AR Rahman, the Mozart of Madras, Wins Heart and Soul of Boston

BOSTON--Boston never saw a more vibrant and colorful celebration of Bollywood film music than on the evening of October 24, 2014. The reputed Berklee College of Music honored the multi-talented Indian music composer A R Rahman with an honorary doctorate. Described by Time magazine as the "Mozart of Madras" and as possibly the most prolific recording artist in the world, Rahman has won numerous national and international awards including the Academy, Grammy and Padmabhushan awards over a career spanning 25 years of composing music for films.

The award ceremony by Berklee College of Music titled "Festival of Lights" was held at the historic Boston Symphony Hall. The symphony hall is one of the world's best acoustic auditoriums with the legendary Western classical musician Beethoven's name inscribed over the stage. Proceeds from the event went to a scholarship in the name of A R Rahman to expand educational opportunities for talented and deserving musicians from India to study at Berklee College of Music where Rahman had once aspired to study Jazz music some two decades back.

In an engaging two and half hour presentation, an international cast of artists from the Berklee India Ensemble led by artistic director and Berklee faculty member Annette Philip (a Berklee graduate) treated over two thousand members in the audience to fifteen of Rahman's compositions. The vocal ensemble was supported by a live orchestra led by Berklee World strings conductor Eugene Friesen. Guest artists from India, Bass player Mohini Dey and guitarist Prasanna (a Berklee graduate too) as well as Boston University Bhangra dancers added a unique touch to the presentation with their artistic contributions.. Over 66,000 people watched a live stream of the show, a world record for Concert Window, Berklee's streaming partner. Sponsors for the program included Harvard University South Asian Institute, Women of the World and Priya Samant.

Earlier in the morning, in a free master clinic open to the public, members of Berklee faculty, Annette Philip, George Clinton and Alison Plante and a few members of the audience posed questions to Rahman about his musical journey, the turning point in his life when he decided to choose music for a career, his work habits and the challenges he faced as a song writer and music composer. Rahman advised aspiring song-writers and composers at Berklee to be proud of their heritage and to study the Indian Raga system closely to understand its grammar, structure and nuances. "Once you do that, you should try innovative, out-of-the box strategies while preserving the sanctity of ragas." said Rahman. Rahman's personality traits as a simple and humble devotee of music who enjoyed experimenting with musical ideas from diverse world music cultures as well as cutting edge technology devices shone through the conversation. Short audio and video clips from Rahman's award winning musical scores, a short piano recital by Rahman's staff member, composer musician Kevin Doucette and Rahman's own demonstration on the Continuum keyboard added variety to the hour long discussion.

Some interesting moments in the question-answer session with the audience were when a fifth grader innocently asked Rahman what inspired him to make beautiful music and he replied "Beautiful people like you." There was a moment of humor in a situation when an Indian mother took the microphone and addressed Rahman. "If I have allowed my son to make a career in composing musical score for films, it is because of your success" she said. She then openly asked the celebrity if there were internship opportunities for her son. "Said like a true mother! Where is your son?" asked Rahman. The mother enthusiastically pointed to her shy son sitting quietly in the auditorium along with his classmates.

The evening's program was a spectacular production by all standards. A R Rahman's music rooted in Indian traditions and backed by a sizeable live orchestra was brought to life by a and a large Berklee Indian ensemble comprising of musicians, vocalists and instrumentalists from several different countries. The production was aided by a team of talented individuals who specialized in technical direction, sound and light engineering, music arrangement, costumes and dance choreography. A live orchestra comprising of four cellos, two harps, 20 violins and violas, sarod, oud, mandolin and guitar instruments for the string section, mridangam, tabla, western drums, chimes, dance bells and kanjira for percussion section, saxophones, trumpets, trombone, harmonium, flute and piano instruments accompanied a vocal ensemble of Berklee College students. "We have had intense rehearsals for over two months in preparation for this event" said Sarod player Sashank Navaladi who currently studies at Berklee College.

In the opening act, beautiful young women dressed in cream, red and gold ghaaghra cholis holding lighted lamps in their hands made an entrance on the stage to the background score of a melody set to Raag Khamaj. Emcee Chandrika Tandon and Roger Brown, President of the Berklee College of Music spoke about the mission of the college and extended a warm welcome to Rahman.

"Music has a rich history of fostering the next generation of talented composers and performers. Mr. Rahman embodies the spirit of Berklee through his creativity and openness to disparate musical styles that range from traditional to classical and from folkloric to the latest popular music trends. It is a great honor to welcome A R Rahman to collaborate with our students to share his immeasurable talents with all of us" said Brown.

Rahman, dressed in an elegantly embroidered lavender and black ethnic Indian suit joined the Berklee music ensemble and played on the continuum instrument for the first musical offering of the evening. Thereafter, the vocal and instrument ensembles collaborated together to present the Bombay theme followed by several vocal and instrumental music items. The patriotic song,"Yeh jo des hai tera" from the movie Swades was rich in harmony, the energetic "Chaiyya Chaiyya Chaiyya" and "Jiya Jale" songs from Mani Ratnam's movie Dil Se got the audience clapping and participating and songs in multiple Indian languages from award winning movies such as Slumdog Millionaire, Lagaan and Rockstar and Roja were featured . The show concluded with "VandeMataram" song in Sanskrit language with A R Rahman's singing "Ma Tujhe Salaam" along with the entire Berklee music ensemble.

The unique aspect of the presentation was that the choir backed by strings and percussion did more than just sing songs and play instruments. The singers moved about in every new song, changing formations from straight lines to interesting geometric shapes on the stage. Elements of mime, dance, music, recitation of rhythmic syllables and poetry blended seamlessly to create a variety of moods, from the sombre to the joyous through storytelling techniques that provided a glimpse - both into Indian traditions as well as universal human emotions. The stories of farmers in a drought stricken village desperate for rain was told in "Ghananana Ghanana Ghan" and Lord Krishna's divine consort Radha suffering pangs of jealousy were told in "Radha kaise na jale" (movie Lagaan). The story of romantic feelings of the heart were evocatively brought out in "Dil Se Re" and "Tu hee Re" while the Indian tradition of obeisance to Mother Earth was expressed in "Ma Tujhe Salaam". In a departure from the tradition of sitting upright for the entire duration of the concert, string instrumentalists swayed back and forth and clapped hands in Quawwali style to the sufi style rendering of the song "Kun Faya Kun" (movie Rockstar). An interactive exercise with the audience to create sounds of nature such as the whirling winds and incessant rain slowing down at times and gaining intensity at other times proved popular with the young and old. From start to finish, the two and half hour long program succeeded in engaging the audience with Rahman's musical works.

President of Berklee College, Roger Brown, Provost Lawrence Simpson, artist relations and strategy co-producer Clint Valladares were among the Berklee faculty who honored Rahman with a doctorate, noting that he joined a select group of performing and recording artists and educators to receive an honorary doctorate from the institution. Annette Philip, artistic director of Berklee India ensemble asked members of the audience to think of the teachers who had nurtured their interest in music and admitted that A R Rahman was the ultimate Guru to the members of the Berklee India Ensemble. "He leads by example" said Philips.

In his acceptance speech, Rahman said that he missed having his mother and wife with him at the ceremony. He praised the Berklee band for presenting his musical work in a manner that surprised him at his own creation. "They brought out the joy and did a great job with the layering of complex harmonies" he remarked. Rahman recalled the tough decision he struggled with in his early twenties — on one hand he wanted to join the Berklee College of Music as a student and on the other he was given an offer by noted film director Mani Ratnam to compose the musical score for the movie Roja. He chose the latter and commented that life eventually comes around in a full circle. "What a kind gesture to honor me with a doctorate. Thank you." said Rahman in a simple and down-to-earth manner.

President Brown added after the show "Perhaps best of all, the experience for Berklee students, performing in Boston's elite Symphony Hall, to a sold out show, with A.R. himself listening was an incomparable artistic and educational experience. Annette Philip, artistic director of the event and Clint Valladares of Berklee were pivotal in the planning and execution of the event and together, and they are taking the Berklee India Exchange to new heights".

Hans Zimmer, an academy award winning music composer who composed for more than a hundred films made in the United States had once said this about his peer - "In Rahman's music, it is the true soul of a good man that we listen to". To the music lovers in attendance at the Boston Symphony Hall as well as those feasting on the live stream of the performance of Rahman's musical works from around the world , Zimmer's comment struck a chord close to the heart.

Mona Gasolina is the pick of the album. The opening song Oh Nanba reminds me of the opening song of Minsara Kanna, another movie of KSR. Indiane Vaa and Unmai are situational and doesn't impress much as standalone songs. Oh Mannava is more like a Bollywood number than a tamil one.

I have never been a fan of ARR-KSR combo. Muthu being the lone exception. After some excellent outings in KT and I, I expected the law of averages to catch up with ARR and here it is. Neither ARR nor Rajni need each other anymore and hope they part ways. As an ARR fan, I would've wanted him to sign Vijay58 or Thala55 instead of Lingaa. And I guess my fellow Rahman fans share the same thoughts like me, which is quite evident from the fact that no one bothered to open a thread here.

Composing for mass masalas will be handicap for the creativity of MDs. That too for a Rajni film, an MD has to compose a customary 'Ennai vaazha vaikkum thamizhagam' type intro song, 2 duets and a philosophical number and all these numbers without heavy beats, taking Rajni's health into consideration. After few times, anyone will get bored and the boredom will reflect in the work. Thats why Rajni has to move to the likes of HJ, Vidyasagar.

ARR could've invested his time in Thala55, a cop story or Vijay58, a fantasy film - genres that ARR has rarely touched.

Lingaa album will definitely be a hit, thanks to brand Rajni and brand ARR. But what is the purpose of calling it a hit if it doesn't satisfy the fans of ARR and Rajni?

correct ajay. Usually a lot is expected for Rajni's intro song. The biggest letdown was Kuselan and "oh nanba" is not too far ahead:-(

Except "mona gasolina", the album has nothing new to offer. I like "en mannavaa" but as you said it is like another bollywood number.

Some people were slamming KT and Ai which had some excellent work. I wonder what they will have to say about this average album.

I am not sure Lingaa album will be a hit even with the 2 R brands.

Overall this year we saw some great/good albums from ARR - Highway (imo, his best this year), 100 Foot Journey, Kochadaiyaan, Kaaviya Thalaivan, and Ai. Million Dollar Arm soundtrack supported the movie well. Got to say at this time that Lingaa is a failure for thalaivar this year.

Believe me, at starting (1st listening) i thought this album a weakest album for ever in ARR career, i was ready to leave this album and stuck with #I and KT.
Now i am at 5th round, and suddenly the magic is come guys, but i admit no song have ARR touch except Mona Gasolina, give some more chance may be they will grow on you

i think we are being a bit unfair to KSR :)... Muthu is an out and out Rahman album........and Thenali is Kamal starrer....so leaving both the movies aside... ppl generally dont rate KSR-ARR movies that much....... Padaiyappa may sound average for some..........but i would rate the BGM for that movie as the best for a Rajini starrer (plz dont bring nettrikann or a thalabathy here.... i am talking about Rajini the phenomenon..who arrived from Annamalai)...each and every nuances of Rajini's style captured with ARR's BGMs....... and Varalaru........... had Sun TV bought the rights of that movie (i believe they blacked out this movie because Ajith did not attend a parattu vizha for paasa thalaivar at that time and so it went to Raj TV) and adequate promotions been done, the songs in this movie would have rightly got the deserved reach ........ again in this movie...i dont know about others...i felt the BGM was great...... esp wherever Ajith's style was rocking........ in the Senior Ajith vs Villain son Ajith encounters, top one being the scene where Senior Ajith finally decides to get up, and in the senior Ajith's marriage scene............. when kanika gets to hear about Ajith from her friends and when he was coming down in the stairs

about lingaa...i am yet to hear the songs so i reserve my feedback...but ovvoruthar rendu moonu songs pick panni...maththa song waste nu solranga.... and each one solrathum different two songs ah than irukku........ except Mona Gasolina which seems to be a unanimous favorite....

I dont know why u guys are complaining!. IMO Lingaa songs are way better than enthiran or the recent AI songs.
THe song MONA has very exciting tune, just like other fresh tunes from the rest of the album.
Maybe people are expecting simple catchy tunes.

லிங்கா பாடல்கள் - புயலும் புலிகளும்

இந்த வருடத்தில் மட்டும் இசைப்புயல் ரஹ்மான் தனது 9வது படத்தின் பாடல்களை (ஹிந்தி, ஆங்கிலமும் சேர்த்து) வெளியிட்டுள்ளார் என்பது எல்லா இசை ரசிகர்களையுமே ஆச்சரியப்படுத்தக்கூடிய ஒன்று தான்.

நேரம் எடுத்து, ஆறுதலாக செதுக்கி செதுக்கி ஒவ்வொரு பாடல்களையும் ஒன்றிலிருந்து வேறுபடுத்தி, வித்தியாசம் காட்டும் ரஹ்மானின் பாடல்கள், அவரது இந்தப் புதுமை புகுத்தும் முயற்சிகளாலும், ஒவ்வொரு காலகட்டத்திலும் தன்னையும் இசையையும் புதுமைப்படுத்தும் மேம்படுத்தல் பரீட்சார்த்தங்களால் தான் அனேக சராசரி ரசிகர்களிடம் போய்ச் சேர்வது கிடையாது.

அல்லது சில காலத்தின் பின்னரே எல்லாத் தரப்பாலும் ரசிக்கப்படுவதுண்டு.
ரஹ்மானின் பாடல்கள் கேட்கக் கேட்கத் தான் பிடிக்கும் என்று பரவலாகக் கருதப்படுவதற்கும் இதே தான் காரணம்.

ஆனால் கேட்ட உடனே சட்டென்று பிடித்துப் போகும் இசைப்புயலின் பாடல்களும் இருக்கின்றன.

நான் இந்த லேட்டாத் தான் பிடிக்கும், போகப் போகப் பிடிக்கும் கட்சி இல்லை.
சில ரஹ்மான் பாடல்கள் உடனடியாகவே மனசுக்குள் ஏறி உட்கார்வதும் உண்டு..
பல ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு பாட்டில் உள்ள மஜிக் புரிந்தும் இருக்கிறது.
என்னைப் பொறுத்தவரை ரஹ்மான் எந்த இயக்குனரினால் வேலை வாங்கப்படுகிறாரோ அங்கே தான் தீர்மானிக்கப்படுகிறது இந்த ரசனை சார்ந்த விடயம்.

ஷங்கர், மணிரத்னம் ஆகியோரின் படங்களில் வரும் ரஹ்மானின் இசைக்கும், சில ஹிந்திப் படங்களில் வரும் ரஹ்மானின் இசை & பாடல்களுக்கும், K.S.ரவிக்குமார் மற்றும் இதர இயக்குனர்களின் படங்களில் வரும் இசைக்கும் இடையிலான வித்தியாசம் இங்கே தான்.


நண்பர் JKயின் ஒரு Facebook நிலைத்தகவலின் கீழ் கருத்திட்டபோது நானும் அவரும் பகிர்ந்துகொண்ட விஷயங்கள் இங்கே தரப்படுவது 'லிங்கா' பாடல்கள் பற்றி பேசும்போது முக்கியமானவை எனக் கருதுகிறேன்..

லோஷன்.. ஒரு பாட்டு உடனடியா பிடிப்பதை புரிந்துகொள்ள முடிகிறது. எனக்கும் இந்தப்படத்தில் மனோ பாடிய பாடல் உடனடியாகவே பிடித்துக்கொண்டது. ஆனால் சிலர் லிங்கா ( ஐ கூட) மொக்கை என்கிறார்கள். ஒரு பாட்டு மொக்கை என்று சொல்வதற்கு அட்லீஸ்ட் இருபது வருஷமாவது வெயிட் பண்ணவேண்டுமென்பது என்னுடைய எண்ணம். அதுவும் ரகுமானுடைய பாடல்களில் இரண்டு வகையே உண்டு. ஆனால் ரஹ்மானின் இசையில் 'எனக்கு' பிடிக்கவே பிடிக்காத பாடல்கள் ஒரு முப்பதாவது இருக்கும்.
அவற்றை என் ரசனைக்கு செட் ஆகாதவையாக நினைத்துவிட்டுப் போவதுண்டு.

இதைத் தான் நான் எனது முன்னைய சில பதிவுகளில் ரஹ்மானின் பாடல்கள் பற்றி எழுதும்போது குறிப்பிட்டவை.
ஹிந்தி, சர்வதேசம் என்று ரஹ்மான் தனது சிறகுகளை அகல விரித்தபின்னர், அவரது தேடல்கள் விரிய ஆரம்பித்தபின்னர் எனக்கும் என்னைப்போன்ற ரசனையுடையவர்க்கும் ரஹ்மானின் சில பாடல்களுடன் முன்பு மாதிரி நெருங்கி உறவாட முடியவில்லை.
அதற்குக் காரணம் அவர் தனது ரசனையை உயர்த்தியது; நாங்கள் அந்த ரசனையளவுக்கு எங்கள் ரசிகத் தன்மையை உயர்த்திக்கொள்ளவில்லை.

நண்பர் ஒருவருக்கு வழங்கிய கருத்தில் "ரஜினியை இன்னும் இளமையாகக் கொண்டு வர ரஹ்மான் இங்கே இசையை பயன்படுத்தியுள்ளார் "என்று சொன்னது பாடல்களில் நிரூபணம்.

ஆனால் படத்தில் இந்தப் பாடல் 'பழைய' ரஜினிக்கு வருவதால் அந்தக் காலகட்டத்துக்கு ஏற்றது போல வரிகளையும் யாத்து இருப்பாரோ?

இந்தப் பாடலின் பெரிய திருஷ்டி பாடகி அதிதி போல்.

ஐ படப் பாடல்கள் மூலமாக ரஹ்மானால் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்டவர்.

லிங்கா அணை கட்டும் பாடல் என்று வைரமுத்து தனது Twitter இல் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

இசையிலும் ரஹ்மான் 'ஒரே பாடலில் அணை கட்டப்படும்' இசை உணர்வைக் கொடுக்கிறார்.

வரிகள் தைத்தாலும், பாடலில் விசேடம் இல்லாதது போல இருக்கிறது.

அதன்படி செலக்ட் செய்து பதியக் கொடுத்திருந்த கேசட்டுகளை வாங்கப் போன போது, மணிரத்னத்தோட ரோஜா பாட்டு கேசட் வந்திருச்சு. நல்லா இருக்கு, வாங்கிக்குங்க என்றார் கடைக்காரர். இந்தியன் ஆயில் கார்ப்பொரேசன் அதிகாரி துரைச்சாமி கடத்தப்பட்டதை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்ட படம். தளபதியின் கலெக்டர் நாயகனாக நடிக்கிறார், புது இசை அமைப்பாளர் அறிமுகமாகிறார் என்ற அளவில் மட்டுமே கேள்விப்பட்டிருந்த நேரம். மணிரத்னமுடைய படம் என்பதால் நம்பி வாங்கினேன்.

டூரில் முதல் நாள் பிரியாணி சாப்பிட்டவர்கள் மூன்றாம் நாளில் மீல்ஸுக்கும் ஐந்தாம் நாளில் தயிர்சாதத்துக்கும் மாறியிருந்த நேரம். மலம்புழா டேம் செல்லும் வழியில் மதிய நேரம் ஒரு ஆற்றின் கரையில் வண்டியை ஹால்ட் செய்தோம். ஆகஸ்ட் மாத கேரள ஜிலீர் கிளைமேட், குளிக்க பதமாக ஓடும் ஆறு, அருகிலிருந்த ஓலை வேய்ந்த நாயர் மெஸ்ஸில் சுடச்சுட சாப்பாடு. 5 மணிக்கு கிளம்புவதாக பிளான் என்பதால் அவரவர் செட்டுடன் ஆங்காங்கே சுற்றிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். எங்கள் குரூப் பஸ்ஸில் ரம்மி விளையாடத் துவங்கினோம். வேற கேசட்டே இல்லையாடா என்ற நண்பனின் வேண்டுகோளுக்காக ஒலிக்க விடப்பட்டது ரோஜா படப் பாடல்.

வாழ்வின் இனிமையான தருணங்களில் ஒன்றாகிப் போன நிகழ்வு அது. அந்த கிளைமேட்டிற்கும், நட்பு அரட்டைக்கும் பிண்ணனியாக ரோஜா பாடல்கள். நல்லா இருக்கில்ல என்று பேசிக் கொண்டோம். அதன்பின் சில நாட்களில் ஆகஸ்ட் 15 அன்று படம் ரிலீஸானது. ஏ சைடு பூராம் ரோஜா பாட்டு பதிஞ்சு வச்சிருக்கோம். பி சைடுல பெரும்பாலும் சூரியன், அண்ணாமலை, தெய்வவாக்கு இல்லையின்னா செம்பருத்தி போட்டு கொடுத்திடுவோம் என்பார் கேசட் கடைக்காரர். கல்லூரி விழாக்கள், விசேஷ வீடுகள் என ரோஜா பாடல்கள் மெல்ல ஊடுருவி ரஹ்மானின் பெயர் பரிச்சயமாகத் தொடங்கியது.

ஒரு மனிதனின் வெயில் தாங்கும் திறமையை சோதிக்கும் பரிசோதனை களங்களில் ஒன்றான விருதுநகர் அருகே ஒரு கிராமத்தில் உறவினர் வீட்டு விசேஷம். 20 பேர் பிரயாணிக்கும் வசதி கொண்ட மெட்டடார் வேனில் நண்டு சிண்டுகளோடு முப்பதுக்கும் அதிகமானோர் மத்தியான உச்சி வெயிலில் வறண்ட கந்தகபூமியின் வழியே திரும்பி வந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறோம். இரவில் ராட்சஷர்கள் பல்லாங்குழி விளையாடுவார்களோ என்று நினைக்கும் அளவில் குழியும் சரளைக்கற்களும் நிறைந்த சாலை. ஆரத்திக்காக முன் யோசனையில் ஒரு குளிர்பான பாட்டிலில் மஞ்சள் குங்குமம் கரைத்து வைத்திருந்தார்கள். அதை குளிர்பானம் என்று நினைத்து ஒரு வாண்டு குடித்து, தான் காலையில் வெஜிடபிள் பிரியாணிதான் சாப்பிட்டேன் என்பதை வேனில் அனைவருக்கும் சந்தேகமின்றி நிரூபித்திருந்தான். சுற்றிலும் அவுங்க விசேஷத்துக்கு 101 ரூபாய் எழுதியிருந்தேன். இன்னைக்கு 51 ஓவாதான் எழுதியிருக்காங்க என்ற புலம்பல்கள் என ஐம்புலன்களும் சோதனைக்குள்ளான நேரம். அப்போது, வேன் ட்ரைவர் ஒரு பாடல் கேசட்டை ஒலிக்க விட்டார். அத்தனை சிரமங்களும் குறைந்தாற்போல ஒரு உணர்வு. வேனில் இருந்த பலரும் அதை அனுபவித்தனர். அதுதான் ஜெண்டில்மேன்.

அதன்பின் ஒரு மூன்று மாதங்கள் எல்லாப் பக்கமும் ஜெண்டில்மேன் பாடல்கள் தான். அந்தக்காலம் சிடி பிளேயர்களின் வருகைக்கு சற்றே சற்று முன்னாலான காலம். பிலிப்ஸ் நிறுவனம் டைனமிக் பேஸ் பூஸ்ட் அது இது என பல மாடல்களை இறக்கியிருந்த நேரம். அந்த டேப் ரிக்காடர்களின் டெமோவுக்கு எல்லாம் ஜெண்டில்மேன் ஒரிஜினல் காசட்டைத்தான் கடைக்காரர்கள் உபயோகப் படுத்துவார்கள். உசிலம்பட்டி பெண்குட்டியும், ஒட்டகத்தை கட்டிக்கோ பாடலும் ஒலிக்காத விழாக்கள் எதுவுமேயில்லை.

அதே ஆண்டு தீபாவளிக்கு மணிரத்னத்தின் திருடா திருடாவும், பாரதிராஜாவின் கிழக்கு சீமையிலேவும். ரோஜா, ஜெண்டில்மேன் வரிசையில் திருடா திருடா எதிர்பார்த்த மெகா ஹிட். ஆனால் கிழக்கு சீமையிலே? டெண்டுல்கர் அறிமுகமாகி பலரையும் விளாசி பெயர் பெற்ற நேரத்தில் அவரை இன்னும் வெகுவாக நம்பலாம் என்ற மாற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியது 92ல் பெர்த் டெஸ்டில் அவர் அடித்த சதம். எகிறும் பிட்ச்சில் ஆஸ்திரேலிய வேகங்களை அவர் ஆடிய விதத்தைக் கண்டபின்னர் அவரை சந்தேகத்துக்கு இடமின்றி அனைவரும் ஏற்றுக் கொண்டனர். அதுபோலத்தான் கிழக்குச்சீமையிலே ரஹ்மானுக்கு. மானுத்து மந்தையிலேதான் இன்னும் மதுரையில் காதுகுத்துக்கு தாய் மாமன் சீர் பாடல். இது மாற வெகு காலமாகும். தென்கிழக்கு சீமையிலேவும், எதுக்கு பொண்டாட்டியும் இவன் இருப்பான்யா இருப்பான் என எல்லோர் மனதிலும் ஓர் எண்ணத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியது.

அடுத்த ஆண்டில் டூயட், கருத்தம்மா மற்றும் காதலன். ரெக்கார்ட் எழுதணும்டா அந்த டூயட் கேசட்டைக் குடுடா, அலுப்பில்லாம எழுதலாம் என்று சகஜமாக ஹாஸ்டல் அறையில் பேச்சு கேட்கும். கருத்தம்மா அந்த அளவுக்கு இளைஞர்களை வசீகரிக்கவில்லையென்றாலும் போறாளே பொன்னுத்தாயியும், அடுத்து ஒரு ஜென்மம் வந்து ஆம்பிளையா நீ பிறந்தா பூமியிலே இடமிருக்கும் போய்வாடி அன்னக்கிளியேவும் உலுக்கத்தான் செய்தது.

ஒரு அலை போல அப்போதைய கல்லூரி,பள்ளி மாணவர்களை கிறங்கடித்தது காதலன் தான். இரண்டாம் மாடி கடைக்கோடி ரூமில் இருந்து கிரவுண்ட் புளோர் மெஸ்ஸுக்கு வந்து சேர்வதற்குள் காதலன் படத்தின் எல்லாப் பாடல்களும் காதில் விழுந்துவிடும். என்னவளேவும் முக்காப்புலாவும் கேட்டிராத காது கேட்காத காது மட்டும்தான். எந்த கல்லூரி கல்சுரலுக்கு போனாலும் சோலோவுக்கு என்னவளே பாடுவார்கள், வெஸ்டன் டான்ஸுக்கு முக்காப்புலா, போக் டான்ஸுக்கு கோழிக்குஞ்சு தேடிவந்த கோபாலா. டேக் இட் ஈஸி ஊர்வசி எல்லாம் ஆத்திச்சூடி போல அனைவருக்கும் மனப்பாடம்.

95ல் பம்பாய். பாஸ்கட் பால் விளையாட்டில் அணிகளுக்கு இடையேயான வித்தியாசம் ஐந்து பத்து பாயிண்ட்களுக்குள் இருந்தால் அது நிலையான முண்ணனி கிடையாது. ஒரு தம் பிடித்தால் எளிதில் அதை எட்டிப்பிடித்து விடலாம். இருபத்தைந்து, முப்பது பாயிண்ட் முண்ணனி என்றால் துரத்திப் பிடிப்பது கடினம். இதை துண்டாகப் போய்விடுவது என்று சொல்வார்கள். திரைக்கலைஞர்களின் புகழும் அப்படித்தான். மக்களின் ரசனைக்கு கொஞ்சம் மேலே இருப்பவர்கள் எல்லாம் கால வெள்ளத்தில் துரத்தி பிடிக்கப்பட்டு அமிழ்ந்து விடுவார்கள். தொடர்ச்சியாக சிறப்புகளை தருபவர்கள் தமிழ் சமுதாயத்தால் மறக்க முடியாதவர்கள் ஆவார்கள். ரஹ்மான் பம்பாய் பாடல்களின் வெற்றிக்கு பின்னால் துரத்தி பிடிக்க முடியாத அளவுக்கு சென்று தமிழர்களால் மறக்க முடியாத நிலைக்குச் சென்றுவிட்டார்.

Hmmm, me neither. I would still love all these albums irrespective of their positions in any hit list. In fact, my favorite Rahman album of this year is "Highway". That said, these ratings are a fitting response to those critics who proclaimed that Rahman was finished. I don't expect them to stop doing that either:-)

However, what these ratings do confirm is that Rahman is still the most sought after composer in India. Why it matters to me? I love his music and, Heavens forbid, if he is finished, then I will get to hear less of his music in TFM and HFM:-(

இசை பற்றிய ஆழ்ந்த புரிதல்....

Having started to listen music in 90s my first attraction was the 90s obvious michael jackson. Hated tamil songs that sounded very steretotype lalala types. One fine day heard chinna chinna asai from Roja..had absolute goosebumps and was spellbound by it. Though I was a kid to identify music directors those days could tell from the sound that it was rahman. Roja, kadhalan, Indian and all those years were unbelievable days of my childhood. This was India's Michael jackson songs. No more did i have to go to MJ.

When he broke into bollywood with Rangeela..I was so happy. Still remember when Rahman broke into bollywood and had slump I was praying that Taal becomes a huge hit and that the whole india appreciates him.

Hits after hits and i honestly believe that he is another MJ. He is another king of Pop. MJ started that style of Pop texture and Rahman has perfected it like none. Still think that Rahman should be a leading Global Pop artist and there is nobody currently on the Global Pop scene even close to his talents. Rahman seems to be trying with many single releases that but he lacks the glamour quotient, the marketability and gangam style surprises that is the launch pad for the global scene. Hope he gets that break and rocks. Still he has achieved all fame thats in offer with oscars and all global and indian honors which he richly deserves.

But thats not the story.

One fine morning i heard a song from a nothing movie called raasaiya and i couldnt get out of it for weeks. I felt so ashamed because it was lalala type. But still couldnt get out of it. I donno what was in it but couldnt skip humming that song. Then came to know that it was by Ilaiyaraja. Then came to know that there were many songs that were always there in the radios which seemed very pleasant were by this person.

One day got hold of cassestte called How to Name it by ilaiyaraja. And that changed my life forever. What it did to me as a kid is unexplainable in words. I couldnt digest the enormity and would keep crying most of the times when i heard some pieces in that.That started the unending search of this man called Ilaiyaraja. Started searching for every cassette from my dad's old collections. There were some great songs and some ok songs (to me as a kid at that time...The ok/mediocre songs were puzzling because how come a man who composes HTNI can do this...will come to it later). HTNI is one of the greatest musical albums to come out of the country undoubtedly. When Ravishankar is credited for fusion albums what raja has done here is a pioneering work like never before. He has composed as if Bach talks to Thyagarajah in musical terms and it is stands as a pinnacle work.

Then read his book called sangeetha kanavugal. He had thrown lot of names like bach, mozart, paul mauriat etc which were his inspirations. I found that these people are considered Gods of music in the traditional western world. Then i started listening to their works which was again heavenly. But i was shocked when hearing them. They sounded very familiar to me. Then i realised what raja was doing. He was taking all these masters and styles and giving it for us. We in tamilnadu’s villages were hearing to music which only the great european opera halls were serving. That started a lot of search again. My music was only MJ till then. Then it went from north/south/east/west. Listening to every genre out there..classical, pop, ambience, metal, funk, avant grade and all that..

So to come back to the question..The question should be a great honor for
Rahman but an absolute insult to Ilaiyaraja. That has nothing to do with Rahman. Infact there are very few contemporary artists in the modern world who can be compared with Raja.

Raja is a complete composer who has an authority of western classical, Carnatic and indian folk like no other. He is the first and still the only Indian musician who has understood cinema as an art form and acted like backbone to movies. His music is equally appreciated by both common man and balamurlai krishnas and hariprasad chaurasias.

I mean i cant think of anybody who can do a Western classical - like say a heyram, Indian Classical - like say a sindhubhaivari, Folk music - like say a virumandi or devotional - like a SRR or literary works - like a Bharathi or Thiruvasagam(Pls note that most of these albums are in the rahman era) or any rock, jazz, pop, blues, devotional, techno etc.. Name any genre. Raja is there. He is so authentic to the genre yet he doesnt just present the genre. He internalises it and indianizes it. He just represents the godly concept of all are different forms of the same principle.After all years of listening to various artists across the world,If you listen to Raja you really dont have to roam the whole world. Its all there. Even as a novice i can honestly realize this.

Look at his quantity of work. 1000+ movies. 5000+ songs. 1000*2.30hrs of Background sheet music. That is not humanly possible. There are people who believe that rahman songs are always good and raja has more bad/mediocre songs. Even my dislike for raja in the very early days was the same. But it is completely wrong. It is because we treat music from a likeability factor. That is a very Pop way of approaching music. For a master like Raja music is the communication of a concept in a musical way. Of the 5000 odd songs there would not be any single song which has no concept, technical brilliance, raga base or something or the other which would engage a careful listener. But an easy-go music listener will skip it as it is not likeable. Now after throwing away all these concepts of likeability, sensibilities, trends, popishness i can appreciate song after song and haven't had enuf of this ocean.

His songs are actual compositions as in you can play it instrumental, slow the tempo, change mood (many of his songs are used in both sad/happy versions in films) do all sorts of things keeping the composition intact...all this is possible because it follows a grammar that is so streamlined like a natural river. It is a very organic way of doing music.That is why his songs have high shelf life. that is why his songs can bring you undisturbed sleep and peace.

Raja is the perfect bridge between the pure musical movement and popular music movement. He brings the best of both worlds like no other has done. He has done some serious stuff but at the same time has been conscious of the fact that the common man should appreciate it. For a person with zero background on music, looking back at the amount of music that I have heard, the obscure genres that I have been able to appreciate, it would never have been possible without Raaja.

I can go on and on about raja and truly believe that he is one of the greatest artist of our times. Its sad that he isnt appreciated world wide. But i think that it can change any time. Like many great artists have been rediscovered he might be one day. But he has a godly status in South India and has a feverish fan following. That is going to continue for generations of music lovers. Any serious music buff cannot escape him.

Raja is the extention of the great indian film music tradition of Naushad, Salil da, Burman, KVM, MSV et all and has taken that to the next level. Rahman has gone in a completely different direction and has done well. My only concern is the nextgen of music directors are following Rahman's path as it being easy way of doing music. Wish this great country produces another great artist in that rich tradition.

Rahman is great. Like i said he is the king of Pop. But raja is well and truly beyond all that.

In fact, Rahman's greatness lies in the fact that he entered the industry at a time when it was dominated by the genius of Ilaiyaraaja and was still able to make a name for himself.

Another thing that irks me is the fact that these fan-boys continue to talk as if they are more matured, discerning listeners feasting on "kalyaana saappadu" while us Rahman fans are just children who are satisfied with fast food. We all know what we want and what we like. There is no need for any one to tell us what we should like.

1) தெரியாமல் மாட்டிக்கொண்ட கணவர்களே - இந்தப் பாடல் அமைப்பே அவர்தான் இசை ஞானி என பறைசாற்றுமே.. தீவிர கர்நாடக இசையில் கணவன்-மனைவி குடும்ப விஷயங்களை பகடி செய்யும் விதமாக... டைரக்டர் இதற்கான சூழ்நிலையை விவரித்தால் மற்ற எந்த இசை அமைப்பாளரும் இதுபோல ஒரு மெட்டை யோசிக்கவே முடியாது.. அதுதான் ராகதேவன்.. 5000 பாடல்களில் இதுபோன்ற யாருமே எதிர்பாராத வகையில் ஒரு பாடல் திட்டமைப்பு ஒரு நூறு இருநூறு பாடல்களில் வடித்திருப்பார்.. இதெல்லாம் வேறு யாருமே நுழைய முடியா இசைத் தீவில் ராஜாவின் தனி ராஜாங்கம்... (ஆரம்ப இசை மட்டுமே போதும்.. )

2) என்னைத் தொடர்ந்து : யேசுதாஸ் - ஜானகி இணையில் டாப் கிளாஸ் மெலடி..

1) தெரியாமல் மாட்டிக்கொண்ட கணவர்களே - இந்தப் பாடல் அமைப்பே அவர்தான் இசை ஞானி என பறைசாற்றுமே.. தீவிர கர்நாடக இசையில் கணவன்-மனைவி குடும்ப விஷயங்களை பகடி செய்யும் விதமாக... டைரக்டர் இதற்கான சூழ்நிலையை விவரித்தால் மற்ற எந்த இசை அமைப்பாளரும் இதுபோல ஒரு மெட்டை யோசிக்கவே முடியாது.. அதுதான் ராகதேவன்.. 5000 பாடல்களில் இதுபோன்ற யாருமே எதிர்பாராத வகையில் ஒரு பாடல் திட்டமைப்பு ஒரு நூறு இருநூறு பாடல்களில் வடித்திருப்பார்.. இதெல்லாம் வேறு யாருமே நுழைய முடியா இசைத் தீவில் ராஜாவின் தனி ராஜாங்கம்... (ஆரம்ப இசை மட்டுமே போதும்.. )

Again, this is where tastes differ. I personally don't find anything great in these songs but you do and good for you. But to expect everyone to accept greatness is what I call childish.

You conveniently left technical details in your reply and simply express your opinions - "no one else could have thought of this tune for this situation" and "it fits the situation", etc. You could say the same for any song composed by anyone (of course, provided it was original). What was technically so great about the songs?

If the author had said that most of Raja's songs had a concept and technical brilliance, then it is understandable. Again, not everyone would accept it but that's fine. But to say that every song is great is just fan-boy talk.

Great that you find divinity in his music. Perhaps it would not be too hard to understand that not everyone finds it that way? And if that would mean that I am a lesser mortal than you, so be it. Enjoy your superior status:-D

I have been listening to Rahman for more than 20 years and I still do because I am moved by Rahman's music (and, of course, Raja's too). There is absolutely nothing in the article that leads to the author categorically stating that Raja's music is the best thing since sliced bread. Obviously, I respect opinions and I respect his (and yours) opinion that Raja is the best but, again, it is just another opinion. I am not aware of any universal scale that can compare composers' works. In Jaya TV's 100 years of Indian cinema programme, Madhavan read a script which stated that Raja has eclipsed Bach, Veethoven, and Mozart. I am sure a lot of you would agree but there are some who would disagree too (mainly due to the question as to how they think Raja has eclipsed them). Most of the points in the article are also the same - very similar to your contention that "no other composer could have conceived of such a tune". I don't know why Anand chose to post it here as it is full of Raja fan-boy rants more than anything interesting - probably belongs in the Raja thread. Of course, one point that caught my eye is that the author states that he got into Tamil music due to "Roja" and eventually found the ocean in Raja's music - implying that he was a child when he liked Rahman and more matured when he started liking Raja. Another thing that he probably thinks that makes him qualified to put down other composers while placing Raja in a pedestal is his note that he has listened to all kinds of music.

This "Indianizing music" part is another thing I cannot fully comprehend. Perhaps Raja "South Indianized" it too much as is evident from the fact that he is adored more in the south than in the north?

நேற்றுதான் (5/12/2014)நேரம் கிடைத்து காவியத் தலைவன் பார்த்தேன். ஒரு intense period drama என்ற வகையில் மிக ரசனைக்குரியது.நடிகர்கள் பங்களிப்பு பாராட்டுக்குரியது. ஜெய மோகன்- வசந்த பாலன் கூட்டணியில் இன்னுமோர் நல்ல படம்.

இருங்கள் ,இருங்கள் . நான் சொல்ல வந்ததே வேறு.

இத்தனை பண்ணியவர்கள் இதயத்தை கோட் ஸ்டாண்டில் வைத்து techno -music பண்ணி கொண்டிருக்கும் திலிப் என்கிற ரகுமான் என்ற robot இடமா அதனை ஒப்படைப்பது? கே.வீ.மகாதேவன் போன்ற மேதைகள் உயிரோடு இல்லையென்றாலும், பழமைக்கும் புதுமைக்கும் பாலமாக இதய சுத்தியுடன் , படத்தில் ஆன்மா அறிந்து இசையமைக்கும் இளைய ராஜாவை எப்படி மறந்தார்கள்? இளைய ராஜாவை வைத்து, பழைய கால இசை கருவிகளையே உபயோகித்தோ,அல்லது ஹே ராம் போல புதுமையுடன் ஜீவன் கெடாமலும் பண்ணியிருக்கலாமே? இந்த படம் பார்க்கும் மனநிலையுடன் வரும் பண்பட்ட ரசிகர்கள், ரகுமானின் கன்றாவி இசை கேட்கவா வருவார்கள்?

இவரின் மிக பெரிய ரசிகன் என்ற விதத்தில் ,இவர் சமீப பத்து வருடங்களாக என்னை ரொம்பவே சோதிக்கிறார் ரகுமான். இப்படி involvement இல்லாமல், ஏனோதானோ பின்னணி இசை, பாடல்கள் நான் கேட்டதே இல்லை. இந்த படத்தை இசையே இல்லாமல் எடுத்திருந்தால் கூட ,இதை விட சிறந்த அனுபவத்தை கொடுத்திருக்கும். இளைய ராஜாவின் ஆத்மார்த்த இசை, அவதாரம் அளவிற்கு படத்தை கொண்டு சென்றிருக்கும். அருமையான ஒரு படத்தை ,ஆத்மார்த்தமாக ரசிக்கும் அனுபவத்தை கெடுத்த ரகுமானை, வசந்தபாலன்,பாலா,செல்வராகவன்,மிஸ்கின் போன்ற நல்ல இயக்குனர்கள் நாடாமல் இருப்பது நல்லது.

அந்த மொக்கை படத்தை ரஹ்மான் இசை இல்லாமல் சகித்திருக்க முடியாது. அவதாரம் படம் நல்ல இசை, படம் படு மொக்கை. இவை எல்லாம் இவருக்கு நல்ல படங்களாம், செல்வராகவன் நல்ல இயக்குனராம்:banghead: மிஸ்கின், பாலா போன்றவர்கள் பாதிக்கு மேல் காப்பி. வசந்தபாலன் சற்று பரவாயில்லை. இவருக்கே இவ்வளவு தெரிந்திருக்கும் போது வசந்தபாலனுக்கு தனது படத்திற்கு என்ன தேவை என்பது தெரியாமலா இருந்திருக்கும். இத்தனைக்கும் இந்தியில் மார்க்கெட் செய்ய வேண்டிய அவசியமில்லை. அதனால் ரஹ்மான் தான் வேண்டும் என்று காத்திருக்க வேண்டியதுமில்லை. அப்படியும் ரஹ்மானை இசையமைக்க கேட்டார்கள் என்றால்... ஒரு வேளை கோபால் இந்த படத்தை தயாரித்திருந்தால் சூப்பர் ஹிட் ஆக்கியிருப்பாரோ?

எல்லாம் சரி, எல்லோருக்கும் இசை பிடிக்க வேண்டிய அவசியமில்லை. ஆனால் கன்றாவி இசை என்று கூறிவிட்டு, தான் ரஹ்மான் ரசிகர், அதுவும் மிகப் பெரிய ரசிகர் என்ற கொக்கி எதற்கு? கன்றாவி இசை அமைப்பவரின் ரசிகராக இருக்க வேண்டிய அவசியமென்ன? இவர் யாரது ரசிகர் என்பது வெட்ட வெளிச்சம்.

அவர் குறிப்பிட்ட எந்த இயக்குனரும் ரஹ்மானை நாட வேண்டிய அவசியமில்லை. இவர்கள் யாரும் ஒன்றும் அவ்வளவு பெரிய அப்பாடக்கர்கள் இல்லை. இவர்கள் எடுக்கும் படங்களும் ஒன்றும் காவியங்கள் இல்லை. மணிரத்னம் (அவருக்கு சரக்கு தீர்ந்து விட்டாலும் கூட), ஷங்கர், மற்றும் இந்தி, ஆங்கில படங்களே போதும்.

Criticism should be constructive, more so, if you are a fan. You were just spewing vitriol at a composer who made a sincere effort in providing music for a period movie in such a way that it is liked by the masses today. And that music was appreciated by many including the director and producer who seemed very happy with the output. One could fully understand and respect your opinion that it didn't meet your expectations. But, using words like "kanraavi isai", "Robot", "techno music", "aathmaartham/idhaya suthi illatha isai", "idhayam in coat stand" in the garb of criticism when assuming the identity of a "fan" would make people doubt your genuineness.

It is the responsibility of the directory to extract music that will be liked not only by these so-called "பண்பட்ட ரசிகர்கள்" but by everyone.

RIP KB, the doyen of Tamil Cinema. This man needs no introduction - he introduced Rajni and Prakashraj and an adult Kamal Hassan. Chiranjeevi's first tamil movie was also directed by KB. Rahman's first movie was in KB's home production. He also worked with him in "Duet" and "Paarthaale Paravasam", both had great music. Most of KB's movies had memorable songs.

ரஹ்மான் சந்தோஷமாக இருக்கிற தருணங்களில் ஒரு பாடகரின் பாடலைதான் சப்தம் போட்டு பாடுவாராம். அவர் பாகிஸ்தானின் புகழ் பெற்ற பாடகர் நுஷ்ரத் ஃபதே அலிகான். தன் வாழ்நாள்ல ஒரு முறையாவது அவரை நேரில் சந்திக்கணும்னு நினைக்கிற அளவுக்கு அவரோட குரலுக்கும் ட்யூனுக்கும் அடிமை இவர். ‘வந்தே மாதரம்’ ஆல்பத்தை உருவாக்கும் போதே இதில் ஒரு பாடலை தனக்கு பிடித்த நுஷ்ரத் ஃபதே அலிகானை பாட வைத்துவிட வேண்டும் என்று நினைத்துவிட்டார் அவர். ஒட்டுமொத்த இசை ரசிகர்களையும் கிறங்கடிக்கிற அளவுக்கு இசை, ட்யூன் எல்லாம் ரெடி. நுஷ்ரத்தின் குரல் ஒன்றுதான் பாக்கி. தன் அம்மாவுடன் பாகிஸ்தானுக்கு பிளைட் பிடித்துவிட்டார் ரஹ்மான்.

அவர் மட்டும் என்ன சாதாரண பாடகரா? பாகிஸ்தானே பைத்தியம் பிடித்து அலைகிறது அவரது குரலுக்காக. ஏகப்பட்ட கெடுபிடிகளை தாண்டி நுஷ்ரத் ஃபதே அலிகானின் வீட்டுக்குள் சென்று விட்டார் ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மான். இந்த சந்திப்புக்கு ‘முன் அனுமதி’ வாங்கியிருந்தாலும், அரிவாளுக்கு வணக்கம் வச்சுட்டுதானே ஐயனாரு கோவிலுக்குள்ள போக முடியும்? அங்கேயும் ஒரு சில அரிவாள்கள் இருந்தன. செக்யூரிடிகள் என்ற பெயரில்! அங்கிருந்த காவலாளி ஒருவனுக்கு கடும் கோபம் வந்துவிட்டதாம் ரஹ்மான் மீது. ‘உன்னை மாதிரி ஒரு சின்னப்பையன் இசையில் பாடுறதுக்கு எங்க நுஷ்ரத் இந்தியாவுக்கு வரணுமா?’ என்று கோபத்தோடு கேட்டு தன் துப்பாக்கியை உயர்த்தியதாக கூட கூறுகிறார்கள் இங்கே. நல்லவேளையாக நுஷ்ரத்தே வெளியே வந்து இன்முகத்தோடு ரஹ்மானை உள்ளே அழைத்துச்சென்றாராம். பின்பு ‘வந்தேமாதரம்’ ஆல்பத்தில் அவர் பாடியும் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். ரஹ்மான் பற்றி கேள்விப்படுகிற எல்லா தகவல்களுமே ‘ஆஹா’ டைப்! இரவுக்கோழி! மது அருந்திவிட்டு யார் வந்தாலும் அவர் எவ்வளவு பெரிய இயக்குனராக இருந்தாலும் ஸ்டுடியோவுக்குள் அனுமதியில்லை. உலகமே தலைகீழாக புரண்டாலும் ஐந்துவேளை தொழுகைக்கு விடுமுறையே கிடையாது. இந்தியாவில் எங்கெல்லாம் புகழ்பெற்ற பழமையான தர்காக்கள், மசூதிகள் இருக்கிறதோ, அங்கெல்லாம் சென்று வழிபடுவது பிடித்தமான விஷயம்.

ஒருமுறை கொல்கத்தாவுக்கு சென்ற ரஹ்மான், அங்கிருக்கும் புகழ்பெற்ற மசூதிக்கு சென்றிருந்தார். நம்ம ஊர் பாரீஸ் கார்னருக்கு போனால், ஜன நெரிசலில் சிக்கி செருப்பு ஒரு பக்கம், விரல் ஒரு பக்கம் தொலைந்து போய் திரும்புவோமே, அப்படியொரு டைப்பான ஏரியாவாம் அது. அதுவும் நாலாவது மாடியிலிருந்தது அந்த மசூதி. இவர் தொழுகை செய்யும் அந்த நேரத்தில் விஷயம் வெளியே பரவி விட்டது. தொழுகையை முடித்து வெளியே வந்தால் அந்த மசூதி அமைந்திருக்கும் நாலு தெருவையும் அடைத்துக் கொண்டு ஜன வெள்ளம். எல்லாம் ரஹ்மானை காணும் ஆசையில் திரண்டவர்கள். அப்போது கூட அது தன்னை காண வந்த கூட்டம் என்பதை அறியாத ரஹ்மான், ‘ஏன் இவ்வளவு கூட்டமா நிக்கிறாங்க?’ என்று கேட்டுக் கொண்டே கேஷூவலாக கீழே இறங்க, ‘அம்புட்டு சனமும் ஐயாவை பார்க்கதான்’ என்று தெரியவே சில நிமிடம் ஆனதாம் அவருக்கு. ஹோய்… என்று ஒரே உற்சாக கூச்சல். ஒரு நிமிஷம் மருண்டு போனாராம் ரஹ்மான். விருட்டென்று திரும்பவும் உள்ளே ஓடிவிட்டார். அப்புறம் போலீஸ் வந்து இவரை ஜீப்பில் ஏற்றிக் கொண்டு போய் சேர்க்க வேண்டிய இடத்தில் சேர்த்திருக்கிறது.

உலகத்தின் எந்த மூலைக்கு போனாலும், ‘அட நம்ம ரஹ்மான் சார் டோய்..’ என்று எல்லா நிறத்தவர்களும் கொண்டாடுகிற அளவுக்கு புகழ்பெற்ற ரஹ்மான் தென்காசிக்கு போயிருந்தார் ஒருமுறை. வேறென்ன? கம்போசிங்தான்! ஜன்னலை தொறந்தா ஸ்விட்ச்சர்லாந்து… கதவ தொறந்தா ஸ்காட்லாந்துன்னு அவர் போகாத தேசம் இல்ல. எந்த நாட்ல இருக்கோம்னு ஏர் டிக்கெட்டை வச்சு தெரிஞ்சுக்குற அளவுக்கு சுத்தோ சுத்துன்னு சுத்தற அந்த இசைப்புயலுக்கு தென்காசியில் கேட்ட அந்த குரல் ரொம்பவே பிடிச்சுருக்கும். ஏனென்றால், கடவுளே கூட கண்ணப்பன்களைதானே ரசிக்கிறார்?

வழக்கம் போல அதிகாலை நாலு மணிக்கு தொழுகைக்கு கிளம்பிவிட்டார். குற்றாலத்திலிருந்து தென்காசி போற வழியில் இருக்கும் ஏதோ ஒரு மசூதி அது. இந்து மதத்தில் ஓம் என்ற மந்திரம் சொல்வோமே, அது போல குர் ஆனில் வரும் ஒரு வார்த்தையை முப்பதாயிரம் முறையெல்லாம் தொடர்ந்து உச்சரித்து மகிழ்வாராம் ரஹ்மான். அப்படிப்பட்டவருக்கு ஒரு மணி நேர தொழுகை ஒரு விஷயமே இல்லையல்லவா? தொழுகையை முடித்துவிட்டு அதிகாலை ஆறு மணிக்கு திரும்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள் அவரும் அவரது உதவியாளரும்.

வண்டி ஓரிடத்தில் வந்தபோதுதான் அவரது கண்ணில் பட்டது அந்த போர்டு. ‘திருநெல்வேலி ஐயர்வாள் ஓட்டல்’. ப்ளூ பெயிண்ட்டில் மின்னும் உயர்தர சைவ உணவகம் மாதிரியெல்லாம் நினைத்துக் கொள்ளக் கூடாது. ரெண்டு சவுக்கு கட்டைகளுக்கு மேல ஒரு பலகை. மற்ற ரெண்டு கட்டைகளுக்கு பதில் ஒரே உயரத்தில் அடுக்கப்பட்ட உடைந்து போன செங்கற்கள். அதுதான் டைனிங் டேபிள். உட்காருவதற்கு? முக்காலியே நாற்காலி. நாலு பேர் ஒரே நேரத்தில் சாப்பிட உட்கார்ந்தால், பக்கத்து இலை சாம்பார் நம்ம இலையை சைட் அடிக்கும்! இருந்தாலும் ரஹ்மானுக்கு அந்த ஓட்டல் பிடித்துப்போனது. ‘சூடா இட்லி கொடுங்க’ என்றபடி அமர்ந்தார். சாம்பாரின் சுவையும், அந்த அதிகாலை காற்றும், ஆங்காங்கே கேட்கும் சிட்டுக்குருவிகளின் சப்தமும், இன்னும் இரண்டு இட்லிகளை சேர்த்து உள்ளே இறக்கியது.

நடுவில் டீ வாங்க வந்த பையன் ஒருவன் ரஹ்மானை குறுகுறுவென பார்த்தபடியே இருந்தான். டீ யை வாங்கிக் கொண்டு அவன் கிளம்பிய பின்பு தனது ருசிக்கு தீனி போட்ட திருப்தியோடு எழுந்தார் ரஹ்மான். அதுவரைக்கும் கூட அவரை யாரென்று அறியாத காபி க்ளப் முதலாளி கண்ணும் கருத்துமாக ஆவி பறக்கும் இட்லியை கர்ம சிரத்தையாக ‘கம்போஸ்’ பண்ணிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். ஏதோ குற்றம் நடந்த உள்ளுணர்வில் சட்டென்று ரஹ்மான் சாப்பிட்டு விட்டு எழுந்த இடத்தை கவனித்தவர், ‘சார்… அந்த இலையை எடுத்து போட்ருங்க’ என்றார் கம்பீரமாக!

எழுபதாயிரம் அடி உயர ஓட்டல் மாடியில், ‘எக்ஸ்யூஸ்மீ’ மரியாதைகளோடும் கர்சீப் ஒத்தியெடுத்த வார்த்தைகளோடும் கவனிக்கப்பட்டே பழகிய ரஹ்மானுக்கு அந்த நிமிடம் இதழோரம் ஒரு புன்னகை அரும்பியது. ‘ஓ… ஸாரி’ என்றபடியே அந்த இலையை மடித்து, அதை மடிக்க தெரியாமல் தவித்து எப்படியோ கொண்டு போய் தொட்டியில் போட்டார். ‘இந்தாங்க…’ என்று ஆயிரம் ரூபாயை அவர் கையில் திணித்துவிட்டு ‘சில்லரை இல்லேன்னா பரவால்ல..,’ என்று புன்னகை சிந்திவிட்டு வெளியே வந்தால், அந்த ஊரே திரண்டு ஆச்சர்யமாக நோக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தது அந்த ஓட்டலையும் உள்ளேயிருந்து வெளியே வந்த ரஹ்மானையும். எல்லாம் டீ வாங்க வந்த பையனின் லீலை.

உலகெலாம் ஓதற்கு எளியவனா இருந்தாலும், பரமனே…ன்னு பல்லாக்குல ஏத்தி வச்சு கும்புடுறதுதானே நம்மளோட பண்பாடு? படைச்சவனே இறங்கி வந்து ‘தம்பி… ஒரு பாட்டு பாட்றீ’ன்னு கேட்கிற அளவுக்கு உலகெலாம் இசையில் உயர்ந்தவராயிருக்கிறார் நம்ம இசைப்புயல் ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மான்.

காலை ஜப்பானில் காஃபி. மாலை நியூயார்க்கில் ட்யூனு என்று விமானத்தில் பாதி நேரம், வேறோரு நாட்டில் மீதி நேரம்னு நடமாடும் இசையா, செவி தேடும் மழையா வாழ்ந்துகிட்டு இருக்கார் அவர்.

அமெரிக்காவில் ஒரு தெருவுக்கு ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மானின் பெயரை சூட்டி மகிழுது அந்நாட்டு அரசு. ஆனால் ‘தம்பி யாரு, எங்கேயோ பார்த்த மாதிரி இருக்கே?’ என்று கேட்கிற நிலைமைக்குதான் இன்னமும் இருக்கு நம்ம கிராமங்களில் பல. அப்படிப்பட்ட ஒருவரை நேரில் பார்த்தும், அசராமல் சிரித்துக் கொண்டே திரும்பிய அந்த ‘நைன் ஒன் சிக்ஸ் கோல்டு’ பற்றிதான் இந்த எபிசோட்!

அதை தெரிஞ்சுக்கறதுக்கு முன்னாடி தமிழ் கூறும் நல்லுலகத்தை தன் இசையால் மகிழ வைத்திருக்கிற ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மான் யாரோட ரசிகர்? அதை தெரிஞ்சுப்போமா?

ரஹ்மான் சந்தோஷமாக இருக்கிற தருணங்களில் ஒரு பாடகரின் பாடலைதான் சப்தம் போட்டு பாடுவாராம். அவர் பாகிஸ்தானின் புகழ் பெற்ற பாடகர் நுஷ்ரத் ஃபதே அலிகான். தன் வாழ்நாள்ல ஒரு முறையாவது அவரை நேரில் சந்திக்கணும்னு நினைக்கிற அளவுக்கு அவரோட குரலுக்கும் ட்யூனுக்கும் அடிமை இவர். ‘வந்தே மாதரம்’ ஆல்பத்தை உருவாக்கும் போதே இதில் ஒரு பாடலை தனக்கு பிடித்த நுஷ்ரத் ஃபதே அலிகானை பாட வைத்துவிட வேண்டும் என்று நினைத்துவிட்டார் அவர். ஒட்டுமொத்த இசை ரசிகர்களையும் கிறங்கடிக்கிற அளவுக்கு இசை, ட்யூன் எல்லாம் ரெடி. நுஷ்ரத்தின் குரல் ஒன்றுதான் பாக்கி. தன் அம்மாவுடன் பாகிஸ்தானுக்கு பிளைட் பிடித்துவிட்டார் ரஹ்மான்.

அவர் மட்டும் என்ன சாதாரண பாடகரா? பாகிஸ்தானே பைத்தியம் பிடித்து அலைகிறது அவரது குரலுக்காக. ஏகப்பட்ட கெடுபிடிகளை தாண்டி நுஷ்ரத் ஃபதே அலிகானின் வீட்டுக்குள் சென்று விட்டார் ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மான். இந்த சந்திப்புக்கு ‘முன் அனுமதி’ வாங்கியிருந்தாலும், அரிவாளுக்கு வணக்கம் வச்சுட்டுதானே ஐயனாரு கோவிலுக்குள்ள போக முடியும்? அங்கேயும் ஒரு சில அரிவாள்கள் இருந்தன. செக்யூரிடிகள் என்ற பெயரில்! அங்கிருந்த காவலாளி ஒருவனுக்கு கடும் கோபம் வந்துவிட்டதாம் ரஹ்மான் மீது. ‘உன்னை மாதிரி ஒரு சின்னப்பையன் இசையில் பாடுறதுக்கு எங்க நுஷ்ரத் இந்தியாவுக்கு வரணுமா?’ என்று கோபத்தோடு கேட்டு தன் துப்பாக்கியை உயர்த்தியதாக கூட கூறுகிறார்கள் இங்கே. நல்லவேளையாக நுஷ்ரத்தே வெளியே வந்து இன்முகத்தோடு ரஹ்மானை உள்ளே அழைத்துச்சென்றாராம். பின்பு ‘வந்தேமாதரம்’ ஆல்பத்தில் அவர் பாடியும் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். ரஹ்மான் பற்றி கேள்விப்படுகிற எல்லா தகவல்களுமே ‘ஆஹா’ டைப்! இரவுக்கோழி! மது அருந்திவிட்டு யார் வந்தாலும் அவர் எவ்வளவு பெரிய இயக்குனராக இருந்தாலும் ஸ்டுடியோவுக்குள் அனுமதியில்லை. உலகமே தலைகீழாக புரண்டாலும் ஐந்துவேளை தொழுகைக்கு விடுமுறையே கிடையாது. இந்தியாவில் எங்கெல்லாம் புகழ்பெற்ற பழமையான தர்காக்கள், மசூதிகள் இருக்கிறதோ, அங்கெல்லாம் சென்று வழிபடுவது பிடித்தமான விஷயம்.

ஒருமுறை கொல்கத்தாவுக்கு சென்ற ரஹ்மான், அங்கிருக்கும் புகழ்பெற்ற மசூதிக்கு சென்றிருந்தார். நம்ம ஊர் பாரீஸ் கார்னருக்கு போனால், ஜன நெரிசலில் சிக்கி செருப்பு ஒரு பக்கம், விரல் ஒரு பக்கம் தொலைந்து போய் திரும்புவோமே, அப்படியொரு டைப்பான ஏரியாவாம் அது. அதுவும் நாலாவது மாடியிலிருந்தது அந்த மசூதி. இவர் தொழுகை செய்யும் அந்த நேரத்தில் விஷயம் வெளியே பரவி விட்டது. தொழுகையை முடித்து வெளியே வந்தால் அந்த மசூதி அமைந்திருக்கும் நாலு தெருவையும் அடைத்துக் கொண்டு ஜன வெள்ளம். எல்லாம் ரஹ்மானை காணும் ஆசையில் திரண்டவர்கள். அப்போது கூட அது தன்னை காண வந்த கூட்டம் என்பதை அறியாத ரஹ்மான், ‘ஏன் இவ்வளவு கூட்டமா நிக்கிறாங்க?’ என்று கேட்டுக் கொண்டே கேஷூவலாக கீழே இறங்க, ‘அம்புட்டு சனமும் ஐயாவை பார்க்கதான்’ என்று தெரியவே சில நிமிடம் ஆனதாம் அவருக்கு. ஹோய்… என்று ஒரே உற்சாக கூச்சல். ஒரு நிமிஷம் மருண்டு போனாராம் ரஹ்மான். விருட்டென்று திரும்பவும் உள்ளே ஓடிவிட்டார். அப்புறம் போலீஸ் வந்து இவரை ஜீப்பில் ஏற்றிக் கொண்டு போய் சேர்க்க வேண்டிய இடத்தில் சேர்த்திருக்கிறது.

உலகத்தின் எந்த மூலைக்கு போனாலும், ‘அட நம்ம ரஹ்மான் சார் டோய்..’ என்று எல்லா நிறத்தவர்களும் கொண்டாடுகிற அளவுக்கு புகழ்பெற்ற ரஹ்மான் தென்காசிக்கு போயிருந்தார் ஒருமுறை. வேறென்ன? கம்போசிங்தான்! ஜன்னலை தொறந்தா ஸ்விட்ச்சர்லாந்து… கதவ தொறந்தா ஸ்காட்லாந்துன்னு அவர் போகாத தேசம் இல்ல. எந்த நாட்ல இருக்கோம்னு ஏர் டிக்கெட்டை வச்சு தெரிஞ்சுக்குற அளவுக்கு சுத்தோ சுத்துன்னு சுத்தற அந்த இசைப்புயலுக்கு தென்காசியில் கேட்ட அந்த குரல் ரொம்பவே பிடிச்சுருக்கும். ஏனென்றால், கடவுளே கூட கண்ணப்பன்களைதானே ரசிக்கிறார்?

வழக்கம் போல அதிகாலை நாலு மணிக்கு தொழுகைக்கு கிளம்பிவிட்டார். குற்றாலத்திலிருந்து தென்காசி போற வழியில் இருக்கும் ஏதோ ஒரு மசூதி அது. இந்து மதத்தில் ஓம் என்ற மந்திரம் சொல்வோமே, அது போல குர் ஆனில் வரும் ஒரு வார்த்தையை முப்பதாயிரம் முறையெல்லாம் தொடர்ந்து உச்சரித்து மகிழ்வாராம் ரஹ்மான். அப்படிப்பட்டவருக்கு ஒரு மணி நேர தொழுகை ஒரு விஷயமே இல்லையல்லவா? தொழுகையை முடித்துவிட்டு அதிகாலை ஆறு மணிக்கு திரும்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள் அவரும் அவரது உதவியாளரும்.

வண்டி ஓரிடத்தில் வந்தபோதுதான் அவரது கண்ணில் பட்டது அந்த போர்டு. ‘திருநெல்வேலி ஐயர்வாள் ஓட்டல்’. ப்ளூ பெயிண்ட்டில் மின்னும் உயர்தர சைவ உணவகம் மாதிரியெல்லாம் நினைத்துக் கொள்ளக் கூடாது. ரெண்டு சவுக்கு கட்டைகளுக்கு மேல ஒரு பலகை. மற்ற ரெண்டு கட்டைகளுக்கு பதில் ஒரே உயரத்தில் அடுக்கப்பட்ட உடைந்து போன செங்கற்கள். அதுதான் டைனிங் டேபிள். உட்காருவதற்கு? முக்காலியே நாற்காலி. நாலு பேர் ஒரே நேரத்தில் சாப்பிட உட்கார்ந்தால், பக்கத்து இலை சாம்பார் நம்ம இலையை சைட் அடிக்கும்! இருந்தாலும் ரஹ்மானுக்கு அந்த ஓட்டல் பிடித்துப்போனது. ‘சூடா இட்லி கொடுங்க’ என்றபடி அமர்ந்தார். சாம்பாரின் சுவையும், அந்த அதிகாலை காற்றும், ஆங்காங்கே கேட்கும் சிட்டுக்குருவிகளின் சப்தமும், இன்னும் இரண்டு இட்லிகளை சேர்த்து உள்ளே இறக்கியது.

நடுவில் டீ வாங்க வந்த பையன் ஒருவன் ரஹ்மானை குறுகுறுவென பார்த்தபடியே இருந்தான். டீ யை வாங்கிக் கொண்டு அவன் கிளம்பிய பின்பு தனது ருசிக்கு தீனி போட்ட திருப்தியோடு எழுந்தார் ரஹ்மான். அதுவரைக்கும் கூட அவரை யாரென்று அறியாத காபி க்ளப் முதலாளி கண்ணும் கருத்துமாக ஆவி பறக்கும் இட்லியை கர்ம சிரத்தையாக ‘கம்போஸ்’ பண்ணிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். ஏதோ குற்றம் நடந்த உள்ளுணர்வில் சட்டென்று ரஹ்மான் சாப்பிட்டு விட்டு எழுந்த இடத்தை கவனித்தவர், ‘சார்… அந்த இலையை எடுத்து போட்ருங்க’ என்றார் கம்பீரமாக!

எழுபதாயிரம் அடி உயர ஓட்டல் மாடியில், ‘எக்ஸ்யூஸ்மீ’ மரியாதைகளோடும் கர்சீப் ஒத்தியெடுத்த வார்த்தைகளோடும் கவனிக்கப்பட்டே பழகிய ரஹ்மானுக்கு அந்த நிமிடம் இதழோரம் ஒரு புன்னகை அரும்பியது. ‘ஓ… ஸாரி’ என்றபடியே அந்த இலையை மடித்து, அதை மடிக்க தெரியாமல் தவித்து எப்படியோ கொண்டு போய் தொட்டியில் போட்டார். ‘இந்தாங்க…’ என்று ஆயிரம் ரூபாயை அவர் கையில் திணித்துவிட்டு ‘சில்லரை இல்லேன்னா பரவால்ல..,’ என்று புன்னகை சிந்திவிட்டு வெளியே வந்தால், அந்த ஊரே திரண்டு ஆச்சர்யமாக நோக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தது அந்த ஓட்டலையும் உள்ளேயிருந்து வெளியே வந்த ரஹ்மானையும். எல்லாம் டீ வாங்க வந்த பையனின் லீலை.

எப்படியோ தப்பித்து ரஹ்மான் கிளம்பிய பிறகாவது, அந்த கிழிந்த இலையை கவலையோடு நோக்கியிருப்பாரா மிஸ்டர் முதலாளி?

(ரெக்கார்டிங் பாகிஸ்தானில் நடந்தது) ரஹ்மான் பற்றி கேள்விப்படுகிற எல்லா தகவல்களுமே ‘ஆஹா’ டைப்! இரவுக்கோழி! மது அருந்திவிட்டு யார் வந்தாலும் அவர் எவ்வளவு பெரிய இயக்குனராக இருந்தாலும் ஸ்டுடியோவுக்குள் அனுமதியில்லை. உலகமே தலைகீழாக புரண்டாலும் ஐந்துவேளை தொழுகைக்கு விடுமுறையே கிடையாது. இந்தியாவில் எங்கெல்லாம் புகழ்பெற்ற பழமையான தர்காக்கள், மசூதிகள் இருக்கிறதோ, அங்கெல்லாம் சென்று வழிபடுவது பிடித்தமான விஷயம். ஒருமுறை கொல்கத்தாவுக்கு சென்ற ரஹ்மான், அங்கிருக்கும் புகழ்பெற்ற மசூதிக்கு சென்றிருந்தார். நம்ம ஊர் பாரீஸ் கார்னருக்கு போனால், ஜன நெரிசலில் சிக்கி செருப்பு ஒரு பக்கம், விரல் ஒரு பக்கம் தொலைந்து போய் திரும்புவோமே, அப்படியொரு டைப்பான ஏரியாவாம் அது. அதுவும் நாலாவது மாடியிலிருந்தது அந்த மசூதி. இவர் தொழுகை செய்யும் அந்த நேரத்தில் விஷயம் வெளியே பரவி விட்டது. தொழுகையை முடித்து வெளியே வந்தால் அந்த மசூதி அமைந்திருக்கும் நாலு தெருவையும் அடைத்துக் கொண்டு ஜன வெள்ளம். எல்லாம் ரஹ்மானை காணும் ஆசையில் திரண்டவர்கள். அப்போது கூட அது தன்னை காண வந்த கூட்டம் என்பதை அறியாத ரஹ்மான், ‘ஏன் இவ்வளவு கூட்டமா நிக்கிறாங்க?’ என்று கேட்டுக் கொண்டே கேஷூவலாக கீழே இறங்க, ‘அம்புட்டு சனமும் ஐயாவை பார்க்கதான்’ என்று தெரியவே சில நிமிடம் ஆனதாம் அவருக்கு. ஹோய்… என்று ஒரே உற்சாக கூச்சல். ஒரு நிமிஷம் மருண்டு போனாராம் ரஹ்மான். விருட்டென்று திரும்பவும் உள்ளே ஓடிவிட்டார். அப்புறம் போலீஸ் வந்து இவரை ஜீப்பில் ஏற்றிக் கொண்டு போய் சேர்க்க வேண்டிய இடத்தில் சேர்த்திருக்கிறது. உலகத்தின் எந்த மூலைக்கு போனாலும், ‘அட நம்ம ரஹ்மான் சார் டோய்..’ என்று எல்லா நிறத்தவர்களும் கொண்டாடுகிற அளவுக்கு புகழ்பெற்ற ரஹ்மான் தென்காசிக்கு போயிருந்தார் ஒருமுறை. வேறென்ன? கம்போசிங்தான்! ஜன்னலை தொறந்தா ஸ்விட்ச்சர்லாந்து… கதவ தொறந்தா ஸ்காட்லாந்துன்னு அவர் போகாத தேசம் இல்ல. எந்த நாட்ல இருக்கோம்னு ஏர் டிக்கெட்டை வச்சு தெரிஞ்சுக்குற அளவுக்கு சுத்தோ சுத்துன்னு சுத்தற அந்த இசைப்புயலுக்கு தென்காசியில் கேட்ட அந்த குரல் ரொம்பவே பிடிச்சுருக்கும். ஏனென்றால், கடவுளே கூட கண்ணப்பன்களைதானே ரசிக்கிறார்? வழக்கம் போல அதிகாலை நாலு மணிக்கு தொழுகைக்கு கிளம்பிவிட்டார். குற்றாலத்திலிருந்து தென்காசி போற வழியில் இருக்கும் ஏதோ ஒரு மசூதி அது. இந்து மதத்தில் ஓம் என்ற மந்திரம் சொல்வோமே, அது போல குர் ஆனில் வரும் ஒரு வார்த்தையை முப்பதாயிரம் முறையெல்லாம் தொடர்ந்து உச்சரித்து மகிழ்வாராம் ரஹ்மான். அப்படிப்பட்டவருக்கு ஒரு மணி நேர தொழுகை ஒரு விஷயமே இல்லையல்லவா? தொழுகையை முடித்துவிட்டு அதிகாலை ஆறு மணிக்கு திரும்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள் அவரும் அவரது உதவியாளரும். வண்டி ஓரிடத்தில் வந்தபோதுதான் அவரது கண்ணில் பட்டது அந்த போர்டு. ‘திருநெல்வேலி ஐயர்வாள் ஓட்டல்’. ப்ளூ பெயிண்ட்டில் மின்னும் உயர்தர சைவ உணவகம் மாதிரியெல்லாம் நினைத்துக் கொள்ளக் கூடாது. ரெண்டு சவுக்கு கட்டைகளுக்கு மேல ஒரு பலகை. மற்ற ரெண்டு கட்டைகளுக்கு பதில் ஒரே உயரத்தில் அடுக்கப்பட்ட உடைந்து போன செங்கற்கள். அதுதான் டைனிங் டேபிள். உட்காருவதற்கு? முக்காலியே நாற்காலி. நாலு பேர் ஒரே நேரத்தில் சாப்பிட உட்கார்ந்தால், பக்கத்து இலை சாம்பார் நம்ம இலையை சைட் அடிக்கும்! இருந்தாலும் ரஹ்மானுக்கு அந்த ஓட்டல் பிடித்துப்போனது. ‘சூடா இட்லி கொடுங்க’ என்றபடி அமர்ந்தார். சாம்பாரின் சுவையும், அந்த அதிகாலை காற்றும், ஆங்காங்கே கேட்கும் சிட்டுக்குருவிகளின் சப்தமும், இன்னும் இரண்டு இட்லிகளை சேர்த்து உள்ளே இறக்கியது. நடுவில் டீ வாங்க வந்த பையன் ஒருவன் ரஹ்மானை குறுகுறுவென பார்த்தபடியே இருந்தான். டீ யை வாங்கிக் கொண்டு அவன் கிளம்பிய பின்பு தனது ருசிக்கு தீனி போட்ட திருப்தியோடு எழுந்தார் ரஹ்மான். அதுவரைக்கும் கூட அவரை யாரென்று அறியாத காபி க்ளப் முதலாளி கண்ணும் கருத்துமாக ஆவி பறக்கும் இட்லியை கர்ம சிரத்தையாக ‘கம்போஸ்’ பண்ணிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். ஏதோ குற்றம் நடந்த உள்ளுணர்வில் சட்டென்று ரஹ்மான் சாப்பிட்டு விட்டு எழுந்த இடத்தை கவனித்தவர், ‘சார்… அந்த இலையை எடுத்து போட்ருங்க’ என்றார் கம்பீரமாக! எழுபதாயிரம் அடி உயர ஓட்டல் மாடியில், ‘எக்ஸ்யூஸ்மீ’ மரியாதைகளோடும் கர்சீப் ஒத்தியெடுத்த வார்த்தைகளோடும் கவனிக்கப்பட்டே பழகிய ரஹ்மானுக்கு அந்த நிமிடம் இதழோரம் ஒரு புன்னகை அரும்பியது. ‘ஓ… ஸாரி’ என்றபடியே அந்த இலையை மடித்து, அதை மடிக்க தெரியாமல் தவித்து எப்படியோ கொண்டு போய் தொட்டியில் போட்டார். ‘இந்தாங்க…’ என்று ஆயிரம் ரூபாயை அவர் கையில் திணித்துவிட்டு ‘சில்லரை இல்லேன்னா பரவால்ல..,’ என்று புன்னகை சிந்திவிட்டு வெளியே வந்தால், அந்த ஊரே திரண்டு ஆச்சர்யமாக நோக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தது அந்த ஓட்டலையும் உள்ளேயிருந்து வெளியே வந்த ரஹ்மானையும். எல்லாம் டீ வாங்க வந்த பையனின் லீலை. எப்படியோ தப்பித்து ரஹ்மான் கிளம்பிய பிறகாவது, அந்த கிழிந்த இலையை கவலையோடு நோக்கியிருப்பாரா மிஸ்டர் முதலாளி? #ARRahman

MY TAKE ON A.R. RAHMAN CHOOSING LOVE (ARR's Oscar Speech)
Disharmony in one's mind can be attributed to strifes with colleagues, friends, family or society in general. The mind is prone to roving and is constantly witnessing good and bad results. Don't forget the mind can be a beautiful servant as well as a demanding master.
Our mind will definite play havoc the more we are exposed to negativity or can produce fruitful joy for us and others via positivity ultimately depending on the choices we uptake in life.
When taking up positivity reality sometimes comes and slaps us right around the face. A.R. Rahman Ji's Oscar Speech where he expresses he "Chose love" is a testimony that there is always hope in reaching the light at end of the tunnel and all we need is patience and perseverance.
The only thing that stands between us and reaching our goals is self-centerdness and ego and removing this will result in an enlightened intelligence which will make our mind our best of companions. Conversely getting trapped under our ego will not only create distances with others but result in us being victims of our own lack of awareness and ignorance. Shouting occurs because two hearts are so far apart and they need to overcome the distance, talking calmly occurs when people have an understanding and when people whisper or look into each other's eyes it signifies no need of words or language to express love.
A.R. Rahman has broken many boundaries, be it religion, race, culture, language, etc. He alone has taught us that we don't need to become a remote hermit or go ascetic penances to harness the mind but rather provide selfless service to others on a familial, national and international level.
He is truly a living example that if we can conquer our mind then we can conquer the earth.

Seeing him upfront or from far held less value for me. It was always the thought of sharing the same place with him that kept me going until and post the concert. His presence was just beatifying enough.
When I found out he was coming to London, I started burbling and inviting everyone I knew to attend his concert. Many friends and family members were frustrated that they missed out on the opportunity seeing him five years ago when he previously came for Jai Ho Tour so I didn’t exactly have to ballyhoo them as they were equally as excited as me to be part of the concert this year. They obviously sensed my excitement and knew what this event meant for me so when some of the most closest people in my life chose to share this happiness by joining me to attend, it certainly made me feel twitterpated.
The day itself was a great day for each and every fan but slightly more important for him as the significance of the occasion, location and date unanimously have a deep and rooted connection with with him: Fifteenth August, India’s Independence Day followed by Greenwich where he obtained scholarship from Trinity College London to the Trinity College of Music and above all it was this day twenty-three years ago when he debuted with the National Award Winning Soundtrack, “Roja”.
These factors contribute to an unexplainable notion that I feel as I’m writing this. Being twenty-six not only means I have practically lived with music for twenty-three years but my music sensibilities probably only emerged after hearing his music. Many people in the audience came from far-off corners of the world to show their appreciation and shower their love upon him. Not only was it is India’s birthday but the day is also considered as his second birthday.
This celebration was experienced with a divine aura which hovered over nostalgic, romantic, patriotic, enigmatic, and party songs. Time just went by in a jiffy and I and others are still awestruck and reliving this experience via pictures and videos shared from the concert.

Out of the memorable concert listed above there were many memorable segments that I will cherish for ever:
Arziyan, kicked off the night and the camera zooming onto Rahman Ji crooning, “Maula Maula” overwhelmed me emotionally and I just knew I was in for a ride that night.
A massive shoutout goes to the person who was waving the India flag before me during Yeh jo des/Unthan desathin kural, the patriotism was highly glaring as he stood up throughout the whole song waving it whilst others waving sat in between. Props to them! Also Rahman Ji saying, “Thamizha” and sending vibrational waves throughout the arena via his enriched singing caused the majority of audience to stand up, loudly cheer, whistle and clap for him and their respective motherland.
I couldn’t control my excitement and I just had to stand up clapping and uproar cheers for Annette Philip who with her scatting blew me away. I did feel guilty for causing disturbances but I don’t regret the moment of expressing my joy. It took me a day or two to find who she was.
Jonita Gandhi’s mind boggling versatility was another highlight for me personally as a lot of the people joining me that night asked about her. She dominated the first of the concert. Her Thamizh pronunciation has definitely leaped forward for the better but the big surprise came when she rapped in Humdum suniyo re /Endrendrum punnagai and flung her hat into the crowd.
Seeing Rahman Ji’s sisters do their bit for their brother in the backing vocals was a gratifying moment and apt proof that no matter how high one reaches the sky of stardom it is important to value the people who’ve known you since grass root level.
Naane varugiren left me asking for more and my whole body was trembling after Shashaa Tirupati and Haricharan’s spine chilling performance.
It would be unfair not to acknowledge the valuable members of the troupe, Naveen Kumar, Keba Jeramiah, Mohini Dey and Ranjit Barot stole the show in their own way. The other singers gave more than ample support in making this concert a life time experience.
The odd impromptu song Rahman Ji performed, the risibility he triggered and the interaction where he expressed mutual love with the audience definitely brought a sense of genuine familiarity we fans have with him when hearing and living his music. Everyone put their phone light on at his request during Maahi ve and despite his persiflage it looked as if a new city had been erected that night or as if the stars had fell from the sky. This was a sign of transformation in a person who didn’t have stage presence back in the day to being the Commander he is today.
He laughed, I laughed, He cried, I cried, He sang, I sang, He Jigged, I Jigged all in the name of Love, Peace, and Music!

Presently, Rahman is composing music for football legend Pele’s biopic, titled ‘Pele: Birth of a Legend’. In Kollywood, he is busy with a string of projects, including Gautham Vausdev Menon’s ‘Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada’.

Recently, Rahman met Pele in Kolkata. Before meeting Pele, Rahman posted on his micro-blogging page, “Excited to meet Pele this evening in Kolkata!” After the meeting, he uploaded a picture of him with Pele and wrote: “With the awesome Pele in Calcutta…!”

AR Rahman receives Hridaynath Mangeshkar Award

Mumbai, Oct 26 (PTI) Renowned music composer A R Rahman was conferred with Hridaynath Mangeshkar Award here this evening.

Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai presented the fifth Hridaynath Mangeshkar Award to Rahman on the 78th birthday of Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, well-known composer and the younger brother of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

"The music of Hridaynath-ji is an inspiration," Rahman said, adding that the Mangeshkar family has been upholding a great musical traditions across generations.

Ghai, who has worked with the 48-year old musician in "Taal", said more than being a celebrity, Rahman is a beautiful soul.

"He didn't know Hindi or Punjabi but worked 70 nights on the music of "Taal" and proved he is the best musician. He is not only a big celebrity, he is a beautiful soul," Ghai said.

Hridaynath Mangeshkar said Rahman had made the country proud with his outstanding contribution to music.

Grammy Award winning Hindustani classical musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and 2014 Grammy winner Ricky Kej were also present at the event.

The first Hridaynath Award was given to Lata Mangeshkar.

Asha Bhosle, Amitabh Bachchan and veteran actress Sulochana have also received this award in the past.

Rahman won the Oscar for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, sharing it with lyricist Gulzar, for Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" in 2009.

The composer has also won four National Awards in a career spanning over two decades.

He has recently composed for Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone starrer romantic-comedy "Tamasha", directed by Imtiaz Ali.

Thanks for the links Anand. I knew YGM is a crazy fan of MSV. He once mentioned that while Ilayaraja is a great music composer, he is not as great as MSV (his opinion, ofc). What I find honest is that he still thinks that MSV is the greatest but he thinks Rahman is a great human being. It might be true that he had to praise Rahman so much considering that a person of Rahman's stature watched his drama (medai alangaram) but still, there is some truth in his opinion that Rahman is a good man. As a fan of Rahman's music, it means little to me that YGM thinks Rahman is a great human being. But I share his opinion on "khwaja mere khwaja".

Mom, starring Sridevi, is an intense play. The dramatization of the incident - sex shoved with violence and then - violence provoked after the sexual act - are visually balanced between bloodshed and sentiment. What attracted me to watch the film is AR Rahman.

There is a virtual industry producing emotions inside. How would it be like to gain access into the corner of this factory, where a collection of all those ugly emotional break downs like anger, agony, shock, etc., resides. Inside this manufacturing den, a continuous chant echoes – a voice reciting the words of despair.

Siting in a corner of this haunted plant is a manual for retribution.

'I cannot be present everywhere, so I created Mom', the front page of the manual reads the author's note signed by God.

The instructions continue right away, "Not all is visible; few things could be seen only with eyes wide shut. At times righteousness is achieved through sinful acts. Neither one is justifiable though. That’s the wicked nature of Love. Get them all, set her free."

The key to exit this frightening industry is obtained only after distinguishing worse from worst.

'Raakh Baaki' is a tour into this scary part of the factory of emotions.

AR Rahman pops emotion out of the industrial sounds. The song is a short travel, yet an unforgettable one. Its gripping at the same time haunting, locking the listener inside a specific mood.

There are other fabulous songs in the soudntrack of Mom, just like the above one. About the movie, it does not depend who is watching, but what the person is looking for in the film. Mom-the film is a melodrama that explores couple of its characters in depth, and leaves the rest of them wander aimlessly in the film. Sridevi breaking down in tears at the hospital and then starring at the emptiness in the court room are scenes filled to the brim with emotion. As usual AR Rahman discretely stamps his mark.
