Listening to K J Yesudas solo Malayalam hits or I would say listening only to first song in this list. அரிகே அரிகே என்னாகிலும் எத்ர தூரம் எத்ர தூரம் (Dooram Arike 1980). I could not go past this song. This one kills me like anything. Just that prelude guitar piece and the guitar piece at the end of first interlude is enough for me to put it in loop. How could he freak out with guitar for a pathos song without spoiling the feel of the song? Only Maestro fossible :notworthy: (stealing hub's most admired word!).
The prelude starts similar to Nenjathai Killaathe title theme, but the way guitar is played in the middle feels like someone is breaking it :lol:. Never heard such amazing guitar work, everytime how can he play differently. The first interlude starts off with a phaser, but I thought there is no place for guitar then, but suddenly for few moments guitar is played which is totally different from the actual flow, but totally in sync. The same is played at the end of interlude which is the most fascinating part to me in the whole song.

Coming to the rendering, When KJY goes to lower octaves (please observe when he sings "Arike Arike" and "Ee IruL", his voice sounds like never heard before, very very sweet. Normally lower octaves does not register to many singers. Even if it registers, it will not be sounding as beautiful as KJY's. Beautiful tune and interludes with that magical touch of meloncholy violin, Mesmerizing song!. In fact, all songs in this film are outstanding.

Recommended to listen to a good quality rather than this youtube link to appreciate it better, especially the guitar.

IR possibly got a set of new toys when composing for this movie and tried out the "special effects" and the songs were quite trendy. (pEsakkoodAdhu being the best number IMO).

The rhythm arrangement of this song takes one from wherever he is and throws into a boat effortlessly. The most enjoyable part is the concluding pallavi - SPB thoroughly enjoying himself!

Recently listened with keen interest, the two famous boat/ship courtship songs “kaaviriye kavikuyile” and “varudhu varudhu iLam kaatru” . The former has louder row rythms and the later has that incessant steamer rhythm .
I particularly love the wafting effect when Janaki sings the lines
“poonkaatru thaalaatta thaaLaadha mogam
Theeraadha dhagangaL theeramal theerum” – her voice quivers with the sea wind.
In “varudhu varudhu”, it’s the intricate flute twirl in something like Hamsadhwani that leads up to the soaring Janaki’s “oorai chutrum … “ second charanam start.
Raja’s songs are generously littered with such wonders that I can savour life long.
The songs I can unwind a long week with.

This song is more like a 'kadhambam' than a 'poomAlai' (typically made of one flower) :-)

Starts with a strong bass guitar / cymbal crash / keyboard sounds followed by majestic MGR'ish trumpet / horn sounds. (I think all this wind-instrument grandeur was a Sathya movies demand to Raja). Raja freaks out in the prelude / interlude / postludes mixing all kinds of genres / instruments / change of pace etc.

SPB / SJ also possibly got a free hand and sing in a way slightly uncharacteristic for a Raja song, enjoying themselves and not worrying about getting "disciplined" :-)

The most enjoyable sounds to me are a) the background for the pallavi (chords / bass / jazzy drum sound - rattling the cymbals etc). b) the sudden northie style tabla - claps in 1st interlude combined with qawwalish singing by SJ as a dialog with sweet lead guitar c) ending part of the 2nd interlude where wind instruments sound quite majestic, much like the third interlude of iLamai idhO idhO, followed by a non-percussion + guitar backgrounded start to second saraNam, very sweet!

Current MDs can probably build 5 songs out of this one IR number :wink:

'poomalai' a lovely song. Now listening to 'varudhu varudhu' from 'Brahma' Thanks to thumburu for speaking about the song and app_eng for the link.

Yesterday I was in a theatre where the operator had loaded the reel wrongly!! So switched on the lines and started playing Raja's telugu songs. 'O Paapa Laali' and 'Gallu Gallu Gallu Mana'. Was pleasantly surprised. Generally the filler music in most theatres is some recent kutthu paatu.

Fantastic composition, thumping rhythms. haunting male chorus, super interlaced drums, excellent counterpointed pipe melody in the second interlude, delightful piano prelude..
but overpowering everything else, Malaysia sings a stunner and elevates the song to a heights where other playback singers can only dream of.
He puts his heart, lungs and soul into it and makes it a classic. The charanams are a howler and the breath control is AWESOME..
May GOD bless him with speedy recovery and renewed vigour!!!

Angey Yaaru Paaru. We need more youthful compositions like this from Raaja.

Kelviyum Naane and Bathilum Naane is again a well UNknown film (starring Karthik, Aruna). The film may be deserved to be unknown but not their songs. Amazing guitar centric songs!
Endrum Vaana VeLiyil, Aadai Kondu Aadum (similar to Aayiram thaamarai mottukkale) or Ninaithu Ninaithu (P Susheela and that second interlude with Veena, makes a beautiful number) or Raja-BSS's excellent Sollikodu, the songs are dearest to me. Since I like them a lot, I mentioned about this in another forum as well.

Endrum Vaana VeLiyil (my favorite and pick) - Starts with super confident guitar (with piano), "bestest" after Ilaya Nila. When Unni Menon starts humming, again that bass guitar chords, unbelievable!! Pallavi again is backed up by guitar riffs. But the first interlude starts surprisingly with a brisk piano and guitar followed by heavy violins. I don't know why Maestro always saves the best for second interlude. The piano run in second interlude is not we hear very often. Beautiful tune and song, but again it has become a rare gem, rather than popular. :(
In Aadai Kondu Aadum, Maestro has done a beautiful jugalbandi between Mridhangam and Guitar (what a combination!) in second interlude. After this juggle bandi is over, observe the sound of guitar, a very new sound. How he accents flute with guitar at the end of interlude, astonishing!!

The surprise bonus package (in all songs) of orchestration are mridhangam, piano and veena supporting the mighty guitar, not to forget the life line, violins.

By the time the thrill of a new pallavi melody & saraNam melody are wearing out (middle pallavi & saraNam 2 are essentially "repeattu" and may turn off some impatient youths) he throws in extra magic to "numb" the listener in bOthai :-)

Sorry, this mudhuku-scratching doesn't smell good :-(

Even a child can understand the ulterior interests of Shaji - a non-entity and wannabe writer - in using the name of an iconic singer whose "foregrounders" had Kamal & Rajini among them. Someone in sick condition whose name can be used to create passion by way of slander such as " neglected when he was down by very big names, such as Ilayaraja".

May be the efforts of Shaji -i.e. ottuNNi tech - didn't click well and now JeMo calls it sour grapes ("எந்த எதிர்பார்ப்பும் இன்றி" etc).

Endrum Vaana VeLiyil, Aadai Kondu Aadum (similar to Aayiram thaamarai mottukkale) or Ninaithu Ninaithu (P Susheela and that second interlude with Veena, makes a beautiful number) or Raja-BSS's excellent Sollikodu, the songs are dearest to me. Since I like them a lot, I mentioned about this in another forum as well.

Endrum Vaana VeLiyil (my favorite and pick) - Starts with super confident guitar (with piano), "bestest" after Ilaya Nila. When Unni Menon starts humming, again that bass guitar chords, unbelievable!! Pallavi again is backed up by guitar riffs. But the first interlude starts surprisingly with a brisk piano and guitar followed by heavy violins. I don't know why Maestro always saves the best for second interlude. The piano run in second interlude is not we hear very often. Beautiful tune and song, but again it has become a rare gem, rather than popular. :(
In Aadai Kondu Aadum, Maestro has done a beautiful jugalbandi between Mridhangam and Guitar (what a combination!) in second interlude. After this juggle bandi is over, observe the sound of guitar, a very new sound. How he accents flute with guitar at the end of interlude, astonishing!!

The surprise bonus package (in all songs) of orchestration are mridhangam, piano and veena supporting the mighty guitar, not to forget the life line, violins.

V_S - nice find; I've not listened to this album before.
However, Aadai Kondu Aadum does have a deadlier gulty twin in the form of Vela Pala Ledu from the movie Abhilasha (not sure which one was first). SPB+SJ vocals. Need I elaborate any further to compare it with the Tamizh version? (I dont know if its just me, but I feel the guitars are much clearer in the gult version. Or maybe its the scratchy thiraipaadal copy)

Malaysia and Murai and Raaja - in Kannada - a Unique combination. The song is the absolute tribute to the combination Raja and MV. Raja ups the ante with the awesome prelude and Malaysia matches with an awesome pallavi singing hitting the blocks right from the first note. Then Raaja throws in a challenge with a first interlude, and Malaysia proves equal to the task. Then Raaja goes into his "Zone" and comes up with the best second interlude of the century and then Malaysia matches the "freakishness" with his non stop second charanam starter which is a blinder. And then ends up the song with a "hrrr hrrr" that can only be done by Kishoreda - no matter what freakish line of instrumentation Raaja serves up, Malaysia proves equal to the challenge. The song is a delight - needless to say.. A Raja Malaysia classic...

Aadai Kondu Aadum certainly does bring to mind "Aayiram thaamarai" also a certain snake charming musical touch, it succeeds in sounding lilting and yet jazzy as well...

I couldn't believe it was Unni Menon singing "Endrum Vaana Veliyil" great write up btw, though think of the admiration a rare gem has in being found and shared rather than the popular song that is shared by all...just a silly musing.

"Ninaithu Ninaithu"....beautiful rendition by P. Susheela and touching lyrics as well...beautiful use of violins here...

Naalai Engal Kalyanam. Thanks to Devaraagam for introducing me to this film through 'IR Song of the day' thread.
Again a wonderful album, but one song totally caught me by surprise.It is 'Vaanam Bhoomi' by M G Sreekumar and Minmini.
It starts with a male chorus followed by gentle flute. The surprise element is the pallavi and charanams have same melody (tune), but Maestro uses the interlude space mostly as charanam (chorus, not just humming) and the rest for instruments. Basically he shuffled the interlude with charanam and vice versa keeping the same pallavi, how did he do that, can't believe how beautiful the outcome is. Totally Stumped!! :notworthy:
This song is best to be heard while driving, as you will drive at the same speed, just like song's pace and momentum.

pAththi is the planting bed & nAththu is the crop. I think now it would be easy to decipher. The crop thrives only because of the planting bed. And she had a thought which is nourished only by her dreams and wishes.

Wow. First time listening to it. I used to snobbishly dismiss the song since its from one of those B Grade films. Anyway lovely song with superb orchestration and fantastic singing by Karthik. The rhythms are synth I think but love the bass 'punches'. The female singing (Bela Shinde I think, wrong credits in thiraipaadal) is very poor though. I like the charanam's melody more than the pallavi. Super song :-) :-)

actually its copied(or taken) from Ilayaraja's "Netru Vandha kaatru" song from movie Kanmani released in the year 1994..

IMDB states that Grahan movie released in 2001. But I remember purchasing Grahan audio in 1998. :confused:

But either way both movie and audio were released after 1994, which was the year when Kanmani released.

Discovered Enna Sugamaana Ulagam from movie Garjanai through one of the hub posts paying tribute to MV. Don't know how I missed out on this one. Amazing song, sung beautifully by MV and UmaRamanan. What a prelude, that solo violin, reminded a little bit of Mella Mella from Vaazhkai.

Discovered Enna Sugamaana Ulagam from movie Garjanai through one of the hub posts paying tribute to MV. Don't know how I missed out on this one. Amazing song, sung beautifully by MV and UmaRamanan. What a prelude, that solo violin, reminded a little bit of Mella Mella from Vaazhkai.

That whole album was Raja in youthful elements...oru ooril oru maharANi, vanthadhu vanthadhu nalla idam, enna sukamAna ulakam, varuvAi anbE - all with freaky guitar / synth sounds, Raja playing around with some new toys:-)

Very true app. Garjanai released in 1981 I think. 76-82 is the period in which Raaja did extreme experimentation. My take is that he was still trying to establish his own genre which became so perfect after.

This song is identical to doing meditation. Calms your body, mind and soul. Great pick Jaiganesh!. It is from Sri Yedukondala Swami (1991). All six songs in this film are truly divine. Other great songs, one and only SPB's 'Saptha Shaila', Mano-IR's 'Om Kali Haranaa', Chitra-SPB's 'Prabho Venkatesa' and SJ's 'Yedukondala Swami'. Thanks for the Great rewind!

Kelviyum Naane and Bathilum Naane is again a well UNknown film (starring Karthik, Aruna). The film may be deserved to be unknown but not their songs. Amazing guitar centric songs!
Endrum Vaana VeLiyil, Aadai Kondu Aadum (similar to Aayiram thaamarai mottukkale) or Ninaithu Ninaithu (P Susheela and that second interlude with Veena, makes a beautiful number) or Raja-BSS's excellent Sollikodu, the songs are dearest to me. Since I like them a lot, I mentioned about this in another forum as well.

Sometimes it is really hard to justify the beauty of a song. Thats how I feel about Ninaithu Ninaithu.

Wow! Wow! Wow! that's a freakiest song. Just now listened and stunned!. Amazing discovery Jai!! Yep Psychedelic Rock at its best. Bass guitar is more pronounced and with that haunting effect (nooravadhu naal suspense like) and SPB's one the best and how he freaks out. Sings it with all kinds of voice and modulation, extremely satisfying song. Definitely would be awesome, if we listen this song in good audio quality. What an experimentation by Maestro for this unknown movie. Thalaivaa! :notworthy: pullarikuthu! But very very sad that this song is not heard at all :sad:. Song of the year!

True - we have discussed in the early avatar of hub a lot about those songs and I still remember it as a song that our resident ARR crazy fan Maddy loves profusely.

kAlaiyil kEttadhu kOvil mani from senthamizh pAttu - Multi-part choral harmony prelude is mind-blowing - the song continues the trend of 'shakes' further. Even the first interlude is full of it. Scale shift down (I think) to the charanam with tabla .. two/three nadai changes in the tabla as well.. now the pallavi repeats with drums+tabla. The second interlude tones down the 'shake' concept introduced earlier. Amazing .. was on repeat for the whole 45 min commute to work today. IR sometimes gets out scoring a duck like that happens to a talented cricketer, but this is a century .. beautifully played.. and I just as we evaluate and remember players for their centuries (or high scores) we remember IR.

Deepangale is a stunner to me. Hearing it for the first time. What a freakish number from IR. The vocals & orchestration in the first interlude reminds of a song from Black Sabbath's Paranoid (it's the only slow song of that album). Unbelievable singing from SPB.

A perfect soundtrack to kick start the morning! Even if someone had a difficult yesterday, or not feeling well, once he hears this album, every difficulty/pain will be crushed and dimnished into air. The energy we get in every song is outstanding. SPB and S Janaki transfer their energy in their singing to us. Today on a dull morning I was waking up my kids dancing with these songs, especially that amazing "Navvindi Malle Chandu Nachindi Girl Friendu". The dull morning suddenly became very bright. SPB and SJ freaked out (as if Maestro was not there while recording :)). Guitar vamping is ultimate!. Everyone became jubilant. Such is the power of these songs.
This whole soundtrack will be our subrabatham for few more days. Eureka Saka Mikha!! Yahoo!!

For individuals who think they are convinced that Ilaiayaraaja sir is stuck in a time warp and cannot deliver anything that would satisfy the needs of a stereotypical urban youth, would be really surprised by and enjoy Masaka Venaka from Gaayam 2. Though the song does require some repeated listening and scrutiny, it nonetheless, I believe captures the pulse of the new generation.
If this song was in English, it would be a perfect match for Rihanna as the higher notes of this song i.e. the chorus, seem to me to be tailor made for her. However, Anitha does soar here in her own way. I’m not sure if Raaja sir listens to Rihanna or for that matter Grime / Dub-step music, (music genres from the underground scene of London) but I feel, knowing him, he probably does, as he is open to all types of music. Conversely, if he doesn’t, he deserves serious applause for creating this kind music out of experimentation and for that matter he has jumped ahead of time with this composition, be it the music or melody.
The key factor here however is that his approach depicts his trademark style of composing and he has not aped sounds from the west. Right from the air guitar in the prelude to the exploration of Latin styles in the first interlude, his ease of blending genres in a melting pot is clearly visible. Many are aware he mostly delivers that bright sparkle of the whole song in the second interlude. In this song that is once again proved as the most distinctive Indian orientated part of the song appears in the second interlude. The unpredictability of that harmonium / accordion sound is the real highlight of the song. One wonders where he gets all this fire in composing interludes from. Even though the second interlude starts off on an Indian note it surprisingly concludes in a Latin format which emphasizes why I don’t have a clue about the instrument being a harmonium or an accordion.
Out of all the songs from this album, this one impacted me the most as all others did have that nostalgic sweet familiarity. However, this impacted me as it was a fresh song but once I got stuck in the mould of the song I came to the conclusion that Raaja sir has always moved along with time, but maybe we are sometimes naive to acknowledge that.

Super post Sunil! Gaayam-2 is one of Raja's best soundtrack. Only 'Andalala Lokam' and 'Endukamma Prema Prema' got little prominence in this noisy music world. But other tracks which are also equally brilliant: Masaka Venaka, Eluthundru, Kalagane (my favorite) were trashed mercilessly without being given a second look at it. I would say it's all a result of pre-occupation rather than genuinely. The song 'Masaka Venaka' is again a beautiful experimentation by Maestro, which got unnoticed. As you said it is a very fresh and different song compared to others. But good atleast, last year, Suresh Kumar brought up one another beauty: 'Eluthundru' in his blog (ursmusically). Now you have brought up this song. Thanks again and you have made me listen to this soundtrack again.

Superb post. My views are almost a replica of yours. I had posted about this song here when I reviewed the album and have later posted how much I liked this song in Twitter.

I am not sure but I think this song was not used in the movie. If only a capable director had picturized this song, it would have reached a bigger audience. This song is a terrific song and the whole 'Gayam 2' album is a gem. Not a single song in it that you would not want to rewind.

He has interpreted this music in a very interesting manner. Raja and Bach having conversation between them while coming up with this piece.

Suresh I join you for "Melle Onnu" as we have discussed this song umpteen times. A terrific song from his last 10 yrs list, where raja stands up and says "Iam stll here and not lost even a bit of my creative instincts.". The humming at the beginning of this song always takes me to Munnar Hills/backwaters where Satyan shared his experience working with raja. Infact this is one song which needs to be enjoyed when you are lonely and the feelings are hard to express...

Wonderful songs. Though Raja has done very few Kannada films compared to other languages, he has given some all time gems. "Sweety' is terrific. I didn't like 'Bharjari Bete' when I first heard it and said so, only to be admonished by Rajasaranam !!! Now this is a favourite of mine. This song and the Janaki solo are just out of the world.

Listening to "Ooradangum saamathile" - Swarnalatha and Uma ramanan simply sweeten the song. But the clincher in the song is the background bass hum that manipulates your listening into a trance. Though it is as simple in its programming and arrangement as a "tampura", its scale changes and refrains are ethereally penetrating. When the mild guitar notes play in the back ground while the ladies are singing - it is "OUT OF THE WORLD". and when the song ends with the beat of the thavil as if to say - the song is over, you can come back now... Awesome

Also the song (ooradangum) reminds of "Gurvaayoorappa" from Pudhu pudhu arthangal - Same raaga perhaps.
swarnalatha - special note goes to her - her voice like the lone carnatic violin plays on - sometimes pushing us to the excitement and fear (oh you are going to go shrill here ....) but she has the awesome control that she is able to flirt with vocal disaster and still come out on top of the song.
Uma Ramanan - sincere - understated - plays the solid bedrock on which swarnalatha can root herself bringing in the risky flourishes - as much as Raja can allow her...

However the song totally is Raja's - One can only bow your head awed by the music that this man produces - but I want to hold mine high up - for he has filled me with some new confidence and trust in music - and in humanity that can produce music like this - day in and day out..

Listened to a heavenly composition from the movie “Manjal Nila” which falls in the league of “then poove” song from Anbulla rajanikanth.. .Yearning for more of these kind of romantic duets ,but unfortunately we are missing these pattern of songs from him nowadays..The song openes with that sax/flute bit which makes you spellbound and then takes you through a breezy drive instantly putting you in a state of trance! The rendition by Jayachandran and PS needs no special mention. I have pushed this song to the top of my playlist and am sure that this will be there on top for quiet a while…

Jai - Thanks for Thangaliyalli from Janma Janma Da Anubandha. A stunner to say the least. It's going on in the loop since last night and I will take my own time to come out of it. What a rendition by SJ.. no words would be enough to praise the mind boggling music churned out in this song.

I'm a big fan of IR's spooky/ghost songs genre. This man has shown unparalleled genius and creativity in the orchestration for spooky songs. A few of my favs:
Devathai Ilam Devi, Uruguthe Idhayame, Vetta Veli, Koodu Thedi etc. Thangaliyalli would be in the top of my list now.

Yes, I too was surprised initially when I was just hearing the song, but it anyway sits beautifully in the song. Only recently I discovered from this video, that Sathyan sir would have narrated this situation to Raja and it perfectly fell in place as narrated. I also read and heard that many didn't like that last piece, as it was childish, but they all would have failed to understand this beautiful concept, just by hearing.

Sadly some combos don’t always spell wow, saw Unni K singing a song in an IR album and of course automatically thought magic…not so this time for me… curious how SPB and Chitra dominate “Nammura Mandara Hoove” and in “KV” there is much more variety of singers but more isn’t always better I guess. All I can say is that whatever is in “NMH” it is sorely missing in “KV.”

I really do think there is a connection between word sounds and the music they go with...I understand not one word of Kannadam but the words flow so much better with "Halli L" song...this is not the first time I've realized this,
I sorely felt this in the earlier years of Rahman's songs when done in Hindi and then sung again in Tamil (not just the pronunciation flubs but the feeling of lyrics stuffed into the music ...sometimes the results were truly cringe-worthy...case in point Tamil version of Asoka.

First in the best of recent malayalam (post 2000) definitely comes Bhagyadevatha. Every song in this film is a purest gem. Such a sheer depth in every composition. IR-Sathyan combo is tremendous. I agree, that I can just live with these melodies for many days without even going back to Raja's 80s. This is also one of the reason I could not vote the poll in this thread.
By post 2000, I also meant some his greatest works in Tamizh, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi like Hey Ram, Bharathi, Azhagi, Pithamagan, Virumandi, Athu oru kana kalam, Shiva2006, Anumanaspadam, Aa dinagalu, Mallepoovu, Bhagyada balegara, Prem Kahani, Cheeni Kum, Paa and a whole bunch of 2009 songs. Can't miss these ones.

Welcome to the club of 2000s. We need more members :) I am sure Raj_Musing will also be happy to welcome you. 'Bhagyadevatha' is outstanding album. 'Katha Thudarunnu' no less. The only Sathyan Raja that was no optimal was 'Innathe Chinta Vishayam'. The songs were decent but it didn't have one killer melody which each of the other films have. 'kaiyetha' and 'mandaara poo' from Vinodayatra, 'yaaro paadunnu' from 'Katha Thudarunnu', 'swapnangal kanneyudhiya' from 'Bhagyadevatha', 'kodamanjin' from 'KKS', 'poo kungumapoo' from 'Rasathantram', 'melle onnu' from 'Manasinakkare, 'endhu paranjalaum' and 'swasathin thalam' from 'Achuvinte Amma'. Each of these has the ability go deep inside your heart and stay put there. Sathyan loves melodies, Raja loves melodies and in turn we get melodies which we will always love!! I am ready to give up lot of 80s Raja for these songs :)

Yes, I would love to join you guys.:-D All the songs mentioned by you are masterpieces, it will stay with you forever. I don't know somehow in Malayalam, Raja gets very rich tunes, compared to the same in other languages. May be because he is more elevated and impacted by the core story and its locations which has more nativity. Definitely language sweetness also helps there. When you listen to any of these songs, it takes you directly to those beautiful lakes or under the shades of those beautiful coconut trees, not to forget the typical kerala houses. All these adds up to the listening experience.

JG! Thanks for ‘Aadal paadalil’! This song has ‘kickassness’ written all over it! The energy, the groove, the exuberance, boy-oh-boy, this one’s a dasher every moment!
I started my day with this song and it has been playing ever since; I just cant get enough of this one! I’m not a very big fan of TMS+IR combo (save some whacky ones like the carnatic-remix Kabhi Kabhi and a few similar stuff), but TMS smacks the ball out of the park here!
Thiraipaadal says this one’s from 79 and the enthusiasm of the new-kid-on-the-block Raja shows up quite clearly (not exactly ‘new’ though; he must have been some 50 odd films old by then going by his strike rate!).
But his 70s stuff is, to me, still the formative years, ‘genius in the making’ phase. Influences are heavily apparent in the work while still displaying his inherent wizardry over instrumentation. Take this song for eg.; the impact of RDB (and a bit of MSV) on IR can easily be felt here in the pounding rhythm (loud claps and drums) and an easy sing-along tune. This one seems like the thagappan of his subsequent songs in this genre like Baby shake it baby (movie ?), Swing swing (moodupani), Thullum ilamai idhu (anbe odi vaa), etc. The progression and evolution of the 80s IR is very interesting. While songs like Aadal paadalil have the groovy electric guitars and a kind of rawness/edginess, its only from the 80s that the complex,intricate bass lines and precision in tune, get added to the armory, thus forming the inimitable Raaja signature (Ilami idho idho, poo pota dhavani, poo malai oru paavai, and the likes).

Suresh, if allowed, I’ll take a bit of both, the butter and the ghee..78-84! Idha adikka aal illa!
But coming to think of it, what boggles the mind is this 0.5kg of cerebral matter producing an EVK/Moondrampirai in the 80s, Guru in 90s, Thiruvasagam/Virumandi/MX post 2000, an Uliyin Osai/Naan kadavul/Paa towards 2010! And we’re just talking about the creamiest of the cream of each decade. Idhula vera Thamizh, Malayalam, Kannadam, Telungu, Indhi, ippidi total area attack! Shbaaa.. mudiyala!

As I said, while 78 to 84 in Tamil is bread and butter to most Raja fans, my staple happens to the 80s Malayalam. I like those songs so much that I don't listen to them :) I mean, I want their magic to stay on and on. So I hear them once in a while only. 'rithubeda kalpana', 'poovai virinju', 'alliilam poovo', 'thamarakili', 'kiliye kilye' Olangal songs, 'e neelima than', 'bul bul maine', 'thazampoo' and many more.

Look at that list you've come up with now! (Reminds me of Noorani Shaasthapreedhi! Ada pradhaman, Chakka pradhaman, Godhuma pradhaman, Paal payasam... all one after the other! Yedha kudikardhu? Yedha vidardhu?) But if Kuliradunnu maanathu is going to be relegated to 'many more', I'll raise red flag and protest!
The last song in my list was Aakashadindha Jaari (Janma janmada anubandha). Like the way you guys had written about Sathyan movie songs and the picture of Kerala it paints, this one's the Karnataka counterpart. IMO, one of the very best of IR's kannnada work, which in turn happens to be one very close to my heart! Trust Raja to leave you in a dilemma!

aakashadhindhaa jaari and "gandaagi naanu hutti " are awesome tribal/folk songs by Raaja in Kannada. Aakashadindha is so richly done and experimental (with the counterpointed chorus in the interludes), Raaja took its template and made "Raasave onnai naan" from Thanikkaattu Raaja. Nice picks KV!! and welcome!!!

Nope. I cannot relegate 'kulirandunnu' to 'others'. My problem was all three Olangal songs are amazing. So if you observe carefully you can see I have said the songs of 'Olangal'.

As far as Karnataka nativity goes, 'Bhoomi Geethe' would also be present along with 'Namoora Mandara Hoove'. As Plum said in an earlier occasion, the songs of 'Bhoomi Geethe' transport us to the Western Ghats immediately.

The feel with which Raja sings this one is sheer bliss..The old world charm,the melancholic effect which the song produces is simply unimaginable..not to forget the guitar interlude which is simply mindblowing..The song may be ephemeral but the impact everlasting..

Yes skr, every song in this collection is stunning! Starting from Kadhal Panpadu till Thendral Idai (actually last song from CD is 'En iniya pon') it is a feast to ears and soul.
Just want to mention 'Idhu Kanavugal' from Nizhal Thedum Nenjangal. Very Haunting composition by Maestro and excellently performed by Deepan Chakravarthi and SJ.
Not sure why Deepan is not singing these days. He still sings the same (as I recently watched some episodes of Ragamalika). I feel Raja and others should use him, very good singer.

The 'Jwala' song is wonderful and yes the song is about sadness. It is a surprise as usual from Raja. We can't expect such a song in a Chiranjeevi movie from other music directors.

Currently stuck in ASK. The 'kuthikira' songs interludes are amazing. I don't think anyone can think of such deep interludes on synth as Raja can.
