Rahman
Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman has teamed up with Yash Chopra for the first time for the veteran filmmaker's much-talked about directorial venture " Jab Tak Hai Jaan".
The music maestro says with the project his Hindi film career is complete.
"Yashji saw one of my concerts in London. We had invited him and I think may be he felt that I should be in his film and was kind enough to call me. So it was a great honour for me because I had not worked with him. My whole Hindi film career is now complete," the 46-year-old said here Thursday at the announcement of Royal Stag Mega Music event.
"We had a very good experience so far. He seemed very happy and I hope the people feel the same," he added.
Talking about the kind of music done for the film, Rahman said: "It's a combination. They wanted to do my kind of songs at the same time they wanted the old charm and soul of music that Indian audience would love and which I wanted to do for a long time."
"We did in 'Taal' and 'Swades' and it's such a great thing to come together to do this," he added.
The music of "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" is yet to be released but the title poem penned by Gulzar is already creating waves.
The film hits theatres Nov 13.

tribute arr @GIMA.
ARR was awarded a special momento at the GIMA 2012 which was handed over by Yash Chopra for completing 20 years in Film Music.
Yashji was all praise for Rahman and said he was very fortunate and proud to have him compose for JTHJ....
Before this...a special musical tribute was performed by Singers & Musicians from Roja to Rockstar. It was a Medley of beautiful songs and was so refreshing to see all vintage singers performing.
Started of with Lagaan theme, followed by "Dil hai chhota sa" by Sadhna Sargam. She was joined by Hariharan for "Chanda re". Then Naveen took his magical flute to play the Bombay theme which was merged by "Tu hi re". Udit Narayan entered with "Mitwa" and Alka Yagnik complemented him.She then rendered the beautiful "Mehndi hai rachnewali" which got the loudest applause. Naresh Iyer's "Robaroo" got the house completely grooving and Mohit's "Saadda Haq" was the anthem of the evening. After all this heavy music...Sonu Nigam entered from the audience with just his voice singing a prelude to "Saathiya". This was the highlight as the entire somg was sung in Acapella style with no music but only Vocals & Chorus. Finally all singers joined in to sing "Jai ho" and calling Rahman on stage...This was the best gift and a pleasant surprise for ARR!
Do watch out the telecast whenever its gonna happen...

AR Rahman: Two decades and counting
The Mumbai rains refused to dampen the spirits of spirited attendees at the 6th Annual Global Indian Music Awards (GiMA) held at Yash Raj Studios on Monday night.
The ceremony, hosted by Saif Ali Khan and Parineeti Chopra, featured stellar performances by celebrated musicians and Bollywood stars.
There was a special act dedicated to the musical maestro A.R. Rahman for completing 20 years in the industry.
The Mozart of Madras was was felicitated by none other than veteran Yash Chopra. Renowned singers like Alka Yagnik, Hariharan, Udit Narayan, Naresh Iyer, Mohit Chauhan, Chitra, Sonu Niigaam came together to honour the music legend with a heartwarming performance to some of his popular chartbuster hits like Dil Hai Chota Sa, Tu Hi Re, Chanda Re Chande Re, Mitwa, Mehndi Hai Rachne Wali, Ru Ba Ru, Saathiya, Sadda Haq and Jai Ho.
On the special tribute given to him, A.R. Rahman says, “I had a hint about the tribute but I did not realize that it will create such huge nostalgia. I have learnt a lot from all these singers who have touched my heart today. I still remember the day of my first concert in 1996 when most of the singers who sang today came to watch me. I really thank GiMA for this. I am truly touched.”
Music maestro A.R. Rahman’s other half loves perfumes, we hear. And sources close to her reveal that her collection can rival some of the most ardent perfume collectors in the world.
It seems she’s so well acquainted with scents and fragrances that she can easily tell a person what he or she is wearing.
But the lady who is spiritual and has a strict no-alcohol policy, shops only for oil based perfumes which contain no alcohol.
The friend who was fortunate enough to receive the fragrances revealed that Saira is generous and loves having people experience the power of perfumes.
“She believes in the healing qualities of a good perfumed oil. The ones she buys are very soothing and long lasting too.”

New Delhi, Oct 30 (IANS) British director Danny Boyle, who worked with A.R. Rahman in two of his movies, calls the Indian composer a "genius" and says he loves the fact that the musician is so simple despite his "extraordinary fame".
"Rahman is something of a genius. But he's also very simple and I love that quality about him. He's straightforward despite his almost extraordinary, supernatural fame! I feel extremely lucky to have worked with him twice," Boyle said on BIG CBS PRIME's "India's Prime Icon".
Rahman created music for Boyle's 2008 Oscar winning film "Slumdog Millionaire", which also won the musician two golden statuettes.
Following its success, Rahman composed for the director's "127 Hours", for which he got two nominations for the Academy Awards.
The composer, also known as Mozart of Madras, has given Bollywood some of its most memorable melodies, including "Taal se taal mila" and "Dil se re".
Rahman will feature on "India's Prime Icon", which shows works of popular icons of the country from different walks of life.

It cannot get more real than this. Mani Ratnam was shooting for his Kadal in Kasimedu and Royapuram in coastal suburbs of Chennai as Cyclone Nilam slammed into the east coast on Wednesday!
Mani and his ace cameraman Rajeev Menon were shooting in coastal areas of North Madras. Mani the perfectionist braved choppy waters and gusty winds blowing at 80 kilometres per hour to get that natural tropical storm look for the climax of the film.
Kadal features debutant Gautham Karthik, son of actor Karthik and debutant Thulasi Nair, daughter of Radha in the lead roles and has music by AR Rahman. A song `Nenjukulley` from Kadal will be premiered by AR Rahman in the first episode of MTV Unplugged India: Season 2, scheduled to be telecast on November 3.
Arvind Swami one of the actors in Kadal tweeted: "Awesome experience of shooting in cyclonic weather in the sea for a sequence in Kadal."

Find out more on the phenomenon himself, as he features on India’s Prime Icon .

Thoroughly enjoyed the show. AR's singing was brilliant right through the set and the instrumentalists were very good too.
Call me biased, but like I've said several times before, the power of real/live instruments and unplugged playing is something special and it can elevate the experience of listening to music by several notches. Shows like the MTV Unplugged are testament to this.

I think I know the reason behind Rahman Ji being extra excited over the response. It's because certain people/fans have been doubtful in the past in relation to his live singing. If you ask me, then his cover for "Aaj jaane ke zid na karo" is parallel to the original if not better and I've never heard him sounding like this before. :totally-reinvented: The orchestration in the first interlude (not in the original) has been haunting me ever since I heard it.
However, I don't know whether Rahman Ji took a leaf out of Shankar Tucker's book, as he also released a cover of this recently. However, Rahman Ji has definitely made this his own song! Surreal, sumblim, divine, and I could go on and on!

In his latest attempt to spread the message of love, peace and unity, AR Rahman has posted a video invitation for people across the world for a project that involves answering five questions.
1. What is the first step in removing borders?
2. What makes you believe in Karma?
3. What is good music to you?
4. What does it take to be human?
5. What fuels your moral code? Culture, Faith or Law?
All entries are required to be sent to arrahman.invites@gmail.com. The entries will be used by Rahman's music school to spread the global message of love.

See that vengaayam Parthasarathy the way he asks his question, NeengaLum Which means, Rahman has got oscars, why not you too! So he wants Raja to do whatever rahman does. He almost keeps Raja in same pedestal of Rahman! What a pure crap!! Rajavum Rahmanum oNNaa! For that case, is any contemporary MD comparable with Raja?!? Nope! If you say yes, your understanding about Raja is too limited.
Also, what Raja says is true too, right?! He clearly agrees that the films are chosen only within the applied list of films. So can't there not be any artist/album outside Oscars? Is academy award the ultimate authority?? No right?! At max you can say that Raja is completely wrong when he says there is only 5 or 6 members in selection. There may be more and the selection process too may be too elaborate. So we can at max take it as an புரிதல் தவறு and it has nothing insulting or defaming even by in his opinion, about ANY of the Academy winners. There are many many neutral or not so side-taken, casual music fans who don't feel anything great in Slumdog millionaire, leave alone Raja fans. But wrt this answer, one need not even look at that point at all. Even without all that, what Raja said is nothing wrong. He is very low profile and sounds normal when he says "இந்தக் குழு தீர்மானிப்பதுதான் உயர்ந்தது என்று அர்த்தமில்லை! அதைவிடச் சிறந்த இசை அவர்களின் கவனத்திற்கு வராமலே போயிருக்கலாம்."
Whatever, Raja is above all awards. No second opinion in that.
Now look at what Srini said.
http://www.mayyam.com/talk/attachment.php?attachmentid=1894&d=1352163537
Yes it is **his** opinion and he can have any opinion. Just that when he talks about creativity, knowledge in music, fast brain, its well known fact that Raja is megamiles away from any contemporary composers and Srini can just go to any of his industry friends and they will say the same.
//dig And now, even if you get into srini's opinion, he is a professional singer, he is a judge in music competitions, so he shud be knowing music. So if he says that Rahman has showcased his fast brain, super high creativity and even something beyond that, in that Kadal Song, As a musician Srini shud write and explain how did he arrive at that conclusion. But anyways that is not related to this post. And its not something new that Rahman composed a melody number. Its not even new that Rahman uses Live Instruments. But srini, suddenly, jumping and pouring power-statements like these, just feels that he is desperate to prove something
end dig//

This dig is just an example. There have been a truck load of incidents that've happened in the past. A revision of that will only take away your time and mine.
On fast brain, knowledge in music - who knows? Srini would've even had TR in mind. He has a pretty fast brain I believe.
Last but not least, I will put an end to this matter here - for the respect I have for LM. :)

Some more extended thoughts. Just want to know what exactly did Rahman accomplish after, and with the success of winning mutiple awards, incl an academy award? Again I am asking this to know an answer and so don't jump on me just for asking the question.
He along with tons of other hollywood upcoming MDs working for Hans Zimmer for some hollywoood film, did all that move any stone in hollywood, for him? How many mainstream american movie watchers know of Rahman now and actively listen him? What are the movies considerable to be called as hits for him in hollywood. Is he coming in top 10? 20?? 50???

He worked with Zimmer for performing in the Oscar ceremony and not for any movie. Post the Oscar win, he worked in 3 Hollywood movies. Couples Retreat, 127 Hours and People Like Us. CT's Na Na made it to the long list. 127 hours earned him 2 nominations - taking his total Oscar nomination count to 5. PLU released a few months back and we have to see what is in store. While his fellow MDs struggle to grab even black ladies aka filmfare trophies, I am at least happy to see ARR in the Kodak theatre year after year
On a side note, this has helped ARR to collaborate with many stalwarts for his subsequent works. Ann Marie, Jagger, Dido, Liz Phair, Orianti, etc.
I am not sure about the position he holds in Hollywood right now. And honestly, I am not too worried about that because I didn't expect him to be at the top all of a sudden. He did that here in India but Hollywood is a bigger ball game. Hope he makes careful strides to the top. No urgency.

Oh man Ajay! All I asked is **what** Rahman achieved in hollywood all these years and with all those films he worked on. And I am asking what is his real status there and not your opinon on how he will do in later years :lol2:
You are not sure about the position he holds in hollywood, and all that position was mainly becos of his winning of Academy award. So I am asking what opportunity did the Oscar winning bring him and how well did he make use of it. Athuve ungalukku unsure, appuram eppadi saar athai paathu orutharukku poraamai varum?!? I too agree with you. Its blaspemy to compare not just Rahman but any MD with Raja. And i have no issues with ur opinon too. Its ur right. But apart from offers/commercial-success/fame etc its critically agreed by many music reviewers from carnatic music industry, Bollywood stalwarts, All the contemporary MDs of South, and many more musically intelligent ppl that there just is no comparision or alternative for Raja's Talent.
Athai hit panna pOi thaane Srinivas E kooda, Fastest Brain, Vast Musical Knowledge nnu llaam solluraar?? Music Industry watchers very well know that Fastest Brain, Vast Musical Knowledge & Creativity are Child's play for Raja and till date there is no one who beats Raja in both Quantiy and Quality. This statement can be safely said along with agreeing all the achievements of Rahman. Both statements can live side by side and there is no issues at all. Just that When the experts say that there is no comparison for Raja, they very well excludes Rahman too from the already empty list! Also this statement in no way reduces the talent weight of Rahman, not makes fun or pun of criticizes Rahman's Excellence.

SKV - i have been watching/reading silently - first of all, why did IR related talk even begin in this thread ?? isnt it irrelevant to this thread's title ? I dont get it
plus, I dont agree with your line of thought abt Rajini's portrait gift to Kamal in a way humbling himself - adhu avaroda thanippatta karutthu, feeling etc etc - adhai avar sollumbodhu azhaghu + mariyadhai minjudhu - aanaa, adhaiyey naano neengalo sutti kambichhu 'dho paar, avaru ivarukku keezha thaan' nnu solradhu equivalent to begging/clamoring for attention - not necessary IMHO - coz we all know how kamal's or rajini's works affects/impacts us individually thats what matters
I wudnt care less, for what junta thinks/feels, or rather, what media's perception is abt what makkals think! we live in an age of blogs, and personal websites, and highly knowledgeable ppl contribute in those blogs, making mainstream media totally redundant - this trend can be obviously seen on the political front, where ppl are losing interest in mainstream media spouting nonsense, while ppl with indepth knowledge/sense of socio-political events and vast experience in these fields, give their educated opinions in personal blogs!
I wudnt care less what some ARR fan or for that matter even an IR fan tells me abt either of their music - so happens that my musical taste buds have been honed during the 1980s, 90s etc by the monster IR's genius - yenga poi suthhinaalum, kadaseela avar music sundi izhuppadhu is testimony to the impact his music continues to have on me - ARR getting an oscar or not, in no way diminishes my admiration for IR's music, nor does it make me feel bad abt ARR's better compositions, period!
konjam objectivity maintain panradhu betternu ninaikkaren
what ARR accomplishes or not in hollywood is entirely upto him - somone savvy enough to hire the Gorfaine / Schwartz Agency to get his job done in LA, does not need anyone from the TFM page to tell him how to go fashioning his career!
IR avar kitta varra projects ellam reject panradhum, othhukkaradhum avaroda choice.
though i used to get emotional 10 years ago, I have reconciled to the fact that these are two entirely different mindsets, one operating at a very-well organized structured professional level in terms of furthering one's career, while the other is slightly old-school in terms of all of these - btw, am not talking abt musical creativity!
as for 'sindu mundu sundakkaais, vendakkaais' talking condescending, derogatory stuff abt IR, i wud safely ignore them - they are simply not my equals, ungalukku eppadiyo theriyaadhu - i got better stuff to do
btw, 'nenjukkulley' continues with the kind of clarity in sound ARR always scores high on with every single instrument coming out perfectly - venumnaa we can discuss elsewhere how IR dumps layers and layers of instrumentals within 4 min in a track as in NEPV and though it has all come out well, IMO technology is struggling to keep up with his genius! idhu eppadi irukku ?!
to put it all in a nutshell, inga yaaru yenna solliyum, onniyum aagapporadhilla - neither ARR nor IR will decide on things based on any of this - avinga suyambu, yenna panradhunnu avingalukku theriyin - avinga music kekkaradhum kekkaama poradhum avaravar ishtam!

Sakala,
I clearly explained what ARR accomplished in Hollywood post the Oscar win. You carefully overlooked it.
On the jealousy part, I've always had that feel. Be it the needless dig on ARR"s 'Ella pugazhum iraivanukke' or the recent remark on the composer who works at night, my opinion only gets more and more instances to substantiate with. If people are failing to see that or refusing to see, then its their problem. And importantly, those remarks on ARR had nothing to do with music.
There were also instances when Raja had issues with synthesized sounds. Show me one post of mine or any other ARR fan bashing IR for that. We had let it go since it was not his way of composing music and his issues were understandable. He belongs to a different school altogether.
If Venkki wanted to question my post, then he has all the rights to do it. I don't think there is need for a facilitator there. If you find my post inappropriate, report it to the moderator. Stop grading it. Abaththam, arputham ellam avanga sollattum.

Srini talks about minsaara poove
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uE-p94Wryo
The original tune was for a female solo.. The Pallavi was different.. ARR had composed it with a mridangam loop and he had sung so many variations for about 25 minutes.. Then he called me and started editing it into a proper Pallavi charanam format .. And recorded the rough tune with me.. When the song rec happened it had become a duet and the Pallavi tune was freshly composed .. He taught me and I taught nithyashree the tune.. Hariji was supposed to sing the song but was out of the country.. I finished the track in 10 min since it was just a rough track for Hariji to dub later.. Nithyashri freaked out with alaaps and some jathis.. Then Palakkad sriram came and added some more jathis.. All this on some basic chords and a mridangam loop.. Then AR got into action and chopped the jathis placed the alaaps etc and got the basic structure going.. And then recorded the genius DA Srinivas on the mridangam .. If you notice the song starts with the same jathi that sriram did in the end..only diff is it is played on the mridangam.. They shot with this version and later Hariji came and sang my portion.. I have heard that and of course he sang it differently and more beautifully than me but it just did not suit Rajni on screen.. And both Rajni and ARR felt my singing suited the character better.. Fortunately for me the song was shot and done.. So my version stayed.. Hariji's Alaap stayed.. This was a stroke of luck for me more than anything else.. Since it was a rough I just got 10 min to do the song and that is what you hear.. Always wish that I had at least an hour .. But this incident goes to prove that nothing can stop you if your time is good.. At that point in time replacing Hariji was like a completely impossible thing..

Ajay,
Raja's comment for "Ellaa pugazhum iraivanukke", where is Oscar coming into picture? I don't remember if he said this b4 or after oscars. Even if he said later, i don't see a connection.
On that 'composer who works at night' again you have to tell what is insulting. Computer munnaadiye thoongi vazhigira composers kooda now turned towards Live Recording- is what he said. Ithula enna thappu? Thoongi vazhigira et all, you ppl got good opportunity to laugh at him  since its not like he peeped into panchathan inn to see Rahman sleeping at his 'night-time' work. And as i said, you, like any other Rahman fan comfortably skip how that moron framed the question to Raja. "Computers, tecnology etc use senju isai amaithu Kaatta Mudiyumaa" which naturally irked Raja. Namakku Rajavai yaar eppadi insult senjaalum, media enna kostin kettaalum, kaiya pudichi izhuthaalum kavalai illai. Aanaa Raja mattum atchara suthamaa pesaNum, sinnama oru mistake vanthaalum pothum, udane poraamai nnu sollidalaam! Aanaa yen poraamai, ethukku poraamai nnu solla theriyaathu!
And yes you said what Rahman accomplished in HW but you urself said you are unsure of the final outcome and also you didn't say what exactly happened for him in HW which makes another composer to feel jealous.
Synthesized sound - avarukku pudikkalai sari ok, thats something even yuvan uses. But what did Raja say? I don't know this incident.

Isn't it obvious that your questions on Rahman's success in Hollywood are rhetorical?
See, it is an undeniable fact that Rahman is the only Indian composer who enjoys both great popularity and critical acclaim. Rahman is the only Indian composer who has been able to enter foreign film industries in a convincing manner. Nobody else has managed to do that. Ithuve poraama pada koodiya vishayam thaane? He actually need not achieve anything in Hollywood. We all know what sort of a genius he is with or without success in Hollywood. In fact, there are many popular foreign artists who have expressed their interest to meet or work with ARR. Now, I can't provide a list of all the artists. I have read about them in different places at different times. Bryan Adams and Michael Jackson are two examples.
Regarding your comments on ARR as being merely a commercial composer, it is definitely not true. There are crores of fans who love the quality of ARR's music. His quality and true love of people towards his music has given rise to commercial opportunities for producers. Not the other way around. His qawwali numbers are great hits not because they are commercial. They are soulful numbers and people really enjoy them. Commercial success is a bonus.
We feel ARR is superior to all other MDs including IR. It is not because of ignorance or limited knowledge or anything like that. It is because of pure disinterest towards IR’s style of music. Fans like myself, Ajaybaskar, Maddy have all heard enough of IR music. We all feel he is a good composer but definitely not in the class of ARR. So, it doesn’t make any sense if you come here and force your superlative opinions about IR on us. We are obviously not going to accept them. If we did, then we would rather be IR fans instead of ARR fans.
You or other IR fans may feel that IR doesn’t need any of the success that Rahman got. That is perfectly fine. Yes, we are not going to accept it. But, that is how it is.
Whatever IR says in the media can be interpreted in any way. We feel they are not in good taste. You guys feel there is nothing wrong with it. In fact, it is not possible to be absolutely sure about his intentions. Athey maathiri than Srinivas sonnathum. One can’t be sure what he really had in mind when he made that statement. But, neenga ellaam unga threads la atha discuss panni avara kalaaikaliyaa? Athey maathiri thaan Ajaybaskar senjathum. I also did not like when Ajaybaskar brought the issue here. But, enna panrathu? Since this topic is on discussion here now, i would like to clear somethings with IR fans. What is it, that u guys keep saying A.R.Rahman is not good enough. I mean seriously, come on! He has given many many strong melodies, given good clean mass songs, good religious numbers, etc etc. When in 90s, many IR fans said " ARR songs wont be last longing. U wont be able to hear them 10 years later." Its been 20 years now, and just play Pudhu Velllai Malai from Roja, or Kannaku Mai Azhagu from Pudhiya Mugam and tell me, doesnt that melody still make ur eyes close and feel its quality? Or take "THee THee" and "Konjum Nilave" from Thiruda Thiruda, and tell me, its a pakka fast paced song, doesnt it still make u want to move along with it? ARR is never lower to IR anyday. If IR is superior to ARR, then ARR entrance into to TFM wouldnt be a huge success. Why didnt IR gave songs like Roja in 1992? Avaraley mudiyathethe thaaney? Even until now, i dont think IR could compose modern yet melodious songs like ARR. :)

For any unwarranted digs, ARR has replied in the best of ways known to him - climbing yet another step. I don't care about the lame and foolish remarks on ARR's achievements but I wanted to bring that to the notice of fellow hubbers here. That's why I posted it in the relevant thread. If Srinivas is not considered to be a qualified person to comment on IR, then similarly I would not consider IR to be qualified enough to comment on ARR.

Danny Boyle loves AR Rahman's simplicity
British director Danny Boyle, who worked with AR Rahman in two of his movies, calls the Indian composer a "genius" and says he loves the fact that the musician is so simple despite his "extraordinary fame".
"Rahman is something of a genius. But he's also very simple and I love that quality about him. He's straightforward despite his almost extraordinary, supernatural fame! I feel extremely lucky to have worked with him twice," Boyle said on BIG CBS PRIME's "India's Prime Icon".
Rahman created music for Boyle's 2008 Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire, which also won the musician two golden statuettes.
Following its success, Rahman composed for the director's 127 Hours, for which he got two nominations for the Academy Awards.
The composer, also known as Mozart of Madras, has given Bollywood some of its most memorable melodies, including Taal se taal mila and Dil se re.
Rahman will feature on "India's Prime Icon", which shows works of popular icons of the country from different walks of life.
