Given the this was a SPB thread I expected you here sooner :)

I don't think we can really discuss Raja SPB songs. There are so many of them in Tamil itself and the numbers increase drastically if you got to Telugu and Kannada. All that we can say is that SPB to Raja was the male equivalent of S Janaki. Someone who can translate his thoughts into song as close to what Raja had thought.

Maybe a nice thing would be to compare how SPB sang for other MDs who gave him more freedom when compared to Raja. Was SPB's contribution more in the songs of other MDs when compared to Raja's songs? That would be an interesting question to answer.

பாலா கிட்ட நான் needy ஆ இல்லைன்னா யார்கிட்ட இருக்க போறேன் ... so I am here . :)

Indeed Shri.Bala is a delight with every composer...from O.P.Nayyar, L.P, K.V.M, M.S.V, IR to A.R.R, Yuvan to current Dharan or Selvaganesh.
Yes ... improvising the tunes is a real treat to the soul.

With Shri.IR, he has sung some outstanding groovy compositions like jazz, rock, rock N roll, blues etc....of course when he worked with IR, it was kamal, mohan etc... arrived.

( late 70s M.G.R and Sivaji... their hindi remakes etc... not to mention veeram, gambeeram etc... sollindu... T.M.S Padinduyerundhaaru...Indeed T.M.S has bhaavam and very versatile for M.G.R, Sivaji, Jai shankar etc..
I can't cuddle with his voice.... taxing.

Few exceptions like mullilla roaja..... or enna solla....or inimai niraindha....or hare rama....couple of groovy compositions, Bala has sung for M.S.V.

He has sung some ethereal compositions for T.Rajender during 80s... they are my absolute favorites... T.R's poetry, music and Lover boy... HEAVENLY.

A.R.R with Bala has given some compositions like anjali anjali....,minnale minnale..., Indian, couple of songs from Gentleman etc...later we get to enjoy less Bala in A.R.R albums.

No big deal.

Ilayaraaja took care of our needs.

Vinatha,

Thanks for bringing up 'ponnula ponnula'. Been ages since I heard this song. The other two songs of "Chittukuruvi' get played often. SPB is enjoying himself here and the chorus is typical IR of those days.

Bala is simply unmatched.
my favorite time of the day is early morning exercise time around 5:30 a.m, especially during spring & summer times with Bala's vocals.
this morning woke up with poongkaatru un per solla....soft romantic voice of Bala cool to my ears... that silent early morning breezy moment...relieving and soothing effect reaches through my soul, he will stay with me whole day...AWESOME FRESHNESS!

yeko hosa aase....a lilting kannada composition pleasing aalap, tabala, sax, guitar, flute, veena orchestration..superb composition..from the GREAT MAN of Naan Adimai illai album.He is a genius from 80s with amazing compositions for Bala.

Bala is a gift to music composers from GOD.

Was listening to a song called 'Naa unnai niniachEn nee ennai niche' by the 'Greatest' SPB, I was stunned to see the MD was Shankar Ganesh, All this time I thought it was IR :shock:

Usha, every time I hear "irandum ondrodu ondru serndhadhu", the clockwork precision of every note in the composition and the synchronization with SPB, Chitra, guitar, drums, brass, violins never fail to amaze me

oh i loved this song .... the song would have a jazzy start with peculiar instrument music - and then starts with the amazing voice of SPB sir ....

the picturization should also be commended - with Rajini depicting all his actions thru acts ...

I cant remember the movie, another SS movie it had song by SPB ji called ' adi maasam kaathadika vaadi enna serthanika maane maanguyile'

SPB would have completley changed his voice and would sing in a 'comical' way. wow only this genius can do that :yes:

Since SS in involved in this discussion, I would like to mention

a song called 'Yen vanilE varum anbE vaa kannE vaa' from thambiku entha ooru , simply love this song!

the best song from this film is none other thaan
'Kaadhalin deepam ondru' :notworthy:

one must also remeber SPB music composition for 'Thudikum karangal'

'Santhanam poosa manjal nilavum ' wow wow wow, simply superb composition and singing , if one did not read the cd cover they would have assumed the 'MD' to be IR !

This song can be literally inserted "As-Is" in Rajinikanth's latest Endhiran...in my opinion.... might as well defeat other songs :P

SPB's creativity towards the end of the song is an absolute gem.. awesome.... he shoud have really enjoyed this song.whenever I hear thissong, I felt that the director would have wanted a song similar to 'Thatthom thalaangu thatthom' from VV.. (I guess VV released quite earlier than maappillai)... rythm is too good in both songs... :D

Thank you for reminding me of this gem of a song which got obscured by hits from the same film like "mounamaana neram" and "thakita thadhimi". Sorry akkA, that was just a remake song (original Telugu song was by another MD). No credits to S-G as they've just recorded it in Thamizh.

Agree with you on TR - his songs were original and immensely popular, sometimes eclipsing Raja songs even. However, he became so repetitive after early 80's and disappeared from the music scene.

It's from the movie 'vaNdikkAran magan', music by MSV. It has another superb SPB number "paduththAL, puraNdAL, uRakkamillai; :-)

I don't know the lyric of the song (except this one line). Also, since vaNdikkAran makan was a Karunanidhi movie, none of us boys looked favorably at that film, despite "Thamizh nAttu james bondu":-)

However, the beautiful percussion arrangement of that song still rings in my ears! 'படுத்தாள்' என்று பாலு பாடும் போது பின்னணியில் உருட்டி உருட்டி அடிக்கப்படும் தாளம் இனிமையோ இனிமை!

Between 1977 & 1980, there was nice competition between MSV & IR and we got some fantastic songs from both.

Digression

We used to play self-made "trade" game during holidays in grand parents' home. My cousin (4 years older) is the leader and he decides everything - what we like, listen to, talk favourably etc. The trade game was with old record book cover & cigarette boxes converted into hand-painted currency / cards etc.

My cousin fixed the prices - ulagam suRRum vAliban : Price 10000, Tax 1200 (the highest). vaNdikkAran magan: Price 1000, Tax 50 (the lowest, with some comical picture drawn by him)...he was a big MGR fanatic:-)

BTW, my cousin is also a huge fan of MSV & SPB (but his most fav were IR / KJY)...

That voice is Jikki (G Krishnaveni, w/o singer AM Raja).

The MD for the song was Shankar-Ganesh who was among the 5 MD's for the film 'kaNNil theriyum kathaikaL'. The producer was singer AL Raghavan, famous for the 'pAppA pAppA katha kELu, kAkka nariyin katha kELu' :-)

IR was one among the five and composed the SPB-SJ-PS song 'nAn oru ponnOviyam kaNdEn ethirE, iLamai, iLamai, inimai, idhu pudhumai'.

Most of us who visit tfmpage / hub frequently are familiar to the fact that IR wasn't the first to use SPB in TFM (or any FM). Specifically in TFM, SPB's first few songs were with MSV / KVM and for big stars Sivaji / MGR.

Despite that, SPB wasn't in the numero uno slot for a decade or so as TMS was the #1 choice for Sivaji / MGR. With the progressive kozha kozha of MGR's voice after being shot and also possibly because of the 'nAttukkAran' connection, KJY got to sing lot more songs than SPB during the 70's for MGR. (avaL oru navarasa nAdakam / idhazhe idhazhe thEn vENdum notwithstanding). In Sivaji's case, it was mostly TMS for Sivaji with SPB typically thrown in to sing for some son / younger brother kind of character in his movies in 70's.

Also, till the arrival of IR, MDs were not typically in-charge of the matters for biggie movies and SPB had to mostly sing for Sivakumar / Vijayakumar level of stars and often for the then-coming-up Kamal. Interestingly, the #1 MD, MSV, wasn't his biggest promoter but there were a variety of others who used him prominently - like V Kumar / Vijayabhaskar / Shankar Ganesh (before IR became #1 in my books, my most fav SPB song was 'unnai nAn pArththadhu veNNilA vELaiyil' by Shankar-Ganesh, movie pattikkAttu rAjA).

The reason for giving the background above is to emphasize how, in a way, the rise of IR helped SPB to get into that formidable position in TFM. The rise of Kamal / Rajini obviously helped but if one looks closely at SPB's curve, it was more of "IR erA" that helped his top position more than that of the rise of these two stars as some of the Mohan starrer songs had more phenomenal reach than that of KH-RK.

Starting today, I'm planning to post about one specific song each day, in the IR-SPB combo, in chronological order as much as possible. Obviously, it will be one of a personal experience rather than musical analysis. Music-savvy hubbers are welcome to add further details as much as possible to the song I pick each day.

I'm sure I can go on for 100's of days :-)

When listening to this sweetie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7vP6UW7FK8) this morning after many years, I realize that this is going to be a very sweet and nostalgic trip for me :-)

Since IR started with a kiLi, the sentiment-driven TF launched him for another kiLi movie, this one named after the famous gauravam song that reverberated through out TN on loudspeakers with a famous Sivaji dialog prelude. (கிளிக்கு ரெக்க மொளச்சிடுத்து... ஆத்த விட்டுப் பறந்து போயிடுத்து).

Perhaps the first released song in IR-SPB combo, with the addition of Janaki ammA (or should I call "aththai" since PS is HMV for me). So early in IR's career he laid the seed for the combo that'll drive people crazy for decades, i.e. the unbeatable top combo ever in TFM of "IR-SPB-SJ"!

Both singers bring in such a feeling of closeness in this song and IR does a very controlled aggression with lead guitar-cymbal-tabla accompaniment to a sweet melody. As one can hear, while SPB still has his boyishness (well, he has it even today), there're signs of "maturity" developing in this song :wink:

I don't remember associating this song with IR when it was on radio during my school days but enjoyed it thoroughly then. (It was years later that I got into this habit of asking whether it's an IR song or not).

A superb writeup about SPB's rise in TFM and from my limited knowledge of TFM of those days, I will agree with you. The analysis is spot on. I would personally say that SPB along with Raja was able to overcome the influence of TMS and leave his stamp behind. In Telugu it is a bit more complicated. To be honest, I would say even today the shadow of Ghantasala looms large and SPB has not been able to erase that as he was able to come out of TMS's shadow in Tamil film music. (Something like how Kannadasan's personality looms large over any other lyricist.) To certain extent that would also be because the Telugu music directors of late 70s and 80s were not a match for the masters of 60s and Raja did not do as many films in Telugu as he did in Tamil.

App - I thought Oru Naal Unnodu Oru Naal from Uravaadum Nenjam was the first song SPB sang for IR. So, Naan Pesa Vanthen got released first? Looking forward to your posts about more SPB songs.

Suresh - Who else was the popular male singer in Telugu film music other than SPB in 70s, 80s? Did KJY or PJ sing lot of songs in Telugu?

There was really no great competition for SPB once Gantasala passed away. The one person who was used often by the MDs was Ramakrishna, a clone of Gantasala. There was also a singer called Ramesh, who had a few good songs. Some other came in once a while but it was SPB show all the way. Jesudas has sung some songs but not many. I don't know if PJ has sung songs in Telugu. Maybe in some dubbing movies but not sure.

Wasn't SPB a star singer in TFM before he became popular in TeFM (largely due to Ayiram Nilave Vaa)? It is sad IR had to use substitutes like Mano/MV in the 90s because TeFM kept SPB so busy.
Around that time SPB had some throat problems(blisters due to smoking and incessant singing in 3+languages) too and had to cut down on his singing - a reason why "track" singers became main singers in that period. I dont think Raaja purposefully sidelined anybody from what they do their best. Let us also bear in mind that voices like SPB, KJY and MV are special, close to late 80s and 90s, exectations were always there to use their voices mainly for reigning stars (exception being Kamal who had hit the jackpot with his "track song" Raja kaiyya vecha - Anyone who had echo cassettes of Apoorva SagodharargaL would have had the pleasure of hearing SPB sing Raaja Kaiyya vechchaa).

SPB was not a 'star singer' even after 'aayiram nilave vaa', as app_eng has mentioned. He came up faster in Telugu and was a well know singer in Telugu singing for Sathyam, Chakravarthy, Ramesh Naidu, KVM et al. In Tamil his growth was slower as app_eng pointed out since the reigning stars like MGR and Sivaji used TMS and Jesudas more.

thanks IR, if we come home with tired or sober mood or joyous, romantic mood, I have gazillion compositions to cuddle with S.P.B.

anyway...

IR vs TMS, their attitude or misunderstanding etc... kahanies attract no interest from some of us.

eppadi veeram, gambeeram etc... sollindu MGR, Sivaji etc... kku TMS was used by previous generation MDs, adhey maadhiri

next generation of actors like Mohan, Kamal etc... arrived now, S.P.B served them with boyish charm and energy. bubbly, romantic, sexy dulcet feeling etc..

Shri.IR did not use TMS. time to move on...... avvalavudhaan.

But he used Susheela for many many songs though her number of songs are less than Janu.

Even Vani too sang less number of songs but Shri.IR gave Vani some of the finest and versatile compositions from Classical, folk to rock & roll.

You have more than once announced your hatred for Raja. app_eng is trying to give us an history of Tamil Film Music during the mid and late 70s. In case you think you have an alternate history to write, which puts Raja as the villain please go ahead, open a new thread and put in your perspective. That would be much better than coming in here with snide remarks, which trivialize what app_eng has setup to do. You can look at past events in multiple ways and app_eng is looking at it from a music lover's perspective. And that is a perspective lot of people here want. As I said earlier, either you come up with your own perspective of things and put up a serious post on it or watch from the sidelines. Your snide remarks are becoming rather tiring here.

Please correct me wherever I stray due to my bias or misinformation when facts tell otherwise.

I'm not really that much qualified and was also heavily influenced by peer opinions, tea stall conversations etc during my boyhood rather than reading the likes of film news Ananthan :-) I try to present info without any deliberate twist based on what I read from Manisekaran / dhool Saravanan and other reasonably reliable internet resources. However, my so called "memory" from what I read in AV / Kumudam of school days could mess up things and would definitely appreciate kuttu's.

It's not clear which one came first - uRavAdum nenjam or PV kiLi (there's even an old thread in the TFM-DF discussing about this). That's why my "perhaps" remark there :-) However, many web resources confirm that both these movies are 1976-ers as AnnakkiLi was. From my village kOlAmbi speaker memory, after machchAna it was kEttELe ingE that was immensely popular. nAn pEsa / kola kolayA munthirikkA / oru nAL unnOdu / nenachchathellAm were all "radio-only" hits.

Whenever I call "air time" please take it as "இலங்கை ஒலிபரப்பு கூட்டு ஸ்தாபனம் தமிழ் சேவை 2" for 90% of the time and the rest Trichy / Coimbatore AIR stations. Vividh Bharathy wasn't powerful enough to reach my village and so were other AIR stations.

While it's possibly a factor in the decline of TMS from TFM scene, his comments on IR & the corresponding irritation by IR was by no means the main one.

Actually, TMS's irritation towards IR was more out of his own decline, IMO. There were many reasons:

1. MGR quit acting after becoming CM in 1977. Though he threatened to return to films after the loss in parliament elections, he couldn't do it as the people were so scared of his return and they voted him back to power in the assembly elections :wink:
2. Sivaji continued to patronise TMS, even neglecting IR for a couple of years. Possibly with an eye to promoting Prabhu, he went back to IR in veLLai rOjA and MV started singing for him, alas the lone supporter of TMS too got tired of him.
3. Rise of Kamal and Rajini who chose SPB as their main voice and MV as viable alternate. Take the case of ninaiththAlE inikkum, the musical magnum opus of MSV - TMS's buddy buddy - with > 10 songs and no TMS.
4. Arrival of directors like BR / Mahendran who preferred either soft or rustic singers and not gambeeram or sophistication that were USPs of TMS.
5. Age factor - "the old order changeth yielding place to new" thingy.

Finally, the most important factor: people liked more of non-TMS songs. Those were much bigger hits than any TMS number coming out :-)

Another IR-SPB-SJ combo song that was such a huge favourite of me during school days. For most hubbers, the mention of "உளியின் ஓசை" could possibly bring horror figures of Sarath Babu in a local DMK meeting pandhal as Rajaraja chozhan. (Or, if positive feelings, "அபிநயம் காட்டுகின்ற ஆரணங்கே" by the classical female singers.)

For me, though, it brings the memory of crafts classes in school where giving the uLi in a wrong way to carpentry master will get a beating with the back of the uLi :-) The good part is decent quality furniture was made by students that got auctioned every year and one such bench made into our home that served as the sole percussion instrument for years!

This song and many themmAngu songs of IR had been enjoyed by me and my younger bro with that bench thALams :-)

SPB & SJ both enjoy with kuRumbu here and IR getting lovely beats for a catchy tune. IIRC, Usha chechi was telling that this song was banned by AIR. However, I had no problem as AIR had only very limited air time for TFM anyways and most of the time they were airing boring songs. IOKS, OTOH, was our darling and we developed so much of love for Abdul Hameed, K S Raja, Mayilvahanam Sarvanadha, Rajeshwari Shanmugam and were locked to that station for most part of late 70's and early 80's!

ஆரம்பத்தில் ஒரு சில பாடல்களை ராஜா இசையில் பாடி வந்தவர் சௌந்தராஜன்...கொஞ்ச நாட்களுக்கு பிறகு முழுவதும் காணாமல் போனது என்னைப் போன்ற குரல் ரசிகர்களுக்கு வருத்தமே. ஆனால் காலத்தின் கட்டாயத்தால் இப்படி அலைகளால் அடித்துச் செல்லப்படும் நல்ல விஷயங்கள் இயல்பான ஒன்றே. காலச் சக்கரத்தில் கொஞ்சம் பின்னோக்கி சென்றால் சௌந்தராஜன் பாடுவதற்கு முன்பு பாடி வந்த யாரேனும் ஒரு பிரபல பாடகரின் இடத்தை அவரும் நிரப்பி இருக்கலாம். எம்.எஸ்.வியோடு நல்ல நட்பு இருந்தும், இளமை ஊஞ்சலாடுகிறது படத்திற்காக இளமை(இளைய)ராஜாவை நோக்கி ஓடி வந்தவர் ஸ்ரீதர். பி.சுசிலா இந்த விஷயத்தில் கொஞ்சம் அதிர்ஷ்டசாலி. சௌந்தராஜன் போல முழுவதும் புறக்கணிக்கப் படவில்லை. புதியன புகுதலும் பழையன கழிதலும் - மாற்றவே முடியாது. இதில் ராஜா, பாலு, யேசுதாஸ், ம.வாசுதேவன், ஜானகி, சித்ரா-வும் அடக்கம் . இனி ராஜா என்ன வழங்கப் போகிறார் என எதிர்பார்க்காமல் இதுவரை ராஜா இசையமைத்த பாடல்களையே தொடர்ந்து கேட்டு இன்புறலாம் என்ற மனப்பான்மை சௌந்தராஜன் குரலில் வந்த பாடல்களுக்கும் பொருந்தும். அந்திமக் காலத்தில் சௌந்தராஜன் பாடிய பாடல்கள் மிகவும் பிரபலம். ராஜேந்தர் இசையில் "அமைதிக்கு பெயர்தான் சாந்தி", "நான் ஒரு ராசியில்லா ராஜா", "என் கதை முடியும் நேரம் இது!", "நூலுமில்லை வாலுமில்லை" இந்த நான்கு பாடல்களும் தமிழ்நாட்டில் ஒலிக்காத இடமேயில்லை எனச் சொல்லலாம். One of the all-time-great songs of Raja! Ofcourse with SPB-SJ combo!

Interestingly, I don't remember associating this with Raja when this song became close to my heart during school days. I was possibly in the 8th grade when this song appeared and made such strong emotional connections with me. Actually the interludes threw me into some different world then! இந்த "இனம் புரியாத உணர்வுகள்" அப்படீன்னு சொல்லுவாங்களே, அந்த வகை:wink:

It was a habit among village school boys to tell movie stories to others (me mostly the listener category) and some had the habit of adding BGM :lol2: So, it wasn't uncommon for boys to "sing the BGM" using mouth and I can't recall how many times both my mind & tongue replayed this song's three sweet interludes! A lot of emotional connection there! These interludes have the power of mesmerising one's mind, putting it in different places / situations and playing strong games with feelings!

Add to them a very sweet melody in both pallavi and saraNam, the tik-tik-tik sound giving an unique identity and the youthful voices of SPB/SJ. SPB must have giggled when the last saraNam has the line "ஆயிரம் நிலவைப்பார்த்திருப்போம்".

If this had indeed been the first song in IR's composition for SPB, then it's a second case of singing the thousand moon phrase in his first song with a great composer. Let's wish him a minimum of 1000 full moons!
