(மீண்டும் ஒரு காதல் கதை, 1985 , ஜானகியுடன்) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2024'&lang=en)

Perfect song for the morning of this mildly cold fall weather.

>75% of the leaves gone and trees looking "kuchchi-kuchchiyA", mild deposit of dew on the vehicles parked in the street and a smooth ride to work. Since a call got cancelled at 7 AM, spent a few minutes standing by the large glass windows by the lakeside at the workplace to thoroughly enjoy the scene.

Being in 0'th floor, which is in the same level as the beautiful lake gives such a panoramic view of the woods & a lone building on the other side of the lake. Preparing for the winter (possibly for the long flights ahead), there are 100's of geese / swans on the surface of the lake, practically non-moving like sculptures and making the whole view look like an oil painting. With daylight yet to arrive in full, this partly-dark scene is an artwork of class - better than what any master artist had ever painted!

The Malayalee girl in the next aisle crossed me smiling and making an appreciative remark on the view and I got reminded of the Pratap Pothen stuff that needs to be posted today...and here I'm listening to the song and typing :-) What a sweet number that goes so smoothly along the wonderful morning. The song of the dawn for sure, composed with great care and perfectly executed by the sweet SPB-SJ pair! Possibly a new toy that rAsA got at that time got deployed in the prelude (some sound from a Korg?). The second interlude is definitely an artwork of class and difficult to express the appreciation in words!

IIRC, this was the directorial debut of PP about whose combo with IR I've frequently posted on the hub. Both as an actor & director. moodupani, panneer pushpangaL, nenjaththaikkiLLAthE, eeravizhikkAviyangaL, veRRi vizhA, MDM...All sophisticated scores. While MOKK is nowhere near any of those biggie albums, this song has the same level of class! I'm not sure whether the PP-R marriage was prior to this movie or after. Either way, both have acted in this movie as those lacking mana vaLarchchi and he got an award from Zail Singh (NA?) as per the picture at Wikipedia. Though I've totally forgotten the on-screen stuff of EVK, one of our hubbers recently posted a youtube of a song from that and was amused to see that it had the PP-R pair. Well, they made a good combo, IMO. Both appear to be extremely intelligent people.

I don't remember whether we paid a lot of attention to this song at the time of arrival - despite the decent air time it got. I've actually heard it more often in later years, mostly during Palakkad - Coimbatore early days. That way, not so much of nostalgia attached to the song and readers are saved:-)

App, love the way you bring up different and contrasting scenarios and memories to tag along with different songs. Lovely.

I had a similar experience in Chennai recently in a local bus travel. Here, in Bangalore, its normal for a conductor to walk up to you in a bus, however empty of full it is and issue the ticket. Grown up with this habit, when I was in Chennai some months back, I boarded a bus and took the seat right next to the driver's (my favorite seat always, but never get to travel in this seat in Karnataka because the first half of the bus is reserved for ladies, unlike in TN where, strange enough and beyond my comprehension, the rear half of the bus, where the ride generally tends to get bumpy, is reserved for them). I saw the conductor sitting towards the rear of the bus and there were only a handful of passengers. 'Stops' started going by and there was no sign of him coming to the front. I kept glancing towards him every now and then and he would just wear a plain look on his face. Almost 7 stops later, he walked up to the front, and surprise surprise, angrily questioned me if I was trying to travel 'without' (I even had the 'change' ready in my hand all the time). Then the driver (who had been silently going about his business till then) joined the party and they happily started verbally abusing and accusing me being a cheat. 'You gotta come and get your ticket, geddit?' he said finally and only then did I understand. I chose to remain silent after buying the ticket and sat in the same seat before alighting the bus at the destination. My hand involuntarily moved up and pointed a middle finger at the bus as it moved past me. Culture shock'mbaangale, idhu dhaano?

And as unexpected as this confrontation, was the rhythm in Kavidhai Paadu, when I heard it the first time. Never heard anything like this before (where he suddenly introduces a loud, for IR's rhythm standards, kerala chendai like beat in the pallavi). Neither can I think of any other song after this where he has tried somthing similar. I still don't know if it goes along with the flow of the song, but it surely gives the song an identity.

Another song with similar rhythm, KV, would be "hello guru premakosameloi jeevitham" from Nirnayam. There is a tamil dubbed version in thiraipaadal as well.

Here, in Bangalore, its normal for a conductor to walk up to you in a bus

I think it is that way in most places of TN / Kerala as well with Chennai being the glorious exception. My first-time experience in Pallavan was also one of surprise - of waiting for conductor. However, as my place of getting down came, I asked the next standing passenger who explained me the "Madras system" and I walked up to the "conductor seat" to pay :-)

Coimbatore / Kerala too used to have the "front half for women" system...

Another kosuRu info - in US buses, driver is also conductor and money goes into a machine mounted near him...and every one enters thru the front (and mostly exit thru the front except bigger stops where he opens the door in the middle)...

In contrast, Kerala used to have 2 conductors :-) (i.e. in the private buses, not the yAnai mark KSRTC)

One will collect money (most private buses don't give paper tickets, simbly collect dough into the pouch, often they give "concessions" on the fly, no change no problem, sometimes no money also no problem, students used to give only 10 paisA etc ) while the other guy, called "kizhi or kiLi" prompts the stop and go

App, even in Trichy the private route buses (e.g. Trichy-Tanjore) in the 90s/00s had two conductors. Both of them carry the pouch and in fact they kizhichify tickets religiously. No cheating business. And the vandi moves only when both give the go ahead with their whistles..

Yes, Nerd...even the private-run town bus to our village had two conductors (too much stops / too much crowd / one could not handle).

But the Kerala thing is different, only one collects money. The other one typically stands in the padikkattu and only prompts :-)

(செல்வி, 1985 , ஜானகியுடன்) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3258'&lang=en)

Classic SPB-SJ duet that found its place in my first recorded cassette! Phenomenal prelude and sweet interludes (though I wished 'en iniya pon nilAvE' / 'idhu oru nilAkkAlam' style chorus were used, instead of the nAdan style chorus). SPB-SJ thoroughly enjoyed singing this in a dreamy way and the song creates such dreamy images in one's mind on each listen!

Like already discussed in this thread recently (and youtube proof given), literal dogs romanced (or did circus stuff) on screen for this gem of a song  K Natraj must have been in a terrible mood to have it that way. (Or possibly mistaken in the notion that it was an innovation / being funny etc).

However, one interesting thing about this song for me was the instrumental version that was available. Recording centers were making use of that piece as the "end of cassette filler" and one could hear the piece every now and then on buses. I remember recording that in one of my cassettes and enjoying it those days. It wasn't a karoke but replaced the human voices with (possibly) accordian. Possibly the only such piece ever to have come out on a rAsA album. It retained the "track" ditto as in the song, including the chorus in interludes.

I used to always draw parallel with the MSV disk in our school that featured very similar rendering of the mellisai mannar's tracks - with lead vocals replaced by accordian / harmonium kind of instrument. One song that still rings in my ears is 'viLakkERRi vaikkiREn vidiya vidiya eriyattum' of soothAttam. That MSV instrumental track was also used by AIR every now and then as a filler between programs when there was a gap of a minute or so (e.g. AIR Trichy waiting for Chennai anjal / Delhi anjal etc). However, I also remember 'kAdhOdu dhAn nAn pEsuvEn' from that disk  Due to that, prior to tfmpage DF-ing, I was under the impression that the veLLi vizha song was by MSV. (The composer is V Kumar, BTW).

That way, though I liked the Selvi instrumental, I always wished it had some other instrument replacing the lead vocals (like lead guitar or flute or Kunnakkudi style violin) and not the same one used for viLakkERRi & kAdhOdu dhAn...

Sweet song with an excellent strings prelude! Signature rAsA tablA rhythm combined with chords & bass and melodious SPB/SJ. Evergreen number and can be thorougly enjoyed during "before-sleep-headphone-times".

I can't associate this song with college days at all - possibly came during the later half of 1985 when there was relatively less focus on movies but more with project / interviews and such stuff. This one goes along with the 'nilavonRu kaNdEn' kinds where more memory is associated with CBE / Pollachi than Trichy. Very specifically the private buses that ran between Pollachi & Cbe with nice sound systems, played at tasteful volume / bass / treble setting.

Those who know about the geography around Palakkad may wonder why would anyone travel between Pollachi & Coimbatore if the start or destination involves Palakkad  (For those uninitiated ones : these three towns roughly form an equilateral triangle, Cbe north, Pollachi south and Palakkad west of both, so to go from Palakkad to Pollachi via Coimbatore is funny).

There were reasons partly related to buses again :-)

The right way to go from Palakkad to mid / south TN should be like Palakkad to Pollachi to Pazhani. (The corresponding rail road was meter gauge as far as I could remember with just one or two passenger trains a day). While both Palakkad and Pollachi are big towns, the travellers between these two were quite limited and so were the number of buses. That apart, except the few gov buses that ran between these two, others stopped at every village, even taking extra circuitry routes (e.g. one with Meenakshi puram, the railway station used in a couple of TFs, possibly by the Fazil group) - making the 40 KM travel take > 2 hours. Also the "last-bus" issue.

So, my typical travel was to catch a CBE bus standing at "kootuppAtha" of Palakkad (means "junction", where the Cbe & Pollachi roads merged together and my place of work was located as well). Didn't have to even go to Palakkad town or bus terminus. These came at 15 min interval and reached Ukkadam (Cbe) in 45 min or so. Add another hour, you're at Pollachi. Plus, you get great music on Cbe-Pollachi buses while Palakkad-Pollachi buses, regardless of fast gov ones or slow privates, were without music.

Then there was this "last bus" problem for my village at destination (until I got my own transportation / parents moved to town) and so to circumvent that I typically indulged in starting late and watching the 2nd show at Coimbatore. Means, starting from Cbe at 1 AM and add 4 hours travel, right in time for the first town bus in the morning :-) Thus went my monthly home-travel routine.

Those trips were wonderful musical experiences as the whole route had bus crews which typically had fantastic taste for music. (i.e. that jelled with mine).

'kaNNil enna kAr kAlam' - the song from a BM movie with Rajinikanth / Madhavi brings me those night travels afresh in mind!

Other than that, I hardly know anything about this movie

Don't even know the story or how it fared in the BO...

Some more bus talk...

One should travel inside other states (means not the main cities but small towns / villages) during 80's / 90's to appreciate the phenomenally advanced state that TN was!

Even a relatively better-off-in-roads Kerala didn't have that many bus services to interiors and the less talked about the condition of the buses the better. And, yes, except a few private buses in the Palakkad area, none had music in the state.

AP interiors had hardly any private bus coverage and the same seemed to be the case as much as I noticed during my travails in KA. Only those APSTC or KSRTC ones that were infrequent and definitely non-meesical. There was this Birla Cements township in a place called "Ammasandra" near Shimoga where I had to go thrice. The only possible mode of transport was by train to a nearby small station and request for pick-up / drop by the customer  (They more than compensated for the trouble with the superb guest house, phenomenal food -the best pulkA I ever had - etc, but posting here just to highlight the lack of buses to even civilized places not far from Bangalore, in 90's). The experiece was much worse in WB interiors. While great in train services, I'm not sure even MH can boast of great bus network.

That way TN's bus network is terrific! What makes TN buses even more special is the music! I'll credit the IR-mania as the sole reason for pAttu in patti-thotti buses thru-out TN. Why, even the gov run buses had to install music players at one point of time to match competition. I think Cheran, the most enterprising gov transport IMO, was the first to do that. Possibly they imported 1000's of semi-knocked-down (SKD) kits themselves and assembled with Cheran brand for their buses! Other gov buses were relatively slower per my observation. (Ofcourse, now there are no chEra / chOzha / pANdiyarkaL...ellAm TNSTC AyippOchchu).

Music @ buses, music @ tea-stalls & the now-disappeared-but-lasted-at-least-a-decade "recording centers" were three significant cultural impacts that rAsA had on TN! These "cutural impacts" I had seen unfolded right in front of my eyes and can shout for in any platform as significant rAsA-effects!

Btw some technical info of the Bass and rhythm of Ilamanadhil posted by Eddie Dinesh on FB.
Ilamanadhu is a great find...a deadly exercise for any bassie. Hope you folks noticed that the song is in 3/4, while the bass track in the Pallavi is set to 4/4 time signature. So, in the Pallavi its 4/4 bass over 3/4 rhythm structure.

To be very precise, the entire song is in 3/4 with tempo measure of 260. In the pallavi bass is set to 4/4 with a tempo measure of 175. Sheer brilliance of IR. For the rest of the song the bass plays in 3/4, but only in the Pallavi you come across this brilliant mathemagic. :-)

App,

Your bus journeys have been nicely explained and very much enjoyable.

Now coming to the Film UKNV, some basic facts that you said you are unaware of. The film was released in June 1985. IIRC it came exactly 2 weeks after Andha Oru Nimidam and the big clash between the two fizzled out and Thendrale Ennai Thodu released in between these two became a super hit.

The movie talked about the injustice meted out to one innocent man by the police department and YG Mahendra who acted as the brother of Madhavi played the innocent character and again if my memory serves me right some forest range issues will form the backdrop pf the story. BM had used this movie to let out his personal anger. During the period of late 84, Balu Mahendra was arrested for some passport related issues and the claim from the police side was that he had indulged in some fraudulent activities. It seems he was tortured like anything both physically and mentally and he used this movie to let out his anger. But he could not do it beyond a point as the same powers to be were there in 1985 also. So BM tweaked the story and went to Malayalam and made Yathra with Mammootty where he had shown the police excesses as well as he wanted.

As I mentioned earlier, movie failed commercially with songs being the exception. Great song with haunting lyrics penned by Vairamuthu and especially the lines

நான் உறங்கும் நாள் வேண்டும்

சாய்ந்து கொள்ள தோள் வேண்டும்

என் கண்ணில் நீர் வேண்டும்

சுகமாக அழ வேண்டும்

will make you feel the sadness that it intends to convey.

Kerala may have had more 'chAyakkadai' (tea stalls) but not many had box-speaker-music, not even cassette player stuff - mostly azhudhu vadiyuRa rAdio music only -
'mAnasa mainE varooo'

Also, one would see KJY / KSC / LM pics typically on music shops in KL (even in 80's / 90's the recording center culture wasn't there), who were primarily counted responsible for sale at those counters and not the composers...contrast that with TN of 80's

You have brought a very important point here... we all want to identify or highlight just "our" people. In youtube many Malayalam songs are simply highlighting KJY, Telugu songs highlighting SPB, Kannada songs highlighting Rajkumar and Tamil songs highlighting IR or ARR. If you read the comments for those songs.. you can see more than 70% folks are again talking about the greatness of KJY in Malayalam, SPB in Telugu, etc. etc.,

You have brought a very important point here... we all want to identify or highlight just "our" people. In youtube many Malayalam songs are simply highlighting KJY, Telugu songs highlighting SPB, Kannada songs highlighting Rajkumar and Tamil songs highlighting IR or ARR. If you read the comments for those songs.. you can see more than 70% folks are again talking about the greatness of KJY in Malayalam, SPB in Telugu, etc. etc.,

I think it is just human nature.

However, LM wasn't a malayALi :-)

Likewise, there weren't pictures of Raveendran master (or such genius composers of prior era)...

This 'namma ALu' business had never been applicable to TN, as can be seen by the all-time #1 idol there, ippOkkooda kaNNa moodikkittu retta ilaikku vote pOdaRavanga irukkAnga

I strongly feel the IR pictures correpond to the focus he brought in TN to the role of MD and it definitely had nothing to do with his TN origins.

Interestingly, the four most popular composers of TFM had some closeness / connection to Kerala (KVM is from Kumari district, close to Kerala and there're people in Nagerkoil who feel they should have been part of Kerala & follow 'nAnjil nAttu marumakkaL vazhi mAnmiyam' culture ; MSV's home village, elappuLLi / pArA, is between Pollachi & Palakkad and could have been part of Madras state prior to independence but now part of Kerala; IR's home place is close to the border and his brother's communist roots / roaming around in Kerala is quite noteworthy with rAsA being a part of that team; ARR's dad was a MFM composer)...

Post the pic...or else it did not happen :poke:

#203 என் அன்பே அன்பே என் மனம் உன் வசம்
(உன்னைத்தேடி வருவேன், 1985 , ஜானகியுடன்) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3795'&lang=en)

Another Sridhar movie that came and gone during the final year of college. I clearly remember watching this movie in the Ramba / Oorvasi complex near Kaveri river in Trichy but can't recall any storyline. Suresh was the hero and I think there was a song with him in shorts on the beach. That's about the only thing I remember about the movie apart from this nice song and the sweet 'oru nALil' song (SJ with Ramesh).

This song is a guitar sweetie with IR's signature rhythm. The prelude could potentially confuse us with a later day song by the same pair (adhikAlai, subha vELai). Yes, both songs share the rhythm arrangement as well. However, this was the first to come and no question about the musical ears of Sridhar :-) It had its radio / bus / teakkadai time disregarding the movie's fate.

At best, I recall some study-holidays with this song. Well, I need to record about 2 important things of the campus in this thread before we jump to next year, the first one in this post and the second in the next post.

Though we had the kaLLichchottu tea at 3 PM in the mess (never missed to go on time, especially in the study hols - after playing carrom for hours), there wasn't any snack served ever. So, on some days some seriously-studying wingmates used to feel "brain-tired" and ask for company to walk to cafeteria. Though my study days were typically only 15 - exactly 15 - per semester and not too much serious study anyways, for enjoying the company and the walk I used to be part of the gang going to cafe.

Well, there was another tasty reason too.

Though none of us ever liked anything in the cafe, there was just one exception and it wasn't available at all times and all days. Just some evenings and it was hit / miss. Still, worth trying for the fantastic taste (mouth waters as I write). The onion bajji :-) hA! The thin sliced round onion covered with the not-so-thick coating of kadalai mAvu deep fried, with that orange brown color (possibly kEsari powder added), served hot - the money (or the previously bought coupon books) in our packets were the only limiting factor for the quantity we could have of that delicacy! Greatly thrilled with the taste but never feeling filled we used to leave the cafe! (This dish is one of my regular "nachcharippu" at home as well).

Borrowing from an old poet (who praised pAri vaLLal), there are a few other tasty things besides rAsA songs in the world too :-)

The guitar / synth special ENdiyammA (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3800'&lang=en) from this movie didn't get much popularity as per my memory. Same was the case with the trumpet delight valiya vantha vanithAmaNi (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3799'&lang=en).

I don't know how these IR / SPB specials from a Sridhar movie went without much notice...excess production by IR must be one explanation...

I want to finish 1985 with Idhayakkovil as I recognize listening to the film's songs mostly only in the next year and I can't associate any campus memory with those songs at all. So, looking around for other movies during this year brings some names from thiraippAdal which are incorrect IMO.

For e.g. Vikram is listed as 1985. No way. I remember seeing trailer of this at Geethalaya theater near Cbe bus stand in 1986. Possibly the album came in 1985 but the movie a clear 1986-er.

Though I have the same doubt for the Jappanil KR movie, since that doesn't associate any personal memory anyways, I'll go ahead documenting the SPB songs in that in the coming posts and do some blA-blA about campus thingies...

#204 வாய்யா வாய்யா போய்யா போய்யா
(ஜப்பானில் கல்யாணராமன், 1985 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1278'&lang=en)

Interesting song for Panju's movie where SPB sings in a different voice - but unfortunately fails to impress like MV in the case of the original KR's 'AhA vandhuruchchu'. I love the melody change for 'vEtti varinju kattu' which is definitely catchier than the first line. This song did enjoy some popularity in radio and elsewhere but I cannot recall whether any of my associates feverishly went to recording centers to record it :-( Though limited, whatever popularity the song got had everything to do with Kamal and not otherwise IMO.

I cannot understand why IR / Panju / Kamal / Director chose not to have MV in this album at all when they had such a big success with him in the original KR. It's fine if they had to use SPB for the modern Kamal who romances Radha but what about the pallu Kamal? One of those puriyAdha puthir questions

Well, jumping back to my campus stuff, I need to mention the second thing - rather second "set of delicacies" in this post. These again prompted walks from hostel, classes, playgrounds etc direct to the shopping area of the campus where the Juice Center was located:-) And this was available late at night as well and it wasn't uncommon to pay a visit after 9.

Mess never went beyond lime juice or Kissan Orange Squash typically. Even during the "feast" days, the max they offered was a grape juice. (We used to grab the emptied kissan bottles for our room water supplies as mineral water / PET bottle business was still not a big thing yet). In addition, there was never any "fruits" part of the menu. (One thing that I missed during hostel days was the seemingly-unlimited supply of mangoes that we had at home during summer, being in a village, or the extremely tasty fruits from siRumalai that were available plenty those days in the town market - bananas, jack fruit, pineapple - name anything, the siRumalai version was the tastiest in the world for me, like siRuvANi water for Cbe fellows).

So, the solution at campus was the juice shop which was phenomenally economical, accepted "tokens" that could be bought in the hostel office (and show up in the mess bill, so no need to spend cash). We never had a taste for typical bottle drinks (remember no Coke in India those days) except Parnar mango and Aavin flavoured milk. (Oh, once again reminded of the Aavin milk price thingy going on in TN at present).

So, while we treated ourselves with all kinds of fresh, mixie-d fruit juices from that place, the shop keeper developed his own versions of treats well. He mixed the flavoured milk with juices and created "shake" versions that were very popular.

So, like the hot vengAyA bajji, the other set of items on the top of our list were the ice-chilly grape-shake and banana-shake from the cafe :-)

I could not compelte this post earlier....regarding the 200th post being Adhikalai Nerame from MOKK, it must be mentioned that MOKK came in Feb 1985 two months prior to UdhayaGeetham, so chronologically speaking, that song should have featured before the songs from Udhaya Geetham. But of course, order of songs doesnt matter.

By the way, 4 years ago for thanksgiving, being someone who doesnt like oor-suthifying or travelling, I spent that holiday writing up a few programs to pull up data for tamil films from an online site(Release Date, Director, Producer, MD, Lyricist, list of actors/actresses etc) and store them into an Excel sheet. I got the data for some 3000 films from 76-04. A few rows need reviewing but once I do that, I can share the file with TF historians here.(The movie dates in my posts are pulled from that excel sheet only).

This thanksgiving, I am working on another TF data collection project, which will remain secret for now :)

A very likeable song from this not-so-great album. SPB in splendid form, nicely supported by the wind instrument that almost plays "duet" with him :-) With some stylish orchestration, this couldn't be missed whenever broadcast or bus-cast and was definitely given enough attention.

I have not seen the movie but seen some song clippings on youtube and must say Kamal - Radha made a decent pair during those days. (One won't be surprised if Kamal acts with Radha's daughter in some movie in the coming years as he's still in decent shape  I read somewhere that she is particular about "role" and even got paired with Santhosh Sivan in a Malayalam movie, so there's a strong possibility...is there any other case of someone paired on screen likewise? i.e. mom -when young- and daughter)...

Kissan orange squash is a nice memory trigger :-D

Kissan Orange squash was selling red hot in 1985-86, no wonder it was a big hit in App's college. There used to be this cartoon series Fraggle Rock which ran from 85 to May 86 on Saturdays 2PM. DD would start its Sat afternoon transmission at 1:45 beginning with Ghar Bahar, some program for housewives where 2 old ladies would sit and talk. It is hard to think of a more irritating program than that, more so because we were poor in Hindi, so we would run outside to play with the TV on. Those were endless 15 minutes for us kids who were eager to watch Fraggle Rock begin at 2pm. The show was always preceded by a Kissan Ad an featuring an old grandpa with a white beard enjoying samosas(so maybe that was for Kissan Sauce??). Once we hear the grandpa shout the praise of Kissan, we will run indoors knowing Ghar Bahar has ended.

Vikram's release is May 29 86, coinciding with the Mexico world cup.

Thiraippadal says that the 'ammammOy-appappOy' song of JKR had SPB but cannot be verified at all (if so, it's one of those rare cases of Kamal singing a duet with SPB). Whose voice got changed to the 'chipmunk' thingy? Was it really SPB?

(சின்ன வீடு, 1985 , ஜானகியுடன்) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0535'&lang=en)

Depending upon which website one looks at, this movie was either a 1985-er or 1986-er. It doesn't matter all that much, IMHO, as I don't have any fond memories related to either the movie or the songs. KBR's iRangu mugam started after he reached his peak in mu-mu. While DK was a saRukkal, this movie accelerated his trip downhill. Not that it was a commercial failure or anything like that - probably it even made money for the producer - but the scale of popularity for the star had drastically come down from his biggie days. At one point of time, his movies had equal or better expectations than even the KH-RK ones but by this time he became a second-level guy, who later on stooped down to the level of competing with TR (nAnum meesik pOduvEn etc).

rAsA gave the nicer song to MV (veLLa manam uLLa machchAn is a better one IMO) while this instrumental delight went to his star duet-pair. Supposedly inspired from a western classical piece, rAsA had his own elements infused - to make it look like a pucca TFM number. I've seen this movie but cannot recall the on-screen stuff - possibly KBR doing some MGR-ish costumes, funny dancing and exposing the sin-na veedu. Nevertheless, very sweet to hear on audio and the song enjoyed its radio / bus / teakkadai time. The movie had some funny portions but not so strong to leave lasting impression in the minds. (No recall at all now). The easiest recall is the periyyya veedu Kalpana :lol2: Was she the one who again did a periya veedu in the KH-Kovai SaraLa movie?

While rAsA had inspiration, SPB-SJ are inspiring! Unbeatable pair!

#207 அட மச்சம் உள்ள
(சின்ன வீடு, 1985 , ஜானகி, ஷைலஜாவுடன்) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0534'&lang=en)

The first line, as read in thiraippadal (அட மச்சமுள்ள) didn't bring the song into mind at all. Those two words have to be split to get the song playing in mind :-) What a cracker of a song this one is! I very clearly remember relishing this number those days (can't clearly recall connecting this number to the KBR movie, though I've seen the movie...padam andha latchaNam).

There are some hubbers who enjoyed discussing about this number here (http://www.mayyam.com/talk/showthread.php?6655-Songs-that-have-made-an-emotional-impact-on-us-4/page74)and it's quite interesting to note disk.box calling SPB "சுப்பு செல்லம்" :-) Also, this song seems to evoke nice memories and emotions outside the hub too, see this blog (http://rajarasigan.blogspot.com/2010/09/chinna-veedu-bakyaraj-film.html)and notice the poster's expressions :-)

Other than the terrific percussion cocktail, the song also boasts of the spicy 'dhira nanna' thingy. Sometime back KV was trying to find out if TVG had sung in any other song - I'm not positive this is TVG but at the minimum, it's TVG-like sound made by someone. Spice taken from 'idhu oru nilAkkAlam' song and I think IR is trying to connect 'sabalam' with such lingo. In common speech, people use such jiginA phrases as 'oof, aaf, jollu, aiyyO, yabbA, yammA' to connect with this and looks like dhira nannA / nagir dhanA etc do that job in rAsA language (apart from the other mukkal munagals patented by SJ). In any case, that fusion makes this song extra-catchy and sophisticated.

I don't remember reading much dissection of this song by hub-pundits...I feel there are some brilliant musical ideas hiding in this number to be uncovered by V_Sji / Sureshji and other experts. Request their kind attention :-)

Yes, that's a mighty composition. I have watched the movie many times especially for this song and chittukuruvi. Thanks App for your confidence in me. :D Please give me some time.
skr, can you please write about it elaborately, as I have seen you post some wonderful posts/thoughts, I see the urge in you, but somehow you keep it very short .

Thanks App for sharing Unnai ThEdi VaruvEn song, I don't remember hearing that song.

Japanil Kalyanaraman has some great songs as you posted. I remember someone saying about this film.

'EllArum flight'la YEriyaacha?'. Aamaam sir, ellaarum irukkaanga. Flight already took-off.
'Film'ku thEvaiyaana ellaam konduvandhachaa?'. Yes, sir, I checked every instruments/chairs/groceries, everything we brought sir.
'OK very good, antha script'a konjam thaangapa, konjam correction pannanum'. Script'A? appadi Yethuvum eduthuttu varalaiye sir??? I didn't have any instructions about it.
'Adappavigala, sari pona pogattum, ellam anga pOi paathukalam'. Naan edukarthu than kathai, Makkal paakarthu avanga thalai Yezhuthu!

Only good thing about the film, is they showed the expo 1984 (I think) continuing on the lines of Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban which covered Expo 1970.

Like Murali sir mentioned in a recent post, this movie was a 1985-er but I had a chance to watch only in 1986, that too in a horrible theater (for all practical purposes a 'tent kottakai' but in a proper structure) at the Walayar Checkpost in the TN-Kerala border. This used to be the nightmare spot those days if someone undertakes riding the buses from Kovai to Palakkad on Sunday evenings when invariably huge traffic jam strikes - with people spending hours, sometimes even until Monday morning. Walayar village is actually inside Kerala but mostly occupied by Thamizh speaking people. The only exception being the Malabar cement factory's employee quarters where most were Malayalees. Well, I spent my initial few months of Palakkad life there (living with a bachelor friend who worked in that factory). The spot is equi-distantal from Kovai & Palakkad with huge teak trees and foresty setting.

While the quarters are in one side of the highway, on the other side of the highway is a real forest and travelling about a KM (crossing the railway line) will get one to that cement plant, located in the home of elephants. It's not unusual to spot elephants in that area and a real picturesque place with heavy rains for around 3 months a year (June / July / Aug and portions of Sep, until Onam arrives). The bachelor friend was a RK fan and grabbed me to the nearest theater for this movie that had Sivaji playing Rajini's elder brother.

MV sang the sweet 'oru koottukkiLiyAka' for NT while the RK songs were shared by SPB & KJY. Obviously, KJY got the best number (IMO) - the vEppilai karuvEppilai song that can raise goosebumps each time one hears it. The movie was one of the many AB-hindi-hit-remakes that RK used to indulge in those days. I've seen the original during college days in the audi. Well, I liked the AB version more overall (possibly the theater effect for NT-RK movie ).

SPB had this sweet duet with SJ and a solo. I'm generally not a big fan of SJ's speaking/ singing when there's no instrumental backing but the beginning of this song is agreeable, even sweet:-) Ofcourse, the arrival of SPB gives phenomenal enthu for the song, doubled by the slam-bang of orchestration as well. Rajinikanth was handsome in the movie and for a few years it was Ambika or Radha by default in all commercial biggies. Accordingly, this had the elder sis and the director was the same one who did malayur mambattiyAn, kAkkichchattai and thambikku entha ooru. (Typically such movies went to SPM and one wonders why Rajasekar for this).

One thing that I clearly remember about this movie was the Malayalam spelling (I was feverishly learning to read that language at that time and was reading everything on walls / hoardings / boards etc). pat(h)ikkAththavan. Usage of the second "t(h)a" that looked like English O was funny to me and so was the extra consonant that made kAdhavan read kAththavan  (It wasn't unusual to have such Malayalamized titles for Thamizh movies...possibly their polite revenge to the TN akramam of ugly titles for Malayalam movies...e.g. I learnt that a Malayalam movie named eettA, meaning nANal, was translated as 'inba dhAgam' :rotfl:). In any case, if you type "padikkAthavan" in google transliteration of Malayalam, it gets you "പഠിക്കാത്തവന്*" only :lol2:

#209 ராஜாவுக்கு ராஜா நான்டா
எனக்கு மந்திரிங்க யாருமில்லை
(படிக்காதவன், 1985 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2622'&lang=en)

Song powered by SPB and majestic wind instruments. rAsA in jubilant mood unleashing some of his carefree orchestral indulgences.

However, song looking so ugly on screen :-( Lack of technology / poor editing + graphics pal iLichchal. Should have been an embarassment for Rajinikanth & Raja when watching the movie (for BGM work or the preview). How can a successful director with some self-respect could do such screen shots - no one can imagine. More than the fact that the director / producer made jokers of themselves, the thing that irritates one is their taking TN people for granted / grossly underestimating the sensibilities of an average movie-viewer in TN. I'm sure it would have pained a precision artist like rAsA to watch such atrocities on screen!

Well, the song was a hit nevertheless - thanks to the popularity of Rajinikanth and the hard work of IR / SPB. Possibly rAsA had gone numb over the years to such massacres of his hard work on-screen. So should we be :-)

Accordingly, one can do two things w.r.t.such songs. 1. Focus on the musical brilliance 2. Get reminded of some personal experiences / funny events in life or the news items / other nostalic stuff of the time period when the album or the movie was hot. That way, I have the third reason for indulging in some suya purANam in this thread  ( First reason - documenting the effect of rAsA & SPB on a typical / average admirer in TN under a variety of everyday life situations ; Second reason - getting a personal kick in asai pOdal - like reading some old, favourite kaduthAsees that were saved over the years)

That way, the recalls of this song were the moring 7:15 bus trips from the Walayar bus stand to workplace in Palakkad koottuppAtha...bus with songs ofcourse :-) BTW, this "bus stand" was nothing more than a small open space -half the size of a soccer field- on the border of TN-Kerala where Coimbatore city bus # 96 used to transfer people into Kerala buses plus the location of a few tea stalls, some occasional drunken comedians, frequent rain and sakathi.

My few months with those bus trips didn't have any interesting events - except my precise registering of the bus stops / daily-seen-faces / "landmarks" etc. (Recently a friend sent me a picture without any details and asked me to guess the location and I stunned him by telling the precise place...well, I've crossed that exact spot 100's of times on bus those days and many times on motor cycle later on...wherever there're no big changes, I can identify every small sign / post / landscape...)

We've recently discussed the song 'ada machcham uLLa' & await V_Sji's analysis on that. Well, this song's 'dhira nannA' in the first interlude is used as BGM in this movie...

I thought IR was talking about rights issue and forbiddance of such usage in new movies...there may be copyright loophole or the maker of eththan paid money to the rights' owner (KBR?)...

Let's welcome ace director MR to this series as this is the first SPB-IR song from a MR movie that gets posted :-) Unfortunately, I never had a chance to watch this movie. Only a few song clips on youtube. Strangely, I don't know anything about the story line, BO status and such details about this movie as well - despite this being a product of Motherland pictures, that too with one of my favourite directors. Well, one thing I definitely know - Mohan had his mike  And, SPB had most songs (rAsA had one "track" number and the oorOramA Aththuppakkam thennanthOppu duet with KSC).

This duet used to be my top favourite those days (even now the most favourite portion in the whole album is the way SJ sings in the start of the second saraNam - such a beauty!) Also, the use of drums for the saraNam part is sweettO sweettu. I can't say the same about the tablA work for the pallavi - ordinary by rAsA standards IMO. Except the 'pAdinAl pAttuththAn' phrase, somewhat weak pallavi. Especially, 'sOrndha pOdhu sErndha suruthi' is quite dull in an otherwise brilliant song. Well, the total package is enjoyable and never boring to me :-)

Like I mentioned before, don't recall any Trichy-college connection with this album. Only Coimbatore - Palakkad connection. Possibly "the most heard album" during my night bus trips during the bachelor days. That too, I clearly remember many times hearing this in the buses while simbly sitting and waiting for the bus to start, after getting the ticket:oops: It wasn't unusual to wait for 30 minutes in buses (after the second show @ Kovai) before they took off. I had no complaints as long as there was rAsA mazhai.

I've recently read in the tidbits thread that VM had asked in a mag what things IR had given back to TN people.

Well, what did I personally give to rAsA for making my life so much -so so much - enjoyable during such moments?

How many more 1000's (possibly 100's of 1000's) had a similar enjoyment like mine in their lives, for which rAsA was never personally compensated?

I wish I get a chance to talk to VM :-)

IDHAYAKKOVIL

A very atypical Maniratnam movie --- too bright for his standards, formulaic and also devoid of the usual oligo syllabalic dialogues. An extended comedy track by Gounder - Barber turned "Punnagavarali" expert singer. Mohan's dad Rail Srinivasan .... another portrayal totally un mani yistic.

"Koottathile kovil pura" and "Paattu thalaivan" earned Mohan the title " Aayiram thadavai Thalai aattiya aboorva Mike Mani".

The title song "Idhayam oru Kovil" ...... flooded the Vividh Bharathi airings in those times .... but a bit iriitating number IMO , probably because of the monotony resulting from IR - SPB combination having given 100s of similar numbers sharing the same mood and rhythm.

One sign of Maniratnam I noted in the movie ..... Radha is shown as some management studies student and her lecture hall blackboard shows the "Programme Evaluation and Review Techniques " by the CPM - critical path method in the background.

And Vaanuyarnda Solaiyilae is decorated sadness. It's the sadness of a forthcoming artist who is willing to ostentatiously exhibhit it. Naan Paadum on the other hand is reflective. Enna characterisationO ezhavu - didn't Mani take this project over from someone(R Sundar?) after the latter had done a bit of shoot? In the sense, it was more of a "for-hire" job?

The first portable mp3 player that I had, had a fall one day conking its earphone jack. There was, however, one good thing that this accident resulted in. While testing it (after the fall) I happened to play Ada machamulla to discover that it filtered out some tracks/layers and only the bass notes were audible! (I'm guessing this was recorded to have the bass along with a few other sounds in one track/side and the rest in the other(s). Some punniyavaan here used to do this bass line extracting a while back. God knows where he is these days.) Whoa! what a treat! This one's another killer bass score - typical IR jump notes mixed with syncopation. Add to this some crazy trumpet work and lively drums and mrudangam. Like I've said many times, nothing can match the intensity of acoustic drums/instruments and this song's another proof to it.
SPB's singing after the first charanam somehow reminds me of MV, his singing is very much like the latter here. The 2nd charanam is agmark Balu though.

My first walkman had a tiny hole thru which a "watch screwdriver" can go in and adjust the cassette reading "head". Some cassettes (especially those "pre-recorded" ones) had issues with the locating of the tape and often only one ear will have sound with a "hiss noise" in the other. Yes, I love that song. Actually, all the songs of IK - not one can be tossed or can be called boring (OTOH, I don't relish anymore 'ennOdu pAttuppAdungaL' or 'padippula zerO' kind of songs from prior Motherland pictures movies).

Just that I was in a job for the first time in life -morning 7.15 bus catching, 8 O'clock testing-shop-floor opening, leaving the premises after roughly 11-12 hours etc was a big transition from years of a different kind of life : lazily getting up after 8, gang-A messla pOy break-fast, 1 hour indhu paper in common room, 3 hours carrom, another gang-A lunch, konja nEram library-la reading all kinds of mags / books except the subject items, chAyA, playing outdoor for a couple of hours, arattai, meesic, gang-A dinner, cinema, again arattai finally dropping in bed after 1...

Simple pallavi melody combined with rich saraNam melody and three delicious interludes :-) Standard / typical / singnature but very effective tablA accompaniment that is always palatable for people like me. Simple lyric with no earth-shattering thoughts but no irritating or repetitive phrases either. rAsA gets greater marks for music and pass marks for lyric, SPB sings without much ado (some prefer rAsA version, to me both are good) and SJ's humming is sweet.

padam pArththa ganavAnkaL please post about the storyline, song sichchuvEshans etc as I may not visit this movie in any foreseeable future. Is this number a name-credit-title song? Or, situational? I can't imagine any other situation than a stage-mike-singer-thingy. And, like many say here, this was a typical MP movie and not in the 'later-day-MR' style.

His prior movie, pagal nilavu, also wasn't like the later day MR movies per my feeble memory. I watched that in a 'deck' in the college common room and guys who organized the deck informed us that the main character - Sathyaraj - was moulded by the main character of 'officer and a gentleman' as per magazines. I couldn't find that kind of similarities, however. While 'poomAlaiyE' song was awesome on screen, there's also 'mainA mainA mAmen pudichcha mainA' which was more like the kuppai movies of that time period. So, PN too was a mixed bag and MR arrived big in TF only in MR.

That way, IK is something that 'happened in-between' and possibly a typical MP movie. Well, the big change from udhaya geetham is not that many songs with mAnE-thEnE business :lol2: Still, I don't think we can accord a lot of credit to the director for the songs of this album as even K Rangaraj kind of remakers were given superb numbers when Kovaiththambi produced the movie and placed IR-pic on the poster. Possibly the producer's last movie with IR (unless he took an u-turn sometime later which I'm not aware of...the next movie of Motherland pictures was 'uyirE unakkAga' where Lakshmikanth-Pyarelal were the MDs).

And, like V_S mentioned, the recording quality was great and the songs sound grand in huge-speaker-hi-fidelity kind of systems.

Somewhat old fashioned song (engE nimmadhi / dEvadhai iLam dEvi kind of sounds here and there and "Avi" sounding humming etc) with certain terrific musical twists. Especially the first interlude where rAsA switches off the strings, jumps to flute and makes a sudden shift to 'percussion-only' mode, delectable! Also, the second humming in the prelude with sweet guitarish accompaniment! The whole song boasts of sweet-sounding guitar chords but the 'max-treble-less-bass' kind of tablA sound is not my personal preference. I don't know how MR felt at that time (as he seems to have a keen interest for 'sounds' thru out his career )

Possibly MR didn't have much say on that aspect at that point of time but definitely was in command by the time 'O priyA priyA' happened. Accomplished much by the time IT arrived and could demand things from his team members including IR, MR had terrific tablA work for OPP IMHO. hA, how sweet it is for the saraNams! (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1233'&lang=en)(I'm taking that song for comparison as both vAnuyarndha & OPP fall into the same "category" of songs in my book, i.e. they have a common "feel" though I cannot explain how in musical or lyrical terms...ofcourse, OPP suffers from Mano but KSC is awesome!).

This song was a regular on buses and I don't know how many times I would have heard it that way! I can't help but repeat that IK is perhaps the 'most listened to' album on buses in my life :-)

This song also evokes strong memory of frequently hearing it from a distant place (possibly the Walayar theater) when getting down from the bus at night after work and walking into the Malabar cement quarters, to my friend's room where I stayed for a few months, until I got a monthly-rental room in the town...tall teak trees, darkness, strong possibility of snakes on the ground with lot of dry teak leaves lying around...such foresty environment itself made the walk of that few hundred meters eerie, with hardly any people around. On top of it, hearing this song coming from a distance could often send a chill up the spine :-) Fortunately, I never had to jump and cross a snake all those months (interestingly, I had to jump off snakes a couple of times in the dry REC campus - that had some really bad vipers, one of them bit our badminton captain which made him bleed non-clot and with great difficulty doctors saved him).

People used to warn that the snakes of Palakkad are extremely venomous and many die each year! (Well, they also opened a snake park in the Malampuzha dam during my stay and I had taken everyone visiting us there) and we had a few frequenting our backyard in the later years including moorkhans (cobra) but I was fortunate not to get into any accidents :-)

Great summary of the movie & song situations!

Thank you so much baroque !

From your description, it sounds like yet another "typical Motherland pictures' movie" (possibly the last successful one of such "aspiring singer" genre of movies).

App,

While Idhayakoyil is clearly atypical maniratnam (which strongly indicates he could've been a standin), I think Pagal nilavu has some mani ratnam touches. One can see shades of pagal nilavu characters in Nayagan: a bit of Satyaraj character in Velu Nayakkar and Sarathbabu in Asst Police commissioner (nasser). Like how you see Nayagan hangover in Thalapathy

Idhaya Kovil is a fantastic album of Mani - IR Combo.
The song of the album for me is Paattu Thalaivan , what sheer magic by the combo of IR and SPB . Oru periya Kumbudu .

#213 கூட்டத்திலே கோயில் புறா
(இதயக்கோயில், 1985 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1214'&lang=en)

Rain started last evening and continued all night and was still pouring down poonaikaL & nAykaL when I came to workplace this morning. The November Rain. When I thought of that phrase, the Guns and Roses song got played in the mind - the portion when the singer walks carrying the coffin of his bride - but it got abruptly stopped by the strong smell in the parking lot.

This is an interesting feature I've noticed in this workplace - the arrival of 100's of earthworms on rainy days and the whole parking lot having a very strong smell of them. There is no maN (every non-paved area is covered with grass) & so no maN vAsanai but only strong puzhu vAsanai. I'm sure in years to come, the mention of 'koottaththilE kOyil puRA' is going to remind me of the maN puzhu smell :-) Well, they've predicted a few inches of snow tomorrow and the next IK song may have to be associated with a dreary drive tomorrow.

Such thought processes were running through the mind when another interruption happened with the loud noise of the birds in V formations flying above. oh-Oh, many birds have started leaving the lake, migrating to faraway places and will return only next year. A few will remain here however (mostly Canadian geese) that will walk on top of the frozen lake, make marks on any fresh snow that falls etc. I cannot wait to see those footprints...winter's coming and fall leaving...

While this song is hardly about the literal kaboothar, I always get reminded of that beautiful puRakkoottam each time I listen to this song. Their peculiar sound when rushing in-and-out of tall buildings. They're present even in big cities, not necessarily only in country side. (I have watched puRakkoottam for hours in front of gateway of India. But now, if I think about GW of I, it unfortunately brings to mind the horrible Mumbai attack that happened 3 years ago just around the same time of the year )

Well, no strong past memories of events for the kOyil puRA song except some Palakkad rains of the first year that made us TN-ers feel tired of them, though I've lived there long enough to simbly love the rains that arrive in June wk1 promptly and even worry in case of the delay of few days.

The song had a few supporters on this thread for the #200 spot but adhikAlai nEramE was favoured by more. Ofcourse, an out-and-out SPB special and fully qualified to be among the top numbers from the SPB/IR combo! Dance song that has mild 'nAnoru ponnOviyam' feel but faster and more jubilant! (Please warn me if chEchi dances for this number and I won't search for the youtube). Never a dull moment, this song is a clear winner from start to finish!

Never knew there was a Madras Cafe in Atlanta. I recollect lunching with a dear old friend at Udupi when our paths happened to cross in 2005 there.

radiochandra, wonderful observation on Radha going to Operations research class to learn PERT/CPM. In Mouna Ragam, we found Revathi going to Econometrics class. Looks like Manirathnam preserved all his 1979(?) MBA textbooks from JBIMS and found good use for them :-D

I never lived in Atlanta.

We used to live in Seattle during early 90s.

We called the store, they sent us movies by post.

Even I am thinking of checking with our friend at Atlanta whether they have the same store now. I am curious too.:)

There was a NI grocery store in Seattle, we got Hindi movies in that shop.

Vancouver, Canada is just few hrs 3-4 hrs drive from Seattle, USA. We used to go often.
We bought music , did shopping at Indian bazaars, of course I did jewelery shopping:-D - chokers, step jhumkas:swinghead:.. good old days...

#214 யார் வீட்டில் ரோஜா பூப்பூத்ததோ
(இதயக்கோயில், 1985 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1219'&lang=en)

I used to mildly wonder about the necessity of the fight-scene-kind-of-interludes whenever this song got played. It got to be situational man, the mind will tell. Also, it'll remind similar songs in almost every Motherland pictures movies - PM had rAgadheepam, maNiyOsai & vaigaraiyil, nAn pAdum pAdal had pAda vA, udhayageetham had udhayageetham pAduveN with similar characteristics - singer on a stage or recording theater with a melodious song and soft orchestration while the interludes have thadAladi drums / violin gumbal / wind instruments etc creating war-like sounds. So, it wasn't a big novelty to have a couple more in the next MP movie as well :-)

Though a sweet song adorned by SPB's singing, this is possibly the bottom number in the album for me. Possibly because all other songs had some specialty in them. Also, even in 80's, this felt like a song from the previous decade ("is it really from a new movie?"). Nevertheless, it's not boring even today which is remarkable. It was a regular on radio, buses and recording centers and the whole album seemed to be a favourite everywhere in Cbe. Possibly popular elsewhere in TN as well but my travel domain at the peak of this album was limited to few towns of TN with Cbe getting at least a weekly visit if not more.

Like baroque mentioned, yet another 'recording' song, somewhat a reverse of pAda vA -there the hero met with an accident and here it seems the nAyaki gets into one. Limited range of imagination of the production house. Like some thodar kadhai writers in AV / Kumudam - very limited imagination and won't go beyond certain situations / scenes / drama but reasonably successful. Never aspired to be a Sujatha. Interestingly, despite being so closely associated with such mega talents as IR & SPB...

It's difficult for me to pick a winner in Idhaya Koyil except Oororama Aathupakkam song. Another aspect about the film which I would like to add is the separate comedy thread (with no connection to the main film story, it was common those days) in the film by the great Annan. I watched this film multiple times only for music and comedy. Definitely it is (not was) a surprise package by MR. Anyway at that time he was not much known (as he just did one tamizh film before this), we were not in any surprise. Everything transformed from Mouna Raagam.

Thank you App for giving me this golden opportunity to do honors to our dearest Maestro. But I don't think I have done justice at all. Anyway here we go:

We know there are four paths of yoga; Bhakti, Jnana, Karma and Raja yoga. Similarly there are four goals of life according to Hinduism; Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. Kama which is pleasure is often misunderstood as just sex, but the pleasure is a result of art, music, drama, dance, poetry including sex. Since the composition of interest is related to third goal (Kama), we will see how Maestro attacks every component of Kama Yoga through this composition. The interesting part of this whole composition is while all the above 6 components are tightly integrated, they can also be easily separated as per individual's taste and we can even add our own aesthetics in this composition (except the music part, haha).

Before going to the composition, first we need to applaud K Bhagyaraj for coming up with some outstanding concept very little known in film industry. We might have seen so many songs using 'Manasatchi' (inner voice of ego) including love songs, but this song is unique as it talks about a person's inner feeling of the desire and pleasure. Actually there is a big risk taken and he has done it quite well nailing down by walking on the rope, but could have picturized better without all those standard p.t. exercises. Also song was not much appreciated at the instrument level, that's where visually it was not engaging!

Having got the draft from the director, how Maestro works and develops into a full blown art is the topic of interest. We will come to that later.

Dance and Drama
Almost at the dawn, dreams galore. Hear how this composition showcases such a feeling with aplomb. Hero imagines being in indra loga with four gandharva kannigal, but his hands are tied. Why? There comes his manasatchi (manmadhan) first. This was another beautiful concept. Manasatchi appearing first than the actual person. Here KBR implies brilliantly that even before we start any physical interaction, our mind already attains/completes that state. புலன் வழி இன்பம் அடையும் முன்னரே மனம் அதனை அடையும். First manasatchi, then the actual person, so his hands were tied. Only thing I don't understand is why he was shown as an old man. May be just because of experience.

Maestro complements musically by calling Vatsayanar, Adiveeraramapandyar (no idea who he is) and then those gandarva kannigaL; Athini, Sithini, Padmini and Sangini. There starts all the drama and dance. Crash cymbals for introduction of each female. Even there he adds some minuscule sounds from synth alternatively to our each ear, very pleasant to hear. Two trumpets one at lower octaves and another at higher octaves followed by great strings in crescendo, setting up the right tempo with trumpet echoing at last. Such grand opening is required for this big bash in that maaya logam. The trumpets implying the big ones used at those times. Somehow that grandeur was not much captured visually, especially when the trumpets and violins are played.

How about this one? The two trumpets, the higher one is of the soul and lower one for the body. His manasatchi after introducing each one of those angels, he makes them disappear as the body actually tries to reach them, as he is not yet attained his desire. The high trumpet shows that agility of the soul, while the body is still in the phase of getting activated from the soul. Also manasatchi is not willing to give it to him, so he teases him every time. The time when violins plays in crescendo, he races behind each one of them and when the trumpets echo, they are gone, vanished! Magnificient Pause there (only in video).

S Janaki and S P Shailaja sings alternatively. When they sing the angels appear again with the magic of soul, but he realizes now that his hands are tied. Maestro understanding this ahead, does not start the vocals with SPB (the body) instead starts with females to again build up the tension to the hero and sarcastically complemented by his manasatchi at the end of every line. As this is a dance song, Maestro brilliantly introduces the 'jathi' at every line and every jathi is different. Please hear the jathi. 1. nakinthinnaa nakinthinna thirana, 2. nakinthinaa thirana, 3. thakathimi tha, 4. thirikidathathom tha, 5. thirikidathom tharikidathom. Some great singing by TVG sir (I think) and it appropriately sets the tone for this extra-ordinary composition.

Another beauty is how he has used the percussion instruments during the pallavi. For the single beat punches he uses mridangam. For every other beat he uses acoustic drum or hi-hat, if you hear closely. I don't know how he conceived that idea. May be because he wants to convey throughout those two instruments that those two beats are the heart beats of soul and the body and how it sounds when tapped one after another. Soul and body cannot exist independently. Both has to co-exist to attain the desire which they are longing for. But when listened casually we can only hear one instrument. Oh man what an innovation at every note. Colossal talent!

Not just that, if you observe even closely, the beats coming from hi-hat are more compared to mridangam as he soul is slowly transferring its desire to body thereby the heart beat of the body is pounding faster than the soul. Brilliant! Brilliant!!

Poetry and Sex
We have some great lyrics for the situation. Eventhough we have to appreciate the lyricist for conceiving appropriate lyrics for the situation, I am going to first appreciate Maestro for the lyrics. Why and How? The whole soul in the song is this jathi which is aptly sung by TVG sir. You can clearly hear where the jathi is leading to, from where it started.

nakrithana thiranana na (starts the real fun)
thana nakrithana thana dhiranana dhirana (improvisation compared to first line)
nakrithana nakrithana nakrithana (kenjel, seendal, climax)
nakrithana nakrithana nakrithana dhiranana na.. (salvation!)

Why have I linked poetry and sex together?.
Again purely my thoughts. Why Maestro adds more jathi here instead of actual lyrics. Could have been better? May be, but as I interpret, Maestro cleverly stops with sandham and wants us to conceive our own lyrics based on our imaginations for this jathi, so that composition becomes dynamic instead of being static. Instead of what is being given is what we have to listen, as I mentioned ealier, we can add more aesthetics to appreciate it better. Assuming Maestro has given us a small template where we can play with (on the final output, which is truly amazing!). Have we ever witnessed such scenario, I honestly do not remember.

So, he is also teaching us to code on the template, but strictly there are no rules and syntax, except to match the sandhams.

Singing these lines gives so much merry. Greatest aural poetry!

Music
At every section there is music. The drama, dance, poetry all associated with music. Here we will continue where we left off from previous section.
The drums after the above jathi is just spellbinding, no one, I repeat no one can ever create this atrocious punch and magic, mavane dhool! He gives that chill and literally gets into our nerves, no one can ever give me! I remember one of my town friend who is elder to me and studied at CIT, Coimbatore during that time (may be 2nd or 3rd year - perfect time to be in college). He used to visit our town for semester holidays. He always calls Maestro as 'Mottai'. He used to always get hyper about this song, especially during this beat. He used to scream "mottai" during this part and used to say 'Mottai mandaikkula ennathaanda irukku'. Even now I am screaming and my wife and kids are in for a rude shock  That's a monumental piece!

I mean the whole rhythm arrangements and syncopation (as KV mentioned), surely cracking and out-of-the-world stuff!!

While the energetic trumpets, bass guitar, ferocious violins tells the true story, visually KBR does not have a damn clue what needs to be done during this piece, just moves his legs here and there. Truly underwhelming!!

We can now hear the single trumpet at very high octaves which is of the body as the body is now ready for fun (except he is still in bondage), while at the last we can hear the second trumpet dipping down (of the soul). After the soul has attained its desire, it is now passing it to the body. Now the angels prey for the actual body. SJ and SPS seize this opportunity and comes with some extremely cheerful and erotic singing. Superb tune in charanam, giving the appropriate mood. The highlight is how the tune goes to lazy mode exactly during 'raaghu kaalam pOnathu, yOga nEram Kooduthu', Paarizaatham vaaduthu dhaagasanthi thEduthu', as still the hero is in bondage and they are becoming restless. The last line goes in for a great finish with violins to follow! Experience the "Maestro Roller-Coaster effect"!!

என்னைக்கும் இல்லாம இன்னைக்கு உன் கிட்ட ஆச (punctuations with synth/guitar?, clearly calling for hero's action!)

The crescendo violins after the last line clearly states the body is now out of bondage and the soul has completely transferred what it got, to the body. That's where our hero SPB kicks in with thunder, this time 'Pala macham ULLa' and not 'Ada macham ULLa' except to be let down by some funny dance movements by KBR. No look back from now on musically. During this pallavi we can hear his manasatchi again punctuating with those jathis. When he sings "thirikidathom tharikidathom", we can easily put "nadakattum nadakattum". That's the magic I was talking about the template.

High energy violins and trumpet in second interlude played only to again discover that KBR used it to some naive dance movements. Wasted opportunity! First time we are hearing flute as well in this interlude.

நீரில்லாத மேடையில் நீந்த போகும் மீன் இது (hear how he extends the 'Ithu', so elegant!)
பாயப்போகும் வேங்கையை சாய வைக்கும் மான் இது
புயல் வீசி வரும் வேகம் கொடி தாங்குமோ (hear how SPB pronouces ThaangumO, what a punch! Only him possible)

When he finishes the pallavi lines for the last time, for the same lines TVG sings jathi differently. "nakinthinna nakinthinna thiranana na" instead of usual "nakinthinaa thirana", so breathtaking! Maestro demonstrates how much space is there to pack more things in the same span.

Art
All the above sections contribute for an excellent art. Maestro here combines all the above pieces to demonstrate Kama Yoga. He also cleverly leaves some portion for us to fill, thus making the composition a dynamic one.

Explosive trumpets (drama), extravagant rhythm arrangements (dance), high energy jathis and violins (poetry), terrific guitar and some glittering tune and singing (music) all makes it a wonder composition. So, all the above sections, Maestro has done through music alone. Is it not a wonder? Wonderful Keeravani (?) based composition with western pop/jazz arrangements. Maestro has used just 5 main instruments, violin, guitar, drums, trumpets and mridangam to create this grand wizadry of art.

If an art is an expression of creative skill and imagination in visual form, Maestro does not have a chance there, as the music is not a visual form. On the other hand, if a Maestro can bring visuals in front, to his listeners with his music alone, then there is a 100% chance of being called as art. Maestro does not need a separate visual media to reflect his work. In fact, he is the source for the visuals (as described in the above paragraph). It is then a superior form of art (IMHO). Why it is superior form of art?. In visual art, we can analyze the product in detail, write reviews and even point out the areas we like and dislike it. In music, with Maestro, each listener is taken to another level apart from the areas pointed above. That is the listeners visual imagination about the product of work. I wrote my thoughts above, but another person will come in and pour totally different set of ideas/perspectives on this composition (again I am not talking about reviews here). Third person can come in and paint a different set and so on. Again, if a child listens to this music, he can paint his own visual imagination over this. Only few visual art forms have his boon.

For example, take the same composition and listen again, completely forget all my above irrelevant thoughts. I am 100% sure, no one can even think about eroticism here. We can just enjoy the tune, singing and the orchestration, that's it. Unless you go by the lyrics or the situation, this composition is absolutely friendly to everyone. It will immediately trigger us to sing/hum the composition along. You are now the visual medium for the listener (may be for your family now). Even if you sing alone, you are still hearing and appreciating it and you are both the singer and the visual. If Visual forms like Dance, Film, Drama, Painting, Sculpting etc invoking visual imagination in us is such a great thing, a non-visual form like Music, especially Maestro's music invoking visual imagination in us is not a superior form of creative art?

Few titbits about the movie:
The first 1 hour of the film is a must watch. Typical KBR's punches. Few moments I loved.

KBR does not like her wife, as she is fat. But she does not want him to be embarrassed before his family. So she sends jasmine flower in one of his lunch can, so that his parents will appreciate that his son is loving his wife. In the evening KBR acknowledges that and in turn gives her 'ThirunelvEli Halwa' and instantiates that he also have a heart.
While giving her the halwa he says 'The sweet behind the love is sweeter than the sweet ; This is english, I am B.Com, ithellaam unakku puriyaathu'. Later to be discovered that the sweet he bought was actually stolen from his father.

In every KBR film, the last title of screenplay/direction will be put at a very special place. It will not come as usual at the start of the film. You have to see this film when his name comes as a screenplay/direction. Please watch from 2:05 (yes at the 2nd hour, not 2nd minute), too hilarious, but first time you will definitely believe he is speaking while sleeping. Too much!

Father-in-Law buys him a light blue scooter. He asks him if he likes the color, he in turns sarcastically replies, ' color konjam bright'a, irrukku (light blue bright color'aam). intha maroon, pacha intha maathiri irunthirunthaa romba nalla irunthirukkum'

His brother-in-law finds his illegal affair. For that KBR requests him.
dei unka akka kitta solidaathe, ediakku edaikku chocolate vaangitharen!

A must watch film (atleast for the first hour).

Speechless after reading your post on Ada Machamulla .
You just keep getting better and better :)
Youve added some masala too with an Erotic touch :)
Really liked your division of the song into the categories Dance and Drama , Poetry and Sex and Finally Music
Keep up the brilliant work.

I really liked the way you ended
"If Visual forms like Dance, Film, Drama, Painting, Sculpting etc invoking visual imagination in us is such a great thing, a non-visual form like Music, especially Maestro's music invoking visual imagination in us is not a superior form of creative art?
How very true , this is one song (and there are many others too) which makes you admire Music and the creativity behind such a hallmark composition.

Going to the song , this was one number i didnt hear till too long ago and it got my pulse racing when i listened to it.
This is a song which has everything you want - The Bass lines , Counterpoints between melody and bass and also melody and melody and also Harmony with the Trumpets playing over 2 octaves , absolutely jaw dropping singing by SPB and S Janaki , to add to the magic TVG pitches in with some Nadhruthaana humming and elevating the song to another level.
Also the song follows Adi Thalam , but there seems to be an Anaagatha Eduppu (the Pallavi Ada Machamulla starting after the beat). Its just half a beat difference and evalo assault a SPB and S Janaki pick that part and manage the challenge . And i also think there is a minor rhythm change only in the Charanam with the notes playing Ni Sa Ni Sa Ni Sa Ri Ma Ri Sa Ni ~ moving from Chatushram to Tisram just for a brief while and then its back to trademark Adi Thalam.
A Keeravani Spectacle
You just cannot but admire this song .

Man of the Match to V_S for decoding this landmark composition.
Take a bow

This is why I am reiterating, you should write more. Amazing insights on the taalam aspect! Please keep pouring!!

#215 நான் பாடும் மௌன ராகம் கேட்கவில்லையா?
(இதயக்கோயில், 1985 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1215'&lang=en)

The sOgam pizhiyum song, the last one getting posted from IK on this thread as we close out the year 1985 for this glorious IR-SPB combo.

Another year with 38 hit songs - thus equalling the top spot held by the year 1983 so far. (1985 had 178th to 215th #s in this series that had a couple of days break for the demise of Mrs Ilayaraja and a longer break for the hub-hack but otherwise running a number daily).

A song of melancholy with a fantastic first interlude that can pizhinjify the hearts of even kal-nenju people. SPB singing with very appropriate, adakki vAsikkum emotions with hardly any dramatism. Whenever such controlled emotion is deployed, it keeps doing something to the heart. That is, it keeps one depressed for a longer duration because of the 'inam puriyAtha sOga uNarvukaL'. Best song to listen during night times (the prelude possibly got an "extended play" version in NBW). The oxymoron term that occurs in the first line of the pallavi is possibly an inspiration from a whole bunch of such usage in the 80's by people like KBR-TR, especially w.r.t. the luvvu thingy. (oru kai Osai, suvar illAtha siththirangaL, mouna geethangaL, kuzhandhai pAdum thAlAttu, iravu nEra bhoopALam, mErkil thOnRum udhayam, nadhi illAtha Odam).

Interestingly, the term was so catchy that the director chose that as the name of his next movie - a historic success and a critically acclaimed one - which repeated the SPB-IR-Mohan-MR combo. (We'll probably begin the year 1986 with that one )

The azhudhu vadiyum sOgam brings back the memory of 110V bulbs that had to be used in Palakkad those days. (The regulation was so poor, so many old transformers, tube-light won't start until midnight etc...for brightness's sake people used 110V bulbs even though the "rated" line voltage was 230V :lol2: Interestingly, the voltage was so reliably low that blowing-off of 110V bulbs wasn't so frequent.)

In addition, there were power-cuts too and one incident quickly comes to mind.

When the Palakkad company did campus interview, 10 of us got selected and at least 6 of us joined. One was commuting from Cbe, me from TN-Kerala border and the rest wanted to rent a house in Pkd. The personnel department frightened them that 'nobody will rent house for bachelors' (nonsense, there were simply too many renters willing to give, as we found out much later) and pushed them into "monthly rental hotels". It was so difficult to get good rooms in that small, dull, dark, 110V, 9 PM sleeping town - but they managed to get one room that could take all of them in. ("Babu lodge").

One evening I too went with them to town, had tiffin in the HariharaputhrA hotel near private bus stand (the only place where one could get TN-like sambAr for dOsai those days) and thought of spending some time in their room / possibly going to a movie. Well, the room was as such dark (despite a gundu bulb), I was tired / sleepy / gloomy but both the twin beds had others sitting on them.

Then there was power cut and one fellow got up from the cot. I did a foolish thing then, dived to the bed :-( Alas, where I expected the pillow to be, there was this dark edge of the wooden cot. Sharp cut so close to the right eye, just below the eyebrow and I was bleeding profusely. Following some chaotic moments, I was in the auto to Kerala Nursing home and moments later in the room to get repaired. (I froze when one of the nurses shouted to another 'is that small needle not around?')

Well, for a few days I had that big bandage close to right eye and caught the attention of every girl in the factory who said 'tsO-tsO' :-)

Thankyou very much App sir for your nice appreciation. :D You are most welcome, anytime.

As vinatha mentioned, I could feel, how much pain you would be in that time.
Very nice observation on MR using the title for his next film from this song. Very nice and even tempo for such a sad song. The starting echoing flute still echoes in my mind along with that birds chirping sounds. These are the songs, me and our friends were mad to sing like SPB and not even 1% of that depth/soul we can meet, what that legend has given. :notworthy: The way he sings 'vanthu povathundu' in second charanam, is just top class. Second interlude flute is more light with breezy guitar and high flute. Both the interludes are exquisite portions of the song!

The way the song has been orchestrated , and the way SPB sung it.

Just saw this, sorry for late response. I was referring to the world cup and my favourite team.

I'm wondering how this thread - that had only a couple of 100 views each day (not exceeding 1000 a day anyways) suddenly jumped to having 1000's of views each day

It must be the addition of movie / song name on the title...

If I do a google search today with "இதயக்கோயில்", this thread comes on top of the search

Anyway, good :-)

One of my top fav songs during the bachelor years, 100's of times heard on headphones in the bed! Though there was a mild dip in the scale when I first watched the video a few years back (disappointment frequently posted about on the hub), I've got over that and the song is a top favourite once again and gets played frequently on drives. One can never get bored with an IR song sung by SPB/SJ where rAsA concocted a new rhythm pattern and added exotic sounds! The low frequency flute sounds, vocal harmony stuff here and there added to the new drum sounds that were hitherto unheard (possibly new equipment or new recording but felt great when arrived) made this song instantly likeable and it was a big WOW moment when I first heard!

Since then it kept providing enjoyment for years - crossed quarter century and still feels fresh! One feels like flying during the middle of the saraNam, when SJ sings in an intoxicated tone. SPB in a terrific romantic mood as well. Interestingly, there's also some mild amount of pathos (possibly the low freq flute effect, rAsA cleverly wound his orchestration around the movie's story line - even in a "maRRa" song, absolute genius, reason why he is the undisputed king of BGM in IFM! ). Kudos to MR for getting rAsA into top form here and do some innovative stuff for the time period. There had been some tremendous sounds / drum work in the whole album and I believe some credit goes to the director who possibly kept pushing rAsA

Mohan / Revathy / Karthik were perfect fit for the nicely made movie (watched only a few years back, on the web) which some hubbers say had portions inspired from Mahendran's nenjaththaikkiLLAthE  Not surprising, considering the admiration MR has for Mahendran & Suhasini :-) Regarding Mahendran, MR reportedly heaped high accolades for uthirippookkaL (stating his life-time-ambition to make a movie of that calibre). No need to quote anything of that sort for his appreciation of Mrs.MR :-)

Apart from reminding me of the walkman listens, this also brings to mind the visits to Bangalore that started by the end of the year 1986 (the employer had HQ there). I used to visit / stay with a college wing-mate every now and then - when the company guest house room couldn't be booked for e.g....or even otherwise because his room was walkable, < 100 meters, from the middle point of Commercial street. Many of the Bangalore bachelors of 80's possibly recall this place called "Rubin House" close to commercial street supposedly run by a Jew. It was in that place that me and the friend (who lived there in a bachelor room) had talked a lot about this song one evening!

Little promotion goes a long way. :) For a long time I think this thread was known only to small group of IR forum regulars, and others joined only very late. Now I guess more are getting in and exploring.. To help them, I have added links to your index posts, in the first post. Wonderful write-up on a song which is very close to our heart. You Bangalore memories and this song discussion was too good to read. I think I saw this film just before joining the college. The title itself said something new and created a lot of expectations in us at that time. This film is like a book which we want to carry with us all the time. I really loved all the characters in the film, especially the father of Revathi. His role and his acting, I always admire. I forgot his name. Great natural acting. When he arrives to Delhi to see his daughter and when he was irritated by Mohan. One of my favorite scene in the film. All credit to MR.

Its a pleasure listening to your write-ups after clicking the link and letting the song play in the background. And playing the song again after finishing reading your write up. Can't thank you enough  And to Raja, simbly no words.

Mouna raagam - What an album. And what a lovely film. Love the way the music accentuates the film. Even pani vizhum iravu added so much weight to the film. Fantastic prelude to this song btw.

Still a lot of catching up to do in the last few pages

Indeed, App_eng.
Nice post.

Sensuous composition, dulcet singing by Bala & Janu.

What a prelude! flute and the folkish beat set the mood.
guitar followed by that spectacular violin is very gratifying.
lovely second interlude - flute followed by chorus counterpoint:musicsmile:

MR is Raja's fine work.

(மௌன ராகம், 1986 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2073'&lang=en)

Tremendous number by SPB! Right from the Ah-Ah stuff that starts in the prelude, this song belongs to him and he thoroughly enjoys singing the lines that are very appropriately written to support the movie's theme! rAsA ofcourse gives his beautiful support by way of the motown drum sounds (I think, quite different anyways) and the exotic sax work! The sweet way the interludes end, give a pause before saraNam can start is another interesting feature of this number.

Mohan got one of his few worthy on-screen performances in MR. Though he had many "silver-jubilee-hits" in a successful career, he had very few remarkable roles. The others that come to mind are nenjaththaikkiLLAthE (was it his first TF?), nooRAvathu nAL & payaNangaL mudivathillai. PM because it was the first of his mike movies. A cheerful face that can easily get gloomy (and earn sympathy) was his USP and he possibly made the best use of it in his career that was supported in a tremendous way by IR's music & S N Surendar's voice.

Revathy got the best of both worlds - bubbly young girl who did kuRumbu things and a serious woman who acts as a kalluLi mangini. Both in the same character, and made the best use of it. I didn't like the 'pOdA dEy' thingy much but it was one of the most talked about items from the movie and also one that was enjoyed by many others. So, MR got a pass mark for comedy in this movie (but he gets negative marks for the crass comedy in AN, a movie we won't discuss in this thread because no SPB in AN).

I don't have fond memories associated with this song - the usual stuff (bus travels, teakkadai listens). Interestingly, this song is really timeless in my case. I had listened to this involuntarily right from its arrival until the time I was last in India - wherever I went. A remarkable feat! Possibly that is the reason Balki wanted this melody to be showcased to Bollywood and he did a fine job  cheeni kum, in Shreya G's voice plus freshened up orchestration, is a fine manifestation of this timeless melody to those speking Hindi!

(மௌன ராகம், 1986 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2074'&lang=en)

Yet another SPB sweetie from the same movie that has a similar Ah-Ah start in the prelude like manRam vandha. However, this melodious number takes a different trip into traditional rAsA system that has tablA, flute & strings unlike the jazzy drums / sax route that manRam takes. Two great solos, both terrific but with different treatments and timeless classics! No wonder some consider SPB's singing was at its best in 1986. (To me there's no single year or time period when SPB's voice was / is best, I love his 'aiaiyO what can I do, tell me what to do' & 'puthiya manithA' as much as 'nilAvE vA' :-) He is boyish, for ever, IMSO!)

Though I know now how big a success was MR then, at that time period me paid no attention to the movie as such. (As mentioned earlier, watched it only recently on web). Also, I didn't associate the nilAvE song with MR either whenever I heard on buses or elsewhere. Like I mentioned before, there was a definite discussion with a friend on 'pani vizhum iravu' but never had a chance to talk to anyone about the other songs of this movie prior to tfmpage visits.

The theme of the movie could easily be associated with manRam vandha (married but not sharing bed) but the lines of nilAvE are quite confusing. (Well, I now don't remember where this song comes in the movie...is it in the climax?). It sounds more like depicting a broken-up Kovalan-Madhavi kind of situation in mind (sollAl pirintha uRavu), but there's none of such in the movie, I think. In any case, like rAsA certified, MR was one who filmed scenes as described during composing sessions and it must be appropriate to the movie  Someone who remembers the movie very well please highlight the background of this song as my memory fails here.

The movie also boasts of BGM of extraordinary standards! The theme is quite enchanting and one can catch one version of it or other on youtube and enjoy! So are the two female solos. The chinnachchinna vaNNakkuyil had SJ in kushi mood but some mature singing while the rain song had thuLLal mood and girlish exuberance! (rAsA had very similar number reserved for KSC in another biggie that'll eventually come up on this thread. He had a similar number for KSC in another MR movie as well).

It would be inappropriate not to mention chandamAmA when talking about this song. A traditional favourite for romantic poems / songs around the world and especially TFM, this is another nice addition to the name of en iniya iyanthirA's lead lady character.

As venkki rightly pointed out, 'Mandram Vantha' and 'ILaya Nila' were (are) most popular in colleges. When I was doing my first year (1986), every college, CIT, PSG, REC, CEG, et al every one participated in music competition at our college culturals. I think at the pre-final stage PSG, REC, CEG were tied. So they gave a final song to decide the winner. That was 'Mandram Vantha Thendral' song. We were stunned to hear that we (as audience) could not decide the winner as every one performed to perfection (a very tight competition). We could see an aspiring SPB in every singer and aspiring musicians in every team who played those drums, guitars and sax. What a talent! Especially everyone were looking how the singers would echo the ending 'sol sol sol…'. Truly phenomenal. Moments of ultimate joy and experience. I think REC won that one, IIRC.

Your posts kindled me to watch this movie again and now just finished watching it. I still could not come out of it. Thanks a lot App. Every time I feel like am watching it for the first time. Tears just pours. As vinatha beautifully explained, that scene is really poetic will really melt our hearts that will be reflected in our eyes through tears. Yes it gives a sense of calmness after watching this movie. This film is a life time achievement for MR and IR.

A film like this can never happen again, even with Mani Ratnam. His best ever. It is like a beautiful poem in whatever way we look at it. No vethu aarbattam. It is more special as it is pure and original and not an adaptation which MR does often. Be it the songs, every second of BGM, screenplay, direction, cinematography, editing or dialogues, ஒரு தரம் ஒரே தரம்.

What a song at all levels.
First up - let me get the nostalgia portion off my chest.
When this song was telecast in OLiyum Oliyum - it raised curiosity of everyone to insane levels.
Key reasons where shot placements - photography and offcourse music department.
The use of multiple reflections/shadows on window panes and juxtaposing them with real images
was a stamp of an auteur and it literally announced to the whole world that Mani is here and
he means real business. The intrigue of chandramohan-divya relationship was beautifully captured and the
lead up sequence was rewound and played by movie crazy idiots like me all over TN so many times.
The hero - heroine looking at each other from a distance was age old in thamizh cinema (usually so with
mohan movies where someone is singing and mohan is following or mohan is singing and heroine is following)
The same theme was strangely captured and recreated indoors by Mani - but telling a strong story inside the song.
wonderful and apt lyrics supported by the poignant melody and very sincere singing by Baalu saar - made this song an awesome gem. I like this better as a "narrative and mood communicator" than "mandram vandha" simply because of the visual play that was attempted by Mani and PC saar. All in all it is an "announcement call" inviting folks to the avant garde film making world of Mani ratnam and for that alone this is a song of lifetime for a film historian.

Yet another SPB sweetie from the same movie that has a similar Ah-Ah start in the prelude like manRam vandha. However, this melodious number takes a different trip into traditional rAsA system that has tablA, flute & strings unlike the jazzy drums / sax route that manRam takes. ...
I think this "rAsA system" as you refer to :-) is the main reason for MR breaking away from IR. This is the only song that has this 'system' in this movie. Probably MR believes even melodies however rAgam based can be done with modern rhythms. Just my guess.. I could be wrong.

+1, I'd be lost after 92/93.

91,92, 93? Mano debuted(?) in Velaikkaran 1987 as a substitute for SPB - a good chunk of SPB's numbers went to him. As someone mentioned, all Telugu Geetanjali songs were dubbed in Tamil by Mano. But SPB still did lot of great songs with IR through the 90s.

Something worse happened sometime in 1988-1989: Ramarajan debuted with Enga Ooru Paattukkaran and started the process of killing the "தங்க முட்டையிடும் வாத்து". It was all complete by Mid 90s.

After about 6 years in Salem, my family moved to Namakkal (The Chicken and Lorry town) for a year 1985-1986. We lived near the famous Anjaneyar temple.

What a year it was? I associate all these movies to Namakkal: Geetanjali (Murali starer, not the Telugu one), Sindhu Bhairavi, Mudhal Mariyadhai, Kakki Sattai, Chinna Veedu, Idhaya Kovil, Padikkathavan, Pagal Nilavu, Aaan Paavam, Kunguma Chimizh, Japanil Kalyanaraman, Poove Poochudavaa, Vikram from IR. Uyire Unakkaga (Laxmikant Pyarelal), Rasikan Oru Rasikai (The great "Raveendran") and Nilave Malare (MSV). I watched all these movies in Namakkal.

Remember it was before Doordarshan (TV) penetrated interior TN and it was not uncommon to watch a movie in theater every weekend. Being a small town, we could reach all theaters in 5-10 minutes walk and did not have any trouble in getting ticket. (My father used to comment Nammakkal had too many theaters for its size. At that time Namakkal was the only small town in TN that had a multiplex - Cheran, Chozhan, Pandiyan).

Some time in the summer of 1986, we moved to a bigger city - Coimbatore. poof... I do not have any memory about Mouna Raagam. I never watched this movie in theater or had its songs in Cassette at that time. Other CBE natives can confirm... I think it was not a big success in CBE. For many, like me Mani truly arrived in Nayagan.

(புன்னகை மன்னன், 1986 , சித்ராவுடன்) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2896'&lang=en)

Let's welcome Chitra to this compilation :-) Though we had a brief reference to her when discussing 'samayal pAdamE' song (its second avatAr had KSC), this is the first official SPB-KSC duet we have in this series and very fittingly so as PM is perhaps one of the crowning glories for KSC! Though she entered TFM in 1985 with big hits like poovE poochchooda vA & sindhu bhairavi, I don't remember her doing a biggie with SPB under IR in that year. While PM was perhaps not their first combo, it is one of the most known and cracking efforts.

It was a milestone album for rAsA as well and had other big names associated with it too (KB / Kamal / VM). Interestingly, it even had ARR & computer in the equation. A great album, without question. KSC was the mainstay (2 solos, 2 duets). SPB had 3, MV had 1 congo sweetie and VJ had the computerized number. This kAla kAlam number had lovely drum work accompanied by piano with violins playing the lead. Interestingly, Kamal-Revathy too had violin thEchchufying on screen  (It would have been nice when the movie arrived but I watched only after 2 decades and it looked very funny).

The melody is quite catchy and gets better in saraNam in my opinion. Especially the 'muLLai nAn aLLippOttAlum mullaippoovAka mARAdhO' portion is so sweet. The whole movie had KSC doing her best (EdhEdhO is one of her finest songs ever IMHO) and SPB was as good as ever. rAsA was possibly pleased with KB after their SB combo that won accoloades / award as well as critical comments from paNditharkaL on his rAgA manipulation. There cannot be two opinions about KB's musical sensitivity - he extracted gems out of every composer he worked with and the five movies that IR did with him had songs that can qualify among his finest, besides fetching him two NAs (SB / PM / MUV / UMT / PPA).

Also, KB had been a big promoter of SPB from his early days and the songs that happened in the KB-Kamal-SPB combo (irrespective of the composer) are quite memorable!

(புன்னகை மன்னன், 1986 , சித்ராவுடன்) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2900'&lang=en)

Though computer was the most talked about thingy during the promotion of PM music, each song featured at least one traditional instrument predominantly, making them endearing. For e.g., kAlA kAlamAga had violin. Likewise, there is some very delicious flute work in this chinnakkuyil song. For rAsA, kuyil = flute (mudhal mariyAdhai, poovE poochchooda vA, MTK etc are examples where the lyric had reference to kuyil accompanied by sweet flute passages). So, the singaLaththukkuyil too gets melodious flute treatment right from the prelude and elsewhere in the song.

A very nice melody accompanied by energetic KSC singing and neat SPB work made this song instantly catchy. The song was, in a way, also a message of true love...that TN-ers are happy to treat people from other cultural & ethnic backgrounds with equality and dignity (regardless of the way they themselves get treated in the hands of others). KB & Kamal need an extra shottu for that. That the people of TN welcomed this song and played in tea shops / buses / radio and their cassette players also showcased that they don't promote hatred but are happy to embrace people of all cultures and ethnicities.

The first time I heard the PM songs were in an interval when watching some obscure TF in the "New" theater of Palakkad. (Like I mentioned before, Sat evening was almost pre-written that bachelors go to some movie). The first song to be played was 'EdhEdhO' and I cannot express the immense feelings that went through my body at that time! silirppO silirppu! I instantly recognized that the song was from the much hyped PM (the line 'nee thAnE punnagai mannan' is very plain on that) and was so unhappy that the interval was over and the movie got screened. I remember madly enquiring the cassette shopwala for the PM cassette (who didn't have supplies) and IIRC, got the songs recorded from a recording center in the shopping complex next to Gandhipuram bus stand of Cbe.

It was one of the most played, most enjoyed albums of the bachelor days and continues to demand frequent listens to this day!

Punnagai mannan was among the weakest of kamal - kb combinations.
however Raaja ruled it with his music - not just songs, snippets of music that
propped the narrative every where - be it the dance school background or the
"edhedho" theme recurring throughout - it was no holds barred musical whitewash
applied generously by raaja - perhaps coming out of gratitude to the National Award
thanks to the earlier collaboration with KB more than the tiresome story of a
dance master rediscovering life and love only to end up blasted by act of inexplicable
hate. That one track of sheehan husseini - I was always at loss to understand what KB was
driving towards? here was an eelam thamizh guy with hatred towards the ladylove of the hero who happens
to be a sinhalese girl - this guy ends up being used as a puppet by a local bigwig with score
to settle against the hero - so age old shakespearean tragedy angle coming from a director
known for revolutionizing story telling and introducing complex character angles and confrontations..
It was totally surprising that such an angle on the eelam thamizh presence in heartland thamizh nadu
in pre Rajiv assassination days hardly evoked the kind of fanatical response that is more regular these days.
Talk of MGR's control on Law and order..

(புன்னகை மன்னன், 1986 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2895'&lang=en)

Perhaps the most heard song on headphone by me. The way in which the drum sounds alternate between ears is so enjoyable! And the wind instrument, AhA what a delicacy! Such a sweet melody in the honey-soaked SPB voice with pleasant chords and accompaniment, instantly throwing one in a night mood - especially the second interlude transports one to an EkAnthamAna malaipradEsam and twilight!

Since the song and SPB's greatness have been discussed umpteen times in the hub, let me jump into my indulgences with AthirampaLLi (the place where the scenes were supposedly shot for the movie). There are two waterfalls - AthirampaLLi & VazhachchAl not too far from each other and have a mountainous route from Valparai. However, the standard route is to take the NH from Palakkad and take the diversion to Athirampalli which is between Trichur & Chalakkudi. I visited the place in 1990 (i.e. 5 years after being in Palakkad, a shame) with house mates & friends, in a car full of KF kuppees and by the time we were in the falls, each one had an average of 2 X 650 ml on a hot summer day. (My indulgences with -OH, though limited, started back in 89, BTW).

I had showered in the main falls of KutrAlam in childhood but this one is quite different. The water in which you bathe / swim is "about to fall" and in case you're careless, you'll be falling with the water :lol2: (Much like the Niagra falls where you can wet your feet about 100 meters prior to the huge fall of the water). It's not unusual for people to slip and get pulled into the current to fall down and die from time to time. So, we all became sober just by the thought of such a possibility and wetted ourselves responsibly and enjoyed the beautiful sight of the falls. (The next visit was with family).

Anyone who visits south India must visit AthirampaLLi falls! The 'enna saththam indha nEram' place :-)

I can't forget watching this move in KG Complex (Raagam), Coimbatore after escaping from my college. As a first year, coming out of college is like coming out of jail because of severe ragging. Every hostel room played these songs 24/7. So popular they were. Yes, as you mentioned, we were so glued to hear Chitra's vocals more than SPB's. Vaan Megham and YEthetho were just unstoppable, followed by the theme. Terrific recording!

Absolutely genesis!. That time we didnt' know all the inner secrets who did the programming, recording and sound engineering. If what you say is true, absolutely a whole-hearted pranams for ARR. Definitely we could feel the vast difference in the quality of output compared to all other soundtracks IR had given earlier. Even with some local cassettes (we used to record in coney/meltrack cassettes), cassette players and walkmans the sound quality was truly amazing.

(விக்ரம், 1986 , ஜானகியுடன்) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR4069'&lang=en)

There was one year mate in the hostel who knew everything about bond movies. That was his speciality and he could talk hours about each of them (& other englees movies) and was considered an authority. I enjoyed spending some time with him every now and then. (He used to play guitar as well). Interestingly, though he ridiculed TF from time to time, he never dismissed them as not worthy and was a big admirer of NT. (Used to mimick NT's / Sean Connery's "single eyebrow raising" thingy and challenge me to do the same...mhoom, I could never do that).

Well, an interesting combination of tastes. In any case, he was instrumental in creating interest for Bond movies in a number of hostel mates and we never missed any that got screened in Trichy during college days (often 2 / 3 viewings).

Naturally, there were huge expectations when Sujatha & Kamal joined hands to produce an Indian version of a Bond movie. Part of the story appeared in Kumudam (like KBR's mouna geethangaL) and further increased the pulse rate. By that time the course was over, the movie was still not out. Kamal kept working on it for months. So, over to Cbe from Trichy.

It was in Geethalaya theater - next to Gandhipuram bus stand - that me and a collegemate / co-worker watched the Vikram trailer for the first time and got totally bowled! What a tremendously different one from anything seen in TF before, we wondered! The mechanical vikrEm sound in that song plus some more synthesised sounds, elegant drum work and the prose-order-like saraNam structure - all were novel and increased a lot more curiosity for the movie. Ofcourse, rAsA delivered goods as usual - a combination of futuristic stuff as well as signature stuff, melody and mastery all combined!

After the initial thrill with "new sounds" waned, vanithAmaNi remained the winner and got enjoyed innumerable times on headphones. SPB-SJ at their thuLLal best! People should listen to this song before calling any other number as 'racy'!

More on Vikram.

The film actually accomplished what the Bond films didn't. In1969, world saw the second actor playing Bond, George Lazenby. The tone of the movie was a lot more serious (than the 1967 Tokyo toor, You Only Live Twice). On Her Majesties Secret Service is still hailed as one of the best entry. At the end, Bond gets married and wife is killed. Movie ends. Then, the followup saw Lazenby leaving the franchise, and Connery returning. Filmakers wanted to go back to fun, so what could have been a film about Bond hunting down wife's killer turned into gayfest with the murderous horrible bad guy Blofeld (who ordered the death of Bond's wife) turning up in drag.

Vikram, on the other hand, had the wife killed part, and had him actually going after the killer under the pretext of handling an assignment. The gadgets are laughable now (that toy watch as explosive was awesome for us poor kids then), the size of the missile changing (happens to Bond all the time), and the whole notion of a fictional country (Salamiah, and this precedes 1989 Bond film which has Ithmus City, a fictional south American country). They are not cool if you look at it now, but goddam they were cool then.

Then, of course the music. Title song did not deviate from Kamal the dancer image, an the man himself gets his vocal robotised. Then, the rest of the song. My favourite being the erotic one that app is going to cover soon. En Jodi Manja kuruvi sequence itself was one of the best. Kamal's fantastic dance is one, and in the middle when the song stops as he accidentally flicks the princess' veil. The guilty look in his face, the anger in Amjad which dissipates and song continues. Just wonderful. More later...

Baahar Se Koi Andar Na Aa Sake
Andar Se Koi Baahar Na Jaa Sake
Socho Kabhi Aisa Ho To Kya Ho...
Socho Kabhi Aisa Ho To Kya Ho...

Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Band Ho, Aur Chaabi Kho Jaaye...

Those were school days when I didn't even know the correct words of these lines but was so mad after the song, including the instrumentals that accompany these lines - singing aloud and running around! Bobby was such a craze even in such a small hamlet as mine and I knew from the weekly mags that the movie had a beautiful girl called Dimple Kapadia. At that age, never cared about who she was or how she looked like. Later, my cousin who saw that movie talked highly about her and there was some curiosity. Still didn't know much about her except that she was beevi of the merE sapnE ki rANi kA hero, Rajesh Khanna.

Well, when Bobby was screened in the college audi, I was in total  that a girl could be so beautiful! Well, by then she was divorced and was acting in a Hindi movie with Kamal (sAgar). Perfect combo, I thought, though I never had a chance to watch that samudram. Finally, it was like a dream to have the handsome Kamal with the beautiful Dimple on a Thamizh movie, that too in a song with the great IR/SPB/SJ combo! That was many times ROI for the money invested in the movie ticket and who cared about anything else in Vikram? okkE bOnassu! (BTW, when I first watched the movie in theater, thoroughly neLinjified -as the scene was very much 'A' - but recent watches on youtube didn't shock me so much...age & anubavam factor possibly...still, cannot watch with kids around).

As educated by Sureshji, this song is set to misra chApu thALam (tha-ki-ta-tha-ka-dhi-mi, 7 beat cycle) and the percussion combo is as delicious as AnnapoornA idly sAmbAr! SPB and SJ, experts in this special genre of songs excel with appropriate emotions and feelings. The interludes are exotic and transport one to some dreamland! What a song!

True to Bond movie traditions, this had 2 other girls besides Dimple (Ambika as Kamal's wife, vanithA maNi) and Lizzy (now w/o director Priyadharshan) and other such gimmicks as girl either getting bond into trouble or coming to his rescue. kambLeet package and Kamal thoroughly enjoyed it! (I'm sure they opened fan clubs in Madurai for Dimple & Lizzy...for I have seen posters in Madurai by even "Ursula Andress fan club"). BTW, I have another reason to like dimple (nAn sirichchA kannaththil kuzhi vizhum )

There cannot be two opinions about KB's musical sensitivity - he extracted gems out of every composer he worked with and the five movies that IR did with him had songs that can qualify among his finest, besides fetching him two NAs (SB / PM / MUV / UMT / PPA).

Did KB work on one more movie with IR - Unnai Solli Kutramillai with Karthik and Sithara in the lead?????

phew! backlog cleared! a list of eternal songs and some nice memories, app. Keep 'em coming!

"Apart from reminding me of the walkman listens, this also brings to mind the visits to Bangalore that started by the end of the year 1986 (the employer had HQ there). It was in that place that me and the friend (who lived there in a bachelor room) had talked a lot about this song one evening!"

My, my! Memories couldn't get more overlapping than this! Rubin house was enroute to my school (the one that was just a few yards away). As a kid, before getting my bicycle, I used to go by walk and sometimes with a couple of my friends. As a routine, while returning from school, we used to stop daily at Robin House to drink water (that had a distinct taste, probably a tank that was rarely cleaned) from an old tap they had inside. I was really fond of the old-world charm the building possessed with dimly lit rooms and a kind of serenity that it always seem to wear. Lovely place... enigmatic, poetic, nostalgic and serene. Alas, the place doesn't exist anymore :-(. It was knocked down last year to make way for a pomp jewelry showroom. A piece of history torn off Dispensary Road. RIP. Thanks for bringing back all these memories, app.

App, RC, grouchy, great pointers on Vikram! The movie was really thrilling back then.. all the hi-tech stuff was pullaripps stuff!
And regarding Dimple, as an evidence of her popularity and craze among youth, here's a first-hand experience. My chithappa was/is a crazy fan of her's and had a big poster of her clad in a bikini () put up in his room! The poster stayed there till he got married, after which a baby's picture (with the words: god speaks to us through kids!) tooks its place! (I should've kept that poster with me, but sinna pulla, vevaram paththala. Damn!)

This page from tfmpage (http://tfmpage.com/forum/18977.17550.07.23.36.html) gives some inspirational pointers to portions of this number. Interestingly, that page also talks about the portions of the same Jewish folk song getting reused by rAsA for MDM :-) So, looks like rAsA loved that Jewish folk song. Even given the inspiration, this song sounds very local - especially from the time KSC's voice enters, the song is so good - typical rAsA stuff that is from his TN-Kerala border area, with a small Malayalam flavor. Couple of Srilankan Tamils asked me in an Indian store yesterday about MullaipperiyAr. (Unusual to see them in Detroit area, may be visiting from Toronto and their Thamizh was definitely very interesting to listen, after a long time). As one watches helplessly the turn of events and worries about the immediate future to that region, there's also definite anger about the total mismanagement of any natural resource by human governments!

Another song typically enjoyed much during bus travels. On screen, one can see Amjad Khan (yes, the dacoit Gabbar Singh of Sholay) watching Kamal dance with two girls. Whenever I think of Amjad Khan, I'm again reminded of the Rubin House friend who used to keep talking about him whenever we walked on MG Road and crossed the Utility Building. (Is it true that Amjad Khan owned that building at some point of time, as claimed by my collegemate?). Well, I cannot separate Amjad Khan and RDB's mehboobA, he is definitely legendary!

Though energetic, somehow Kamal's dancing in this song wasn't impressive to me then (& now). OTOH, SPB is phenomenal with a lot of energy! With similar powerful output from the two female singers and some delightful percussion work, the song is a powerhouse without question!

(அம்மன் கோவில் கிழக்காலே, 1986 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0176'&lang=en)

The sweet flute, violins, veeNai combined with that lovely tablA rhythm and excellent SPB singing! WOW! This song was an instant winner when I first heard this on a bus and has never failed to drench me with so much of pleasure ever since! The song smells morning so blatantly that even in midnight one can feel that freshness by listening to this number. A number from R Sundarrajan / Vijayakanth / Radha horror. Of the RS movies that I watched, this was the only intolerable one. (Well, there were only a few that I've seen - PM, NPP, AKK, VK & RR). However, what songs! This one is like morning dew and rAsA was kind enough to include a Janaki version as well on the cassette. (I don't know which one got used on screen).

A couple of my year mates, mechies, got selected by the Cbe based GD tools (most TN-ers possibly remember the famous scientist GD Naidu & his museum) in the campus interview. Though the pay was low (~1K), just as an interim & to gain some NC machine exposure, they worked there for a few months (before moving to greater jobs, abroad etc). IIRC, before taking up bachelor accommodation at x-cut road, one of them - a close buddy - had stayed with some friends in CIT (Coimbatore Institute of Technology) hostel for a while. So, I had the opportunity to stay in CIT hostel a couple of times and even taste their mess food, when visiting him :-) Obviously, we had to go to a movie know? Well, I'll have to also remind here that this friend is the same as the ambi chEchi fan

So, we went to her sister's movie, AKK. Thoroughly, horribly frustrated with the movie - though we were both fond of R S prior. enna seyya? But the songs! Oh, what a great treat they were! KJY had un pArvaiyil OrAyiram, PJ had poova eduththu oru & MV had oru mooNu mudichchAla muttALA AnEn - each one take one. IR-RS happily gave SPB 3 songs, however :-) Each one of a different genre and great in their own right! The first one in this post that smells morning is a sweet melody, soft and close to light-semi-classical and SPB handles it with elegance!

#226 சின்ன மணிக்குயிலு, மெல்ல வரும் மயிலு
(அம்மன் கோவில் கிழக்காலே, 1986 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0175'&lang=en)

One of the most popular songs of TFM, ever!

The real patti-thotti-town-city hit! It was when I collected my final results, course completion certificate etc from Trichy and returning to native (a few months after joining the job) that I heard the song for the first time on the bus and was stunned! Being in Kerala and a little bit out of date, I didn't yet clearly understand the reach of that song inside TN. I still remember the way in which the woman who was sitting in the same row of the bus (opposite side) talked about the song in a loud voice!

(She was talking to the another country woman sitting next to her and not to me :-) )

You don't have to guess that my heart was thuLLifying like anything! This is praise from a typical, not-so-much-educated, not-so-much-aware-about-complexities-of-music etc TN lady who by her natural instinct instantly giving certificate to rAsA for one of his finest, rarest compositions the accolade it deserved! It's a different kind of feeling - that I myself had become a crorepathi or something like that for a while  I don't think I've experienced such a feeling prior or after - typical fanboy feeling but I don't feel ashamed to write that - since it was a truly deserving song of "rAsA genre" - like nothing before or after IMSO!

The unrestrained use of guitar, flute, country drums, chords - even shenoy - gives the song such an elated feel and SPB enhances it multiple times by his zestful singing. Though the on-screen thingy is quite comical, it's not too irritating considering the song itself is a free-for-all kind number and any childish pranks that VK does to Radha are tolerable, why, even a little bit enjoyable because of the tremendous feel given by the song

That way, though me and my friend got totally irritated by the movie, we had the fun of watching the whole theater sing / clap / dance etc for the chinna maNikkuyilu song. Also, the film had a terrific run in the BO I think, if one goes by the 100 day etc posters that used to herald more-or-less-the-correct fate of the movies those days. (There could have been few political manipulations here and there but not to the extreme levels as seen years later). That way RS-VK combo had another big success after the Revathy movie VK which had phenomenal rAsA songs as well (no SPB there and hence wasn't on this thread).

I had heard the kuyilu song 1000's of times since then, on headphones / radio / buses / street / teakkadais / cassette players of friends / relatives / on the web / in the car but never ever got bored! What a tremendous entertainer of a song with great interludes that jumped out of rAsA's mind when he was probably in one of his happiest moods! And it is very difficult to listen to this song without at least Attifying one's head (if not tapping on the nearest available object or with your foot)!

#227 கட வீதி கல கலக்கும், எங்க அக்கா மக, அவ நடந்து வந்தா
(அம்மன் கோவில் கிழக்காலே, 1986 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0178'&lang=en)

The standard galAttA number for masAlA as well as village-type movies of 80's, especially when a popular hero is in the mix. One loses count as to how many such numbers rAsA had done during his career - with mELam, shenoy, flute & other standard repertoire, making them racy , dance-worthy and catchy. The lyricists possibly had a tougher time as they had to match the speed of rAsA in coming up with tunes / arrangements for such numbers. SPB obviously is at ease here, belting out the number effortlessly with his thuLLal and kEli tone. (MV too had done a number of similar songs credibly without much ado. These two are unmatched in IR-era in this area. TMS ruled in days prior).

A typical rAsA fan of 80's was getting weary with such numbers over a time period. Most chose to listen to the other 'novel' or 'melodious' numbers by recording them. OTOH, the public (or whoever were "broadcasting" to the public by loudspeakers) always favoured such numbers and one had to listen to them mostly involuntarily. Personally, though I won't go great lengths to stop & listen, record etc such type of songs, I never found them boring. Simply because, there were ingradients that IR mixed in cleverly to keep one amused. For example, I love the great energy in the first line of the saraNam of this song and wait to listen to it :-) Also, the song overall never bored me that I had to turn mind off. In addition, all rAsa themmAngus are 'ear-friendly' - unlike those made by others that are sheer noise - and one gets to listen to some sweet sounds / melodious portions even on such numbers.

Interestingly, not all such numbers became as famous as this one. Obviously the success of the movie & star involved were the reasons for the popularity / playback it enjoyed.

(கடலோரக்கவிதைகள், 1986 ) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1421'&lang=en)

From an adiyAL to villain to hero. That too, 'kAdhal pirivil sOgappAttu pAdum' hero

That was what Satyaraj -who did that menacing mottai, dark goggles terror figure in nooRAvadhu nAL - became in kadalOrakkavidhaikaL. And BR had that sadistic pleasure of making Sinnappa dAs cry for Jennifer. Rather than becoming a laughing stock & unintentional humor to public, the whole gimmick actually worked  While the mileau set up by BR was one important reason for that, the more powerful factor was the combo of our thread nAyaks - IR & SPB! Me and a collegue too had fallen for the trickery by these masters and had our throats choked while watching the movie...this scene was quite moving (though the whole song wasn't on screen IIRC) :-)

Well, we didn't exactly warm up to the whole movie that way (e.g. the climax scene wasn't goosebump stuff but still made tolerable by the BGM). The whole movie had terrific BGM apart from the manasaippizhiyum songs. kodiyilE & adi AththAdee took the top spots with SJ in terrific form (PJ & IR were excellent as well) but they also had phenomenal melody / orchestration and other techniques. Relatively less catchy melody and 'nothing-new-kind-of orchestration' was what got offered to the SPB song. But the capabilities of the singer came to the fore and it measured up to the expectations, creating the necessary emotional connect! No wonder we give SPB the top crown for versatility among all singers of TFM regardless of the time frame!

Like I mentioned in the IR-duet-songs thread spearheaded by V_S-ji, I always associate 'kadalOrakkavidhaikaL' with rainy Kerala. One of our associates those days used to identify Walayar this way : "Take a bus from Coimbatore to Palakkad and get down where it starts raining - that'll be Walayar" :-)

It used to be such a marked difference from the rain-shadow area of Madukkarai / Podanur / Kuniyamuthur kind of places (worst cases, Palladam / Tiruppur) to move towards the west through the 'kaNavAy'...and the moment you hit the TN-Kerala border, the sudden change in weather during June is quite striking! With rain comes the small river that divides the states, the dam / reservoir that is visible from the highway overflowing with water, followed by the tall teak trees and the rocky terrain...very interesting and sudden landscape change there! Being a passway between hills, it used to be very windy during the monsoon as well (AdikkARRil ammiyum paRakkum levels).

I have not seen the movie, but really loved the song "Poguthey poguthey" by SPB , kind of love related emotional song!, I did not think Sathyarj was apt for this movie, Karthik would have been better. AFAIK, I dont think this movie was a hit!

There was a song by SPB along with a Female singer (sunantha ??? ) called "Oru maalai sooriyan malayai parthathu malai adivaarthile'.... some thing along these line, it is one hell of tune composed by IR. Can some one tell me the name of the movie pls ?

Param,
kadalOrakkavidhaikaL had a decent run, otherwise it wouldn't have been possible for Satyaraj to have the career he had. (Ofcourse, he had other Manivannan movies in the pipeline that ensured his longevity but this had its impact as well)

BR himself launched his next movie, vEdham pudhidhu, with Satyaraj (that too dropping IR). He couldn't have ventured so boldly with a recent flop

Fun song with some drums / guitar / trumpet sounds. Featuring Rajinikanth & Sathyaraj on screen. Another SPB-MV number in our compilation, after 'engengum kaNdEnammA' and 'namma modhalALi'. Like 'namma modhalALi', for an AVM movie, where SPB sings for the hero and MV for the anti-hero character. Some loLLu / ridicule stuff in the lyrics to rev up the movie proceedings I think. (Didn't have a chance to watch this movie, every attempt to watch the song on youtube didn't last beyond a minute thanks to some disturbance or other).

I have heard this song mostly on buses or loudspeakers / involuntarily. Never had a great liking for it but compelled to document it here because this was a hit song. I never thought this was so popular (mainly because I was out of TN and its arumai-perumai didn't reach Palakkad) but going by the fact that a recent Dhanush movie remixed it, it should have been popular at the time of arrival. eppadiyO, ennamO, one more number for the IR-SPB listtu :-)

Ennamma kannu is quite a popular number. A sathyarah movie was named after the song, too.
