3. Quit smoking
4. Control weight
5. Control blood pressure and sugar
Qn: Is eating non-veg food (fish) good for the heart?
Ans: No
Qn: It's still a grave shock to hear that some apparently healthy person gets a cardiac arrest. How do we understand it in perspective?
Ans: This is called silent attack; that is why we recommend everyone past the age of 30 to undergo routine health checkups.
Qn: Are heart diseases hereditary?
Ans: Yes
Qn: What are the ways in which the heart is stressed? What practices do you suggest to de-stress?
Ans: Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection in everything in life.
Qn: Is walking better than jogging or is more intensive exercise required to keep a healthy heart?
Ans: Walking is better than jogging since jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints .
Qn: You have done so much for the poor and needy. What has inspired you to do so?
Ans: Mother Theresa, who was my patient.
Qn: Can people with low blood pressure suffer heart diseases?
Ans: Extremely rare
Qn: Does cholesterol accumulates right from an early age (I'm currently only 22) or do you have to worry about it only after you are above 30 years of age?
Ans: Cholesterol accumulates from childhood.
Qn: How do irregular eating habits affect the heart?
Ans: You tend to eat junk food when the habits are irregular and your body's enzyme release for digestion gets confused.
Qn: How can I control cholesterol content without using medicines?
Ans: Control diet, walk and eat walnut.
Qn: Can yoga prevent heart ailments?
Ans: Yoga helps.
Qn: Which is the best and worst food for the heart?
Ans: Fruits and vegetables are the best and the worst is oil..
Qn: Which oil is better - groundnut, sunflower, olive?
Ans: All oils are bad .
Qn: What is the routine checkup one should go through? Is there any specific test?
Ans: Routine blood test to ensure sugar, cholesterol is ok. Check BP, Treadmill test after an echo.
Qn: What are the first aid steps to be taken on a heart attack?
Ans: Help the person into a sleeping position , place an aspirin tablet under the tongue with a sorbitrate tablet if available, and rush him to a coronary care unit since the maximum casualty takes place within the first hour.
Qn: How do you differentiate between pain caused by a heart attack and that caused due to gastric trouble?
Ans: Extremely difficult without ECG.
Qn: What is the main cause of a steep increase in heart problems amongst youngsters? I see people of about 30-40 yrs of age having heart attacks and serious heart problems.
Ans: Increased awareness has increased incidents. Also, sedentary lifestyles, smoking, junk food, lack of exercise in a country where people are genetically three times more vulnerable for heart attacks than Europeans and Americans.
Qn: Is it possible for a person to have BP outside the normal range of 120/80 and yet be perfectly healthy?
Ans: Yes.
Qn: Marriages within close relatives can lead to heart problems for the child. Is it true?
Ans : Yes, co-sanguinity leads to congenital abnormalities and you may not have a software engineer as a child
Qn: Many of us have an irregular daily routine and many a times we have to stay late nights in office. Does this affect our heart ? What precautions would you recommend?
Ans : When you are young, nature protects you against all these irregularities. Ho wever, as you grow older, respect the biological clock.
Qn: Will taking anti-hypertensive drugs cause some other complications (short/long term)?
Ans : Yes, most drugs have some side effects. Ho wever, modern anti-hypertensive drugs are extremely safe.
Qn: Will consuming more coffee/tea lead to heart attacks?

Ans : Yes. Lie down comfortably and put an aspirin tablet of any description under the tongue and ask someone to take you to the nearest coronary care unit without any delay and do not wait for the ambulance since most of the time, the ambulance does not turn up.
Qn: Do, in any way, low white blood cells and low hemoglobin count lead to heart problems?
Ans : No. But it is ideal to have normal hemoglobin level to increase your exercise capacity.
Qn: Sometimes, due to the hectic schedule we are not able to exercise. So, does walking while doing daily chores at home or climbing the stairs in the house, work as a substitute for exercise?
Ans : Certainly. Avoid sitting continuously for more than half an hour and even the act of getting out of the chair and going to another chair and sitting helps a lot..

Qn: Which oil is better - groundnut, sunflower, olive?
Ans: All oils are bad .
I was shocked to see this. I remember reading several articles which Claim Olive Oil to be the best "oil" out of the others, when it came to Heart Disease.
CAN OLIVE OIL HELP PREVENT HEART ATTACKS?
A recent study looked at the basic disease process behind heart attacks: the development of blood clots that block the coronary arteries. Several studies in Mediterranean countries have shown that the incidence of heart disease is lower than would be expected by blood cholesterol levels. Many feel that this discrepancy can be explained by the high amount of olive oil in the diet in this region. But what is it in olive oil that lowers heart attack risk? Researchers Larsen LF, Jespersen J, and Marckmann P at the Centre for Advanced Food Studies, The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Frederiksberg, Denmark decided to see if it was due to olive oil affecting the blood's basic ability to form clots. Less effective clotting would mean fewer heart attacks. The researchers compared the effects of virgin olive oil with those of rapeseed and sunflower oils on blood coagulation factor VII, which is a key factor in blood clot formation. In this study eighteen healthy young men consumed diets enriched with olive oil, sunflower oil, or rapeseed oil for a period of 3 weeks. Levels of Factor VII were significantly lower in those who ate olive oil compared to sunflower or rapeseed (canola) oil. The study's conclusion was that olive oil may lower the procoagulant tendency of fatty meals which could explain the low incidence of heart attacks in Mediterranean countries.

Study after study has suggested (nothing can be proved for certainty in the dietary stuff, unfortunately, unless the effect is sudden and immediate as in the case of alcohal / poison)that fish oil contains omega 3 that's good for the heart and it's being marketed in a massive way.
Similarly, olive oil is also highly recommended to have positive effects (due to "good cholestral").
That this doctor dismisses them both has to be taken with a pinch of salt, IMO.
I can understand the fish thingy (possibly the doc is a veggie) but why olive oil?
Interestingly, even the peanut oil (i.e. the ground nut oil) as well as canola / corn oil etc that are sold in places like sams club does not seem to have cholestral, if one goes by the numbers pasted on the can.
Of all the oils, so far only palm & coconut oil are tainted by the US media as bad for heart. They often encourage people to use a variety of oils and not depend on just one kind.
Obviously, "அளவுக்கு மீறினால் அமிர்தமும் நஞ்சு" which will apply to oil as well. OTOH, total lack of oil in cooking, while not practical could also mean missing some easily available essential nutrients for the body.
What if one's heart is healthy (i.e. at a point of time, obviously there's no body part that can be perfectly healthy forever) but another organ is weak? That person is still going to suffer in life, isn't it?
Balance is the key in diet. So are lifestyle changes (activities / exercise / stress management etc).
That is, from our end. There are 100 other external agents to spoil our health anyways :-) So, perfect health is a myth under current conditions.

There's another funny answer from this doc "nature protects women till 45" :-) What's that magic thingy about 45? There's nothing like that.
He was talking to an intelligent group of audience and could have told the proper reason - that women are protected till such time they have the menstrural cycle, instead of coming with an arbitrary age :-)
Such "adhoc" attitude is seen is many answers.
Personally, I've stopped trusting "famous" doctors for advice on general health care because of the greed / commercialism that plagues the HC industry. (They are necessary in case of sickness and medical emergencies but not on a day to day advice).
Older generation is a lot more trustworthy (as long as "factual science" - not some studies - does not obviously contradict them). :-)

IMO, ghee (clarified butter) is a lot more dangerous food than any of the vegetable oils as for as heart health is concerned as animal fat typically affects the blood system worse than those that come out of plant sources.
I know of a huge list of perfect vegetarians who had severe heart issues (despite never touching meat / poultry / fish / eggs) but they were huge ghee consumers.
Animal fat is fed in huge, concentrated quantities in ghee which takes away all the vegetarian advantages.

Usha Chechi,
I was only commenting on the "heart disease" connection, with respect to the answers of a cardiac specialist. The question was why women don't get heart attack until they are older, unlike men (who nowadays get even in 30's, sadly).
The doctor could have answered the estrogen connection instead of putting an arbitrary 45 number.
Ofcourse, women get a ton of other problems.

during stress the adrenal glands kick in to produce cortisol
which is extremely acidic and corrosive to the bones muscles thymus gland and the hypothalamus -
(which is the decision making part of the brain )
and when stress accompanied by elevated cortisol
it can slow bone building and dramatically increase bone break down functions
when stressed out , our body stays on red alert !
sacrificing energy and nutrients targeted for bone building and
redirecting them to a survival mode during acute stress periods
and when it comes to moderate exercise
anything that gets you moving can be good for bone health

Got the following information from an e-mail forwarded by an old-associate.
Since most part sounds reasonable, posting it here...please have a look at this info related to CANCER.
================================================== ================
AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY ('TRY', BEING THE KEY WORD) TO ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY .
Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins :
1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer
cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have
multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients
that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after
treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the
cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable
size.
2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a
person's lifetime.
3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer
cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and
forming tumors.
4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has
nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic,
but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors.
5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing
diet to eat more adequately and healthy, 4-5 times/day
and by including supplements will strengthen the immune
system.
6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing
cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells
in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can
cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.
7.. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars
and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.
8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often
reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of
chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor
destruction.
9. When the body has too much toxic burden from
chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either
compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb
to various kinds of infections and complications.
10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to
mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy.
Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other
sites.
11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer
cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

Continuation...
===============================================
a. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are
made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural
substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses , but only in
very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make
it white in color Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea
salt.
B. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the
gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting
off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer
cells are being starved.
c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based
diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little other
meat, like chicken. Meat also contains livestock
antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all
harmful, especially to people with cancer.
d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole
grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into
an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked
food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live
enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to
cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance
growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building
healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most
vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw
vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at
temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C)..
e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high
caffeine Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer
fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or
filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap
water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.
12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of
digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the
intestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic
buildup.
13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By
refraining from or eating less meat it frees more
enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and
allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.
14. Some supplements build up the immune system
(IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals,
EFAs etc.) to enable the bodies own killer cells to destroy
cancer cells.. Other supplements like vitamin E are known
to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's
normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or
unneeded cells.
15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit.
A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior
be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put
the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to
have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy
life.
16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated
environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to
get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen
therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer
cells.
1. No plastic containers in micro.
2. No water bottles in freezer.

Final part
====================================
Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.
Please share this with your whole email list.........................
Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.
This is an article that should be sent to anyone important in your life.

Reg. baldness :
I know two cases of my relatives who tried Rogaine & it worked w.r.t hair growth / control of hair-loss.
But, caused very bad side-effects! (One of them reportedly suffered significant loss of "maRRa" interest & it led to family problems).
Rogaine - Strongly recommended NOT to use.

OTOH, at one point of time, when another (close) relative suffered severe hair loss (would have become bald shortly), the following treatment was suggested by some and IT WORKED! I'm an eye-witness to this and so strongly recommend it.
Warm a small bowl of olive oil, add a table spoon of honey & mix a tea spoon of pattaippodi with it (cinnamon powder, costs < $5 for half pound at Sams club) to make a paste.
Apply this paste to the scalp / hair-roots / hair and let it do the magic for 15 minutes, before bathing (smells nasty when the person with this applied is around, I'm a nose-witness to this, so warn others at home).
There's a catch - you got to continue doing this week after week:-)
But then, if you want your hair, keep doing...when you're tired, go for wig:-)

Param,
The generic drug name is minoxidil (Rogaine is a popular brand in U.S. and sold in all pharmacy stores), look at this link :
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000883/
"That" wasn't claimed in the drug-side-effects but the fellow was pretty normal prior to this treatment  So, interpretation :-)
It does affect harmones and in the case of many women, resulted in growth of facial hair , in addition to thalai hair.
So, there is a possible connection to the gender-related interests...(interestingly, the stores sell male & female versions of this drug :lol2:)

I know, in UK they sell a product called Regaine, which has a certain dosage of minoxidil, and yes it does have some side effects. Apparently it promotes Estrogens (Female hormones) in men, while in women it promotes (testosterones), :shaking: " this will explain the reason behind facial hairs for females

Could be related to environmental temp...or due to the prior-night's liquid diet :lol2:
BTW, stroke is caused by "momentary-blocking-of-blood-supply" to portions of brain, as per my siRRaRivu. If the supply to RHS of brain is affected, LHS of body gets paralysed and vice-versa.
It's possible the nerve network controlling your fingers has some issue or the control point in the brain where the nerves end...Or, it could be even lack-of-sufficient-blood-supply to the finger tips themselves.
In any case, checking BP / controlling it always helps :-)

•Sudden confusion
•Trouble speaking or understanding speech
•Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, hand, or leg (especially on one side of the body)
•Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes (such as double vision, blurred vision, or blindness)

oru vishyaththa paththi pEsina, naalu pEru, naalu vidhaama sollanum. Here's my take:
Me got the numbness-in-left-hand problem (especially fingers) for about six months now (on and off). I did a bit of reading on the net and kinda concluded that it could be due to excessive strain on the nerves entering the palm, caused mainly due to repetitive stress from daily actions like typing, lifting heavy objects at work (say a stout female colleague), etc. Muththi pOchuna, it could lead to what is known as Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpel_tunnel_syndrome)(CTS).
At one point, the pain had aggravated and reached all the way up to my shoulder - quite a terrible feeling, I must say. I then got myself a simple wrist band (think power lifting) and started using it whenever the pain shot up (only for 5 mins or so each time). It basically helps in reducing the wrist from bending frequently (which causes the nerves to constrict) thereby reducing the pain and numbing significantly.

Actually this is "promoted" by the healthcare industry  That way, is not a myth among a group of people, like Thamizhs / TN-ers etc. I've observed heavy marketing by medical community for the "periodic screening / check-up / find-if-early / master-health-check-up" etc.
Since cancer & heart attack are the two most dreaded diseases in the last few decades (people could get them due to a variety of reasons but the increase in occurence is a reality nevertheless), where some "advance notification" helps to take care of some conditions and ensure a few more years of life, people too go for it.

Like I had already mentioned, there are many reasons why people get diabetes / heart problems / cancer, that are on the rise among people of all nationalities. (FYI, heart attacks had been terrible with Indians in India in the last few decades, it's no longer a "rich country disease"...obesity is just one of the factors. I know of a few who were lean but got killed by heart attack in 30's, the possible reason being smoking / stress).
For cancer, how do you know if you're at risk or not  My cousin got killed by cancer (in the neck area) when he was only a teen. None in family ever smoked or drunk or anything like that. And they ate mutton probably just once a week.
The fact is most food materials that come to stores are produced by all kinds of chemical / genetic / technological manipulations - over which most people on the planet have no control!
This is in addition to the already imperfect bodies people inherit from their parents ; being surrounded by polluted environment ; stressed by things over which one has zero say (think of the relatives of those who got burnt in the thamizhnAdu express, what control they had over the fire?).
So, bottom line, at the slightest indication (sometimes even without symptoms, simply periodically) - carry out some tests :-)

The main causes of liver damage are~
1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late are main causes.
2. Not urinating in the morning.
3. Too much eating.
4. Skipping breakfast.
5. Consuming too much medication.
6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial sweetener.
7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit.
8. Consuming raw (overly done) foods also add to the burden of liver.
Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.
We should prevent this without necessarily spending more. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good eating habits and time condition are very important for our bodies to absorb and get rid of unnecessary chemicals according to 'schedule.

Early to bed and early to rise makes you healthy, wealthy as well as wise. And that is not merely an age-old saying. It works in daily life too. Read on to know how.
1. Time to Exercise
Waking up early gives you the time to exercise. You can easily go for a jog, do a few laps in the pool, practice yoga or hit the gym with plenty of time at hand.
2. Time to Meditate
There is nothing like beginning the day with a dose of meditation. It will help calm your mind and sharpen your reflexes to keep you going through your busy schedule of work.
3. Experience the Charm of Early Morning
Only an early morning person knows the charm and serenity that those hours offer. The silence, the birds chirping, the absence of cars honking, and the sunrise are all advantages only early rising can offer.
4. Increase Productivity and Efficiency
A study conducted at the Texas University in 2008 revealed that early risers are more prone to be productive and efficient at work. In fact, students who wake up early are known to get higher grades than those who wake up late.
5. Eating Breakfast
Breakfast is known to be the most important meal of the day. Often, you may land up skipping it if you are running late for work. An early start to the day ensures that this significant meal is never given the slip.
6. Less Stress
Giving you ample time to get ready on time, waking up early ensures that you suffer less stress. Beat the traffic and drive to work at ease.
7. Set Routine
Once you get into the habit of rising early, you are able to set a routine and that obviously leads to better productivity not only at work, but also on the home front and as an individual.
8. Brighter Mood
Early risers are known to be happier and more optimistic than night owls. The latter are known to suffer depression, insomnia and pessimism. The bright start with exercise and optimism is bound to keep you feeling energised and optimistic all day.
9. Better Health
Proper routine and exercise are known factors in ensuring better health in the long run. Waking up early ensures you set aside time to work out. Late risers lack the advantage of time for this.
10. Better Finances
Improved health, enhanced productivity and ameliorated energy can only result in one thing a higher rate of success. And when this happens in your career, can financial triumph be far behind? So, rise early to kickstart a really great way of doing well in the professional sphere as well.
The benefits of waking up early are myriad. It doesn't take much to change your lifestyle to avail these benefits. After all, personal and professional well-being, and ultimate success are what everyone seeks. So, why not adopt a healthier way of living and reap those benefits?

Yes, Alcohol dehydrates you so much to give you the bloated look, esp a beer belly and a chubby face! Spirits are the worst culprits! It also gives you puffy eyes!
Drinking 500 ml of milk prior to drinking alcohol reduces the effect of Alcohol, as the "lactose" contains in the milk will absorb majority of the Alcohol !
Alcohol main damage to body is liver, kidney, heart and infertility (amongst men)

This wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouth_ulcer#Causes) seems to cover the causes and treatments pretty decently.
For long, I was told that B12 deficiency was the main cause (which is true) but there seems to be many other reasons...

I got mouth ulcers from my mother's genes and for the past 20 years or so, I get them once in every 2 months and they last for 10 days. I have seen more than 15 doctors, both in India and in the states and the unanimous opinion of *well-informed* doctors is - there is no single root cause and there is no treatment. *Possible* causes, just listing the most important ones which is not already mentioned in this thread:
1. Stress (YES!!)
2. Sleeplessness
3. Spicy food.
4. Not smoking, but smoking cessation.
Remedies:
1. Multivitamin tablets (not just B12) like Centrum (you have to take it 1 a day, no matter what. I am taking it)
2. The mexican coconut water cans you get in grocery stores(Works for me)
3. Eat light in the night, sleep well for a couple of days.

7 Healing Foods to fight common cold.
1. Chicken soup
why: It’s been called nature’s penicillin and is at the top of the list for its curative powers. Hot chicken soup helps clear clogged airways,
2. Hot and spicy food
Chilies or spicy sauces to help ease congestion. Cook Indian or other ethnic foods that contain these ingredients, or simply add a spicy sauce to foods for extra zip
3. Garlic
This fragrant bulb contains a flavoring agent called alliin which acts as a decongestant. Garlic is also believed to act as an antioxidant and destroy free-radicals, the active oxygen molecules that damage cells
4. Fluids
To keep you liquefied.
5. Citrus fruits
Reach for citrus fruits to increase your vitamin C intake. Drink orange juice for breakfast, snack on half a grapefruit, or add tangerine slices to a lunchtime salad. Getting an increased amount of vitamin C is especially important if you smoke, as smoking increases both your risk of catching a cold and your body's need for this protective vitamin.
6. Ginger
Many people find fresh ginger root helps treat the coughing and fever that often accompany colds and flu. Try making a ginger tea
7. Vitamin C sources
Citrus fruits aren't the only foods high in vitamin C. Potatoes, green peppers, strawberries and pineapple can help as your daily cold-fighting food arsenal.

●► Reasons to Drink Lemon Water Daily :-
An unsweetened glass of warm lemon or lime water first thing in the morning is surprisingly helpful in several ways. This Yogic or Ayurvedic ritual is primarily for stimulating digestion and eliminating ama, the Ayurvedic term for toxic slime that builds up in the gastro intestinal tract and sometimes coats your tongue. But that's not all. This ritual has many more health benefits for us in our world today.
● Reasons Why :-
1. Warm lemon or lime water helps purify and stimulate the liver. Lemon/lime water liquifies bile while inhibiting excess bile flow.
2. Warm lemon/lime water aids digestion. It's atomic composition is similar to saliva and the hydrochloric acid of digestive juices.
3. The liver produces more enzymes in response to lemon/lime water than any other food, according to A.F. Beddoe, author of Biological Ionization as Applied to Human Nutrition.
4. Lemon/lime water helps bowels eliminate naturally and easily.
5. Lemons and limes are high in potassium. Potassium is an important mineral that works with sodium for smooth electrical transmission in the brain and nervous system. Depression, anxiety, fogginess, and forgetfulness can often be traced to low potassium blood levels. That same nervous system needs potassium to assure steady signals to the heart, so heart health is improved from drinking lemon/lime water.
6. Calcium and magnesium are plentiful and in good ratio to each other in lemon/lime water. Rickets, a disease faded out years ago but now making a comeback, is prevented by this daily ritual.
7. Lemon/lime water can help lower blood pressure.
8. Lemon/lime water has an alkalizing effect as it is buffered in the body. Even if you drink it at room temperature just before any meal, it will help your body maintain a higher pH. The higher or more alkaline your pH, the more resistant you are to minor and major disease.
9. Drinking lemon/lime water helps dilute uric acid, which creates arthritic pain or gout when it accumulates.
10. Lemon/lime water educes phlegm in the body.
● Instructions :-
1. Warm purified fluoride free water or spring water should be used. At least a half of a lemon or lime should be thoroughly squeezed into a half full glass of warm water with no sweetener added. Its better to use a lemon/lime squeezer to get maximum juice with minimum seeds.
2. This should be done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and dont start eating breakfast right away. Some recommend an hour before eating for maximum results, but waiting at least a half hour is usually enough.
3. One technique to assure proper timing is to heat up water and put it into a thermos before going to bed. Upon rising, mix that hot water with room temperature purified lemon or lime water. Drink it down quickly, then go about your other morning routines before eating breakfast.
4. The warm lemon/lime water daily habit is as cheap and easy as it gets for helping you to improve and maintain your overall health. Bottoms up!

Neem is a magical tree and especially the neem leaves that are used for its medicinal properties.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF: RADISH.... (Mullengi)
Radish, the well known part of your salad, is a root crop, pungent or sweet in taste with a lot of juice. Radishes can be white, red, purple or black, long cylindrical or round in shape. They are eate...n raw, cooked or pickled. The oil obtained from the seeds of radish is also used. The other parts of radish which are consumed are the leaves, the flowers, the pods and the seeds. The scientific name of radish is Raphanus Sativus which belongs to the Brassicaceae family. Radish is also known as Daiken in some parts of the world.
The benefits of radish against certain ailments and on certain body parts are listed below:
Jaundice: Radish is very good for the liver and the stomach and it is a very good detoxifier too, that is, it purifies blood. It is miraculously useful in jaundice as it helps removing bilirubin and also checks its production. It also checks destruction of red blood cells during jaundice by increasing supply of fresh oxygen in the blood. The black radish is more preferred in jaundice. The leaves of radish are also very useful in treatment of jaundice.
Piles: Radish is very rich in roughage, i.e. indigestible carbohydrates. This facilitates digestion, retains water, cures constipation (one of the main causes for piles) and thus gives relief in piles. Being a very good detoxifier, it helps heal up piles fast. Its juice also soothes the digestive and excretory system and this also relieves piles.
Urinary Disorders: Radishes are diurectic in nature, i.e. increase production of urine. Juice of radish also cures inflammation and burning feeling during urinating. It also cleans the kidneys and inhibits infections in kidneys and urinary system. Thus it helps a great deal in curing urinary disorders.
Weight Loss: Radishes are very filling, i.e. fills your stomach and satisfies your hunger easily without giving you many calories, as they are low in digestible carbohydrates, high in roughage and contain a lot of water. It is a very good dietary option for those determined to lose weight.
Cancer: Being a very good detoxifier and rich in vitamin-C, folic and anthocyanins, radish helps cure many types of cancer, particularly those of colon, kidney, intestines, stomach and oral cancer.
Leucoderma: The detoxifying and anti carcinogenic properties of radish make it useful in treatment of Leucoderma. The radish seeds are used in this case. They should be powdered and soaked in vinegar or ginger juice or cows urine and then applied on the white patches. Eating radish also aids treatment of Leucoderma.
Skin Disorders: Vitamin-C, phosphorus, zinc and some members of vitamin-B complex, which are present in radish, are good for skin. The water in it helps maintaining moisture of the skin. Smashed raw radish is a very good cleanser and serves as a very efficient face pack. Due to its disinfectant properties, radish also helps cure skin disorders, such as drying up, rashes, cracks etc. and also refreshes it.
Kidney Disorders: Being diurectic, cleanser and disinfectant, it helps cure many kidney disorders. Its diurectic properties help wash away the toxins accumulated in the kidneys. Cleansing properties clean kidneys up and lessens accumulation of toxins in the blood, thereby decreasing their concentration in the kidneys. Its disinfectant properties protect the kidneys from any infections too. Thus it is good for overall health of the kidneys.
Insect Bites: It has anti pruritic properties and can be used as an effective treatment for insect bites, stings of bees, hornets, wasps etc. Its juice also reduces pain and swelling and soothes the affected area.
Fever: It brings down the body temperature and relieves inflammation due to fever. Drink radish juice mixed with black salt. Being a good disinfectant, it also fights infections which cause fever, thereby helping cure it.
Respiratory Disorders, Bronchitis and Asthma: Radish is an anti congestive, i.e. it relieves congestion of respiratory system including nose, throat, wind-pipe and lungs, due to cold, infection, allergies and other causes. It is a good disinfectant and also rich in vitamins, which protect respiratory system from infections.
Liver&Gallbladder: Radish is especially beneficial for liver and gallbladder functions. It regulates production and flow of bile and bilirubin, acids, enzymes and removes excess bilirubin from the blood, being a good detoxifier. It also contains enzymes like myrosinase, diastase, amylase and esterase. It protects liver and gallbladder from infections and ulcers and soothes them.
Other Benefits: Apart from above benefits, radish is a good appetizer, mouth and breathe freshener, laxative, regulates metabolism, improves blood circulation, is a good treatment for headache, acidity, constipation, nausea, obesity, sore throat, whooping cough, gastric problems, gallbladder stones, dyspepsia etc.

H-Varicose Veins
H-Varicose Veins from Amoils.com Official Site.
www.amoils.com
Health Remedies (AWHW)
Varicose veins are painful, unsightly, and sometimes require surgical intervention. They are most common in women and frequently brought on by pregnancy, however genetics and lifestyle factors are also relevant.
Veins pump blood back to the heart, which means that leg veins are tasked with pumping blood upward, against gravity. Veins have natural leaflet valves to keep the blood moving in
the right direction; in varicose veins, however, problems with the leaflets allow some of the blood to flow backwards, resulting in discomfort.
Let’s take a look at some of the lifestyle changes you can make to prevent varicose veins:
Sit and stand with care. To promote better circulation, maintain good posture and avoid crossing your legs when seated. Your circulation suffers when you sit or stand for a long time, so take frequent breaks to stretch your legs.
Invest in compression hose. Compression hose and socks are available both over-the-counter and by a doctor’s prescription. They apply pressure to the lower legs to help your veins pump blood upward toward the heart.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Easier said than done, we know, but keeping your weight down and activity level up have been shown to decrease your risk of developing varicose veins. Doctors recommend low-impact exercises like swimming, cycling, and walking.

Health Benefits of Green Tea :--
1. Green tea has high levels of antioxidants. It contains polyphenols, tannins, phenols and flavanoid compounds, the amino acid theanine and catechins of which epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG seems to be the most beneficial. This EGCG is a powerful antioxidant that is said to be twice as effective as resveratol present in red wine which effectively protects your body cells and helps you to get rid of malignant or cancer cells without harming the rest of the healthy tissues in the body.
2. The presence of EGCG in green tea helps to prevent abnormal formation of blood clots in wounds (known as thrombosis) that can lead to heart attack and stroke.
3. Green tea reduces the bad cholesterol and increases the good cholesterol count in your body. It acts as a glucose regulator and helps to slow the rise in blood sugar after meals.
4. Green tea increases your metabolism and fat oxidation process which is essential for weight loss. Drink 3-5 cups of green tea per day on a regular basis and it will help you to reduce your weight by 70 calories per day.
5. Green tea has the ability to destroy bacteria and hence prevents tooth decay.
6. It cleanses out toxins from your body and improves your health.
7. Green tea relieves you of skin problems such as wrinkles and blemishes. It is a good remedy for skin related diseases such as acne, psoriasis and rosacea, etc.
8. Green tea boost memory power and helps to prevent diseases such as Alzheimer's.
9. It lowers the risk of diseases such as arthritis.
10. It can help you to relax from stress and anxiety.
11. Drinking green tea will help you get rid of cold and flu faster since it contains vitamin C.

The Sour Sop or the fruit from the graviola tree is a miraculous natural cancer cell killer 10,000 times stronger than Chemo.
Why are we not aware of this? Its because some big corporation want to make back their money spent on years of research by trying to make a synthetic version of it for sale.
So, since you know it now you can help a friend in need by letting him know or just drink some sour sop juice yourself as prevention from time to time. The taste is not bad after all. It’s completely natural and definitely has no side effects. If you have the space, plant one in your garden.
The other parts of the tree are also useful.
The next time you have a fruit juice, ask for a sour sop.
How many people died in vain while this billion-dollar drug maker concealed the secret of the miraculous Graviola tree?
This tree is low and is called graviola ! in Brazi l, guanabana in Spanish and has the uninspiring name “soursop” in English. The fruit is very large and the subacid sweet white pulp is eaten out of hand or, more commonly, used to make fruit drinks, sherbets and such.
The principal interest in this plant is because of its strong anti-cancer effects. Although it is effective for a number of medical conditions, it is its anti tumor effect that is of most interest. This plant is a proven cancer remedy for cancers of all types.
Besides being a cancer remedy, graviola is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent for both bacterial and fungal infections, is effective against internal parasites and worms, lowers high blood pressure and is used for depression, stress and nervous disorders.
If there ever was a single example that makes it dramatically clear why the existence of Health Sciences Institute is so vital to Americans like you, it’s the incredible story behind the Graviola tree..
The truth is stunningly simple: Deep within the Amazon Rainforest grows a tree that could literally revolutionize what you, your doctor, and the rest of the world thinks about cancer treatment and chances of survival. The future has never looked more promising.
Research shows that with extracts from this miraculous tree it now may be possible to:
* Attack cancer safely and effectively with an all-natural therapy that does not cause extreme nausea, weight loss and hair loss
* Protect your immune system and avoid deadly infections
* Feel stronger and healthier throughout the course of the treatment
* Boost your energy and improve your outlook on life
The source of this information is just as stunning: It comes from one of America ‘s largest drug manufacturers, th! e fruit of over 20 laboratory tests conducted since the 1970's! What those tests revealed was nothing short of mind numbing… Extracts from the tree were shown to:
* Effectively target and kill malignant cells in 12 types of cancer, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer..
* The tree compounds proved to be up to 10,000 times stronger in slowing the growth of cancer cells than Adriamycin, a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug!
* What’s more, unlike chemotherapy, the compound extracted from the Graviola tree selectivelyhunts
down and kills only cancer cells.. It does not harm healthy cells!
The amazing anti-cancer properties of the Graviola tree have been extensively researched–so why haven’t you heard anything about it? If Graviola extract is
One of America ‘s biggest billion-dollar drug makers began a search for a cancer cure and their research centered on Graviola, a legendary healing tree from the Amazon Rainforest.
Various parts of the Graviola tree–including the bark, leaves, roots, fruit and fruit-seeds–have been used for centuries by medicine men and native Indi! ans in S outh America to treat heart disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis. Going on very little documented scientific evidence, the company poured money and resources into testing the tree’s anti-cancerous properties–and were shocked by the results. Graviola proved itself to be a cancer-killing dynamo.
But that’s where the Graviola story nearly ended.
The company had one huge problem with the Graviola tree–it’s completely natural, and so, under federal law, not patentable. There’s no way to make serious profits from it.
It turns out the drug company invested nearly seven years trying to synthesize two of the Graviola tree’s most powerful anti-cancer ingredients. If they could isolate and produce man-made clones of what makes the Graviola so potent, they’d be able to patent it and make their money back. Alas, they hit a brick wall. The original simply could not be replicated. There was no way the company could protect its profits–or even make back the millions it poured into research.
As the dream of huge profits evaporated, their testing on Graviola came to a screeching halt. Even worse, the company shelved the entire project and chose not to publish the findings of its research!
Luckily, however, there was one scientist from the Graviola research team whose conscience wouldn’t let him see such atrocity committed. Risking his career, he contacted a company that’s dedicated to harvesting medical plants from the Amazon Rainforest and blew the whistle.
Miracle unleashed
When researchers at the Health Sciences Institute were alerted to the news of Graviola,! they be gan tracking the research done on the cancer-killing tree. Evidence of the astounding effectiveness of Graviola–and its shocking cover-up–came in fast and furious….
….The National Cancer Institute performed the first scientific research in 1976. The results showed that Graviola’s “leaves and stems were found effective in attacking and destroying malignant cells.” Inexplicably, the results were published in an internal report and never released to the public…
….Since 1976, Graviola has proven to be an immensely potent cancer killer in 20 independent laboratory tests, yet no double-blind clinical trials–the typical benchmark mainstream doctors and journals use to judge a treatment’s value–were ever initiated….
….A study published in the Journal of Natural Products, following a recent study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea stated that one chemical in Graviola was found to selectively kill colon cancer cells at “10,000 times the potency of (the commonly used chemotherapy drug) Adriamycin…”
….The most significant part of the Catholic University of South Korea report is that Graviola was shown to selectively target the cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched. Unlike chemotherapy, which indiscriminately targets all actively reproducing cells (such as stomach and hair cells), causing the often devastating side effects of nausea and hair loss in cancer patients.
…A study at Purdue University recently found that leaves from the Graviola tree killed cancer cells among six human cell lines and were especially effective against prostate, pancreatic and lung cancers Seven years of silence broken–it’s finally here!"

The Sour Sop or the fruit from the graviola tree is a miraculous natural cancer cell killer 10,000 times stronger than Chemo.
nanRi sir!
My current team member's mom is suffering from cancer & I shared this with him. He immediately called his brother in India and asked him to arrange regular supply of the Ramar pazham to his mom, even encouraged them to plant the tree in the backyard...(BTW, Seetha pazham is tastier and more popular in TN but some homes have Ramar pazham tree too ; my close friend had that tree in his house in Palakkad and we used to eat during each visit).
Even if the claims are not totally true, it doesn't hurt to eat fruits :-)

The superior fiber found in Ladies Finger helps to stabilize blood sugar by curbing the rate at which sugar is absorbed from the intestinal tract.
Ladies Finger helps lubricate the large intestines due to its bulk laxative qualities. The Ladies Finger fiber absorbs water and ensures bulk in stools. This helps prevent and improve constipation. Unlike harsh wheat bran, which can irritate or injure the intestinal tract, Ladies Finger's mucilage soothes, and Ladies Finger facilitates elimination more comfortably by its slippery characteristic.
Ladies Finger binds excess cholesterol and toxins (in bile acids). These, if not evacuated, will cause numerous health problems. Ladies Finger also assures easy passage out of waste from the body. Ladies Finger is completely non-toxic, non-habit forming, has no adverse side effects, is full of nutrients, and is economically within reach of most unlike the OTC drugs.
Ladies Finger is good for summer heat treatment. Ladies Finger is a supreme vegetable for those feeling weak, exhausted, and suffering from depression.
Ladies Finger fiber is excellent for feeding the good bacteria (probiotics). This contributes to the health of the intestinal tract. These are similar to the ones proliferate by the yoghurt in the small intestine and helps biosynthesis of Vitamin B complex.
Ladies Finger is used for healing ulcers and to keep joints limber. It helps to neutralize acids, being very alkaline, and provides a temporary protective coating for the digestive tract.
In India, Ladies Finger has been used successfully in experimental blood plasma replacements. To retain most of Ladies Finger's nutrients and self-digesting enzymes, it should be cooked as little as possible, e.g. with low heat or lightly steamed. Some eat it raw.

1. Chicken soup
why: It’s been called nature’s penicillin and is at the top of the list for its curative powers. Hot chicken soup helps clear clogged airways

Using BMI to evaluate whether you are overweight /underweight is utterly misleading! It is the Fat content in the body that people should be worried about! This can be done by blood test and machines which reads your fat content from your sweat!
BMI is very misleading, because Muscles and Bones are much heavier than fat, so if your BMI says you are overweight, it does not "always" mean you are fat!
I have discussed these issues long back.

MUST READ!!
Aren't you concerned with your health? (http://2nrc.blogspot.jp/2012/01/arent-you-concerned-with-your-health.html)
Aren't you concerned with your health?
If you are concerned about your weight and/or health as I do, then see below. I am sharing my experience here.
Before your age turns 30 [at least by 40] consider the below:
1. What is the criteria of being healthy?
2. Should I need to 'only' care about calories, weight, BMI? Are there any other factors to consider?
3. How active I am?
4. How I want to be in my 40s and over 50s?
In recent past years, I was concerned about my health for 3months just before my annual Medical Checkup[MC], and will be very strict on my diet, will start walking, running etc. Once MC is done then back to normal life style. I wan't a couch potato, but equally not much concerned about health.
Let me re-wind my life to about 15years back...
I was 86kg in weight and 168cm in height. That was the only data I had about me in this context. Absolutely no idea what was my Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Body Mass Index etc. etc. Who cares? I was active, was able to run, walk, climb stairs as normal as possible. Eat as shameless as possible, eat whenever and whatever I wanted.
1999: This year was my very first medical checkup. Everything except by weight, BMI, rest everything was as normal as possible. Its obvious that my weight = over weight hence BMI was so high. BP? it was 87/54 [low BP]. The physician was stunned at me and asked whether I was ok, as I had to climb 4floors to get into the clinic where the MC was done . He was checking with me whether I felt dizzy or anything strange. As I was perfectly fine I said so too. Now my Total Cholesterol [T-Cho] = 180mg/dl, HDL = 53mg/dl TG = 90mg/dl. Calculated LDL = 109mg/dl [normal]
Years passed gradually the physical activity increased day by day such as walking to/from train station from/to home/office. Walking during sight seeing, climbing stairs several times at office to switch between two floors etc. The weight gradually reduced to 78kg.
Note: I have not done any exercise specifically to reduce weight, the normal day to day activity helped me to reduce 8Kg.
[B]2002: MC my Total Cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were high. T-Cho = 260mg/dl, HDL = 51mg/dl, TG = 90mg/dl, Calculated LDL = 191mg/dl. Wait a min in 3years why this sudden change? After very long investigation found that the consumption of below were increased in recent years.
A. Potato fries from McDonald
B. Pizzas with double cheese topping
Now its time to keep fit as I am going to have my MC soon. What did I do? Walked as much as possible, reduced oil consumption, totally cut consumption of potato fries from McDonald and pizzas. Go to office in cycle [One way: 10Km]. Result: in 5months reduced 9kg and I was 68kg. Wow this was lower than my university days.
2004: Not much in my Cholesterol levels but my weight, waist size, BMI had improved levels. Still I was put in danger level on the Cholesterol.
2005: Now the life style little changed weight increased to 72kg. Other stats were more or less same as previous year. T-Cho = 225mg/dl, HDL = 53mg/dl, TG = 90mg/dl, Calculated LDL = 154mg/dl. Wow better than 2002. Perhaps cut on those high fat items helped?
[B]2006: Except weight, BMI nothing else changed much, although there was slight change in cholesterol measures. Weight was about 76kg. T-Cho = 221mg/dl, HDL = 57mg/dl, TG = 93mg/dl, Calculated LDL = 146mg/dl.
2007: Weight = 77.7kg, T-Cho = 242mg/dl, HDL = 53mg/dl, TG = 192mg/dl, Calculated LDL = 150mg/dl. Increase in weight and T-Cho. Reason: Started drinking alcohol [a social drinker, but when drink will really get drunk as though I have to crawl back home]
2008: Awareness increased did few physical activities that helped in reducing weight to 72kg, but not much difference in Cholesterol levels.
2009: Again weight gained now to 77kg. Cholesterols increased as well. T-Cho = 251mg/dl, HDL = 60mg/dl, TG = 179mg/dl, LDL = 172mg/dl.
2010[3/2011]: Not much change in weight. Observed reduction in Cholesterol. T-Cho = 231mg/dl, HDL = 60mg/dl, TG = 142mg/dl, LDL = 156mg/dl. Reason: you can see in the summary.
2011[1/2012]: Weight reduced 75kg [was 79.8Kg on 29-Sep-2011. Observed increase in Cholesterol. T-Cho = 261mg/dl, HDL = 50mg/dl, TG = 96mg/dl, LDL = 190mg/dl.
Summary of Observations
* When I was over weight my cholesterol was as normal as it has to be [1999]
* Even after my weight reduced, the cholesterol level has increased [2002]
* Even after few adjustments in the diet and activity there has not been much improvement in the cholesterol level
[B]Factors to be considered to stay fit
Activities
* Keep yourselves as active as possible.
* Schedule your activities and keep it as regular as possible. Be it walking, jogging, running or any aerobic exercise try to do it for at least 30 min a day. Key point is to keep it as regular as possible and have to sustain i.e. continue it for ever. Do not count the time you walk to Bus stop/Train station, Office or a Shop etc. unless you walk for 30min (continuously) and cover 3~3.5km at least. Note: This will differ according to age and capacity.
* Try to use stairs instead of lift/escalator if you want to go up/down by 2~3floors.
Food
* Never say 'No' to food, but limit intake quantity. It is generally observed that in a day we eat at least 2.5 to 3 times than what we actually need.
* (Over) stuffing yourselves shall be allowed just once in a week, but be careful, if you don't follow other points then better not.
* Although you are free to eat what ever you want .
* Balance your diet as much as possible. Its difficult to get everything in one meal, so plan your meal so that you get almost all nutrients that you need to intake in a week.
* Drink 'Oolong cha' [aka chinese tea], preferably warm, immediately after your meal. This helps in digestion of the food that you had and dissolve the fat you just consumed.
* Do consider to use oils that have Mono Un-Saturated Fat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monounsaturated_fat) [MUFA] or oils that have Poly Un-Saturated Fat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyunsaturated_fat) [PUFA] and avoid Saturated Fat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturated_fat).
* Do not miss to add foods with high dietary fibre content.
* Avoid 'FAST FOODS' as much as possible. Note: You may have in limited amounts for once in one or two months.
[B]Others
* Make a note of your measurements (those that you can measure by yourselves such as weight, waist size, BMI) in regular intervals [Suggested interval: monthly~bi-monthly]
* Make a note of your measurements i.e. do a MC (those that you cannot measure by yourselves such as BP, Cholesterol, Body fat, etc. [Suggested interval: semi-annually(if you have abnormalities)~ annually].
Note: this is absolutely a must to stay fit so that you can find that you are deviating from normal and take corrective actions sooner than later.
* Join a gym. I had misconceptions of going to a gym until last year. But, after me joining this year felt that I should have done this several years ahead. Lots of advantages in going to a gym. Of course it depends on the facilities and type of equipments the gym can provide.
[I]Advantages of a gym: You have an instructor/trainer to monitor/train you. You have equipments that can assist you to know your limits. There are lots of difference in running/walking in a gym and on road. On road you will have several hinderances [such as cycles, signals, dogs, others] so you cannot keep your pace. More importantly there is a minimum level and maximum level of your heart beat when you walk/run. If you don't reach minimum level there is no point in exercising, and if you exceed your maximum you are risking your life. Note: this is for those who are planning to run/walk for fitness purpose not planning to run a marathon etc.
Conclusion
Above are very very easy to follow. These are practiced and proven methods by me, but I failed to sustain. Now I've decided to sustain going forward.

Honey & Cinnamon Cold Remedy
Kids & Adults love this! Both honey & cinnamon have antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties.
1 teaspoon honey (organic raw honey)
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Mix. Take this amount every few hours as soon as you feel a cold or other illness coming on. After initially trying it with only one ‘dose’ and seeing the immediate effects, I now mix up a small bowl full of honey and cinnamon and spoon it into hot drinks or dip fruit into it all day long. I find that with young children it’s easy to just treat the whole family with this simple yummy remedy upon the first sign of a sniffle from anyone.
As with all home remedies, your mileage may vary and please do not substitute this for proper medical advice! Do not give to children 12 months or younger.

While you may be making the utmost effort to eat healthy for the majority of your day, it is possible that there are the small daily mistakes you maybe making in your diet, which make weight loss, or weight management more difficult and a slower process than it should be.
Sometimes it is these innocuous morsels of food that make a big difference when it comes to proper weight management. So what are these foods in your daily diet that you should avoid?
1. Glass of milk - While milk is a healthy addition to your meals, it could possibly be the one food that is hindering your progress. If you are used to having a glass of milk before you sleep, at breakfast, or even for a snack in the evening, take a break from drinking milk for a month. If you feel that its making a difference - making you less sluggish, helping you lose weight, clearing up your skin etc - this maybe the solution to your problems. Give it a go.
2. Something sweet after meals - Many people have this habit of wanting just a little something sweet after every meal. This is absolutely unnecessary and you probably know it. Just that addition of sugar after your meals is worth cutting down on if you have it on a daily basis. Let dessert be a treat you save for the weekends and you will probably savour it more.
3. Heavy carbs for your evening snack - How often have you felt so hungry in the time between your lunch and dinner, that you can eat anything without giving a thought as to whether it is right for you or not? You may land up knocking off a sandwich or a samosa. This may be the only unhealthy addition to your diet in the entire day, but consumed daily, this evening snack could be hindering your efforts. Therefore, carry something that has healthy proteins and fats like nuts, with you so that you don't succumb to hunger.
4. Potatoes - Recently dubbed by a study conducted by Harvard, as one of the foods that definitely makes you gain weight over time, potatoes have a way of turning up in our daily food unannounced. You maybe eating a healthy sabzi but a whole potato may have been added in there to improve the flavour. Fresh veggies taste good on their own if you try, so give it a shot.
5. So called 'healthy snacks' - Baked chakris and chips, all of these so called healthy snacks, should be substituted with real nutritious food. Many people eat these unaccounted, thinking they are healthy and will not make a big difference to their health and weight. This is a misconception and you are better off without these highly processed snacks.

The cooking oil that you opt for can have the greatest impact on your family's health and fitness levels. Some vital information that can help you in making the right choice for you and your loved ones
Day after day, in the process of cooking, we either stir-fry, sauté, deep fry or sprinkle our food with oil. As a result, a great deal of this is consumed; little wonder then that it plays a big role in creating wellness. The right cooking oil can give you the best benefits in terms of taste, texture and nutrition.
"Apart from enhancing the palatability of food, it also plays a vital role in regulating the metabolic functions of the body," says Dr Nupur Krishnan, clinical nutritionist and director of Bio-logics Healthcare in Mumbai. "It supplies us with energy and helps us absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D,E and K, which are important nutrients). It also enables our bodies to metabolize proteins and carbohydrates more effectively, promoting digestion. It gives one a feeling of fullness and acts as an insulator to maintain body temperature." And that's why even dieters shouldn't severely restrict their use of oil.
Going overboard can be bad
Despite the many benefits of oils, too much of this in our diet can cause major health problems, particularly by increasing LDL (bad) cholesterol and paving the way to heart disease. It helps to remember that there are no 'low calorie' oils. "One teaspoon of any oil gives you 45 calories of energy," says Saritha Rajiv, Delhi-based nutrition and diet consultant. The recommended intake of oil is 4-5 teaspoons for a healthy person and 2-3 teaspoons for anyone suffering from a chronic illness, adds Dr Nupur Krishnan.
Choose right
With dozens of options, choosing the right cooking oil can be a confusing task. "Your choice of cooking oil should depend on the type of cooking method you employ," says Saritha Rajiv. "If you're deep frying, use oils that have a high smoking point (oils that tolerate high temperatures and don't get charred easily). Refined vegetable oils such as sunflower and safflower have a high smoking point. For stir frying and sautéing, one should use oils such as olive, peanut and canola. Extra virgin olive oil and flaxseed oils are best used in salad dressings."
Know your MUFA’s and PUFA’s
Some oils are a rich source of essential fatty acids such as MUFA (monounsaturated fats) and PUFA (polyunsaturated fats). Essential fatty acids are 'essential' because our bodies are not able to synthesize these. So we definitely need to consume these fatty acids from the foods/oils we eat. This includes Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids that are responsible for regulating many of our metabolic activities.
"MUFA is found in groundnut oil, olive oil, mustard oil, peanut oil and canola oil," says Dr Nupur Krishnan. "It's important because it helps lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and maintain HDL (good) cholesterol. Hence it improves the LDL/HDL ratio in our bodies, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. Polyunsaturated fats are found in vegetable oils such as safflower, sesame, corn, cottonseed and soybean oils. This type of fat reduces the levels of LDL cholesterol too, but too much of this can lower the good HDL cholesterol's well, so it is best to use caution while consuming PUFA's." Experts advise the use of both kinds of oil in our daily diet.
"Always keep two different oils (one with MUFA and another with PUFA) in your kitchen and consume these on alternate days or on a weekly rotation. This will help maintain balance and give you all the essential nutrients," says Dr Nupur Krishnan. Don't ever be tempted to mix two different oils, especially at home by yourself. "This can only be done during the manufacturing process," she advises.
Beware of over heating and hydrogenation
It's important to store your oil right. "All oils should be kept in a cool, dry place in an airtight container," says Saritha Rajiv. "Prolonged consumption of burnt oils can lead to several health problems. However, oil can be re-used provided it has not been overheated on first use. Used oil should be strained and cooled well to remove any food particles before storage, otherwise microbes can grow on food particles, leading to rancidity. Rancid oils contain free radicals that increases one's risk of contracting cancer."
To increase the shelf life of the oil and prevent rancidity, sometimes oils are 'hydrogenated' or partially hydrogenated. This is done during the manufacturing process when hydrogen is added. "Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils can be harmful for your health and tend to increase bad cholesterol and heart attack risk, so read food labels carefully and completely avoid these oils," advises Saritha.
Refined and unrefined
When you buy refined oil, what exactly are you getting? Refined and filtered oil denotes an elaborate manufacturing process, meant to produce oils that are completely devoid of taste, smell and colour. Filtration is done to further free it of impurities and when oil is 'double filtered', it has even more clarity. While refined oils are meant to bring out the natural flavours of foods that we eat, they can be too bland. Over the years, nutritionists have pointed out that the process of refining oil can strip it of its minerals, beta carotene and much of its Vitamin E content. So how can you as a consumer identify this? Dieticians recommend that you read the food labels.
As oils with lower levels of betacarotene and Vitamin E spoil easily, manufacturers tend to add synthetic ingredients such as BHA and BHT to extend shelf-life. If you find these on the food label, you'll know that this is a refined oil that should be avoided. However, as a rule of the thumb, refined oils do tend to have a longer shelf-life than the unrefined kind. Unrefined oils are more natural and tend to retain the original flavour of the nut or seed from which these were extracted, but many people find that these completely overpower the natural taste of the cooked food, so do a little introspection before making the right choice for your family.

Heart Attacks And Drinking Warm Water
The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals, not cold water, maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating.
For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a glass of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer.
It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.
Common Symptoms Of Heart Attack...
A serious note about heart attacks - You should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting.Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.
You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive.

PNEUMONIA ALERT
DR. PANKAJ GARG
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/01277/25SMVACCINATION_1277394f.jpg
Respiratory infections can develop into pneumonia in infants. Here’s how to keep them safe.
Irregular monsoons and frequent weather changes can play havoc with a child’s respiratory health. The number of children below the age five suffering from cough, cold and viral infections has increased significantly. Viral infections of the upper respiratory tract including influenza infections predispose a child to the development of pneumonia.
Take the case of eight-month-old Gourang who was brought with complaints of fast breathing and high-grade fever. A detailed case history showed that the symptoms had been present for four days but had worsened overnight. Others in the family were also suffering from fever and cold. The child was very irritable and the breathing rate was 80/minute (normal at this age would be <50/minute). Other tests also showed that the child was suffering from pneumonia. After treatment with antibiotics and nebulisation, there was partial recovery in three days but it took one week for the child to come back to normal.
What is pneumonia? Pneumonia is a respiratory infection that may be bacterial or viral. The infection causes inflammation of one or both lungs as the tiny air sacs within the lungs get filled with fluid, making it difficult for the lungs to function properly.
Who is at risk? Infants, neonates, premature babies and children between 24-59 months are most likely to suffer due to their low immunity. Getting wet in the rain will not trigger pneumonia but exposure to sudden temperature change can be a risk factor. Damp, heat, air pollution, smoking and overcrowding are conducive to the growth of bacteria, viruses or fungi. Other high-risk factors include malnutrition, deficiency of vitamin A&D and zinc, weakened immune systems, co-morbid pulmonary illness, other systemic illnesses and anticancer drugs.
Symptoms: In bacterial pneumonia, signs include high fever (more than 102° F), difficulty in breathing, fast respiratory rate, noisy breathing, severe chest pain, body ache, wheezing, severe weakness, inability to feed, excessive drowsiness, excessive sweating, coughing up blood and respiratory distress. A child with chest in-drawing and cyanosis (blue tinge to the skin) indicates severe pneumonia. Viral pneumonia, often called walking pneumonia, has less florid symptoms. Symptoms like high-grade fever (less than 102° F), preceding upper respiratory tract infection, coughing up small amounts of mucus, muscle ache and fatigue are common.
Treatment: If symptoms persist, the child must be taken to the doctor. Hospitalisation may be required to administer intravenous antibiotics or oxygen support. Viral pneumonia doesn’t require intensive care and treatment since viruses don’t respond to vaccines and antibiotics.
Complications: About half the number of children who survive pneumonia suffer some after-effect, which may be mild or temporary. But 22 per cent of survivors end up with a moderate or severe disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The complications of untreated or neglected pneumonia can result in disabilities such as deafness, brain damage, seizures and, in severe cases, even death.
Prevention: Adequate breastfeeding for the first sixmonths helps improve an infant’s natural defences. All children should receive adequate nutrition, especially vitamin A & D and Zinc. Environmental factors such as pollution, smoking, overcrowding, sanitation and hygiene should be addressed to reduce the risk.
Bacterial pneumonia is the leading cause of pneumonia deaths in children and accounts for highest number of pediatric hospitalisations. There have been many instances when antibiotic treatments fail because of delay in treatment or administration of inappropriate antibiotics. Lately, the increasing number of disease-causing strains and antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been a matter of concern.
In such cases, prevention of pneumonia through vaccination (Hemophilus influenzae B vaccine and pneumococcal vaccine) is recommended. Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV), the latest pneumococcal vaccine, is highly effective against 13 serotypes of pneumococcus including serotype 19A, which is emerging as one of the important strains to cause pneumococcal disease in children less than five years of age. In addition, the vaccine is a potent tool for protection against the even more serious meningitis and blood infection (septicemia) caused by the same bacteria.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR EYES WHILE USING PC
During a recent visit to an optician, one of my friend was told of an exercise for the eyes by a specialist doctor that he termed as 20-20-20. It is apt for all of us, who spend long hours at our desks, looking at the computer screen.
Step I :-
After every 20 minutes of looking into the computer screen, turn your head and try to look at any object placed at least 20 feet away. This changes the focal length of your eyes, a must-do for the tired eyes.
Step II :-
Try and blink your eyes for 20 times in succession, to moisten them.
Step III :-
Time permitting of course, one should walk 20 paces after every 20 minutes of sitting in one particular posture. Helps blood circulation for the entire body.
Circulate among all if you care. They say that your eyes are mirrors of your soul, so do take care of them, they are priceless.
