VIJAYAKANTH - Profile

Vijayaraj Azhagarswami Naidu (born August 25, 1952), professionally known by his stage name Vijayakanth, is a Tamil film actor and politician in Tamil Nadu, India. He is the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and a Member of Legislative Assembly representing Virudhachalam, Tamil Nadu, India.

Early life

Vijayakanth was born as Vijayaraj Azhagar Swami Naidu on August 25, 1952 in Madurai, India. His parents are K. N. Alagarswami Naidu and Aandal Azhagarswami who hailed from most prominent Balija Naidu family of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. He married Premalatha on January 31, 1990 and had two sons named Vijay Prabhakar and Shanmuga Pandian. Upon entering the film industry to pursue an acting career, he changed his name to "Vijayakanth", dropping the "raj" out of his name and suffixing "kanth," by director Khaja . He is nicknamed "Captain" which was taken from one of his popular films Captain Prabhakharan.

Career

Vijayakanth has starred in various hits such as like Amman Koil Kizhakkaley, Vaidegi Kathirundal, Chinna Gounder, Vallarasu, Vanathai Pola,Sethupathi IPS, Captian Prabakaran, Ulavu Thurai,Periyanna, Kannupada Pokuthayya ,Ramana, Neranja Manasu, Sabari. He was considered as the Third major star in Tamil films after Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan in the 80s and early 90s till now. He is instrumental in giving break to actors like Mansoor Ali Khan , Livingston, Saroja Sampath and Sarath Kumar . Of late he has stopped accepting offers from other producers and is also keen in acting on his own banner films.

Vijayakanth has given Blockbuster hits like Amman Koil Kizhakkaley,Vaidegi Kathirundal,Thavasi, Chinna Gounder, Vallarasu, Vaanaththaepole , Kannupada Pokuthayya and Ramana. He was considered as the third major star in Tamil films after Kamal Haasan and Rajni Kanth in Eighties and Earlier Nineties.He is instrumental in giving break to actor like Manzoor Ali Khan and Supreme Star Sarath Kumar. He has a very large fan base mainly in B and C centres.His Action Fims dubbed into Telugu often does good business.He has a peculiar style of fighting especially with his leg kicks which is very popular among fans. His famous dialogue from the film Narasimma 'Currenta thotta sadharna manishan thaan shock adikum. ana na Narasimma. Narasimmava thota currentuku thaan shock adikum' is also very popular. Vijayakanth is the only leading actor from Tamil Film Industry who has done only Tamil Films in his entire filmography of 150 Films. Moreover he has the habit of giving break to New directors. After a string of Average films, Arasangam , Vijayakanth's 150th film was declared as Super Hit.

He has been involved in several charity works. Vijayakanth served as the President of Nadigar Sangam before entering politics and was instrumental in holding star nite shows in Dubai and Malaysia. He bailed out Nadigar Sangam from huge debts during his tenure.
Vijaykanth as the leader of the Nadikar Sangam has proved to be a good administrator and able leader.

Awards and honours

Vijayakanth as been honoured with several allocades and awards from associations, such as Filmfare, Cinema Express, Cinema Studio, Malai Malar, Peasum Padam, Dinakaran, Makkal Kural, and the Mathi Arts Academy. In 2001, he was given the title and award of Kalaimamani from the Government of Tamil Nadu.

1981 - "Thoorathu Idimuzhakkam" selected for World Film Festival in Delhi.

1986 - Filmfare Best Actor Award for Amman Koyil Kizhakalae
1989 - Cinema Express Best Actor Award for Poonthotta Kavalkaran
1989 - Filmfans Award for Best Actor Award for Chindura Poove
2001 - Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu
2001 - Best Citizen Award by the mayor of the City of Houston, Texas and Best Indian Citizen Award by Citizens of India forum.

Anna! Shankar should have worked in many films with Captain, as an asst director. If that is the case, why didnt he opt for Captain in any of his movies like Gentleman,Muthalvan etc.

I know that Harris Jayaraj's dad was a part of "Coolikaran" movie team and i remember Harris taking lunch to his dad during the movie shoot.
This i got to know from Harris' speech in ARR oscar felicitation function.

And now, the filmmaker is gearing up to remake the movie with new faces in the lead. “SAC is currently busy holding auditions and will make an official announcement soon,” say circles close to him.

Saying that the new version would be made according to the tastes and preferences of the younger generation, they add: “The screenplay would undergo some important changes based on today’s scenario.”

Chandrasekar’s last production venture was ‘Veluthu Kattu’, which was directed by his former associate Senpathi Magan. The film which hit screens a couple of months ago was based on incidents happened in SAC’s life.

if you count in deva - he gave a phenomenal "Karuppu nilaa nee dhaan kalanguvadhEn" from en aasai machaan ? (which had murali and revathi - a senti movie by RSundarrajan). That film had more melodies which were heartfelt.
Now. someone needs to include MSV to the list for he has tuned some good songs in "Raja Nadai" (SAC direction - with baby shamlee saying en daddy routeE vera to charanraj).
It had a good melody "Thendralukku pirandha veedu podhigai allavaa".

I think it was Vijayakanth's own(or ravuther) productions? Jai has outlined most of the reasons.
We all kind of know that by the end of 80's R-K, V-S, P-K were considered the big six although not at the same level. It is to be noted that among the 4 lesser stars in this grouping, Vijayakanth was the first to make a mark. Amman Kovil, Vaidehi etc gave him an address. However, it was around Uzhavan Magan that he had this hype as next only to Rajni-Kamal. Own production, follow up to oomai vizhigaL by institute guys, production values hyped up in the build-up. Vijayakanth had truly arrived at that point. From there, it was downhill and a constant battle for survival for him. Uzhavan Magan itself wasnt as succesful as expected to be. After that it was a continuous cycle of 1 hit, 3 or more flops for him throughout...

nAn maRandhdhulEyE, biggest one I felt was poonthotta kaavalkaaran.

On Chinna Gounder, I think antha vanatha pola and especially kannu pada pogudhaiya were quite popular - to me, muthu maNi mAlai sounded less omnipresent those days. Maybe, if you considere FM re-runs now, MMM has the edge but it was KPP and AVP (esp in madurai tea stalls, as I had the fortune of being in Madurai at that time) all the way through.

Yes, I should have mentioned the songs in mAnagara kAval. Bose aNNan's interludes always put me off so melodies deserving attention got missed out. Nevertheless, in retrospect, they stand on their own.

Regards to sirai paravai - it was more of a radhika vehicle.
however the wonderful song "aanandham pongida pongida" still stops me in my tracks whenever I listen to it.
In pulan visaranai, captain prabhakaran- VK did not have any songs (true to hollywood action heroes style) - only grand BGMs. I think he was the first hero not to have a song in movies with songs. He has been cooperative to the director in many ways. I felt really great for him for having accepted to the Ramana climax. When I saw the telugu version - I felt a lot more better for his sense over Chiru's narrowed vision.

But the taking of it and VK's casual elegance makes it one of the top 10 hero entry scenes in Thamizh films to me.

In pulan visaranai, captain prabhakaran- VK did not have any songs (true to hollywood action heroes style) - only grand BGMs. I think he was the first hero not to have a song in movies with songs. He has been cooperative to the director in many ways. I felt really great for him for having accepted to the Ramana climax. When I saw the telugu version - I felt a lot more better for his sense over Chiru's narrowed vision.

We all kind of know that by the end of 80's R-K, V-S, P-K were considered the big six although not at the same level. It is to be noted that among the 4 lesser stars in this grouping, Vijayakanth was the first to make a mark.

Uzhavan Magan itself wasnt as succesful as expected to be. After that it was a continuous cycle of 1 hit, 3 or more flops for him throughout...

when Vijayakanth's slide started.. the other 3 are almost out of the race.. & youngsters stepped in..

Back to the thread - was watching the youtube of 'dhEgam siRakadikkum' song - a very sweet number by Raja. My 4 year old was around - who usually asks questions such as 'யாரு அந்த அக்கா - அவங்க பேரு என்ன' etc.

I couldn't control my laughter when she asked the same question for this song but immediately changed the question -"அய்யே அது அக்கா இல்ல, அம்மா, இந்த அம்மா பேரு என்ன' :lol:

Panneerselvam(Vijayakanth) is an ex-cop leading a peaceful, quiet life with his two kids. As the assistant commissioner, he was the man responsible for putting the all-powerful Annaachi(Thilakan) behind bars. But Annachi was powerful enough to pull a few strings even in jail and engineered a bomb blast that killed Selvam's wife Jaya(Revathi). This was enough to make Selvam quit the force. Annachi is now out of jail but Banu(Banupriya), who endears herself to Selvam's kids and falls in love with Selvam, has evidence that would put Annaachi back in jail. Annaachi also wants to see Selvam back as a policeman so he can extract revenge. For this, he is ready to go to any lengths.

Chatriyan has a set of memorable characters populating it. Vijayakanth is good as the dutiful father who resists going back to being a policeman fearing for the lives of his children. Ofcourse, the role of the honest cop fits him like a glove(probably from practice!). His bold actions as he single-handedly destroys Thilakan's regime in the flashback are nicely done. Thilakan is a worthy adversary to him. His Malayalam accent adds gloss to his role as the heartless thug and his insistence on seeing Vijayakanth back as a policeman before getting his revenge adds a new dimension to the character. He is chilling when he casually orders Vijayakanth's son to be hurt.

It was telecasted today(vinayagar chathurthi) upto 2.30PM in Captain TV.
Almost in tears to see a simple man so energetic, so active, so happy.. little did he realise that he would leave to heaven soon.

Murali sir said to his son "விஜயகாந்த் என் அண்ணன் பா.. அவர பத்தி எதாவது சொல்லு "

Atharva(Murali's son) said: "I know Captain sir right from when i was a kid. On the day of Baana Kaathadi Pooja, the first person to wish me was Captain sir. He spoke to me for 20minutes over phone and was showering valuable advises on me. I like him and his words are so encouraging"

Yesterday(vinayagar chaturthi) i had chance to watch few parts of a program in Captain TV titled "விஜயகாந்த் என்கின்ற நான் part2".
Captain was interviewed by Dilip.
I was able to gather the following information in few minutes i watched the program:

* Rawther films is Captains own production company

* It was Captains Rawther films that introduced the concept of serving food for everyone in the film set, on வாழை இலை.
Before that everyone used to be provided food in பொட்டலம் (limited food). This idea was Captains brain child and is now followed in all film sets. Captain feels very proud about this.

* Captain was asked a question about whether he approaches "big" directors for a combo. Captain replied that He never approached big directors for doing a movie together. Even the few "somewhat big" directors who directed Captain.....happened by chance...இயல்பாகவே அமைந்தது

* Captain is a die hard fan of MGR. (as we all know). He was quoted saying :"நேற்றும் இன்றும் நாளையும் .. என்றும் நான் ரசிப்பது MGR"

One thing i notice in Captains interview is that he deviates a lot from his talks.
Of course there was lots of political questions too... i dont want to post Captains answers here..though it was a நெத்தி அடி :thumbsup:

p.s. i wasnt able to watch the whole programme because i was pestered here to tune in to nadodigal that was telecasted in bun tv.

I too watched murali's program....
Very emotional after what had happened to him... :cry:
He expressed few of his desires which are not going to happen at all now....

though VK uses MGR name in political arena... i haven't seen him doing so in his films. But, previously i have posted about "madras vathiyar" -- he wears a round neck (?) banian, MGR's face printed on that.

This week i saw the titles of "madhurai sooran", an early 80's film. They show VK standing in front of different MGR film posters & each title will give a good positive meaning. Other than this i haven't seen him doing like ramarajan / sathyaraj / baghyaraj.

Also, in Zee cinema, I saw a couple of scenes from Andha Kanoon (not sure about the spelling).. hindi remake of "Sattam oru iruttarai", where in hindi Rajini played Vijayakanth's role. Saw one of the important scene (tape recorder scene).. those who have seen the film might know this.

it has been long time since I saw this film.. previously I remember seeing S O I in sun movies channel, again its the previous version of K TV which was there some 15 yrs ago

Most of the time, I won't see films at a stretch in a single sitting, If it is in satellite channels.. Watching it in DVD / cinema hall is different.

So, I thought of refreshing "Thavasi" intro scene & also wanted to see "yEle imayamalai" song & in between the song, VK will show his silambam skills. To my disapointment & anger, Sun Tv showed his intro in a simpler way & deleted the song & this has the titles of all other artistes. Suddenly they were showing director's name & carried on with the rest of the film & i m not interested to see after that, as I had another appointment with Captain TV at the same time :)

I have already posted about this.. But still it is ok to post again. There is a trend setting up in tamil cinema. Realistic cinema is the one which has dialogues added with the word "*tha".. So casually
(but muted by the censor). I've never seen Vijayakanth uttering these kind of words even at the height of his angriness.

As a fan, I liked the interview.. But it is not full.. They touched various subjects like family, cinema, politics in a short span.

Few points to post:

* The character he likes to play -- Raththakanneer MR Radha's role. Those who are thinking that whether it will suit him or not, watch NanE Raaja NanE Mandhiri

* When asked about how he is going to choose his upcoming films & characters, he said that he reduced acting in films, so he can't say about his next project

* Y suddenly direction? -- he told, it is almost 2 years from the day Virudhagiri poojai happened. Since he needs to concentrate on bi-elections, he was not able to start the work then. So, he asked LK Sudheesh to carry on with this project with different director. But he refused & told, it was advertised with ur (VK's) name.. if it is possible, u do it.. else let us drop this project. Then VK told that, "evvalavO pannittOm.. idhai panna mattOma" kind of reply for his directorial venture.

* His fav actor -- nEtru-inRu-naaLai ~ anRum-inRum-enRum ~ MGR

* He narrated a couple of incidents regarding his passion for MGR films & his bonding with Janaki MGR

* Though he hasn't told the exact class upto which he studied.. He told that school padippu mudinjadhum rice mill'la nirvagam panna vandutten.. So he is not a school drop out

* When he was acting in a film after Agal viLakku, he was stopped from taking lunch.. Just because heroine arrived at the sets. This wounded him. As a result when he started his production company (Ravuthar films).. Yes he told it as his company… he was the first one / producer to serve the same menu to all the artistes & technicians irrespective of their star value.. veg or non-veg, it doesn't matter [ this was said by him & i m posting as such]

* They showed the gemini lab where virudhagiri editing is going on.. & it is almost in the finishing stages

* When he was searching for acting chance, producers rejected him saying.. "adhuthan karuppa innoruthar irukkare.. Nee edhukku"

Anna i spent time upto 12 midnight searching every site that uploads tv shows but couldnt find a site that uploads "Captain TV" shows. I found that there has been requests from several users to upload Captain tv shows. It was while i was searching for the tv videos that i stumbled upon the movies i listed earlier :)

Many may know that Captain owns MGR's car that was gifted by Janaki MGR!

Saw few stills in the pc at the background ... they were nice!
One more thing to notice there na. Captain introduces the dialogue writer, editor and associate director in that part. None of them are familiar faces or popular persons!!!!!

சினிமாவில் நுழைந்தது எப்படி ?
மதுரைல சேனாஸ் சினிமா கம்பெனி வச்சிருந்த மர்சூக் & எம்.ஏ.காஜா, இந்த 2 பேரும் தான் கேப்டனின் சினிமா வாழ்க்கைக்கு அடித்தளம் போட்டவர்கள். பின்பு எஸ்.ஏ சந்திரசேகர் இவர் வாழ்க்கையில் மிகவும் முக்கியமானவர். அதனால் தான் இன்னமும் தான் அர்ச்சனை செய்யும் போது சந்திரசேகர் பெயருக்கும் சேர்த்தே அர்ச்சனை செய்து வருகிறார். இன்னொருவர் இவரது நண்பர் அ.செ. இப்றாஹீம் ராவுத்தர், பால்ய பருவத்திலிருந்தே நண்பர்களாக உள்ளனர். அதனால் தான் வேறு மொழிப்படங்களை ஒத்துக்கொள்ளாதவர் இவருக்காக ’மே டே’ என்ற ஆங்கிலப்படத்திற்கு பூஜை போட்டார்., அதுவும் வெளிவரவில்லையாம்.

தமிழ் சினிமாவின் முதல் 3-டி படமான அன்னைபூமி யின் ஹீரோ சாத்சாத் விஜயகாந்தே.! 1984-ம் வருடம் பதினெட்டு படங்களில் நடித்து உச்சத்தில் இருந்தார். அதில் சில... சுந்தர்ராஜன் இயக்கத்தில் வைதேகி காத்திருந்தாள், மணிவண்ணன் இயக்கத்தில் நூறாவது நாள் மற்றும் ஆபாவாணன் இயக்கிய உரிமைக்குரல். என நடிப்பில் பல பரிணாமங்களை காட்டிய ஆண்டு அது. அந்த ஆண்டே கலைஞர் கையால் ஷீல்டு வாங்கினார்., அன்றிலிருந்து கலைப்புலி தாணுவால் புரட்சி கலைஞர் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டார். அதுவே இன்று உலகம் முழுவதுமுள்ள ரசிகர்களால் அறியப்படுகிறது...

எம்.ஜி.ஆரும் கறுப்பு எம்.ஜி.ஆரும்
விஜயகாந்துக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த நடிகர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ஆனால் அவரால் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் கூட சேர்ந்து ஒரு புகைப்படம் கூட எடுத்துக்கொள்ள முடியவில்லை. ஏனோ?? திமுக பக்கம் ஓவரா சாய்ந்ததாலோ என்னவோ? தெரியல..

ஆனால் வி.என்.ஜான்கி அம்மையாரோடு நல்லா பழகியவர் கேப்டன். தன் பிறந்த நாளுக்கு வருஷா வர்ஷம் 50ஆயிரம் ரூபாய் ராமாவரம் காது கேளாதோர் பள்ளிக்கு நன்கொடையாக கொடுத்து வர்றார். அந்த மதிப்பின் காரணமா தான் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பயன்படுதிய பிரச்சார வேனை அன்பளிப்பா கொடுத்தாங்கலாம்.

கேப்டனும் பிரபாகரனும்

விஜயகாந்தும் தலைவர் பிரபாகரன் மீது பற்று கொண்டவரே. அதனால தான் ஈழத்தமிழர்கள் இன்னல் தீரும்வரை தான் பிறந்த நாளே கொண்டாட போவதில்லை என்று கூறியவர். மேலும் 60 பேர் தாயகம் திரும்ப பல உதவிகளை செய்தவர்.

பலர் எதிர்த்த போதும் தன்னுடைய 100வது படத்துக்கு ’கேப்டன் பிரபாகரன்’ என்று பெயரிட்டவர். தன்னுடைய மகனுக்கும் கூட அப்பெயரே வைத்தார். இப்படி இருந்தவர் டெல்லி சென்று திரும்பிய பின் பேச்சு மூச்சே இல்லாமல் போய்விட்டார்.. என்னுடைய வருத்தமும் அது தான். அவரும் சேர்ந்து 2009 நாடாளுமன்ற தேர்தலில் காங்கிரஸுக்கு எதிராக போர்க்கொடி தூக்கியிருந்தால் இன்னும் அடிவாங்கியிருக்கும் காங்கிரஸ்...

விஜயகாந்த் - தேமுதிக வின் தலைவர் ஆனார் செப்டம்பர் 24, 2005 இல். அன்று முதல் ஓயாத உழைப்பு., அரசியல் இடையில் சினிமா (சூட்டிங்) என்று சுழன்று கொண்டே இருக்கிறார். இடையில் எத்தனை சாதனைகள், சறுக்கல்கள்.. அவரது வாழ்க்கை போன்றே. எதற்கும் அஞ்சாதவர் அவர். முதல் தேர்தலிலேயே 8.2 % பெற்று 43 தொகுதிகளில் அதிமுகவின் வெற்றியை பாதித்தார்.

இப்புத்தகம் விஜயகாந்த்தின் அரசியல் வாழ்க்கையை முழுமையாக கவர் செய்யவில்லை. எந்த ஒரு வாழ்க்கை வரலாறு புத்தகமும் அவர்களின் சுயசரிதையாக இருந்தால் மட்டுமே அனைத்து தகவல்களும் இடம்பெறும் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கலாம். ஆதலால் இந்த புத்தகம் நிச்சயமாக வாசகர்கள் அனைவரின் அலமாரியிலும் இருக்க வேண்டிய வருங்கால முதல்வரின் வாழ்க்கை குறிப்பு...

After discussing about songs from Vijayakanth films.. I had a thought..

Leaving Kamal, Rajini & Mohan...

who among Vijayakanth, Prabhu, Karthik & Sathyaraj got good songs consistently from the MD's..

I guess it shud be Vijayakanth.. right :P

(or) all 4 had more or less same level of hits

Songs were never the USP for VK films, even though he got some excellent numbers from IR. Songs from non-IR movies were mostly so-so (excepting rare cases as oomai vizhigaL) and far short of other IR songs during VK's prime-period (when even the likes of Ramarajan had phenomenal numbers.)

Prabhu / Karthik had much better scores from IR, IMO. However, their non-IR movies were a mixed bag.

Sathyaraj does not come into this category at all - he mostly had rank bad music / songs - especially non-IR.

Some IR movies were noteworthy, however, with Fazil / BR / Manivannan.

I always had a doubt about the kadhai kaLam of "sathriyan" .. is it in chennai or any south district, pbly Tuticorin, villain Arumainayagam is called as Annachi
But there was a fight in running train < I guess its a local passenger train & it shud be in Chennai>

In last week's interview, Vijayakanth told that, Sathriyan shooting was held in Rameswaram.. might be the climax where they shot in a sea shore & he mentioned this for political reasons .. so not going to reveal this
