To pay respect to a soul that enchanted us with her voice and passed away due to sickness at an age of just 37 :-(

..my bed time song for the past two weeks. Her voice adds such quality to this already serene song. (She even outshines SPB in this one). The unique quality of hers - the joy or sorrow that she brought out was so inherent in her voice itself that I didn't need the visuals at all.

Watching Singer Mano talking about her (he was literally crying) made me even more sad. He mentioned that she hasn't seen much happiness in her life.

Except Raj Music, no tamil music channel seemed to bother. They could have atleast played her songs for half an hour.

Yesterday night as my wife was switching between channels, we caught the last part of a news item which said that 'Tamil film music industry is in a shock' and the visual had Swarnalatha singing. My wife was shocked and asked, "Has she passed away?". Only that morning she was insisting that my daughter learn to sing 'malayil yaaro' and 'ennulle ennulle'.

It really is a great pity to lose such an artist at such a young age. Similar to Jency and Uma Ramanan, most of what she sang under Raja were gems and as NagaS says, she did her own value add to these compositions. She did a great job under Rahman as well. A very unique voice which TFM has lost now. Very sad indeed.

Whats commendable is that she came at a time when Janaki, Susheela, Chitra etc were already preferred. And yet, she struggled and put in lot of hard work and earned her position. Not many singers these days can do that. They dont have to do that, because these days, all a singer needs is just that 'ONE' big HIT songs that catapults him/her to fame. singers like Swarna-latha had to sing many hits, to register their presence.

This is shocking indeed. Dying at such a young age! Despite great talent, Swarnalatha was greatly ignored by MDs in the last 8-10 years. There weren't any news items about her of late. She did appear in a select few music talent shows as a guest judge. She was so down-to-earth and humility personified.

She was one of the handful few who could sing in all languages without her native accent seeping through. She did full justice to the songs and could sing any genre with utmost ease. The 'bhaavam' or feelings in her rendition was most noteworthy. I don't know what her personal life was like. Singer Mano says that she didn't see much happiness. Sad indeed!

What's even more disheartening is that the TV channels which thrive on film music have not paid any tribute to her. There are umpteen number of songs in her vast repetoire to choose from... If Kollywood shows such attitude, can you blame the North Indian media?

NOV posted a youtube link that has Raj TV news telecast (showing her body being taken away from the hospital).

The reporter told that she never got married and dedicated her life to music. That's quite remarkable for a Palakkad person, where life is all about marrying and raising a family regardless of however talented one is in any field.

Not just the web media. Even the mainstream TV journalism has no credibility left these days. There's no fact check. Recent case in point: An NDTV journalist interviewed Amitabh on hearing the news of his National Award for best actor. He went on to say that this is his 4th award, having won his first National Award for Saat Hindustani. Other channels jumped on this bandwagon and added their creative element and presented the following 'statistics':

AB won his first National Award as Best Newcomer for Saat Hindustani and then had to wait for a long time until Agneepath happened. There was again a huge gap until Black and Paa happened in quick succession!

Another irritant is the so-called mainstream media's selective reporting: Even though Shaji Karun's Mal film Kutty Srank won the coveted Best Film Swarna Kamal and a relatively unknown Bengali actress Ananya Chatterjee won the Best Actress, the headlines screamed, 'Big B and 3 Idiots win big in the National Awards!'

Heard Kuyil Paattu from Rasavin Manasile last night. This is one of Swarnalatha's earlier hits and she does full justice to the song and brings out the emotions so well.. The song, set in Raga Shivaranjani, meant to depict the celebration of love and (new) life, also has an underlying meloncholy throughout, as if hinting at the impending gloom. Swarnalatha was always known for her clear diction, shruti, 'bhaavam' and her ability to reach higher notes without sounding shreiky. This song gives a good flavour of her talent.

She had a reverberating quality in her voice that could haunt the listeners for a long time. A fantastic mid-range singer with clear diction. I started appreciating her voice after reading the posts from this forum. I would miss her voice in TFM
