Hi all,

For me the golden TFM period was the one between 1955 and 965. Just have a look at the type and variety of songs, singers and the MDs of that period, not to speak of lyricists.

GR, S V Venkatraman, T Chalapathi Rao, S Rajeswar Rao, Master Venu (all three telugu composers who have done well in tfm too), T G Lingappa, S M S Naidu, R Sudarsanam, R Govardanam (who ass later part of the VR group), VR , KVM, AM Raja (He's given music only to around six or seven movies, but what songs! Then Nilavu, alyana Parisu), T R Papa, S Dakshinamurthi, V Dakshinamurthi, Veda (He's given some fine original nos like in Parthiban Kanavu and Anbu Enge - Dingiri Dingale meenachi dingiri dingale).

And singers: Male: Tiruchi Loganathan, Seergazhi, TMS, CSJ, PBS, AMR, Ghantasala, T A Mothi, A L Raghavan, S D Sundaram (for more variety J P Chandrababu, S C Krishnan - he had a unique voice, didn'e he?).

Females: MLV, PLeela, Jikki, PS, SJ, LRE, AP Komala, Jamuna Rani, T S Bagavathi, Sarojini, P Bhanumathi and others.

Lyricists: Udumalai, KDSanthanam, Pattukkottai, KD, Ku Ma Balasabramaniam, Ka Mu Sheriff, Ku Sa Krishnamurthi, Suradha, Vaali, Alangudi Somu, Mayavanathan and many others.

They all had their distinctive styles, at least most of them. Melody ruled the roost. The blending of BGM and lyrics was simply amazing, and people listen to these nos even now and appreciate them!

For me this was the golden period - 1955 to 1965 - without doubt.

I am sorry I missed out another great lyricist of that period - Maruthakaasi - who has given us innumerable rhyming and meaningful songs. Somewhere I had read he had written the most no of film songs after KD during that golden period. Let me list a few:

1. Mullai Malar mele Moiikum vandu Poole (the lines end with le almost throughout) - from the film Uthama Puthiran sung by TMS and PS (According to me among the very best duet by this incomparable and made for each other singing duo).

2. Manapparai maadu katti Maayavarm Eru Pooti from Makkalaippetra Magarasi - TMS's solo with names of various TN towns being interspersed beautifully

3. Kaaviyama Nenjin Oviyama Athan Jeeviyama Deiveega Kaathal Chinnama - PS and CS Jayaraman from Paavai Vilakku - a great duet and the shenoy interlude by KVM is outstanding, equal to similar use of the north indian 'naadaswaram' by VR

Maruthakaasi cannot be forgotten.

மெத்த மகிழ்ச்சி NOV மற்றும் ஹப்பைச்சார்ந்த அனைவருக்கும் பாராட்டுக்கள். தமிழ்த் திரை இசை உலகில் புதிய பரிணாமங்களைக் கண்ட கால கட்டத்தைத் துவக்கியிருக்கிறீர்கள். புதியதைத் துவங்கும் போது அதன் ஆய்வும் புதியதாக இருக்கும். வினதா அவர்கள் மிகவும் அருமையானதோர் பாடலை அளித்திருக்கிறார்கள். அவர்களுக்கும் பாராட்டுக்கள்.

நம் பங்கிற்கு இதோ முற்றிலும் புதிய பாடல். மூன்று பெண்கள் திரைப்படத்தில் ஏ.எம்.ராஜா ஜிக்கி (பெண் குரல் ஜிக்கி எனத் தான் நினைக்கிறேன், அல்லது கே.ராணியாகக் கூட இருக்கலாம்) பாடிய இனிமையான பாடல். திரை இசைத் திலகம் கே.வி.மகாதேவன் இசை. தனிமையிலே இனிமை காண முடியுமா பாடலின் பல்லவியைப் போன்று கிட்டத் தட்ட ஒலிக்கும். மிக மிக அபூர்வமான இப் பாடல் அதிகமாக வானொலியில் கேட்க முடிவதில்லை. அதற்காகவே இங்கே இணைப்புத் தரப்படுகிறது. அதிக பின்னணி இசைக் கருவிகளின்றி ஹார்மோனியம் அக்கார்டின் மட்டும் ஒலிப்பது சிறப்பு.

மற்றொரு இனிமையான பாடல். இடம் பெற்ற படம் மறுமலர்ச்சி. 1956ம் ஆண்டு வெளிவந்தது. நானும் ஒரு மனிதனா என சோகத்தோடு துவங்கும் பாடல் முடியும் போது நம்பிக்கையோடும் மகிழ்வோடும் முடியும். ஏ.எம்.ராஜாவுடன் பெண் குரல் - ரத்னமாலாவாக இருக்கலாம். பாடல் வரிகளில் பாடகியின் பெயர் வருகிறது. தம்முடைய கடந்த கால தவறினை எண்ணி வருந்தி பின்னர் அத்தவறைத் திருத்திக் கொள்வதாக முடிவெடுத்து நம்பிக்கையோடு தொடர்வதாக பாடலின் வரிகள் அமைந்துள்ளன.

T.Chalapathirao and T.G.Lingappa are extremely talented musicians and they were popular in telugu and kannada respectiviely.

Chalapathirao till today is remembered only for then unnum vandu and the meenda sorgam songs
but he had done many songs one such melody is this

1. Thandhai yaaro thaayum yaaro from Yaar Paiyan

Yaarpaiyan had Daisy rani as poori and Gemini,Savithiri as the lead
and NSK & MAdhuram playing Gemini's parents.

1956 ம் ஆண்டில் குலதெய்வம் படத்திற்கு நான்கு பாடல்களை எழுதிய நமது கவிஞர் PADDUKKODDAI KALYAANASUNTHARAM அடுத்து படித்த பெண் என்ற படத்துக்கு இரண்டு பாடல்களை எழுதினர் .

அதில் ஒரு பாடலை இங்கு தருகிறேன்

பாடல் :

காப்பி ஒண்ணு எட்டணா, கார்டு சைசு பத்தணா
காண வெகு ஜோராயிருக்கும், காமிராவைத் தட்டினா !

பிள்ளை குட்டி கூட நிண்ணு பெரிதாகவும் எடுக்கலாம்
பிரியம் போல காசு பணம் சலிசாகவும் கொடுக்கலாம் .

மல்லுக் கட்டி அழைக்கவில்லை மனமிருந்தா வந்திடலாம்
வயிறெரிந்த பேர்வழிங்க வந்த வழி சென்றிடலாம்

தண்டவாளம் விட்டிறங்கி தத்தளிக்கும் எனஜினைப் போல்
கொண்டவன் தனை மறந்து திண்டாடும் மங்கையரின்
குட்டு வெளியாகிடும் ஸ்டில்லுங்க - கையில்
துட்டு இருந்தா ஸ்டெடியா நில்லுங்க

எந்தப் போஸில் வேணுமென்னாலும் எடுத்துத் தரேனுங்க - ஆனா
எல்லோருக்கும் ஸ்டில்லை மட்டும் காட்டிடாதீங்க

தனியே வந்தாலும் கூட்டமா வந்தாலும்
சார்ஜ் ஒண்ணு தான் , வாங்க ஒரு சான்ஸ் அடிச்சுப் பாக்க
வாருங்க !

புகைப் படம் எடுக்கும் ஒரு தொழிலாளி பாடும் பாடல் இது !

இந்தப் பாடலைப் பற்றி ஒரு சுவையான வரலாறு ஒன்று இருக்கிறது .

இந்த சுவையான சம்பவத்தை எனக்கு தொலை பேசியில் சொன்னவர்

பெண்ணாடம் நீல மேகம் அவர்கள் !

அவருக்கும் பட்டுக்கோட்டையாரிடம் ஒரு அளவற்ற பக்தி உண்டாம் !

அவர் சொன்ன இந்தப் பாடலைப் பற்றிய தகவல் :

இந்த படித்த பெண் படத்தை சியாமளா பிக்சர்ஸ் , நளினி பிக்சர்ஸ் என்ற இரு நிறுவனங்கள் கூட்டாகத் தயாரித்தன .தயாரிப்பாளர் வைத்தியநாத அய்யர் என்பவர் .

இவரிடம் நடிகர் நம்பி ராஜன் கவிஞரை அறிமுகப் படுத்தினார் . இந்த இரண்டு பாடல்களுக்கு அய்யர் அவர்கள் 150 ரூபாய் தருவதாகப் பேசி பாடல்களை எழுதச் சொன்னாராம் .

அடுத்த நாளே கவிஞர் பாடல்களை எழுதிக் கொடுத்து விட்டாராம் .

ஆனால் பல நாட்கள் பணம் கைக்கு வந்து சேர வில்லையாம் .

அய்யர் வீட்டுக்கு பல நாட்கள் நடையாக நடந்தாராம் .

ஒரு நாள் ஐயரது வீட்டுக்கு கவிஞர் சென்ற போது '' உட்கார் '' என்று சொல்லி விட்டு உள்ளே போன அய்யர் நீண்ட நேரம் வெளியே வரவிலையாம் .
அதனால் கவிஞரும் உள்ளே சென்று பார்க்கலாம் என்று உள்ளே நுழைந்த போது அய்யர்

'' வெளியே நில்லு ''

என்று அதட்டிப் பேசினாராம் !

தீண்டாமைக் கொடுமை உச்சத்தில் இருந்த காலம் அது !

இதைக் கேட்டு சினம் கொண்ட கவிஞர்

'' தாயால் வளர்ந்தேன், தமிழால் அறிவு பெற்றேன்
நாயே ! நேற்று நான் உன்னை நடுத் தெருவில் சந்தித்தேன்,
நீ யார் என்னை நில் என்று சொல்ல ? ''

என்று அறம் பாடி விட்டு இந்தக் கவிதையை ஒரு துண்டுத் தாளில் எழுதி அதை அவர் வீட்டுக் கதவிடுக்கில் செருகி விட்டு வந்து விட்டாராம் .

அதைப் படித்துப் பார்த்த அய்யர்,

இவன் ஒரு பிறவிக் கவிஞன், இவன் அறம் பாடி விட்டால் நாம் நன்றாக வாழ முடியாது

என்று நினைத்து ஒரு நண்பர் மூலம் பணத்தைக் கொடுத்தனுப்பினாராம் .

இந்தப் படித்த பெண் படம் வெளி வந்ததா எனத் தெரியவில்லை .

இந்த இரண்டு பாடல்களும் நமக்குக் கிடைக்கவில்லை !

நண்பர்கள் யாரிடமாவது இருந்தால் நல்கும் படி கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறேன் .

This song "Alaipola Thendral" from the film Thozhan is by PBS and PS. Among the many duet songs sung by this duo this easily is one of the most enchanting ones. Listen to the sweetness of P Suseela's voice especially when she sings in virutham style "azhagaka idhazhgalaiye .........vilaimadhiayaaaaaa kaatchiyinbam vizhigalukee thandu maalai velaiyile intha cholayile" I keep listening to this
part. And PBS is equally good.

My personal fav. duet of this pair! Wonderful BGM by the great GR. This is among the least known song by this duo. Can TFMlover or others throw more light on this little known movie.

Hi Nidhi,

Have seen in another website that "Thozhan" had R S Manohar as hero. As you may be aware he acted as "Kathanayagan" in his formative cinematic career before switching to "Yes, boss" villainous roles as sidekick of MN Nambiar in MGR films. May be someone like TFMlover could give more info on this movie which, as far as my knowledge is concerned, was released in the late 1950s.

Also if you get the chance hear this melodious no. "Kaniyo Paago Karkando" a rare, perhaps only, duet by MLV and PBS from "Karpukkarasi", also set to tune by the great G Ramanathan.
It's another outstanding song, not heard much these days.

Dear Ramaswamy,

Both the songs that you had mentioned were indeed picturised and included in the respective movies. Kannethire thondrinal in Iruvar Ullam appears during the first night sequence of NT - Sarojadevi. The song has the inimitable majestic walk of NT.

Ohoho Manidhargale is the opening song/scene of Padithaal Mattum Pothumaa where NT would be seen riding a horse. Again it would be style personified.

Surprised that you had not watched the movies.

Watched "Policekaran Magal"

A number of firsts for me
first movie with Chandrababu I saw, was a delight to see him and Manorama
especially during their "Poranthalum" duet...too cute, their expressions and the lyrics...I feel nowadays that I've stopped paying attention to lyrics, they seem repetitive or seem to collect pleasant sounding/situation appropriate words and put them in order...of course there (Thank goodness) many exceptions to this!!

first duet I saw that it was sis/bro even in sad verison

Overall came out thinking what a wretched character that Balaji had to play
everyone seemed so damn helpless especially Vijyakumari and of course the overly weak nature attributed to females, their overpowering sorrows and due fatal illness...haha cynicism much?

But the songs :2thumbsup:

"Pon Enbane Siru Poo Enbane"...PBS's voice is so deep and melodious, such a haunting quality to it...Janaki's voice timid and modest...beautiful! I liked how their perspective views of their marriage were pictured, with religious figures for Vijayakumari while for Balaji, he only imagines said heroine in various outfits...saree,stylish salwar,skirt and blouse.

"Indha Mandrathil" song is even in the sad version very lilting and sweet...inextinguishable in its optimistic sounding..would be an injustice to not mention how wonderful P.Susheela is! :notworthy:

The major pathos song "Kannale Neer Etharku" I feel the poignant lyrics totally overtook the song, in a good way though.

Maybe because it was a tv movie...missed the popular" Nilaavukku En Mel Enaadi Kovam" a fave of mine ...knew this song long before...bgm flute has the perfect sprightly touch

Tks a million for "Kangalinaal Kaanbadellam", a wonderful solo by PS. Am hearing this song for the first time in my life, and it blew me away. Like you said it's great singing with gusto by PS and the humming of TMS, as you say, is brilliant. BTW why was this song not picturised?

And talking of humming, as you say this must be the only time TMS has only been used for humming in a song, but as you might have seen he joins PS for a brief while, a sec or so, after each stanza. And therein lies MSV's imagination, I guess.

Normally we have been used to TMS singing and L R Eswari used for humming, in unforgettable nos. like Pavalakodiyile in Panam Padaithavan and Kallellam Maniikka in Aalayamani. This song is the exact opposite.

And once again I'm taking the chance to remind you of your promise of "Vaazhkai Odam" video.

Was a real enjoyment, reading your juxtaposition of "Vazhkai Oru Odam" song and Silappadhikaram Epic, I know of it yes (actually did not know it was Jain)....was too good, a nautical delight!!

Hi TFM Lover and others,

There is a lovely PBS solo "Azhaghana Malare" in "Thendral Veesum". Anybody has the video of this song. Whenever I hear this no. I feel it is one of the few songs which does not have the VR touch of those days, sounding a little different from others composed around that period. Was it composed for this film or by some other MD for another film, like the AMR-Jikki duet in "Gulebagavali" by KVM, and included in this film. For example the famous "Paadinaar Kavignar" chorus no. had been originally composed by VR for "Nichaya Thamboolam" and used in "Thendral Veesum".

What abt "Kuyil koovi thuyilezhuppa' by Soolamangalam, a beautiful no. in KB's "Naanal"? Superbly sung. And the other similar style song in "Konjum Salangai" with the great Karukurichi Arunachalam's Nadaswaram providing the ideal fillip. "Orumayudan Ninadhu Thirvuvadi". Very soulfully sung. And she has sung this song too, is it not, "avarkum enakkum uravu kaati" from the KVM no. in "Naalu Veli Nilam". She was more oriented towards proper Carnatic music "katcheris" than background singing, I think.

Just been going through the old posts in this lovely thread and am finding real gems. One example is the superb PS solo "Ennathan Ragasiyamo" in "Idhaya Kamalam" Also have not heard the last stanza before and like you say we have to salute Dr Santharam. What a song! But this PS solo and the other equally good one "Malargal Nanaindana Paniyale" have been sidelined by the one and only PS solo "Unnai Kaanada Kannum Kannalla" Add these songs to the PS-PBS no. "Thol Kanden Thole Kanden" and the other PBS-PS no. "Nee Pogumidamellam Naanum Varuven Po Po Po" and you see how "Mama" KVM has equalled the score by Madan Mohan in the Hindi version "Mera Saaya" which came before the Tamil film, I guess. KVM's contribution to TFM has not been acknowledged to the full, I feel.

Hi TFM Lover,

I have heard this song a lot in my younger days, male is S C Krishnan, is it not? But I'm amazed Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi is the female singer. Cannot ever believe she has sung this peppy no, as she is known to be trained in proper singing carnatic style, like MLV who sung a few peppy nos in the late 40s and early 50s, I guess.

Hi,
Just listen to the following song. Can u believe it is TMS with K Rani. But it is according to the link http://as01.coolgoose.com/music/song.php?id=501792&PHPSESSID=832af
it's from the film "Kalyani" released in 1952 and music by C R Subbaraman. I never knew CRS has used TMS as he died when TMS was just an upcoming singer hunting for chances that came his way with Thooku Thookki presumably after CRS's death before the release of his magnum opus "Devdas". Contrary to general opinion TMS has sung in a very low pitch much before he hit the high octaves literally and figuratively going by this song "Ini Pirivillaamale Vaazhvom Naam Ulagile - T M S & K Rani - Kalyani (1952)".

Thanks a lot for sharing such a wonderful and a rare song. Never heard this song. TMS sir voice, inimitable. Kettukonde irukkalaam pondru thondrugirathu. NT's smile and acting can't be described. Nowadays, nobody stares at the camera for so long, even if they do, we can't watch them.:) Again the sustaining shots makes it a pleasant watch and very friendly to our eyes, instead of frequent cut every fraction of seconds makes our eyes tired. Gone were the memorable days.
