Just heard two superb all time great songs sung by Shailaja on 'Manadodu Mano' which happens on Friday evenings on Jaya TV. 'edho ninaivugal' and 'chinnan chiru vayadhil'. Both of which Shailaja had sung with Jesudas. No both running inside my head. Shailaja said that if a singer wants to give good training for his/her voice, then 'edho ninavugal' should be practised regularly!! Wonderful, wonderful songs both of them.

Just now watched this programme here in Eastern time. That's a great composition with lot of variations.
Especially when Shailaja ji sings these underlines words, could not believe Maestro tunes all the way down (kaalam thaan veNdum) and then up immediately. Especially when she starts with vendum..m..mmm (second time) and touches 'thevagial ellam' even higher. And then the way he connects back to pallavi. WoW!!

This round is 'Maestro Ilaiyaraaja -Mohan Combination'. Please checkout the links if you have not watched earlier. Manivannan talks very high of Raja.
Great songs sung, 'Udaya Geetham Paaduven' by Bharat Sundar (carnatic idol winner), Vaa Vennila, Paadava, Paadavanthathor Gaanam.

Everybody calls Mohan as too lucky to have got those songs from Raja. Manivannan recollects that when Mohan is with Mike in the poster, other actors will be afraid and its true. :lol: I agree.

But whatever it is, I certainly miss Mohan films, I want him back, Anybody with me? :D

Nowadays lot of music programs in Jaya TV, Hariyudan Naan, Raagamaalika, Manathodu Mano, and with now december season, can't miss the carnatic fever, great going Jaya TV.

Manivannan spoke his heart out. I admired when he said, that we directors used to work in other directors films as our own films. It was more than film making and they were all a big family, very happy to hear that.!!

The ragamalika continued today with Manivannan as the chief guest. A couple of incidents he related today were hilarious:

1. He said that Raja not only gave good songs but also experimented a lot. Infact he once asked him (Manivannan) to sing along with SPB!! It so happened that Manivannan later sang a few songs in Kasturi Raja movies it seems. Once when he and Bhagyaraj were shopping in Singapore, they found a tape titled 'Manivannan Hits'

2. Once when he had gone to Raja to tell the story and get songs, before him stood another director. After telling the story that director said, "I need one nice melody here". Raja said, "Don't worry. I will tune a nice melody here." Mannivannan said that the director instead of keeping quite continued, "I need a nice melody like 'aatha aathorama vaariya" !!!

The participants sang well. The song currently running in my mind after watching the program is, 'salai oram' from 'Payanangal Mudivadhillai'.

Thanks Rajkumarc, Mella pesungal is an excellent pick. I still remember I got introduced to this film and songs in 1985, when one of my friend's Anna brought this casette. He was a great fan of IR at that time itself. The first song we listened was Kaathal Saagaathu'. At that time, he used to explain us the nuances of this song especially the guitar usage, but as usual, I didn't get anything, but just we nodded and enjoyed the song. But now looking back, I should thank him, atleast now I can get something what he was conveying. Those were the times, when I slowly got hold off Maestro, after I never went back.

Uyire Uravil's best feature afaik, is the unpredictable song structure. Antha Yetra Irakangal when SJ sings 'Unnidam Vande Serum, Sangamam Kande Theerum'. Great melody!!

Only very recently heard and am hearing "oorrorama aathu pakkam" from 'Idhaya Kovil'. To be honest I have heard the other songs in this movie (but of course!!) but never heard this song. Two songs really got to me with contrasting emotions and styles.
1. Aagayam mele paadhaaLam keezhe KJY singing with gay abandon and the fusion of goan christian music and our local flavour is a delight.
2. Endhan pon vanname - amazing song by TMS. he breathes his majesty and soul into the tune by Raaja. The interludes are worth their notes in gold and diamond. I was wishing for a WCM counterpoint in the song, but did not hear any. To my surprise, Sarod and veenai played the same note in the 3rd interlude to create a heavenly effect.

And yes - these songs from 79 had three charanams and I was blessed with three heavenly interludes from master.

Listening to the song in ear phones can cause you loose grip over surroundings. The stereophonic arrangement is delectable and pure jazz and blues delight. Beyond the coolness of the genre, Raaja adds delicate instrumental layers that accompany the landing of every sandham - so lyrically, every instrumentation layer complements the words in a collaborative fashion - as if saying "yes" or "punctuating the flow of lyrics. This is one of Raaja signature, not letting the lyrics be mouthed by the singer without any accompaniment, but rather creating a never ending conversation between words and music.
Awesome awesome song. This is my Raja song discovery of the year.

A Delight in Shankarabharanam

Another awesome composition from the factory of Ilaiyaraja..Suresh Wadkar is generally synonymous with Ilayaraja for 1 song viz Aye Zindagi from Sadma [Hindi version of Moondram Pirai], but that was till i heard this wonderful melodious number..

The song opens with a bank of violins and Strings playing counterpoint to each other..then Wadkar takes over with the silken rendition of Jiske Sahare..followed by Anuradha Paudwal..the strings beautifully accompanying them and playing Paka Vadhiyam..;)

The 1st interlude opens with a playful counterpoint betweeen the Xylophone and the trumpet..and then between strings and xylophone..from here Anuradha takes over and sings Ikre Kabhi Talaaon Mein and the introduction of the alien note Prathi Madhyamam..[Its amazing to note interchange of alien ma notes used in both Kalyani and Shankarabarnam by Raja--song which immediately comes to mind is Vellai pura in Kalyani Ragam which adds the alien note Suddha Madhyamam to add beauty to the song..] and the beautiful super imposition at the end of the annu pallavi..

The singing portions are reversed between the singers in the charanam..and the song ends with singing of Jiske Sahare in chorus by both the singers..
A delightful melodius Sankarabharnam (C Major Scale) !!..This man just doesnt stop to amaze.. :)

Listening to a CD of Rajni hits. Which brings me to another topic which needs to be discussed more widely. The way Raja scores for the 'major' action heroes like Rajni, Chiranjeevi or Kamal (when he used to play the typical hero role). It is indeed stunning how Raja is able to balance his need for innovation / experimentation with the business needs of delivering 'hit' songs for these heroes. When you observe how other MDs have given songs for these mega action heroes and compare Raja's output, you can clearly see how Raja has innovated within this framework and provided top class music even in films which are mainly vehicles for the heroes to demonstrate their super-heroness. Think about 'pesa koodadhu', 'vaa vaa pakkam vaa', 'vellai pura onru' or the one that I am listening to now, 'sandana katre, senthamizh paate'. Very rarely would you find such songs in 'action' movies, in any language. But if you take Raja's songs with Rajni or Chiranjeevi you can find some outstanding experimental and innovative songs, which you can easily include in his top songs. Unlike other music directors who prefer to play safe when mega stars and action movies are concerned, Raja takes this as a challenge and delivers in a big way.

Evergreen song, what a song you have reminded me, thanks a lot Querida.

For that starting flute itself, we can give everything. None other than Shri K J Yesudas would have done justice to the song, especially when he starts 'Azhaikkiren Madhavan' and when he sings "Madhava, Keshava, Sridhara Om', even an atheist will surrender himself to God (IMHO).
Again the song structure does not fall into regular pallavi charanam structure, and it is required for this type of situation and Maestro utilizes it aptly. Especially when the lines "Kaadhil Naan Kethadhu" and "Guruve Saranam" are sung, it takes the song to different level.

The way Maestro builds up the tempo is amazing. Flute and violin are its best!

The song seems to have become popular again thanks to Mahaan and being performed with paraphernalia in Sangeetha Maha Yuddham by Prasanna recently.
Sri Raghavendra - a wholesome album for a devotional movie. Not just bhajans, keerthanais and the usual eyewash stuff. They gave a N/A for Annamaiya by Keeravani just for imagination-less remix and straight-play of keerthanais. Hmmm...

The movie starts of with the absolutely lovely Rama nAmam oru vEdamE - what a pleasnt, lovely song with Jesu aNNA's gambhiramAna entry the high point. Vani-ji gets a song of her type and excels. This is more up her line.

From there to aadal kalaiye to mazhaikkoru devanE to azhaikkiraan madhavan - what a treat. I have forgotten a couple of other songs, too. Plus one unpicturised one I think.

Yesterday a friend on twitter reminded me of the 'Katha Thudarunnu' song, "aaro paadunnu doori". Yesterday night was spent listening to this song. What a lovely melody. Sathyan somehow is able to get some superb numbers from Raja. Every film of his has one such classic ('Innate Chinta Vishayam' is probably an exception. No such classic in that movie, though songs are nice.) All other movies have such gems. Writing this I am reminded of the lovely 'Bhagyadevata' songs. Now to go and listen to them :)

Both songs are superb listens and they're set to Ananda Bharavi which I think is a sibling raag to Reeti gowlai.

MD Rajendran is a lyric writer. he's basically an announcer at AIR Thrissur, A self proclaimed IR Fan . Although he has written for many MD's, in terms of ratio, it has probably worked best with IR - almost all songs with IR have been Hits. He has done some work recently as a music director (For some devotional songs, though).

Very simple tune, lyrics are moving. For detractors like VM who keep saying that "instruments" are overpowering the words, This song from Raaja should be presented as a "case study". Agreed that language portion is conveyed by lyrics, but something surreal, and subtle can be even more effectively conveyed through music and Raaja does that with aplomb in this song. Each and every musical instrument, be it in the prelude or the interludes or the lines that run along with the singer singing aid in this and make the song that is reachable only to a "particular language audience" when viewed with the looking glass of lyrics to everyone with just ears and heart.
The throbbing of a rejected or "ignored" male in courtship is well brought out by lyrics, but lyrics convey the pain and to a point, even the magnitude, but is simply unable to recreate the swelling of heart that is usually found when a narration of such feelings by an affected person is speaking directly. These are usually areas reserved for "talkie" portion of a Shakespearean drama. When converted into a song it falls into its place perfectly in a movie of our times - only because Raaja creates punctuation of significant portions , a form of underscoring that adds on to what the lyric writer has supplied. I write this while thinking that this is Raaja trademark use of his "limitless" orchestral knowledge. Listen to the song and watch out for the violins repeating a brief flight - a crescendo right at the end of the either charanams.
Bear in mind that these violins have been silent throughout the charanams and from a pure orchestral perspective, they dont have to play a crescendo, but Raaja employs them for only the crescendo and to what effect? when their crescendo plays it so heightens the tension created by the singer and the beautiful verses as to make the song a pinnacle of songs of this genre. A fete no mere words with instruments playing a distant second fiddle can achieve and that is the power of Raaja compared to his contemporaries or rivals from any time frame.

Listening to 'chinna polike ledhu prema' after a long time. Just the prelude and pallavi are worth the money you pay for the CD. Especially the way the rhythm pattern moves in the pallavi is a lesson for everyone. Wonderfully done. Kunal has problems with Telugu but Sunidhi Chauhan nails it quite well.

Followed it with another Sunidhi song, this time from 'Paa', "hitchki hitchki". Another lovely song construction and very well delivered by Sunidhi. I think Raja can give her as many songs as he gives to Shreya. All the songs she has sung for Raja she has delivered perfectly.

Followed this up with a SPB singing competition wherein the kids sang rain songs. 'swathi chinuku sandya velalo' was sung and immediately Sreedevi dancing in the rain flashed in my minds eye. Not a bad way to end the day, I say :)

This may be quite old hat for many hubbers in this thread but I felt like I stumbled on a beautiful piece of divinity with my first listen of :notworthy: :musicsmile: "Nothing But Wind":notworthy: :musicsmile:

"Singing Self" was a beautiful introduction...I don't have words to describe it...the violins are exquisite the little modern piece thrown in surprised and then that too was swept up in the vibrancy of the piece.

The one piece that truly captured my heart, made me a rapt and thankful listener was "Composer's Breath" that familiarity was so precious (a Tamil radio station used the first minute of the beginning of this piece as transition music) it was as if going down a well-worn path but then being called back before getting to discover the rest of the way...and one day being able to follow the path fully, finding it leading to somewhere where it is that much more new and welcoming.

There were parts that were truly heart aching and others where again I am at a loss for words.

"Mozart, I Love You" a beautiful melding of western and eastern classical as far as I can tell..very energetic and vibrant to say the least.

"Nothing But Wind" is still too out there for me...I'm someone who doesn't much like abstract mixing in music hence the sound effects bewildered me.

"Song of Soul" is yet another that was familiar but still the modern touches were lost to me in the midst of the other pieces (maybe another time it will be more appealing to me). Needless to say the flute parts were well enjoyed.

It's one of the 'perfect 10' S Janaki chechi song all the way and Maestro knows it. This is what is called 'Singing'.

SJ starts with beautiful la la la humming which directly sets the mood of the song without going into the song. That's Chechi! What a start! There was an interview with MG sreekumar long ago where he said that Kanoor rajan was a big fan of raja.
Sreekumar also hinted that this Kanoor rajan got inspiration for this song from "Megham karukkayile" of Vaithehi kathirunthal !!

Thanks all, I have been taken the second time by another MD operating in the same idiom. What can I say , it has all the elements of IR's music, the harmony, the tabla+guitar chords driven charanams etc. Maybe I was too confident that I did not look for some counterpoints which IR seems to leave as a signature here and there in a song. "mazhai kaala mEgam onRu madi oonjaLadiyathu" - epitome of an effective popular music. Good balance of arrangements+ ok tune+ catchiness. Typical IR prelude with opportunity for a slow motion shot :-) . The arrangement is very interesting with 3 variations - just drums alone, drums + congas, drums+native drum (hand drum?). The native/ethnic sounding part seems to have been added/twist provided to make the very stylish drums+guitar driven song more down to earth or appealing to the local audience (the risque lyrics also should :-) ). SPB sings with aplomb, like a real hero singing.
This combination of drums is what I miss in recent outputs, compared to these type of songs .. the rhythm is not very imaginative.

Yup. It is by Chakravarthy. It was very popular in Andhra those days. IIRC it had Nageshwar Rao and Sreedevi dancing. The movie 'Premabishekam' was a major hit and that is what got copied in Tamil. Again, if my memory serves me right, Balaji must have been the producer of the Tamil movie. He was the one who used to do _only_ copied movies those time. My feeling is that Raja would not have been happy copying the song from Telugu and hence he was probably not considered for this movie.

No problem Ushaji, no need to feel sorry. All songs in this movie are special. That too, whenever I hear the songs from this film, first thing I remember is the Sathyan Anthikkad's first time experience with Maestro. That he planned for a week session with Maestro, booked room for 7 days, but astonished that Maestro completed everything in few hours. That too he composed 25 songs in 3-4 hours and Sathyan picked 5 of them. We know how the song are. I can't imagine such proficiency. Ganashyama is one among them, very popular for its poly rhythm structure. Thanks for your encouragement, but I am a novice to write about its technical details, I'll leave it to experts in our hub. Thanks a lot for sharing these extra-ordinary compositions!

Been a while i listened to these 2 songs - Varuthu varuthu and Rathiri neram from Brahmma....
Usage of instruments in both these 2 songs are mind-blowing. Esp the flute in both the songs.
All the different pieces - chours, flute all add more glitter to the song and on top of that amazing rendition by the 2 giants - SPB and SJ. In Rathiri neram in the first charanam SPB have a casual smile after - Thenaru idhuva..wow...both have really enjoyed when they sang these songs.

Watching 'Ariyudan Naan' program. This round is for people to sing the same song in different languages. One girl very wisely chose to sing, 'vizhiyile' in the pallavi, following it with the charanam of 'jotheyali' and finally blending into 'jaane do na'. She did it well. And what a song it is. Each one of the judges was excited. This song always makes you go, "Raja and no one else" :)

One thing that thoroughly impressed me (as it rightly did the judges too) is the quality of the orchestra! Especially the strings, WOW!

This used to be the sodhappal - almost always - on stage orchestras, even some of the popular ones of previous decades. Using keyboards to kill the spirit was a regular crime.

I'm extremely happy that such quality has happened at last with light music orchestras! (Possibly the presence of yesteryear movie artists in such teams - well, I think such teams are benefited by some who lost their jobs due to almost non-use of such section by many modern composers who save money with modern gadgets).

Sharath - a man of immense talents - even considered genius by some yesteryear DF-ers, has so much appreciation for IR! What nice remarks!

It was goosebumps when he asked the orchestra to repeat that fantastic interlude of 'chinnachchinna rOjAppoovE'!

Ilayaraja hits is nowadays common for any reality shows and that is the time when the "orchestra" team comes to the limelight...Its just not the singers,but the orchestra also gets their share of applause and this doesn't really happen for any other rounds!

Oru Kaaviyam Arangerum Neram from Aruvadai Naal sung by IR. It just made me stop whatever work I was doing, come to Hub and write about it.

What a soulful and at the same time soothing rendition by IR. The interludes are mesmerizing, IR's usage of veenai is always special to me. I like that percussion instrument that accompanies veenai for a brief moment. In the second interlude veenai gets replaced with Guitar and a heavenly chorus section. Man, how much creativity in those two interludes. I have to listen to the song 10 times atleast to write this as there are too many good things to savour in this song.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful song.

Suresh… lovely pick there in ‘Preminchi Pelladu’. The master, as always, deconstructs the local setting, takes its DNA, weaves his signature strands along with it and creates an ingenious species, that would still retain the flavour of the original genre/mileu. And as with many of his other Telugu albums, this one also wholly features the lethal Balu+Janaki combo. To add to their deadly skills and magical rapport, there’s also the home pitch advantage here! What else can it result in other than a homerun!
My pick from the album, for now, is Gopemma Chethulo. From an uber funky groove in the pallavi(which is driven by his trademark Mrudangam/Tabla chops), he transforms it into a delicate, silken charanam, that kinda follows a Q&A style between the two singers. Lovely!

The song that’s playing in my head as I write this is ‘yevevo kalalu’ from Jwala. This song re-iterates IR’s stand on the importance of the ‘emotions’ (er… peelings’mbangale) conveyed by a song and how it has to weigh over the display of technicality/wizardry in it. Those masterly syncopations, minute sangathis, etc he throws in, but envelopes it all within the element of ‘emotions’, that stands as the soul of the song. Another textbook demo on how a soulful song can be composed and made to be sung.

Rajkumarc... with you on that gem, Oru Kaviyam. ShAstAnga namaskaram to IR! (er.. does Surya have a patent on this?)

For someone who has been actively passive-hubbing (watching from outside) for more than a couple of years, I guess its but natural to pick up some traits from the only-hub-fossible lingo!

Currently listening to Kurangu Arattai (Monkey Chatter) from Mumbai Xpress. One of the peaks of IR’s post 2000 work; hell, I’d even go further and say it’s his best in this time period. In what he would make appear like simple ‘cartoonish’ music, the multiple layers he creates is quite baffling. Inter-weaving WCM & Jazz elements, incorporating scale changes, changing rhythm patterns; this one is, to me, a standout composition; a ‘never before, never after’ piece. The drumming is top notch, comprising of many interesting and at times, pretty perplexing, patterns. And if that wouldn’t suffice, the song shifts from aadi talam mid-way, goes to misra (7/8) and returns to aadi, that too with such subtlety, that its quite easy to miss the change in rhythm. Masterstroke!
(There are only two other songs I can think of where he conjures up similar stuff, straddling between varying thalams and nadais: Polla vinayen from Thiruvasagam and Aruna Kirana from Guru. Monstrosity I say!)

For someone who has been actively passive-hubbing (watching from outside) for more than a couple of years, I guess its but natural to pick up some traits from the only-hub-fossible lingo!

Currently listening to Kurangu Arattai (Monkey Chatter) from Mumbai Xpress. One of the peaks of IR’s post 2000 work; hell, I’d even go further and say it’s his best in this time period. In what he would make appear like simple ‘cartoonish’ music, the multiple layers he creates is quite baffling. +1. Same blood. The language is that of a veteran. Whether he was actively involved here earlier or has a blog of his own I do not know, but KV's writings are as good as music in K Vishwanath's films. So lets ask KV to keep them coming :)
