அன்று பிற்பகல், தயாரிப்பாளர் சேதுராமன் என்னிடம் வந்தார். பட அதிபர் ஜீவி என்னைப் பார்க்க விரும்புவதாகவும், கார் அனுப்பியிருப்பதாகவும் கூறினார்.

ஜீவி ஏராளமான படங்கள் பண்ணிக் கொண்டிருந்த நேரம் அது. அவரைப் போய் சந்தித்தேன்.

"நாம் ஒரு படம் பண்ணலாம். என்ன சம்பளம் எதிர்பார்க்கிறீர்கள்?'' என்று கேட்டார்.

"புலன் விசாரணை''க்கு என் சம்பளம் 14 ஆயிரம்தான். அதைச் சொன்னேன். "நீங்களே சொல்லுங்க'' என்றேன்.

"பத்து லட்சம்'' என்றார், ஜீவி! சொன்னால் நம்பமாட்டீர்கள். அப்போது, பத்து லட்சத்துக்கு எத்தனை பூஜ்யம் என்று யாராவது கேட்டால்கூட எனக்கு சொல்லத் தெரியாது. ஜீவி சொன்னதைக் கேட்டு திகைத்துப் போனேன்.

"டைரக்ஷனுக்குத்தான் இந்த 10 லட்சம். கதை உரிமை, `டப்பிங்' உரிமை ஆகியவற்றுக்கு எவ்வளவு வேண்டும்?'' என்று கேட்டு, மறுபடியும் என்னைத் திகைப்பில் ஆழ்த்தினார், "ஜீவி.''

"நீங்களே சொல்லுங்கள்'' என்றேன்.

"தெலுங்கில் "டப்'' செய்வதற்கு ரூ.30 லட்சம் கொடுப்பார்கள். அதில் ஆளுக்கு பாதி எடுத்துக்கொள்வோம். ஆக, சம்பளம் 10 லட்சத்துடன் இந்த 15 லட்சத்தை சேர்த்தால் உங்களுக்கு 25 லட்சம் கிடைக்கும். `ஓகே'தானே?'' என்று கேட்டார், ஜீவி. எனக்கு தலை

கிறுகிறுத்தது.ரூ.25 லட்சம் என்று முடிவு செய்து, அட்வான்ஸ் ஆக ஒரு பெரிய தொகைக்கு `செக்' கொடுத்தார்கள். மறுநாளே கதை விவாதத்தை தொடங்குவது என்று தீர்மானிக்கப்பட்டது.

"புலன் விசாரணை'' வெளியானபின், ராவுத்தரை நான் போய் பார்க்கவில்லை.

நான் வருவேன் என்று எதிர்பார்த்த ராவுத்தர், நான் வராததால் வீட்டுக்கு ஆள் அனுப்பினார். முதலில் ஆட்டோ வந்தது, பிறகு மாருதி ஜிப்ஸி வந்தது, அப்புறம் கம்பெனியின் அம்பாசிடர் கார் வந்தது.

சரியென்று போனேன். ராவுத்தரைப் பார்த்தேன். சந்தோஷமாக இருந்தார். பல திரையரங்குகளின் வசூல் நிலவரம் கூறினார். நாங்களும் பல இடங்களுக்குக் காரில் போய் பார்த்து வந்தோம்.

நான்காவது நாள். "படம் நல்லா போகுதுப்பா. அடுத்த படம் அண்ணனை (விஜயகாந்த்) வச்சு பண்ணலாம். எப்ப பண்ணப்போறே?'' என்று கேட்டார். மறுக்கத் தோன்றாமல், "எப்போதும் நான் தயார்'' என்றேன்.

வீடு திரும்பும்போதே யோசித்தேன். `ஜீவி 25 லட்சம் தருவதாக கூறியிருக்கிறார். ராவுத்தர் ரூ.25 ஆயிரத்துக்கு மேல் தரமாட்டார்! என்ன செய்யலாம்?' என்ற கேள்வி என்னுள் எழுந்தது. ஆனால், உடனடியாகவே நான் ஓர் முடிவுக்கு வந்தேன்.

"புலன் விசாரணை'' வருவதற்கு முன், நான் சாதாரண திரைப்படக் கல்லூரி மாணவன். ஒரு உதவி இயக்குனர். உதவி இயக்குனர் பதவி எந்தக் காலத்திலும் யாராலும் மரியாதைக்கு உரியதாகப் பார்க்கப்பட்டதில்லை. படப்பிடிப்பின்போது ஓர் எடுபிடியைப் போலவே மதிக்கப்படுவார்கள்.அப்படி இருந்த என்னை, ஓர் இயக்குனராக்கியது ராவுத்தர்தான். அதுவும் ஒரு பிரமாண்ட பட வாய்ப்பைக் கொடுத்து என்னைப் பெரிய அளவில் பேச வைத்திருக்கிறார். அப்படிப்பட்டவர் மறுபடியும் என்னை அழைக்கிறார். அதை மறுக்கக்கூடாது என்று முடிவு செய்தேன்.

எனக்குப் பணம் முக்கியமானதாகத் தெரியவில்லை. என் அப்பாவுக்கும் அப்போது சம்பளம் கவுரவமான அளவுக்கு உயர்ந்திருந்தது. வீட்டில் யாரும் என் வருமானத்தை நம்பியிருக்க வில்லை. எனவே, 25 லட்சமா 25 ஆயிரமா என்று கேள்வி வந்தபோது லட்சத்துக்கும், ஆயிரத்துக்குமான நூறு மடங்கு வித்தியாசம் இருப்பது எனக்கு பெரிதாகத் தோன்றவில்லை. விசுவாசமே பெரிதாகத் தோன்றியது.

ராவுத்தருக்கே படம் பண்ணுவது என்று உறுதியாக முடிவெடுத்தேன். இதை அறிந்த என் உதவியாளர்கள், கோபப்பட்டனர்; வருத்தப்பட்டனர். `பரவாயில்லை' என்று அவர்களைச் சமாதானப்படுத்தினேன். "பார்த்துக் கொள்ளலாம், அடுத்த படத்தில்'' என்று சொன்னேன்.

என்னை சினிமாவுக்குள் நுழைய வைத்தவர் ராவுத்தர். எனக்கு ராவுத்தர் அப்பா என்றால் விஜயகாந்த் அம்மா என்று சொல்வேன். இது இன்றைக்கும் நான் ஒப்புக்கொள்ளும் உண்மை. எனவே அந்தப் பண வருமானம் பற்றி எனக்குத் துளிக்கூட வருத்தமில்லை.

அட்வான்ஸ் பணம் வாபஸ்

ஜீவியின் படத்தை இயக்க முடியாத என் சூழ்நிலையை எடுத்துக்கூறி, அட்வான்ஸ் பணத்தை திருப்பித் தருவதாக அவருக்கு தெரிவித்தேன்.

"புலன் விசாரணை'' படத்தில் ஆட்டோ சங்கர் விஷயத்தை வைத்ததுபோல, அடுத்த படத்திலும் ஏதாவது ஒரு உண்மைச் சம்பவத்தை எடுத்துக் கொள்வது என்று முடிவு செய்தோம். சந்தனக்கடத்தல் வீரப்பன் கதையை படத்தில் சேர்த்தோம். அந்தப் படம்தான் "கேப்டன்பிரபாகரன்.''"கேப்டன் பிரபாகரன்'' ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டது. வெற்றிகரமான படக்குழு என் கைக்கு வந்துவிட்ட உணர்வு ஏற்பட்டது.

கேப்டன் பிரபாகரன் படப்பிடிப்பு part 3

100-வது படம்

விஜயகாந்த் சாருக்கு இது 100-வது படம். பொதுவாக, எல்லோருடைய 100-வது படமும் பெரிதாக எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும்; ஆனால் சரியாக அமையாது. தன் 100-வது படம் இந்த வகையில் சேரக்கூடாது, நிச்சயமாக வெற்றி பெறவேண்டும் என்று விஜயகாந்த் கருதினார்.

என்னுடன் ரொம்பவே நெருக்கமாகிவிட்டார். எங்களுக்குள் நல்ல புரிதல் வந்துவிட்டது. கதைகூட கேட்கவில்லை. `ராவுத்தர் சொன்னால் போதும்' என்று கூறிவிட்டார்.

படத்துக்காக கடுமையாக உழைத்தார். எப்படிப்பட்ட அபாயகரமான காட்சியென்றாலும் சற்றும் தயங்காமல் இறங்கிவிடுவார். சாலக்குடியில் 60 நாட்கள் படப்பிடிப்பு நடத்தினோம். ஆள் நடமாட்டமே இல்லாத பகுதியில் எந்த ஆபத்தைப் பற்றியும் கவலைப்படாமல் துணிவாக நின்றார். படத்துக்கு 110 நாட்கள் படப்பிடிப்பு நடத்தினோம்.

1000 துணை நடிகர்கள், 50 குதிரைகள், 40 லாரிகள் பங்கு கொண்ட காட்சிகளை எடுத்தோம்.

கேப்டன் பிரபாகரன் படப்பிடிப்பு part 4

ஹீரோ விஜயகாந்த், ஆற்றைக் கடக்கிற மாதிரி ஒரு காட்சி. இரண்டு மலைகளுக்கு இடையில் கீழே ஒரு கயிறு, மேலே ஒரு கயிறு, நடுவில் அவர்! அதாவது ஒரு கயிறு அவர் கையில்; இன்னொன்று காலில்! கூட வந்த ஐந்து பேர்கள் கயிற்றில் கால் வைக்க, மேல் கயிற்றுக்கும், கீழ் கயிற்றுக்கும் இடைவெளி அதிகமாகி, கை இழுபட்டு அவரால் தொங்க முடியவில்லை. அவருக்கு, தோள்பட்டை இறங்கும் பிரச்சினை வேறு இருந்தது. மிகவும் சிரமம் அவருக்கு. இருந்தாலும் எதையும் அவர் பொருட்படுத்தவில்லை.

அதுமட்டுமல்ல. அவர் வீரப்பன் இருக்கும் இடத்துக்கு வரும் காட்சியை ஆறு, மலை, அருவி போன்று பலவற்றைக் கடந்து வருவதுபோல் படமாக்கினோம். இதற்கே பல ஆயிரம் அடிகள் எடுக்க வேண்டி இருந்தது. அதுவே பெரிய சாகசம்.

பெரிய ஹீரோ என்ற பந்தா இல்லாமல் எல்லோருடனும் அன்பாகப் பழகினார், விஜயகாந்த்.

இருப்பதைச் சாப்பிட்டு, கிடைத்த இடத்தில் தூங்கினார். சாப்பாடு பரிமாற ஆட்கள் இல்லையென்றால், அவரே எடுத்துப்போட்டு சாப்பிடுவார். மற்றவர்களுக்கும் பரிமாறுவார்!

அவருக்கும் எனக்கும் நல்ல புரிதல் வந்துவிட்டதால், யார் கூறும் புகாரும் அவரிடம் எடுபடாது. படப்பிடிப்பு எந்த பிரச்சினையும் இல்லாமல் போயிற்று.

மிகவும் சிரமம் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, இரவு - பகலாகப் படப்பிடிப்பு நடத்தி, படத்தை முடித்தோம்.

சின்னக்கவுண்டர்


ஒரு திரைப்படத்தின் வெற்றி என்பது வசூல் சாதனை மட்டும் அன்றி ரசிகர்கள் தவிர்த்து மற்றவர்களுக்கும் எந்த அளவுக்கு படம் பிடித்திருக்கிறது என்பதில் அடங்கி உள்ளது. இன்றைக்கு கோடிகளில் வசூலை வாரி குவிப்பதாக விளம்பரப்படுத்தப்படும் படங்களை இரண்டாம் முறையும் பார்க்கவேண்டும் என்று மக்களை எண்ண வைக்கும் படங்கள் எத்தனை? முதல் முறை பார்த்ததையே பண விரையம், கால விரையம், பதிவிறக்க மெகா பைட் விரையம் என்று எண்ணும் அளவுக்குத்தான் உள்ளது. இம்மாதிரியான காலகட்டத்தில் இருபது ஆண்டுகள் தாண்டியும் மக்கள் ரசிக்கும் ஒரு படம் என்றால் அது சின்னக்கவுண்டர் தான்.

24 ஆயிரம் அடி

எடிட் செய்தபின், படம் 24 ஆயிரம் அடி நீளம் இருந்தது.

பொதுவாக ஒரு படத்தின் நீளம் 14 ஆயிரம் அடி. அதிகமாகப் போனால், 16 ஆயிரம் அடி இருக்கலாம். இது கூடுதலாக 8 ஆயிரம் அடி இருந்தது. அதாவது, ஒரு படத்தின் பாதி பாகம்! ஒரு படத்துக்கு முக்கியம் நீளமா? அல்லது எடுக்கப்பட்ட காட்சிகளா?

நல்ல காட்சிகள் எல்லாம் இருக்க வேண்டியது அவசியம் என்றாலும், மொத்த நீளம் 14 ஆயிரம் அடிதான் இருக்க வேண்டும்.

இதனால், மிகவும் சிரமப்பட்டு நீளத்தைக் குறைத்தேன். விஜயகாந்த் சார் ரத்தம் சிந்தி நடித்த பல காட்சிகளை இரக்கம் இன்றி வெட்டி எறிய நேரிட்டது. அப்போது என் மனம் பட்ட பாட்டை விவரிக்க முடியாது. அவ்வளவு மனச் சங்கடத்துடன் என் கடமையைச் செய்தேன்.

லட்சம் லட்சமாகச் செலவு செய்து எடுத்த காட்சிகள் வெட்டப்படுவது ராவுத்தருக்கு தெரிந்தது. அவர் கோபமாக, "என்னடா படம் எடுத்திருக்கே! ஒரு தயாரிப்பாளரை காலி பண்ணிட்டியே!'' என்றார்.

ராவுத்தரின் குணம் எனக்குத் தெரியும். எப்போது திட்டுவார் என்பதை கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியாது. அவசரப்பட்டு பேசிவிடுவார். பிறகு வருத்தப்படுவார். உணர்ச்சிவசப்படுபவர். எதிர்பார்க்கிற நேரத்தில் பேசமாட்டார்.

அவர் இப்படி சொன்னதும் எனக்கு அதிர்ச்சியாகத் தெரியவில்லை. காட்சிகளை எடிட் செய்து, படத்தை ரிலீசுக்கு தயார் செய்தேன்.



விஜயகாந்த் மகிழ்ச்சி

படத்தைப் போட்டுக்காட்டியபோது, விஜயகாந்த் சாருக்கு திருப்தி. "சரிபண்ணிட்டியே... நல்லா இருக்கு!'' என்றவர், "ஆமாம், நான் கஷ்டப்பட்டு கையில் ரத்தம் வர நடிச்ச காட்சியெல்லாம் காணோமே! அந்த காயத்தோட வடு கூட இன்னமும் அப்படியே இருக்குப்பா!'' என்றார், சிரித்தபடி!

படம் அவருக்குப் பிடித்துவிட்டது. அதுபோதும் எனக்கு.

ஆனால் ராவுத்தரோ திருப்திப் படவில்லை. "படம் நல்லா இல்லேப்பா!'' என்றார். அவர் மனம் மாறும் என்ற நம்பிக்கை எனக்கு இருந்தது.

வெற்றிக்கொடிபடம் வெளியானது. திரையிடப்பட்ட இடங்களில் எல்லாம் பிரமாதமான வெற்றி.

அப்போது, தமிழ்நாடு, ஆந்திரா, கேரளா, கர்நாடகா என்று எல்லா இடங்களிலும் 100 நாள் ஓடிய ஒரே படம் இதுதான்.

படம் இந்தியிலும் `டப்' செய்யப்பட்டு வெளியானது.

இந்த சமயத்தில் ஒரு சோதனை. படம் ஏப்ரல் 14-ல் வெளியானது. மே 21-ல் ராஜீவ் காந்தி படுகொலை செய்யப்பட்டார். அதனால் தியேட்டர்கள் தாக்கப்பட்டன. அடிதடிகள் நடந்தன.

இரண்டுநாள் இப்படிக் கலவரமாக இருந்தது. பிறகு படம் வசூலில் அள்ளியது.

எந்தக் கதாநாயகனையும், 100-வது படம் ஏமாற்றிவிடும். தன் படம் மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றிப்படமாக அமைந்ததில் விஜயகாந்த் மிகவும் சந்தோஷமாக இருந்தார்.

அந்த நேரம் அவருக்கு கல்யாண ஏற்பாடு நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. அப்போது வெற்றிப்படம் வெளிவந்ததில் அவருக்கு ஏக மகிழ்ச்சி. அதை என்னிடம் வெளிப்படையாகச் சொன்னார். "என் நூறாவது படம் பற்றி கவலையாக இருந்தது. அதையும் வெற்றிப்படமாக கொடுத்துவிட்டாய். எனக்கு திருமணப் பரிசு மாதிரியும் படம் அமைந்துவிட்டது. ரொம்ப சந்தோஷம்ப்பா!'' என்று பாராட்டினார்.

"படமா எடுத்திருக்கே?'' என்று முன்பு கேட்ட ராவுத்தர், படம் வெற்றிப்பாதையில் போக ஆரம்பித்ததும், "என்னை இந்தியாவிலேயே பெரிய தயாரிப்பாளர் ஆக்கிட்டே தம்பி. ரொம்ப சந்தோஷம்!'' என்றார். இதற்குத்தான் நான் எதிர்பார்த்து காத்திருந்தேன். இவர் இப்படிச் சொல்வார் என்று நான் கொண்டிருந்த நம்பிக்கை நிஜமாயிற்று.

கருணாநிதி தலைமையில் விஜயகாந்த் திருமணம் (31-1-1990)

முதல்-அமைச்சர் கருணாநிதி தலைமையில், நடிகர் விஜயகாந்த் திருமணம் மதுரையில் நடந்தது.

கலைஞர் தலைமையில் திருமணம் நடைபெறவேண்டும் என்று விஜயகாந்த் விரும்பியதை, செயல்படுத்திக் காட்டியவர், கலைப்புலி தாணு.

தெருப்பாடகன்'' படம் தொடங்கிய நேரத்தில் விஜயகாந்த் என்னிடம், "ஊரில் எனக்கு பெண் பார்த்து அக்கா முடிவு செய்திருக்கிறார்கள்'' என்றார். வாழ்த்து தெரிவித்தேன்.

"எனது திருமணம் மதுரையில் நடக்கிறது. கலைஞர் தலைமை தாங்கி நடத்தித் தரவேண்டும் என்று விரும்புகிறேன். நீங்கள்தான் கலைஞர் சம்மதத்தைப் பெறவேண்டும்'' என்றார்.

அன்று மதியமே கலைஞரைப் பார்க்க புறப்பட்டேன். முதல்வர் கலைஞர் அப்போது பைல் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அருகில் ஐ.ஏ.எஸ். அதிகாரி சுந்தரம் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார்.

என்னைப் பார்த்தவர், "வாய்யா! என்ன இந்த நேரத்தில்?'' என்று கேட்டார்.

"பைல் பார்க்கறீங்க. வேணும்னா அப்புறம் வந்து பார்க்கிறேன்'' என்றேன்.

அவரோ, "முதல்-அமைச்சர்ன்னா எப்பவும் வேலை இருக்கத்தான் செய்யும்'' என்றார்.

பைல் விஷயமாக ஐ.ஏ.எஸ். அதிகாரிக்கு சில உத்தரவுகளை பிறப்பித்து அனுப்பியவர், "இப்ப சொல்லுய்யா'' என்றார்.

விஜயகாந்திடம் கலைஞர் அவரது படங்கள் பற்றி பேசினார். பிறகு எந்த தேதி வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டார். விஜயகாந்த் 3 தேதிகளை சொல்லியதில் ஒரு தேதியை கலைஞர் உறுதி செய்தார். மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் விஜயகாந்த் விடைபெற்றார்.

வெளியே வந்து காரில் ஏறப்போன சமயத்தில் ராவுத்தர், "அண்ணே! மூப்பனாரை கூப்பிடறது பற்றி தலைவரிடம் கேட்காமல் இருந்துட்டோமே'' என்று பதறினார்.

நான் மறுபடியும் கலைஞர் இருந்த மாடி அறைக்கு ஓடினேன். போன வேகத்தில் திரும்பி வந்ததை பார்த்த கலைஞர்

"என்னய்யா? வேறு ஏதாவது விஷயமா?'' என்றார்.

"திருமணத்துக்கு காங்கிரஸ் தலைவர் மூப்பனாரையும் அழைக்கலாமா என்று கேட்கிறார்கள்'' என்றேன்.

"நான் விரும்பும் தலைவர்களில் மூப்பனாரும் ஒருவர். கண்டிப்பாக அழைக்கச் சொல்'' என்றார்.

கலைஞர் சொன்னதை வெளியில் நின்று கொண்டிருந்த விஜயகாந்திடம் சொன்னபோது, அவரது முகத்தில் அப்படியொரு மகிழ்ச்சி.

மதுரை ராஜா முத்தையா ஹாலில் 1990 ஜனவரி 31-ந்தேதி கலைஞர் தலைமையில், மூப்பனார் முன்னிலையில் விஜயகாந்த் திருமணம் சீரும் சிறப்புமாக நடந்தது.

Will Vijay make it in Telugu, finally?
Tamil superstar Vijay promised to become big with Shankar's Snehithudu earlier this year. Since it was an unabashed frame-to-frame, expression-to-expression copy of 3 Idiots, it was strongly rejected by the audience.
Later this year, AR Murugadoss' Thupakki (as yet not titled in Telugu) will hit the screens in November. The question is, will he make it this time, finally? Will he be another Suriya, Karthi, Jiiva?
It is curios that the reigning stars of Kollywood (namely, Vijay and Ajith) have no base in Andhra Pradesh. In sharp contrast, Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan, the superstars of last generation, are household names in the Telugu land. To an extent, Vijaykanth's popularity during his time was more than Vijay's fame today.
According to the director, it's been quite long since "we saw such an energetic and handsome hero in our Tamil cinema." So unlike normal heroes, Murugados added, here in 'Thuppaki' Vijay is playing it very differently, by being very bubbly, enthusiastic and excited. "Usually female leads in my films play such energetic characters, but in this movie, Vijay takes upon himself to play a lively and hyper-active character. I feel that this will be Vijay's best role so far in his career," remarked the director.
It is to be seen if Thupakki proves to be a game-changer.

"காலியா'' இந்திப்படத்தை தமிழில் எடுங்கள். நன்றாகப்போகும்'' என்றார். படத்தில் அமிதாப் கேரக்டரில் விஜயகாந்த் நடித்தால் சரியாக இருக்கும். பிரான் கேரக்டரில் ஜெய்சங்கரை நடிக்க வையுங்கள்'' என்றார்.

நடிகை ரூபினி இந்தப்படத்தில்தான் முதன் முதலாக கதாநாயகியாக அறிமுகம் ஆனார். படத்தை ராஜசேகர் இயக்கினார். டி.ராஜேந்தர் இசையமைத்தார்.

"கூலிக்காரன்'' படத்துக்கு சென்னை மவுண்ட்ரோடு தேவி தியேட்டரில் விஜயகாந்துக்கு சிலை அமைத்தோம். தியேட்டரின் முன்பாக உண்மையான கட்டை வண்டியையே வைத்தோம். படம் பார்க்க வந்த ரசிகர்கள் இந்த விளம்பர உத்தியை பார்க்க கூட்டமாக வந்தார்கள். அப்படி வந்தவர்கள் படத்தையும் தொடர்ந்து `ஹவுஸ்புல்' ஆக்கினார்கள்.

நூறாவது நாள் விழா

இந்தப் படத்தின் நூறாவது நாள் விழாவில் கலைஞர் கலந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று விரும்பினேன். "கூலிக்காரன்'' வெற்றி விழாவையும், "நல்லவன்'' பட தொடக்க விழாவையும் ஒரே சமயத்தில் நடத்த திட்டமிட்டேன். நான் கலைஞர் மீது அலாதியான அன்பு வைத்திருந்தேன். "கலைஞர் தாசன்'' என்றுகூட என்னை சொல்லலாம். அத்தனை ஈர்ப்பு இருந்ததால் கலைஞரை சந்திக்க முயற்சி மேற்கொண்டேன்.

அப்போது ஆலிவர் ரோட்டில் உள்ள வீடு கட்டும் வேலை நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. வீட்டு வேலை காரணமாக கலைஞர் போக் ரோட்டு வீட்டில் தங்கியிருந்தார். எங்களுக்கு ஒரு அம்பாசிடர் கார் இருந்தது. அந்தக் காரில் கலைஞரை பார்க்க ஆலிவர் ரோடு வந்தோம். கலைஞரை சந்தித்து கூலிக்காரன் பட விழாவுக்கு தேதி கேட்டேன். "தந்தால் போயிற்று'' என்றவர் வீட்டை சுற்றிக்காட்டினார். ஒவ்வொரு அறையாக காண்பித்துக் கொண்டு வந்தவர், "இதுதான் நான் எழுதும் அறை'' என்று ஒரு அறையை காட்டியபோது அவர் முகத்தில் அப்படியொரு பிரகாசம்.

கலைஞர் அங்கிருந்து போக் ரோடு வீட்டுக்கு புறப்பட இருந்தபோது, டிரைவர் வரவில்லை. அதனால் எங்கள் காரில் ஏறிக்கொண்டார். என் அண்ணன் செல்வம் காரை ஓட்ட, அவர் அருகே கம்பீரமாக கலைஞர் அமர, நான் பின்சீட்டில் அமர்ந்து கொண்டேன். கலைஞருக்கே சாரதியாகி விட்ட சந்தோஷத்தில் மூழ்கிவிட்டார் அண்ணன்.

அப்போது முதல்வராக எம்.ஜி.ஆர். இருந்தார். கலைஞர் எதிர்க்கட்சித் தலைவர். ஆட்சியில் இல்லாத நேரத்திலும் அவர்தான் எனது பட விழாவை தலைமை தாங்கி நடத்தி வைக்க வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டபோது, என் தீவிரம் புரிந்தே தேதி கொடுத்தார்.

விஜயா வாகினி ஸ்டூடியோவில் பிரமாண்ட விழா. கூட்டம் நிரம்பி வழிந்தது. விழாவுக்கு கலைஞர் வந்த நேரத்தில் அவரை சந்திக்க பல அரசியல் பிரமுகர்களும் வந்தார்கள். விழாவில் பேசும்போது இதைக் குறிப்பிட்ட கலைஞர், "இந்த விழாவில் `காணாத' முகங்களை எல்லாம் காண்கிறேன். குளிர்ந்த காற்று வீசுவது, மழை வருவதற்கான அறிகுறி'' என்று சொல்லி ஒரு கணம் நிறுத்த, அப்போதே பலத்த கரகோஷம். உடனே கலைஞர் தனக்கே உரிய பாணியில், "நான் ஆட்சி மாற்றம் பற்றி சொல்லவில்லை. காலத்தை சொன்னேன்'' என்று `டைமிங்'காக பேச அதற்கும் பலத்த கைதட்டல்.

the first new release of Vijayakanth i remember is SATHRIYAN..
i remember the events not with year but linking with some other events.. for example the class i was studying & after that the company i was working.. from there i would back track the year / month about the event..
same way.. for SATHRIYAN.. i guess i was studying in 4th standard..
it was a diwali day & i was bursting crackers with my elder cousin at his house.. [next street from our house]..
& around 9:30 am or 10 am.. doordharsan spl. oLiyum oliyum was playing Sathriyan song.. "yaaru pOttadhu thaaru roadu than" .. the first glimpse of sathriyan for me.. & I remember another release then was Karthik's "edhir kaatru".. many might not know about this film..
after this within a year or two.. i saw Sathriyan at one of my uncle's house.. in a video casette / vcr.. along with the same cousin.. except the sea shore climax i don't remember anything from that watch..
also, i don't remember when was the next time i saw again to know the greatness of this film..
gem of a film in Captain's career..
now i have 2 copies of the film.. 1 from Raj video vision.. bought from stores.. another one is a KTV rip downloaded from some file sharing site.. a much better print this one..

next one i remember in connection to diwali is KANNUPADA POGUDHAYYA

- i think it was 1999 diwali.. & it released with Mudhalvan(?)
- i was excited for 2 things.. 1 - first & only film with Super Good Films.. those days.. a film with sgf is a guaranteed hit.. & next exciting thing is heroine Simran.. her first with captain..
- & it was a village subject & a double role for captain..
- i expected a decent run.. because he was on the verge of getting field out.. & last few films didn't even released in a decent theater in Kovai.. for eg: periyanna..
- KPP was released in KG-Ragam & this itself was a boost for me
- luckily KPP was a profitable one & it changed everything for captain.. followed by vaanathai pola..
- on diwali day.. Doordharsan was playing "mookuthi muththazhagu" song for quite a number of times

any guesses which film released & the competitors?

2 days before 2006 diwali.. i was in chennai for a personal work & planned to return same day night to kovai.. due to my negligence i've to stay there for one more day & was travelling to kovai on the eve of diwali..

when i was there in chennai i could see posters of this film wherever i went there.. then i didn't know the list of theaters in kovai.. i was hopeful to see a good list.. there were reasons for my belief..
oh.. i didn't say which film it is... ok.. not a great film it is.. the film is..

Puratchi Kalaignarin DHARMAPURI .. a Perarasu masala..

- first film for captain after becoming MLA
- Perarasu returning after tirupachi, sivakasi & thirupathi.. expected him to do a better packaging for B & C audience
- more importantly Captain joining hands with AM Ratnam for first time.. so i thought he would take care the promotional activities..

when i was returning (travel by bus) i was looking for posters at every possible town i was passing.. could not see in major towns :( .. but i can see few in village kind of areas.. my expectation lowered..
once i reached kovai in the early morning.. i bought the days newspaper (dailythanthi) & eagerly looked for Dharmapuri advt... dejected to see only B & C centre for Kovai region.. lost interest over this film... & didn't liked it when i saw in sun tv.. haven't seen it full.. & the film is a flop / disaster..
anyway.. hit or flop doesn't matter for captain..

now i've to say the competitors..
2006 was a Thala diwali then.. Varalaaru.. struck gold at box office.. i had silly arguments with Ajith fans in hub before the release.. he was without a hit for long time then
other films shared the major theaters are..

- another dual role..
- captain was back in winning ways after KPP, Vanathai pola, vallarasu & Vanchinathan..
- i was expecting a good show from captain.. but the competitors are tough this time.. ah.. everytime.. he is not the one who comes without competition.. :lol2: :wink: .. he loves competition & wins competing :mrgreen:
- got A grade theaters this time..
- 2 major competitors are .. Kamal's Aalavandhaan... & Bala's 2nd film Nandhaa..
- i'm confident that Thavasi would have been a profitable one to all those involved..

& the memories from thavasi & diwali is..
you like or hate vijayakanth.. but on 2001 diwali the most played song in tv channels is "Thanthana thanthana thai maasam".. nice to see that..

- later i read that.. ARM developed this story by having Captain in mind & he said to oscar ravi.. if captain is not doing this.. he will go for some other story with other actors..
- my most exciting moment is Isaignani's music.. he comes back to captain film after Dharma.. i think.. i liked the way ARM chose IR here.. Dheena had Yuvan..
- there was a rumor that IR & VM will come together for this film.. oscar is mediating between then..
- there were enough news during the make which made me to look forward for this..

& the hype was increased by the advt. during singapore - malaysia star nite & the young vijayakanth picture :clap:

& i'm sure oscar will do the adequate promotions.. he is more like Kalaipuli thanu in promoting his films..

- next is the diwali day experience -

- Ramanaa released in good theater... Kovai - Ganga..
- i was slightly nervous about the film result
- tougher competition... Villain - Bagavathy - Kadhal azhivadhillai... all young guns.. Captain completed 50 yrs when Ramanaa released :)
- me with my father went to our kuladheivam temple.. on diwali day.. on the way i could see some posters of Ramanaa.. liked it
- before going.. we went to one of my uncle's house.. i saw some 1/2 hr of diwali spl like scenes & songs from new releases.. i could not see anything from Ramanaa.. saw villain bus comedy..
- i'm back at home in the afternoon..
- i got the glimpse of Ramanaa... vaanam athirave was played for most part of the day..

- i think, we were in the mid of semester exams.. the next working day there was an exam.. once i went i asked one of my friend about the film.. he gave a +ve feedback... & immediately i asked about the ending :).. he told... :)

- with in one or two weeks.. i took another friend to watch the film.. loved each minute of it.. didn't mind the length of the film..

- though vaanam adhirave is most played song.. later i liked vaanaville more in the voice of sadhana sargam & Ilaiyaraaja.. again when i listened to vaanam adhirave.. it gave the festive feel.. IR :bow:

- film was shoot keeping a diwali release in mind.. this is evident in Happy diwali dialogue from captain...

- here i don't want to do a review kind of post..

- once the film ended its run in main theater.. it was released in a theater near my house.. went alone & saw again there.. may be after 4 or 5 months from release..

- i think it was 1999 diwali.. & it released with Mudhalvan(?)
- i was excited for 2 things.. 1 - first & only film with Super Good Films.. those days.. a film with sgf is a guaranteed hit.. & next exciting thing is heroine Simran.. her first with captain..
- & it was a village subject & a double role for captain..
- i expected a decent run.. because he was on the verge of getting field out.. & last few films didn't even released in a decent theater in Kovai.. for eg: periyanna..
- KPP was released in KG-Ragam & this itself was a boost for me
- luckily KPP was a profitable one & it changed everything for captain.. followed by vaanathai pola..
- on diwali day.. Doordharsan was playing "mookuthi muththazhagu" song for quite a number of times

VK’s mother mistakingly asks Visu for marriage of VK with Viji , (though VK is not interested and treats Viji as his sister), Visu is furious and their friendship breaks
Visu sets to find a suitable groom for his sister and zeros in on Mangupathy(SV Sekar), his father is Rajakalavai, mother Rushiyendramani
Rushiyendramani is greedy women and asks for dowry, silver utensils, gold ornaments which is impossible for Visu
So they come across a diary which contains all address of relatives and asks them for help

In comes Delhi ganesh but he is mistaken as Delhi DIG
Next arrives Oomai Vizhigal patti and replies that she came late because if she would have come last week she would have bought Rs100/- less
In an unexpected turn , a petty thief arrives but he gives Rs 100/- as a marriage gift
VK is a silent spectator in his home
The bride’s mother asks for a special cook Oomai Vizhigal patti chirps in
Next is series of twists and turns
Did VK help them , Did Gopalakrishnan comes and help them

The movie opens in a slum area where Dharma is hailed as God. Its more of Nayakan type and there comes an intro song which is very good . In a turn of events enter police officer , Ranjith who is a friend of VK and loves Vk’s sister Vk arranges for marriage and attends the marriage in disguise ( Iru Kangal Pothadu)
Thalaivasal Vijay , a reporter and elder brother of VK unearths a secret that Ranjith has connection with underworld kings Mansoor Ali Khan & Kasan Khan( Their character is ripped from Gang Leader villan movie). Ultimately Vijay is killed before Vk comes to know of it .Ranjith is entrusted the case
IN meantime Government changes & SS Rajendran assumes office as CM . He is keen to eliminate rowdyism & corruption even though he has come to power after 14 years and appoints special officers , Ranjith is one among them. This irriates Mansoor who plans to eliminate VK & CM . Ranjith includes VK as a most wanted Criminal and lays a trap to CM & VK , in an encounter CM is seriously injured, Vk & his men hide CM & treat him ,
What happens next is climax?



ANALYSIS:

The story is good on paper right but very poor in execution, the film has a story writer who is quite good but director who has terribly failed in screenplay if it was aptly executed it might have been like Pulan Visarnai but its one of the worst movies of VK film carrier wonder what made him accept this movie
The movie released with great expectation but was very poorly received.

It is a multi starrer featuring many stars.
The movie is directed by KR with whom VK did a hit movie Alexander

S. A. Chandrasekhar has the distinction of directing 17 of Vijayakanth’s 150 plus films. It was his 1981 hit Sattam Oru Iruttarai that propelled Vijayakanth to stardom.
Now, SAC’s grandniece Sneha Britto is on the verge of completing the remake ofSattam Oru Iruttarai. She went to meet ‘Captain’ (as Vijayakanth has been referred to after his 100 film Captain Prabhakaran), the hero of the original Sattam Oru Iruttarai, to seek his blessings.
Sneha is helming the remake, with guidance from SAC himself. Newcomer Thaman plays Vijayakanth’s role, while Bindu Madhavi, Piaa Bajpai and Reema Sen play the other important characters.
What did Captain have to say to Sneha? Says Sneha: “I had gone along with SAC to meet Vijayakanth. He went on a nostalgic trip to the days when he acted in Sattam Oru Iruttarai. He said, ‘I learnt a lot under SAC. His dedication and passion for his art has made him what he is today — a successful filmmaker. As far as Sattam Oru Iruttarai is concerned, the film took me to a higher status in the industry, after a brief lull. தேசிய முற்போக்கு திராவிட கழகத்தின் தலைவர் விஜயகாந்த் நடிக்கும் 150&வது படத்தை கேப்டன் சினிகிரியேஷன்ஸ் தயாரிக்கிறது. இந்த படத்திற்கான தொடக்க விழா செங்கல்பட்டு அருகில் உள்ள மாமண்டூர் ஆண்டாள் அழகர் என்ஜீனியரிங் கல்லூரியில் நேற்று காலை 10.45 மணிக்கு நடந்தது. விழாவை விஜயகாந்த் குத்துவிளக்கேற்றி தொடங்கிவைத்தார்.

இந்த படத்தில் சண்டைகாட்சியில் வித்தியாசம் செய்யப்பட்டு உள்ளது. பஞ்ச் டயலாக் உண்டா? இல்லையா? என்று தெரியாது. பட்டுக்கோட்டை பிரபாகர் வசனம் எழுதுகிறார். இது பெரிய பட்ஜெட் படம்.

பதில்:& போலீஸ் பயிற்சி கல்லூரி காட்சி எடுப்பதற்காகத்தான் இங்கு பூஜை நடத்தினோம். 2 நாட்கள் விடுமுறை இருப்பதால் அந்த காட்சியை எடுத்து முடித்து விடுவோம். நாளை முதல் சண்டைகாட்சி எடுக்க இருக்கிறோம். அடுத்தமாதம் 1&ந்தேதி முதல் கனடா செல்கிறேன். ஒரு மாதம் அங்குதான் இருப்பேன். இந்த படம் பொங்கலுக்கு ரிலீஸ் ஆகும்.

கேள்வி:&அரசியலில் இருந்து கொண்டே தொடர்ந்து படத்தில் நடிப்பீர்களா?, அதை தொண்டர்கள் விரும்புகிறார்களா?
பதில்:&அரசியலில் இருந்து கொண்டே தொடர்ந்து திரைப்படத்தில் நடிப்பேன். தொண்டர்களும் அரசியலோடு, நடிப்பும் வேண்டும் என்கிறார்கள்.

கேள்வி:& படத்தயாரிப்பாளர்கள் உங்களை வைத்து படம் எடுக்க பயப்படுகிறார்கள் என்று கூறப்படுகிறதே?
பதில்:& 6 தயாரிப்பாளர்கள் எங்களுக்கு படம் பண்ணிக்கொடுங்கள் என்று கேட்கிறார்கள். எனக்குத்தான் கால்ஷீட் கொடுக்க முடியவில்லை. அதேநேரம் நான் சில கண்டிஷன்களை போடுவேன். ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை நடிக்கமாட்டேன். அரசியல் செய்ய வேண்டிய நேரம் வரும்போது என்னை விட்டுவிடவேண்டும் என்பேன். இப்படிப்பட்ட பிரச்சினைகள் காரணமாகத்தான் 150&வது படத்தை நானே தயாரிக்கிறேன்.

விழாக்களுக்கு போவதில்லை
கேள்வி:&நீங்கள் நடிப்பதாக இருந்த எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படம் என்னவாயிற்று?
பதில்:&நீங்கள்தான் எழுதினீர்கள். எம்.ஜி.ஆர். என்றால் அது ஆங்கிலப்பெயர் என்பார்கள். அதை தமிழ்ப்படுத்தினால் அந்த பெயரே மாறிவிடும்.

கேள்வி:&அதிகமாக உங்களை திரைப்படவிழாக்களில் பார்க்கமுடியவில்லையே?
பதில்:& 2 முதல்&அமைச்சர்களுக்கு விழா நடத்தினேன். மற்றபடி வெளிவிழாக்களில் பொதுவாக நான் கலந்து கொள்வதில்லை. பிடித்திருந்தால் போவேன், பிடிக்காவிட்டால் போகமாட்டேன். இருப்பினும் வேலைகள் இருப்பதால் போகமாட்டேன்.

கேள்வி:& மதுரை இடைத்தேர்தலில் உங்கள் கட்சி வளர்ச்சி அடைந்ததாக கருதுகிறீர்களா?

Q: Hailing from a wealthy family, why did you enter films? Did you have to struggle to get a proper break?

A: It was an accident. We have a rice mill in Madurai and I was managing it. Seeing me moving around in a motorbike, one of the biggest distributors of that area took some stills of me and asked me whether I was interested in acting. I succumbed to the temptation and came to Madras.

Recommended by my distributor friend, I was even signed by a producer. I shot for 2 or 3 days. After a few days' break, I was shocked to see in the newspapers that another popular actor, whose name I don't want to reveal now, was doing the role I was signed for.

Infuriated, I confronted the director who, to my utter consternation, informed me that I had been dropped from the film became I could not speak Tamil properly! I was amazed because Madurai is the seat of Tamil language and culture and how could I, born and brought up there, not speak Tamil properly? I took this insult as a challenge and at that moment decided that cinema was my career.

Precisely at that time my struggle started. The distributor who created in me a love for cinema felt guilty and introduced me to M A Khaja, then a prolific director, who gave me a break in his Sudhakar-Radhika starrer 'Inikkum llamai'. It was actually a negative role and I just had a few scenes and a fight. Director Khaja also changed my original name Vijayaraj into Vijayakanth. Though a brief role, it made an impact on the audience.

Then came 'Thoorathu Idi Muzhakkam', which was delayed unduly owing to financial constraints, 'Neerottam' and 'Akal Vilakku'. All of them flopped. There was 'Samanthipoo' in which I was villain. But my career then was in such a bad shape that my name was deleted from the credit title.

Those days most of the production companies were located at Kodambakkam and the bus fare to that area from my lodge was a mere 25 paise. Even that was a big amount for me. My father refused to send me money because he was not pleased with the idea of my entering films. I used to starve, trudge to film companies. I put up with all that only because I was determined to prove my worth in this industry.

Q: Your career went through several hiccups? How did you survive them?

A: Every hero has a bad phase, but no hero would have suffered the types of humiliation I was subjected to and still survived as I did. I was written off, not once but more than 4 times, in these 2 decades.

After 4 consecutive flops, director S A Chandrashekar, impressed by my performance in 'Neerottam,' booked me for his 'Sattam Oru Iruttarai'. During the making of the film, a popular hero sent feelers to the director that he would like to act in it. Even the distributors were against me as I was not a saleable proposition.

My position was whether to swim or sink. I told Chandrashekar that his film was crucial for me and if he dropped me, that would be the last nail in my coffin. Chandrashekar had confidence in me and braving all odds went ahead and the film proved to be one of the biggest hits of the day.

Ironically, even that film did not help me. After 'Sattam Oru Iruttarai,' I did 18 films and every one of them bombed. The industry gave credit to Chandrashekar for that film's success and dismissed me totally.

While I was idling away my time stoically waiting for yet another break, it was Chandrashekar again who gave me a second lease of life in his 'Saatchi' against the distributors' warnings. 'Saatchi' went on to become a success, but again it did not help me.

'Saatchi' was followed by a string of flops and aborted productions and my jobless state continued. Around this time, R Sundarrajan came up with 'Vaidehi Kaathirundaal' which was a different type of film and its success really helped me because it was followed by many more hits.

Those days I used to work 3 shifts. One year 14 of my films were released. I met with an accident during the making of 'Kaalaiyum Neeye Maalayum Neeye'. My eyes were hurt and I had to take treatment. I was written off by the industry as rumours spread that I had lost my sight.

My close friend and associate Ibrahim Rauthar had by then floated his own production company just to promote me and his 'Uzhavan Magan' was in the making. Because of the rumours about my illhealth , the distributors stopped funding it.

To dispel the rumours, I participated in a day's shooting for the film in the presence of the entire media and industry bigwigs. That was my third difficult phase.

For a long time, my films were not big grossers, but proved safe bets at the box office. While I was doing 'Pulan Visaaranai,' I suffered another setback, but of a different type. Luckily 'Pulan Visaaranai' became a hit and I overcame the difficulty. With my 100th 'Captain Prabhaakaran' clicking in a big way, I was finally accepted by the industry.

Now I've reached a point where I can carry the entire film on my shoulder.

Q: Was it true that at one point of time in your career, many heroines refused to act with you?

A: Yes. During the making of 'Saatchi' and 'Paarvayin Maru Pakkam' almost all the heroines refused to act with me because I was a flop hero. Ironically, the same heroines acted with me later when I became a hit. I understood this industry well only during the bad phases.

Q: Is it to wreak vengeance on them that in your films now heroines are used as mere glamour dolls?

A: I am not that avenging type at all. I don't agree that in all my films the heroines are mere glamour dolls. In some films, yes, they are. But there were such films as 'Poonthotta Kaavalkaaran,' 'Chinna Gounder' and 'Amman Koil Kizhakkaale' where the heroines had equal importance. In 'En Aasai Machchaan,' the climax was completely centred on Revathi.

In my films, heroines are treated with dignity. You can never come across vulgar dance movements, embarrassingly intimate love scenes or double entendres. Only 'Pathavi Pramaanam' had an overdoze of sex and that film failed.

Q: Radhika and you made a hit pair. Did your personal rift with Radhika make any difference to your career?

A: Not at all. I have given hits with other heroines, Radha, Revathi, Sukanya and so on.

Q: You have so far not acted under noted directors except Bharathiraaja whose film with you flopped. You have not approached them even for your home productions. Instead, you prefer fresh Film Institute students. Is it because you want to dominate your directors?

A: Time was when I approached every top director, begging for a role. Now I consider all my directors as big. Most of my films have been directed by Chandrashekar, Rama Narayanan and Sundarrajan. I have struggled and come up to this level on my own. I know what it is to struggle. So in my own productions, I give opportunities to directors who are going through a lean phase.

I don't reject a director outright just because he has given a string of flops. Hits and flops are not in our hands. I prefer Film Institute students because they not only come up with fresh ideas but are flexible and receptive to our suggestions.

Q: While some of your earlier films propagated leftist ideas, your recent films and your off-screen activities suggest that you are interested in entering politics. Are you?

A: My 'Sivappu Malli' and 'Auto Driver' had overtones of communist ideology. I believe in communist ideology. I organised a felicitation function for (DMK leader and Tamil Nadu chief minister) M Karunanidhi as I am an admirer of his scholarship and erudition. I am a DMK sympathiser, but politics is farthest from my mind. I did not even go for electioneering.

Q: The trend is now changing. How long are you going to play the role of an avenging cop?

A: You are asking this question just because a few love stories have clicked at the box office. Film trends change every 6 months.
Q: You are still a hero of the masses. Why are you not making efforts to cater to the class?

A: I agree. I am more popular in the rural areas down south. But some of my major hits have done well in 'A' centres also.

Q: Despite the hoopla that preceded it, your 125th film, 'Ulavuthurai,' did not do as well as expected. What went wrong?

A: I think we were too excited that it was my 125th film and went on adding things not necessary for the film. Thereby the film lost its edge. Technically it is a brilliant film and it is the first Tamil film shot under water. We should not have killed the heroine in the first half, and that I think was a major mistake. Still the film did well down south.

Q: What are your future films?

A: I never plan my future. Right not I am working for 'Dharma,' a sentimental story. In the next film, I am doing a double role, of father and son.

Q: Is it your love for Tamil that prevents you from acting in other language films?

A: I am a great lover of Tamil. I am not shrewd enough to pick up other languages and I feel it is meaningless to act in a film without knowing the language. I am happy and contented being an exclusive Tamil actor.

A: Time was when I approached every top director, begging for a role. Now I consider all my directors as big. Most of my films have been directed by Chandrashekar, Rama Narayanan and Sundarrajan. I have struggled and come up to this level on my own. I know what it is to struggle. So in my own productions, I give opportunities to directors who are going through a lean phase.

I don't reject a director outright just because he has given a string of flops. Hits and flops are not in our hands. I prefer Film Institute students because they not only come up with fresh ideas but are flexible and receptive to our suggestions.

Q: While some of your earlier films propagated leftist ideas, your recent films and your off-screen activities suggest that you are interested in entering politics. Are you?

A: My 'Sivappu Malli' and 'Auto Driver' had overtones of communist ideology. I believe in communist ideology. I organised a felicitation function for (DMK leader and Tamil Nadu chief minister) M Karunanidhi as I am an admirer of his scholarship and erudition. I am a DMK sympathiser, but politics is farthest from my mind. I did not even go for electioneering.

Q: The trend is now changing. How long are you going to play the role of an avenging cop?

A: You are asking this question just because a few love stories have clicked at the box office. Film trends change every 6 months.
Q: You are still a hero of the masses. Why are you not making efforts to cater to the class?

A: I agree. I am more popular in the rural areas down south. But some of my major hits have done well in 'A' centres also.

Q: Despite the hoopla that preceded it, your 125th film, 'Ulavuthurai,' did not do as well as expected. What went wrong?

A: I think we were too excited that it was my 125th film and went on adding things not necessary for the film. Thereby the film lost its edge. Technically it is a brilliant film and it is the first Tamil film shot under water. We should not have killed the heroine in the first half, and that I think was a major mistake. Still the film did well down south.

Q: What are your future films?

A: I never plan my future. Right not I am working for 'Dharma,' a sentimental story. In the next film, I am doing a double role, of father and son.

Q: Is it your love for Tamil that prevents you from acting in other language films?

A: I am a great lover of Tamil. I am not shrewd enough to pick up other languages and I feel it is meaningless to act in a film without knowing the language. I am happy and contented being an exclusive Tamil actor.

My first pongal film in theatre is chinna gounder with my family (Sangam Theatre) we missed some scences .. a good family entertainer its a very sucessfull film among the pongal releases , rajini's mannan released on same day @ Abirami , it also ran very well but CG was a step ahead... another movie in my mind is sethupathi IPS its released in pongal (1994) my uncle take me to this movie (He was a harcore fan of him) at the time kamal s maganathi and sathyaraj s amaithipadai were released. amaithipadai was a big sucess among the pongal movie .. like this ~~~ maganathi -Hit, Sethuapthi IPS - Super hit & Amaithipadai was Super dooper hit...

The 1988 Tamil classic Senthoora Poove will be remade in Telugu with an all new cast, says producer Thandra Grihith, who has got the remake rights of the movie. Talking to IANS, Thandra Grihith said, "We are yet to zero in on the director since we're looking for someone who could do justice to the original. Meanwhile, we are on the verge of signing up an all new cast for the film. We hope to start shooting from December." He added, "We also intend to modify the original story to suit the sensibility of the current generation. I'm extremely thankful to the producers of the original for giving me permission to remake the film." Senthoora Poove featured Vijayakanth, Ramki and Nirosha in important roles. Directed by PR Devaraj, the movie had enjoyed a run of over 200 days at the Box Office. It was one of the highest grosser Tamil films of the year 1988. Thandra admits remakes are becoming a fad. He said, "Remake trend is fast catching up, but it's not always easy to make them. One needs to make them with lots of responsibility because lots of expectations ride on them. The respect for the original takes a beating when its remake turns out to be a dud."

Kaalaiyum Neeye Maalaiyum Neeye - i haven't seen this.. was searching for this long time.. just to see Captain & Ilayathilagam sharing the screen together..

& i agree that, Tamizh Selvan (way better than the much hyped Ramana)... but TS is from a top director released when he was about to be sidelined from main list of top actors... but Ramana is from a novice & released when no one expects even a half decent film from VK..

& surprised to see Chinna gounder in others category.. pls put this in fav. category... best mix of story-screenplay-dialogues-music-humour-action & underplayed acting from captain that you ever get.. the opening 20 mins is one among the best u get to see.. character establishment - title/ hero praising song - punch dialogue - fight - mother sentiment... flawless flow of events

I have few films on VHS, and some on VCD. Then got a few DVDs, but found out that they were converted from VHS or VCD.
But I like the idea of remastering VK movies.

Captain is the one who bought back the art of dubbing instead of tamizh subtitle for non-thamizh dialogues in virudhagiri.. (starts with the training to scotland yard :lol2: .. then southindianising the popular TAKEN dialogue in explosive interval block)

My mistake, all the above mentioned are my favorite, but I mixed it by bringing in the genres. I used 'others' in the same motive as your explanation - those films have everything. My personal favorite will always be the measured performance by VK in Vaidhegi Kaathirunthaal. Amazing film + even today I get sunk into the climax.
