‘Mankatha’ not in Mumbai but Chennai

Contrary to some media reports that held the ‘Mankatha’ cast is in Mumbai city shooting for the film in the famous Dharavi area, the director of the film Venkat Prabhu has said that it was only him and his crew went to scout for the locations. Ajith and other actors were not there for any job. No shooting happened in Mumbai.

Venkat Prabhu further said the next immediate schedule will happen only in Chennai and the Mumbai schedule will happen sometime later.

Another interesting information disclosed by Venkat Prabhu is that ‘Mankatha’ will have a short animation sequence that will be created with world class techniques. The sequence that will run for 3-5 minutes will be a highlight of the film according to Venkat Prabhu.

With the planned scheduled going little skewed will ‘Mankatha’ release on May 1 as announced? Considering the World Cup and IPL cricket seasons coming up, we think it will go beyond May.

Ajith was actively involved in the penning of the screenplay for Asal and will now do so for Billa 2. Director Vishnuvardhan had readied a screenplay for Billa 2 and had the approval of Wide Angle Creations to go ahead with the film.

However, Vishnu was busy with the Arya starrer Sarvam at that time and the project could not take off leading Ajith to sign up Venkat Prabhu’s Mankatha. Now, Vishnu is concentrating in a Telugu flick that has Pawan Kalayan playing the lead and hence he is not in a position to direct Ajith in Billa 2.

Following this, Ajith and Chakri Toleti, the director of Unnai Pol Oruvan, are jointly penning a new script for Billa 2. The project is expected to go on floors as planned in April or May this year.

Why did your film with Ajith get shelved?

I think the timing was wrong. When the offer came, I was in the final leg of Vaaranam Aayiram, in the post production stage. I needed some time to complete it and then unwind because it is a very personal and emotional film for me. But the producer would never give me time and pressurized me to give the script in a day, in a week which was not possible. That is the reason the project fell apart. Not because I had problems with Ajith. I am sure we will be working together in future. I like him a lot. Ajith is a tremendous hero and his mass fan following is something remarkable. Whenever I meet a cabbie or an auto driver or a petrol bunk employee, they ask me ‘Eppa thalai padam panna porenga?’ His reach is something remarkable. It will be interesting to work with Ajith.

nAn rating laam pOdalai (appraisal period over). Saw it, liked it. ambuttudhAn. One basic davut - How do people call a film over rated or under rated? Is there any generic rule or is it based on individual perception. Also, saying that this film is over rated because Ajith had given better performance in another film does not sound right for me. I just look at the context, relevance and aptness of his acting in the film (In-Scope). Out of scope (Other Films) why I should worry?

Yes he is a much capable actor but losses the battle often beacuse of not knowing what kind of role and script would suit him?

Yes....all the above 3 films are deserve to be there....But I feel these days ajith wants to do only action oriented fillms rather his strength is acting like a boy next door kind of role....example would be Kireedom,Mugavari,Kandukondaen kandukondaen,etc.

But Mankatha then Billa 2 then somewhere i red that he is going to do a Fantasy films then....bored of seeing him in these roles:roll:

Ajith stalls Billa 2 for Jayam Raja

The shooting of Mankatha, Ajith’s forthcoming release, is almost over, sources say. The film is directed by Venkat Prabhu and has a bevy of stars including Arjun, Trisha, Lakshmi Rai, Anjali and others. With this film nearing completion, there is a strong speculation that Ajith will move over to Billa 2.

But Billa 2 may not be Ajith’s next film. Yes, sources in Kollywood say that Ajith is thrilled over the script that Jayam Raja had narrated to him recently and want to complete the film’s shooting at one go before moving over to Billa 2. However, there is no official confirmation on this.

I am back to hub after very long gap.. the reason is obviously Ajith dissolving mandram.
very true he has unique fans.., mandram seems to be a place of people who wish to get popularity and get into politics. people started accepting movies which are good, and trash out the bad.. and true that ajith fans doesnt make movie run just for numbers or days.. unlike other fans. fan clubs have other ways to show their love and not necessary to have mandram.

‘Thala’ Ajith is celebrating his birthday today on May 1st and film fans feel proud of him. Ajith is consummate in his thoughts and actions even now after spending twenty years in Kollywood and completing 50 films. Even though he was launched via a Telugu film, the way Ajith blended with the mass of Tami Nadu is emotive.

Ajith’s debut film ‘Prema Pustakam’ was his first and last non-Tamil film. But for another cameo in the SRK starrer Hindi film ‘Ashoka’, Ajith spent all his energy and resources in entertaining the Tamil audience who are close to his heart.

Ajith success story is good for the records book. Probably he is the only ultimate star who made it big with sheer hard work and dedication. He never had any God Fathers to back him. If you notice most of the big stars of today, except Ajith, all others would have had a powerful or influential patron to help them in their early career days. Ajith got his first film ‘Amaravathi’ on merit. Even after that he was content with making slow progress by doing supportive roles and other important roles, there by learning.

If you look back in time, you will be surprised to know Ajith played a second hero to Vijay in ‘Rajavin Parvaiyile’ and to Prashanth in ‘Kalloori Vaasal’. All these made Ajith to be more determined and wait for his day. The day came in director Vasanth who showed a different Ajith in ‘Aasai’. Then came ‘Kadhal Kottai’ and Ajith rocketed never to look back.

Ajith’s conscious nurturing of his image or for that matter no-image was well received not just by his fans and other movie goers, but also high profile studios.

Once he got a stature, Ajith is even more careful with his life in films. This refinement has made him a favourite actor. When Amitabh Bachchan wanted to produce a Tamil film he produced ‘Ullasam’ with Ajith. When the Ambani’s Adlabs wanted to enter Tamil cinema market, it produced ‘Kireedam’ with Ajith. When the legendary ‘Billa’ starring Rajini was remade, it was Ajith was the hero of the first remake of the Super Star film. When the international banner Ayngaran wanted to be the direct producer of a Tamil film for the first time, it produced ‘Aegan’ with Ajith. Sivaji Films which gave the biggest blockbuster ‘Chandramuki’ with Rajinikanth, thought Ajith is next to him and produced ‘Aasal’.

The power of Ajith can be gauged from the fact that success and failures have not affected him any time. In 2006, ‘Varalaru’ was the highest grosser at the box office that year and Ajith did not sign films spree. When his ‘Aasal’ did not do expected business he did not sulk and he is returning with a killer of a film ‘Mankatha’.

20 years and 50 films is an achievement on any scale. That too not going out of fashion all these years is a glory. The days are going to be only better for Ajith. Ajith has announced that he will be dissolving his fan club and this matured and intelligent decision couldn’t have come at a better time. இன்றும் எனது விருப்பதற்காக எனது ரசிகர்களை பயன்படுத்த மாட்டேன் என தனது நற்பணி மன்றங்களை எல்லாம் களைத்து விட்டு இன்றும் தான் உண்டு தனக்கு பிடித்த சினிமா உண்டு என்று ஒதுங்கி வாழ்பவர் இன்று தனது 40 வயதில் அடியெடுத்து வைக்கிறார். அவரை பற்றிய 40 துளிகள் இங்கே...

1. தெலுங்கு படமான பிரேம புஸ்தகம் மூலம் திரையுலகிற்கு ( வருஷம் ) அறிமுகம் ஆனார்.

2. தமிழில் அமராவதி என்ற படம் மூலம் அறிமுகம் ஆனார். அத்திரைப்படத்தை அடுத்து பாசமலர்கள், பவித்ரா, ராஜாவின் பார்வையிலே என பல படங்களில் நடித்தார்.

3. தனக்கு எதிர்பார்த்த வெற்றி இல்லையே என தவித்தவர்க்கு ஆசை என்ற படத்தின் மூலம் வெற்றியை கொடுத்தவர் வஸந்த். அந்த படத்தை தயாரித்தவர் மணி ரத்னம்.

4. அடுத்தடுத்து பல படங்களில் நடித்தாலும் காதல் கோட்டை, காதல் மன்னன் போன்ற படங்களின் வெற்றியால் முன்னணி கதாநாயகனாக வலம் வர தொடங்கினார்.

5. 1998ம் ஆண்டு வெளிவந்த காதல் மன்னன் என்ற படத்திற்கு கிடைத்த பெரும் வரவேற்பை அடுத்து தமிழ்நாட்டில் உள்ள அனைத்து தரப்பு ரசிகர்களையும் கவர்ந்தார்.

6. அமர்க்களம் படப்பிடிப்பில் ஏற்பட்ட காதலால் ஷாலினியை 2000-ம் வருடம் திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டார். நட்சத்திரத் தம்பதியினருக்கு வாரிசு அனோஷ்கா என்ற குட்டி தேவதை.

7. தனது பெயருக்கும் முன்னால் எந்த பெயரையும் போட விரும்ப மாட்டார். ஆனால் அமர்க்களம் படத்தில் அல்டிமேட் ஸ்டார் என்ற பட்டத்தை கொடுத்தவர் சரண். அடுத்து சரண் இயக்கிய அசல் படத்தில் பட்டம் எதுவும் போட வேண்டாம் என அஜீத்தே நீக்க சொல்லிவிட்டார்.

8. ஏ.ஆர்.முருகதாஸ் இயக்கத்தில் வந்த வெற்றிப்படம் தீனா. படத்தில் தலை இருக்கும்போது வால் ஆடக்கூடாது.. நீ ஆடு தலை.. என்று வசனம் வரும். அன்று முதல் ரசிகர்களுக்கும் தல ஆனார் அஜீத்.

9. அவரது சினிமா வாழ்க்கையில் சர்ச்சைகளும் விடவில்லை. நியூ, மிரட்டல், நான் கடவுள், ஏறுமுகம் என பல படங்கள் இவர் கமிட் ஆகிவிட்டு கருத்து வேறுபாடால் நடிக்க முடியாது என்று கூறி விட்டார்.

10. வாலி, வில்லன், வரலாறு போன்ற படங்களில் இரண்டு/மூன்று வேடங்களில் நடித்தார். அப்படி நடித்த படங்கள் எல்லாம் ஹிட்.! ஆனந்தப் பூங்காற்றே, உன்னிடத்தில் என்னைக் கொடுத்தேன், நீ வருவாய் என போன்ற படங்களில் கௌரவ வேடத்திலும் நடித்திருக்கிறார்.

11. மனதில் பட்டதை அப்படியே பேசிவிடுவார். அதனாலேயே பொது நிகழ்ச்சியில் கலந்து கொள்வதை தவிர்த்து விடுவார். சமீபத்தில் கலந்து கொண்ட பாசத்தலைவனுக்கு பாராட்டு விழா என்ற நிகழ்ச்சியில் ஐயா.. அடிக்கடி ஏதாவது நிகழ்ச்சினு மிரட்டி வர சொல்றாங்கய்யா.. என்று மேடையில் முதல்வர் கருணாநிதியிடமே முறையிட்டார். அஜீத் பேச்சிற்கு மேடையில் இருந்த ரஜினி எழுந்து நின்று கை தட்டினார்.

12. இன்றும் சூப்பர் ஸ்டார் ரஜினிக்கு நெருக்கமானவர் அஜீத். ரஜினி நடித்த பில்லா படத்தின் ரீமேக்கில் அஜீத் தான் நடிக்க வேண்டும் என்று சிபாரிசு செய்தவர் ரஜினி.

13. கல்யாணத்திற்கு முன்பு புகைபிடிக்கும் பழக்கம் கொண்டவர். கல்யாணம் ஆனவுடன் தனது மனைவிக்காக சிகரெட்டை விட்டொழித்தார்.

14. சிம்பு, ஜீவா, ஆர்யா என தமிழ் திரையுலகின் அடுத்த தலைமுறை நாயகர்கள் ஃபேவரைட் எப்போதும் அஜீத் தான். அதிலும் சிம்பு ஒரு அஜீத் வெறியர்.

15. பல நாயகர்கள் தாங்கள் நடிக்கும் படங்களுக்கு நாயகியாக இவர் தான் வேண்டும் என்று சிபாரிசு செய்வார்கள். ஆனால் அஜீத் எப்போதும் நாயகி விஷயத்தில் தலையிடுவது இல்லை.

16. நேருக்கு நேர் படத்தில் அஜீத்தும் விஜய்யும் இணைந்து நடித்தனர். இருந்தாலும், கருத்து வேறுபாடு காரணமாக அஜீத் படத்திலிருந்து விலக, சரவணன் என்ற இளைஞரை அஜீத் நடித்த வேடத்தில் நடிக்க வைத்தார் இயக்குனர் வஸந்த். சரவணனுக்கு சினிமாவுக்காக சூட்டப்பட்ட பெயர் சூர்யா.

17. அஜீத்தும் விஜய்யும் இணைந்து நடித்த ஒரே படம் ராஜாவின் பார்வையிலே. அதன் பிறகு இருவருக்கும் என தனித்தனியாக ரசிகர்கள் கூட்டம் சேர, இணைந்து நடிப்பதைத் தவிர்த்தனர். இருவரும் தொழில்முறையில் போட்டியாளர்கள் என ஆகிவிட, அவர்களது ரசிகர்கள் தங்களுக்குள் மோதிக் கொண்டனர். மங்காத்தா படப்பிடிப்பில் விஜய்யும் அஜீத்தும் சந்தித்து கொண்டதிலிருந்து இன்றும் இருவரும் நெருங்கிய நண்பர்களாக இருந்து வருகிறார்கள்.

18. சுப நிகழ்ச்சிகளுக்கு போகிறாரோ இல்லையோ துக்க நிகழ்ச்சிகளில் நிச்சயம் கலந்து கொள்வார். சமீபத்தில் பாடகி சித்ராவின் குழந்தை நந்தனா இறந்ததற்கு நேரில் சென்று ஆறுதல் கூறினார்.

19. தனது 50வது படமான மங்காத்தாவில் ஜார்ஜ் க்லூனி போன்ற கெட்டப்பில் நடித்து வருகிறார். வாலி, வரலாறு என தான் கதாநாயகனாக நடித்த படத்தில் வில்லனாகவும் நடித்திருந்தாலும், மங்காத்தா படத்தில் வில்லனாக மட்டுமே நடித்து வருகிறார்.

20. சில மாதங்களுக்கு முன்பு நீங்கள் அரசியலில் ஈடுபட வேண்டும் என்று அஜீத் ரசிகர்கள் சிலர் கூறவே எனது பெயரை தவறாக உபயோகித்தால் ரசிகர் மன்றத்தை கலைத்து விடுவேன் என்று எச்சரித்தார். நடந்து முடிந்த சட்டப்பேரவை தேர்தலில் இவரது பெயர் தவறாக உபயோகப்படுத்தப்படவே தனது அனைத்து ரசிகர் மன்றங்களையும் கலைத்து விட்டார் அஜீத்.

21. அஜீத் ரசிகர் மன்ற கலைப்புக்கு கூறும் காரணம் மாறிவரும் காலகட்டத்தில் மக்கள் எல்லாரையும் உன்னிப்பாகக் கவனிக்கிறார்கள் என்பதைக் கருத்தில் கொண்டு, திரைப்படங்களுக்கு அப்பால் பொதுமக்களின் பார்வையிலும் கண்ணியமாக தென்பட்டால் மட்டுமே, நடிகருக்கும் அவரது ரசிகர்களுக்கும் கவுரவம் கிட்டும் என்பது என் நம்பிக்கை. அந்த கவுரவமும், எனது இந்த முடிவுக்கு ஆதரவு அளிக்கும் என் உண்மையான ரசிகர்களின் கருத்தும் மட்டுமே எனது இந்த பிறந்த நாளுக்கு உண்மையான பரிசாகும்!

அஜீத் 'தீனா' படத்தின் மூலம் ஏ.ஆர்.முருகதாஸை திரையுலகிற்கு இயக்குனராக அறிமுகம் செய்து வைத்தார். 'தீனா' நல்ல வரவேற்பை பெற்றது. அதன் பிறகு மீண்டும் அஜீத்திற்கு ஒரு கதை சொல்லி ஓகே வாங்கி வைத்திருந்தார் முருகதாஸ்.

கஜினி படத்திற்கு பிறகு ஆரம்பிக்க வேண்டிய படம் அது. முருகதாஸ் இந்தியில் 'கஜினி' இயக்கப் போனதாலும், அஜீத் தனது படங்களில் கவனம் செலுத்த ஆரம்பித்து விட்டதாலும் இருவரும் அமைதி காத்தார்களாம்.

Way2Online is back with a sensation update regarding Ajith’s next film Billa 2. Since long time we are waiting for the film to hit the floors and now we hear that the filmmakers have finalized the date.
Billa 2 will start shooting from June 20th, 2011 in Hyderabad. We hear that Ajith will be wrapping up all his prior commitments of Mankatha by this time and will move to Billa 2. As reported before Billa 2 will be a prequel to Billa and would focus on how David, an ordinary man from Tamil Nadu, becomes Billa, a dreaded underworld don.
Billa 2 stars Ajith in the titular character while Bollywood model Huma Qureshi has been choosed to play the female lead in the film. Bruna Abdullah, Prabhu, Rahman, Krishnakumar will be playing other supporting cast in the film.
Chakri Toleti is going to direct Billa 2. Billa 2 is to be produced by Wide Angle Creations in association with the Hinduja Group Company IN Entertainment.
Yuvan Shankar Raja has been roped up to compose music for Billa 2 and he has finished composing a couple of songs.

It is well known that Billa 2 will focus on how David, an ordinary man from Tamil Nadu, becomes Billa, a dreaded underworld don. Now Billa 2 team is on deep discussion on the look of Ajith for the film. Sources close to the team reveal that Ajith will sport the look of Marlon Brando in one of the latter’s black and white movies. The unit will soon take a photo shoot on this look with Ajith portraying such a look and the look will be confirmed only after the test shots.
Even in Mankatha Thala is sporting George Clooney look so sporting the look of Marlon Brando will be quite apt for the role in Billa 2 since the movie should portray him about twenty years younger! Ajith is going to loose weight for Billa 2 just to give the look as young as twenty years.

On one side, Thala fans across the globe are waiting for the audio and the film release of Mankatha directed by Venkat Prabhu. Meanwhile there is an update on his other project Billa 2. If observed one thing is commonly found between these two films, any guesses. The plot of both the films is based on don stories. Off course, Ajith will suit any role either a mass role or a student or a don…..
Here is something common between Billa-2 and James Cameron’s Avatar-2. The director of the film Chakri Toleti and cinematographer R.D. Rajashekar will be using EPIC Camera with 5K Resolution for shooting the film. Billa 2 will be the first Indian film to be shot using this High Resolution camera. It can be noted here that James Cameron is filming his Avatar-2 using the same camera. So now you are aware of what is common between Avatar 2 and Billa 2.
Director Chakri Toleti is currently busy with the pre production works and he even went on a trip to Hyderabad for location hunt.
So, shooting the film with EPIC Camera will surely add more international feel to the film.

After a long while, I was totally focussed on acting. What I mean to say is the production and direction departments of Mankatha were so well-organised that I didn't have to pitch in unlike some of my earlier projects. I was able to do full justice to my role,” says Ajith.

A lot of credit for that should go to director Venkat Prabhu, says Ajith. “He is the finest I've ever worked with. He is meticulous, treats every one on the sets with respect and has full control over all areas of filmmaking.”

Merely doing the most number of films a year doesn't necessarily prove the success of an actor and Ajith believes in this. For him, a good film every few years is satisfying and raises audience expectations. Billa was Ajith's last box office success. That happened in 2007, a year that also saw the release of his two other films — Aalwar and Kireedom — which didn't quite set the screens on fire. Then Aegan and Aasal released, again, not quite the kind of films one would expect from the actor. On the other hand, Billa was stylish and suave, reflecting Ajith in real life, minus the dark deeds of the film's hero.

Choosy about projects

Known to be choosy about his projects, Ajith didn't find any script/director worthy of his attention. In some instances, destiny decided otherwise (read: Gautam Menon, Vishnuvardhan, Bala) and projects didn't click the way he would have liked them to. Unperturbed, he turned his attention to personal and family matters — his daughter Anoushka had just got into kindergarten; he remodelled his house; wife Shalini was happy to have Ajith around the house; he got more time to take care of his parents' health; he could indulge in his favourite pastime of aeromodelling. The list was becoming endless. Till Venkat Prabhu happened and Mankatha sprang up from the director's storyboard.

What you will get to see is a very, very bad man in Vinayak,” explains Ajith.

Mankatha is all about betting, with the game of cricket forming the backdrop. “In fact, when Venkat narrated the story to me, he said there were five characters in the film, all bad men and one guy who was the worst. I play that character; you can call him protagonist or antagonist. He has in him that villainous streak that would probably make you recoil. After a long time in my career, I thoroughly enjoyed doing this role. Something about the character interested me and I was sure Venkat would do full justice to the way he had conceived it. As for me, I've put in my best and, in the process, understood the value of hard work,” says Ajith.

Now that Mankatha is wrapped up, Ajith has moved on to his next. With Billa 2 happening as a prequel, what can one expect from Ajith? “The very fact that we are making a prequel is unusual. Billa is a brand by now, more like a franchise. A lot of people would like to know where Billa came from. What led him to become Billa? This is a bold attempt and I'm happy that the entire production is in the secure hands of Suresh and captained by an accomplished director Chakri Toleti.”

After change of reign many people from the industry have visited Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to congratulate her personally on being elected the head of the State for the third time. But among the list one big name goes missing, Thala Ajith. The actor is very close to the AIADMK supremo but still didn’t meet the CM to wish her.
Ajith on clarifying why he didn’t meet the CM says “She is very busy with her assignments and commitments and I don’t want to disturb her work. Even if I visited her some or the other would claim that I have called on her for my personal reason or for a smooth release of my upcoming film Mankatha. Now the same people inquiry why I did not meet her”.
The actor also adds “Amma knows the truth; I am least bothered about these unnecessary issues brought forward by certain people just because they are not going to produce any of my films”.

Thala Ajith's Exclusive Interview to Mirror
Ajith’s Mankatha is the most-hyped film in Kollywood in the recent times. Touted as Ajith’s 50th film, the Venkat Prabhu flick has been in the news for some time for distribution-related woes. Though the makers are determined to release the film on August 31, it is not yet clear if they could do it so. But nothing seems to have rattled Ajith, who recently shocked the industry by disbanding his fan clubs across Tamil Nadu. In an chat with Mirror, Thalai, as he is fondly called, opens up.

Twenty years is quite a long time in the film industry, considering the fact that the new-generation stars don’t even stay for five years.

Of course, it has been quite an eventful journey so far. Be it cinema, car racing or bikes, I have in fact indulged myself in many things one after the other. There have been hits and misses, but the journey has taught me to take it all in the stride. I would not want to earmark this span of 20 years as a landmark because a lot more distance is there to covered. Life goes on and each turn is a kind of twist in the journey.

Aren’t you excited ahead of Mankatha, your 50th outing?

I am really excited. It’s like a rank newcomer getting ready to make his debut. Regardless of its outcome at the box office, each time I do a new project, I approach it with the same level of passion with which I did my first film.

It is generally said that you get involved a bit too much in most of your projects.

It is a question of pitching in to ensure that things go as per the plans of production. Sometimes it happens that what the director had in the mind doesn’t exactly get translated on the screen, owing to multiple reasons. Those were occasions I tried extending a helping hand. Don’t call it as interference. After all, my focus is on acting and all other things are only incidental. In the case of Mankatha, everything was in perfect order — production and direction in particular — and hence I had no opportunity to walk that extra mile.
The Mankatha theme is evidently based on a game of cards wherein numbers are primarily important. Will you agree that the number game is applicable to the volume of films an actor gets associated with?

Just merely doing more number of films in a specified period of time doesn’t really reflect an actor’s success ratio or his staying power. The taste of the audience changes with times. It is a question of how effectively one adapts himself to the demands of the time.

Many of your recent releases did not exactly set the screen on fire. Resultantly, there has been a sort of a long gap…

I am the type who is a bit choosy about the projects that I do. Even after giving the go-ahead, there have been instances where respective projects got shelved or somebody else taking charge. I should have done a film with Gautham Menon and Bala and of course Billa-2 with Vishnuvardhan as director. But those projects were not to be and I have moved on, so have they. Then, you mentioned about the gap. Well, till the moment I decided to do Venkat Prabhu’s film, I found nothing exciting to take up. Hence I shifted my focus to personal things.

Elaborate please.

I could afford quality time for my family as my little daughter has just joined the kindergarten. My wife was too happy to have me at home, especially at a leisurely pace. Aero-modelling has always been favorite pastime and I could afford to indulge myself in that passion as well.
Do you believe in stardom?

An actor is an actor even his fans and the others in the industry make a star out of him. As far as I am concerned, stardom has no effect on me.

The trend in the film industry is that heroes, irrespective of their age, prefer to play down their ages. What about you?

I think you are referring to my looks in Mankatha. When Venkat came to meet me for the script-narration session, I was sporting the exact look in the film. Venkat was probably ‘impressed’ with that. That’s perhaps why he asked me to retain the same looks. He told me later that the film’s costume designer too had concurred with him and hence it was to be. Sporting that salt’n’pepper look was in fact, quite amusing for me!

In Kollywood, is it tough to survive without a godfather. Do you agree?

Hey, it is not so! Or is it? I haven’t had any godfathers in the industry! And I have been around in this industry for two decades. But I have always had the support of my family and of course the audience, but for whose support I would not have been what I am now!
Do you believe in taking life as it comes?

Well, I don’t complain but I insist on getting prepared. You will have to certainly equip yourself well before taking the plunge. After that, you have to simply go ahead, come what may. I believe in myself and I do have the confidence. You try and give your possible best and await the outcome; you can strive to create one yourself but you cannot be assured of it! Take it as it comes as you know for sure that you have done your best!

Billa 2. A prequel is something unheard of in our Tamil film industry?

That’s why we are doing ’Billa 2. Remember, the ‘Star Wars’ series of films? After three parts were made, the makers made ‘Star Wars-Episode 1’ which was a prequel. I think by now, ‘Billa’ has become a franchise brand! Indeed it is a bold attempt and we intend making it as different as possible.

News has now surfaced that veteran director Mani Ratnam was in Hyderabad to hold discussions with Ajith who is shooting there for Billa 2. Sources say that Mani was seen discussing something seriously with Ajith and this discussion lasted for about two hours.

This has created some anticipation in Kollywood that Ajith may be Mani’s next hero. However, the news still remains unconfirmed with neither the star nor the director making any statements.
