Any one interested in buying phones which actually confirm with radiation safety standards? For kids, pregnant women etc, Alcatel would be good choice.

http://www.alcatel-mobilephones.com/in/India/products

There is EC Declaration forms available to download, for all models. Price is also competitive. There are few android phones too.

Nerd,
I have HTC Inspire, no complaints so far except for the Battery life.

If you want to stick with AT&T, you can consider Samsung Infuse (http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/samsung-infuse-4g-at/4505-6452_7-34468418.html), other than that I don't think you have any option with AT&T currently.

One tip on AT&T upgrade, heard from my colleague
While doing the upgrade ask them to add the 'Free Mobile calling" feature to your account. Minutes will not be counted if you call any mobile in US(Including verizon, T-mobile, sprint etc) and there is no monthly charge for this feature.

Actually I had uploaded 2-3 songs to Google music. Can I listen it in iPhone? Even if I can I would need a WiFi to listen to it right? I can't download it to my iPhone (or android phone) can I? My question is do I have to download from the cloud on to my mobile device to listen to it or can I just 'stream' it? If its the latter though 3G would suffice, I ought to be connected to WiFi is it not?

Unfortunately iPhone doesn't support google music, but there is a way (http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-20061513-285/how-to-use-google-music-with-ios-devices/)!!

I'm speaking now for the android device..Not really.. Once you upload the songs to the cloud player, you can listen the songs from any device, notebook or mobile as long as you are connected to internet. For the mobile devices you can make the songs offline, when you are connected to internet(Wifi) songs will be automatically downloaded to your mobile so that you can listen to those songs even if you are not in Wifi.

If you are in Wifi(or in Unlimited data plan) always you can stream no need to download.

Nerd and Others, I will try to explain the usages of Tablet PCs in consumer/end user POV. I will discuss both Current/present usages & also futuristic/evolving ideas. I guess my post may grow as we discuss..

But the main question will be, Either Smartphone or Laptop, why the heck is a thing called tablet needed. That's what Bala/Nerd asks and Softsword long back asked why tablets, in place of laptops.

Tablet PCs are not new. A decade before, Microsoft tried it and flopped too badly. But why such a tablet craze now? Atleast to a particular section of consumers, if not all.

1. Form Factor & Portability(Not bulky as laptop). A Smartphone is too small and congested for some tasks. Laptop lacks true mobility. You cannot hold a laptop and type and walk. Forget PC. You can do that with tablet. Why carry bulk laptop?

2. Replaces PC/Laptop for most common functions(Browsing, Lightweight office-work(word excel), email, ebook reader, games, music, video, chat etc

3. Tons of Apps in market/appstore, yielding the functionality of many PC apps which are bulky/buggy and slow, even now

4. Make use of hardware - touchscreen, Accelerometer, GPS,

5. Use tablet as Virtual Machine, escape from Bulk PC/Laptop, operate ur computer from tablet.

6. Augmented Reality, LBS(location based apps) - this is possible in smartphone too but tablet has more screen real estate. AR in tablets is becoming exciting research area in Education. Already there are good no of AR Apps in both iPad and Android.

Random ramblings...

The absence of physical keyboard is no more a minus. There are ppl becoming fastest typers on tablets. Or else buy bluetooth keyboard. As of now, one reason why Asus tablet is a hit is, it has a superb keyboard dock with also has a touchpad, battery, and usb slots. this makes the tablet almost a laptop. Only missing things are a hard disk and a DVD drive. In future, generic bases will be available & they will be compatible with all tablets. They will have all built in - keyboard, touchpad, usb/sd slots, harddisks DVD drives, battery and much more.

Nicholas Negroponte, the brain behind OLPC $100 Laptop, himself is betting big on future of tablets.
Here is his superb vision - http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/03/ff_tablet_essays/3/

iPad concerts are becoming possible. Group of 4 or 5 ppl use tablets to play each instruments. laptops, even smartphones unusable this way!!
You can learn piano/play guitar with tablet. how about same in Laptop/Smartphone?!? Usages keep growing..

Why suddenly, after Apple's iPad success, almost all consumer electronics company are trying hands and testing waters in tablets?
Samsung, Motorola, LG, Acer, Asus, Lenova, HP, Dell, RIM(Blackberry), HTC, Toshiba,
Indian version is Reliance, Beetel(airtel), Infibeam, Spice, Olive Telecom, Notion Ink, HCL...the list keeps growing.
Recent market study stated that 2nd place in total volume sales, next to iPad, is not to any of these tablets, but it (collectively)went to unbranded China tablets from 2nd tier companies. Viewsonic G-tablet is one such. This itself should give some clue. Even though we have to wait for the ultimate All in one Tablet, there is no doubt that "Tablets are the future".

Tablet Computers coming recently are sporting dual core 1 GHz CPUs. This CPU is called ARM CPU. Now, even low power Intel atom can't run without a Fan*
(which is an important candidate in draining battery) so tablet is a fanless computer. Tablets won't do ALL which PC/Laptops do but is growing fast to become equal to computational power of PC. Even without a fan, with a battery much smaller than the one in laptops, tabs do excellent jobs - they run most of the apps which takes huge comuting power on a traditional PC.

Windows OS never cared an hardware platform other than Intel. PowerPC etc all survived purely becos of Apple. Now even Mac has only Intel CPUs. In this scene, all of a sudden, Windows had started the effort to port it's OS to ARM CPU. Why? Without ARM there just are NO Tablets. ALL tablets are powered by ARM CPUs, ARM-Cortex to be specific. (Unbranded china tabs use ARM11) So this move indirectly tells that Microsoft is prepping itself a tablet version of its OS. Incase, in future, "tablet hardware power" becomes fully equal to, or exceeds the raw computing power of today's PC/Laptop, MS has to release a tablet version. (Tablet HW power is already increasing, quad core 2 GHz CPUs likely to appear next year. Imagine 2GHz, 4 cores running without fan!!!)

Stats already say there are slight slowdown in PC Sales per quarter and tablet sales are increasing. There are lots of enterprises giving tablets to the Sales, Marketing ppl instead of laptops. In US, Many bank reps already using iPads.

The feeling that one day tablets will completely replace PC/Laptop is already is in air. kindly google something like "will tablets replace laptops"

As of now, one thing impossible in tablets are software development. You cannot run compile and debug your sophisticated big project, on a tablet. Complex IDEs are not available at the moment. But in android tablets, you can compile fairly complex programs etc. In future, tablet screen sizes may grow, and it will dock with a tons of accessories for multiple purposes which are assumed impossible now. Tablets will become highly flexible and each one can choose configurations of their interest.

Note 1: I will write the education scenario afterwards. There is also application specific/industry specific usage scenarios but i don't know how many are interested in discussing that...

Note 2: Bala, as you said, its business first and technology is its servant. May i dubb that like this? - "Any technology without solid use is a waste". But the usecases in tablets are only evolving, and limited only to imagination. for ex, a GPS on tablet has much more uses than in a Smartphone. For ex, you can see 2 totally different routes on single screen, at same time.

* - http://goo.gl/IuUga (Atoms are scoring less than ARM cores, even without fan)

Consider this: if there is no power & i am feeling sweat,, iCan use iPad as iFan(just hold the iPad in both hands and blow some air to your face). Forget PC, What about laptop/smartphone? is this possible?!? this feature works even if the battery is low. much needed feature in hot countries. Like fone app, this is called fan app, it comes pre-installed in ALL 7" and 10" tablets.

Nerd, you are having a problem with mechanical placement, handling/holding the tablet. not only you but many have this question.

not only this issue, there are lots of other issues for consumers. iPad didn't solve many of those issues but it did perfectly whatever it did and never crossed border. iPad is mainly not for ppl who open 30 to 40 tabs at a time in laptop and do rigorous multitasking(currently i have 21 tabs open). That's how iPad is evolving but Android tablets can multitask.

Now, the answer for your solution exists here and there, like Asus Transformer. You ore not only getting a way place the tablet but you are able to type, use touchpad, while ur device is charging from the battery in the base.

In future, once the raw computing power of PC is available with tablet pc's, then the bigger applications, packages (like compilers, bulk data processing, batch processing etc) will simply be ported to tablet OSes like Android & iOS.

At that time, you will not find only two kinds of devices, ie a Computer and Laptop, instead you will find devices in many shapes, various screen sizes.

And there will be Universal Keyboard stands which will dock almost all kinds of tablets, paving way to hold the tablet like a laptop, at the same time, having many extra functions.

Now itself some tablets come with a inbuilt stand on back, where you can place the tablet on table like a digital foto frame.

So, either this stands or Keyboard docks will help if you dont want to hold it. Other times, it will be fun to use holding it in one hand, anyways you need not hold for long time :) Samsung, apple & notion Ink tablets are known for holding with ease for long time, and they are slim and weighs less compared to other tablets. You wont like to hold a laptop for too long but tablets are comparatively less weight and easy to hold.

Read the roozwiki website carefully, generally the Android port may not work fully in 1st version. They will keep on adding new features one by one. For example in 1st version speaker/sound driver may not be ready so u cant play songs at all! But if u are satisfied with WebOS itself, which will have almost all feates, then dont attempt Android at all!

I guess there will be apps for most of the essential functions. For a normal user, thats more than enuf!

2) Brillant piece was the WebOS , which was one of the First and best mobile platform , very stable remember Palm were the pioneers in touchscreen interfaces..etc etc. Idiots sorry geniuses in HP
did not jusify this OS by releasing a mobile version on a tablet.
3) Multitasking is tricky not all user firendly..
4) Best rumor about touchpad last week was not "Bryna's tweets" lol .. It seems HP is deciding on their 1.3 billion dollar investment WebOS future they are planning to make it open course meal. If this is true this is one of the best things happened since slice bread
This would the closest competitor to Apple interms of Stable Operating system. It will be interesting to see.

Now coming to the main piece of advice "DO NOT PORT THIS TO ANDORID" reason, Rate at which Google is canceling its licensing contracts with manufacturers , days are not far that Open Source version(s) of andorid will have far less capablities than the "Google offical Versions" We have already seen this happening for Ginger bread , Honey comb and the update windows are only getting longer Ginger close to 6-8 months avg. With Google entering in to mobile manufacturing with motorola's acquisition, :( I am pretty sure we will be seeing this kind of hard handed control from google even more now.

Also one of the manufacturers , whom google refused to work with Might be building the first quad core for apple Ipad 3 later in 2012.. who thought apple would move from samsung who provided them with some amazing piece of hardware over the years.. "Hail A6"

Dilbert, don't worry about Android port, once open source is released its not easy and possible to stop porting it to devices already sold. I mean the hardware is sold and nobody cares a foot about hacking the device with any aftermarket firmware, be it Android(released versions) or some other mobile OS.

Regarding features too, once the base OS is set, there is nothing stopping to add extra features and only limit is hardware

As for patents, the main culprit is Apple & Msft. Anyways that will affect only devices releasing with Android and doesn't cover unofficial ports like Touchpad. Even there, Google has wise lists of selected patents portfolio form IBM and Motorola. Wait for fun in coming days

Thanks Venki.. even I ordered 6 (for my colleagues & friends) but just got one. There is rumour that HP.com will be having some stock this week.. watch for Hp and Bestbuy websites.

Whether Touchpad is worth for Original price of $400 - $500?, definitely not. But for $100, its a steal. I'll be using just for facebook, youtube and web.. and.. Angry Birds ;)

One thing I liked on WebOS/PalmOS is 'closing the window/application', just drag the window to the top like throwing the paper :)

Vithagan, See if you can install Opera browser, then you can view tamil fonts. In Adnroid phones, Opera is the ONLY way!

If you don't get Opera for Touchpad, try this:- In your Browser Settings select 'Text encoding' and set it to UTF-8. Kindly post the result. I am not sure if this will work or not....

Before changing, make note of existing option! If UTF-8 doesn't work, you may need to revert it back

which is the best* android phone? Samsung or Sony Ericsson or Motorola

* Best - (in my definition)

- Cost effective, fast, good resolution, Wi Fi, 3G, supporting many apps

- Camera / Music quality not a matter at all

- Price should be around 10K

sakaLAKALAKAlaa Vallavar

Rsubras, I have Dell XCD35 which is 10K, Its the best Smartphone in this range. Kindly search for my posts in this thread or see the comments for this mobile in flipkart.com

"supporting many apps" - In android all mobiles support most apps. need not worry about that, This is the great technical beauty of android!

- Cost effective, fast, good resolution, Wi Fi, 3G, - All this fits for this mobile! Resolution is higher than iPhone 3 and Screen size is equal to iPhone. all other 10K Android phones lacks this!

- Camera / Music quality not a matter at all - Yes! Camera and Speaker quality not that great but u can wear headphones. But this is the most you are getting in this price range

sakaLAKALAKAlaa Vallavar

Dell doesn't have strong dealership network for mobiles it seems. I got it in a local shop bangalore(10.1 K) , but need not worry, mostly its genuine except burma bazzaar types. In chennai, most of the big and medium shops shud have it i guess.

You can take time to know the features and to find dealers. Local shops and dealers may sell for less. Poorvika Univercell & shopping malls etc may sell close to 11k.

If you are ready to shell extra 4K, i would suggest Spice Mi-410 which is rebranded Huawei IdeOS X6 phone. 4 inch 1 GHz phone

Can Windows 8 save the PC? (http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/09/09/7692111-can-windows-8-save-the-pc)

Last weekend I accompanied my 20-something sister-in-law to a Best Buy to purchase an iPad 2. She previously considered buying a Windows laptop, but as it turns out Apple’s tablet does everything that she needs. And that’s a pretty scary thing for the PC industry. Cash-strapped consumers aren’t choosing tablets merely as complementary devices. Increasingly, it’s an either/or decision — and Windows is losing.

This week Gartner reduced its PC shipment growth forecast from 9.3 to 3.8 percent, placing the blame on economic woes in Western Europe and the U.S. There’s another culprit though: the rise of tablets. According to Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner, those in Generation Y (like my sister-in-law) “are not buying PCs as their first, or necessarily main, device.” He also said that older buyers don’t see today’s PCs as compelling. Microsoft apparently got the same memo, as evidenced by its recent commercials that transform people’s homes into computer stores.

This marketing campaign is just a stop-gap measure. The real solution won’t arrive until this time next year when the first Windows 8 devices hit the market. One of those devices will likely be a tablet made by Samsung, which Microsoft will reportedly unveil at BUILD next week.

That’s part of the best-of-both-worlds argument that Microsoft and its partners will try to make with Windows 8. You’ll see pure slate devices sold but also many tablets that let you access a full keyboard when you need it, such as the Sliding Series 7 and the Eee Pad Transformer. I personally would appreciate that kind of versatility, so long as I don’t have to compromise much in the way of portability.

Windows 8 PCs won’t just run mobile apps. They’ll act like mobile devices. That’s because Microsoft says that it has found a way to boot machines to the OS in just 8 seconds. A new fast startup mode that’s a hybrid of the traditional cold boot and resuming from hibernate will be able to get you to the Metro UI faster than you can say “This is a PC?”

The toughest challenge for Microsoft is to prove to shoppers that having full-blown Windows running underneath a sleek interface isn’t a turn-off. For many consumers — especially those who have fled to Macs—Windows has become synonymous with incessant software updates, security headaches and needless complexity. Some of these reasons led to Apple’s Lion beating Windows 7 in our recent face-off.

Can Microsoft make the rest of Windows 8 just as inviting as that start screen? So far, some of the tweaks under the hood have spurred controversy. Last week, Windows President Steven Sinofsky defended the decision to opt for a Ribbon-style interface for Windows Explorer. This UI treatment, which presents multiple options along the top of the toolbar, resulted in a backlash a few years ago when it debuted on Microsoft Office. In a blog post, Sinofsky countered by saying that users should think of the desktop as just another app.

While writing this column on a Windows laptop, I had to reboot because my machine froze. This reinforced my strong belief that Microsoft’s ability to keep the PC alive doesn’t depend on the company’s ability to wow with touch or compelling apps. It comes down to whether Microsoft can convince consumers that they can continue to enjoy the PC’s versatility without the traditional PC baggage. That they made the right call in scaling down their desktop OS instead of starting from scratch like Apple did with iOS and the iPad. There’s a fine line between the best of both worlds and a world of hurt.

For those concerned, Microsoft is soon gonna release Windows 8 based Tablets. This tablet is gonna sport Nvidia CPU. Most of the tablets (Samsung, Toshiba, Acer, Notion Ink, Motorola, Asus) are havint Nvidia's Dual core 1 GHz CPUs. This windows tablet is 1st one to come with Quad Core 1GHz CPU.

Generally its known that whatever high speed CPU or higher memory windows uses, its performance remains mostly same :lol2: But this time, there is no reference as this is the 1st windows tablet. But in case if this tablet outperforms other tablets then we can see wave of Windows developers porting their apps to windows tablet platform. Then the tablet scene may get more hotter

satissh_r dear, i am repeating many times, any phone with having capacity to install many apps will surely have 3G & Wi-Fi. Obviously its iPhone and Android, the most popular choice.

At the range u r expecting(20K) the Android phones i Suggest are Google Nexus S & LG Optimus Black P970.
More comparisons of phones in similar range - http://www.flipkart.com/mobiles/compare?ids=MOBCZKHWQHN2HHD5,MOBCVWAVYVZUYH5C,MOBC U9N2NGUAHEEY

Once you have selected a specific phone, look for an engadget/slashgear review for the same. Generally Sony Eriricsson would have good audio quality in both calls and music. Both headphones and speaker quality would be good.

Sorry for not stating things clearly Sakala, what I meant is a phone that is best in its class. I read your post suggesting Dell XCD 35 where you said it was the best in that price range. Similarly, I wanted a phone that has good sound etc.

I generally read reviews from GSMArena so thanks for suggesting these 2 sites, I'm checking them right away :)

Also, what do you think of Nokia 700 and the Symbian Belle OS?

sakaLAKALAKAlaa Vallavar

Sathish, absolutely no idea about Nokia/Blackberry. I am only Android :D I suggest Android based smartphones becos they are much affordable and equally fumctional with iPhone. There simply is no alternative as of now, technically and feature wise.

This link also may help - http://www.letsbuy.com/advanced_search_result.php?price=15500-23200&keywords=android

There is a saying that "Digital Cameras are not just MegaPixel, there is muchmore beyind that". Similarly, mobiles are not just hardware specs, there is another important thing called apps/ecosystem. Add affordability too and you automatically land on Android Smartphones.

Sakala, thanks for the link :) I've had about 7 Nokia phones till date and with every single one of them I had a problem within a year :(

Apple's iPhone 4S is swell, but pricing is the real killer app (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/apples-iphone-4s-is-swell-but-pricing-is-the-real-killer-app/59761?tag=nl.e589)

Here’s the rundown:

The iPhone 4S starts at $199 for a 16GB device.
The iPhone 4 moves to $99.
And the iPhone 3GS is now free.

The expectation that apple is releasing iPhone5 is gone now. But anyways, iPhone5 should be a new generation new features... maybe quad core?!?

As of now, Apple cleverly released an iPhone refresh with the same chip in iPad, and few features like voice search etc, but the main attraction is the price point. Tough kaampteesan for Android!

'$35' Android tablet launches in India, but it's now $61 (http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Datawind-Aakash-UbiSlate-7/)

The "$35" Indian Tablet was announced first as a Linux tablet in July 2010, and was revealed to be an Android tablet several weeks later. The much-delayed release of the tablet was tipped with few details earlier this week, but NDTV reported Oct. 5 that the device has finally materialized in the form of the Aakash UbiSlate 7 tablet.

Delayed for many months, and looking nothing like the original prototype, the Aakash UbiSlate 7 is designed primarily for Indian students from primary schools to universities. It will be sold at a discount through schools in conjunction with India's Human Resource Development agency. The tablet will be manufactured by Datawind in Hyderabad, India, according to NDTV.

Depending on how one measures it, the tablet project either grossly missed its $35 mark or will beat it by almost $5. According to an NDTV video clip on YouTube (see farther below) the tablet costs $38 to manufacture, and with transportation and warranty costs, that rises to $50.

The retail list price is 2,999 Rupees ($61), according to a Aakash UbiSlate 7 product page posted by U.K.-based Datawind. The NDTV web story, however, says the Indian government has promised to subsidize the price by 50 percent to students, so the student cost will be 1,500 Rupees ($30.50).

The tablet runs on an unnamed processor from Conexant equipped with both graphics and video acceleration, says Datawind. According to NDTV, it runs at a lowly 366MHz. (The Conexant website shows a variety of audio system on chips (SoCs), codecs, and other multimedia-oriented products, but no full-fledged, Android-ready processor.)

Datawind says the tablet plays HD video, but doesn't define what that means. NDTV claims the device plays full 1080p video, which would be rather remarkable for a 366MHz processor running on a $60 tablet, even with a video accelerator.

Equipped with a modest 256MB of RAM and 2GB of internal flash, the Aakash UbiSlate 7 also supplies a microSD slot for storage expansion, says Datawind. The NDTV video says a 2GB data card is also supplied, although Datawind makes no mention of this.

Availability

According to Datawind, the Aakash UbiSlate 7 is now available for purchase by the public for 2,999 Rupees, or about $61. Government subsidies to students may bring that down to $35 or $30. More information may be found at the Datawind Aakash UbiSlate 7.

Will confirm the exact model later. It's good but i wouldn't say great. If noise-cancellation is enabled, there's more punch in the bass and the output overall but sometimes, depending on the song source, there's some jarring and loss of clarity.

Thulliyamaana reproduction is what i'm expecting, noise-cancelling is not all that relevant now)

Got a new HDTV. Plasma.
I am now thinking between a PS3 and a HTPC set-up. Please help me figure out.
I watch about 3-4 movies a week. Gaming, not much except for party gaming with friends and some motion sensing games for the sister (will be a bonus). I personally play FIFA and NFS, nothing else.

Gaming, 3D, Move Exclusives. All fine. PS3 has a dedicated bluray drive (future-proof), plus can stream movies, I hear. How good is the USB/HDD playback? How versatile is the playback? (All audio/video codecs, till recent)

HTPCs can be upgraded in minimal costs and can work as a downloading rig too. But, how much will a low-end HTPC cost? (Barring the Display obviously!) It might include capacity for some gaming NFS HP2 and FIFA 07 or 08 will suffice. HDMI and the ability to hook it up with an existing 5.1. (iBall Booster speakers for PC. Has the typical 3.5mm jacks. 3 of them) Also, can it be hooked upto to a PS3?

The viewing distance was small. 10' room, 8ft with the sofa or whatever in.
LCD pixelated too much and my budget didn't allow a LED purchase. Went with a 42" Plasma. Got it for 37k from eZone. LG. Almost the same price as on Flipkart. Satisfied with the Vibrant picture it offers. :D Much better than its LCD equivalent. And, I personally like it better than LED movie watching too. Agree its power-saving green-stuff and all that.. but Tamil bluray rips look a lot better in a LCD (proper distance) or even more dazzling in a Plasma. (This I found out only after buying it) I'm afraid about the Pixel burns when on Gaming and such. Adhu dhaan prachana.

HTPC without gaming would set you back by at least 20K. Gaming HTPC with decent config would cost 25-30K. PS3 is your best bet, as of now.

Anybody with a PS3 here?
I absolutely have no idea regarding .mkv, .ogg, .mp4 playback with DTS sound or maybe some advanced codecs like x264 or h264. And, there are limitations on the HDD used. Only those 2.5" work and those which are 9 inches or less in the longer dimension. And 5.1 stumps me everytime.

Plus, the firmware confusion. I need a PS3 with a FW 3.55 or lesser to jailbreak it. Any PS I buy, if ships with a 3.60 FW, i cannot JB it

rsubras, u r aking about Acer and HP's tablet? becos HP not into android smartphones. Acer has some phones which didn't pick up at all.

As for as tablet, Acer Iconia 10 inch tablet is a decent buy. HP has washed its hand out of tablet business, due to zero sales. Recently it did a clearance by reducing the Touchpad price to just 100 dollars, few hubbers got it too!

Airtel's Magiq was initially announced with a 1 gg CPU but silently they pulled out that model and now selling a 800 Meg CPU. I dont know why! As of now, nothing in the link u gave is promising for me. May be this iBall tablet may be good, as it sports a real 1 Gig CPU( Texas Instruments Cortex A8) All these are 7 inch tabs. For 10 inches, (iPad is 9.7 inch) Motorola xoom and Asus Transformer is good, In India these tablets are costing 32K range. Same can be brought for half the price in US, especially during the upcoming holiday season.

1 month before, Staples US gave a $100 discount on all tablets and my friends brought a Motorola xoom(17K) and Dell Streak 7(10K).

If you have friends in US, and want to buy a good 7 inch tab, i strongly suggest Dell Streak 7. As for 10 inch tab, i strongly suggest Archos 101 G9 tablet which is 1.5 Gig dual core. Adn the price is much cheaper(18K) even without discount. Reviews are also good. This tab is available only in US

Nintendo was the pioneer. They introduced a Wii, for Wireless gaming (weird name, I know) which works like the Billi-Sooniya wand. We wave a joystick which functions as a Tennis racquet or a Cricket bat or whatever you wish to.
MS called it Kinect and announced it as an accesory to its Xbox360. Sony called it PS Move and sold it along with its PS3 consoles. Priced around 4500 for one controller, the web-cam (fancily, the eye) and some game discs its a steal. Works cool for Party and can be handy for exercising and all, too.
Most of them are sports - Golf, Beach Volleyball :p , Tennis, etc.
Its available widely since last Christmas, I believe.

Acer vs DELL I asked for android mobile.......

rsubras, Acer Android mobiles, as I already said, didn't take off at all. Its mostly a non starter. Cost is also high. THe biggest advantage these days, wrt smartphones is, you can look at complete specs, nook and corner and come to a decision. So based on that, you can nail down the best of the best specs with lowest available cost in market. The phones I am filtering and recommending are like that. At the same time I am also aware of the limitations. You cannot get everything. Even a 30K Samsung Galaxy S2 has some shortcomings and there are very less phones even if you pay above that price point. Of course, they too will have some shortcomings.

Coming to dell, I already suggested Dell XCD35 many times. Now that it has reduced to 8.7K its a steal! THere just is No phone in that price range which is as best as that, inspite of the shortcomings(camera, speaker, hd video etc) Other dell phones are not that cheap and there are superb alternatives at that price ranges. So, in short, expect XCD35, there is no phone to celebrate, from dell's range. The only other Android product i can suggest is Dell Streak 7 Tablet which is a nice one to buy at US, not here!

So, we can come to better conclusion if you decide your price range. Then Let me list the phones in that range, also the phones in slightly above and below ranges :)

I recently learnt about a song detection app that apparently can fetch details of a song (from what I understood, say there's a song playing somewhere and one wants to know which one it is. Turn on this app and it'll pick up the sound, search and fetch details). If this really is the capability of the app, I must admit that I'm fully stumped and stunned. (I don't use a smart phone, so I have pretty much no idea of these apps anyway).
Can someone throw some light on this? How does the app really work? What is the logic that such an app can possibly use?

Android Price-wise List-up:

Thought it would be nice to put up something (IMO, ofcourse) related to the Android line of phones. Was looking for one for my brother, ended up with getting the HTC Wildfire. Basically it sums up to two things - One the processor speed, upon which the fluidic UI and applications function. The cost, depends on the segments and of course the brands.

Lowest range (500-650 Mhz processors)
Only Generic brands available. Karbonn, Micromax and Spice are the contenders. About 6000 INR. No 3G.

Low-end: (INR 7-10k)
Will sport about the same processor speed. Only that they are reputed brands.
Galaxy Y is the new and retails at 7.5k!
HTC Wildfire is a best-seller. HTC Sense UI is a delight to use. Has 3G. Not much difference from LG Optimus One. 600 Mhz. Can be overclocked to 800 I think.

Mid-end (INR 10-15k)
Motorola Defy is my pick. Sturdy. Waterproof (!) 800 Mhz. Can be overclocked to 1 Ghz.
Galaxy Ace, for Samsung enthusiasts and HTC Wildfire S for those who prefer HTC's UI. About 13k.

High-End (15-20k)
Samsung Galaxy S I-9000 or SE Experia X10. Both are great. Around 17.5k.
Dell Venue is a neat option which would cost about 22k.

Top-End
No brainer. SGS II vs. HTC Sensation. 30k.

(P.S: Flipkart is a very safe option. Highly reccomended. Cheaper than Chennai's retail chains. If you want it cheapest, Letsbuy is an option. But, not as quick or reliable as Flipkart. No Hassles on both services, for me. They were the same. Just that Flipkart's packing was too good)

I mean, when the size of LED gets to around 50" or so, I find it annoying to see traces and lags. Plasma delivers some punch and vibrance. It was all IMO, I like it better. LED looks more closer to reality and Plasma was more close to the theatre experience. I like that aspect of Plasma's PQ. LEDs are the advanced technology, energy saving and better-looking for Games, etc. I agree. But somehow I'm not so into it.

When it comes to Picture quality, the widely held belief is that Plasma trumps LED. The main complaints against plasmas are image burn in and lesser half life (though manufacturers "claim" this is no longer an issue in the current models). And plasmas use up more energy

Venkiraja has LG PJ350R plasma (I have the same too). As you have rightly observed Plasmas generally offer natural colours and smooth picture as opposed to LEDs. Pioneer Kuros are no longer in production, but there is a new range of LED tvs which carries the "Elite" tag and PQ of Pioneer Kuros. They are damn expensive, though.

For a Home theatre set-up.. say a movie everyday (at max), Plasma is the right choice.
For full-on usage, like Living room TVs with a set-top box or analog cables, LED is a better option. And for regular usage, I suggest don't go for >32" screen size. For HT setup a 42" is ideal. A 50" Plasma is dropdead gorgeous! :D Saves a lotta cash when compared to equivalent LEDs. For the minimal time we use, (for Movies alone, I mean) power consumption and everything is negligible.
Also, gaming is better in LEDs, no doubts!

Now, I've decided to go the plasma way - either Panasonic VT30 or Samsung PND8000 (42 inches).

Panasonic Viera has the best Plasmas right now. The next best thing is LG, and is cheaper than Viera models. If you're looking for 3D Plasma, LG has a 42" version for 40k (Not at all suggested, except you're a hardcore 3D gamer or an avid Sports TV watcher)

Nandri hai. Some more questions

I'm a passionate hater of gaming (*), so that's totally out of the equation. I don't want 3D either but the models i'm looking for come with 3D whether we like it or not

"Plasma is better for movies while LED is better for TV" - Why, how? Konjam vilakkavum.
Considering that we watch standard source most of the time compared to HD source, which is the better bet? Does standard source input (movies, sports) look better in Plasma?

LM - you said burn in is no longer a problem. How about PQ life? Any ideas?

At a store, the rep showed me a photo in a Sony model and then the same in the VT30. The Sony showed some detail in the background while in the VT30, it was too dim to be visible. I asked him if the settings were different and if that made the difference but he said the settings were the same. Ore conpees...

(*): Gaming - for the life of me, i can't understand why grown up men indulge in things like gaming, WWF etc. Comics, animation, cartoon etc are perfectly understandable and healthy but gaming???? Another extremely annoying thing is F1. It's not even a freakin sport. Waste of the petrol, waste of the discuss. Idhula Ferari fans, murari fans nu oru group. Absolutely pretentious. Ban all these, i say!

Plasmas offer high contrast ratio which is never equalled by a LCD/LED. In fact LED/LCD makers are trying hard to equal the PQ of a Plasma. LEDs have more brightness compared to a Plasma and that is what catches a consumer's attention. The colors in LED pop out of the screen and is quite unnatural from movie watching perspective. While watching a TV program, these things don't matter much. About life of Plasma TVs, latest Plasmas have half life of 1,00,000 hours after which the brightness becomes half. 1L hours is a lot :)

Reg. showroom test, you cannot judge a Plasma in a showroom because of too much of ambient light. Also, photos look better in LCD than a Plasma, but when it comes to movies Plasma trumps a LCD/LED more often than not.

Go for LCD/LED if you watch TV programs more than movies and if there is a light source in front of TV. Plasmas wouldn't be a good option in a brightly lit room.

littlemaster1982
13th October 2011, 06:36 PM
Addendum: While Plasmas don't have burn-in issues like before, they need to be taken care in the first 100-200 hours. It is called break-in period and it is advisable to have contrast and brightness settings somewhere near 50% and not to watch TV channels for a long time.

About life of Plasma TVs, latest Plasmas have half life of 1,00,000 hours after which the brightness becomes half. 1L hours is a lot
From what i read, it seems like these claims are unrealistic. However, maybe even if not 1L hours, it is long enough not to matter

Addendum: While Plasmas don't have burn-in issues like before, they need to be taken care in the first 100-200 hours. It is called break-in period and it is advisable to have contrast and brightness settings somewhere near 50% and not to watch TV channels for a long time.
OK. Do you know if the THX setting has this or should we customize it brightness/contrast to 50%?

Also, profit margins are higher for LEDs. I'm yet to come across a salesman who recommends Plasma.

Yes. 1L hours is a large number. Even if it is around 35K hours, it will last for around 10 years with 10 hours per day usage.

OK. Do you know if the THX setting has this or should we customize it brightness/contrast to 50%?

You can manually lower these settings. There are calibration settings available online which are quite helpful.

Motorola Defy (Costliest in the segment): Buy from flipkart 15.5k I think. Or Use coupons and get it for 14.5k from Letsbuy. Alert: Please ask for the Red lens camera. It gives you 720p video recording. If you get a Green Lens Defy, 720p Video recording ain't possible!
HTC Wildfire (Cheapest in the segment): Ditto. 10.25k in flipkart. Use coupons and buy it for 9k in Letsbuy.

Major difference is the Processor speed. 528 Mhz on HTC and 800 MHz on Motorola. Motorola is scratchproof and waterproof. Is bigger. Both have a 5 mpx Cam. If you're not secure with online shopping go to Croma any day (Please avoid Poorvika or Univercell)
:happy2: Good luck!

I'm a passionate hater of gaming (*), so that's totally out of the equation. I don't want 3D either but the models i'm looking for come with 3D whether we like it or not
Puriyala. The PJ Series of LG Plasmas we got (Myself and LM) don't have the 3D annoyance. Panasonic also has the Sans-3D TVs which are better off than their sub-standard 3DTVs.

"Plasma is better for movies while LED is better for TV" - Why, how? Konjam vilakkavum.
As I said earlier, Plasma is closer to the theatre experience, while LED is closer to the naked eye. And, its kind of annoying to watch uber-contrasted, vibrant images of women crying and spying on each other for a long time. Plus, Image burn though is a thing of the past as per LM.. we have TV Logos and Set-top box company logos which are omnipresent. Say a cricket match continuously goes on for a day (or 5!), I for one am scared about the Image burn. I've noticed a few Plasmas with image burn of the respective connections logos like Airtel in a Vivek's showroom.
Innoru vishayam, Plasmas are 42" or bigger. If the living room-seating sizes aren't suitable its particularly not advised so that we constantly don't increase the dioptre in our eyes. If you're lookng for 32" or so, Plasma velaikkavadhu.

Considering that we watch standard source most of the time compared to HD source, which is the better bet? Does standard source input (movies, sports) look better in Plasma?
SD suits LEDs better. And, if you pick up any of the Samsung 5 Series LEDs, Media Playback is a pleasure. No hassles at all. Plays whatever you feed it in a USB. Personally, I find the image a weeny-bit grainy even after calibrating and everything on my Plasma, even when I watch HD stuff. Don't know why!

At a store, the rep showed me a photo in a Sony model and then the same in the VT30. The Sony showed some detail in the background while in the VT30, it was too dim to be visible. I asked him if the settings were different and if that made the difference but he said the settings were the same. Ore conpees...
No idea about this. AFAIK, photo viewing is a much simpler and cozier in a Viera, because we can directly plug Memory cards and read Raw images, etc. I believe the technology is a bit more advanced in Panasonic. And, Plasma's flexibility in adjusting the PQ is unmatched. Its almost an Image editor inside it. We can adjust the look and feel of any movie, better than any other TV, I am sure!

I(*): Gaming - for the life of me, i can't understand why grown up men indulge in things like gaming, WWF etc.
:rotfl2: I don't follow F1. Its ridiculous.
Jokes apart, Gaming has come a real long way. I feel, its grown up along with me.
Dad used to take me to his office, during my Primary education times and I used to play DOS games, like Copter crash. We got a brick game and stuff. We moved on to theme parks with the Japan-Singapore modelled Virtual gaming -- With a Steering wheel and a Bike Handle, etc. Slowly, it evolved to a Video game using RGB output and IC cassettes. Mario, Tetris, etc. Contra, Cricket 97 and so on. Then it happened. Sega. Nintendo GamBoy. Sony PS1. It was magical. We were just entering teenage and the graphics were mindblowing. The PC got Windows XP, and we had all sorts of gaming parallel to this world. PS2 happened. Now PS3 has bluray/3D gaming. Its so much advanced. Its not the same stupid things a kid of my era used to play. It may seem way too exaggerating, but thats the truth! From the time I had played Arkonoid in a small hand-held device, playing Need For Speed Hot Pursuit with those 3D Glasses in Blur, its been quite a long, dramatic journey I'd say. And there are rumors already about Sony releasing a PS4 next year. Yeah, I know even my Dad doesn't care.

B(K) If you are going to use your Plasma in a brightly lit living room then I would advise against it..Plasma are great for dedicated home theater systems and with TV manufactures investing heavily on LED now the choice is no brainier...with calibration LED tvs can be made to show better dark levels.

Indian Manufacturers are releasing compelling tablets day by day. While there is nothing to celebrate about 10 inch tablets, the 7 inch tablets are almost flooding. Followed by Olive, HCL Me Tablet, Reliance, Beetel(Airtel), iBall, HCL has released a new model - HCL Me Tablet X1 in the ME tablet line up. This is having much better spec and good pricing.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/personal-tech/gadgets-special/HCL-launches-tablet-Rs-10490/articleshow/10342450.cms

While this tablet is yet to reflect in hclstore.in (http://www.hclstore.in/pages/-Tablet-PCs-Handheld-Devices-HCL/pgid-35902.aspx), the corporate News Section (http://www.hclinfosystems.in/news223.htm) has good info on specs.

The X1 is competitively priced at Rs. 10,490 and also enables an exclusive access to the ME App store which has over 10000 applications capturing the latest and the best android apps in the world for the X1 users. Powered by the Android OS 2.3, the light and portable ME Tablet is packed with special local applications, enabling a converged solution for mobile computing and entertainment needs with 34+ ready to use applications. The X1 offers an 800X480 Pixel Capacitive Screen, Cortex A 8, 1Ghz processor  with high performance and low power CPU. The tablet comes with a 2 MP Camera and 512 MB storage capacity with an internal memory of 4GB expandable to 32GB. The internet experience on the tablet is something to look forward to with the 7” screen along with Full High Definition 1080 pixel video (playback) support. It has a strong 3500 mAH battery and one of the only products in the market with an option of data connectivity through USB Dongles. Also there will be Flash Support through Adobe 10.3.

The small minuses i see are display resolution and battery. Should have been 1024 x 800 & ~4500mAH, respectively. But still not bad. For the price 10.5K, this is the best option, as of today  ( seeing the speed of tablet launhces :D ) Lets wait for reviews...

8 to 10 feet should be ok. I'm watching a 50" from 10 feet and it is absolutely fine.

Reg. SD, try to demo TV channels in a plasma and decide. Ask the sales person to switch off the lights above TV.

I bought "Sony KDL-52NX800 52-inch 1080p 240Hz LED Edge-Lit LCD HDTV, Black" on last thanksgiving day at Sears for 1500$ after sale. It comes with Wi-Fi connectivity, As you people pointed out, the quality on TV shows (especially live HD Sports telecasting) is too good to experience. At the same time, Blu-ray DVD quality also top notch. Last week end we watched Dark Night in Blu-ray. Awesome experience. But watching non HD channels is simply worst. You would start counting the dots all over the screen when the program is not worth to watch. Not sure how Plasma TVs could give much better movie experience. I yet to watch movies on Plasma and compare. I didn't buy PS3 yet to experience games and so-far performance on Wii games is OK.

For typing in tamil, tamil visai is there but its very shabby. If you root the device(void warranty!) there are some paid apps in market, they work like google translitration, you type in english and press 'convert' button, it becomes tamil

For viewing websites with tamil fonts, like vikatan, thatstamil, there is no way except using opera browser.
(type about:config in ur Opera addressbar and enable bitmap fonts, that is, there is a last item in the menu - "Use Bitmap fonts for complex scripts", select 'Yes' for that )

Rsubras,

delicate possision

I tried to compare all 3 mobiles, flipkart didnt have Nokia 500 at all!, gsmarena didnt allow to compare more than 2 mobiles at a time. at last, my fav site pdadb allowed it!

http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer&id1=3054&id2=3046&id3=2692&id4=2707

As you hav brought Nokia in comparision, i get many questions. Today mobile is more than a mobile, its not just mobile phone but mobile computer. Apps are heart of smartphones. Nokia's Ovi store is not on high heels. So if u dont want hot new apps and want to use ur phone just like how it was used 5 years before, just limiting to calls sms songs video photo camera and thevery basic apps like calculater calender etc, then Nokia is OK, Otherwise we can eliminate it from comparision.

Actually there are other reasons for that, too. After u spend 9.5K, what u get is a phone with less battery capacity just 1100mAH, that too with a 1 GHz cpu battery will drain soon, and no front camera, no LED Flash for the rear 5MP Camera, and a small screen - 3.2" (compared to other both 3.5") and lower resolution than dell xcd35.

But some how, i am not finding a phone with the resolution of dell phone(800x480) even in 15K android phones. So nobody is interested in a resolution slightly higher than iPhone3?!? Ok, thats a decision you have to make... I suggest you go to some mobile shop and experience the resolution of dell phone.

Comparing btw Motorola fire and Dell XCD35, i find Motorola winning in some areas like 800MHz, good camera 5MP with LED Flash and also a front camera, battery capacity is higher(1540mHAh as compared with dell's 1250 mAH) So these are advantages.

But Dell wins in stunning display resolution and an untouchable price, just nobody gives such a good phone at this price, anywhere in the world, period.

I have added Samsung Galaxy S LCD I9003 (Midnight Black) in the pdadb list. Its retailing for 17.5K in flipkart. Somehow thats a better phone for the price and in case u r ready to increase ur budget u can consider this phone.

Now as a user of Dell i also should tell its minuses, right? The speaker volume is not very high though its not bad, and even the headphone sound is also not high, I have samsung metro which has the same volume as dell in speakerphone mode, but it will blast if u hear in headphones. I guess the sound amp in dell is not that powerful, and maybe wantedly kept so considering battery life. And you cannot play hd video of 1024p resolution, but anyways all youtube videos of common resolution plays well.

A small issue:- And, internal flash memory is slightly an issue with both the phones(512mb RAM is not an issue) . When you download apps, the internal mem 512mb flash will be full soon, and not all apps are movable to SD card, so y have to keep only important apps in internal mem. There is a solution to this. Root ur phone and u get access to move all apps to SD Card so that u will never face memory issue. But i dont reccomend that as it voids ur warranty( I have rooted  ) But anyways this is not a big issue and the phone will not slowdown even if the internal flash is full. Another option is, keep the APK file of the apps with big size, in SD card. install them only when u need and then uninstall it. This way you dont need to root the phone.

So there i have said both good and bad, now you can make a choice :D

(Here is the flipkart comparision page, it doesn't have Nokia 500 - http://www.flipkart.com/mobiles/compare?ids=MOBDFJPAGFXZMNCH,MOBCTM5TKCZG6HTV,MOBC V6QCF9AQU7A4,MOBCVWAVYVZUYH5C )

For viewing websites with tamil fonts, like vikatan, thatstamil, there is no way except using opera browser. (type about:config in ur Opera addressbar and enable bitmap fonts, that is, there is a last item in the menu - "Use Bitmap fonts for complex scripts", select 'Yes' for that )
Thanks Sakala. Doesnt render quite smoothly. But the phone (Samsung Galaxy SII) is great, GREAT otherwise.

Rsubras,

delicate possision

(Here is the flipkart comparision page, it doesn't have Nokia 500 - http://www.flipkart.com/mobiles/compare?ids=MOBDFJPAGFXZMNCH,MOBCTM5TKCZG6HTV,MOBC V6QCF9AQU7A4,MOBCVWAVYVZUYH5C )

so kind of you sakala......... after reading your thorough write up, i had DELL in my mind while going to the mobile shop but since it was not available at the UNIVERCEL where i went and also due to the some pre-sales talk, ended up buying Motorola FIRE (Qwerty version). When I checked it out online during my 4th sem or so, it was incredibly good :roll:Venki, Notion Ink is the rare answer to those who worry that India doesn't do OEM product development. Though nothing is great innovation, its nice to see an group of IIM grads did something early in 2009 which all the giant OEMs lie Acer Motorola HP and other are doing only in 2011. Notion Ink Tablets ware released in 2011 beginning, its not doing very well and the tablet will work mainly for developers and hackers becos there is no good tech support like the normal OEMs. They are available for sale in flipkart. Price is not less than any other 10 inch tablets available in market.

Primarily, I want it to go in with my existing Analog 5.1 ch speakers. Media Players don't allow sound transmission via their hardware. They simply send both Audio/Video through HDMI. TVs cannot output 5.1 ch surround sound. It can only give stereo. So, this is the only way out in case I want to retain all my setup. Correct me if I'm wrong

wizzy
17th October 2011, 11:47 AM
Media players don't have DACs nor the Philips Bluray player to process sound..Bluray players with DACs would cost 15-20k and they come with Analog connections...how have you connected the speakers in your current setup? is it part of a HTIB?
if you have a HTIB you can connect its coxial to your streaming/Philips player for 5.1 and then connect the HDMI from the player to your TV for the picture.
with the current Bluray disc prices most of the time you will be playing demo discs and standalone players aren't meant to play d/w mkvs due to profile mismatches.

Doing just one small thing, but that one thing will be main attraction - thats something apple is an expert of. Google, at one side got tremendous benefit of making Android open source, it attracted lot of developers. But even after getting good profits out of OEM sales, still google is too careless in furthering the platform. Google let that like linux, where only open source enthusiasts nurtured the OS further. Added to that, the bugs and fragmentation. becos of this, even if google wanted, it cannot implement an high CPU intensive AI app like Siri. That would need dual core CPU and google cannot force all android phone owners to go in ONLY for dual core.

Added to that, the support ecosystem for android devices is horrible. Even in US, android owners doesn't know whom to contact in case of technical problems - Google? or carrier? or OEM? In reality none of them offers good support. Android may reach only to tech youth and seniors wont even touch android. Now imagine how good the iPhone 3GS sales will be in US, there its free! only the talktime charges.

These are the ugly things about android.

Google has released Android 4.0. biggest highlight is the tablet and phone version of OS is fused into same. This means, hereafter, there is no difference btw fone and tablet apps, all are same. That is good news for tablet users.

Also Indic font support is added (http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-4.0.html) so that default android browser itself is enuf to view tamil webpages.

Support for Indic fonts (Devanagari, Bengali, and Tamil, including the complex character support needed for combining glyphs) in WebView and the built-in Browser

Also, 2D Hardware Acceleration is enabled so that browsing will be smooth. Even tamil font loading will be smooth.

That is only for viewing within browser. Typing, and displaying tamil outside browser etc, is still not enabled. But Hindi is added  You can just swipe the space bar and the keypad changes to hindi.

But these benefits are ONLY for those who are gonna buy Android 4.0 phones/tablets  Others have to wait for Cyanogenmod

Venki, Android supports moving apps to SDC from 2.1 itself but handful of developers are lazy to enable that feature! That means, when developers are building and packing an app to upload in market, they shud mention in compile time itself to enable 'moving to SDC' feature. THis is not enabled by default, and very imp.apps like Gmail, Maps etc cannot be moved to SDc.

But What is the need for a Goundamani dialogs app (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.byminerva.soundboard.goundamani) and Vadivelu Ringtones App (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.uk.vadivelu.ringtones) to run in critical phone memory?!? Becos of this, rare phone memis wasted.

If you root the phone then you can move even the stock apps like Gmail Maps etc. But most of us doesn't do this! So I download the APK of some apps and install them only when needed and then uninstall it. Apps installing automatically in SDC and apps movable to SDC, no problem, they will happily stay in SD Card.

So, to answer ur question, Yes, (most) apps are movable to Sd Card!

Sathya, I bought a Nikon D3100 earlier this year. It is an excellent camera at an affordable price. But LM also has a point, I haven't used it as much as I would have liked to. For quick snaps, point and shoot cameras are the best, SLR's are kinda bulky to operate.

If you want a compromise between both (or in other words best of both worlds), you can go for mirrorless SLR camera. It is a still developing market but the reviews I read have been positive. One of my colleague got a Sony camera and he liked it very much.

SLR is best when you are really dedicated to taking pictures or keen on learning photography. The problem with me was I was both keen and lazy at the same time, so I ended up buying a SLR and not using it. :(

LM has a point. The Semi-SLR cameras, as they are fondly called are a better bet.
Major plus point being HD video capability. Also, less of bulk.
Also live view, comes with most Beginner-level SLRs, not in the classic ones like D70 or Canon Rebel versions.
Apart from that, they have a multipurpose lens with a good range. Instead of a kit-lens or maybe even another telephoto lens could possibly offer in an SLR. Out-of-the-box, these semi-SLRs can give you a greater capability to shoot.

Panasonic Lumix has a Z series. They are the best in the class.
Nikon P500 and Canon Powershot G are other options.
In Venkkiram's line of thought, if you think on buying a SLR if you get into the rage, maybe you can go for inexpensive solution Kodak Z series cameras. They retail around 10k INR.

Happy shooting!

1. Batt life - a.always keep display to lowest brightness. b.Download this app - SuperBox and go to Task Killer & kill the unused tasks. Try some apps like battery juice etc

2. Customer support

3.
a. No idea of profiles, but what are u trying to do with profiles etc. In Android, There is nothing like profiles in Nokia where u can set up the silent mode, vibration etc. If you want to keep personal data, there are apps which allow to keep passwords.

b. No Speed dial, instead you can keep icons of ur fav contacts on screen. one touch will dial them. for that, Long press the screen and you will get a menu, select "Shortcut" and select "Direct Dial" it will ask you to chose one contact. Likewise you select as many contacts till there is space in screen.

c. no idea! google aandavar!

d. the music apps which comes with phone is very basic. get some player app from market

e. selecting means? hilighting?!? "longpress" in the text box, u will get a menu.

virtual keyboard - u dont need to enable and all! suppose in web browser, open google, just touch the search box, keypad will pop up. press somewhere or back button, it will hide

Did you happen to see them in showroom? Buy whichever looks good to your eyes. Samsung is better, if you ask me.

RS,

i dont think android has automatic brightness sensor. maybe ur model may support. kindly check market if any apps are there..

reg the direct dial, i always keep them in the last screen so that i dont touch them accidentally.Another option is, keep a folder for this and keep the shortcuts inside that! it seems some phones (HTC Sense, Samsung Captivate and Vibrant, Motorola Droid X) have the speed dial number options u ask for - http://www.androidcentral.com/adding-numbers-speed-dial

LM, i am not a fan of android phone, i use that mainly for apps, messaging and email. If you buy a high end device you may have more comfort. anyways, Android apps makes it a powerful mini computer cum communication device. If I buy a device like Samsung Galaxy Note, which is a 5.3 inch smartphone, i will use that whole day for both calls and computing. it will partially replace my laptop!

Rsubras, try disabling "always connect to mobile data" option in the mobile networks menu.. It has helped me to increase my battery life for upto 2 days... but the disadvantage push applications will not work and auto brightness is fine with 2.3 manual brightness will only drain your battery further
